GV – thanks for the whites! QOTD = Italy. Should fix that.

Nice show today. Love the whites!

You tried to retire it but it still sneaks in there… the “Sniffy Sniff”!

See you at Taste! If you have some extra time I definitely have some recommendations.

    QOTD: Confusing? The PUNT.

QOTD: Most confusing? When evaluating a new wine: distinguishing whether the aromas and flavors of the wine are familiar from those I’ve experienced in life completely separate from wine… or whether they are just aromas and flavors that I’ve experienced in other wines I’ve had in the past.

QOTD: I don’t get how so much bad wine is being sold and consumed.

Once again great Episode, Gary. The white Cotes du Rhone sounds good. The whites are overlooked so much…

Superb episode – but March 22nd???? No!!!! That is Easter weekend. There is no way I can make it to Wine Library. ARGHHHHHH!!! :-(

QOTD: The thing that still confuses me about wine is the labelling. I get Bordeaux and the US (although I HATE that the USA allows wineries to label wine as single varietal with only 75% of it in there – whatever happened to truth in advertising – yeah, right!), and some other parts of the world, but I still have a hard time with a lot of Spanish wines, some Italian wines, and German Rieslings as well as some places in France other than Bordeaux or the Rhone.

Awesome show GV and I am (was) one the peeps you ranted about, before I woke up and smelled the white wine!

QOTD- I’m confused about why I like being confused, about wine.

Gary I agree. White wines are very overlooked by most of the wine drinkers, since I started watching the show, I am really enjoying whites much more, almost more than reds.

QOTD: Finding places that sell a decent selection of wine so that I can buy something I see on WLTV.

Most confusing thing his why do people pay so much many for wine? It’s only fermented grape juice.

Did you know that Tocai Friuliano as a name has been banned in Italy due to EU wine of origin protection laws. The Hungarians got a little upset that the name was too close to their Tokai wines in name and lost out as the Hungarians were first to produce their wines

I’m sorry, I could not concentrate in today’s show. I am still reeling from your accusation that Brett Favre uses performing enhancing drugs.

Love the love for the whites! QOTD: I remember this QOTD from a while ago and my response hasnt changed: Burgundy. I just dont get it.

QOTD: By Far the most confusing, why the same wines aren’t available throughout the U.S. I wish I could get the all the same wines here in the Midwest and be able to taste along w/G.V.in NY!

QOTD: I can’t figure out how to afford this habit

QOTD: I was going to say that it’s really hard to find different wines around where I live, but I just discovered a local wine shop that carries lots of different things, so that’s not it. I think I’d say that picking out flavors is still really hard for me. Sometimes it’ll be familiar, but I just can’t pinpoint it. I’ve only been really getting into wines for about the last year, so I’m still a beginner.

QOTD- I can’t remember what the primary varietals are in most regions in Europe, or whether Cab is dominant in Right Bank or Left Bank Bordeaux.

I have had one or 2 CdR Whites, and they were amazingly complex for a white wine. Just haven’t seen them in a while, and I generally do prefer reds, especially in the winter.

Yep, I have 2 bottles of white Rhones in the cabinet and normally buy 2-3 per month. Why do you assume that everyone here only drinks reds. I have an equal number of both in storage and am always looking for whites to enhance strong tasting fish or pork dishes.

QOTD: Hey G.V.,here’s why im confused… and facinated. Greece has been producing wine for more than 2000 years now, and i know they have some exxxceptional value, i wonder WHY they are so hard to find. I live in Quebec(canada)and in each SAQ(wine shops owned by government)they dont have more than 2 bottles of greek wine. Whats the deal… are they doing any marketing overthere or just keepin every bottle for themself ??? cmon guys.. ya’ll can keep the ouzo just send us some Vino !

I am with you on being an advocate for white wine. I haven’t had many Rhone white wines. Will definitely “seek them out”.

QOTD: Hmmm, That is a good question. Aside from straight memorization of regions and varietals, deciphering some labels, particularly French and German, can be a bit confusing (Identifying region, producer, vineyard, etc.).

  24. January 16, 2008

    BW

GV – Bring back the “sniffy-snif” – it is soooooo you

QOTD – Most confusing – Italy – so many varietals, so many regions – impossible to keep it all straight

  25. January 16, 2008

    Pete

I admit that I am one of those that thought red wines were better than whites, but now I think that I just need to try more. Inspired by a previous episode, I tried a riesling with a heavy dinner, and it was really good.

QOTD: I want to be able to expand my palate and pick out individual flavors. How are some ways to do that? Maybe you should do a show where you have us eat something and then try a wine and see the similarities. You could do that with a few of the flavors that are often in a certain varietals.
