Mott showin’ some personality! Nice win for the G-Men. They looked like they wanted it abot 10X more than the CowGirls. T.O. crying at the press conference was like getting a surprise free glass of Y’quem after one of the greatest meals of your life. What a treat!

    Hey GV!

Great show!! Good to have you back =-) It was important for you to take care of family, but there was certainly a gap in my afternoons. It gave me a chance to watch some archived shows, but hey it’s not the same as seeing you the same day.

QOTD: Upstate NY and on the way back to Philly a detour to the WL! I went there a few weeks back and decided I need to make frequent pilgrimages – what an amazing place!

QOTD: WL might be it- but I won’t hold my breathe on Gary making it off the third floor- Rumor has it he won’t go to the first floor cause he can not see over the wine aisles and it makes him nervous.

  24. January 14, 2008

    Shadowbird

Aww, c’mon. Patriots-Giants would not only be poetically fitting (as they played the last game of the regular season) but would probably be the best match-up out of the teams that are left. Yes, even better than Patriots-Packers.

QOTD: Don’t have one yet. I usually don’t plan these things until I have a chance to, and I usually don’t have a chance to.

  25. January 14, 2008

Most peeps think Pats/Gmen would be the ideal Superbowl matchup – you know, “old world” Titan vs “new world” Adonis QB – I think the ratings for whomever is carrying the show this year would be through the roof. Was rooting for Giants yesterday (rare for me to root for NY team).

QOTD: Wine vacation? Hmmm, well Tuscany would be nice (just dreaming), or the Languedoc in France would be acceptable :-) . Well, I will visit WL at some point, goes without saying (need to save up some serious greenbacks for that as I will undoubtedly go nuts).

QOTD: Funny you should ask that. I have decided that I don’t want to go to work on my Birthday, so I will be making my first pilgramage from Mahwah, NJ down to WINELIBRARY tomorrow (1/15). I have cleared out a spot in my trunk for the box(es) of wine that I know will be returning with me.

    WOOO HOOOO!!!

Don’t you dare retire the “Sniffy Sniff!”

QOTD: Planning on visiting relatives in Fallbrook, CA, so we’ll definitely be hitting up Temecula. Also, I’m sure I’ll be doing some business trips out to our office in Roseville, CA–Napa here we come (just haven’t decided on vineyards)! Might check out Castello di Amorosa.

Chocolate covered cherries sounds great, I’m going to get me one of those Morgante Neros! Keep ‘em coming, Gary.

QOTD: My wine vacation for this year isn’t set yet but it will involve watching the Jets play the Raiders in Oakland. When the date is announced, I’ll make arrangements with Gary to come to California. We’ll visit Napa or Sonoma or, better yet, the El Dororado hills on Saturday. On Sunday, we’ll have a blast as our teams duke it out!

  39. January 14, 2008

    Christopher J

Gary, you should raise a ’sniffy-sniff’ banner in the rafters when you retire it.

Seriously, it is great to have you back Gary!

QOTD: Since we are going to Disney World this year, I am really going to try to go during the Food and Wine Festival. I heard it was supposed to be pretty good.

    Hey Gary

Glad to see that you’re back. This is basically my first post, so I’ve got to say that I’m hooked on your show and was running out of old episodes to watch while you were away.

No place to go for a wine vacation this year, but was in Beaune last June. Though, I was really sick, so the experience wasn’t what I had hoped.

I’ll try to get up to the Wine Library to see you sometime. I’m only a few hours away.

    Cheers from Philly,

QOTD: My wife and I are going to Napa on President’s Day weekend. We were in Sonoma last summer and like to alternate between the two – good food, good wine and some time away from the every day routine.

Late April: Landing in SFO, hoping to connect with BrandonM for an offline, then stopping at Pelican Ranch to meet with KenP (or see both simultaneously). From there south to Paso Robles where we hope to arrange a couple of private tastings, maybe stop at a few tasting rooms. With luck we’ll meet my daughter and her SO.

Pity, the Morgante used to be available locally, but now it isn’t. I think the only Nero available out here in the stix is the Feudo Arancio. I tried it once and it didn’t get my attention, but then I was a little busy.

When I vacation I like to drive, so I don’t know if I want to mix that with wine so much.

  58. January 14, 2008

Great episode. I was just in an Italian restaurant this weekend where their wine list was full of Nero D’Avola and I had know idea what they were. QOTD: Washington State

Happy Monday – glad to see you up to your usual antics – slopping wine all over the place (I know…I know it’s for the homies) – and generally having a good time.

QOTD: No wine trips planned for the year. . . although all of us at AmericanWinery are planning a trip to Sacramento (we are driving, so maybe a pit stop or two) for the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium at the end of this month. I’m sure we’ll be tasting (drinking?) wine while there. Is that a show that you would ever attend?? We’ve never been so just curious what it’s like. . . .

    mikey lennon

Uh oh….someone is checking craigslist and the job ads tonight :(

Welcome back, nice to see Mott up there supporting the Giants and to see Gary back.

QOTD: Planned wine vacation, either visit Wineries in Washington when my brother moves up there in May and/or if I move to the east coast ill have to stop in at the Wine Library and be awed.

  67. January 14, 2008

    KennyMac

Good to have you back, Gary. Hope you’re vacation was at least somewhat restful, even with all the Vanyiacs begging for your return.

QOTD: Okanagan Valley, BC. for sure. We go there every year, as it’s only a few hours from my home in Vancouver and absolutely beautiful. Be nice to make it to Walla Walla as well.

  68. January 14, 2008

    Aleksandr

QOTD: I am flying my best friend from Florida sometime later this and we are going to do a Napa Valley trip. Its pretty much in my backyard. We both turn 21 this year so its time to break out of our cacoons and turn into vayniac butterflies…

    Go Pats!

  69. January 14, 2008

    Dominus

Well, as always, you have lifted me up out of my doldrums. Glad you are back. I have been mourning for 24 hours so it’s time to move on.

QOTD: I’ve always wanted to go to Strasbourg and take the Alsatian wine trip. On top of that, I plan on stopping into your abode unannounced and having a “sniffy sniff” of Dom with you.

    Cheers!
    Dom

P.S. My ONLY incorrect prediction through the entire playoffs so far was, of course, the Colts! :(

Welcome back, GV! My Super Bowl nightmare would have been Dallas-New England, can any two QBs ever be more hyped than Brady-Romo?

QOTD – Taking my wife for her first trip to Napa Oct 9 – 12th, already set to visit with the Seps at Storybook Mountain Winery in Calistoga

  72. January 14, 2008

    Fred Liu

    QOTD:…eh…not yet, but good suggestion!
I’m still searching for those Torrontes in my most visited wine shops, but still not a one yet…Whatever, I’ll get them!

    Great back episode, great return.
    All the best, and balabalabalabala…:)

Good to have you back Gary!!!

QOTD: I am getting married this year so my hunny moon will be my wine vacation, not sure where we are going yet??? I think a Sandals resort.

  74. January 14, 2008

    Moselman

Nice of you to give Mott the chance to enjoy the Giants’ glimmer. You’re looking greatly refreshed from the break.

QOTD Will definitely look around Walla Walla (already Google-Earthed the wineries) on our way down to visit my kid brother snowbirding in Phoenix, probably in March. He’ll be looking for us to bring down some Okanagan juice, too.

  75. January 14, 2008

NNNNNNNoooooooo! Not the sniffy-sniff!! If you retire it, we must celebrate! With free shipping!

Great intro! When I saw Mott sitting there I was thinking, “Uh-oh”

QOTD: A wine vacation? I’ll be happy just to get a vacation this year!

  78. January 14, 2008

    Kirk

Gary, it is great to have you back…I seriously hope you get some love in the comments today. It’s also great to see the Mott-ster infront of the camera. My planned vacation is two fold…One is Oregon the first week of the New Year (in fact…I’m already back from it) I also hope to get back out there for OPC for the industry. I’d also like to try to get to the fingerlakes or someplace like that…but time will tell. Welcome home

  82. January 14, 2008

    Sara

    Welcome back, Gary!

QOTD: Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll go on a wine vacation in 2008. 18 months out of college and living in Boston, a wine vacation is neither convenient nor within my price range.

Question for Gary or anyone else: What are the most overrated and the most overlooked wine vacation spots?

  83. January 14, 2008

    luvgrapesqueezings

QOTD: Well, I’d like to think that a bunch of us can get together near WL for TatumVay’s b-day in April.
I’ll have to stir-up something in the forums.

  84. January 14, 2008

QOTD: we’re going to New Zealand as one half of our honeymoon – not sure which region yet but probably Marlborough or Central Otago.

  86. January 14, 2008

    GR8wine

Another nice show Gary ang GRRREAAT to have you back.
I don’t have a specific wine vacation planned but will work in visiting wineries with several of my other vacations.
    - visiting Northern California wineries while on business in that area
    - Michigan wineries when I ride to the Harley-Davidson reunion in Milwaukee
    - Texas wineries when visiting parents and friends
Is there anything in Florida worth visiting? got a big trip there in June.

  87. January 14, 2008

    amgryger

    Welcome back!

QOTD: Hmm. Chance of a real wine vacation for me in 2008 doesn’t look so good. Maybe I can do a trip to Wine Library and/or Long Island.

    amgryger

    Did Mott win a bet?

  89. January 14, 2008

Hey Gary…our wine vacation will probably be out to Napa again. We do Napa and Russian River every year because we enjoy the area, get into the wine, food and mud baths. We’ve done a road trip to the Wine Library over the holidays….was great fun. We missed you! Hope you are there the next time we visit.

  90. January 14, 2008

    Marc

    Welcome back GV!

I’ll be checking out some more wineries in China this year. China Silk Wines in Urumqi in March for starters. Come on along everybody…this is a great way to experience China!

We MUST find the Morgante Nero D’avola…chocolate covered cherries…yummmmmm.
We have never tried this grape. Great show. It was fun to see Mott, too. I still want to see the “link it up, Mott” shirt.

QOTD: Wine vacation. Hmmm…..we don’t usually even take a vacation. Are you going to North Carolina? We might make a vacation out of that.

Great to have you and Mott back!!!!!

QOTD: I’ll be going to France for an internship at a winery, so I’m kinda counting that as my wine vacation.

  102. January 14, 2008

    Kev and Ams

Gary should replace sniffy-sniff with Smell-boâ„¢. It’s a move that requires you to lift the elbow of the sniffing arm during sniffy time.

  103. January 14, 2008

    Fiorentina!

MOTT!!! YOU LIED TO ME!!! ah I’m just kidding around…congrats on the HUGE upset!
QotD – I think that my soon to be wife and I will be going to Portugal for our honeymoon…exciting stuff!

WELCOME BACK, GARY!!! We all missed you. I’ve gotta try a nero one of these days…

QotD: Get to honeymoon this year, in France. Hopefully I’ll be able to convince the fiancee to hit up a vineyard or two.

  106. January 14, 2008

    Joel M

Welcome back, GV. Nice start too, with some different wines. I am definitely planning a WL trip in spring. Trying to save some bones. Maybe a trip to San Fran and Napa this fall.

  107. January 14, 2008

    Characterlost

Glad to see your back and all is well Gary. i enjoyed the sicily episode, never had one, now i’ll be sure to pick one up.

QOTD: i live in Seattle, really going to make an effort to spend some time in Walla Walla. Its so cold there in the winter though, so i may wait till the spring

  108. January 14, 2008

    Shad

I think for all the Vayniacs when I say- Welcome Back Gary!!!!!! Man, I must be turning into some kind of freak to miss The Thunder Show this much…anyway…Happy to see the enthusiasm is there even after a bitter sweet vacation.

QOTD-No wine vacation planned (not unless Walt Disney World has a wine festival I don’t know about yet)

  109. January 14, 2008

    RH

    Welcome back.

We are going to Piemonte in the fall.

  110. January 14, 2008

    John Farrin

I think the reason that you’re so wildly successful is that I truly believe that you missed doing the show as much as we missed you not doing it. I am, as a heterosexual man, embarrassed at how much emptier last week was :)

QOTD: I live near Napa/Sonoma so a couple of trips to those locales

  111. January 14, 2008

    Grapestompper (Dave)

    Gary…Dude,

First of all stop wiggin’ us out with Mott like that, hiliarious! Second I love Mott because he is a huge GIANTS fan. Third if you were a Giants fan I would stop lurking forever. That’s the only fault I can find with you, The JETS?? Come on! Wine, The Giants and Nero D’avola… what more could you possibly ask for. G-MEN ALL THE WAY!!!!!

  112. January 14, 2008

    KyleLikesTies

Great to see you back … -and- Fine job with the intro, Mott!

QoTD: I haven’t planned any holidays yet … I’d love to visit South Africa and stop in at some vineyards / wineries, but we’ll have to see if that’s realistic.

  113. January 14, 2008

    TennLee

QOTD: A weekend in Virginia around Charlottesville.

  114. January 14, 2008

    QOTD:

Oh my, that is a good question and one that embarrasses me since I do not have a wine vacation planned. But the offer to hang with you and later an opera at the met is tempting…

  115. January 14, 2008

    Grapestompper (Dave)

“I’m just playing with myself here…” I think he’s combined cold medication and alcohol.

  116. January 14, 2008

    thepiratedoc

Just when I thought I might never get my WLTV back … GV delivers! With a wine I’d never even heard of. Yeah, I’m a knob …

QOTD: Taking a little trip across the pond to sample Scottish ‘wine’ and golf. Just a wee dram, laddie, a wee dram!! Maybe a claret or two in the British Isles.

Could I really bring my family to WL for vacation? May have to work on that. You guys have Wii for the boys? It could happen …

  117. January 14, 2008

    The Fanjestic

QoTd: None yet, but the year is young my friend. Realisticly, Napa or Sonoma is where we would go – coming from San Fran. But that might be wishful thinking!

  118. January 14, 2008

    Grapestompper (Dave)

    Great show as usual GV.
QOTD: Napa Valley -first time bringing my wife and my first return since 1994. I can’t wait!

  120. January 14, 2008

    Big Nick

Nice to see you back Gary. You can’t retire Sniffy Sniff. My boys and I sit at the laptop every night to hear you say that. You would essentially end my wine time with the boys (age 10 and 3).

QOTD: The wife and I are planning a trip up and down the coast of Michigan to visit the local vineyards.

  121. January 14, 2008

Enjoy it while you can Mott the Packers got the game next week. Gary talking bad about the Packers sorry they can’t be like the Jets and make only one appearance in the Super Bowl 39 years ago. It’s all in good fun. Sorry about your loss and hope your year goes better.

QOTD: None planned but that can be changed.

  127. January 14, 2008

    Ernest_G

Welcome back, GV! Nice job Mott. . .I really thought was doing the show this time around.

QOTD: I don’t travel. . .which is kind of sad. BUT, I’d love to go to the Wine Library. I wonder if I could fly back with some wine? Or would airport security drink it all just to make sure I wasn’t up to any shinanigans. :P

  129. January 14, 2008

    Dan WI

Don’t be dissing Brett, the football gods won’t be happy. Not to mention WIvayniacs. Packers 27 Giants 17. Patriots 31 Bolts 10. Jets 2nd pick in draft or is it 3rd?

  131. January 14, 2008

    Senor Sangria

    What Up Gary V!

QOTD: This year we are being conservative on money… so no trips for us. We will be buying many bottles of wine at different price points and trying them out. Today we bought 3 at an $8 and are testing them out. Today was Mano a Mano wine…

Next week we’ll bump it up to $15… But we will be taking a trip to Portugal early next year. We will experiment with wine there.

    Good to have you back!

    Cheers
    - Rick

  132. January 14, 2008

    Cliff and Darcey

Hey GeeVee … welcome back! We definitely missed our fix of WLTV!

Thanks once again for bringing us another lesser known varietal!

QOTD: Actually … Darcey and I may be coming to NYC March 17, for a week, for vacation!!! We are freakin’ excited about the idea. We won’t have a car but we sure would like to visit you and/or the Wine LIB (maybe an easy train ride??? Pray tell)! So … maybe we’ll finally meet for a glass or two, if you’re in town then!

Keep up your good work; you have some very dedicated fans!

  133. January 14, 2008

We are heading to Walla Walla for a three day weekend for President’s Day! Less than five weeks and counting!

  134. January 14, 2008

    Kathryn

Not that we didn’t miss you, but we were so stoked to see Mott on the other side of the table! Maybe once a week we can have “Mott Time” where he picks and tastes a bottle…..then he can go off on a million tangents and yell at someone else to “Link It Up!”

QOTD: I’m thinking of relocating to the Salem, OR area. I have some family up in Washington, so maybe I’ll make a check-it-out/family reunion/visit Walla Walla trip.

    Welcome back!

I visited the Wine Library a couple of days before Christmas, and it was packed. Probably do the same next year as I travel back to Jersey for Xmas every year.

Retire sniffy-sniff? You must be joking. Next you’ll be saying you’re going to retire the Oak Monster. Ridiculous.

  140. January 14, 2008

    Gary,

I am planning my first trip to Napa for spring ‘09 so I can make the Vayniac Cab release party on same trip. I am headed to Vegas mid March, which is a great place for drinking wine. Other then that I will try to make a trip through the Finger Lakes.

  142. January 14, 2008

Can’t wait for the Patriots vs. The New York Football Giants in the Superbowl.

QOTD: We have our annual trip planned to Herman, MO and my wife and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary this year so we have started kicking around the idea of going to Sonoma. I hope it works out because she deserves it.

QOTD: My beautiful girlfriend who loves you so much (grr.) will be in Cape Town until June. I’ll be visiting her in March or early April and we’ll be doing a wine tour. Can you email me about places we should try? Thanks Gary!

    Keep “sniffy sniff”; retire “radool”.
QOTD: no definite plans, but Walla Walla and Napa or Sonoma look good. My friend Robin and I will be in NYC April 14 for operas on the 15th and 16th – I don’t think we’ll make it to New Jersey, but you could join us for dinner in NYC – Morrell’s on the 14th – pencil it in – 6:30 or so.

  150. January 14, 2008

    wrc105

Welcome back Gary! I haven’t tried a Nero…so it looks like I’m off to get one tomorrow to try it out.

QOTD: I have three maybe four options for wine vacations:
    1. Winemakers dinner in April at a Napa winery.
    2. Outside of Toronto.
    3. Paris (there has to be some good wines there…).
    4. Does Scotland have any wineries?

  151. January 14, 2008

    jbebeau

You finally brought a lurker out. What did it? Favre, Roger Clemens-esque? Favre is awesome, he loves football like you love wine. He has fun out there. I don’t see how you can’t love the guy.

And don’t worry, your worst case scenario isn’t happening. Packers by 10.

  152. January 14, 2008

    JamesN.

QOTD; no wine destinations planned this year, and Europe is not an option with the dollar at all time lows. but I have enjoyed wine vacations in the past.

    Wine Not?

Hey Gary! So happy to have you back! I’ve been waiting for your episode all day like a little kid at Christmas time!

And please don’t get rid of “sniffy sniff”…it’s just one of your Gary-isms we all love!

QOTD: Funny you should ask! I just booked my flight to Spain for March. I’ll be visiting a friend who is living there for a year and she is planning to take me to several bodegas while I’m there! I’m so excited about that! She lives right near the Rioja region so I know it’s going to be great!

  157. January 14, 2008

THis was too wierd. I am drinking the Morgante, and decided to check out today’s instalment before calling it a night. ANd GY does a whole Nero show, incuding the wine in me belly. Too cool. I feel like I was one step ahead of GV. Go Sicilia.

QOTD – Lake George. Family friendly.

  158. January 14, 2008

    Mike S,

Welcome back Gary Vee! In case you missed it, oyez.org is a great resource for supreme court info. Fascinating stuff it is.

AOTD: I’ve been meaning to go to Cave B winery in George, WA. Either that or down to Walla Walla where I hear they have pretty good wine. ;) I really have no excuse because it’s less than two hours from where I live.

    Taylor-S

Welcome back Gary – I’ve only been watching for a couple of months, but really missed WLTV last week.

Looking for the Chargers to take down the Pats this weekend. Going to Oregon for my first ever ski trip with some buddies and plan to check out the local wines while I’m there. Also will take a trip to Temecula Valley, CA later in the year for a quick wine excursion. Maybe not the best known, but it’s close to SD.

QOTD: Taste Washing ton in Seattle…see you there GV
Congrats to the Giants fans on beating my Boys! Did you see the frown on Jerry Jones face? His arms looked kinda long as well, must be from all those Super Bowl rings!

    you should do a show.

  170. January 15, 2008

Spreading the word about you over here. You mixed up strawberry for definite cherry around the 11:40 mark. For that you get a stupid demoralizing 15yrd penalty early in the 4rd quarter to kill the Giants. Pats > Giants by 17.

    Randy
    MOSS : LINK IT UP!!!

Will see you at the Boston Wine Expo.

Nice EXTREME pour on the last wine, Gary! It wouldn’t surprise me to know that Mott probably got his feet wet on that pour.

QOTD: Man, would I love to come up to NJ and see you and the Wine Library this year! I really don’t know what type of wine vacation we might try, but I would love to go tasting in Washington. Visited Napa last year, and it was great!

  175. January 15, 2008

    Rock n Roll Andy

I wish I could go on a wine vacation but I am buying a 15 acre ranch in the Dallas area this month. About 5 acres forest and 10 acres pasture . Then I will be surrounded by many square miles of forest. I am from Chicago , I have lived in Dallas before, but never owned that much land. Thats my vacation!!!! Maybe I will strategically plant wines around my property and and act like I am doing a wine walk. It’s all about the imagination KIDS!!!!

    Grape Expectations

QOTD: Because I have family in the Bay Area I usually get down there a couple of times a year. So we do Napa/Sonoma, of course. Last year we went down to Paso Robles. This year I’m thinking we might check out Lodi and/or Amador county. And I’d like to get out to Walla Walla for at least a weekend. And I’ll be in Oregon for 10 days in July for the Olympic Track & Field trials and we’ll most likely visit a couple of places in the Willamette Valley. I’d like to get down to Abecela in Roseburg, OR and check out what they’re doing with tempranillo and albarino and grenache and dolcetto in the beautiful Umpqua Valley.

  182. January 15, 2008

    ryptide

    Welcome back, Gary & Mott!

Have had a couple Cananaus from Sicily lately. Very interesting region and grape, the wine has a very soft mouthfeel.

  185. January 15, 2008

    Mike Z

WOOOOOOAAAHHHHHH….. What was that about Brett Favre??? Like Roger Clemens??? Are you saying he CHEATS??? You’ll have a lot of Cheesheads to answer to if you ain’t careful, GV. You don’t have to like him, but… just tread lightly, my friend.
QOTD: Wine trip this year? Hopefully we’ll head up the CA coast again and explore some more Anderson Valley wineries.

  186. January 15, 2008

    Gary,

You’re my personal hero. I can’t express how much I enjoy WLTV!

Two things… first, Brett Favre is gonna make the Giants look silly.
    Second, please don’t fire anyone!

QOTD: We’re going to head to Wollershiem Winery here in Wisconsin for the annual Grape Stomp festival. It’s great time where people enjoy the local crafts and usually end up drinking too much.

    MCN

p.s. Where’s my Wine of the month club?!

  191. January 15, 2008

    Erik Klumpp

I am headed to Walla Walla, for a wine excursion that shall be straight up balla? Horrible rhyme I know, but I am lurker who made his new year resolution, to post on at least three wine videos a week. I am a member of the CKC and am looking for a job that will get me the income that will allow me to develop my pallet. I love your show, and you didn’t answer my question. All well. Go Packers, since my Donkeys suck so bad.

  192. January 15, 2008

    Augustus

And so he returns. Good to have you back, Gary. Well, if 2007 is any sort of indicator, I’ll be making three or four wine trips to the Central Coast of California this year – first one is in February. My brother lives in Manhattan, and I am in the city four times a year as well. I’d like to come visit the Wine Library in 2008, as well, while back east. You should set up an event in Manhattan at one of the wine bars in the city and invite us to join you (at our own expense, of course). I would buy a plane ticket in a heart beat.

Also missed your “Hello Everybody” greeting and you being lit up, that makes things right, right away.

I’m trying to keep my mouth shut here, but this sniffy sniffy retirement deal is pissing me off. I vote you keep it. If you’re getting heat from people sending you emails saying they don’t like it, me and others say “up yours” to them.

If it’s from your dad, tell him I’m older than him and I think you should keep it. All the best to you and your crew……..Chargers/Giants

Great ep Gary, I’m gonna seek out Nero at my local wineshop.
Qotd: No firm plans yet, got a wedding in Hawaii (this week), a baby shower in Corvallis, Oregon next month and another wedding in Vegas in March. Trip to Japan in April (sake tastings?), so bummer part, don’t have much time to do some winery tastings (maybe I could sneak one in at Corvallis ??) Shh, don’t tell my wife. Still got the rest of the year, but it’s filling up fast.

Great to have you back and don’t retire the sniffy, sniffy, I likey, like it !

Gary, glad to see that you are back in good form. I don’t understand the need to do away with your trade-mark sniffy-sniff, but hey… it’s your show. (We just watch.)

QOTD: Monthly trips to Napa Valley and up Monte Bello mountain. But this summer a coworker is visiting his mother land (France) and he wants to drag my palette through Burgundy’s soils. To date, I’m more of a Rusian River Pinot fan (the 2005’s are turning out great!), but we’ll see. It figures that I always go to France when the dollar is at its weakest a(last visit was 1995).

Good to have my WLTV fix for the day again. Welcome back GV! My wife got me a copy of “The Nine” for Christmas, but I haven’t had to opportunity to read it yet, but I’m into the Supreme Court as well. If you are really interested in the Supreme Court, you need to take a trip to Washington, D.C and sit in on oral argument of a case you are interested in. Just check out this site http://www.supremecourtus.gov/ and click on the Oral Arguments link for more information. Just be sure to tape a couple shows before you go.

Great to have you back Gary! Hope you had a great vacation and rested up a bit.

Gary that’s so cool that you mentioned Skeleton today! One of my best friends is a skeleton runner, and is in the running to go to the 2010 olympics as well! I’ll ask him, but I’m pretty sure he knows Caleb. he hasnt updated this site in a while, but this video shows Lake Placid pretty well. http://www.rit.edu/~cen4920/Skeleton/media/movies/WHEC/WHECNews.html

QOTD: my planned wine vacation will be checking out a vineyard or two in Minnesota. My boyfriend’s family lives out there and I’m going out to meet them this summer and have been promised some MN wine… should be interesting. Other than that I’m sure I’ll take a trip to a few fingerlake vineyards to work on some photography and research. I’m also supposedly going to a wedding on Long Island in July, so it’ll be tough to resist checking out a vineyard or two out there.

Welcome back, Gary! We missed you!

Hey, Gary. When you held up that first wine the label said “IGT Calabria,” so it isn’t from Sicily.

I understand that Sicilian producers have been doing some recent exploring/experimenting with their local terroirs, and they are finding some spots that are especially good for Nero d’Avola. I know that at tastings I have tried some lesser known Nero d’Avola’s (among other Sicilian wines) that were just fantastic. I’ll have to see if I can dig out my tasting notes.

QOTD. I don’t know. Hanging out with you at the Wine Library sounds pretty good.

    Welcome back!

Glad you’re back, Gary. I missed the show more than I could imagine! Enough so that you got a lurker to come out for the first time.

    I like Nero D’avola a lot, it’s a great bargain wine.

No wine vacation for me this year, unless going to the local wineries 45 minutes away counts. I will be visiting Chicago in a month and I’m certainly going to hit up some of the big stores there.

Great show! I love Morgante Nero D’avola nad I’ve had several others in the sub-$15 price range that are really good as well.

QOTD: I have been threatening to make a trip from Cleveland to visit the Wine Library. :-)

I am considering either a trip to Oregon/Washington State or, possibly, a trip with Mat Garretson to the Rhone – but that one’s kind of pricey. We shall see…

Gary/Mott – It’s good to see ya’ll back with obviously no rust on the wheels from a week off. We were all going through the DTs out here in WLTV land.

QOTD: We already have a trip planned to concentrate on Russian River Valley this year (beginning of April).

Welcome back G-man. I must tell you, it was tough going a week without the Thunder Show. Great intro with the Mottster Man. And what are you going to replace “sniffy sniff” with? Snorty snort???? I dont think so.

QOTD: Try to explore more of the North Carolina wines and hopefully find some worth recommending to the Thundershow.

  248. January 15, 2008

    Hi Gary

Good to have you back in the saddle! Sicily has a lot of hidde treasures but a lot of crap, as well. Chardonnay from Planeta is a bomb and inexpensive. Grillo is a very good native white varietal. Morgante is an all time classic. It is always worth it to try something from Sicily. It has the sun and the reflexions from the sea inside.

  249. January 15, 2008

Jersey Girl…. I live in New Hampshire, but am fascinated by wines from cold hardy grapes. The “holy grail” of northern winemakers is a really good red wine made from such grapes, and they are getting close in Minnesota. Alexis Bailly Winery makes a wine called “Voyager”, which, I think, is a blend of Frontenac,, a cold hardy grape developed in Minnesota, and Merlot, kept alive by burrying the vines in the winter. It is very good! Conell has developed a grape called “Noiret” which is said to have a great future, but I’ve yet to taste any. Tell us what you find when you get back! My email is hpknslaw@comcast.net. I’m an old Wine Educator.

Washington state is holding a big wine tasting — 60 wineries, or so — in Austin, where I live, so I’ll be going to that. I plan to taste some of the Cougar Crest wines. Maybe some wouldn’t call that a vacation, but I’m pretty excited about it.

My first real travelling wine vacation is a one-day trip to Napa or Sonoma county in February. My second 2008 wine vacation, so far, is a week in Oregon, Willamette Valley. At some point I’ll visit some Texas wineries — sort of a mini-vacation, since I live in the area.

    I’m glad you are back.

QOTD? Wine vacation? We’re there! We’re on the end of a Chile-Argentina-Chile Wine tour right now! We’re scooping up some wines that we can’t get up North. Luggage is getting heavy! :-)

Great show – I’m a big fan of Nero D’avola!

QotD – Okanagan Valley, in British Columbia. It’s close by…(well, for those of us in BC concerned about our Carbon Footprint at least), and has some excellent smaller producers making some excellent wines in varying styles.

    Gary,

It’s great to see you back in the WLTV chair again. Chocolate covered cherries sound good so I’ll have to give the Nero D’avola a try.

Nice ep Gary, I love NdA ever since having some at an Italian restaurant a couple of years ago. I also managed to get in a 1st post on Ep 386 while I was watching this!!!

Can you really retire “Sniffy Sniff”, wouldn’t that be admitting that there’s something wrong with it? – why retire something that works?

QOTD – Not planned yet, there’s an embryonic idea to do something French again, maybe Alsace, but it’s too early to tell.

Not planning a wine vacation. My daughter will graduate from high school this year and it is really her choice. She is not a drinker, nor a wine fan. Therefore, I won’t make her go.

I went to the Willamette Valley in late 2007 and tasted seveal Pinots at some of the small producers. That was a good trip.

Future plans – Toscana and Napa.

I’ve lurked a bunch here but commented little. I know you love the Jets [I've been a long time fan myself--even used to go watch Spring training at Hofstra U. with my dad when I was a tot and got bunches of autographs in the early 70s], but why is a Pats/Giants S-Bowl your biggest nightmare? I thought the last game was great, and being a NYer who went to school in Boston, I would look forward to the game. It would also mean seeing either a historic undefeated year or ‘the other’ NY team winning the game. I usually can’t watch many games due to the need to focus on work, but I’d watch that game.
QOTD-I’ve been trying to get to Tuscany for the past 2-3 years, but things keep interfering. Depending on our budget [and possible upcoming events in our kids' lives], I hope to get there this year or next.
PS I’m curious in your obsession with the Supreme Court. I’m a physician, but one of my dream jobs would be to be a Supreme Court Justice.

It’s sweet that you’re getting into the Supreme Court. If you’re ever in DC, you have to go and check it out and hear an argument if you happen to go on a day that they are hearing arguments. Check out http://www.oyez.org. It is a great website dedicated to the Supreme Court and they have audio from the arguments. I suggest pick on of their cases on the home page and skip around within the video to listen to the various justices’ dialogue with the lawyer. Very interesting stuff. I was lucky enough to go to law school in DC and in my last semester (this past spring) attended an argument. It is truly inspiring. Also, studying the Constitution really opens one’s eyes to how great our country is and how brilliant our founders were. Glad to hear of your new interest.

dude – planned wine trip of 2008 will be to Oregon to visit my best friend, snowboard, and try some pinots.

Southern Oregon. If you’ve never been there you’re missing out. Go to Ashland during the Shakespeare festival and cruise around to all the wineries in the area. And no it’s not pinot country but home to some great wineries such as Weisinger’s of Ashland! Just beware the bears in the vineyard.

Good to have you back, and thanks for introducing me to yet another region/grape I don’t know.
QOTD: We have great wine trip planned for July 2008! My wife and I are traveling to Sonoma with my parents and my sister and her husband for six days. We’ve rented a house in Kenwood and plan to have an awesome time. All three couples honeymooned in the area, but the six of us have never traveled there – or anywhere for that matter – as a family.

GV, how strange that I watched this show today considering I have a hunk of guanciale in my pocket and I’m soon on my way home to do something with it and buy some Italian wine on the way. And stranger even, I bought it before the Times came out with the article on pasta dishes using guanciale. I’m so psyched to have it in my pocket. It’s better than a pocket full of boudin noir.

My family probably won’t be doing a wine vacation this year, or any vacation for that matter, unless we can sneak into the wheel well of the closest jumbo jet to the first hole in a JFK fence we can find and strap all of us in with some duct tape and hope for a wine producing destination. Other than the occasional excursion to Rego Park or Corona, this summer I’m planning on dedicating myself to grilling lots of meats and some octopus (I’m dying for some grilled octopus on a 95 degree day) at home, drinking with family and friends and sweating (Greenpoint, Brooklyn is really lovely in August especially if sewage treatment fumes blow in around dusk to mix with scents of mint and lavender in my garden).

One of our favorite everyday wines is Colosi Nero d’Avola ($8 bones). Nothing earthshattering, just the typical chocolate cherries with some nice pepper on the finish. QOTD: We’re going to Seattle in June for a conference and were going to explore Washington State for a few days afterward. Any winery suggestions?

    Hey GV,

How did you get George Clooney to open today’s show? And why was he decked out in Giant’s garb? Was his Dolphin outfit at the dry cleaners?

    Just wondering,

Worst scenario? Nah! Best scenario. After destroying G-Bay, Gints topple Bill Bellacheat’s Patsy’s, making 18-1 the worst record in the NFL! Stick to wine Gary, its less painful than bleeding green!

Gary, just sitting here with my wife and enjoying a bottle of 2005 Santa Anastasia ‘Contempo’ Nero D’Avola and watching your show. QOTD: wine vacation – based on your recommendation of Pomum Cellars, we vacationed in Yakima Valley. The wines were excellent and we enjoyed the area. BTW we picked up two magnums of 2005 Shya red. Javier, wine wine maker, was an excellent host. Great recommendation and keep up the good work.
