Do you know I run a pickle company in chicago? (The Puckered Pickle Company) It kills me every time you mention pickles. Awsome!!

Last inpressionable PV for me Marquis de Grinon ( i think they might be owned by LVMH) Killer Stuff from Spain.

    QOTD:

    1. No I have not.
    2. N/A
    3. To run into one in a wine shop (or maybe even just go to a wine shop) or bar. My friend has a bodega in Ribera del Duero and is always bringing stuff over (his wine or something he´s trying for his masters usually), so unless I pick something up at the grocer´s, I honestly don´t buy a lot of wine to drink at home. True story.

Nice show today GV! It was short but packed with the good stuff we all love :) Ya know based on your descriptions today I’m really anxious to try a straight up PV now lol

QOTD: Nope never had PV on it’s own. What am I waiting for you ask! Well… there’s SO many varietals to try man I just haven’t gotten to that one yet. Limited by time and money, usually the later lol I’ve only had it when it’s been used in a blend.

Hey GV, QOTD I recently had a 2000 Murphy Goode PV. That’s why I was interested in your tasting it today. The 2000 was very different to my taste. it was huge on the vegetables… here are some comments I had at the time:
brussel sprouts, broccoli, tomatoes, a real garden salad… underlying hints of raspberry jam here and there… nice long finish – V8 Juice – Soooo, my question to you is do you often see the same wine from the same producer vary in profile so much from vintage to vintage (since today’s tasting you had of the ‘04 was heavy on the fruit)?………..

QOTD: Serge Laville, the winemaker at Spring Valley Vineyards in Washington, poured me a glass of petit verdot that he had made as an experiment. Delicious! But that’s the only pure petit verdot I can recall tasting. Serge normally uses the varietal in his marvelous Uriah and Frederick blends.

I have had and don’t remember much about it. I think the last one or two I’ve had are Pirramimma PV and Marques de Grinon PV. It’s been awhile. What I remember, I like. Thanks for the great lessons.

QOTD:Not yet. I’ve only seen one Petit Verdot from Australia in my most visited wine shops.

I’ve been always wondering how we can distinguish one grape from another in a blind tasting, while even just one grape can express his/herself in so many ways…Still trying to get the clue….

Actually had the Pearmund during an ill-conceived trip to a couple of VA wineries. VA wineries on the whole need another decade or two. The Pearmund Petit Verdot was unmemorable. We couldn’t wait to get home and have a real bottle of wine.

QOTD: I have had one 100% PV, De Bortoli Vat 4 Petit Verdot from Australia. Inexpensive, but pretty good. Definitely some pickles on the nose, but I would guess not the full veg like the Pearmund, there is still some fruit in there.

And I cannot believe i spelled “two” as “too”, I just cannot see how I did that, i am so embarrased and know the whole world is looking down at me now. Thanks again for the show, no better way to spend 20 minutes at the computer.

Great episode GV, i still can’t tell weather you have given your real reaction to who is playing in the super bowl, but no hurry i guess… its too weeks away still. with how much you despise the Pats i know your rooting for the G-men… or are you??? i’d love to here your rant. BTW, awesome learning about the PV. hey so the apple tv lets you watch the Thunder Show on tv through i-tunes? what are you hinting at GV? what could you have in store? give away time i sense?

QOTD.have not had a straght PV, sounds like a good idea though, as soon as i see one one for around 15 i will be there all day long.

QOTD: Never had a 100% petit verdot, but I’ve always enjoyed Bordeaux blends or Argentinian or Cali Meritages that have the SENSE to put a solid 6%+ of this varietal in there. Other than that, I’m waiting to find one for $12. When I see it, I’ll close the deal.

    Petit Verdot…… Never had it!

Will give it a try; next visit to Yankee Spirits in Sturbridge,Ma.
Best assortment of wine in central Massachusetts!

You made your mothers’ day ! Good man Gary!

QOTD nope, I don’t have a good reason. Maybe that will be my super bowl wine.

Yeah, love the PV but for the life of me I can’t remember which ones I really like. My memory is kinda crap like that if I don’t write it down and I don’t find any notes for great PV in my tasting records.

That there Petit Verdot is awfully hard to come by in Hawaii…so, no, but I’m going to special order one for sure. Are there any others you can reccomend besides the Murphy-Goode?

Gary — recently started watching (scouring the internet for TV replacements occupies much of my time as I am overseas for a couple of years)… Best petit verdot I’ve had is a 2003(?) PV from Linden vineyards in Virginia. A fair amount of the greenness, with lots of dill, thyme, and oregano, but good structure and mouthfeel (not terribly common in VA) and, IIRC, a fair amount of ripe-ish fruit.

In #325, you reviewed a few shady VA chards, and I’d second the comment someone made about seeking out the Linden Hardscrabble.

Qotd – Not had it, none, ’cause it sounds sissy! it should be called Punisher Verdot or Power Verdot. With a last name like Verdot you gotta start strong. Like if your name was Petite Vaynerchuck well…I guess that would be a bit sissy. Gary Verdot… Still sissy. A big name problem.

Petite Sirah same issues! What is it with Petite? Where are you going to drink it except at home? Nascar tailgater? I don’t think so! Football party? I wouldn’t advise it. Better get some Tait “The Ball Buster” if you are going to win over any wine converts at the WWE Cage Match PPV party.

In summary I will try it, but only at home, out of a paper bag.

QOTD: Like Barolo, PV is another wine where I love the descriptions and tasting notes that I have read, yet haven’t gotten around to trying. Maybe it’s time to just pull the trigger.

  23. January 23, 2008

Had about 3-5 straight PV’s.. and the best was the 200x Pirramimma PV from Oz.

  24. January 23, 2008

QOTD: No, I do not recall having had a strait PV. My reason…It’s not available in my state. Maine requires distributors to bring a wine into the state…and we just don’t have one here yet. Ok, ok…that is a total cop out. I had the oportunity to buy one while I was out in Sacramento last month. I opted to buy the 2005 Domaine Serene Coeur Blanc (a white wine made from Pinot Noir) in the place of the Petit Verdot. Which ironicly was the Murphy Goode. Great show…Any chance we can get a show of say some 2002 Oregon Pinot Noirs on? It was (by most accounts) one of the best vintages Oregon has ever seen. it would be great to see how some of the producers wines have held up….or not.

I have not had a Petit Verdot but I guess its time I try to seek some out. I admit I am still intimidated by the wine shops as I feel I have so much more to learn.
