Show is up late tonight. Did you catch the article in the Star Ledger about corks versus screwcaps? It implied that Plumbjack, a Napa Valley winery, started the screwcap craze. Is this true? Friday question- – where did screwcaps get started?

392 and counting – Seven more Episodes? Is that what I heard????? Say it ain’t so GV there’s so much more to explore – hopefully you’re just playing with us………..then of course there’s always Rocketboom…..

7 more shows? I hope there are more than that! Two interesting wines and a good experiment. QOTD — too many to go into

    only 7 more episodes? a tear wells…

QOTD:I love to share awesome food, wine, scotch, music… with friends after a really long period of work. Celebration I think they call it.

    David Dadekian

QOTD: Love to do? Jeez, that’s a lot. I’m going to go with one word that means a lot of things to me (and maybe others). Music.

Gary, that was a phenomenal show. Thank you!

  24. January 23, 2008

    Danny

Double comment after I watched it. 7 more shows?!?! Say it isn’t so! What about the Vayniac wine project?!??! :( I just… Why I would just be heart broken :( There is a severe lack of good people on this planet Gary, and I couldn’t stand it if you stopped. The thought of it is making me sad.

  25. January 23, 2008

    Tgatesman

7 more all time, huh…we’ll see about that!

harder cherries are the way to go

  26. January 23, 2008

    Kristen

Ah! 7 more shows!!!!!!!! No please GV, how would I know what new grapes to try??? Your week on vacation was hard enough! :(

QOTD: I like to drink wine.

And I like medium ripe cherries.

  27. January 23, 2008

    David M Roberts

First, enough with the 7 more episodes. Just cut it out. The Vayniacs won’t hear it, and neither would we accept it. More, I don’t think you could go a week without taping a show.

That said, great installment today; appreciate your philosphy on wine, life, the whole bit.

QOTD: I have many favorite things, all outside of work. Just being home is one (as I am now, with wine glass in hand, watching the show). On topic, another favorite thing is to share really good wine with friends. Last week I treated some pals to a great bottle of Penley Estates reserve shiraz. The fact that they appreciated it as much as they did was repayment enough. I venture that you feel the same way every time you tape an episode of WLTV. It’s all about the sharing and giving.

  28. January 23, 2008

    TROC

7 more shows? That sucks! Rethink that, please. This is the kind of show I love, 2 very expensive wines and a brutally honest opinion. Looking forward to tommorrow’s tasting. Please rethink about quitting this show.

  29. January 23, 2008

    Tom L

QOTD: I luv 2 watch WLTV! Regarding the Star Ledger article, see page 38 of today’s paper. Here’s a question for you. Why does the Star Ledger use “The Nose” when they could use Mr. Sniffy-Sniff?

Great show!!!, I hope you meant only seven more shows this month which means a bonus Saturday show. As far as trying new things and all that stuff just check out my cork’d profile wine cellar, there is a little bit of everything in it. I now look for something new each time I shop and normally buy two bottles of each at a time so I have one to sip and one to sit just to see what happens.
QOTD- Besides watching WLTV and wine, I like road trips, short or long.

  33. January 23, 2008

    chenrys

7 more shows???? Say that isn’t so.

QOTD: Lots of things. I like to skate, do artwork and hang out with Carl. He likes to fish, take pictures and play music.

  34. January 23, 2008

    Mikie C

Whao! Ya gotta get to quinientos at least, GV!

Hey, I must say there was new energy in the new venue. You brought the thunder tonight! Thanks, it was a dynamite ep. Many more to go, I hope =-)

  35. January 23, 2008

Great episode Gary. I alway enjoyed having a bottle of Burgundy over a 5 hour period. Its one of the most sensuous pleasures, experiencing a well done Red Burgundy evolve over time. I am always amazed. When I have one of those evenings with friends I realize why I became, as the french say, an “amateur.” A lover of wine.

I am looking forward to see how the wines you picked evolve. However, wouldn’t it be more instructive showing, perhaps in a time lapse, how the wine evolves every couple of hours?

  36. January 23, 2008

love to drink wine, root for the Dodgers, and make and eat BBQ.

    I really liked this show.

QOTD: I love to whitewater canoe. I love to play guitar. I love to LEARN about everything I can get my hands on.

  38. January 23, 2008

    Little Johnny H

What a fantastic show. I’ve been waiting for you (GV) to do a set of shows where the wines air out over the course of a day. Like you said, when I drink wine, it’s usually over the course of 24 hours and I’m excited to see how these pricey wines hold up (especially the bomb). However, with just seven more episodes left (really?) you’ve got a lot more ground to cover…

QOTD: Anything outside -no matter the weather or season. Of course, drinking wine is the exception…

  39. January 23, 2008

    Kev and Ams

QOTD: I love to watch WLTV. I’m going to enjoy the hell out of the next (last) 7 episodes.

I was going towrite something else but that hits it on the head!
I have a 5 month old daughter and now she’s crying! Thanks Gary, threatening to leave the Thunder Show and let it die has made my 5 month old beautiful baby girl cry! Now are you happY? ;)

Good show, laid back and honest – over 20 minutes – this would be the perfect episode if just one more wine was tasted. 3 is the magic #.

    One last dig:
Gary you’re giving it up? What are you – the Jets?
    ;0 Oh Snap!

  41. January 23, 2008

    John Blue Label

Great Show GV. Would love to try the Torbreck one day. Their Woodcutters Shiraz, which flies in less rarified air, is pretty darn good for the price (20 bones).

Hey, really? Only 7 more shows? What gives?

  42. January 23, 2008

    Rajiv A

QOTD: Be with people I love. Play music. Play music with people I love.

You’ve GOT to be kidding about 7 more shows. If there are only seven, can each one be 5 hours long?

  43. January 23, 2008

    Nathan

I’d be rather disappointed if now that I am home from Iraq and can actually try some of these wines, you decided to up and quit your show. I love the more modern approach brought to your show. I am even getting the wife into it and she, as of yet, doesn’t care for wine.

  44. January 23, 2008

    Chippewamike

Redunkulous! Have not heard that since Mike and Mike.

QOTD: Love to play golf! (Learning about wine a close second).

7 more shows? Is that before the end of the month?

    Great show!

  45. January 23, 2008

    Dan WI

Gary – From the heart , you are the BOMB, QOTD – what I love to do is watch WLTV and mountain bike. Please talk about the upcoming Vayniac get together in NJ in March . Even though we can’t order from you here in WI (depressed Packer fan)we’d love to vacation (big $ deal!) spending time in NJ/NY to meet you. I love your personality/enthusiasm. What else? Not sure , the Malbecs I’m drinking tonight are affecting my judgement. Go PACK, GO J-E-T-S, Superbowl matchup 2009 or beyond? Peace to you truly, DB

Hey, don’t go pulling an Everybody Loves Raymond on us. Stick around and see where this all goes. Maybe you’ll be the Internets number one show, period, after awhile. I sure have liked you more than those diggnation guys for months now.

    WTF 7 more shows??
QOTD … I like to watch you taste wine and tell me what it tastes like
I like to drink wine I like to make wine

  49. January 23, 2008

    VinoPhilosopher

Great concept for today’s and tomorrow’s show, Gary. On the forums I’ve said that people may have different evaluations of a wine b/c they taste it at different places in the evolution of the wine. Looking forward to tomorrow’s show.

  50. January 23, 2008

    Kmarie

WHAT? I just discovered you after you were on Ellen. You can’t stop after seven more shows. That would be criminal.

  51. January 23, 2008

    Grapestompper (Dave)

Alright quit the 7 more episodes crap. You get me to stop lurking after a year and now you’re pulling that? KNOCK IT OFF!

Now very cool episode I’m looking forward to seeing how those wines taste tomorrow. I find a day with air is generally not a help. 5-6 hours seems peak for better wines, to me anyway.

QOTD: Grow grapes, make wine, drink wine. (and watch wltv… IF YOU KEEP DOING IT!!)

  52. January 23, 2008

QOTD: Babysitting my 3 year old grandaughter on Fridays. Nothing is better than the weekly fix I get from her.

    Nick G

    Only 7 More?

    AHHHHHH!!!!!

Your show is great, I learn a lot while I am watching it, and it’s really fun. I look forward to what you will bring next, every day. It would greatly sadden me if you went off the air.

  56. January 23, 2008

    Ed

    Great episode today…

7 more shows all time?!?!? I hope you meant 7 more to episode 400… well 8 more actually… Did you make a mistake?

  57. January 23, 2008

    Canadian Chris

QOTD: I love to drink wine with good food, great friends, family. I love to put effort and emotion into selecting a wine that I think my peeps will love. I dig seeing the look on their face, just as the wine goes down their throat – their eyes light up lips purse slightly, ears torque back and they look at you with wonder. Like they are seeing that sunset over the Loire valley, or the sun peeking over the horizon of the niagara escarpment, the love, the energy, the earth and adoration that went into the wine. Awesome. That and makin’ whoopie.

  58. January 23, 2008

    Sharon

Nooooo… say it ain’t so, Gary!! I get the feeling perhaps you always thought 400 would be your max… urgh. How about 500? 500 is a nice number too.
There are so many more grapes and producers for you to talk about! Don’t let people criticizing your methods get you down. We like your methods just fine!
If there was a QOTD, I missed it.

  59. January 23, 2008

You going to quit now? I want my Vayniac Cab money back.

  64. January 23, 2008

    laposte

    QOTD;
I grew up on a family farm/ranch. I love to cut and put up hay. The smell of the dried grass, the blue sky, watching a hawk dive after a mouse or a gopher, and late in the afternoon looking for a little shade next to a bale to have coffee with my dad while he tells a story about when he was a boy.

  65. January 23, 2008

    Carlitos

QOTD. Be with people that allow me to learn about wine. Like you.

If in fact it’s true that 400 is the end then I have to say it’s been a really nice ride! Thanks, buddy!

  66. January 23, 2008

    Badger Ann

I’d have to say Gary that the buttoned-up look is just not you.

I like to watch my Badgers and Packers(sigh…)play football, plan and tend to my vegetable garden, and spend time with my husband discussing the day’s events over a glass of wine. The best things in life are simple and free.

  67. January 23, 2008

    Scott EJ

GV – What gives w/the final 7 episodes? You confuse me. I coulda swore at the beginning of 08′ you were talking about how excited you were about all the great shows you had in store. Unless you’re gong to be too busy expanding WL to places like Chicago, I’ll have none of that signing off crap. Also, how am I going to know which wines to pick for the great free shipping blowouts?

QOTD: Eat, drink, and be merry.

  68. January 23, 2008

    Sir Lurk-a-lot

This show has been like the sun shining. The effort and enthusiasm are through the roof and we all love you for it. I stumbled upon WLTV a few months ago and was hooked on the first episode when my deadpan face started to crack and turn to amusement because some random video blog just made my night. Thank you for the kick start into this fun wine world. Quaffy quaff quaff. I look forward to what you’re going to bring to the table everyday. Keep keepin it real GV, really real.

  69. January 23, 2008

QOTD: hang out with my family, my work and ridiculous as it may seem to my wife, watching the thunder show!

  70. January 23, 2008

    Joel M

GV I am having a hard time believing you are only doing seven more shows. But if it is so, it has indeed been fun. You brought a lot of new people to the wine world.

  71. January 23, 2008

    Andrew H.

I cannot wait for tomorrow! Also, I hope your just kidding about the 7 episodes. Take Care and Thank You.

Great episode! I had HIGH hopes for 99 points!
QOTD I love to get all my friends together go to one of favorite restaurants and everyone orders a different wine or brings a different one and we sit for hours talking and enjoying.

I refuse to even bite. You may manipulate all you want, just not here :)

QOTD: I love to learn! I don’t know why but I have this passion to know things. All sorts of things.

Are you moving to the Food Network?

  76. January 23, 2008

Entertaining as ever, but I’m concerned about you. Have you checked your blood pressure recently? Thanks for the ride!

  77. January 23, 2008

    Rich

Dearest Gary, I am a lurker, I admit. But the thought of you not doing your show anymore is so upsetting. We are of course grateful for all of the knowledge and sheer fun of the program, but I will miss it so much. We have started wine tasting parties in our circle of friends in no small part to you and the fun we have found with wine. If you finish at 400 may the food channel hire you to continue to bring your gift to the masses :)

Great show, what is with the 7 more shows? I was just making this part of my daily routine; glass of wine, watching the show. Great way to relax after a hard days work.

  84. January 23, 2008

Bro I was feeling wltv withdrawal then the show went up nice! I love to play squash

  85. January 23, 2008

Not 7 more and that’s it…surely you meant something else.
QOTD: Share a fun bottle of wine with friends and family. “in vino veritas”

  86. January 23, 2008

    Gotsha

QOTD —> Only seven more shows until Mott revolts and tells Gary to link it up himself. Gary, in turn, gets offended and starts throwing bobble-head dolls at Mott. The Dwight Schrute doll makes it through the ordeal unscathed, but all the Jets are lost to the injured reserve. Mott blugeons GV with a decanter and the blog fades to black (Don’t Stop Believin is playing in the background). Another Jersey epic comes to an End!!

  87. January 23, 2008

    JC

Once again, great show. I have the reverse problem. I buy wine, putting them in the cellar, and forget about them. qotd: joking, laughing, working hard …

GV come clean with this ‘7 more shows’ stuff … don’t be such a tease! Lay it out for us – we trust you!

  89. January 23, 2008

I would have to buy 730 bottles at one time in order to keep something in my basement for 2 years!

QOTD: I love to learn. Always and forever. Been having some fun with “Need for Speed” on the Xbox, too.

  90. January 23, 2008

    Nathan H

Gary man, why only seven more episodes? Are you not feeling the love from the Vaynernation? Is it something we did? If that is true, on behalf of the Vayniacs I appologise.

  91. January 23, 2008

    HuskerJamie

QOTD: Kicking back and watching the C’s on tv with a fire going.

Gary, I’ve got an authentic glow worm ready to ship to you if you stick around beyond 7 more shows.

  92. January 23, 2008

    Anthony L.

Gary, awesome episode. Thanks so much for the shout out for Michael’s birthday. You are the best.

What’s with the 400 show limit nonsense? That is unacceptable. You must march on. The wine world need you.

  93. January 23, 2008

    Tom R

What do I love to do? First, go on a long bike ride or trail-run or hike in a beautiful place, and then take a hot shower, and then open a bottle of good wine, and then play my fiddle (usually Irish & Scottish music), especially if some of my musician friends are around to play with me.

I can’t usually make all of those things happen on the same day, but any day that includes at least two of them is bound to be a pretty good day.

I am adopting a policy of refusing to believe your threat to give up the show.

  94. January 23, 2008

  97. January 23, 2008

    vivaitalia

WTF is this seven episode thing about. If it’s true, why would you just throw that in right at the end with no further information or explination. I think those of us who’ve been watching daily for 1 1/2 years plus deserve it. I’m sure you’re extremely busy and your stock is high. I just don’t understand leaving the thing that brought you your fame. Then again, i’ve never been in that position so who am I to judge? I’m so glad you did the Run Rig because it’s something i’ve been wanting to try and now I think it can wait for awhile. As always, thanks for all you do for us.

  98. January 23, 2008

    Cheryl

As always, great show. Do you realize how lucky we are to have somebody as fun as you teaching us about wine????

QOTD I love to spend time with my family, especially if it’s at a beach.

QOTD: I love to dream about the “MOTT LINK IT UP T-SHIRT!!!!”
I also love to snowboard and then go back to the lodge, pop a bottle of good port with a little dried figs, beef jerky and stilton cheese. Add some great people into the mix, sprinkle with some stew and watch the magic unfold. A few knit sweaters also never hurt anyone.

Yo, Mott, if you have powers to link it up don’t you also have powers to create a T-shirt? Damn, I really *explicative* think that T would sell like gangbusters.

no. no. nonononono. please. puhleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase don’t let these be the last of the bunch. I can’t LIVE without GV there to get me through the week. I NEED MY WINE KNOWLEDGE. This cannot happen. THIS SHALL NOT PASS!
    Wait.
maybe you just meant the last few before 400. please. Please God. In heaven. I’ll become nondenominationally god-fearing if this isn’t the end. You know you want it, God.

Mulling over the 7 more shows comment. I guess I’ll be there for the 7th to see what happens.
Great show, great wines, cozy atmosphere.
QOTD: I love to be with friends. family, and cats. A good meal and some memorable wine are great extras.
A shout out to Sailor who had a drain inserted into an abscess on his back today (altercation with Tigger) and has already removed the drain – in record time.

The forum might have turned into a circus but I still look forward to the show everyday!

7 shows? first that better be BS. You mentioned that you had a feeling of responsibility now from having so many viewers? Pressure getting to you? Just remember this quote from MLK, figured it made sense since we just had a day off for him.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – MLK

NOW KEEP DOING THE DAMN SHOW!

  107. January 23, 2008

    Arthur

Gary, Agree with you 100% about popping wines too soon. Even with the fact that today’s wines are far more forward and few last past a decade, most wines are very young on release. People drink them up too soon.

  108. January 23, 2008

I sure hope you are meaning 7 (really 8) more shows until the 400th show…..and 107 (really 108) more shows until your 500th show, because I am sticking around until atleast 1000 shows.

QOTD: I love watching movies, learning about and drinking wine, and drinking tea. I also love music.

Now that’s an amazing episode Gary; i love the revisit concept. Kudos. Hey by the way, thanks for getting me into wine because QUESTION OF THE DAY wine is something i love to do.

    Christopher J

What do I love to do? Watch WLTV!! What would I do with only seven more episodes?

However, you are right Gary. You only live once, everyone should indulge once in a while. Makes life worth living. Good advice.

Also, I would hope that you will keep doing the show to 400 at least. Seven more shows would only be 399!!! You would not do something like that, your competitiveness would not allow it. Just like Mr. 3000.

  113. January 23, 2008

    Zinny

Oh man . .the 7 episodes comment and the Apple TV bit make me think that the question we’re going to have to ask ourselves is . .are we willing to pay for Wine Library TV episodes?

On the other hand you were alluding to the Apple TV thing like it was a cool thing . .which paying for episodes would not be. Guess we’ll have to wait but I’m getting this panicky vibe. Please confirm that WLTV will remain free (well, except of course it advertises your store) so I can sleep again!

  114. January 23, 2008

WTF Gary only 7 more shows all time!!! I forgot what the QOTD was because of that bomb.

Gary, when are we doing an NYC Vayniac event– long over due, my man!

God, I’d love to try that last wine, I live for finding viscous, jammy-esque wines!

QOTD1: Firm Bing or Rainier cherries, mmm.

QOTD: I love to rip on you as I’m so close to doing for possibly ending WLTV on the 400th episode. I don’t want a damn iTV as a condolence gift, keep WLTV truckin’, GV!

Great Episode, look forward to tomorrow’s show to see how the wines evolve.
It’s true that most wine is drunk too young, but you can also age a wine too long. I’ve had allot of wines that were too old, the fruit had disappeared.
A would rather drink a wine thats too young because you can decant it or drink it the next day. Their is no way to fix a wine that is too old.
I don’t understand why people can’t see your kidding about the 7 more episodes.
QOTD: WLTV, drinking good wine with good friends!

QOTD has got to be for me at least new experiences to do, to taste, to go somewhere unknown. That’s one reason I enjoy wine so much, just when i think I know what something will be like BAM!! It got me it will be completely different or something new.
Now GV 2 things 1)North Carolina its great you should be coming down…

Wow…the comments so far are half denial and half animosity. If you go through with the 7 shows thing, it could be total anarchy in the wine world.

Loved the show! Sometimes, it is nice to see your serious side and test big ass wines! I have not tried the Torbreck…but it is on my “bucket list”.

  126. January 23, 2008

    JoshL

Great show Gary! Another out of the ordinary episode that absolutely worked perfectly this time! The best advice I got from you from the past episodes is to keep coming back to an opened bottle of wine that one didn’t like the first time around. The come back and analyze how it evolves, and if it doesn’t get any better for your palate…at least you get a better feel for what you don’t like, and therefore stronger understanding of what you like! I’m hoping the 7 more episodes comment doesn’t mean what the vaniacs are fearful of…if it is…I might have to drive up and bring some hurtin’ (more than whatever that chocolate massage thingy costs…)…I mean, you can’t expect me to go to Parker for wine advice if you’re gone…the dude looks like a caveman…

  127. January 23, 2008

I hope you’re BSing us GV. 7 more shows?!? Just when the Vayniac nation is rolling strong. Come on, you must believe this has tremendously helped WL. I’m happy to purchase wines from WL – you put out a great show and educate me. Therefore, I buy my wines from you.

    Please keep it up!

    couple of things:

stop with 7 more shows forever. N puh-leeze.

still no NYG shout-out? forget EricG and let GlennL take you to the Big Blue. you don’t have to suffer for the next decade dude. you really don’t.

what is up with meh and redonkulous? online poker terms? you a player???

love the idea of revisiting these wines manana. very cool. i also think Ferrer has priced itself out of the marketplace and if i am spending 3-figure coin in Oz it’s on Grange.

remember, Blue is for you. suffering is overrated!

I hope you just mean 7 till 400. I have had the Torrebeck and hated it. It really isn’t wine in my book. I’m posting at 11:30 at night because my friends and I each brought a bottle of Gruaud Larose from 1976-1999. This was wine and at the time these were bought they were almost give away. In 1978, no one was predicting these wines would be any good in 5-10 years much less up to 30 years. None of these were $150 wines and still aren’t but well made. This was a winery in decline until 1976 when they were bought out and a new winemaker brought in. This also shows what you can do with putting wines away. Almost nothing in my cabinet gets drunk prior to 2 years and most 5. And it doesn’t have to be expensive to last.

    Waiting for the tasting tomorrow.
I just had a full bodied Zin with 14.8% alcohol that totally overwhelmed the palate the first day but after a day or so it was great. A lot of dark fruit and a very smooth wine which I enjoyed tremendously. Also had on the same schedule, a new world fuit bomb (also Zin), medium bodied, which tasted fine the first day but wasn’t anything to write home about a day or two later.

Gary, great show! Not by choice, but by practicality, it’s been taking me 24-48 hours to finish a bottle these days! Lately, it’s been shiraz/viognier– and I’ve enjoyed most of the bottles more on day 2.

    Nice show Gary…..

QOTS: If I had to pick one thing that I like to do I would have to pick, “talking with the wiser generation”. Sitting down and having a conversation (really listening more than talking) with someone over the age of 65 or more. Especially someone in the mid to late 80’s and older. These folks have so much wisdom and I always learn so much from them. I am 50 plus and I still can sit for hours and listen to the stories and view points of a 90 year old person. Just unbelievable. These folks are a dying breed. The good Lord doesn’t make them anymore.

Gary don’t threaten to only do 7 more shows – I’m sure you’ll end up with crazy stalkers (I’ll start the fund – first paid stalkers :P ).

Loved the show – oh so aching to try one of those Torbreck’s – might have to find an excuse to indulge – perhaps I might be able to find one ;) .

Playing w/ wine is an excellent idea! I’ve been doing it over the past two months or so thanks to you – and highly recommend it. I wonder if thats where sangria came from :P

This is by far my favourite episode to date. I’ve been watching the show since episode 197 (missed a few here and there) and it inspired me to get into wine. As a university student I am glad that Gary has donated his knowledge and enthusiasm to all of us to educate us on this great activity.

  153. January 24, 2008

Whoa whoa whoa. I just found WLtv a month ago and now you’re saying its only got 7 more shows? Gary, you are the reason I started giving wine a chance. My girl loves it but hated that I never shared it with her. Now I am learning about wine and you’re blowing us off? Not cool dude.

Quite surprising that there haven’t been more ‘corked’ wine with all the bottles tasted in almost 400 episodes.

There has to be more than 7 episodes left. We are just getting played by GV a bit. Likely just a trick to get the comment section smoking. At least I’m sure hoping that is the case!

I’ve only been around WLTV for a few months, especially because I turned 21 last June and have just started to appreciate good wine. So I am breaking my lurker status to implore Gary to continue WLTV. While he stresses the importance of trusting your own palate, the ability for me to compare my opinion of a wine with a much more experienced oenophile has been invaluable in my advancement of wine enjoyment. Please, keep up this excellent show.
QOTD: Listen to a beautiful piece of music.

Hold on. Did you really just say 7 more shows? You are the only cool guy in the wine business. If you are only doing 7 more shows, can you get a TV deal with Food Network or something? That would be great. Please keep making episodes. Please. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! You are the greatest!

I know you are not going to stop because A.)You haven’t changed the wine world yet. 2.)You are too young to retire. III.) You have way too much energy to give. and lastly, you are such a success and such a natural that this thing has just begun and you know it.

So I bet you are going cable or something.

    Gary,

I just had a meeting with some very important people and we decided that you simply must carry on with the show. THE SHOW MUST GO ON. I know that you need affirmations from time to time. Again, you must keep doing the show….it’s very simple.

QOTD: I love shopping for wine. I love browsing little shops here and there and discussing what the owners like. I also, secretly, love it when they try to sell me some crap – they never expect to have an educated consumer in their midst. Yesterday I was unable to find any 100% Petite Verdot, but my wine shopping did earn me a bottle of Grenache, a bottle Roussanne, a botttle of Pinot Gris from Oregon (of all places) and some white from the Rhone (which I had last night and it was delicious).

Gary, we need you. Don’t leave.

  168. January 24, 2008

    MagnumGourmet

QOTD – I love to snowshoe in the mountains at night. Very few things that are nearly as peaceful.

    Enjoyed the episode today.

What do I like to do? I like to spend time with my family. Period. Gary, I suffered a profound family loss last week, and am finally starting to recover. Family is everything. Wine is a fun hobby, but without people you love to share it with, it’s no better than Tylenol. I’m glad I finally got back to seeing a WLTV episode. Made me feel good. (What happened to fShare?) As usual, thanks for your enthusiasm, knowledge, and good times.

  170. January 24, 2008

    Hotshot162

What a show! This is inspiring to the point that it makes me feel like wine should be a part of everybody life or something…just a very interesting message from Gray today!

QOTD: Where should I start? It’s such a board question and I just love to do so many different things! Get to know people, listen what they have to say, eating, drinking wine, playing and watching sports, movies, musics, poker, driving (not in the traffic though), and most importantly try new things!!

Gary, about you’re only doing 7 more episodes, what do you mean? You’re not serious, are you?

  171. January 24, 2008

    Chris Tessari

QOTD: I love watching your show. I’m in law school right now and read huge 6 inch caselaw books all day. My passion is wine and your show gets me excited to learn, taste, and seek out wines from all over the world. Don’t stop the show!

Gary, this is my first comment ever!

I’m writing from heart of Brooklyn in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy). First of all, you made me smile when you dropped the Rick Ross (White on White) reference the other day. Nicely done and under the radar.

You summonsed me out of the lurch with your gallant defense and impassioned retort to those who may offer more critique than congratulations as you seek to demystify one of our most common social customs (drinking wine) all while bringing friends, families and more importantly, strangers together.

You are changing the wine world and you’ve certainly changed my world.

  173. January 24, 2008

I love to drink wine. I also love to act on stage. If only I could play a wino on Broadway…
I think you meant to say only 700 more shows…right?

  175. January 24, 2008

    Mandy

Wow, one sip of fruit bomb and you’re almost falling out of your chair, hehe.
I hope you don’t listen too much to people on certain wine blogs that are critical of your tasting methods. There are plently of us out here that “get” your overall message and aren’t going ot run out and buy wine just because you say. You adamently encourage people to try new things and listen to their own tastes, not follow ratings.
Thanks though, for the Wine Library church that reminds us why we watch. But still, really, don’t listen to the turds.

    Gary,
I just scanned the comments to this episode and they are overwhelmingly pleading for you not to end winelibraryTV at 400. I must say I went to bed last night hoping you weren’t serious but this morning I truly woke up with sinking feeling of sadness that the show would be ending. I must ask, please, please, please, keep going. If the daily shows are too much, why not go to a weekly schedule? Think about it man. You’ve really done a lot for the wine world, but must more needs to get done and you’re the man to do it.

On the other end of the price spectrum, I thought this about the 2005 Las Rocas de San Alejandro Catalunya. Much better the next day. Letting it open let it get a little funk!

Excuse Me, 7 more shows….. That would be #399
You have to at least 8 for the big #400

    Hi Gary!

I just tried a Ribera del Duero at the local store tasting… and had an epiphany! I’ve tasted on-point lychees in gewurz, grapefruit in sauv blanc, and burning rubber in a chilean cab. However these are all single aromas/flavors. Last night at the tasting, I had a wine that had a complex flavor profile that was exactly… I mean EXACTLY like BBQ ribs! To me it had all the individual elements. I couldn’t figure out what was going on with the nose, and then all at once it came together:

2003 Bodegas y Viñedos Valderiz Ribera del Duero (Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero)

NOSE: Exactly, I mean EXACTLY like barbecue ribs – smokiness, some caramelized sweetness, a little savory, slight cherry, a little meat, slight vinegar, maybe a little mesquite. Crazy!

PALATE: Some sugar, but with good tannic grip to balance it. Really falls apart on the midpalate. Quite hollow – I get nothing except generic “wine” smells. Very surprising considering the deep, interesting nose. 100% Tempranillo, $30

    W Miree

Wow! You hit a bunch of nails right on the head! Everbody’s taste preferences fall “some place” along a very long preference continuum, and continually changes throughout their life. It is most unlikely that any one person would be at the same place in the continuum as another person who is recommending a particular wine….it could be close or miles away. If your place along the coninuum is substantially away from the person making the recommendation, you are probably in for a major disappointment, even if the recommender is Parker, Spectator, or GV. A high score on a wine does not guarantee that you will like a wine. It only means that if you do happen to like that kind of wine, the odds are improved that you will like the specific recommendation. Therefore, it is very good advice for people to taste the wine themselves before buying, especially if they are inclined to buy a bunch of it. And even if they have tasted it and like it, they need to be aware that their own taste preferences will most likely be changing over the future years.

It is unfortunately, but true, that buying and collecting wine is a “trial and Error” process at best. The good news is that you do tend to get better at it after a number of years of experience and lots of tasting; for instance you begin to recognize that certain advisors tend to match up with your own palate better than others. Use them more often, but still taste.

Great show! Can’t wait to see the next one to see how the wines developed over 24 hours.

  202. January 24, 2008

    GregStefos

The most helpful information that I have learned from your show is to drink what wines I like and enjoy, not what others like. What others tell me, and what I learn from you, give me suggestions about a particular wine to try. Additionally, I am more likely to try a wine that you feel is “worth” the price, that one that you feel is overpriced.

Your shows are outstanding, and I continue to tell my friends to check it out.

Gary, I only started watching WLTV about 20 episodes ago and already integrated it in my day. You can’t stop doing this great thing after episode 399.

By the way, I am unable to play #391 and #392 on my ipod. I read a similar comment by someone else in the comments to #391, so it seems to be a common problem. Did you change anything in the way you record or publish the episodes?

Hey, what the fudge do you mean, 7 more shows. No, freaken way. You have us hooked on the daily WLTV fix. You cant bail on us in 7, no way. Tell us it aint so. And, by the way, where is the Mott T???

    Sniffy Snifferton

To the viewers: did you know that 30% of your sense of smell is in your mouth? When you sniff wine, do so with your mouth slightly open near the rim of the glass (which is hard to do when your entire nose is in it!) and inhale slowly as you sniff. You’ll open up a whole new door to smelling wine and definitely improve your experience.

  213. January 24, 2008

    GV…

I often get a drastic evolution in long aeration on the Malbec. They gain so much. I hope it is the case with Altamira.

Regarding TCA contamination (corked wines), sometimes you do not get the corked smell. Instead, you can get a partial or extreme suppression of the aromas. Couldn’t be the case Gary?

Really like that you are bringing up drinking a bottle over a few days. This is often what I do, because if I finished a bottle a night I’d be hammered. Also, it is a good way to get a glimpse of what a wine might do if aged over a period of years.
QOTD: I like; sharing a fantastic meal with family and friends, getting out doors and doing something active like riding a bike, boating, skiing. Also, travelling and seeing the world and meeting people.

Hey G, what’s this all about 7 more shows!! Unacceptable! We’ll assemble all the vayniacs and march in thousands to WL and force you & Mott to tape the shows :-) .
I like to read, swim, experience the great outdoors, and of course drink wine… Cheers

    RANDI

    Great show Gary!
What do I like? What a question!?! Beaches, Sunsets, Being in Love, Music, Traveling/Adventure, Checking out new Restaurants, Time w/Friends,Family, that feeling of accomplishment at the end of a hard-earned day… and mostly GREAT WINE!
    :)

    OH! And SHOES! Hahahah.

    Chris Braun

I hope you’re kidding about only doing 7 more. I just found you last month!

QOTD 1: All cherries are good, though I favor firm.

QOTD 2: Hiking/climbing on a cool crisp day, followed by a glass or two of wine on the terrace of my favorite local winery. Both nice alone, but even better with a friend.

  270. January 24, 2008

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: hang out & joke around with my kids; canoe/kayak; exercise, run races, lift weights, play sports; make love; read nonfiction books; wander thru forests in the springtime or summer; eat chocolate, pizza; drink wine, coffee; flirt with women; listen to music; …..this list could be really long, because life is good, and there are so many things to love to do.

  271. January 24, 2008

    Kevin

QOTD: I love to taste new wines, cook great food, write music, hug my daughter, travel with my wife, waterski. Life is good.

Gary – if you really are only up for 7 more shows, I don’t blame you. I’m sure you have other things that require your time. You’ve obviously made a huge impact, and you should be really proud of the work you’ve done. IF you change your mind, I’ll look forward to more. If not, good luck with whatever you’ll be passionate and energetic about next. Have to admit though – it was a shocker.

  272. January 24, 2008

    cnw

Alright now I love this show, the spa is FINALLY about the open and quite frankly I’ve just about gotten my life back to normal…. GARY, you can NOT be serious……. I mean seriously!!! Don’t leave me – I have so much more to learn!!!

Surely, you must be joking around or morphing the show or something but not doing any more shows just isn’t a possibility! Cut back, we could all appreciate and understand that – but ONLY doing 7 more, that’s not cool Gary!

    QOTD1: firm absolutely firm
QOTD2: chill with a great glass of vino, fantastic friends and family, great food – that’s what makes life worth it, don’t you think?

  273. January 24, 2008

    colby

Gary – ever thought of doing a show with blind tastings? We’ve found that labels and price affect what many people think of wine.

    Cheers,

    Rhonda

I certainly hope you are kidding GV! Finally Mark Gastineau makes an appearance, I had a huge crush on him when I was young.

qotd: I love to read and learn.

    Freddy Fred

Man, this sucks, I’ve only been watching for a few months and I’ve just started to enjoy some wines and Garry wants to pull the plug? You know the feeling when you find this great show on TV and just when you start to like it a lot, it gets canceled? Yeah, that’s pretty much how I feel.

Are you not concerned about the sellout name calling and downward spiral of support from your fans if you’re going to tv or another distribution medium that not as freely available as your video blog? Don’t you think you’d get more respect, support and recognition going forward with the show just the way it is? I’d just hate to see you turn into one of those Food Network guys that puts their name on everything just to make more money even though they already wipe their butts with $100 bills.

Make the right choice and make us happy, keep the show going… yeah I know it’s selfish but I’m not ready to let go hahaha

  276. January 25, 2008

    YoungDave

First off, I know you, Mr. Vaynerchuk, and I call shenanigans and BS on your 7 day comment.
    #2) Firm cherries, baby.

QOTD: I love to study and perform improv and dramatic performance, distance run, taste new, unique wines and cuisine, go wine shopping for values, take short road trips with friends, breathe the fresh, clean air after the rain on a Spring day, go swimming at a lake where my family vacations each year, cooking, and spending time laughing and enjoying the company of family and friends as often as possible… and watching WLTV 5 times per week for 2 years hasn’t been so bad either.

    Gary,
7 more shows! Thats Crazy! I know I will have 400 shows to look back on and enjoy but you can’t leave yet.
Anyways I also prefer cherries “firm” and I enjoy wine party’s, a little Wii action and traveling. (also watching Wine Library!)

  284. January 25, 2008

    CHATrBox

Way to preach it up GVNC! Reflection is good for the soul.

Pop it, sip it, drink it, chug it, bong it (I’ve actually seen it happen)!

I like my cherries like I like my…aaahhhh…firm. I like them firm.

Love the Malbec, but $10 bottles more my speed.

QOTD: Relax with good friends, good wine, and good conversation.

  285. January 25, 2008

I must have heard you wrong???? 7 more shows, that’s it?! No way…..we love you…..btw, firm cherries all the way.

Torbreck brings the thunder. Defies words. 2004 The Factor is the best wine I’ve ever had, as I’m not a big fan of the co-pig Viognier.

Gary-what kind of glass is that?

QOTD: I like to drink really good wine and gamble.

  287. January 25, 2008

    Matt

Watched #393 before I watched this one. Had to come back here to see the Zapruder film moment…”even though I am only doing 7 more episodes…”

My comments on the next show were a little harsh in retrospect. Its obvious this bomb was planted like a terrorist to acheive maximum exposure and panic. But we don’t negotiate with terrorists – and there will be no stopping the Vayner Nation. We will fight this on the beaches, we will fight this in the vineyards, we will fight this in the tassting rooms. Never give up! Never, never, never, never give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GV, Say it ain’t so……..I guess if it is that is one way to make a change in the wine world for the thousands of Vayniaks. We love the show, we have reached out to many, to promote……yet like all good things they come to an end. Sorry to see it happen (if it is true), but enjoyed my time with ya….too bad it took me so long to find out about WLTV.

QOTD: I own a business that allows me to help make people smile (literally), and it makes my day when I can help change even one person I have seen that day. I have made it my crusade for the year 2008 and beyond to be there and make a difference in at least one persons life per day. If I can reach out an include or help a single person each day I am in the office I havee found what I love to do. Sounds Korny, but it is my crusade to change my world.

  290. January 25, 2008

    Ibrake4wine

    Gary,

No way man, you cannot stop WLTV. To much more work for you to do. I have been watching for about 2 months now and have found that it has really opened my eyes. Opened my willingness to try new things and question all my previous conceptions about wine.

WLTV is on the cusp of exploding. You need to read “The Tipping Point”. You are there man, it’s happening. You can’t stop now. How can we help! Do you want idea’s for shows. I imagine there is no shortage of opinions out there. Keep it going!!!!!

QOTD # 1 – Got to be, Crisp, firm exploding in your mouth cherries
QOTD # 2 – I love WLTV, Don’t take it away from me.

  291. January 25, 2008

    MARKSHARKY

Hate to see you cancel the whole show do you have someone or sometwo at the store that has a good palate and personality that can take over for you then you pop in maybe once a week? How about that women that was on last week ;-) .

  292. January 25, 2008

    Michael

Haven’t written for a while, but I have really taken your message to heart. I’ve been organizing blind wine tasting parties, trying lots of new stuff (love gwerz) and enjoying wines in a whole new way. I’m a very new person to wine, and am loving it thanks to your show. That being said, I ordered a bunch of wines from wl that you went nuts over and almost all of them I hated! Well, not hated, but I think you are pushing this in the right direction is that what you enjoy is not a guide to what I enjoy. I am also dubious of the 90+ wines now, and reading tasting notes much more carefully. In all, knowledge is king, thanks for you to point the direction of why wine is fun, I’ll take over now.

    Cheers

  293. January 25, 2008

Great show, love the monologue. QOTD: I love to help. If it is the last seven, make it the best 7 ever. This is a great start.

Other than wine, which is my major passion, I enjoy playing jazz piano and listening to jazz, and speaking French.

    Vinacull

For me, the most interesting and exciting EP in a long time! I am a huge Torbreck fan, so I’m on the edge of my seat to see what what the R-squared does in the next EP. QOTD1: Firm cherries all the way. QOTD: Love to do “shoot outs” on audiophile recordings the same as doing wine tastings.

  296. January 26, 2008

    Dan-o

    Great episode GV!
I have had the Run Rig and I agree that it is like the list of things to do before you die, wine related – “Petrus, Grange, La Landonne, Run Ring…..”. However, it is not an every day quaff!

I am very passionate about my work, my family, and my faith – not necessarily in that order. Today I played “Scene It” with my 2 pre-teens because it was a blast to spend time with these creations of my wife and I.

I also love wine, vineyards, great restaurants, and helping those in need.

We have to all remember that we will not be remembered by what we collect, acquire, or possess. We will be remembered by the impact we have had on others – in a positive way!

  297. January 27, 2008

    Firm cherries
QOTD: I like to live life and spend time with family and friends.

What??! What was that you slipped in at the very end?! Say it ain’t so! If your schedule is too rough, at least make it once or twice a week, don’t go away altogether!

I saw the blog that flamed you and the way you evaluate wine. You did a great job responding to him. I just think that he doesn’t get what you do.

Keep doing what you love to do.

I love to spend time with my family and friends and go flying.

I’m catching up on my WLTV now… got super busy after the holidays…

7 MORE SHOWS?!?! Where did THAT come from?!

    Gary V,
So you have to warn us before dropping a bomb like that. I almost had a caniption. Anyway I understand if you need a BREAK but stopping? My man you have an amazing thing going and You cant go and pull a Barry Sanders on us.

QOTD: Firm Cherries and I love on a day to day basis here just being able to go out and speak in a completely different language then I was raised in. It gets me pumped each and every day. Oh and WLTV of course

  304. January 29, 2008

    JayZee

Yeah, right, 7 more episodes. Like I believe that. ;-)

  305. January 29, 2008

    Tommy Vernieri

I don’t discriminate against any kind of cherries.

QOTD: I love to program, I love to play Ultimate, and I love to drink wine.

Did you say something about seven episodes? What are you doing next?

Last week I had the waiter decant a wine out at dinner for the first time. It was a really interesting dinner overall. I picked out a few wines that interested me but they only had one available, the 2001 Lang & Reed Cab. Franc. I really enjoyed the 2002 so I wanted to try the earlier vintage. The first weird thing is that they brought out the 2002 and I actually noticed. I started to reconsider because well we had already tried that wine and I generally like to drink as many different wines as possible rather than drinking the same wine more than once. We decided to open it anyway, but while talking about it I made a comment that the last time we had it we decanted it for three hours. Next thing I knew, we had a decanter and we let it sit for a about 45 minutes while we had some early courses.

It was a lot of fun. I’m definitely interested in breaking out the decanter at restaurants more often.

QOTD – I love to drink wine. Damn. That was easy.

Drink wine is certainly high on the list. Also, I like to read about science, learn new things, and cook and eat good food.

QOTD: I love my husband and daughter, as well as my extended family. I also love to run a few miles, then do yoga, pour a glass of wine, get a good book and some dark chocolate, an enjoy it in a nice long hot bubble bath!

I must admit that I pop and pour almost all my wines, but then the next day I’ll have another glass after it’s been open for a few hours then vaccum sealed, and there is a big difference in taste and smell. I am trying to trust my palate and look for specific wines that give flavor profiles that I enjoy, but also trying sooooo many new types that I didn’t even know existed 6 months ago, like the Albarino, thanks to you.

As for the side question, I love fresh Black Sweet Cherries from the Cherry Capital of the world, Traverse City, Michigan!

    JacobS

Working my way back to episode one, wishing I had heard of your show sooner. I’ll get there though. It’s funny seeing past episodes where I know “the future”.

qotd: I like treating myself everyday. I like a good workout, nice reading time for grad school, a trip to the cheese aisle, and definitely the wine aisle after your show.

  310. January 5, 2009

    Dessert Wine Nerd

Love the rant and I love my own palate. Always nice to go to a wine shop and ask about a type of wine and their first question is someting like “What are you using it for?” or “What do you like?” QOTD: My sense id humor. Its bizzare and at times ALL over the place. I think I would honestly be in a rubber room without it.
