I LOVE Torrontes — the 2002 Crios was the second or third wine I ever bought/tasted, and is largely responsible for my interest in wine. In grad school, my roommate and I drank a Crios Torrontes every 2-3 weeks during summer. It’s still my favorite, although I had a Lo Tengo once which was just as great. I haven’t had a Torrontes in a few months now; maybe it’s time to break one out….

On a brighter note, i tried3 wines today. A syrah, Merlot, and Jackson-Trigg Vidal icewine…i loved the icewine…very good…The other 2 were gross….it may be because i havent had wine in years…But the Merlot was watery with no flavor and the Syrah was just as bad. I think since i’m a beginner, i will stick to the dessert wines!!!!

QOTD: Brooklyn, NY. I’ve been watching WLTV for almost a year and I will actually be going to my first “offline” later this month.

Just thought I would throw in my two cents about a tip I read somewhere about tasting wine that has been really helpful to me, especially when I first started out. Make a mental list of flavor profiles that you recognize and when you taste a wine, if don’t immediately recognize the flavor, just start running through your list until it jumps out at you.

Thanks for getting people interested in the WLTV Meets! Since moving from Fort Worth 4 years ago I’ve made a lot of friends in Kansas with my wife, but not enough that share my passion for wine. I hope this year to start a wine tasting group – I think it would be cool to have a Vayniac Group in KC!

Had my first Torrontes this past Saturday, the Susana Balbo “Crios” bottling, and am quickly becoming a big fan. You can definitely taste the muscat in its family tree but without being too muscatty (which is probably not a word). That’s a good thing.

Happy New Year to all of you. And, if you live in Long Beach, CA, come and visit me at the Trader Joe’s in Belmont Shore. I run the wine shop there and would love to meet some fellow Vayniacs.

I’m doubling up today. Starting off the New Year in full stride, I wanted to send out my sympathies for your recent loss. I have been very fortunate as well not to have lost close ones, however that fortune has changes Dec 9. Looking at about 4 weeks back I lost my closest relative that I had (Grandma). So your side-note message today was definitely worth mentioning.

I have been diggin the Argentina Reds, but don’t care much for white in general. Though since it hails from my favorite wine country, I’ll give it a whorl.

I like the show and I don’t even like wine.

Seriously, I’ve tried a variety of wines and have not found anything I find even remotely pleasurable. I’m trying. And it’s not like I’m not willing to overcome a little “acquired taste” issues. I like beer. I like coffee a lot. I’m not averse to alcohol at all. I’ve just not tried any wines that I enjoy.

So help me out. What wine do you recommend for someone who doesn’t like wine?

Gary…great show today, and I must say this one hit the cord with me. First let me say sorry to hear of your loss. It never is easy, I always like to think that I was honored to know someone….we all give something special.

You are right on with learning to listen to your palate. I tried for the last few years to force myself to taste things in wine. I eventually gave up and just began enjoying them even more. I realized that you cannot force flavors, and if you just enjoy and let it flow you will find yourself sooner.

I will definitely seek out the torrontes.

For those that like or are willing to try torrontes:

San Pedro de Yacochuya, it would be a perfect varietal only if they were able to tone down the alcohol.
Colomé (the malbec appered at WLTV). Still a little bit cumbersome due to early vintages. Terrific potential.
Alta Vista, CKC’s heaven… extremely well balance between quality and price. Unpretentious, quaffable shows great varietal character and damm cheap.

The best torrontes from Argentina comes from the Salta region (not Mendoza), the Northern part of the country.

Bow, New Hampshire. I also spend a lot of time in Boston, MA where I go to school, and would love to taste with other Vayniaks in either of those places!

Also, I know you are reading this Gary so I have to tell you something really important to me (besides how frickin’ awesome you are… seriously): global warming affects long-term changes in the climate, and these are measured in terms of years and decades. So when the average December days is warmer in the 2000s than it was in the 1920s, that’s evidence for global warming. What you feel when you go outside is the weather, which is measured in days and months and seasons. So even if it’s a warm winter, a cold Thursday, or even an unusually warm year, that really has nothing to do with global warming!

Ultra liberal, sanctuary city, Arlington, VA. (damnit) Love the Torrontes, which, in our house, has replaced the Chard & Chenin Blanc. As the dollar continues to sink in value, we have found the best bang for the buck in Argentine wines, which we very…..very, very much enjoy.
