    Two years after ...... i wake up.come Dom ....
Anyway, my best petit Verdot i ever try are Two ...
Cuvée Moisin 2006 of Chateau Moutte Blanc Bordeaux Superieur (very close Margaux) absolutly amazing, The best petit verdot products in Bordeaux (the owner made just 3 barrils of 100 % PV)A colour just how !!
The Second is Papin 2007 from chateau Mirambeau Papin Bordeaux Superieur (North of Bordeaux) véry véry good, he add 10% of merlot .
Both owner are the only two made 100% eptit verdot in Bordeaux, so so so passionned winemakers!!!!
If some body read me after 2 years, gimme a sign.
A useless comment of ME, that's very very fun to write something who's nobody read.
  • The best Verdot I ever tasted was out of the barrel at Hanna in Alexander Valley. Purple, plush and ripe. That's rare for this grape, but Murphy Goode and Rancho Sisquoc get close also.
  • Kell Brigan
A petit verdot varietal was the first ever "real" wine I had, and it was love. (Trinchero 2001 -- great complexity. Still tasting the finish.) I haven't tried any others because I see it so rarely, but I definitely keep a look out. (And, now I'm going to watch for cab francs...) I'm also always on the watch for dry, green whites. Sauv. blancs, of course, but they're so hard to do well, especially here in Zin country. I need to learn more about Alsace wines.)(Actually, I need to learn more about everything.)

P.S. How cool is your mom!
  • 2005 Casale del Giglio Petit Verdot Lazio IGT
    showing very nicely right now

QOTD: I havent had one yet, and I was waiting for you to tell me to have one ( you know, being a sheep and all ;) ).

I first heard of petit verdot this year from Wine Library TV. The first one I had was about a month ago and it was the rosé you tasted on this episode. I wasn’t real big on it. I suspected it was because it was a rosé which I’m not real used to. As I rewatch this episode I’m having my second petit verdot. It’s my first red PV and the first bottle from Wine Library that I’ve ever had. I made an automobile-pilgrimage to WL a little over a month ago. It’s a 2005 Casale de Gigio. My first impression isn’t real good. It has a funny taste that’s strangely familiar. I think the rosé had this taste too which suggests to me that PV isn’t my thing. I’m going to finish this comment after I let it breath for a couple more hours.

No I don’t like it. Both PVs I’ve had are giving me some sort of bad association—medicine or something sick related. I don’t like it. I know one or two are not enough to pass permanent judgment on a varietal but I think it’s going to be a while before I go out of my way again to get a PV, especially since I usually like (to varying degrees) almost every red wine I try.
  • Rob P
Gary...just tried my first PV and it was great. What an amazing value as well. It was the 2003 Hanging Rock PV at only $8.
  • Hang in there folks......an affordable Petit Verdot varietal is on it's way.....hard times for my winery has forced my to make my own from the Petit Verdot we grow --- That is the ONLY variety we grow and we are very UP on it and feel it has super potential......

However, the price needs to be a little higher because of the late maturity and the potential in cooler years that there is no crop! We intend to market it as 'The Merlot Verdot'TM and 'The Cab Verdot' TM. Visit www.nearsierra.com to get the 'scoop' on this variety in California and it's potential for great things to come.......Thanks, Gary, for talking it up!!

  • Watched this episode a while back and forgot to comment.

QOTD: Nope! Getting around to it. Need a loan to pay expenses before I can buy more wine :(
  • “Petit Verdot”.. tried not.. but the man is gud. will try for him.
  • Ian
QOD: Pirramimma Petit Verdot 2002,03,04 (Australia, Excellent!) and Santa Carolina Barrica Selection Petit Verdot 2004 (Chile, just 'okay').

    Cheers,

    - Ian
  • Zoinks! What am I waiting for? Free shipping!
  • Hmm I'll have to try one of these!
  • GR8wine
Yep, I'm a big PV fan. I've had 2 of the 3 wines you tasted (Pearmund and MG). Too bad Chris didn't send you an earlier vintage of the Pearmund, they were better than the still new '06 but I agree with your assessments. BTW - how long was the wine opened? I noticed the Pearmund fruit evolved significantly after being opened (for the better).
Best one I've ever had was '04 Vina Alicia Cuarzo from Lujan de Cuyo. It's only 90% PV with the rest Grenache and Carignane but it's awesome -- You Gotta seek it out!
  • Keith Brown
This is TOO funny. I don't even know if I've ever seen a PV varietal wine around here, even at the liquor store. I walk into my local grocery today (and I do mean local, this is not a chain store) and they've got a rack of 2001 Pirramimma PV clearance priced at $10! Reviews on Cork'd don't sound too bad. Well of course I picked one up. Gary, are you messing with me??
  • I've never had one... I'm not waiting for anything other than a serious recommendation from you for a wine at a reasonable price. Frankly at this point my biggest problem is I don't have a wine cellar and I swing the several thousands it would take for one. Since these things have the tanins you're talking about I'd need to cellar them in my nonexistant cellar...
  • Keith Brown
QOTD: Nope, never had one, that I know of anyway. I guess I'll wait for the price to get a little more reasonable (i.e. more competition), but hopefully before they become milquetoast like most Cabs have.
  • Tommy Vernieri
I've had the 2003 Ballast Stone (from WL) and the 2004 Esoterica from Kent Rasmussen (from Wine.Woot). The Ballast Stone was awesome, Christmas spices and cranberry. The Esoterica was not good; it had no fruit, it was all thick, thick tannins. I tried it after one, two, and three nights and while it did smooth out it was still not palatable to me.

I wish I could get some more bottles of that Ballast Stone though.
  • Jack
Love the Murphy Goode Petit Verdot. It is not $23 but more like $35-$40 and worth every penny. If you want to try Petit Verdot start with the best, which is Murphy Goode. If you can find a bottle of the 2002 PV it is awesome and will turn you into a diehard Petit Verdot fan
  • Ryan
QOTD: picked one up from whole foods last week, it was okay, but I am not sure it brought the 8 dollars of thunder that I paid for it... Can't think of a PV that has excited me. I guess I haven't had many recently
  • jaybaer
I agree with some others about Pirramimma. I really like their stuff. Nice Shiraz in addition to my favorite P.V.

I also really like the 2003 Callaghan (AZ) PV made from California fruit.
  • QOTD: PIRRAMIMMA PV 2001 bought 6 @ 3years ago ,save them for the aged steaks!
  • Dan-o
Never had a straight up PV, although I will look for one in the future.
I am a Bordeaux first wine-o, therefore I am sure it will rock!
  • Vinacull
Good meat 'n potatoes Ep Gary. QOTD: Yes, don't remember (shame on me), and it's time to refresh my memory with a nice PV ;-)
  • Paul M
    QOTD:
    1 - No
    2 - n/a
    3 - not sure
  • Achilleas in Cyprus
    Nope, never had it.
Will ask my favourite wine shop here if they have any and give it a whirl.
  • Big Nick
Never had P.V. But now that I know what to expect I will be looking for some next time I head to the store. We only get limited things here so I will have to look and see what they have in stock. I would not mind tasting the Murphy Goode.
  • NADINE ANTOUN
In all honesty I don't recall if I did or if I didn't but next time I am at the S.A.Q. (where we have liquor here in Quebec), I will definitely look into Petite Verdot, I am such a good student, keep it up !

    :)
  • Jayhitek
QOTD: Never tried it. But would like to. Maybe this weekend.
  • Josh in Burgundy
QOTD: I had a straight PV at a private tasting up in the Rockpile AVA just above the Drycreek valley. It was amazing the only problem was it was just the winemakers bottling, the rest of it was going into there blend. Which is too basd because our whole group would have bought bottles if they were available. But right now it is kind of hard to find straight PV in Burgundy
  • John M
Best PV is the one I made from a kit.
  • HipandKneeDoc
    Wacky,

He shows an apple product at the end, and this is the one episode that I can't get on my Ipod...
  • Andy
Have had the Trinchero, which was nice, but I don't think I'd ever pay the $30 or so it goes for around here. Supposedly it was like $17-18 just a year or two ago. Maybe then.
  • Scott F
QOTD: No. And I don't know why. Hard to come by in Ohio. Guess I need to look harder.
  • Derek
Sorry gary never had PV, but I will!!!
  • Chandler
Haven't had petit verdot yet... Will seek out as soon as possible.
  • stewart l
Can't remember if I have ever had a petit verdot before. will have to look and see if any PA (HA!) wine stores have any.
  • 1 - yes
2 - Geyser Peak Reserve PV
    3 - Don't wait...always try something new!

Thanks GV for the GREAT reviews!!!
  • donf
    Today I stop lurking!

Had some good Ballast Stone and great Pirramimma PV from Oz. Also, Sandhill Small Lots out of BC. As a translpant from Vancouver to NJ I am loving your store and prices. Gary, if you want to taste some wine from BC let me know as I have brought a stash with me.
  • Stevo
Had a PV. Calamity. Will pick up more.

watching at work during lunch...closed door of course and I always mute your intros at work!
