I actually have a wine rack that was a gift that holds 38 bottles and I use that for the everyday wine. I load it up with wine under 28 dollars that is great, I try to make half of those wines I have never tried but that come from good recommended sources like the barbera that you recommended. This was I get to try something new all time tine. Cheers

QOTD: A trick question – according to the Vayniac manifesto there should be no everyday wine. A few years ago I had the Falesco Vitiano as an everyday, spaghetti red. It was a Wine Spectator best buy/value – fairly average and medium bodied. Nowdays all bets are off and I’m trying different things……

glad to hear your gonna be up at the boston wine expo. After last year’s experience i don’t think i’m gonna make the drive up from jersey, but you should DEFINITELY show the new england vayniacs a GOOOOOD time. Bring your A game dude, they’ll love ya!

I think you should come to Rochester, NY…Not because there is so much to do here but because there is so little. No professional sports team, no casino, not much to get truly excited about, except for wine. Wine is Rochester’s sanity medicine, and its what keeps me going, it’s my “Sanity Fuel”. I am sure you already have a fan base here but I think it would grow much faster when the “ROC” meets you. Ohh we do have Constellations Brand also.

I don’t have a specific go to wine…………I have my favorite varietal/areas of course, but I go with whatever I have on hand. Typically, I have a somewhat even distribution of reds and whites and pick whatever trips my trigger at the moment.

QotD: I have found myself going to the Chateau Diana California Merlot. Much like the Rex-Goliath you reviewed, it has no vintage. I can also pick it up at Western Beef, a supermarket chain which carries it reliably in New York City.

    It’s cheap.
    It’s likely mass-produced.
It may even come off as a “meh” kind of wine by most wine critics.

But I enjoy it. Very much.

Per the Boston Wine Expo, are you just gonna be out on the floor? I’m wondering if I should make a trip back from WI to go the the expo.

QOTD: I used to have go-to wines (Sakonnet Vineyard’s Eye of the Storm and Newport Vineyard’s Great White), but ever since watching the Thunder Show I’ve been into trying new wines. Plus I work at a wine shop now and I have to try new things- otherwise, how can I recommend wines to customers?

QOTD – I don’t (currently) have a go-to wine. For me, it depends on the circumstance in which I will be drinking the wine – with food or not, what type of food, and so on. I’m also in a very experimental phase right now – enjoying lots of new wines… thanks for lots or recommendations!

I would rather a DC event, but since the rents live down there I would consider a road trip to the Durham area if it were a weekend.

QOTD: I don’t have a go to everyday wine because I rarely buy multiple bottles of one wine unless I’m planning to cellar them. Then I like to buy at least two bottles so I can see the evolution. But as far as everyday drinkers go, I am always drinking something different, even if I really enjoyed the previous bottle. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever had the same two bottles back to back. Last everyday drinker was New Zealand Pinot, before that was Austrian GruV, before that was German Riesling, before that was an early 2005 Bordeaux, before that was a Loire White, before that was a red from Veneto, and so on and so forth…… My selection of the evening usually revolves around what’s for dinner. I will never be the guy to buy a case of some $10 wine for everyday consumption. I can only see buying that much of the same wine if it were something age worthy. I really don’t see the point in drinking the same thing everynight. That would bore me to the point of causing me to quit drinking. Gasp. Oh the horror.

  48. January 3, 2008

QOTD: I don’t really have a fall back wine lately – we have really been all over the place really trying to pair the wine with the food. If i had to choose one, we fall back on Zin more than most, but it just depends on the day. Last night, white burgundy, the night before Malbec, the night before that Zin, the night before that Alsatian Riesling with Valpolicella for lunch etc…

    Oh Great Sensei…

You are evolving like a fine wine…you are finding balance, structure and layers. And while your tannins still have a good grip, they are mellowing/softening with age….Still might have a few years of bottle time yet, but you are becoming very approachable and showing your true potential..:)

Great EP and is why I love the show. The information that you share and the practical education you provide has made me watch almost every episode from the beginning. Yes, everyone knows I am a big fan Oh Great Swammy, but everyone should appreciate the fact that you give us great info and honest opinions on every wine, no matter the cost or how much skin you have in the game (which I know is quite a lot!). To help us understand what to look for and what to consider on a $8 Cab is awesome! And, You have always stayed true to preaching tasting notes and not considering points as the “end all” in making decisions on what wines to spend our hard earned money on.

I whole heartledly agree with paying attention to TN’s but do have a gripe on that subject. Many publications and critics will give a wine a lower score, but when you read the TN’s, it still sounds pretty darn good. It’s like the reviewer uses the points to offer their opinion but their words do not always back it up and they seem afraid to use the same imaginative descriptors when saying what tastes bad as they do for things they like…You on the other hand, tell us like it is and use the same vivid descriptors (residual LSD)for bad characteristics as you do the good ones…another reason I want to run against BrandonM for President of the GV fan club!!!

    Great gesture to convey………..”weight”…..UU..:)

QOTD – we drink quite a bit of wine and this seems to change and evolve with time and our mood..but right now it is wines from Spain. Love the wines and all seem to be great values! Grenache, Jumilla, Rioja, Ribera del duero are all great wines for the price.

    Cheers,

    Hopper

QOTD: Being just out of CKC-dom I really can’t afford to have an “every day” wine. Though Merlot has been my choice for dinner parties and such. However, I try to take GV’s advice and try something new every single time I purchase a wine bottle, makes for some fun dinner converatin.

  65. January 3, 2008

    Michael Goldfine

Escarvio is an $8 Spanish wine that really works for me now. Since my “pal” is evolving, it probably will be different next year. But I have gotten way too geeky to have an everyday wine. There are 100 bottles in my basement, almost none over $20–so there is always something interesting to try or share.

    Cheers,
    Michael

I’m voting for a Walla Walla show actually. Why not? You love the spot, and everyone here at AW would love to have you. What does NC have over Walla Walla? My friend Kimi actually refuses to say the second – she just calls it Walla.

QOTD: I tend to switch this up a lot actually. I have a lot of Walla Walla wines in the “cellar” but the stuff I really like – I horde it! It’s such a bad habit! But I come by it naturally – my first word was mine.

Good show Gary. I agree with questioning why people buy cheaper wines “just to have around the house.” You should always buy and serve what you enjoy.

QOTD: Like many, I don’t have a specific regular wine. I like mixing it up … with a California Cab one week and a Oregon Pinot the next. Thanks to you I’m starting to get wines from France and S. America in there as well. If I was looking for a daily wine though, I might be tempted to go with Columbia Crest. This winery seems to bring many good, consistently flavorful and inexpensive wines to market year after year.

I’ve been blending cheap wines for years and have come up with a fantastic light dinner wine mix for you: It’s one part Gallo Fairbanks Cream Sherry, one part Turning Leaf California Chardonnay, one part Gallo Sauvignon Blanc and one part St. Martins Cabernet Sauvignon. What you get, when chilled, is a beautiful amber/rose colored wine that is slightly dry but with some solid fruit (thanks to the sherry) and a pleasant finish. Great with bright cheeses and white meat. Enjoy!

  71. January 3, 2008

All joking aside, when I’m short on time or aren’t in the mood to pick and choose I stick with Merlot usually. That being said, I don’t have a “everyday Merlot” and I’d like to have one. Glad you did a show on inexpensive cabs. We’ve found a couple, a bit over $10 that we like.

NC might be a bit far for us…depends on when. It’s within a few hundred miles. Charlotte is closer for us but I love Asheville.

QOTD: Not any one wine. We are always trying new things. Some we keep around are Bogle Petite Syrah, OVZ, several GSMs – Mr. Black’s Concoction for one. 377 Cab, Big House Red…always adding and changing.

QOTD: I don’t have a ‘house’ wine as am fairly new to, er, oenophilia and am just learning and tasting all the different varieties. Tried another CA chardonnay this evening and damn that was so oaked too, I seem to be very sensitive to it (taste of oak)… I like big fruit but can’t stand new charry-oak.

Hey Gary…Fun show. Ya know around this price point I like the Avalon Cab. and EOS Cab.
    QotD-
I really don’t have an everyday “go to” wine because it’s not what I’m about. I like to experience new wines from all over. Currently I’m traveling the world of Rose wines. I’ve had a few Tavel roses, Provence, Languedoc, South America, CA, and South Africa.
So far I’ve really enjoyed the Roses from Tavel and looking forward to trying more roses from that region.

    Thanks Gary

QOTD: One of the great things about living in Hong Kong is the international nature of the wines avaliable (this is certainly not the case in your average Australia wine shop). Reds I’m very open and always trying as many new things as I can. Whites I tend to lean to Reisling and Semillon, but again I’m pretty open to trying new things.

QOTD: Don’t really have an everyday wine. I order too much from you…but probably drink more 2005 David Bruce Petite Sirah then anything else. So, I hope that helps.

    Tom T.

I think you should make a “Changing the wine world whether they like it or not”
T-SHIRT. QOTD – tough question, but if I have one “go to” wine it would be the 2001 Ruffino Gold Reserve Chianti for red, and the 2005 Pierre a Feu Touraine for white (of which I hope you get more in stock).

  101. January 3, 2008

    Tim Vining

QOTD: I do not want to fall into a wine rut and being new to wine tasting, I still have lots to try. However, in the past two weeks I discovered a wine for $9.95(CN) that I have been introducing to friends called La Patriarche 2005 Syrah and Pinot Noir.

    Great show as always…

Here is a little perspective/history on the Rex Goliath brand that might be of interest.

It was created in 2002 by Hahn Estates/Smith & Hook (monterey, CA) and their timing and marketing was spot on. Helped by a huge glut of good grapes on the market and by putting what was reputed to be very, very good wines for very attractive prices (started around $5) built it up from the intitial 19,000 cases to 300,000 cases in 2004 and on track for 500,000 cases in 2005. But, was purchased by Constellation in 2005 for an undisclosed amount that is rumoured to be in the $40-45 million range (http://zinquisition.blogspot.com/2005/08/constellation-buying-rex-goliath.html). At that point I believe it lost the vintage on the lable. But this is a pretty amazing ROI for Hahn Estates and a great wine business case study!

So, it would have been intersting to have had your opinion of the wine prior to the change in winemaking teams. So in Chris viola’s defense (since he is now known for liking this wine)- It might have been a much better brand just a couple years ago…

But… it does not end their… Hahn Estates has a another value brand to take the Big Rooster’s place. They now have the Cycles Gladiator brand of which the 2005 Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon was rated #11 Top Rated Wine of the Year by Wine Enthusiast.

So, why not try Rex Goliath’s cousin (Cylcle Gladiator)before it get’s sold off?

QOTD: Our go to wine is happening less and less every day as we get more and more educated… but I would have to say if we had one it is the Brancott Sauvignon Blanc (NZ)

  103. January 3, 2008

I really doin’t have an “everyday wine” right now. I’m trying to drink as much different stuff as I can. I’m am liking the 05 Bordeaquxs.

I’m also currently drinking lots of Zins from Dry Creek Valley, Ca that I purchased in my recent vist last Fall.

Listen to Dave, come to Canada!! Niagara region baby!

QOTD: right now I have a case of Laura’s Red, a Meritage from Niagara, great little winery called Creekside Estates run by some very cool folks. It’s my pull out, decant and start fraggin’ on COD4.

    David Dadekian

QOTD: I can’t say that I have an everyday wine. I like to try lots and lots of new things. The problem with that is I rarely get to drink something I liked again (though I make it a point to drink something I loved again).

NC party?? I’m there with bells on, no pasties.

GV you must come to NC! I will rally the troops to meet ya! While NC wines are less than spectacular, this is a great place to visit!

QOTD: I used to have an every day go to line of wines (Angeline by Courtney Benham} but now my everyday wine goal is to try something new $10-15.

I don’t have a daily wine, though lately I’ve been having lots of fun exploring Italian reds. There is a wine that I open fairly regularly (and have a stash of at home) — the 2005 Zenato Valpolicella Superiore Ripassa. It’s what I drink when my husband opens a wine I don’t end up liking. :)

  110. January 3, 2008

    sonnybobiche

My go-to wine when I have to depend on a tiny retailer without a lot of selection has to be the Kendall Jackson Cabernet. Sorry, but it’s true.
When I’m rollin deep, though, it’s Clos Du Val cab (which, yes, you totally did unfairly pan!)

Good show and great analogy re: Darth Vader and the Pats.

Party in NC? Make it in Sept in the OBX and I’m there. As an FYI, my most favorite wine restaurant (Elizabeth’s Winery & Cafe) is located in Duck. You would love it!

    QOTD: Oregon Pinots

I just read KODI’s comment and agree with him on a sniffy-sniff and taste of the Cycles Gladiator. A friend of mine just sent me an email recommending it highly but I don’t believe WLTV carries it. Bummer

QOTD: I am always trying new things, but the closest I have to “go to wine” is Cote Du Rhone for red and Muscadet for white. I say closest because they aren’t really wines I have around all the time, but they are sort of reliable fall backs when I want/need and inexpensive wine, but don’t necessarily want a complete unknown.

  116. January 3, 2008

    Senor Sangria

    Hey Gary….

I am a simple guy when it comes to wine. My everyday wine is whatever we have laying around which we haven’t drank.

Usually it will be Vinho Verde, Malbec, Tempranillo, Shiraz…

    Cheers!

I have only recently become a Vaynerchuck fan. I was introduced to the thunder show @ thanksgiving of 2007 and have now subscribed to the ipod video cast. Woah! Definitely come to NC. Penney and I will drive up there and party with you. What did you have in mind: Charlotte? Raleigh?

QOTD: I really don’t feel like we have a go-to wine. We hardly ever buy more than one bottle of the same thing. Even broken down by varietal, I’m not drinking more than three of the same thing in a month. And I have you to thank for all of this diversity!

Gary – Thanks for the lesson on the blending of vintages. Seriously, it’s awesome to learn about wine and this was something I hadn’t a clue on. Now I do. Very cool.

QOTD – Although, I’m trying to stay clear of having those go-to wines and cases around the place and keep a more diverse bunch, I’d have to say that Simi and Joel Gott have always been kinda the ones I lean on when I don’t want to pop those special ones. But, your right, there’s plenty of others that are even less expesive (not cheaper) than those. I’m currently on a big Spain kick for those.

No everyday wine here either but if I’m looking for something inexpensive to go with dinner, it usually ends up being a Zin, Cab, or Bordeaux blend. For those that do stock up, the best everyday wine I’ve found is the Folie A Deux Menage A Trois Red. Goody Goody in Dallas sells it for $7.93. I agree with another poster that Cylces Gladiator Cab ain’t bad either.

Very glad to hear you will be at the Boston Wine Expo, but could not find a reference anywhere to either you (without the k) or to Wine Library. Can you help out here??
QOTD: Since I drink reds and the wife drinks whites, there isn’t any daily go to wine, although the Riondo Prosecco you mention back in the Fall has been a favorite of ours. We still have a case left and it seems to satisfy both of us regardless of food pairing.

Great episode Gary. Not sure I have a go to wine right now. I know that if it were up to the wife it is always going to be a Riesling. I am really into trying new wines each time I open a bottle.

You are 100% right that you can get great wines cheap, but unfortunately you can also be easily discouraged due to the number of bad wines you will drink to find a good one. I always make it a habit when I go the store to buy 2 bottle of “cheaper” wine to try, and if I like them I go back and buy 1 or 2 more bottle of each to try at a later time.

  166. January 3, 2008

Yay for the less than $10 explorations! This episode illustrates once again why I trust you–not that I’ll necessarily buy what you recommend, but I trust you to report honestly what you taste and think. It says a lot to me that you’re willing to criticize a wine that’s been a big seller for your store. I’m going to look for the Cartlidge & Browne. It sounds like a winner.

QOTD: Would you believe Bear’s Lair California Cabernet, $4.00 at Trader Joe’s? It’s not the most balanced or refined wine, maybe 83-84 points on my totally subjective personal scale, but it’s got good flavors and a little tannin, and for casual drinking it works just fine.

Seriously, come on down to the Old North State. Biltmore House would be a cool place to tour/discuss. Grandest chateau ever built in USA, and largest personal residence if I remember my stats. Give me notice, though, cause it’s a 7 hour drive from my place on the coast.

QOTD: Go-to wine changes with the seasons for me … pendulous full bodied cabs and Bordeaux blends in the winter, perky and tempting pino grigios and chablis in the spring, big bouncy viogniers in the summer, and perfectly proportioned pinot noirs in the fall.

While your palate & mine tend to mostly agree on most wines, however…. MY palate enjoyed the Excelsior Cab as much as any $8 wine I’ve ever had. *shrug* I’ll definitely buy it again, because I’m buying wine to please my palate.

QOTD: I don’t really have an ‘everyday / go-to’ wine. I seldom drink the same wine twice, even those I love a lot. I’m a ‘novelty’ freak (meaning I like to experience new things), so I’m constantly trying new wines almost every bottle I open, because there are just too many out there… that I haven’t sampled yet. Feel like I can’t have a ‘go-to’ wine or else I’ll never get around to trying all the ones I want to try. Maybe in a few years when I have more experience and a broader reportoire of tasted wines, I’ll start relying more on repeats, but not yet.

Mainly different blends or cabs from Washington State but we do have a few cases of a 2003 Duck Pond Carbanet that we tap into on a daily basis. Our cost with discounts average $5.50 a bottle. It is a nice drinker, but I would be curious to see what you thought.

    Gary,

Just picked up your show from a friend. Funny and informative. Good stuff.

Funny that you ask about the every day wine. There is a cheap wine from Australia that has become the everyday drink – Banrock Station Shiraz/Cab. $3.97 at the WalMart Supercenter. Nice finish in my opinion.

Two recent favorites: Heron Pinot Noir ($10.50) and Colome’ Malbec ($26)

    Great tasting, Gary.

Unfortunately, your favorite of the show is a $13+ wine under the liquor controlled PA monopoly, rather than $8. That’s an additional 63% (profit or gouge?).

QOTD: Since starting to watch WLTV, my everyday wine is shifting and lost. It had been Xplorador Merlot (now too oaky?) or Pinot Evil.

  208. January 3, 2008

Lately, mine’s been 2006 Concha Y Toro’s Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon – at 7 bones a bottle (in Delaware though I live north of Philly), though not complex or interesting by any means, still quite pleasant on the nose and the palate. Good everyday drink for a meat eater like myself.

QOTD: The closest thing I have to an “everyday” varietal is Zinfandel, and the closest thing I have to an everyday Zinfandel is the Rocking Horse 2004 (Napa). I bought several bottles of it because a local store has a deal on it ($8). Unfortunately, I’ve heard that Rocking Horse is in Chapter 11 (which is apparently what’s behind the $8 deal).

All the same, even the best wine starts to bore me if I drink it too often. I usually get a lot more excited about reds than I do about whites, and I was about to open a bottle of Cabernet to go with tonight’s episode — but I suddenly felt as if I’d been concentrating too much and reds lately, and I was starting to get tired of them. So here I am sipping Sauvignon Blanc! Don’t tell anyone, but sometimes I think variety is just as important as quality.

  212. January 3, 2008

QOTD: I wish I could drink wine everyday… but I can’t. If I’m lucky I get to drink once a week and taste several wines once every two weeks. So naturally I feel tremendously guilty even contemplating drinking the same wine twice in a row. In fact, I used to feel guilty if I tasted a wine and didn’t write detailed notes (this feeling stopped when I had a succession of terrible reds and champagnes that I have no desire to remember). The only wine I keep coming back to is 04 Barrel Monkeys, for reference. If you’ve seen my blog or forum posts, you’re probably thinking: I’ve never heard one guy mention one wine so many times! Well you would to if it was your first good wine, and if you drank it with the girl I drank it with.

    ryang

Best idea you have had this year. Bring the show to me. Raleigh NC that is!!! As for QOTD, for now I bought a case of the Saint Leocadie Les Clauses and have really been enjoying it.

  214. January 3, 2008

    Mr.Ambassador

    Hey GV,

Thanks again for the Torrontes episode! I ran right out to check our local wine shop and they had two Torrontes available, one from “Crios” and a “Lo Tengo”. I’m currently sipping on the Lo Tengo and can appreciate the bang-for-the-buck this brings to the glass. Reminds me a lot of some combination of Viognier and Riesling.

QOTD – I don’t have a “go to” wine as I like to sample and experiment with many different winemakers and varieties (sampling from the outlets and sale bins quite often). If I do find something I like after trying a bottle I’ll head out and buy a case for everyday drinking. I’ve done that with the Pinebrook Pinot Grigio and the Foley “La Cuesta Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon.

  215. January 3, 2008

    DirtWineKen

I am going to comment on this episode right now!

Great episode that confirms that watching this show has so upgraded my “ready wines”, the ones that are not in the cellar list, and at a lower cost. Thanks.

GV, you are the man. One thing that you said today & that really rang true with me was that many Vayniacs are now gauging their pallates against yours, and I have to admit that I am doing this. Personally, I see myself as more of a new world fan than you, but I have definitely moved away from some of WAY over the top stuff (Like Yellowtail).

QOTD: Don’t really have one. See what the local guy has in the $8-12 range, but I find myself falling back on Little Penguin sometimes. However, I have been taking your advice & trying to expand into new areas and it is always fun to find a great new “everyday” wine. Recently had Ravenswood Lodi Zin for the first time in about 3 years & really enjoyed it. Also have tried my first value ‘05 Bordeaux and really enjoyed. Thanks for helping me enjoy wine even more.

    QOTD(& my first posting) –

Wishing Tree, Western Australia, 2005 Shiraz $10

Nice fruit and good finish. Tastes of plum, pepper, and licorice. Good with BBQ — have enjoyed it with hamburgers and sausage. Not a complex wine with depth, but it is reasonably priced and a good buy for what it delivers.

    Happy New Year –

QOTD: I wouldn’t say I have a “go to” wine. I rarely buy the same wine twice. The wine I have bought the most of, though is probably Hugel’s “Gentil” (usually once every 3 or 4 months at most). Other than that, I almost never buy a wine again unless it REALLY knocks my socks off.

  228. January 4, 2008

    Mr.Sato

QOTD: Nope, no every day wine in particular. I am constantly buying new bottles of wine to try. The closest I could say is an every day wine is a wine that cost me $10 or less. And I drink a lot of them, just check my wine blog. I think I average 3-5 bottles a week easily, and each is different. That doesn’t even count “events” like tastings and such. I’m like one of those wheat harvesters, but instead of wheat, its bottles of wine. LOL! I guess that makes me a whine-o! I also keep bottles around 12-20 bucks around for more special nights, like when I get all gourmet in the kitchen and come up with a fabulous culinary experience that needs something special in the glass to match. None of this accounts for the special occasion wines, which are usually between 30-50 bones. And then the ones I am keeping until maturity, which are from $10 – $50. I rarely spend more than that… I think QPR is factored exponentially… to get better than say, the 2003 Felsina “Rancia” Chianti Classico we had the other day ($35) start entering the 50 – 80 dollar market, and to get a little better than that you are in the c bills. But from the yummy “every day” $10 or less wines I’ve had to something a bit better, it might only set you back another $5 – $10. Less than 10 bones can get you a 90 point wine… then 20 bucks can get to you to 94… but to hit 95 points, you’re going to have to up the anti by 20 bucks (the Felsini Chianti being an exception to the rule).

QOTD: The broadest and most accurate answer is “Red”. To narrow it down, #1 Cabernet, #2 Nebbiolo, #3 Sangiovese, then it tapers of quickly with Pinot Noir, Malbec, Shiraz, Merlot…

  233. January 4, 2008

    vivaitalia

As far as an everyday wine the 2004 columbia crest grand estates merlot has been my go to because it’s hella delicious and it’s about the only decent wine you can find outside of a wine shop. Seriously, the had four vintages in a row rate 90 points and I hate the rest of them, this one kills it for the price. If I can make it to a shop then there are quite a few inexpensive options. The borsao tres picos and regular crianza are nice. The artazuri garnacha is great as well. Vega sindoa has a few offerings for under $10 that are respectable. As for white wine I love the kumkani chenin blanc and the marchal vouvray. Thanks for trying to bring the values to us Gary!

I also love the Italians, with Chiantis, Brunellos and Super Tuscans all over the house.

Every new bottle is a god memory for the most part, and like you have said before, it’s always a state of mind, so often, good mood with friends and family equals great wine.

I purchased a case and a half of Robert Karl Claret (Spokane) about 9 months ago for $20 a bottle because it was so good and I wanted to see how it would drink over time. I vote for a gathering in Walla two! My go to wines are mostly as follows:

I have a fondness for Washington Cab, Syrah, and Merlot.
Columbia Crest is always a good value as are Hyatt, Bernard Griffin, Powers, Preston, Gordon Bros. and many others.

Also there are some good wines from the famous “California” appellation:

I like the ‘05 Twin Fin Merlot, ‘05 Dog House Maxi’s Merlot, and ‘05 Pepperwood Merlot (which I think is largely from Russian River and a total sleeper). But the standout is Laurel Glen’s REDS, a crazy blend from Lodi and at 10.00 it kills.

There are no under $10 Oregon Pinot Noirs anymore, but they are my go to bankruptcy wines!

  253. January 4, 2008

I’m officially a “fan” of WLTV in the Facebook world…

QOTD: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I never buy the same bottle twice (unless it’s for a gift for a friend or to bring to a “social gathering” of sorts, so that I know what I’m “bringing to the table”) so I DO NOT have a everyday go-to wine to have around the house. I don’t think my “PAL” would appreciate the redundancy.

    QOFD:

Everyday wines? What, you calling me a lush or something, Gary? ;p

But, seriously folks, there isn’t much going on here wine-wise. If you asked me my everyday tea, it would probably be some countryside green tea I’m drinking. Wine. I guess it would be mostly stuff from Argentina and South America. They sell a lot of wine over here.

You should definitely go over to NC for your wine travel. Check out the Scuppernong dessert wines they have; sorta over the top with the sweetness but that’s how we like things in the South.

Vineyards in the ghetto? C’mon? Thanks for explaining the non-vintage wines though. More education please!!!

Disappointing (but still good) show from a QPR perspective. Haven’t seen many QPRs recently. I’m hoping you concentrate on QPR wines this coming year. Make it your New Year’s resolution (what is it by the way) to find at least one thunder QPR per week.

YUP … another GREAT show! And NOW, G V-N-Ch, how about a show with some of those OTHER great $8 values that you mentioned in today’s show?! Pick your very favorite four cheapies and build a show around them! We would all sure appreciate it, especially those of us, like me, that make less than 30K, because we TRULY need QPR wines that rock for everyday quaffers, and if they rock AND bring the THUNDER, then those wines are wines we simply MUST know about. ‘Nuff said!

QOTD: Navarrita Merlot … once it opens up it is a wonderful everyday wine (let it breathe for three hours at least and you’re off!); better than most sub $20 wines, and at one point WL had it for about $6, though regularly about $8. The best value I’ve found, and one of the few that I add to each case I buy from WL.

THANKS GV for this great service, your wonderful Vaynerblog, VaynerVid. Darcey and I are most grateful.

I don’t have an everyday wine per se, but I do have requirements: has to be under $12, has to be interesting (mostly old world, because that’s how I roll), AND I for the most part, I haven’t tried it before.

In fact, when I have guests I’m much more likely to have tried the wine I’m serving. I want a guaranteed hit when I have guests.

Great episode – I’ve seen some of those wines around and am always wondering about the vast array of 6-12 dollar wines out there.

Even though I try to buy lots of different wines and don’t keep a large quantity of any one particular bottle around, I am a big fan of the Cline 2005 Zinfandel and would probably settle on that as my “everyday wine.” I also have been buying a rose from Languedoc called Chateau la Roque, which is pretty decent stuff for six bucks.

QOTD: I don’t drink wine daily, as my “just-graduated-from-college-and-have-student-loans” budget doesn’t quite allow for it, but my normal dinner wine has been the ‘04 and/or ‘05 Hecula Monastrell. Amazing QPR.

QOTD- Don’t really have an everyday wine, which is part of the fun of having a lot of wine. Going down to the cellar to pick something to drink is always one of the highlights of my day.

QOTD – I dont really have a particular region or varietal. For the past 1-32 yrs we have been drinking what ever seems to be a good QPR no matter what it is. We used to go to wine tastings in the area and bring home a couple from that, but lately I pop into our local wine store bull sh*&^t with the guys/gals and ask what is new or what they like at the moment for a reasonable price…Of course I also buy from our “local” Wine Library on line.

Of late, loads of Rhone wines….)

I must suggest the Seaman’s Chapel in Port Newark/Elizabeth for a NY/NJ Vayniac meeting. GV, you could bill it as: Kermit Lynch meets Jean Genet, or something like that. I’ll bring a couple of burly minimum security convicts on probation and some handsome long shoremen.

I don’t really have an everyday wine. On non-wine drinking days, I consume swill to keep my constitution in balance. On days when I cook something decent or those times when I’m feeling particularly apocalyptic and I’ve purchased a family-sized kishka for me alone, I guess I prefer Rhones.

I don’t really have one, because there is so much great stuff out there to try, that I could drink 30 great cheap wines a day for the rest of my life and still not drink everything.. however my favorite wine I have been drinking a case of is Luddite Merlot from Coster Vineyard in Sonoma.. I also love the Garrigue Cotes du Rhone 2006

I’ll see you at the Boston Wine Expo—- I’ll be bringing a bucket of crap to toss at you; so wear a rain coat!! You’ll know me.. I’ll be wearing the Patriot raingear!

I’m drinking Pinot Noir as my every day wine………. It’s suppose to have the highest level of Reservatrol, a powerful antioxidant, good for the arteries.Suppossidly Oregan Pinots have the highest levels; then come the french Pinots.

Lately it was mainly Austrian Blaufraenkisch wines from various winemakers in the Burgenland wine region. Not the top-class ones but rather the basic wines. The 2002s and 2003s are at their best know and I still have lots in my cellar. Good for me. At $10-15 bones they are really great value. Otherwise there is always some Cotes du Rhone and Italian Lagrein wines at hand. Nice and easy-to drink wines for every occasion. Lately I am also tasting some Cahors wines if I can find them. I really like the old-world Malbec style. It doesn’t always have to be from Argentina.

I’ll see you at the Boston Wine Expo— You’ll recognize me because I’ll be wearing Patriot’s raingear carrying a bucket of crap to toss.

Been drinking Pinot Noir; allegedly the highest levels of the antioxident, reservatrol. Oregan boasts the absolute highest levels; then French Pinots. Reservatrol is suppose to keep the arteries clear.

I’ve been drinking Rex Goliath Pinot; because it’s the lowest priced spread for Pinots around here. It is a little fakie fake. But hey… the price works for every day drinking Pinot!

QOTD: Everyday wine for me is the Dobbin Lane line-up. I think every other response I leave on the forums mentions this winery. Only 8 bones per bottle and you definately get your money’s worth per bottle. Cabernet took a gold medal at the 2005 Orange County Fair and the Merlot is an awesome value. Not a big fan of the Chardonnay, but it goes well with fried chicken and fish n chips.

My most common wine nowadays… 2005 Agustinos Winemaker’s Selection Cabernet/Carmenere (Chile). Nothing spectacular and probably falls under the over oaked category, but interesting pepper and dark fruit despite the powerful vanilla. Smooth, full bodied and the best wine for under $20 in Seoul, though the selection here leaves something (a lot) to be desired.

Gary, you have to come to North Carolina! You can see the grounds where Jets stud Jerricho Cotchery set records for the Wolfpack, taste pork the way it was meant to be prepared (Eastern NC style BBQ), see a hockey team that is much better than the Devils, and visit what has been voted as the #1 place for singles and young adults (the Triangle area). Besides, every from New jersey ends up living in North Carolina anyways.

QOTD: This changes a lot for me because there really is such a thing as vintage variation, even in warm cliamtes – for whites it is the Spy Valley (NZ) Sauvignon Blanc. The great thing about everyday wine is that it’s cheap. Why would you pigeon yourself to one grape or label? If it’s cheap, it should be cheap to have a varietal. I’d hate to let this one loose, but we love the Dr. Loosen L Riesling. It’s the best damn deal I’ve found in a really really really really really long time. Goes so well with a ton of different food and it’s 7.99. Other than that, I buy Ercavio, Kenwood Pinot Noir, and Pillar box.

  410. January 7, 2008

    Wine Surfer

I was happy to see Excelsior Cabernet on the program today – that is a nice sub-$10 wine that a lot of restaurants have on their list and for very good reason in my opinion. However, I was a little upset to see you pan it as you did. I agree with you that good values can be found in the Rhone, and in the South of France, but, a cab at this price, with the texture and flavor profile that it provides at this price… I don’t know how you can do anything but sing its praises. I am a lurker! But this is my coming out party!!! I am Wine Surfer – hear me roar! I plan to comment on your shows from now on so be prepared for some “thunder”. BTW, thanx for the wristband – I do appreciate it.

QOTD: I don’t have any “everyday” wine because I am fortunate enough to have a substantial stock on hand. If I had to pick a “default” wine, it would probably be a Spanish red wine since I have a large number of them that I like that roll in under $20 a bottle.

QOTD: I don´t keep a lot of wine at home, but I do drink wine often at bars and usually ask for a Ribera del Duero. Pinna Fidelis is widely available here and easy to drink.

When I was in the US, El Coto (Rioja) was an inexpensive tempranillo that I enjoyed quite often.

  420. January 8, 2008

QOTD: My go to wine(s) is usually a Rhone varietal blend. I’m partial to Grenach/Syrah/Mourvedre blends (such as the Whistler Black Piper GSM you turned me on to, or Mas de Guiot Grenache/Syrah).

Nice show today. It’s always important to look at those quality bargain wines that allow wine drinkers the opportunity to stock up on something good…or stay away from wines that aren’t. Especially Cab, which are more difficult to find as inexpensive options than most.

QOTD: Being from Washington State, there are some great bargain wine options that I often stock up on – Columbia-Crest Grand Estate Reds, Barnard Griffin Tulip (label) Reds, & Chateau Ste. Michelle Whites, just to name a few.

Gary, Go to red wine at the moment is the Markham Merlot ‘04 which you should have on the thunder show. This wine I drank everyday by the glass on vacation in Hawaii and enjoyed with everything from fish to steak. I don’t think any Ca. Cab under $20 can give this kind of class and balance. For whites I like the ‘06 Villa Maria S.B., great wine, beautiful package and Jean Marc Brocard Bourgogne Kimmeridgian ‘05, bone dry Chardonnay that demands to be drank at cool room temperature and will only get better with time.

  434. January 8, 2008

Living in Washington, my everyday red is generally a Columbia Crest since it’s a good value and good quality. Everyday white is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, currently Nobilo. I loved the baseball analogy; does that make a “juicy” wine a Gaylord Perry wine?

  435. January 9, 2008

QOTD – Not sure if I have an every day wine – I try to mix it up ( thanks to the Thunder Show in some ways ) and try new things

    Jus in WA

QOTD: We try to drink a wide variety, so a go-to wine is pretty much anything we’ve bought more than once in the past few months. For reds, we like the Sharecroppers Pinot Noir, Las Rocas Grenache, Atteca Grenache, Septima Malbec, just to name a few. For whites, Apex II Chardonnay is always a good, value-driven choice. Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Veramonte Sauv Blanc, and the Naia Verdejo are some fast favorites off the top of my head.

  437. January 9, 2008

I have been drinking a lot of Vranac from Montenegro lately. I am hoping to change that soon. I am going on a few trips around the region and am buying wine everywhere I go.

The “house wine” style at my place is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, although we change up the producer regularly. Kim Crawford remains my favourite, but I’ve tried others that are pretty good too… like Dog Point. Cloudy Bay’s 2006 vintage was a disappointment, but I hear 2007 was better. Anyway, I digress… :-)

I tasted all the rex & goliaths together on the same day. Although most of them were not really all that notable, the Cabernet was definitely the most bland and uninteresting of the bunch…i liked their Pinot Noir best and its made with french grapes, not Cali ones…go figure

QOTD: I don’t have an everyday wine. I’d be hard pressed to think of a wine I’ve bought more than once or twice in fact…I taste new wines every week!

QOTD: I’m trying not to have an everyday wine. ANY wine is my everyday wine. Currently I’m trying to drink more earthy vegital wines because it’s easy for me to break down the fruit in a fruity wine but I’m trying to train my palate to pick up the earthy/vegital components. Plus it’s fun to get out of your comfort zone.
