QOTD: Nope, it’s not grower’s champagne. Champagne is a little out of my price range. Ballatore Rosso Spumante, however, is not.

QOTD- No Clue, but it wont be growers champagne…i do the cheap cava stuff….not a big champ fan, id rather have some nice riesling or serious red wine. I may have a glass or two of vino but nothing crazy because I have national championships on the 2nd. Damn the scheduling!

Great show! I had an interesting white rioja last night with fellow fan Lewy. It totally wowed us. The Matassa sounds interesting as well.

QOTD: We will start with Duval-Leroy Rose. I have yet to settle on the menu. So, I’ll figure out the food/wine pairings then.

I don’t think I’ve done Beaujolais and steak before. Morgon and sausages maybe, but that’s it.

QOD: either Agrapart or Duval-Leroy, but hopefully there will be some food involved too, so we can throw something else nice into the mix as well.

Just picked up a couple bottles of the Le Frappe Brut to try for New Years.

Interesting little story – one of the guys on your staff (Brian) called me today to let me know that a bottle of 2000 Massolino Barolo that I had sent to a friend as a late engagement gift in AUGUST was recently returned to your store as undeliverable. Apperently it was held up in DHL lost and found for the last 4 months. Looks like i’ll be drinking that on New Years as well!

    Have a good one.

Great show Gary. Never really tried white wines with stake, but I think I will try some out.
New years I will have a bottle of 2001 Allegrini Amarone, and a 2003 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cepages. I have been wanting to try these two for a while now.
    Happy New Years.

QOTD: I looked up the show on Growers’ Champagne. Sounds great. Albuquerque’s not a very good place for off the beaten track products, but we’ll keep an eye open. We’ll probably have Taittinger, La Francaise. There will almost certainly be champagne left over and I will have mimosas in the morning.

  56. December 26, 2007

    yourfrienddownunder

NYE will be just me, my girlfriend, a cabin and some good rose bubbly. Not sure which yet but I will look outside of the established houses. Thanks for a great year of viewing Gary. 365 more episodes to come I hope!

Brandon Jacobs reference??? did that hurt dude?

QotD: somebody sold me some NV RH Coutier Rose Champagne that i thought might go down well on NYE – if work is quiet.

  68. December 26, 2007

    wwave

Yes, Gary, there will certainly be some Grower Champagne consumed. Possibilities are Gatinois Cuvee Tradition, for the second year in a row, Michel-Arnould Grand Cuvee, and possibly Agrapart Blanc de Blanc ‘Mineral’ 2000. But I might just have to hold on to that one a little while longer. What’s your line-up?

  69. December 26, 2007

    Seo Salimi

QOTD: Going to be out at a night club, so probably liquor and champagne of some sort. But if I had my choice and could pull something from the cellar, it would be an isosceles or duckhorn howell mountain., no bubbly in my cellar…

  70. December 26, 2007

    LB in KS

What?! No Cat-soup to go with your steak? Shocker! I kid.
    QOTD…what do you suggest?

  71. December 26, 2007

    italianwinelover

Good ep….totally a home feel although I don’t think that was your home it still felt like we were very welcomed!!

QOTD: Well although I’m trying to find a bottle of Pierre Peter – right now the group has a magnum of White Star & Veuve Cliquot. I’m willing to try some of the growers and to turn them on to them – please don’t be upset but it takes time to turn the tried and true around and I will continue to work on it through your suggestions. I won’t give up!!

Its been a great year with you GV thanks for all your insights and teaching me to trust my tastes! Look forward to the next 365 – oh wait its a leap year!!! Bubbles to 2008!!

QOTD: It depends on what I’m doing. If i’m with my parents, its whatever they have on hand, mostly white zinfadel. (sorry about the spelling)
I would prefer a solid malbec though.

  75. December 26, 2007

Fun episode – too bad you weren’t grillin’ Tofu! :)

QOTD: Probably Prosecco, and I have some Gloria Ferrer Cuvee and Brut Rose that I will probably pop as well. I might try and find that Pierre Peters Champagne you tasted the other day. It sounded nice!

    Cheers

    Happy Holidays!

I can see the transition to a Wine/Food show that would be commercially viable on cable. You would need to have more practice interviewing guest chefs, vignerons and maybe artisan cheesemakers…You have a genuine appeal that comes across on video so keep up the good work. Lighting is very important and less distractions growing out of your head directly behind you. Let’s face it you’ve earned a studio of your own after clocking 400 episodes.

I am considering a Cremant de Bourgogne that uses the same grapes as Champagne but costs about half the price.

At the moment I’m enjoying some leftover prime rib and “Fat Cat” Shiraz/Cab from “Cat Amongst the Pigeons” in Barossa. Outstanding QPR in the ‘06. So much for my Old World bias…

  85. December 26, 2007

GV, oh geez I *did* in fact have some Santa Margherita recently and it was totally MEH!

QOTD: Not quite sure yet – I may go out and try to find that Le Frappe Brut

  86. December 26, 2007

QOTD: The New Years Eve party I’m going to will wanna serve me crap but I’m *trying* to wiggle in some Gruet Blanc de Noirs that I got from the winery.

  89. December 26, 2007

    SmokeyUST

Nice, I always like it when you step out of the office.

    QOTD: Have not yet decided.

  90. December 26, 2007

    Grape Expectations

QOTD: I’m not a big New Year’s eve party person. Prefer a nice fire and lots of old movies. If I can find a grower’s champagne I’ll certainly drink one. But resources are limited here. If that plan fails, I’ll try to find a Gruet (the New Mexico version, not the French–maybe I can score a Blanc de Blancs if I’m lucky.

  91. December 26, 2007

    Pinuck

QOTD – whatever someone else pays for!

seriously, though, maybe beer at this rate. if i end up at some concert for NYE i will not want to touch whatever wine will be at the venue.

  92. December 26, 2007

    Anthony M.

Gaston Chiquet…I tried it and then like two weeks later you tried it on an episode… I love it!!!

  93. December 26, 2007

    David M Roberts

GV – You are a mind reader – I had a Beaujolais Crus by Joseph Drouhin called “Chiroubles” with Christmas eve dinner (prime rib in front of a fire at home with my wife). It was a very nice match, and also far more dynamic than the nouveau juice that is much more basic. I was going to request an episode devoted to the age-worthy crus gamay, but you touched on it already.

QOTD: Thinking more of a sparkling cocktail, with cheap champagne (sorry – when mixing it, I prefer the rot-gut stuff, like Andre…). Example being the “Happy Blu Year” which was written up in the local paper today (Milwaukee Journal / Sentinel)

    http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=699233

    Happy Blu Year!
    Makes 1 drink

    3 blueberries for garnish
    0.75 ounce Stoli Blueberi vodka
0.75 ounce Van Gogh raspberry vodka
    Splash of blue curaçao
Piper Heidsieck (or any dry champagne or sparkling wine)

Put blueberries in bottom of a champagne flute. Add Stoli Blueberi, raspberry vodka and curaçao. Top off, to equal another third of the drink, with your favorite champagne or sparkling wine. Enjoy the effervescent flavor!

  94. December 26, 2007

    Jason Henderson

QOTD: The Christmas Pack–saving it for a New Year’s Party!!

  95. December 26, 2007

    Harley Stan

Great episode in a new venue.
QOTD- Ihave been thinking about picking up a champagne, I am also planning on opening a 1999 Far Niente Cabernet. We have friends coming over so it should be a good time.

  96. December 26, 2007

    Todd Smith

QOTD – Of course Grower Champagne. Pierre Peters definitely, maybe some Chartogne-Taillet Rose

  97. December 26, 2007

    Greg Rempe

Fillet Mignon is the Pinot Noir of steaks…WAY hyped and overrated! While it is tender, it is tasteless and not worth the $15/lb (or more) from the butcher…a MAJOR PASS…with 15 Z’s!!

Ribeye cuts are by far the best and most juicy cuts of the cow…hook it up and test it for yourself and you too will see that the high dollar price tag of the fillet can’t hold a candle to the Ribeye!!

And yes, I am an expert in this particular field! :-)

  98. December 26, 2007

    KJlost

I’ve actually used up all my supply of bubblies on Christmas Eve, which happened to coincide with my mother’s birthday. I’m still undecided whether to go get some or try to find a substitute.

  99. December 26, 2007

    Jaybird

I am thinking about a 2002 Lafite Rothschild, I want to use my new Christmas gift…I got the coolest decanter from my brother and sisters (Riedel Amadeo Decanter)…It won’t matter though as long as it is shared with family and friends. Whats crazy is I remember exactly what wines we had last year.

  100. December 26, 2007

    BobM

    Gary-

If you’re going to be tasting more Beaujolais, would you do the Chateau de la Chaize Brouilly? I had it many years ago, and was really impressed. I saw your store has it for about $11-$12. If it’s still as good as I remember, it should be a pretty good bargain.

QOTD- Rather than Champagne, we’ll probably be drinking Sauternes, a 1980-something Chateau Rieussec. It’s a beautiful deep golden color, and it should be great with some glazed pecans.

  101. December 26, 2007

    Jaybird

Ohh for bubbly I need to pick up some… maybe a sparkling shiraz or a Shramsburg

  102. December 26, 2007

That steak looked delicious…I’d love to fire my BBQ but I’ve got a foot of snow sitting in my backyard (I am in Montreal)…I do not know what I’ll drink for New Yr’s Eve since I’ll be visiting Dubai (U.A.E.) where you need a special license to buy alcohol :-( …However, I am sure that my friends have secured some good wine, but it remains to be seen.
    Happy holidays

BobM’s post right above mine about Sauternes is a good idea. I may have to do that. I never even think about dessert wines on NYE for some reason.

QOTD: I’ve been LOOKING for the Récoltant Manipulant stuff and am just finding almost none at local retailers. I would hate to have to take metro all the way into DC just to get a bottle of bubbles. I will look again before next week but, failing that, probably my old standby of Roederer NV or maybe Albrecht Cremant d’Alsace.

I almost always prefer a Strip or Ribeye to a Filet.

QOTD: Haven’t decided yet, but it’s down to either an ‘00 Robert Young Scion (a bit more Cab Franc in the mix than in other years), an ‘02 Cuvaison ATS, or an ‘03 Napanook.

QOTD: Unfortunately, I’m not drinking a lot these days, New Year’s to be included as my wife is about 8 months pregnant (which I’m thrilled to death about) and is reaching the end of her not-drinking-wine rope. She had half a glass on Christmas Eve (great NZ Sauvignon Blanc) so I’m tending to drink things she doesn’t love like big reds.

Gary, I haven’t watched the holiday show yet. I’m waiting for some time when the GF and I can sit down, watch, and taste. But rest assured, you will have one more comment for the holiday thunder show.

QOTD- The rest of the four Christmas bottles. Sharing with some friends. ‘Tis the season, and all.

Thanks for a great year of wine education and fun.

We plan to spend New Years in Toronto with my wifes family. We will likely enjoy a few goods wines and champagnes. I will probably bring a 1997 BV Tapestry (Last one), maybe a 1997 Joseph Phelps Napa Cab. For the bubbly probably NV Aubry and maybe Jean Milan Special or Pol Roger NV.

    Cheers

I’ll be drinking the Pierre Peters Cuvee Reserve at midnight.

    What are you drinking?

QOTD: Haven’t decided yet. My wife and me will review the wine shops nearby and make our final decision. Maybe I will have some 1998 Medoc Cru Bourgeois from my cellar to celebrate its tenth birthday, as my wife and me met each other ten years ago…I think it can be good to drink now.

And, I had a Bourgogne Passetoutgrain which got a huge, obvious fishy smell weeks ago in a tasting. That fishy tuna smell was quite offensive at the beginning. But 4 hours later, when people all went away, a friend and me got back to that bottle and we found that something happended there. It turned into a very refreshing eucalyptus style on the nose and on the palate as well. It is not really that bad as we thought, although not excellent. It needs time and we need some patience.

Ok, thanks for showing up on holidays. BTW, how is the steak…It looks not bad and I finally succeed in accessing their website this time…

All the best, and bye for now.:)

    Re: Grower Champagne

Tried the Gaston Chiquet followed by a the regular Pol Roger over the holiday. Gary is right, the grower champagne was light years ahead. I am a blanc de blanc guy but the Chiquet was verrry nice, interesting to follow it up with a big house effort. That will be the last bottle of Pol I drink for some time.

New Years Eve is up in the air, have a 1990 Cristal with a soiled label. It might have to be unleashed.

Lurkers should get their own contest; a half bottle of Mollydooker with a cheap piece of beef jerky. No decanting allowed either.

Nice Weber grill there, Gary! I am so glad that you were cooking on something worthwhile…you just can’t beat a Weber!

Gary, the big-ass-glass is perfectly proportioned for the 6-liter bottle. In fact, they both make you seem tiny by comparison. How about an episode on dispensing wine from a 6-liter bottle?

QOTD: I’m inviting cabernet friends to my house for New Year’s Eve. I’ll ice a 375ml of champaign for those who insist.

Yummy episode! QOTD: Champagne! of course! Rosé Champagne, I just don’t know which one yet. Will go to the wine store today and buy. I do know that is not going to be Moët & Chandon this time. Going for something different and new to us.

No plans, no schedules, no clocks, no care and no idea what we will be drinking come New Years. But, we will be drinking something from a vineyard somewhere in the lower four middle states. I like the new emphasis on food-wine combinations, especially the unexpected ones. Good job!

My wife and I had some of the Radikon whites at a tasting. Very interesting stuff. One of them made me think of decaying dead leaves and the beginning of winter — but in a good way. I’m not sure what food I’d put it with, but I thought it was very intriguing wine.

QOTD. Don’t know. It depends on the food.

    The Virginian

    Gary,
    Great show!!

QOTD: I will be going to a party in New York where the host will probably serve Sutter White Zinfandel and Korbel Champagn. I will bring two bottles of Schmitt Sohne Liebfraumilch (I have this feeling that ts is Germany’s version of Boonesfarm but at least it isn’t White Zin and most of the women there just want something “sweet” anyway), a 2005 Chateau St Jean Fume Blanc for me, and from Virginia I’m bringing a bottle of Jamestown Cellars Settlers’ Spiced Wine, and two bottles of Hartwood Red from Hartwoon Winery in Hartwood, Va. It is a really good semi-dry red that people who aren’t into reds always like…yet it has a very unique character that isn’t cool-aid or like anything you will find in a grocery store. I know you don’t think much of Virginia wines, but to me, many of these smaller wineries are like microbrew beers that are unique and different from the national brands. And since I will not far from your area, I will stop in your store on Saturday and buy a bottle of Mailly Grand Cru.

  150. December 27, 2007

QOTD: a 95 D’Yquem in half bottle form, a 95 Chateau Angelus, and hopefully the order I put in can get here by monday from you guys, if not, I’ll be drinking a Feuillate NV Brut Rose to go along with those amazing bordeauxs

Yeah, where was this episode taped? It seems to be a typical blue collar NJ neighborhood that is currently the home-buying choice of white collar middle income subalterns who don’t like the McMansion aesthetic. Despite the class differences created by this and the low-level discomfort everyone suffers due to the sometimes intangible and other times shockingly obvious imbalances in cultural capital and/or actual material wealth, everyone is decent to each other. I think the indoor space is most likely someone’s Cold War era post-nuke bunker now converted into an imagined post-apocalyptic hedonistic love nest, the ultimate place to be left behind.

I am totally going to drink a growers Champagne because I love the whole idea of it, thanks to GV. I’ve been selling pints of my blood for the past few weeks so I should be able to get a decent bottle and then I’ll let some snot crust up on my three year old son’s cheeks and upper lip, teach him a jaunty, crowd-congealing jig and take to the streets to panhandle for some oysters.

QOTD: grower’s cuvee!! sparkling rose from Henry of Pelham. that’s for apps and possibly first course depending on how well it stands up. Great episode Gary, I must say that my first real intro to red wine was Beaujolais and we paired it with some strips of steak that we cooked on trhe grill with my wife’s secret recipe for marinade. It was the hit of the party that night. Every tasting we have done since it has been the most requested item. I have never had a Cru, but I am definitely going to seek it out for our next tasting.

QOTD: Not sure what I will be drinking. Probably will go to the store today and walk around for an hour or so and then find something that I will try.

You’ll hate me for this but since New Years Eve is my fiance’s birthday we’ll have her all time favorite which is the great Martini and Rossi Asti Spumante. Just to switch it up though i’m definitely going to be enjoying one of my favorites, the 2002 Laurona Monstant. The way these cru beaujolais have been described makes me think they would be perfect for me so i’m going to go seek one out. I have to admit that sugar water swill is all that comes to mind when I think of those wines.

Did Mott fall asleep there in the middle?!

QOTD – It should be a sparkling entry into 2008 I have some Pink Prosecco, some Cava and some Champagne (yes, “Growers” even though we don’t use that term over here) all ready to open.

Sorry for being absent on the comments. I was spending my time with family. Don’t you tell us to do that all the time?
QOTD: I believe it may be Belgian beer [Westmalle Trippel maybe?] for a Belgian themed evening.

    Gary,

2 things: 1st: only 2 burners on that Weber, Dude ya gotta have at least 3. 2nd:
You are turning your steaks too much. Put it on the grill , after 5 minutes or so turn it 90 degrees to get grill marks. Leave it for another 5 minutes or so then flip it and cook another 5 minutes on that side. Then it will be done, usually medium rare!

We’ll drink the Tsuki No I Junmai Daiginjyo with a little Fugu (blowfish). Sorry it’s not grower’s champain but you know how we roll over here in the land of the risin’ sun.

GV – enjoyed the episode. I have an idea to deal with the lackers who only post comments when you offer something free – have a “true Vayniac contest”. You can give something free away to those Vayniacs that consistently post comments. I comment on virtually every show and therefore you see why i suggest this.

I am bummed about Champagne and sparklers. My wife simply does not drink the stuff and I don’t like it enough to drink an entire bottle myself. Therefore, I have a bottle of Duval-Leroy that I may drink at some point when I can have someone split it with me.

    Happy New Year!

Darn … I never win on here! BUT, I believe that eventually I will, and it will be something great!

QOTD: We drank a Longaz … still one of my favorites ever, and sure wish there was more of it! It’s the only wine I have purchased more than two bottles of, and I guard them carefully!

Hope yours was happy and exciting! Later!

I am all about the try-new-things! And this leads into my QOTD reply:
Non Vintage Ackerman Iowa Chardonnay. We were at a friend’s for NYE and I pulled this out of the wine cooler. He said his wife had brought it back from a trip out to Iowa a couple of years back. I asked if I could open it up and he said go ahead, I a probably never going to drink it. I was excited, so I popped it open and to my surprise found it to be quite drinkable. Crisp, light, little to no oak. Not very complex, but very refreshing. We were also drinking Ronin Prosecco.

Interesting show – I almost want to try the white wine… Hmmm…
QOTD: New Year’s Eve Dinner – we started with a Mumm Cuvee M sparkler (simple, but pleasant for our guests). Then, with the red beet, orange and endive salad, we had a 2001 Tavel which worked pretty well. With the main course, which was a bourbon-glazed Cajun beef tenderloin, we had 3 bottles of 2003 Chateau Potensac which I had decanted for 3+ hours before guests arrived. Dessert was pumpkin-nut Belgian waffles with whipped cream and dolce de leche caramel swirl ice cream which I served with the 2001 Chateau Filhot Sauternes. After dinner, some folks sipped some 2000 Fonseca LBV Porto. For our midnight toast, we had Piper-Heidsieck Monopole “Blue-Top” Champagne (sorry, I know, not a “grower” Champagne, but it was in the cellar and available).

QOTD: Since New Years has past, we started with a cliqout champagne, a bottle of a caymus white wine with a weird name, and had a Wash state (cant remember producer) dessert wine (semillion)- all very good

QOTD: For New Years my lovely girlfriend and I stayed in and had the Southern Right 2006 Pinotage (I owe you a big thanks gary, it’s coming soon) and the Chateau Malartic Lagraviere 2003 Pessac-Leognan, both were fantastic and forced me to start a Corkd account!

Dude Gary!!! Another black & blue steak eater… I love it. I do have to have to differ with you however that filet is the best cut. Bone-in ribeye is a true steak eater’s cut. Perfectly marblized and tender… ahhhhhh man I think a trip to Del Frisco’s is in order…

It was hard to tell with the glare/reflection, but i believe i saw a bottle of wongo dongo from spain in the background there…something i have yet to try. too bad for me about the silver oaks, i was hoping to win although i don’t think that big bottle would fit in my “cellar” (under the bed), haha. still trying to catch up on the episodes from finals & the holidays but really enjoying them still! :)

QOTD: Since I saw this after New Year’s, I DRANK Duval-Leroy Brut NV. Sorry, not a grower’s champagne. Pretty good though. Before the toast, had Peregrine Pinot Noir from New Zealand. Gary, the steaks made my mouth water. Thanks for showcasing some different wines, and different combos. For me, that is what it is all about.

QOTD: Sorry it wasn’t a grower’s champagne, it was Barefoot Bubbly. I’m not a big champagne fan but this is the best I’ve ever had.

QOTD: nothing important. that is, this is an old comment, but (however) for the record I drank one shot of Southern Comfort. (I mean SHIT) SHIT. No wine, nothing interesting, just another day on the beach.

mmmm, steak. I love me a good ribeye med-rare. QOTD: I bought a Billecart-Salmon Rose, but we drank it on Christmas Eve instead because we ( the family ) wernt sure if we’d all be up around midnight to celebrate. It was still a very good wine. :D
