QOTD – If I could only drink one bottle of wine on New Years Eve (from my own collection) I would have to say that I would open up an older cabernet based Wahington wine and drink it throughout the night.

Typically I go for a bottle of vintage Veuve Clicquot, but I find that the goodness in the bottle gets lost in the moment of celebration at midnight. However, is it a faux pas to open up a nice bottle of champagne and drink it throughout the evening and then just save enough to go into the glass for a toast at the end of the night? Seems like cheating.

Oh, sorry. QOD: the Agrapart “Les 7 Crus” I picked up there last year. Have to have some champagne, because otherwise it can be hard finding an excuse to crack some as what are you going to do with a whole bottle otherwise if it’s the middle of the week or something?

I liked William. True, at the very beginning of the show he did seem to display a discomfiting lack of affect and I thought he might have a few neighborhood teens locked in a spotlighted bunker in a one-family home in Yonkers, maybe even forcing them to dance in his self-choreographed MTV-style videos, plying them with some bottles of 2002 Bordeaux lifted from The Carlyle, but then by mid-show, I thought differently.

I feel like the lesson of the last two shows is that “restaurant wines” are less than desireable wines, or at least not the most desirable wines, that restaurants buy up at bargain prices and then sell them for larger profits. Anyone agree?

  45. December 12, 2007

Bill was probably the best guest speaker yet. In his calm manner he handled GV’s spasticness in a smooth way, and definitely held his own in the witty remarks dept. Most others try to match GV’s nervous energy and get amped themselves not showing their true personality. Great job to both of you. Keep it up!

QOTD: Only one bottle of wine on New Year’s Eve????? :) We actually usually have a really nice sake on New Year’s Eve, since our tradition is to make sushi at home. We’ll probably open up some bubbly, or else grab something special to try, like the 2006 Amon Ra.

  50. December 12, 2007

    Mr.Sato

QOTD: Hmm… I’m still working on the Christmas wine list! But since Bill wants to know, Probably start with the 2004 Clos des Andes (Argentine Malbec) because we’re going to have some savory grilled beef cube and veggies cooked using skewers (we like stand up dinners, like finger foods in size, but heftier), and always serve things like dark chocolates, blueberries, black grapes, and stawberries. Then maybe once the dinner is done, while wating for the champagne moment, 2003 Vin de Pays d”Oc Jean-Louis Denois “Chloé” because it is totally yummy on its own, and I have some. For the toast, Fleury “Carte Rouge” Brut Champagne. Sorry, I know they mostly aren’t wine library wines, but….

I enjoyed this episode a lot, largely becauase of Bill the sommelier. He reminds me a lot of myself, only better dressed. LOL Oh, and I don’t think he knows who Green Arrow is. Here’s a link for him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Arrow

  51. December 12, 2007

    purplejuicebruce

Good show! QOTD…well on New Years I can hardly be expected to limit myself to one bottle so I’ll probably raid the wine cellar and drink what ever looks good at the time.

  52. December 12, 2007

    Obama_Man

Something tells me that Bill spends most of his nights in the Carlylse, smooth ass mother f*&&* ;) . !

QOTD: That $850 Italian wine from our favorite Montana steak shop! :)

  53. December 12, 2007

    Timothy Burke

Another great episode, so glad to see Gary roaming the streets and checking out what places are offering.

QOTD: New Years Eve I’ll probably be drinking a Pinot Grigio with my buddy since he is a huge fan of Pinot Grigio Wines. So whatever he chooses I’ll dig into. Probably also drink a Tom Collins as my non-Wine drink.

  54. December 12, 2007

    Smith MBA

    Why is everyone killing Bill?

QOTD: I will be drinking Miller High Life: The champagne of beers!

    Grasshopper

    Another great offsite EP Sensei!!

1st – Wednesday nights you should play….”More Cowbell”!!! Casue your the cock of the walk Baby!!!

2nd – I have posted TN’s on forum of the 1990 Domaine Du Viking Vouvray and love the wine. I would suggest everyone try and find one of the older Chennin Blanc’s. We really enjoyed it and still have four in the cellar….Just awesome with Thai or any other spicier dish!! the mouthfeel is lushious, the hint of sweetness and the lemon/pineapple flavors are wonderful!!

QOTD – have not been able to plan that far ahead yet, but will be popping several bottles and will probably include a couple sparklers. We visited Mumm in october and have a few sparkling Pinots which are very nice. Bill thanks for making me think ahead….:)

Great job Gary, I love all the “inside” talk between you as a retailer and your guest as a sommelier. Interesting insights.

QOD – If I could drink anything on New Year’s Eve, it would be Chateau D’Yquem. Partly because I think that would be a great party wine, but mostly ‘cuz I just really want to taste that wine someday!

  57. December 12, 2007

    J.R. Young

QOTD: For this year in particular, a Colchagua Cabernet, because I’ll be in Chile.

    Great show Bill

    and you too Gary!!!

    Nice. I like this series.

  59. December 12, 2007

If I could have any wine, it would be an old vintage Bual; but I’ll probably be drinking a simple rose, with a little spumante late in the evening.

Another informative winner GV. QOTD: New Years Eve? Whatever bubbly is on-hand, Brut most likely.

  63. December 12, 2007

    Sharon

Gary, stop hating on the Patriots! Future HOF inductee Tom Brady cannot help but be great. You’ll see that on Sunday :-)

QOTD: Well, if I could have ANY wine on New Year’s Eve… may as well have the 1961 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild since this is dreamland and also that’s my birth year and also was a great year in Bordeaux. In reality I’ll probably have some Prosecco, heh heh.

  64. December 12, 2007

    Shadowbird

QOTD: I will be drinking Ballatore Rosso Spumante. Had it bought and chilling for a month.

  65. December 12, 2007

Hartwell Estate Cabernet all the way baby!

  66. December 12, 2007

    Jprva

Another awesome episode. Bill’s voice sounds very similar to Matt Damon. Very odd.

QOTD: Any and everything. Champagne, red, white. I think I will keep the quality stuff limited to the first few bottles only.

  67. December 12, 2007

    Adam J

Great episode. I’m liking these touring shows. The back and forth we’re getting is great; really informative.

Gary, the next contest you do, the prize should be we get to tag along with you for a week as you got to wine tastings in New York restaurants! Great show. Wish I had Bill’s knowledge, job, … and hair.

QOTD: A big bold Zinfandel or Cabernet Sauvignon!

  69. December 12, 2007

    organicguy

Thoroughly enjoyable episode—-had a great time listening to both of you. This is a great format going from place to place tasting and critiquing. QOTD–have not yet picked out the wines for New Years Eve but the family participates in a progressive dinner and we have the main course this year. Osso Bucco is on the menu so the Italian section of the wine racks will take a direct hit. Can’t wait—–any suggestions from the Vayniacs—PM me—thanx–

  70. December 12, 2007

    NickG

I’m enjoying this series – it’s great to hear things from the sommelier perspective.

I’ve had several bottles of the Aigle Blanc Vouvray over the past few months and it is outstanding. WL does indeed sell it (item 35663). Amazing value for $20. For anyone who gives it a try, I highly recommend opening at least an hour in advance or decanting as William did.

QOTD: I’d like to be drinking an aged Cote-de-Nuit Burgundy on New Year’s Eve. Don’t know what I’ll actually be drinking yet.

  71. December 12, 2007

    portland guy

Very nice episode, but gez GV, calm down, don’t be so wordy, get a grip.

QOTD – Must keep the tradition going (decades old) — Cold Duck!

But we will have our traditional oyster stew with a Belle Pente Dry Muscat.

  72. December 12, 2007

    SmokeyUST

    1945 Rothschild.

    No question. Done.

  73. December 12, 2007

i see u forgot to play your beethoven lol … good show.

  75. December 12, 2007

    Dr. J

    g,

i thought we were going to play nice, but i see you have thrown down the gauntlet.

#1 cranberries are king, especially here on Cape Cod where we have bogs everywhere.
#2 you hate tom brady ? dont even go there, you just wish the jets had somebody like brady, or any of our QBs.
#3 this sunday, the pats and the jets. a 24 point spread !

    ’nuff said.

oh, the wine shows this week have been great. but you have to calm down, try the decaf !

  76. December 12, 2007

    Jaybird

Gary you are such a smart person even smarter then William looks! (Now that is smart)
QOTD: I have a couple 2000 Chateau Pavie but I think I will wait on that so I’m gonna choose something I can’t get my damb hands on…Kosta Brown any one of last years single vineyard. You know what if I didn’t have to pay for it I would uncork a Domaine De La Romanee Conti (Tache or a Romanee Conti vineyard).

  77. December 12, 2007

    Aaron J

Gary-I didn’t finish the show because I have never purchased an ‘05 Bordeaux. But I like how you dropped fighting references in that posh room. “Buster Douglas,” “Sweep the leg Johnny.” Radical. Time to watch Mayweather’s check hook again!

Nice job on the piano, too. I think Bill needs to grab the tambourine.

  78. December 12, 2007

    David James

QOTD: Wine? On New Year’s Eve? I wish. No I’ll be doing the centurion with all my friends (a shot of beer every minute for 100 minutes…gets you a lot drunker than you’d think)

I’d prefer to have wine when I’m not drunk, then I can appreciate it better!

  79. December 12, 2007

    Harley Stan

Gary, cool episode, this week is like being away at camp on WLTV.
QOTD- Opus one, jsut because I have never tried it.

  80. December 12, 2007

    Mike S.

GV – Love the road shows for a change in scenery.

QOTD – Been holding onto a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Rose Champagne that I will probably pop open.

  81. December 12, 2007

    michael

Best show ever! There was a chemistry between a great chemistry between you and the sommelier that I hesitate to describe; Two guys who love wine but are as different as Oscar & Felix

  82. December 12, 2007

    Matthew L

Like the road shows. Gary, you started out the show like Giuliani’s son at the inauguration–climbing out of the seat and playing on the piano while Bill was talking. I, too, thought Bill was a little uptight at first, but he proved that looks can be deceiving.

$25 a glass?! See my comment from yesterday about by-the-glass pricing and just plug it into this post. They are selling the Ici for $24 a glass which is more than retail, let alone wholesale. I mention this because this pricing issue is what sends people running from wine. It’s unapproachable. Now, I must admit that we’re talking Cafe Carlyle prices, which is not a place most people would go on a regular basis. I paid a lot at the Inn at Little Washington because it was experience, but I wouldn’t drink there with any regularity. I hope Bill is not too pissed that you dissed some of his wine offerings as PAZZZZZZes.

One bit of constructive criticism…try not to constantly cut off your guests mid-sentence. Let us hear from them, too.

QOTD: I, too, haven’t thought that far ahead, but since my wife doesn’t really drink, I may reserve opening Champagne and try one of my Brown Estate Vineyard selections–either their ‘04 Zin or the Late Harvest Zin.

  83. December 12, 2007

    vivianovino

QOTD: 1997 Vitanza Brunello with a nice fillet mignon. –Then drink a lot of cheap champagne.

  84. December 12, 2007

    familydoc

QOTD: If Bill’s buying I’d be drinking Château d’Yquem on New Years. Since it’s me and I’m working the next day I might roll with a little Mountain Dome Brut.

  85. December 12, 2007

    JordanW

QOTD: Sawmill Creek 2004 Vidal Icewine

    JordanW, Canada Crew

  86. December 12, 2007

    Carly

Feeling sad…you told me to turn off the Thunder show!!!

Thanks for reminding me how much it sucks to be a CKC. Maybe now I’ll be motivated to get that 80 hour/week big-firm job and be really really miserable while I cash in humongous paychecks…

QOTD: Probably will go for a sparkling wine, on the cheaper side. Hoping to try some Cava soon, too!!!

  87. December 12, 2007

    Linderelli

first of all – glad to see you proppin out Walla Walla again. I love this town. And REALLY I think you should try the Otis Kenyon 2005 Syrah – would probably be right up your alley. I tried it last night and it’s pretty vegetal – smelled like cabbage! I prefer their 2005 Cabernet but then again – I am a Cab girl. You know – if you started shipping to WA I bet AmericanWinery.com could send you a bottle of each. And I won’t even care if you don’t like them. That just means more for me.

QOTD: Hopefully some Schramsberg Mirabelle Brut.

  88. December 12, 2007

    Dale Cruse

I’m LOVING these on-location shoots. Can’t wait until Gary really takes the act on the road and talks to Kermit Lynch in Cali.

  89. December 12, 2007

    Robert F

almost 25 bones for a single glass of that pinot?! That’s more than a whole bottle at WL! I know that it’s NY, and it’s fancy, and they have to make their profit somewhere but give me a freaking break! 5 times retail is just F-ing highway robbery!!!

QOTD: Duval-leroy brut NV is what I’ll be popping (in an ideal world it’d be 1996 krug, but ya know)

  90. December 12, 2007

    2000 Taittinger Comtes Rose!

2 Things Gary, this series is awesome! You need to come to Los Angeles and film a week here with your picks of places to drink. 2, Have you ever thought of doing a live show at a meet up ala Diggnation?

  95. December 12, 2007

    CrazyManAndy

    Gary,

I’ve been lurking around on WLTV since I saw you on Conan. Really awesome job with the show, you truly do make wine fun and accessible!

Awesome episode, by the way! I thought William did a great job too. Can’t wait to see more!

    Keep up the good work.

Peeps i don’t know about you but i’m tired of listening to old school sensory interpritations of wines in regards to the palate and nose…i love calling like it is like gv and making people uncomfortable with my analogies…especially old wine reps and the stuck-ups…ha ha ha!!!

qod- i have a mag of segura vuidas $9.99 costco beggin for it!!!

  97. December 12, 2007

QOTD: For New Year’s, I think of Champagne and Martinis. But if it’s going to be wine, then something classy, for sure. Something with some age on it, to remind us of Auld Lang Syne.

  99. December 12, 2007

    Atreyu

    Gary,
I like these restaurant episodes. Keep ‘em coming and mix it up!
QOTD: At midnight I’ll drink a good Asti because I’ll be too wasted to enjoy something more upscale.

A question: why don’t you let your guests score the wines as well? More opinions = more openmindedness

  100. December 12, 2007

    Andy

Great ep G …always love NYC & all the outragious prices … Think of Chris Rock .. How much for a glass of Pinot $25 goood lord …. How about I give you $3 for some cherry Boonesfarm. QOTD— How about a Schramsberg sparking wine Blanc to Blanc would do just fine

  101. December 12, 2007

QOTD: For New Years i would love to have a 1995 Sassicaia, and the top off the night with a 1963 Burmester Port. And to Bring in the New Year a simple bottle of Prosecco Because by that time i dont need anymore wine in me. I would be crossed eyed. lol

Loving the NYC tour, you going to hit up any places a bit more casual???? one of the reasons i love your show is because you have stayed far away from the whole snob factor, i hate to call it out but theres a little creeping in from the guests in nyc. Love the show, i’ll be so sad if it ever ends?

QOTD. i would love to be drinking some Champagne, maybe a vinatage one too, but i’ll have to settle for CA bubbley, cheap and pretty good and able to make me smile

Killer question….I’d have to say that if I could drink anything on New Years Eve….here are my answers.

    Bubbly: 1976 Dom Perignon
    White: 1976 Chateau d’Yquem
    Red: 1976 Penfold’s Grange

Gotta keep things going with the Birthyear in effect!

We really enjoyed this show…the wine by the glass in NYC theme…Thanks.

QOTD: Wow,…Carl really likes dry sparkling wines and I don’t. We will probably have to have more than one. Actually, Carl would like Havana Club Seven (not wine and we can’t get that here, either) and I would like a really delicious Zinfandel. You don’t have to drink sparkling wine…right?

Hey… my favorite pinot is very dark and murky… don’t tell me I’m supposed to send something like that BACK! Or else I’ll change the wine world WITHOUT YOU!!!!! ;)

QOTD: If I can spend this New Year Eve with my wife, maybe the answer will be some Bourgogne Pinot as she doesn’t really enjoy those classic, big-arm, vegetal old world ones, and I don’t really wanna think some white wines for the night, as it is charming nad refreshing but not really romantic for me…Pinot can be a nice bridge between girls and boys…Otherwise, maybe some awesome Italia wine for myself this time.

BTW, William opened up quite a bit after some drink and looked much better then. Okay, keep on moving, NYC wine tour for the week~:)

Gotta say Im not digging these restaurant shows so far. The prices are obscene, as in … literally cause me to be disgusted. You go on about the color of your pinot, but what you SHOULD be railing on is the absurd markups on the wines these hair-slicked-back soms are pushing. If you want people to go out and try new things, if you want to change the wine world, you should start with the BS we are bearing witness to this week. I do notice you giving them a little grief about the crazy-stupid prices, but I question whether or not you should be promoting these establishments at all.

25 dollars a glass for a 30 dollar bottle of wine!

Okay, I’m going to lay off William (sigh, well not much) except for these two words: blow dryer. (And if you’re going buttondown-retro, then go buttondown, it’s classic).

GV–thanks again for showing us what we might be stepping into. Nice to see the inside of the Carlylse here cuz I don’t think I’ll see it any other way, thank you.

Soooo much better than last night. It must be because the sommelier and I share the same first name and that hairdo from years ago! Great stuff but I still can’t get over spending $24-$30 for an 80pt glass of wine when I can get an entree at a nice restaurant in DC for the same bones!

QOTD: Looks like I will begin the evening at The Blue Duck in Georgetown (www.blueducktavern.com/gallery/blueduck/home.html) with a rose Champagne and then a glass of the ‘03 Opus One.

P.S. Since you featured The Carlyle on tonight’s episode, please sell it correctly ^^^^. I guess “Not Available” is a good thing so far?

QOTD: thank the man, as I haven’t thought about it yet, and it’s a comin’. I think I’m going for red, as we’re not doing a large group thing, and I don’t want to down a bottle of bubbly myself. Red, likely a solid Chateauneuf du Pape, or a nice Bordeaux. We’ll see.

And just for the record again, I’m a hater of the markup on wine in restaurants. And hate is a strong word.

Bill was a bit of a dud, but his question was a good one. ANY wine on New Year’s Eve? I will likely pull out two; one a big Cab- maybe a 2001 Plumbjack or a 2001 Quintessa and the other Turley Zin or a yummy Syrah like a Mollydooker Carnival of Love…

  131. December 12, 2007

    Christopher J

I think you and William were a great on-screen duo. A great contrast in personalities, you guys need your own show, very “odd couple-ish”.

Also, maybe next time you could find a table that wobbles more? Maybe do a show on the back of a flat-bed truck? That was distracting to me.

I agree with everyone else about prices, and is the main reason why I rarely order wine in a restaurant. Do you realize that the per-glass price for all of the three purchase-able wines were more than an entire bottle? However, I do realize that the prices may be inflated due to the location.

QOTD: A nice champagne of some sort. I am not big on champagne, so I would have no clue how to pick one. Maybe you can do a New Years show to give us “champagne challenged” individuals some ideas.

  132. December 12, 2007

Before I retired, I traveled extensively on the company’s dime. Every time I visited NYC I was told that I could always find better than the NYC offering, but would never pay more than the NYC price.

Nice show Gary, I am liking the on the road specials. Not sure I want them all the time, but it is nice to break up the usualy and see what is out there. Unfortunately and yet fortunately every place serves something different, and so you can try so many different wines.

QOTD: I am looking for a nice Champaigne. Not sure what to pick yet, but will find something. Also will get a port for the after dinner desert.

Really interesting episode GV. I have to say, if the Carlyle is such a fancy-smachy restaurant, why was the table jiggling? Though if I went to NYC with someone rolling in the dough, I’d have to try and get in, esp on Wednesday nights! I have to say, we sell only a few $8.75 a glasses of wines at work and that’s a kinda big deal. Ouch, $25 a glass would really hurt the wallet! Ok and I feel that William would have been much more at ease if he wasn’t at his place of work, where he needs to be the serious sommelier!

By the way William (if you’re actually reading the comment boards), pretty good pronunciation of those French words. This is coming from one of the Vayniacs who’s a resident francophile (getting a Masters in French and doing a thesis on wine), and almost a fluent francophone!

QOTD: Nice question William! This makes me think, because I’m part of the College Kid Crew (CKC) and will be in RI at that time and I don’t roll in at $25 per glass! Either I’ll be hoping to drink something passable at a bar or I’ll be having some sparkling wine be it Champagne, Cava, or Prosecco (notice I didn’t call it Champagne, cause that comes from a specific region in France- I’m all about the AOCs!). But I’d have to say, I’m interested in having some of that 1990 Aigle Vouvray…or perhaps it’ll be a wine from WL! At this point, who knows!

QOTD: I wish I knew what the wine was – some white from Alsace with really delicate fruit and floral notes that slides over my palate like liquid silk, gives me a mouthful of complex and subtle melon, peach and rose petals, then balances out to a great finish with a little nutty minerality before it fades away like a setting sun. Chaser is a 90 Cristal Brut from the bottle with a lampshade on my head and a WTF? tshirt. Or maybe GV’s dodgeball shirt.

How can people live with themselves after charging $25.00 a glass from a $30.00 bottle of wine? It’s not even that bad in Santa Fe.
By the way we had a bottle of 2005 Amisfield pinot noir last night and it was great.
    QOTD: Charles Krug
We may open a bottle of port though, as sales of it is now PROHIBITED along with all fortified wines in our city (Albuquerque, NM)by our mayor for unknown reasons. All liquor merchants have pulled all fortified wines from the shelves. I’d be very surprised if any DUI’s had an opened bottle of 20 year old Taylor Fladgate or Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry in their vehicles, but I guess you can’t be too careful.

Hey Gary. I’ve been watching your show now for a week or two and this is the first time I’ve posted so I guess I’m no longer a lurker. I’m pretty new to wine and just wanted to thank my friend Chad for recommending your show and really getting me into wine. I tried a wine earlier in the week and it was the first wine I really got “excited” about (Coppola Diamond Label Claret Cab. Sauv. 2005), so I’m hooked. Thanks Gary.

  151. December 12, 2007

    Wine Not?

Wow, I’m heading to NYC in February and the prices for wines by the glass are already making me cringe. I always forget that about NY…

QOTD: ANY wine on New Year’s??? Either a vintage Krug or, if not bubbly, one of those amazing Napa cult cabs that no one can afford to get their hands on (Screaming Eagle or the like).

Great road-show episode…I think on New Yrs Eve I’d love to get my hands on a classic first growth Medoc Bordeaux (Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour (Pauillac), etc..). Unfortunately my finances allow me 5th growth for now :-)
    Cheers

    Gary,
Very interested in your objective for this show. sounds like Bill chose 4 wines for you to evaluate….selling $25 wines by the glass with less than 90 pt ratings is brutal……I would have loved to hear how Bill would have rated the wines. It is true as you said in the show that each of us have our own opinions. As you move a long this week, it would be great to have your guest rate first, then let you rate.
QOTD: Start off the evening with a Prosecco and apps then move to a Brunello…..and finish with a tawny port and Stilton blue with red grapes.

    QOTD:

    A. Whatever I’m drinking, I think it will be less than $24 a glass.
    B. I’ll be drinking a bottle of the new New Year’s Eve Wine Library surprise pack that Gary V will announce after Christmas for a “taste along with Gary” episode;
    C. I’ll be drinking water as my wine budget was maxed out in October;
    D. I’ll be drinking Scotch Old Fashioned with Bobby Short and Ike Turner;
    E. I’ll be drinking coffee with hints of leather, smoke, green asparagus and cherry notes.
    F. All of the above.

  157. December 12, 2007

I think our friend William has a wine crush on GV.
Really digging the on location shows, but William didn’t give us the “in the camera waterfall spit” like Andre. From now on the guest should be forced to give us a good camel spit.

  158. December 12, 2007

    Flavio

The Vayniacs have to understand that the prices per glass there are what they are because it’s the Carlyle, arguably the most elegant and hotel in NYC (perhaps the US). You’re paying for the name, the ambiance and, more importantly, the real estate… Manhattan (and I guess the Upper East Side, as GV pointed out) is a unique place and can’t be compared with anywhere else in this country.

QOTD: This year… hopefully an old Barolo (71? 85?). I’ll be staying with some friends in Italy and I just found out the house has a 6,000 bottle cellar. I’m sure I’ll find something good in there.

  159. December 12, 2007

    CellarDweller

Great idea for a quick series of episodes—so much to learn on so many different levels. The idea behind finding those hidden gems amongst lesser vintages is great, but it seems like you’d have to have some serious chops (and some serious tasting-time) to pull something like that off. Does that make sense? Should the rest of us wine mortals stick to more reliable (for lack of a better word) vintages?

QOTD: No idea—I’ll be in London; no solid plans yet. Maybe I’ll just watch the fireworks from the hotel balcony and drink that shiz straight from the bottle, Ep 148-style.

  160. December 12, 2007

I LOVE the different environments! (no phones ringing) Am anxious to see the rest of the week’s episodes. I love GV’s comfort level with these guys. “William” got his chops busted and he liked it!

    QOTD-
Ripple with a 2 buck chuck chaser. WTH – I’ll be lit! I’m a realist!!! First glass is all that counts.
C’mon, New Years eve is a night to let loose and NOT debate the best wine in the cellar!

Christmas dinner would be a better wine/food focus. A good Barlolo, a grilled, 2″ thick NY Strip steak and sauted shitake mushrooms, asparagus and twice baked potatoes with grated cheese. An ice wine or Port and Snickers brownies for dessert.

    A ride home.

Less Than The Carlyle: Trademark it soon. The name alone is bound to snag several of the label shoppers out there.

Ici/La-Bas: I’m almost positive I’ve had it before, but I may be confusing it with something else. Now I’ll have to hunt down a bottle to see if it’s the one I remember. *note to self*

QOTD: If I can find more bottles of Gloria de Ostatu 2001 Rioja Alavesa (without too high of a markup) in time for NYE, I’ll be ecstatic. It’s the kind of wine I’d love to share with friends. I’ve certainly raved enough to everyone about it.

It would also be nice to have champagne, of course. My champagne knowledge is limited, so I’m still tasting my way through glasses & bottles to learn what I like and don’t like in bubbly. Eh, so far I’ve learned that my palate rejects bone dry champagne.

My bottle of 1994 Dow’s Port is too young to open. (Heh, 2 minutes ago I looked up that WLTV episode to show a friend.) Meanwhile, I’ve been drinking Churchill’s 10 Year Old Tawny Port every so often. I wouldn’t mind sharing a bottle of that with friends on NYE.

    dave from Osaka (thunderball)

At the beginning of the show I was like, oh-oh this Bill guy is way too straight-laced to make it through 20 minutes of Gary….but he was cool in an understated kind of way and just rolled with it. Good show. As for what I would drink on New Years I guess the sky’s the limit…hmmmm…maybe an old Sassacaia? But realistically it’s probably be a 2003 Marciliano or Oreno. Or perhaps some 2004 Kanonkop Pinotgage…I’ll have to go see what I got left.

  176. December 13, 2007

    J.Rice

Well, I really love Champagne, especially with food more than anything, but I’ll probably be sipping on that on New Year’s as well. I’ve never tried a really nice prestige cuvee Champagne, or even a vintage Champagne for that matter. That’s what I want to try. And as Champagne isn’t as much my specialty as other things, I’d be up for some quality recommendations. Anybody got one?? Otherwise, I’d definitely go for a nice Chateau Margaux or something of the likes. Except I’d probably be sleeping by midnight because I’d down the whole bottle myself. Heh heh.

  177. December 13, 2007

QOTD: New years eve – after seeing twee eps where the 2002 Bordeaux Vintage was tasted, I will drink some Lafon Rochet 2002.

    Hi Gary,
I am really enjoying your shows with guests, but sometimes you come across as being disrespectful to your guests. If you think someone is a loser, don’t have him on the show. Take the higher ground, and treat people as you would want to be treated.

  179. December 13, 2007

    YoungDave

QOTD: New Year’s Eve: I think I’ll be working that night, so I’ll keep my answer within the realm of our wine list rather than what I have at home: I’ll try to snag a glass of Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rose Champagne… but one of our by-the-glass red specials is more likely.

    Josh in Burgundy

So honest to god my first impression of William is exactly what you would think of an upper east side somm. But turns out he was a pretty cool dude. Good show

QOTD: For a bubbler it would be Krug Clos de Mesnil (gotta love the blanc de blancs) and for an other wine perhaps a bottle of 1995 Le montrachet with a couple of great friends/family.

Bill seemed a really cool guy. He was a really good sport about you giving him a hard time, and had a great dry sense of humor. His dryness juxtaposed with your in-your-faceness was a great combo. You guys seem like a good team.

QOTD: Probably a vintage champagne with my wife. Not sure which yet though. Grower and Thiese most likely.

    What a great episode!
I saw Woody perform there last week and got autographed book!
Yes, prices are outrageous for what the café offers, but show was incredible.

    Garry,
    I love Loire wines.
Recently I had mind boggling Savenierres.
I think Loire whites episode is long overdue.

Very nice to see you out and about and out of your elememt. This is a great idea for a nation wide production. You can call it “All roads lead to Wine” with Gary Vee your host…lol

I’l be drinking Cristal Rose 1996 on new Years.

After that, I was actually going to ask you to recommend something so if you read this please get back to me. You have my 45.com emial adresss….if not Dennis has it.

I had a dream last night in which William was GV and vice versa. Picture GV with some pomade in his hair, the glasses, & tie and William all frazzled and hyped up over the Jets.

    CHATrBox

Another nice field trip episode! It’s nice to live vicariously through GVNC because more than likely none of us will ever visit the inside of that room.

QOTD: To know this would take planning and I don’t often pre-plan my wine drinking. Usually I reserve special bottles for T-day or Christmas, to go with the great food, and then just role with it for New Year’s. This year though at some point I’ll probably be drinking the 1997 Argyle Extended Tirage Bubbly…either before or after several PBRs!

Does anyone else think Bill looks out of his element? He clearly knows a lot about wine so I don’t mean that, but he just doesn’t seem like he’s meant to look so…stuffy.

QOTD: I’m determined to break out of the cheap champagne mold this year (think Andre) and buy some reasonably priced Proseccos and sparkling wines for everyone to drink at my party.

Classic episode, Gary! Great guest, as well…bring him back on the show soon! In fact, the two of you should each pick wines for the other to blind-taste.

QOTD: That’s actually a great question, because New Year’s Eve is not normally a time when you have people gathered around who want to sort through and talk about the features of the wine they drink. I’m a big time fan of Italian reds (and would drink them on just about any occasion, but this year I think I’ll attack the Champagne on that night to see what I find.

GV great show. You finally met your match. You had a guest who was an equal (or better) to you, palate to palate. On that level Bill rocks. For a geeky, stuffy SOM that is.

No need to worry about your job. But he could host while you are on vacation. It would be similar to Tommy Newsom standing-in for Doc Holiday on the Tonight Show..

QOTD: Rombauer Chard. It’s what the wife likes.

QoTD: I’m not sure what exactly I’ll be drinking on New Year’s Eve, although I’m sure it will be champagne. Since I’ll be at work it’ll be whatever my boss is generous enough to pour (and probably not a grower champagne–sorry Gary), but for the wee hours of the morning once I get out of the restaurant, I’m considering getting a bottle of drappier, pierre peters, or henri billiot (or maybe all 3 if the holiday season is really good to me).

  235. December 14, 2007

    downtnmark

QOTD: If I have friends over for New years Eve, I’ll pull out a Provenance Merlot and maybe a Bell Claret that’s been resting a couple of years. If I go out, I’m not going to drink anything.

I’m having fun visiting with the som’s in NYC with you. Can you do something with barrel tasting?

  236. December 14, 2007

I wonder what Sasha’s expression would look like if he heard you, GV, describe a wine with the adjective “dirty underpants” or “nasty, old, used jockstrap found under a chicken coup”, or whatever. Would he grimace, or would he think, “yea, another case sold!”? My guess is it wouldn’t work in a restaurant situation. Nevertheless, I love these realistic descriptions anyway. Rather than use the old “Funk” descriptor for some Rhone varietals, GV goes one step closer and uses undergarments. I love it. Now, my wife will know when she sniffysnifs my underwear or jockstrap(really don’t have one anymore), all she has to say is “Funky”.

You would think a highbrow, expensive joint like The Carlyle could get a table that doesn’t rock back and forth, WTF? I hate that when I am at a restaurant and the table is all over the place.

Our local wineshop actually carries one of the grower champagnes which was just reviewed on WLTV so I thought we’d try that this New Years Eve. I’ve always enjoyed the Roederer so we’ll be having that as well. Just for kicks also picked up a bottle of the La Luna Lambrusco – not certain what to expect there, just sounded like something different and fun.

Hey Gary, good move not letting pussy-boy Billy with the Brylcreme part not spit; you could tell he likes to swallow. Did you notice that he was a bit put-off when you said you would not make-out with him over that wine?
P.S. Cut back on the speed a little; your pupils were like saucers. Try a good spliff occasionally. Thanks for the variety, but fuck NYC. Try Chicago for a more real experience if you crave the big-city life style.

  246. December 15, 2007

I just want to say that today I actually tasted the vegetals Gary always talks about. Before I was like, barnyard, sure!…dirk, rocks, cave, moss! of course! but veggies? And I eat a lot of those. So today I was really excited that the vegetal component came out to play with me. Anyway, on new years I have no idea what I’ll be drinking, definately bubbly but have no idea…i love the louis jadot rose but i’m always up for something new and i could see myself starting off with something fresh but having a back up….also, your friend is kind of emo. Wine is happy. Tell him to cheer the hell up.

Great episode – thanks Bill and Gary – I like the “field trip” aspect of the tastings and the reference to the hotel and the room where you shot this from. Did Bill say Woody Allen plays piano there ?

Great episode. I should start using one of those social network bookmarking sites to keep track of the really good episodes.

QOTD: You know, I wouldn’t have thought of it if you hadn’t mentioned Rosé, but I would definitely be excited to drink the Marquis de la Tour NV Brut Rosé for New Year’s. A local grocer had it for $7 too, so you can’t beat that. I’ll be at a wedding though so I’ll drink whatever they’re pouring.

  255. December 16, 2007

Probably a GROWER CHAMPAGNE. I think i will choose Pierre Peters, Margaine, Chartogne-Taillet, or Henri Billiot. Great question from the newbie.

  256. December 17, 2007

    CRZYWinemaker

Hey Gv ~ Gotta be honest, I think I could find just as interesting wines at my local wine shop and actually be able to afford them, $25 a glass is a bit steep and with the reviews you gave, not sure I’d seek them out at any restaurant ? This is one of my big gripes about restaurants and the comments about restaurant wines, if the wines are restaurant style and from lesser known vintages you would think the prices would reflect that, but they never do. So I have to settle for mediocre wines in even high class restaurants and then go home and pop a bottle of decent wine. Enough ranting.
Still liking the road show though, keep ‘em coming ! liked the Walla Walla Syrah reference)

QOTD: I’m cracking open a 3 liter of my first vintage of wine, a 2000 Columbia Valley Syrah from Griffins Crossing Winery. Cheers ~ Max

    Lawrence Leichtman

I don’t know yet what I will have for New Years this year as I am attending a wine dinner at Rancho San Juan near Santa Fe and they will be pulling bottles from their huge cellar for the dinner. If past experience holds will be some amazing wines including a high end vintage grower champagne.

  258. December 17, 2007

U wish my wife was yours

Is this guy related to Sir Gary?????

  259. December 17, 2007

    Karl Laczko

William Rhodes. He looked a bit stiff on the intro, but he came across really cool (maybe a little bit Matt Damon from “The talented Mr Ripley”), as if there was a mini GV trying to get out. I liked the reference earlier to “Sir Gary”! (and boy can he knoack that wine back) :)

I’d love to go to that place on an expense account (although I doubt my boss would sign off on the final bill!).

QOTD – One wine on New year’s Eve? I’m not a big Champagne groupie so I think it would have to be a Madeira or Port, something like a 15 year old or a good Vintage, that I can savour the flavours as the bells ring in 2008.

  260. December 17, 2007

Super-fun episode. I’m a little disappointed that SS tagged William as “Geek Boy”, but I loved the episode.

QOTD: New Year’s Eve we throw a dinner party for 6-8 of our closest friends. Since I am not sure what we are serving as yet (my wife the “Executive Chef” is still deciding), I cannot say for sure. But I am thinking that we will be having some nice Bordeaux, perhaps a 1995 from the left bank.

  265. December 27, 2007

    Valentin

2002 Bordeaux the ideal restaurant wine? Bullshit! Fact is that many persons not experienced in wines will order wines in restaurants because that is what people do. So they won’t probably notice that they just bought an overpriced wine. Thats how the wineindustry works: Dump all the crap into the restaurants. Of course there are restaurants with good and economical wine lists.

  266. December 28, 2007

    New Years Eve wines:

    1) 2002 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay
    2) 1998 Canon-Mieux – a Bordeaux wine from the Canon Fronsac region. It was the fist Bordeaux I purchased in quantity. I was a novice, ut this is a decent quaff.

How do you like that – I already have them picked out!

  267. January 27, 2008

Awesome series of shows. I think I already answered a QOTD in a later episode, but I drank Peregrine Pinot Noir, and Duval-Leroy Brut NV. After seeing GV talk about grower’s champagne I wish I had made the effort to find something a little more special. Don’t have to wait until next New Year’s to find some though.

Another fun episode. The glasses are a little pricey, but its still interesting to see you go into a restaurant and talk it up with the som. QOTD: My 2000 Royal Tokaji true essencia. BUT!!!…. QOTD: Got a few bottles of F. Bonnet 1999 champagne, not sure how much longer it will last so probably a few bottles of that and then something red for a winter warmer, maybe some LBV port to ensure the requisite hangover.
