I guarantee we will hear cat food, dutch cheese, and bone marrow as regular tasting notes from GV from now on. It’ll be subconscious, but he was so knocked out by Joanne’s descriptions that he has to run with them.

It was amazing to watch Joanne’s reactio to your intro! Had to watch it over.

No idea as to QOTD, but I forgive her. Very classy addition to the show and very enjoyable. I loved it when she started out reacting to Gary’s descriptions by saying “There is none of those flavors actually in there so what do you mean”! Then by the end she was doing some pretty good descriptors herself!

Portly port may make Guinness record book
Oakland Tribune, May 21, 2005 by Brian Foley, STAFF WRITER

CASTRO VALLEY — Would you like a brick of cheese with that bottle of wine?

The San Francisco Bay Wine Auction — tonight under the caves of Wente Vinyards in Livermore — will feature lots of wine, of course. But only one bottle was submitted to the Guinness World Records for review.

“I was talking to members of the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association and someone said, ‘That’s the biggest bottle of port I have ever seen,” said Bill Smyth, owner of Westover Winery on Palomares Road.

The 40-pound bottle contains over three gallons of 50-year-old port. The difference between port and other wine is the alcohol content. Port has added brandy.

“We added 168-proof brandy, so it’s a very sweet wine,” he said. “The association comes up with these big bottles, and puts wine in them. But no one has ever put port in them, which is a more expensive wine. This bottle is bigger than one of my dogs.”

It holds $960 worth of port, but the bottle itself makes the whole package worth more than $2,000.

When asked if someone would actually drink from an oversized bottle, Smyth said, “Oh yeah, definitely. These are real wine drinkers.”

The 11th annual wine auction is open to the general public at $50 a ticket. It will feature 100 different packages to bid on, and it is expected to raise as much as $300,000. The dinner will draw 370 people at $250 a plate.

“It’s a black-tie event,” Smyth said. “Some of the wealthiest of the wealthiest from the area will be there.”

gary, you need to bring her back. her british sass and wit jives well with your jerseyness. i mean that in the best possible way. i think the culturally savvy person with some wine knowledge but not jeffrey davies like can work well. i still think you fed her some lines like ‘burnt tire”, that or she did her homework. thumbs up.

champagne, in terms of france. outside of champagne, people drink “champagne” for special occasions. they drink cremant d’….. more often cause it doesn’t cost 30 euros. but more like 12. in champagne though, people drink champagne for almost every aperotif. maybe not on tuesday night alone, but surely when people come over.

    Rajiv A

Hey Gary, your show picked me up after a rather rough exam. I always look forward to weekday evenings!

When people ask you what’s up with the crazy references, I like your answer: “That’s what it smells like to me.” But when you have people who say stuff like: “Obviously the wine doesn’t have in it.” Maybe you should pull out the geek-speek:

Every wine has hundreds of different substances that give it its flavors and aromas, and they are all present in other materials/foods (Peynaud, Lichine). Our sense of smell works by our receptors recognizing substances at the molecular level, so if a wine smells like bananas, you can be sure that it has a molecule that is identical or very similar to the molecule that gives bananas their aroma.

    My thoughts on this show:

Gary, you always do a great job, no matter who the guest is, or how the wines are. That said, this show didn’t work for me. I felt like Joanne really got in the way of you doing your thing. I understand that it might be good to have a really inexperienced guest on, to connect with your viewers who are new to wine, or who are trying to introduce their friends to wine. Joanne, though, seemed less open to what you have to say because of her experience. Maybe it’s a European thing, but I felt like she has drunk wine most of her life and yet somehow not had an epiphany that turned her into a wine lover, so she assumes theres nothing more to wine. She just seemed a little disinterested and…how to put it…disrespectful? I think your approach really works for American non-winos, but European non-winos are a whole different cricket game – they have a certain ignorance+confidence mix that is puzzling to us wine-scared Americans. Also I’m not sure what she contributed as a Web 2.0-er.

I absolutely loved your guests like Jeffrey Davies and the somms, Andre Mack and others, and DK. I would like to see more of that. I felt a little uncomfortable in the earlier episodes when you had the winemakers on – I know you were still tasting from your own gut, but felt your need to be tactful about what you tasted.

In any case, lots of commenters seem to have liked her, so maybe it’s just me, but I really don’t think this is a direction I want to see WLTV go in.

I want to see more Davies! Maybe even Parker (ok that’s not so much of a WLTV episode, but a “see which wine god is left standing after the inevitable clash of titans” episode). In terms of connecting with newbies… you do that by yourself so well in each show with your mini-rants and references to how to build your palate and your reminders to trust our own palates.

    -Rajiv.

P.S. You could TOTALLY take Parker. Respectfully, of course.

Nice episode today! I was glad you put on the Finca Sandoval!!!! Although I haven’t had the ‘04, I love the ‘05. It was great to hear someone speaking French on the show, thanks Joanne. And how did Joanne ever get through living in France? It’s quite difficult to be a lightweight in Europe!

QOTD: Not quite sure what you asked dear.

  74. January 17, 2008

    Michael Harrison

My palate and descriptions all come from memory, its the most important part of describing wine. The corner of a dorm room? I hope you went to College, otherwise it must have been one hell of a party. That snickers bar, now that is a classic memory tool which you will NEVER forget.

  75. January 17, 2008

    Mandy

Hey Gary- Sounds like you have some fans that are a bit jealous of your guest. Why hate? Should guests be serious and pretend to be wine snobs? Why not just be honest and give your real reaction to wine. If you smell it and it makes you dizzy, that’s pretty funny, if not the “acceptable” thing to say.
I love it when you have co-hosts; it shows you are not afraid to shake things up a bit and stray from the usual routine. The best part about your show is the loose improve quality, and Joanne was definately keeping you on your toes!

  76. January 17, 2008

    Jahlove

I really have no idea what the QOTD was. But that Joanne sure is cute. I could talk to her all day. Lizzy’s gonna be a little jealous after watching this show because there was certainly some chemistry going on there. Great show. The guest shows always end up being my favorites, especially when the guests are as lovely and charming as Ms. Colan. Always a sucker for the accent. Here’s to more guests on the T-show in ‘08.

GV, I have to agree with Rajiv A. Todays show was fun and light but I really didn’t get alot from it. I sign on to learn about wine. Bring on guests that will be a little more serious.

  94. January 17, 2008

    lori

Isn’t it funny, just when you decide to lose the sniffy sniff (which i enjoy) you get someone on… that gets drunk just sniffing wine. Hmmm.

    She was great. Nice show.

  97. January 17, 2008

    Plminer

Great episode GV and Joanne! I like the theme here, some of these guests compliment Gary in a way that brings some regular wine folks to the table, makes us feel like we are there more.
QOTD: I have no frickin idea…a bunch of squabling kids.

  98. January 17, 2008

    RIck K

Looks like you have a cohost

  99. January 17, 2008

    KyleLikesTies

I’m have to largely agree with Rajiv A and Glenn and KarenP … I love the idea of guests (your father, for example, was fantastic), but the “Hehe, I’m drunk after sniffing it.” approach isn’t something I enjoy; in fact it’s rather irritating. I’d much rather see people who drink wine (at least semi-)regularly and can have fun without giggling the entire time.

    Now, to disagree with Rajiv A, I don’t think it’s a European thing. Besides that there are many Europeans who don’t drink wine at all (some areas, e.g., Sweden, parts of Germany, are much more beer-centred), I know many people who are ignorant and unafraid to admit it. Finally, although I didn’t particularly enjoy what Joanne brought to WLTV, I don’t know that I’d call her inexperienced given that she spent a good deal of time growing up and drinking wine in France … perhaps out-of-practice is a better word ;~}

  100. January 17, 2008

    David Dadekian

    QOTD: Tea

But seriously, that was interesting. I’m not sure it completely worked. The last half worked for me much more than the first. Joanne was a great guest, but I felt only 50% of the time (I’m sure she’s a great person 100% of the time, I mean 50% as a guest). Maybe wine-related guests work better in the format of the show? Though I’d watch a few more non-wine-related and see if it’s just me.

  101. January 17, 2008

A comely wench, but alas poor Vaynerchuk, methinks she is taller than you! Nice break from the routine — good to see a LADY grace the WLTV set. Need to brush up on my French and replay that early segment.

  104. January 17, 2008

Joanne was as sparkling as the last bottle. Thoroughly enjoyed her. Keep the guests coming, although they should probably be more than annual wine drinkers.

Great show Gary! I have been lurking for a while, and this wonderful episode has to make me say hello! Loved it, light, refreshing and a tad silly, as it should be! can’t wait for tomorrow’s! Thanks for keeping it real! Jim

Great show! You and Joanne make a very funny team.

  107. January 17, 2008

I love your new idea to bring on guests!! Joanne was very cool.

QOTD – I have no idea what color shirt, but i’ll bet it showed a hint of red fruit.

    Great show today!

  108. January 17, 2008

    Dominus

OK, I admit it, I’m in love. A gorgeous lady with a Brit accent who speaks French and is that much fun? Wow… Now I know why my GPS “voice” is a female Brit. Man o man.

QOTD: Guinness book of record re: wine? All of us Vayniacs have no clue but I’ll guess . . . German Riesling. Or maybe Champagne, my fav wine of choice.

    Great show G-Man!

    Cheers! (with a Brit accent)

    winelover4ever

Good interaction …..great to have guests more often. Although your wife is not going to like this king of sexy guests…..doesn’t matter if says its ok…women are women here, london, or russia….dispite of that I like the idea of showing everybody the idea of being more open at the time of tasting and evaluating a particular wine….spit it out …whatever you think, what ever you smell or taste… great show Gary….I did’t get the QOTD, But the Finca Sandoval wine I tasted from either 02 or 03 did not show the real stuff. Not much of a thunder…. and very fruit foward bomb….ok to drink but pricy for what i got…anyways keep the guests …and if they are sensual like joanne…. great

  110. January 17, 2008

    FJDR

The QOTD was “What is the current Guinness Book of Records wine-related…” The answer is 42. She has a very cute way of “whirling”; that girl knows how to whirl.

  111. January 17, 2008

    JC

A light episode, & quite extraordinary. QOTD: blue?

  112. January 17, 2008

    Harley Stan

Gary, that looked like alot of fun to tape, great episode today and a great guest !!!!
    QOTD- not sure

  113. January 17, 2008

    JoshL

Don’t wanna take anything away from certain novel thunderness that today’s show brought…enjoyed the interaction between you and the guest…yet, I don’t think it was as educational as your normal shows….the analysis of each wine wasn’t very coherent with all the laughter and jokes (which I did enjoy…don’t get me wrong). Definitely a type of episode that’ll allow you to keep things fresh…but I see how it could be detrimental if such an episode were the norm. I think it was a good idea that you selected the wines that don’t have any significant ties to one another (except that the lady mentioned she had certain propensity towards them)…which made the show a lighthearted one…I may have been pissed had it been some cool selection that I would’ve definitely wanted a more serious analysis on.

  114. January 17, 2008

    big_al

Great show. Joanne is obviously very comfortable behind the camera. She needs to come back to ask a proper QOTD. Cat Food???

Oh, and please more champagne, more blanc de blanc. It kills me. In a good way.

  118. January 17, 2008

    JoshL

Big Al, what’s wrong with giving my opinion of the show? I’m just as big a fan of the show as you may be…that’s what Gary inspires people to do…to trust our own judgement… Must I succumb to some sort of peer pressure you’re imposing on me because you think you’re so cool with your “dude” language?

  119. January 17, 2008

    Jerm

I was a lurker, but now I’m not. The million dollar bottle of wine didn’t do it for me, but this did. Shows where my priorities are at….

I like the idea of having non-professional wine drinkers on the show. I’m still new to the experience. Nice to see people of different wine pedigrees enjoying wine together….

There should be a list of “wines that take EXACTLY like _____”. The person who helped me get into wines always had me taste these “no brainer” types of wine, which gave me the confidence to come out and say things like “this wine tastes like old people”, which isn’t my highest compliment….

My answers to the previous QOTD, since this is my first post. I started listening (and lurking) after the (first) NPR story. Now where’s my million dollar bottle of wine?

  120. January 17, 2008

    GregO

I think Joanne should be invited back to a laid back Fri couch episode…forget the bucket. ;)

I’ve got a couple of the 04 Sandoval’s in the cellar…sounds like a winner, I’m just hoping with a bit of age they might show something other than dark fruit and alcohol.

  121. January 17, 2008

    yathink2

That was a lot of fun! Thanks

  122. January 17, 2008

    Huge Johnson

This was an episode that I felt could have, and has in the past worked better with wine related guests. I felt that the wine content in this particular episode was lacking. Some great selections, and the show itself was entertaining, however not the usual WLTV that we all know and love.

  123. January 17, 2008

    wm mole

Current Guiness Book of Records wine related…. births in one year? I don’t know, 14 million?

    Great show you guys!!!

Gary, This show was a blast, like a few good friends having a great laugh together. The guest gigs are 2 thumbs up! Bone Marrow and Cat Food, she’s now one of US!

Loved Joanne….I like the idea of guests…just normal people…not really wine “experts”…would love to see her again as a guest…but really want LIZZIE to make an appearance….Valentines Day is coming soon…come on Vanniacs…rise up…demand that Lizzie makes an appearance…

I liked the show, I thought Joanne was fun and easy-going, a breath of fresh air… After a hard day at work, it’s fun to watch a show that can make you laugh. Variety and spontaneity is a facet of the show that always make it great. I say, keep them comming!

  129. January 17, 2008

    Robert Howells

Gary, What a great guest you had on today. It was Rocketboom that started me watching video podcasts and I found WLTV along the way. Keep the guests coming.

  130. January 17, 2008

    Elliot Essman

I thought you coached the guests in the QOTD.

  131. January 17, 2008

    Christopher J

Great episode Joanne. You really make Gary hard to look at in comparison.

I loved the episode, I think you should have a talk show Gary, you are a great interviewer.

Smells like freshly opened RBI Baseball 2 for NES? Your spontaneity is priceless!

PS – I lean more towards a “Bases Loaded” kind of smell. (Jersey rocks the house with Paste and Bay in the 3 and 4 holes)

Great, great episode and great guest. Thank you, Joanne. I’m gonna have to check out this Rocketboom show since I’m not “in the know” about Internet buzz. It was really great to see Joanne exploring her palate and contributing so much. More guests! Good times. Really brightened my night up. Thanks again.

    Hey G,

Talk about banter – wow! Some good tidbits though – educational at moments, along with some ‘mysterious’ vibes throughout.

    qotd: huh???

qogv: (about Finca Sandoval) “This is very hedonistic.”

qojc: “I knew you were going to say that!”

    She’s got your number, man!

Great Show and so far an outstanding week we’re on track for what could be the best laid back friday ever and thats exciting! Don’t know if I’ve said it already but Eric Arnold’s book First Big Crush was stellar read on the plane and couldnt put it down!
QOTD Im just gonna say WLTV cause i didnt get what the question was.

  141. January 17, 2008

    Keith Brown

QOTD ????? LOL, a great show. Ironic that Rocket Boom was my first “vlog” as well. I came in post-Amanda, so I’ve only ever know Joanne as the host. She is one stunningly intelligent and attractive woman (notice I rated her mind first…). I have always been blown away with her wit and breadth of knowledge. And now she SKOOLED you boy! LOL, just kidding, but it sure was impressive the way she picked right up on the ways of the Thunder Show. Can’t wait until you get Keven and Alex on there. BTW, you’re probably gonna need some security for that one.

  142. January 17, 2008

    Keith Brown

    OK, I misspelled “Kevin”…and yeah…I’m a**l…

  143. January 17, 2008

There were so many thing about that episode that were great. Good job Gary, thanks for coming on Joanne! You’re going to be out of a job before you know it GV.

I’m totally converted… you definitely need to have more guests on the show.

  144. January 17, 2008

    Grape Expectations

That was a really fun episode. It was nice having dinner with Gary and Joanne. Can she come back again, sometime?
QOTD: Wait…wait…don’t tell me….uhh, what was the question again?

  145. January 17, 2008

    Scott

The next contest should be for a dinner with Gary and Joanne. Fun episode! Probably because it resembled how the rest of us drink wine: while having fun and good conversation with someone else.

  146. January 17, 2008

    Lev M

what a great show. very different format and lots of fun.

  147. January 17, 2008

Guess I’ll be the descenting opinion. While I love the Thundershow, today was one of the lower ranked ones for me. She seemed like a very nice women but it’s not what I watch WLTV for.

That was so funny. I laughed a lot. Someone should take Larry King out of his bent chair and put Gary in there with a few wine bottles. Ok, maybe add some licorice apple yeast cat food. Joanne rocks!

    GVNC,

Excellent show! Joanne showed something real there when people really don’t know their palettes but know what they do and don’t like. I love how she questioned all the vocab and within minutes was throwing out cat food. You liberated her from feeling stupid about what SHE smelled and tasted and made her feel free enough to be good with it. That’s what the Thunder Show does for people and that’s why you’re the best. Bring more guests! She was great.

    QOTD: dead air

  159. January 17, 2008

Gary, great show. Nice change of pace. I liked her; some people didn’t. So what – she is one of your peeps and that is what matters – it’s your show. Thanks again for the free content every day. People should be careful not to bite the hand that feeds them – for free nonetheless!

  166. January 18, 2008

    Chris D

I enjoyed the Euro perspective on wines availability and culture with the wine.
    - Enjoyed the show – a bit of flirting there GV, with Joanne getting woozing from just sniffing the wine ?

    QOTD – $4,300 dollars

    What was the QOTD?

  171. January 18, 2008

    Hotshot162

I think Gary got distracted throughout the show (understandably)… but overall still a wonderful show. Joanne brought a lot of energy and seem had a lot fun with Gary. We definitely need more guess on the show from now on.

QOTD: Umm…I hope I’m not the only one didn’t catch her question…

  172. January 18, 2008

    Charlie

Oh, and it was an awesome show. I like the occasional guest for a little variety and to spread the love of the thunder show. Great job Gary.

You have to have K Rose as a special guest. Loved the show today.

Jeez, what to say about the episode. That’s the crappy part about being in Japan and watching it after all the other dirty minded Vayniacs watch it. There’s nothing to be said. Coc…I mean Rockets coming out of Gary’s head, suction, spitting, rubber…this was a very very PG-13 rated episode. I actually watched with one eye covered. Oh you naughty naughty people.

  183. January 18, 2008

    Great episode. Kudos Joanne.

Gary, I don’t think this will be the wifey wife’s favorite…

My girl thinks it’s much better that I have the GREATEST PORN collection , so I can relieve those thoughts and never CHEAT!!! She is correct. In 6 years I have NEVER strayed!! So what, you were excited to drink wine with a cheap date. That’s not the worst. It could be soooooooooooooo much better though. PEACE BRO!!!!

  187. January 18, 2008

    Robert

dude, she was awesome. You have to invite her back sometime soon, seriously. I found it very interesting comparing what she tasted as an untrained wine taster versus you as a trained wine taster. I hope all your guests are this good. I do have one request though, you have to bring the diggnation dudes on. I seriously think that show would bring more thunder than this show. And that’s saying something.

  188. January 18, 2008

    medo

Big time show Gary! She was really cool! Wow…

QOTD: Yes! ah, or, maybe… Or not?!

Next time, if you find a wine interested Playmate : bring her on the show ;)

  189. January 18, 2008

You guys are so funny! All the sexual jokes – so witty! You guys might be looking up WAY too much internet porn. Do us a favor, PLEASE, and keep your fantasies to yourself. I might think she’s hot but I’m not going to sit here and post retarded comments on a wine blog. God, come up with something original, dorks.

  190. January 18, 2008

    paul

Very funny, very amusing ep. I’m not sure I’ve ever sensed cat food in a wine, but what the heck.

  191. January 18, 2008

    YoungDave

Solid ep, and that chic was charming and pleasant, but a bit of a lightweight for someone whose parents were serving her wine at the age of 6!
QOTD: Clearly the Guiness Book question was never completed, so if I am to answer the question she DID finish, Gary wore a black long-sleeve shirt on episode 1. Cheers.

  192. January 18, 2008

Way to go chicagochris! I agree. The half-witted sexual comments are something very un-WLTV.

    Ahh well.

This was a good ep for the CKC crowd drool-factor (obviously). Perhaps this ‘talk-show’ approach is nice though, but there are many fine ladies in the wine world that have something to say of interest to us people curious about that world.
QOTD: I wonder if Joanne knows how to use the Gary’s Scores spreadsheet to check out Gary’s shirt herself in ep 1 … somehow I DOUBT IT. As I doubt if she had watched s single ep of WLTV as she didn’t even know about QOTD! Shocking.

  203. January 18, 2008

Rajiv, yes, it’s just you. And people like you are the reason Gary does this show. Lighten up; you don’t have to analyze everything.

Bond chick, phallic symbol coming out of Gary’s head. Nielson ratings are probably skyrocketing, what’s next, G.V. announcing his candidacy with Bond chick? We all knew it would come to this. Fun show!

What more can be said. She speaks for herself. Nice looking, very whitty and very fun to watch. Great show Gary. You will need to ask her back.

Nice work with the guest Gary. It’s Lot’s of time line comments on this one!

    GalvezGuy

Great show, it looked like both of you were having a great time. And I think the Edam (a nutty flavored cheese) taste profile was right on.

  223. January 18, 2008

    Eric A.

Great show… definitely a much better-looking guest than I was. Is Giselle on next week?! ;)

  224. January 18, 2008

    Grapestompper (Dave)

Really hilarious! The timeline comments are killing me. Champagne/sparkling wine is great. I’ve actually been drinking it more often. Nothing expensive though. Chandon and stuff like that.

  225. January 18, 2008

    Fred Liu

Terminology help us understand the wine and each other better, while systematic approach help us to interpret the feelings and convey the pleasure to others as a reference…

I think wine is a great vehicle to explore the broad world, ourselves and the way itself in which we explore…and much much more.

Alway being true and encouraging, trying to get closer to the fact, sharing with us, caring about others, with love, and more; that is our Gary. Thank you, man, as always.:)

  226. January 18, 2008

    Markus

    Great show!! keep it coming

  227. January 18, 2008

    Mason

The Cat Food Episode!!!! It was great! Really enjoyed the guest and your interaction with her. Still can’t get over the great reference to cat food and dinosaur heads. Great stuff!

  228. January 18, 2008

    The Fanjestic

That was different. But fun! I like having cool guests that aren’t in the wine industry.

  229. January 18, 2008

    Willem

This was an awesome episode. More of these duets with this lady please! I love that she’s a Brit, I live in England, and this has definitely made a connection across the big pond to good old Europe. You two complement each other well with your knowledge and backgrounds. Keep it up!

  230. January 18, 2008

    Capt M

Try the Chateau Musar ‘99 from Lebanon. This wine must be decanted first. Do a show on wines that must be decanted. Great show this was, gorgeous lady, fun! I didn’t get the QOTD

  231. January 18, 2008

    Brian V

    She’s the best! Great show!

  232. January 18, 2008

I really enjoyed this episode! Very well done you two!

  233. January 18, 2008

Gary, that was an awesome episode! Joanne was great and not to bad on the eye’s either. Does she have a younger sister?

  234. January 18, 2008

    ArizonaBrian

Good fun show…I think I like the idea of an occasional Web2.0 guest…keep up the great work Gary!

  235. January 18, 2008

    Kirk

I don’t think I have ever seen a show with so many sexual inuendos comming from one person…she was a fun, fun guest and certainly brought the laughter. Cat food and the guiness book of world records. Awsome….
QOTD: Confusing as hell….I’ll let somone else google it.

  236. January 18, 2008

    Wade

GV, you should have done a food pairing episode with her, marmite and toast, Branston pickle and cheese sandwiches, or even stewed eel in a lunch pail, etc.

And GV, you’re becoming a dangerous man, promoting the daredevil life, exposing American Vayniacs to the rarefied child rearing practices of foreigners. Some poor naive Vanyiac is going to give his kid some spring water with a few drops of wine and before he knows it some other paterfamilias from the block will be calling in the incident to the authorities.

Probably the funniest episode of WLTV ever!
Joanne Rocks, loved her British accent, speaking French, and the
cat food and bone marrow comments.

    MrJCG1

First time poster, long time lurker here. Great episode. Beautiful lady and it really works when you have someone with a bit less of a defined palette than yourself. It gives us newbies someone to relate to. Kudos!!!

  240. January 18, 2008

    Aron Kramer

What a show. Also, as a new fan, not sure if others felt this way as well, 230 some comments are a lot to read, I LOVED the rehash of the whole taste and smell thing and how you “see” all the different things in the wine once you get past the alcohol. Watching Joanne bring the thunder made me want to get out there and give the whole thing a try as well! Thanks a ton!

  241. January 18, 2008

    L

I’m obviously in the minority here, but i thought your guest was awful. She apparently never drinks wine, nor does she seem to enjoy it very much. More importantly, i have trouble understanding how anyone could be unable to ask a simple opinion generating question impromtu…. Wow, she said a wine smelled like catfood and everyone was blown away like this was the most imaginative and profound comment ever made. I guess that I fail to see how this was such a laudable accomplishment for a person equipted with a memory, olfactory senses, and a vocabulary. Maybe i’m being too negative, or perchance i sniffed a few too many glasses of wine and lost m’head!

  242. January 18, 2008

    MrJCG1

    L,

I liked her for exactly the reasons you disliked her. There really was no need to point out her shortcomings. She represents a large portion of us who know very little about wines and are watching these vids to learn. Some of us are not yet as refined as you. Besides, Gary was there to counter-balance her. I think I would be bored watching Gary with another wine aficionado. She was fun, peppy, different, and pretty to boot. What’s there to complain about?

  243. January 18, 2008

    Zinny

I am also in the minority that felt today’s guest wasn’t really that awesome. I won’t comment on her looks because I am above that.

Basically I felt that she was OK .. but she’s really not that into wine and her “style” – kind of wordy and understated – didn’t mesh well, in my opinion, with your more up-front, less subtle approach. I kind of felt myself wanting to fast forward through her very long descriptions of how it is in France.

Personally . .I would like to see you NOT get more Web 2.0 guests . . but instead get experts and guests from the wine world or at the very least guests who are famous for other things but at least like and drink wine.

  244. January 18, 2008

    MARKSHARKY

I thought she brought a fresh funny perspective to WLTV and really enjoyed the episode. Wine is and should be fun when consumed life has too many serious sides to it. Drink wine and be happy..

  245. January 18, 2008

    Lynette Sullivan

    Great Show!

  246. January 18, 2008

  248. January 18, 2008

    DavidB

OK, first off the show was great. There was some good information on the wines tasted along with some fun banter between the two. Why can WLTV not have a guest who does not have a load of wine experiance, it gives us a little more incite into what the avarege “joe” or “jolien” thinks about a wine and that can not be bad. Would those that did not like this ep prefer to have a load of stiffs on the show? Talk about freaking boring Speaking of Jolien, can you get the “Jolien” on the show?

Geez Louise. What a great show. Rarely do I laugh out loud when watching (any) show, but caught myself on a couple of occasions. Very entertaining. The fact that Joanne isn’t much of a drinker didn’t, (for me), distract from the message. In fact, many people are not into wine, but they can still enjoy the experience, and some of her comments were apparently spot on. Top 20 stuff here.

  251. January 18, 2008

    boegemann

Entertaining show, good wine choices, beautiful and witty guest. I suggest inviting her back so we can see how her palette develops.

QOTD: The highest price paid for any bottle has been 105,000 British Pounds ($157,000 US) for a 1787 Chateau Lafite claret sold to Christopher Forbes (USA) at Christie’s London on December 5, 1985. The price was affected insofar as the bottle was initialed by Thomas Jefferson (1743 1826), 3rd President of the United States! –Guiness Book of World Records

  252. January 18, 2008

    Matt

Laugh out loud funny is right! Two witty people from different worlds coming together to share the experience of wine with the rest of us…forgive me folks but for me this is what this show is about! I am the expert of my own palate – I don’t need wine “experts” putting me to sleep.
    Great show GV!

  253. January 18, 2008

    Mike

Fun episode. She showed me I am not the only one that has a blind palate.

    Big Nick

Gary…really really like the show. Nice to see you merge two worlds and enjoy some wine. One comment though…if you are going to invite guests let them see an episode or two first so they know the format. It was nice to see you eplain to someone else how a wine tastes, smells, and feels. You tell us all the time, but to see someone experience it was nice.

Rick C.E. has been listening to too much Howard Stern. “Emotional Friend”…LOL. BTW: My wife would kill me too. They don’t understand it’s possible for a man to have a purely innocent conversation with a lovely lady. (They’re probably right).

    Attention all:

Gary couldn’t do the laid back Friday episode because he’s still trying to get his wife’s foot dislodged after yesterdays episode. Sorry.

I havent enjoyed the thunder show as I did with guest Joanne in a very long time. Very fun. Not so focused on the wine, but who cares. SOMEtimes, the thunder show goes beyond wine, and that’s why it’s so special.

  278. January 19, 2008

What is your favorite wine to get lit on?

    Answer: Any wine.

Anywho, good episode. I watched Rocketboom…it’s kinda random and incoherent. I’ll stick with WLTV!

Loved when she challenged you on the taste descriptors and then how she let her imagination go and came up with some beauties!!!

Dancing around the edge…..”oh, you have some wine on your forehead”, “I heard that it was good for the skin”………oh my!

Loved the show and I think that Joanne really helped you bring home a few points and was a very good guest! Plus it was fun to see you squirm a little…:)

I will definately check out Rocketboom!

Fun episode Gary. Like the little mix up to the daily show.

  295. January 19, 2008

Joanne is gorgeous, have got to admit. Gary is probably sore from a beaten, I agree. Gary, do the Chateau Musar ‘99 this week. Wines that must be decanted.

  296. January 19, 2008

    Justin Viger

I like the episodes that have guest on them. But judging from some of the comments left, it seems that some people can’t handle having female guests. Although I guess she would have to deal with the same things from her own podcast.

  297. January 19, 2008

    IPv6Freely

I love the guest shows, especially the non-wine pros because it really gives a new perspective.

Also interesting that they allow children to have wine in Europe, as we also do that in Canada. And that there are wine shops inside of supermarkets, as with Canada.

She’s very spunky, funny, with a lovely accent and extremely pretty. I am definitely going to check out her v-blog, if she’s anything on her show like she was on WLTV, I will definitely be checking out her show!

Thanks Gary, love the guest episodes!

  298. January 19, 2008

That was a hilarious episode! Kudos to Joanne for being such an awesome guest.

  299. January 19, 2008

good show like the energy of Gary bouncing the wine knowledge off a person with less knowledge but similar passion for the vino…and she learned quickly.

  302. January 19, 2008

    Scott the ex wine dude

Joanne is amazing, please have her back on the show.

I agree completely when it comes to drinking wines at room temp – except for sparklies. They need a bit of a chill on them (not too much!)to show well.

I am in the middle on this. Didn’t like the guest all that much, but it was still a good show. I do agree that I don’t really need a bunch of stiff wine greeks on the show as guest all the time. For those of you puttin’ all negitivity out on this episode, get over it. Come on it is a daily blog, there will be plenty of times to have the stiffs and such on. Part of this is all about having fun too!!

  309. January 20, 2008

    Erik Klumpp

I think you have found your new cohost. The interplay was fantastic, she just about killed me with that pedagogic line. Great episode, and as for the QOTD, no idea, but I greatly enjoyed it anyways.

This was the BEST show yet Gary, so much energy, you guys killed me!!!

Not exactly sure what the QOTD was (?)

Joanne was great and I think she helped you say what you’ve always been saying… wine with friends and an open mind ftw. This was exactly why I watch WLTV. Next we need the Diggnation boys and the wine with the mice in it! please. for me.

    Gary,
One of your best today! I’m with you, cold hides flaws! Go winery tasting, taste perfectly chilled whites, then get them home and…. somehow its not the same wine! Keep knocking the wine snobs SIDEWAYS (pun intended). Get her more often… the show certainly benifits from a beautiful young lady beside you! (and I love her english accent!)

I enjoyed the episode very much (even at 28 mins – yikes!) However, I did not enjoy Koolbooy’s (et. al.) rude and salacious comments below the picture (I don’t really care for that feature anyway.) Crass commenting may be a part of cyber-culture but it’s hardly “kool.” Hats off to Mikemc and Hewins for stepping up and calling Koolbooy on it.

This was a very entertaining episode and really seemed to polarize the audience. In response to comments on both ends of the spectrum: Lighten up and don’t be so rude. Keep the guests coming, but not every episode. Keep us guessing.

Nice change of pace. How did you ever manage to get the wine tasting in? Joanne is a cute girl, fabulous personality and kept us entertained for 28, that’s right, 28 minutes. You’d normally have to give away free stuff to keep us glued to the show for that long.

Gary and Joanne, Really great show! sorry that I am a few days behind, but your on-screen chemistry was great! Somebody mentioned a morning show with wine. . .I don’t think that’s too far off. Joanne, thank you for coming, you were a real pleasure. Gary, I agree that it’s a great idea to engage non-wine internet personalities. . .maybe some vice versa?

    Cheers!

Great show! Joanne has a great sense of humor!
I would have preferred to see more of her – seeing from the mid-riff up leaves so much to the imagination.

She never finished her QOTD. What is my Guinness Book World Of Records related to wine (?).

I guess that I will give one of my favorite wines that I have ever drank. I would say that a wine tasting that I had in Puligny Montrachet where I was at a lunch tasting and drank some phenomenal whites, including a Corton Charlemagne grand Cru (I grabbed a rock from the Le Montrachet vineyard).

Thanks for friending me up! My 18 year old daughter thinks it is a bit weird that her dad has a facebook account.

I loved this episode! A strong female that’s not afraid to say she doesn’t know much about wine, on a wine show, I loved it! Can’t wait to see more guests.

CLASSIC WLTV. This is the goods right here, the meat and bones of it all. This is the episode you show friends when you want to get them hooked. I could ramble for donkeys but I have 200 plus more episodes to watch to catch up. QOTD: There was none that I could make out so I’ll just go with “Monty Python is genius.”

This is great stuff, although im really new to this wine stuff but great job on making the show really informative and entertaining, gary. and joanne is so lovely, amazing personality, honest, fun and witty. I’m sure people will be thrilled to have her back on your show sometime in the future.

Visited because it is a “Joanne-link” and enjoyed watching her get a little tipsy. Simply love Joanne Colan and Rocketboom.

I’m glad I visited–my first visit. If Gary’s other programs are this interesting and informative, this will become a must-visit site on a regular basis–enjoy his enthusiasm and love of wines. Let me guess; it is no longer active. I’ll find out soon enough with future visits.

Thanks Gary. And thank you, Joanne.

Wow, this is one of my favorite episodes so far. The chemistry between Gary and Joanne was phenomenal. My favorite portion was near the end when they got into a “smell off” and Gary mentioned ” RBI BASEBALL 2 FRESHLY OPENED FROM A NINTENDO PACKAGE” that cracked me up, great content for sure.

I know this is pretty late to be commenting on this episode, but screw it, I’m a developing Vayniak and I’m ripping through the archives.

QOTD: Joanne didn’t get it, she’s sorry!
