QOTD: Who can save the show? Only GV! That’s what makes it the internet’s most passionate wine program!

  13. January 24, 2008

    Danny

    QOTD: I’m with Chandler!

Even though there are hundreds of Vayniac’s here who I’m sure would love to do a show about wine. Only a handful of them would share your passion and charisma. Whats goin’ on Gary? Why must you torture us?

Save the show? How about letting the vineyards come one and defend their wine?
Let 2 or three random winelibrary customers or Viewers sit and taste along side.
But really why change what works unless your getting bored.

gary you could save the show with an episode on the minervois focusing on a special winemaker and a great guy daniel domergue owner of “clos centeilles”
they do the job there !

    Andy Drinkard

Who can save WLTV? I dunno, but I find myself thinking about “that RocketBoom chick…”

Something just occurred to me, though. A certain Canadian won that contest to come do a show with you. Are you bailing out before that episode, GV? What happened with that?

Maybe it can’t be saved for now, but when I make my first million, I’ll come up to Jersey and politely persuade you to revive it :)

I like the idea of you adding one of your favorites to the show and matching up against a couple heavey-weights. Hey, how about doing that more often., you could get more than six more shows I’m sure.

I agree with comment earlier. Why the torture G-man? No “Mott Link it Up T-shirt and now only 6 more shows? No way. You wouldnt want the Vaynernation to come to NJ and pay you a visit or would you??

QOTD: Certainly not me. I am starting to feel like the kiss of death for wine podcasts:

    Wine For Newbies: dead
Winecast: Blog lives on but the podcast is on permanent life support
The Thunder Show: Counting down the last days

Maybe Mott can save the show(s) – literally – by burning DVDs. I’d buy the boxed set!

Big G, Why do you have to break our B***s? Your not going to stop the Thunder Show. That’s how I’ll save the Show. I’ll kick the Knowledge that you can’t stop the Thunder Show. The show is beyond you, beyond me and beyond all the Vayniac’s. It’s like the Vine, a growing living thing. T-Shirt time, “You Can’t Stop the Thunder Show” and on the back “Like it or Not!”

Okay Gary, what are you looking for from us. I have been watching you for three months now and have settled in to a nice routine. You hsve become my Seinfeld, every night, whenever there’s a new episode. What’s it gonna take Gary?????? Do we need to organize a protest in front of Wine Library. I’LL BE THERE!!!!
In all seriousness, I hope you are just planning on something bigger and better.(Did you get your own cable show?????)
If you are really retiring WLTV I want to just say thank you for your insane enthusiasm you have shared with all of us over the years. I hope you leave up the archive so I can go back and get a “dose of Gary” every now and then.
See you at The Wine Library
    Joe

    Gary,
    Thanks for the run….
It was a great +/- 2yrs. I’m going to miss you.
(Oh, maybe I’ll still check out winelibrary.com and buy a few bottles from time to time), and I’ll remember fondly the THUNDER & LIGHTNING!!!
Now that we’ve been led to the river, we’ll have to learn how to swim on our own… It’ll be interesting to see how many have reached ENLIGHTENMENT…
    What a way to go……………

    That sounds nice.

QOTD: Definitely not me, but it needs to be done. This was a great show, I really enjoyed seeing you go back to these wines after a day. Thanks for the recommendation, and thanks for putting so much of yourself into these shows. I hope the archive will remain available after the 400th. I have a lot of catching up to do!

  39. January 24, 2008

    Saubrey

Gary, I really hope that the 6 more shows stuff is just a bluff, but if it’s not I hope that your reason for retiring isn’t a bad. That’s to say, I know how much you love the show I hope that something bad hasn’t happened to force you to stop.

QOTD: Not by myself, but as a member of the wine rebellion I can help!

  40. January 24, 2008

    Marta M

Gary, actually, why we should save WLTV? Why do you want to stop at ep. 400?
Maybe I missed something, but you didn’t give any reason…

QOTD: Yes, I can save the show. I’ll tell U how in my comment to ep. 500 :)

  41. January 24, 2008

    Jon Armstrong

QoTD: I’ll call my congressman and see what I can do, but being in Ohio I don’t think that’d help much. I’ll continue to try, experiment, and follow my own palate with wine, and share with others. If we all do that the show will live on, though for my own selfish reasons I’d like to hope that the Thunder show will continue on in some form (was the Apple TV box in episode #391 a reference to changing channels or getting picked up elsewhere?). On the other hand, I can definately understand if the show is becoming a little too much to handle–hundreds of emails a day, planning, taping, meet ‘n’ greets, and running a business…
Do what makes you happy Gary, and what gives you time to spend with the family too.

  42. January 24, 2008

    KC

Best of luck in your future endeavors. I am glad I found this before it was over – I have learned a ton. Thanks for that.

  43. January 24, 2008

    hugh

    OK, GV, two comments here:
    1) You can stop fooling us about ending at episode 399….the ONLY way u r ending this “run” is if u r buying the J-E-T-S….and, well you’re just not there….yet….especially with the recent market woes…..now, MAYBE when Vay-ner-baby comes along….that would be a good reason to hang it up….

    2) that 80′2 gum was “Freshen-Up”….i recall liking the spearmint best

    keep rockin…..Go GIANTS!!!!!!!!!! (sorry)………..

  44. January 24, 2008

    Whipple

QOTD: No. Nobody can save the show. It’s over. Verklumpt. Verput. Wir fahr’n aug Angland….

You’re done. Stick a fork in it. How many more times can you mention dark chocolate, sour cherries and some ‘component’ followed by “which I like”?

This is not a product or phenomenon that changes on a daily basis. You’ve said it all (would even Hugh Johnson have carried on this long?). Give it up, go back to managing a store or two, and try to spend more time with your family.

    How’s that for inoculation theory?

    Like most everyone is saying:
Why? I don’t believe this is an economic decision. I have no facts to back up this opinion, but WL has to be doing better since you started WLTV. You’re just now getting the benefit for all the expenses you laid out in the first year. I alone had never ordered from WL until 8/07. Since then, I have placed 10 orders for a total of 10 cases + the Christmas pack + several bottles of the Vayniac Napa Cab Sauvignon (yet to be produced). You’ve got to be money ahead (or soon to be). Why stop WLTV now?

If this is a personal decision (you need to quit), who am I to tell you that you can’t retire from WLTV? Thanks for all you’ve done.

Please explain to us what’s going on.

  46. January 24, 2008

    John Farrin

QOTD: Where will you get your daily fix of adulation if you end the show? Where will you be able to view my insightful comments? :) Perhaps more importantly, will Sasha allow you to pop $150.00 wines anytime you want? So you see, it’s really in your best interests to save the show yourself! nOW, let’s not have any more of this nonsense.

  47. January 24, 2008

    PTO

I’m confused and sad . . . Just a couple of weeks ago, you were talking about the things you wanted to do with the show in 2008 (more viewer e-mails, more food pairing). Just last week, you were talking about how you wanted to have more Web 2.0 personalities on the show. I understand changes of heart, but this like a change of personality.

  48. January 24, 2008

    Paulo P.

QOTD: The show does not need salvation, it is within all converts. I bet that GV was able to build some awareness of our influence in the wine world. We are WLTV!

Please, GV … go for the Familia Deicas Premiere Cru Garage. It would the a fantastic farewell.

PS. Please, regarding the Apple TV thing, consider that some of us (countries, ie. Brazil) cannot have a apple store subscription. There are some stupid commercial regulations.

  49. January 24, 2008

    Sonnenuhr

Gary – Don’t fool around about stopping the show. It’s not nice to scare your fans like that. You got us hooked, now you have a responsibility. So just suck it up – make it a wine a day or something, but keep ‘em coming!

  50. January 24, 2008

Gary, thanks for mamories. Ta Ta’s for now.

  51. January 24, 2008

Very cool shows yesterday and today.. very interesting..
One question though.. I usually cork my wine, even if i’m going to finish it the next night.. is it best to leave it uncorcked? or for that matter, not use one of those glass balls to seal the air in the decanter?

QOTD: BOOO only a few more episodes! BOOO TO THAT! despite all your ‘parting thoughts’ I have a feeling you are messing with us, we can tell you still have fun with the show.. In any case, I’ll save the show! Hire ME as your ‘director of operations’ replacement, and then you’ll have time to continue doing the show! I’ll need some training though :-D

  52. January 24, 2008

    Doc Johnson

The GV nation will save WLTV. maybe a little bit of GV

  53. January 24, 2008

    Withnail

It’s obviously not real by the way he continually references it on the show with a straight face. He’s getting ready for another big joke/announcement/publicity stunt.

  54. January 24, 2008

    */^_^\*

qotd: yes i can…by being the new host, if that’s what’s needed, i’ll make the sacrifice

  55. January 24, 2008

    MagnumGourmet

QOTD – Hey Gary, the qotd is crap…

It’s like going to a surgeon and asking them to operate on a patient without telling them what the ailment is.

Since you are not going to tell us what the diagnosis is I will have to guess. Based on your conversation yesterday I would say that you are getting worried that your opinion has gotten too much weight and that you can possibly negatively impact some winemakers livelihood. Hell, that would make me reticent to share my opinion too.

If that is the case, then there really is no saving the show. You’ve gotten too big for your own good and it has come back to bite you in the ass.

You can always change the theme of the show to not reveal the producer of the wine you are drinking. Only give the varietal and region it is from and talk about the elements that you find in the wine. Educate the Vaynernation specifically around the general trends of “Place”.

  56. January 24, 2008

    Fred Schechter

Well apparently the little bit of me wasn’t helping!!! Sheesh!!!! What about the little bit of the rest of you!? Hmmm,,

Well if that won’t work, if anyone has a little bit of Gary,, let’s just clone it and make it do the shows. It can’t be half bad.

We’ll call it GV2, and it shall wear a hat made of antlers!!!

  57. January 24, 2008

    prouty

    Gary:
I’m just one voice screaming from the lower bottom corner of Vancouver British Columbia, but I’m a big guy and I’m pretty sure that if you poke your head out the window of your office and listen carefully, you will hear me. The show must go on!!!
If I must… I will begin at show number one and relearn what you have given. I will continue my wine journey like one David Carradine wondering the earth, smashing cigars in my mouth, eating dirt, rolling my socks up in my mouth, eating grass and liking rocks until my palate is so in tuned with cigars, dirt, sock funk , grass and wet rocks that I too can call myself a wine drinker.

  58. January 24, 2008

If, as you say, “I can save the show”, tell me what I need to do!

Great episode I usually decant my wines so I feel that!
QOTD Of course I can save WLTV, but Gary you love helping everyone and leading the wine world revolution see you for the next 400 episodes!

QOTD: ME! (with a little bit of you)

    Don’t go, Gary!

  62. January 24, 2008

Gary! Check out Paul Horan’s comment in the facebook group “Keep Wine Library TV Going!” He says, “How about just a cutback?? Instead of 4 wines EVERY day, do one a week with 6 or 8 wines… I’m sure your loyal fans would have your back on this!!!”

We’d really miss you. And Mott.

QOTD – Save it from what?

  64. January 24, 2008

    Little Jonny H

Ha Ha GV! We’ll see you on Foodnetwork or something like that. While WLTV may die (not really, b/c there are too many who haven’t watched all the episodes), we know you’ll be doing something similar to WLTV for a long time on some sort of program…. I hope :-/

  65. January 24, 2008

    Will Ska

Yes, I can save the show. I am bringing along an explosion of friends who are just discovering this awesome show. If need be, I will guest host this show and broadcast from the wonderfully zany and a bit crazy city of Washington, DC. I’m your huckleberry, Gary!

  66. January 24, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

It would be a shame if you’re serious, but do what you have to do. If you’re worried about burn out, cut down to 3 shows a week

    “T”

  67. January 24, 2008

    Syrahhhhhhhhh

    GNVC,

Thanks for the tip on the Leocadie. I’d love to buy it from WL but I live in WA with these protectionist walls that we haven’t quite tore down. Maybe today we will, huh?

Anyway…QOTD: Can you say Craig Kilborn and John Stewart? Oh yeaaaaah, that’s right! The Daily Show used to be hosted by Kilborn and now who remembers that?! Best be careful with these idle threats. Maybe I could do this show? In fact, I KNOW I could do it. I wouldn’t be you, nobody is, which is why you need to think about quitting at around show 1000, but John Stewart…you see where I’m going with this?

Where do we send our audition tapes?

  68. January 24, 2008

    Feeling Punked

Are you trying to start your own version of Punked? Not falling for this gag as it’s just an attempt to feel the love from your followers. But, if it helps…The Lurkers can save the show by posting comments. GV feeds off of comments and wants to know he is still making a difference. So Gary, the lurkers will not allow you to stop :-)

  69. January 24, 2008

    KVolk

QOTD: the only to save WLTV is to find why it needs to end……….so GV what’s up? maybe it shouldn’t be saved? or maybe it needs to change? All I know is that “YOU with a little bit of the Vayner nation can keep WLTV changing and operating”

I still think your going to go big time and your just helping us prepare for the big switch from internets most passinate wine show to cables most passionate wine show……

  70. January 24, 2008

    The Lukas

    QOTD:
When you say “can YOU save WLTV?”, do you mean me personally, or YOU the vayniacs?

Because i think i could do it on my own.
Not sure how, but i’ll give it a go.

  71. January 24, 2008

    Neil

    QOTD:

1.) Maybe you need the Vaynernation to come out enmasse and make a huge posting on the 400th episode. I know when you gave away free stuff you got close to 1000 posts, whereas typically you get 200 or so. Is that what you need Gary? A shot in the arm? Tons of Vaynerlove? Tell us how many postings 1000, 2000?

2.) Assuming there’s no going back, how about a group potluck: letting the Vaynernation, the “Youuuuuuuuu” part of the closing line help a “little bit of Gary” by submitting episodes for review and potentially getting on the show proper? After it got rolling, you could still pop in when you felt the need or if the show got off topic.

3.) Who really needs Gary when there’s Sasha and what about AJ?

Then again you did this on the 200th episode – you pondered the next step and considered leaving. Deja vu?

Seriously, tell how many posts you need Gary and we’ll work it out.

  72. January 24, 2008

    E

Well that’s nice, a bottle of the Leocadie arrives at the office this morning and now this afternoon there it is on my screen, being sniffy-sniffed and admired. Seriously big-ass bottle on this thing, btw. It’s elegant and weighty and all, but I thought Minervois was kind of a poor man’s Rhone. Aren’t big-ass bottles a little out of character for the Languedoc?

And was it really a Bordeaux two years ago? Shoulda bought one of those, too. In fact, I thought I had …

QOD: yes, but who watches it in quicktime anymore? Seriously though, this is just a lead-in to the spinoff series, Ian Dorin’s Welcome To The Terroirdrome. Well, I’ve got my Prieto Picudo ready.

  73. January 24, 2008

    Aaron from Montana

Leave???? Save the Show??? Say it ain’t so! If comments you want, here’s one.

  74. January 24, 2008

    The Fanjestic

    QotD: Aquaman?

I am very interested where this is going. Either the show is changing to something else, or Gary has a really mean sense of humor and the show will go on.

Must the Vayniacs bleed burgundy to show our alliance?!?!?!?

  75. January 24, 2008

    Lb in KS

where is http://www.saveWLTV.com when you need it?

?? Did I miss something..I was certain it was the Malbec that was decanted in yesterday’s show, the Syrah was left open in the bottle to breath…am I wrong?

  76. January 24, 2008

    JOEL M

GV you are saying to many little things that hint of changing the show but not cancelling it. Why do a party In March? Why not just stop today? Why keep the mystery up? Could it be to draw more attention to your show? After all I can’t imagine your sales have gone down since your popularity went up. This decision will hurt sales big time. Oh well, I have been exited about wine long befor you came along and will be long after you are gone.

  77. January 24, 2008

    Azerule

You know how the cubs didn’t let that guy into Wrigley with his billy goat and they haven’t won a world series in the 100 years since? This is the exact same thing that will happen to the Jets if you stop the show. It will be known as the Vaynercurse. Kellen Clemens suffers a career ending injury in preseason, Vinny Testaverde comes out of retirement to lead every other team in the NFL to a superbowl title, the government will mandate all wines cost 16 bones, and the Jets never have another winning season. So you see, the show must go on…

  78. January 24, 2008

How does Gary affect a winemaker’s or vineyard’s reputation any more than Parker or WS? Seriously. Why can Parker and WS get a free pass for rating wines and recommending them and Gary not?

I hope this isnt the reason, I really hope it isnt.

All I know is that I was promised great things in 2008 from WLTV, I never thought that meant that it would end before the 1st month was over.

However, should it end, its been a great ride and please dont take the site down because I, for one, would like to watch and reference previous episodes.

I’ve got more to comment, but I’ll watch this episode first!!

  81. January 24, 2008

    Anthony L.

This can’t be happening. What can we do? How about getting over 1000 posts without a give away? Would that prove that the show is cherished by all?

How about what I suggested yesterday, do a once a week show. The loyal fans are not going anywhere?.

How about the simply fact that “They” will like that you’ve stopped changing the wine world. You don’t want to let that happen do you?

  82. January 24, 2008

    Christopher J

I think the big question is: “Save it from what?” You love doing the show too much, there is no way you would leave your loyal fan base.

How about if we pooled together and bought the Jets for you? Or maybe we can start small: we can buy the Vikings or something (only $782 mil.).

  83. January 24, 2008

    CW

Well the bottom line here is this.
    WLTV=GaryV. WLTV – GaryV = pointless.
So who can save WLTV ? Well that boils down to ‘What does GaryV require to continue to create episodes’. What can virtual friends do to make Gary want to continue ? Gary does seem to like numbers, ‘if I get 1000 comments, then…’, ‘only 7 more to go’, ‘only 370 more days to the next Superbowl…’ So we can produce site traffic, but what else ? If Gary is done, then that is it. Whinging is futile.

    Gary,
Don’t try and act like you’ve rated all the wines out there. I can go to any wine store within 20 miles with a list of the wines in “gary’s scores” and not find ONE.

  85. January 24, 2008

A long time lurker, I rise from the murky darkness to make an observation. Has anyone recalled that a few episodes ago, Gary had a box on the tasting table that housed none other than an Apple TV unit? A device that allows you to view video files from your computer on a television? WLTV, on your actual TV??? Sounds like a format transition, folks!

    Gary,

The Jets can make a comeback . . . AND SO CAN YOU!!!!! I have looked forward to the Vayniac March 29 event. It wouldn’t be the same without the Thunder Show getting us psyched. Cut back a little if 5 days a week is too vexing. Have some guest hosts to share the burden (Mott! Link some up.) But . . .THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!!!!

Vayner nation unite! We can save the show! GV ends every show emphatically pronouncing that we are responsible for changing the wine world, only with a little bit of him. While I would be devistated if he discontinues WLTV, we will survive. WE need to show him that we can step up. How is the question. Clearly GV has a very full plate so would more sub/guest hosting be necessary?

    GARY PLEASE DONT LEAVE!!!!
I am a “lurker” but I have only been watching the show for about 2 months…
In that time I have become a total ADDICT!!!!

If you stop making the show now I will cry my eyes out!
I fell in love with wine about a year ago and have been looking for someone just like you to inspire me and guide me and appeal to my wine needs.

So, I am begging you from the bottom of my heart, dont leave…
You are so appreciated and loved and admired.

If you do leave, I say Thank you for all the great episodes. I guess I will have to settle for the back issues on the website.

Love you Gary! You are my Boy!

P.S. Can you still order wrist bands? I cant seem to get one added to my cart on the website. If you cant order them, can you send me one?

I agree with what others have said:

    1) Cut back to, say, 3 episodes a week
    and/or
    2) Have more guests or subs
    and/or
    3) Ask viewers to submit THEIR episodes. That could be a lot of fun!

    Hey GV,

You have looked tired in recent weeks – but, man, I’ve still followed you each day. I was really a wine virgin when I started tasting several months ago. Even though you’re not the end all, your advice guided me to try, try, try new things.

You have had great energy this week and it’s radool to see how that’s translated into some amazing eps. I have a feeling the show is going to morph into something bigger and greater. It’s in your blood, GV…

Ultimately my answer to the qotd: Only you can save it, GV – only you.

    Gary,

Coming from the CKC crowd, there is only one reason that i got into the wine world. You and the show need to survive to recruit more people and influence the wine world. We are all here gary, we just need that little bit of you to save the wine world!!!

Happy to see the Leocadie recommendation. DHL just dropped my bottle off this afternoon.

QOTD: Gary, I know you love doing the show. But I know you love all the feedback you get from the community even better. It is only the lurkers that can save the show…plus, it would be pretty sweet to max out your friends on facebook.

So everyone that hasn’t…for the sake of WLTV…FRIEND GARY UP!!!

QOTD: I don’t get it. This is beginning to feel like 1969 and we sports fans know what happened that year. Save the show from what! It sounds like DaVinci getting ready to trash the Mona Lisa and asking “can I really save this?”

So will March 29 be considered “The WLTV Shiva” with Mott handing out the black ribbons at the door?

That being said-thank you from a this distributor for all the work you’ve done to bring people closer to our niche. And as for your words negatively affecting the industry, perhaps some over affected suppliers or winery’s need to get off their high horse and take things in stride. Who can save WLTV? Only YOU can prevent forest fires. Heh heh, only Gary can save WLTV. WLTV – Gary = MEH. GV IS WLTV. WLTV – Gary = I subscribe to International Wine Cellar, where no one has a personality.
Well, I have the Torbreck Woodcutter’s Shiraz in my ‘inventory’… sure it will be good, if not the massive fruit bomb that the Run Rig is.
Oh, stop putting us on GV, tell us what the heck you’re up to! There must be some master plan.

Wasn’t it you who said you would love to have more guest on the Thunder show? So why throw in the towel now? When there are so much more wines to tast and many more cool people you could have on the show. Anyway, great show and would love for you to stick around for at least 400 more episodes.

I’m not sure what we are trying to save it from. It is all GV regardless of the you and me comment you make each episode. Unless you have individual guests and that is a possibility. Hey what happened to that anyhow? The show has been consistent and has been entertaining and informative. I’m not sure what else one would want from an Internet video blog.

    Gary,
I friend’d you up, I watch daily, and I am even watching all of your previous shows and now I am posting, I will post every day if you want. That would be a small price to pay for what your teaching me. Why would you want to quit now? I really enjoy your show and I have learned so much. I will be really sad if you quit at 400.

What I like the most is that you give an honest opinion about the wine that you are tasting. I can usually tell just by the look on your face if you are going to like it or not. But, that honesty, is why I watch.

Sure, our palettes are different (mine isn’t nearly as advanced) but, I respect your opinion and I want to change how I look at wine. I want to learn.

I am going to my first tasting tomorrow night with a lot more confidence than I normally would have. Actually, I wouldn’t have went at all. Just for fear of looking like an idiot. Thats why I think you should keep the show going. I am sure there are a lot more peeps out there that want to learn too and many more who haven’t heard of you yet. I only started watching about a month ago. So I am sure there are many more out there.

I know I am rambling, cant help it I Love you man!!!

My QOD: If you had lots of money and could have lots of time, what whould you do?

Everybody take a deep breath and let GV do his thing. I agree with Michael – only the lurkers can save WLTV!! Well, the lurkers and GV. Well, ok, just GV after all. I mean, was there wine before GV? I can’t remember!?!?

    I can’t believe only one other commenter is thinking about that Apple TV box from #391, here. I just had an hour and a half marathon (Yesterday’s show, then #200, then today’s!) and I’ll tell you this, GV;

I admit it, I do write down the wines that get you really excited at a low price. But when I go to wine stores and can’t find them, I /keep trying/ I’ve discovered regions that I’d never even considered, after seeing you highlight some on the Thunder Show! I’ll do my part to change the wine world, GV, but I’m just getting going, and a lot of us could still use a little bit more of the Vay …. Ner …. Chuk.

  141. January 24, 2008

    Ricardo

QOTD: I’m hoping it’s a logic puzzle. Since GV’s always said it was us with a little bit if him that could change the wine world obviously the show is alot of him with a little bit of us. But incase that’s not the answer let us think fondly back on the past 393 episodes with fondness and remind ourselves that all truly great things such as wine and special times shared with friends are but fleeting and must be enjoyed while they are before us.

    JoshL

QOTD: so exactly who’s putting WLTV in danger? i can’t answer the QOTD without knowing what we need to save it from… is it cost issue? have you reached the point of diminishing return? maybe doing an episode once a week will help? or maybe have some sort of subscription plan? heck, if people are paying over 70 bucks a year for wine spectator, wouldn’t they rather pay a little to watch a wine show hosted by a russian jets fan who likes to fondle his cameraman’s man boobs? Man…past two episodes have been amazing…but this end of the show thing is really putting me down…first i break up with my gf in november, now WLTV gone in january…what am I gonna lose in february? the last episode of seinfeld sucked by the way…they really went out on a low note.

As long as there is wine to drink and learn from, there needs to be a show like WLTV.

Now it seems to me as if making the tv part is where you might be heading. After re-watching some of your ealier programs, you started this whole thing because you wanted a change and challenge. Well…it appears you might be ready for something bigger. Lord knows you deserve it.

Whatever you do, keep up the good work on teaching whoever your audience is ’cause there’s a limitless amount to learn about this wonderful subject.

Every night my six month old girl, Sophia, sits on my lap and we watch the Thunder Show together before she goes to bed. When your intro comes on her face absolutely lights up! She loves watching you Gary, you can’t disappoint her!

Gary won’t stop podcasting. WLTV might end, the Thunder Show might end, but GV loves his fans too much and we love him too much for him to leave us altogether.

For a guy who is detail-centric and ultra-open in terms of opinions and his general feel on life, it is a little weird to just drop “7 shows left” and not go into any more detail. Also joking about Mott losing his job and the general lightness of the whole thing makes me smell that something big is going to happen here. We are in for a big change.

After 400 episodes I suspect there was a realization that this show was killing and changing the world just like he wanted and now it was time to pick it up a bit. For a podcast it is one of the lightest in terms of production and I think GV is going to come back at us with a new Wine show, that is totally different from the WLTV format and maybe even on normal TV that is syndicated to a podcast. His current format is approximately 22-minutes and this is perfect for a half-hour show on Food TV or something with added commercials.

GV is smart and his ability to turn the wine library into what it is today shows that he is a smart business man too. Smart business men smell opportunity. I think WLTV is a great opportunity to take an established market, turn it on it’s head and bring it back to the people and make some serious dough… or is that grapes?

Or I could just be full of sh**.

Feeling a little anxious about all of this Gary. We are going to come up with some theories on your possible departure at a wine party Saturday night that was inspired by your program. We even have a collective “taste wine with Gary” segment. :)

Good show Gary. I always enjoy when you recommend new, value-priced wines for me to seek out.

QOTD: The viewers. After all it is we who make this show possible. Without us, it would just be you, drinking wine and talking with Mott.

GP, I totally agree with you He must have something in the works.
I also agree with you that ,if’n he does… he should podcast once in a while to stay connected to his roots. and also he may want to look over his shoulder cuz as I stated before Vaynerchuk we are ….always …watching you!

we know what you are doing right now!

This is MRS. Juicy Jesse. Listen up, GV: You’d better have a #*&% good reason for abandoning your Vaniacs – especially your #1 fan, my husband. He isn’t too happy if he doesn’t get his daily GV fix. And if Juicy isn’t happy, MRS. Juicy isn’t happy. Get it? And what’s going to happen to our Vaniac wine, hmm?

QOTD: Whatayaneed, homemade candy? Cookies? I’ll deliver them to you personally to keep Juicy happy. What???

Ok Gary, if you are calling it quits we have some loose ends to tie up
    1) Fly in guest Vayniac from Contest
    2) We get to see the pile of Thundercats you have collected, I sent one and I know I am not the only one, Ebay was screaming with familiar screen names from the forum
    3) Vayniac Cab taste along episode, It hasn’t shipped yet so it needs to be bottled in the next day and shipped express.
    4) I can’t believe you would be satisfied only batting 400
    5) I can’t believe there will be no episode highlighting the Vayniac fair coming in March.
    QOTD- see above
P.S. I f this is really the end how about some free shipping love on everything for old times sake?

After watching episode #58 again, I’m convinced you are going to TV. If they wanted you back in July 2006 they must be chomping at the bit to get you now. Way to go! With us and a little bit of you – and the Food Network (or is it the Travel channel?)- the wine world will change. At least we can all say we knew you back when you were a blogger.

    See you on TV.

    Araldite

Gary, I’m going to guess you’re going to Revision3. Anyway, I wish you would stop teasing us and just tell us what you’re doing. Seven more shows of this are going to be a turn off, at least for me.

QOTD: I can save WLTV, and so can every other Vayniac. All we need to do is continue to tune in, lurkers need to post comments, and most importantly not only tell a friend, but get a friend to sit down and watch with you so they can see how epic this show is. I’ve done it in the past and will continue to do it in the future. Long live WLTV.

  175. January 24, 2008

    CrazyManAndy

Well, that was the most depressing episode ever. Darn it Gary! This better be a publicity stunt!

QOTD: As others have said, to save it, you have to know what you need to save it from! So, what’s the deal? The show seems to have been going uphill from the beginning, and I haven’t seen any signs to the contrary. You’re really rainin’ on our parade here, GV!

So let’s see…perhaps “the Thunder Show” is being renamed? I do admire your clever promotion, which we’ll understand very soon I’m sure. #400 is going to be heavily watched I’m sure! BTW..if you need help with PR, give me a call ;)

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: I could save the show — indeed I could — but that would selfishly impose my will on the show, rather than letting it achieve according to its own free will. If the show will be saved, it must find the courage within to save itself, rather than rely upon some outside savior, some external messiah who rescues it despite its own motivations or lack thereof. It is a question of intrinsic value, of intrinsic worth, of intrinsic will to press on. At the end of it all, the show must decide for itself: do I exist from my own efforts, or rely upon external forces to determine my worth? Thus, if the show be saved by someone outside itself, then — ironically — it has already lost itself.

Have not posted anywhere as near as much as should do….
have a feeling if all of us who enjoy, respect and gain any sort of pleasure from what gary has offered to this comunity of wine drinkers, peolple who have discovered, found and now apreciate wine or even soley for entertainment value that this show provides, show their passion and love for what has been started by this show, we tofether can try and save winelibary tv.

My promise will be, as a faithful vayniac, to answer any QOTD, comment on every show from here on in and to try and get as many people as possible to realise the fun that wine can bring to your life.

That is to say as long as family, friends or loved ones dont come first, not even a 61 petrus could take me away from them. Have to admit it would be a close call though

Please carry on Gary, and who is with me?

So I flew to LA (from VA) on Wednesday, and what happens? I missed the show, it’s raining like crap, and the show if going kaput? Can’t I ever go anywhere anymore?………….[this is an early April fools joke. Right?]……………………otherwise, I’m bumned……big time.

GV- You leaving the Thunder Show is like Carson’s retirement. We really didn’t know what it meant, we just knew it was an end of an era. You should not close the door on the show, just put one of your proteges on and make an appearance from time to time…like Johnny did with Leno.

I just got into WLTV around Nov. I just got my wristband (thank you Gary, and yes I will send a pic), I just caught up watching all the archives, and I have told anyone who listen about the show, and I feel like I am just settling into being a Vayniac, and now my world has been torn apart. Well, maybe not torn apart but, damn, I just found out about WLTV and just like that it may be gone. I guess timing is everything. I have no idea how to save the show. All I know is that I comment on a regular basis, I signed up with facebook and became a friend of Gary’s, I told everyone I know about the show, I where the wristband everywhere hoping to meet other Vayniacs, I am trying new wines and really exploring different grapes, and I am hoping this will help save the show. I don’t know if it will or is enough or what you might be looking for but I hope so.

  185. January 24, 2008

    Gary,
You are our only hope. We heart the show, not Huckabee!
You are a straight shooter, like Ace Ventura. If you are getting tired, mix it up a bit. Conan O’Brian was tired, now he mixes it up!
    Go Tar Heels!

  186. January 24, 2008

Oh no, HGTV would be so mainstream! Besides we cancelled TV due to lack of interest. It almost makes you want to toss your wine down the drain–almost!

    Mark Exler

Gary….enough of the tease. I remember you saying at the end of 2007 that you wanted to change up the show in 2008. You indicated that there would be more guests, more discussion on food and wine pairings, etc. Maybe that’s what this is all about….you are merely preparing us for a change in the show’s format.

I for one, enjoy the show and try to watch every day. Being relatively new to the wine world, you have taught me a great deal and I want to learn more. Show me that I’m right and that you are just having some fun with all of us. Keep it going long after Episode #400!

  188. January 24, 2008

    Dr. G

Wow…while I only just found the show last week – if nothing else I’m glad I made it here in time for the ride. Kinda feels like tasting a really great wine only to discover the bottle you’re drinking is the last one in stock.

QOTD: I suppose we can save it (and we’ll jolly well have to) by living it…

  189. January 24, 2008

    Gary,

You cannot be serious!! I have been so turned on by WLTV in the 2 months that I’ve known about it. I have learned so much. I have spent hours talking to my 27 year old son about it (proud to say I introduced him to you). It has become part of my routine to watch your show, and I feel so much better about tasting wines myself. Plus, you are damn entertaining. I’ve already planned a visit to WL before next Thanksgiving, when I visit my parents, who live in Edison. I live in South Dakota now, damn it, I know you’ve got something up your sleeve. Good luck whatever it is, and I really do trust that you will not dessert all of us.

    Grapedigger

Well, you already have the support of 1000s of vayniacs, so it’s not a fan shortage problem. I know that taping the show 5 X per week could get tiring, especially after 2 yrs of doing that. If it’s just that you do not have the time, I suggest to tape just one 30 min episode each week where you taste 5 wines. This will keep the vayner nation alive … is it not what you want? Cheers

  191. January 24, 2008

    Adman

Got to believe that GV (if he is retiring from WLTV) is on to bigger things. He’s got too much energy and drive for him to quit now. I too believe that perhaps a regular TV show is in the offing – with the writer’s strike, everyone is looking for reality based, non-scripted shows. If that is not whats coming, then I would just say – Thanks for the best thing to hit the wine world in the last 20 years – and I’ll still shop at WL even without WLTV.

    gary,

i’m not really for sure why you want to stop, maybe for personal reasons, if so, i understand. i guess i just think that logically you don’t really have a reason to stop. you have a great fan base, this show is doing great things for the wine world in general, and i think if you really wanted to you could do something on tv. but, i guess it’s none of my business. hope these episodes go well, and i guess after that i hope whatever you do goes well. i will say this, i won’t learn as much about wine if you go. and i love learning. so…i’m kinda shocked right now…don’t know what to say

  197. January 24, 2008

stop playing. we watch everyday during dinner with a glass of vino. this is no way to break up. i’m calling your bluff. to save the show…i’ll keep trying new wines and loving my family.

Well I watched the episode early today and really enjoyed the tasting of wines/comparison to yesterday. This was truly a quality episode. Too bad there’s all hoopla about he show ending to detract from it.

GARY: it’s obvious that if you were to really end this show, somebody else is going to try and and do it in their own way. Maybe we’d end up with a whole bunch of “imitatiacs”. That would be a mistake for you and them. However, I don’t think the show will end. Your not that dumb, unless you have a major media gig lined up as some have suggested. Guess we’ll all just have to wait and see.

QOTD: Being a founding viewer (Episode 1), I’ve learned that there are many other great wines out there to try (besides the standard from Cali). I’ve also put to use things mentioned like opening up a bottle and letting it breathe before taking it to a restaurant. All the things I’ve learned I’ve passed on to family and friends so YES I CAN save the show!

  204. January 24, 2008

    QOTD:
How about a shirtless episode with Mott, that ought to shock an unsuspecting audience and wake things up!
Use a fancy set like Letterman with comfy guest chairs and drink from a coffee mug.
Try some new props like spitting in a plastic wading pool.
Send the wines you are trying to some viewers to do taste along episodes with you by web cam or phone.
Have a little piece on a different Vayniac to start each episode….bring the “Family” into the show.
Just keep doing what you are doing.

GV – For starters, Hope you are reading all the posts tonite. Collectively, the Vayniacs want to save the show. Why? Entertainment, education , fun, friendship, family (we are your extended family), changing the wine world. For wine lovers, You are our best web friend we have never met – we don’t want to loose that. You know, you always say that wine is the new “board game” for this era. bringing people together. I really think you are right. As such, not any one of us Vayniacs can save the show, we must all save it together, as we have been brought together by this show. How cool is that? You can’t walk away from that.

SO, a lot to think about tonite. How can we (the Vayniacs) save the show ??? We MUST save the show as this is far more fun & entertaining than pretty much anything on TV. Here’s my list of why the show must go on (assuming you aren’t just moving on to something bigger & better):

    1) We know your ultimate goal – to own the Jets. How are you going to do that with out increasing your popularity (which I am guessing translates into more sales @ WL – I know I try to buy from WL when I can because I think you are a great guy providing a great service & I want you to profit from it ). WLTV is booming – you can’t hang it up now – you will NEVER own the Jets unless WLTV (or something bigger & Better) rolls on. This is a mutually beneficial relationship. We get tons of knowledge about great wines that we probably otherwise wouldn’t have know about – which leads us to buy those wines from WL – which leads to more happiness in our lives (by experiencing great wines) -and the sales lead you closer to the purchase of the Jets. I know you joke about it , but this is America & living the dream is what this country is about. You, my friend, are living the dream. You can’t give up the dream & We Vayniacs are here to help you see the dream become reality.

    2) GV – do another Vayniac wine. Dude, I can hook you up to do a Vayniac GSM – don’t believe me? Challenge me & I WILL hook you up with world class fruit – send me an email – no BS – I have the connections. You can’t drop the Thunder Show while there is still a Vayniac wine in production. BTW – how can you drop the Thunder show with the Vayniac cab still in the barrels ?? Can’t do that – there must be some sort of rule against dropping out mid-project. There can’t be Vayniacs if there is no Thunder show & if there is no Vayniacs, there can’t be any Vayniac Cab.

    3) Do it for the kids …. seriously, do you know how many kids watch you with their parents? Look at some of the comments. Vayniacs, do your kids watch with you? Do they think GV is the coolest, most RADOOL dude on the net? – Post it up – let GV know. My daughter (age 11) watches with me every nite. They are the future of the wine world. You ARE changing the wine world already. This next generation won’t think like the past – they will be Vayniacs ….. but only if the show goes on.

    4) Changing the wine world – how can the wine world change if there is no one to lead the change? No WLTV – no change (assuming that there isn’t a bigger & better something on the horizon).

    5) Personality – GV, you have too much energy & enthusiasm to hang this up. YOU will not be happy if you aren’t doing this. I think you get as much or more emotionally out of the show as we Vayniacs do. You were born to do this. It is your destiny. Don’t deny it.

In all seriousness GV, I put this post together for fun – but that is what this show is all about. We all would truly miss you if this were the end.

    J Crazy

Geez Gary, I just hope this isn’t some BS like the ending to the Never Ending Story. You’ll be there in your cracking crystal tower saying, “MY NAME. SAY MY NAME J CRAZY. PLEEEEASE, SAY MY NAME VAYNIACS.” Then I’ll call you my mom’s name, my wife’s name, then my accountant’s name and in the end you’ll be like, “dude, my name’s GARY, you ass!” and then pass into oblivion. Or if it’s a rhetorical question like, “Can you save this child?” or “Can you save the Rain Forests?” and all us Vayniacs are nodding our heads like, “uh huh, that’s me, I can save it, here I goooo” then there may be futility in our efforts. But futile is never the cause to save something great. That’s why I propose for you to just change the name from “Winelibrary TV” to “Gourmet Library TV” or “Cheese and Wine For That Ass TV” or forget the first part and just “Ass TV”. I’m sure the Vayniacs would just ass soon be Assiacs. So, I say, destroy Wine Library TV and rise again, oh phoenix of glory, as “Gourmet Library TV” (Ass TV is pretty rad, too).
Or I can save the Winlib TV by doing it in Japanese from now on.

Yes! I placed a $500 order at Wine Library last week. I think my order and the 500 internet orders like it, will save WLTV.

I think this “6 More Shows” thing is another ego stroke like the episode where you said, “If I don’t get ### comments, the show is over”. I recognize it because my four year old, Max, does similar stuff for attention, and I too, do all kinds of crap to stroke my own go.

If the show is truly ending, I guess I will have an extra hour and a half per week of free time and I will probably go back to buying wine locally.

This is tough. Just started watching over the Christmas holiday – and have been averaging about 8 episodes a day since then.

Would be sad to see the show end, especially after all of the “2008 will be out best year ever!” comments – just hoping the WLTV crew ends up doing something they enjoy.

You’ll always have an audience here Gary.

One of three things are going on with this ‘end of the thunder show’ thing:

    1) Six show takes us right up to Superbowl weekend. The outcome of that game, either way, is a crushing blow for any Jets fan…he’ll come back on the following day depressed and declare that he won’t be able to ‘bring the thunder’, thus, the end of the thunder show.

    2) announcement of the apple tv setup sparks a new moniker for the show

    3) He’s announcing that he’s going on broadcast TV…Fine Living or Food Network….the next ‘Thirsty Traveler’ but with wristbands and action figures.

    My money’s on option 1

QOTD: How to save WLTV? Why not make some scratch and go to Itunes? Do it once a week for a half hour at 99 cents. Or why not switch to a written blog and have a weekly top 5 wines of the week? Gary’s wines of the week or grow a pair and do 400 more episodes for free.

  242. January 25, 2008

    KW

QOTD: Gary if you are wearing out on taping the shows, take WLTV to a weekly show! Then your fans will be eagerly anticipating your weekly reviews. But hold it to 30 mins or less since more than that can wear even your viewers out.

I didn’t think you could keep taping it on a daily basis for a prolonged time. And with your recent public exposure, I expect that other enticing options are presenting themselves…but don’t leave your fans out in the cold. You started a movement – you need to keep it going somehow.

  243. January 25, 2008

    Jai

It’s possible my math is off, but wouldn’t 6 more episodes mean you are stopping short of 400. How do you stop at 399? Sorry GV, I don’t buy that you done doing the show. Too many things don’t add up or make sense. All those ‘08 ambitions for the show: food pairing, more answered question, epic contest, plus that Canadian guy? Now suddenly 3 weeks in your done? Not too mention you reference big things for episode 400 now suddenly your done? Haha, funny.

So what you aren’t calling it the Thunder Show? Is that “retired”? Do you scare us by going black for a day? How about you just give me that Apple TV for figuring out your ruse.

QOTD: Can I? Sure why not. Me, myself, and I would love that show. I pick a few wines I know nothing about, give my “expert” opinion, while spouting obnoxious catchphrases nonstop. I could do that. Hey, wait, that sounds a lot like a show I already watch on the internets. I’m thinking you should just keep doing it instead and save me the trouble. I’ll be too busy celebrating a Pats victory anyway!!! Plus honestly, it’s safe to say you’ve probably forgotten more about wine than I’ll ever know. Plus the “Jainiacs” has absolutely no ring to it at all. What a sad day that would be… Welcome to Wine By Jai TV, I’m your host J-A-I… Gary, you need to save us all from THAT!!!

QOTD: All of your Vayniacs who will miss you dearly. And Mott. And Thundercats. And the greater possibility of owning the Jets if you can get more wine sales with WLTV. Or 1 show per week. Or having Apple endorse your show (seeing as you have a Macbook, Macs on the floor of the WL, an AppleTV, an iPhone, most likely an iPod….

QOTD: Nothing. The die has been cast and whatever’s going to happen will happen.

Any sort of major change short of going to a ‘real’ TV program will more likely lose viewers than gain.

As long as I can still get WLTV on my browser, fine. If it’s something lame like, “Mott got a real job, meet your new cameraman, Rico!”, my guess is new name, new format (guests, field trips, things requiring a budget), less frequent (weekly or twice-weekly shows), more structured, and probably more ad-based.

QOTD: What can I do? It shouldn’t matter what I can do. It is all of us including yourself. Remember, it is us with a little bit of you. We all understand you will always be doing your part in changing the wine world, being that is your job, but you are the motivation for a lot of us. But if you really want to know what I can do to help save the show, I will always continue to post comments and continue to turn my friends on to the show….assuming one still exists. And as soon as I get my wristband, I’ll send in a picture. All I can say is I hope you honor what you have told us over and over again about how the shows of 2008 will rule over all previous shows.

And if you require anything from us to continue, all you have to do is ask….I know you have a big enough following that would do anything on your command.

What do you mean “Save the Show”?? Yesterday you used the word “retirement” and now you’re talking about keeping it alive…? I mean…did you get cancelled? Has the writers’ strike finally made its way to WLTV? Or are you reformatting? I have to admit, I’m a conspiracy theorist and I don’t think you’re going anywhere. It’s not like you to just walk away. #400 will be the end of the show as we know it, and you’ve got something in mind for the future.

Gary I am usually not upset about your course of action with the show, however I thought of something that made me angry. The Canadian guy who won the contest to be the first vaniac on winelibrary tv, 1 was not first which got me a little upset, and 2 it looks like you are going to cancel the show without putting him on. What did he and all of the people who entered the contest enter it for then? Its like they not just him but everyone has been robed. I usually don’t get upset complain or judge, but I think that if you do cancel the show, the guy who won (who by the way is not me in case people think I am being biased) the contest should go on the show. Dude I comment almost every episode, some more comments then one, I sent in the picture of the wrist band, joined the forum. I believe in this, were all family and I just feel like that guy deserves to at least get what he won. Other then that, I love the show. It is the only show I watch tv or internet. I work a lot and don’t have a lot of time but I can always watch this show and its great. You, Mott, Eric, anti chris, darth vayner, your brother, and especially your dad and the rest of the crew, the people in the forums, and the people who leave comments, I love all of you guys, and if the show does go off the air I will never forget you any of you! Hmmm… lots of interesting thoughts up on these comments. I’m feelin’ the love from Alos– this does feel like a family.
I expect that GV has something up his sleeve; there are too many loose ends to tie up in 6 more shows (Canadian contest winner, food/cheese on the show, special guests, etc.). I don’t think he will completely stop. The show will go on in some form, perhaps in a more mainstream way.
But if it really is done, it has been fun and all good things must end at some point.

After reading the reviews, not much more can be said. The Apple option makes sense. On the other hand, I with Jai on calling out on your bluff. I just started watching a few short months ago and can’t stop referring WLTV to my customers at work (www.rillos.net). I am curious to know the reaction you are looking for from the Vayniacs to “save the show”? Is this some kind of loyalty check? If you retire, what kind of worthwhile activity will you replace The Thunder Show with? You like wine culture too much to give prior to established goals.

QOTD: Ok… ideas to explore… How about wine tasting in different countries with locals and identify with the culture on how they like to enjoy wine, (that family emphasis that is constantly mentioned). Bring more guests on your show and have in-house shows at Vayniac residences. Or host tasting’s with other respected experts and compare notes.

    Go Giants…

Nothing ain’t goin’ nowhere! Don’t get your twitches in a gidget. Vaynerchuck is a master marketer. He needs to reinvent and shake things up. We gotta be ready to roll the way Gary needs to roll. It will be a ride worth taking as long as we don’t take ourselves or him too seriously.

  272. January 25, 2008

    Garret W. Nagle

    Gary,

You will always be known for your role in online “web 2.0″ marketing successes – you are definitely at least an “early adopter” or as much as an innovator.

How can WLTV be improved? You will have to ask yourself if you wish to continue to position WLTV as a “house organ” for the Wine Library, or develop it into an independent and objective voice for “changing the wine world” as a sort of ambassador. Is it more important for you to translate your efforts into increased revenue at the WL, or is it more important for you to get your message across?

If you were to do TV, which you have shunned in the past, you would probably have to review wines that are not sourced from the WL to maintain a level of objectivity – however, I don’t know that you are driven to be a journalist.

This being said, I think your messages have come across well in the media, despite your openly stated interest in promoting the success of the WL – which is fine. I only think that you might have more options for new show format ideas and reach more people if you are independent from the WL .

Either way, my main recommendation for you is to hire a sort of video blog producer that can do a lot of your “grunt work.” A producer would assist you in developing editorial content planned out months in advance, assist in the compilation of more educational content, and perhaps allow you to expand the sphere of influence of your show.

Rather than just relying on live tastings to drive the show, what if your audience tuned in to hear weekly wine industry news? Perhaps a producer could also coordinate special shows in different wine regions to give your audience wine travel destination ideas?

Finally, perhaps your show could be produced weekly rather than daily?

Whatever happens, it seems to me that you enjoy the spotlight too much to pull back, and I expect you to make some kind of decision about what to do with your platform NEXT. You are certainly a beneficial ambassador or PR advocate for the wine industry, whether the industry understands it or not.

I look forward to your future endeavors!

Smoke and mirrors, smoke and mirrors! How can they have a big “celebration” for all the fans in March if there is no show to get the word out? And, don’t forget about the Vayniac cab! Without a show there is no way to sell that wine! Of course, if the show really does need saving, we should all try to put in our two cents. I say we all send in one dollar (that dollar made payable to some charitable organization). Then Gary might have a truer sense of all the good his show can do.

But, Gary, please: enough with the theatrics. We need you here, brother. And, I’m pretty sure you need us as well. Stick around – seriously. We still haven’t found a dynamite bottle of Petite Verdot together.

Dude. I still call shenanigans and BS on your claim that you’re ending the show, but that doesn’t mean I won’t humor you by answering the QOTD as always!

QOTD: Yes. With my unstoppable capability to speak to the masses (a.k.a. my friends and everyone with whom I come in contact and serve each night at the restaurant & wine bar where I work) and spread our shared view of the importance of tossing preconceived notions to the wind, COMPLETELY AVOIDING the plague-like tendency of wine drinkers to become pretentious and snootier with each learned piece of wine knowledge, and to ALWAYS explore NEW THINGS in the wine world while enjoying it as an artistic, cultural, historic, yet always changing and evolving …thing (sub: beverage, product, conversation piece, food pairing, social aid to bring people together, etc.). I will continue to amplify and spread the message and passion we share about what we believe the wine world should be until all wine drinkers are on board… and somehow that will save WLTV.

And most importantly, there are soooooo many wines and regions that you haven’t done yet. At least do another 200 episodes so you really get to cover the whole world of wine.

QOTD: Only the LURKERS can save the show. Gary has said it before. So here is my part. I’m less of a lurker. LONG LIVE THE THUNDER SHOW!!! (Hey, maybe that’s the new name!)

  297. January 25, 2008

    Kruszcontrol

Hey Gary, I already HAVE saved the show. You see, months ago I emailed you and asked when you were going to do a show on mead and you said it was coming. So you clearly can’t end the show without doing one on mead because you said you would, and I just don’t feel it coming in the next 6 days because you have so much other stuff to do. Check and mate, Gary.

  298. January 25, 2008

    Sassodoro

Gary, I don’t know whether to believe you or not. You might be serious, or you might be playing with us, perhaps trying to draw out lurkers or leading up to a name change for the show (so the “Thunder Show” is going away). If you are playing with us, a lot of Vayniacs are going to be very annoyed.

You know you love doing this, and you know that we love you doing this. So what gives? Has it all become too much to manage? If so, how can we help? (That’s an offer, not a rhetorical question.)

  299. January 25, 2008

    purplejuicebruce

Way too much drama, all will be revealed soon. My money says GV wont be going anywhere, there is just too much wine that needs to be tasted. It’s a tough job I know but you signed up for it so MAN UP and give it a snify snif.

QOTD: Is the Thunder show the only thing going away and GV is bringing another kind of show.. Maybe the Radool show?

  301. January 25, 2008

    bruce gardner

Why is the show ending? Its one of the top reasons i buy from winelibrary. I think if the show ended i would buy alot less wine from here. So whatever we can do to save the show……shoot!!

  302. January 25, 2008

    CB

It won’t be going anywhere. How else could Gary release all this energy that he has, and also, he is just starting to make it big…he has been on Conan, Ellen, Nightline, NPR, and probably much more….You just can’t do it man….you’re to committed to us. Also, if you leave we won’t be changing the wine world…Peace

  303. January 25, 2008

    Ricky B.

QOTD- How about doing it 2-3 times a week instead of every week day? You can’t stop now there is still much work to be done.

  304. January 25, 2008

    BryanJ

QOTD: Don’t know. But I’m really bummed if WLTV is going away completely. I’m new to wine and have learned a lot from GV- my wife and I watch most every day. We often get too wrapped up in work and kids and life in general- the show has provided a common ground for us to enjoy together (once the kids go to bed). Gary’s enthusiasm and passion for wine (and life) has helped to reveal a whole world of wine enjoyment for us. No more Yellowtail. I hope we’ll all continue to see Gary in some format- TV?. If not- thanks for getting us started. Best of luck.

  305. January 25, 2008

Show closing down? Too rigerous of a schedule? Not enough love coming your way? Go ahead shut her down, who needs you? The king is dead! One less competitor in the field.

Did I just say that? Hey, Gar, just kidding! We would miss you your daily rants and advise. But as most comments say, no one is buying it. I do believe this format needs some buffing up. Doing this daily takes the edge off of you at some point. I still stick with my earlier comments when you asked the QOTD around Christmas time, “what do you see for WLTV in 2008?” I see a change in format to inclusive of food, different venue(s), down to 2-3 times a week, plus a separate recommendation list available to loyal WLTV viewers.

Maybe Gary’s moving to Seattle, WA.

Show will change, be ‘owned’ by AppleTV, but go forward in different form.

  307. January 25, 2008

    John E Lovasz

This is total BS. If the show is ending, I think you owe your loyal viewers an explanation. Thousands of people spend 15 to 25 minutes a day, 5 days a week, watching you. That is no small commitment. Many of these same viewers have become patrons of your business, putting money in your pocket. Then, out of the blue, you let it “slip” that there are only 7 shows left, with no explanation, leaving many of us scratching our heads. Frankly, you are disrespecting your viewers by acting this way. You want lurkers to leave comments; you constantly beg people to “friend me up.” Then, you turn around and act in a way no true “friend” would act. If the show is ending, just say so–and WHY. If Mott is leaving, just say so. If you’re merely planning changes to the show, just say so. If this is just a way to get people to pay more attention to you or to lavish you with praise and thanks, then you have succeeded. But, please, enough of this coy crap.

Just a thought about the “re-taste: The Torbreck Run Rig may have changed less because it is such a powerful and intense wine. Put another way, this wine may take even more time for the aeration to show the same effect as the Achaval Ferrer Mirador showed.

QOTD: Only you can prevent forest fires (termination)!!

  309. January 25, 2008

    Rob P

If the show were truly ending Gary would have given an emotional speech about how much it has meant to him and how much he will miss it and most importantly…why he is leaving. I would expect tears and sadness…TO style. This is clearly a setup of some sort. At the very least it will be entertaining to see what happens. Some people didn’t like the Vayniac Cab build up, but I think most people would admit that it was at least entertaining and interesting to speculate on what the countdown was for. The next two weeks should be fun.

  310. January 25, 2008

    NC Carl

The only person who can save the show is Gary V. It’s my hope that with the props from all these comments we can make Gary feel bad enough to stay on.

Does anyone remember when Jim Rome was going to take on a TV show and drop his radio show? He got so much reinforcement from fans that he actually decided to do both, keep the radio show and do TV. (I’m not even sure he’s doing both now, that seems like years ago)

The fans need that 15-20 min. of Gary webcasted!

  311. January 25, 2008

    GalvezGuy

Gary, I know that the concept is not going away. It is obvious to us watching out here that you truly enjoy your role in informing and educating in a way that removes some of the stigma associated with wine reviews. I am just curious where this is going, maybe guest hosts like Johnny Carson.

Distributors, wineries, and anyone else giving you flack about panned wines need to give you better product. I have seen you pan a few wines I really enjoy, I did not stop liking them because of your opinion, I just chalk it up to a difference in opinion. I have tasted a few of your Vayner-Steals and some I loved and some I was a little – meh.

Anyway, if you do decide to truly end the show. Thanks for creating something very special and making it fun.

I’ll save the show. How ’bout PLEASE.

What can be done in a portal message? A request, a plea to continue the thunder show? Sure. More comments? certainly. Thunder cats? okay. Name it, Gary. It’s a dangerous question to an audience that likely been drinking.

What about a weekly show rather than a daily one?

  314. January 25, 2008

we all know this is just some stupid weirdo gary thing… im sure it is not the end so lets just wait till we see.. hey gary … this is a wine blog.. not 24 or lost, where you have to keep us in suspense next week shows…. who do u think you are? aarron spelling or jj abrahms?

Do we need to have a little talk with Lizzy? Wazzzz Upp? You can’t do this to us. Listen to all this love being thrown around. There is nothing like this. Please, Please, Please, as my four year old daughter sais, she, by the way is a huge fan and watches with her eight year old brother every night. What will become of the next generation of vaniacs. Whatever happens, you have touched all of our hearts, and brought families and couples closer together. God, I’m getting all teared up over here. I love you man.

“Over? Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! It ain’t over now, ’cause when the going gets tough….” Maybe Bluto Blutarski can save the Thunder Show.

Gary, stop playing with our emotions. Vayniacs need love too.

What about all those promises for 08 like bringing food into the Thunder Show more often?

    No more show.

I think all this fame has gone to his head.
But I’m also sure that the store sales and managment is keeping way to busy to bring The THUNDER everyday.

Maybe someone will come along and start a New Web Show and call it
    “BEYOND THE THUNDER”

GV, Enjoy your Store…you’ll miss us.

    Gary,

You are such a TEASE! You love to YANKY-YANK our chains! Only YOU can save the show by going beyond 400 episodes. But if you cold turkey us, we know where you work!!!!!

  321. January 25, 2008

    The Fanjestic

I Got an e-mail from Gary titled “O MY GOD u got it!” Then in the e-mail it said: “Now how do u get the rest of the vayniacs too follow u and make it
    happen!”

Below is what I typed in the notes. This has to have been a mass e-mail and Gary is messing with us. Obviously Aquaman isn’t going to save the show – or is he…….Super Friends Unite!!!!!!!

    Previous Post:

    QotD: Aquaman?

I am very interested where this is going. Either the show is changing to something else, or Gary has a really mean sense of humor and the show will go on.

Must the Vayniacs bleed burgundy to show our alliance?!?!?!?

  322. January 25, 2008

    MtnCharlie

QOTD: Already doing it. Leaving comments, spreading the word about WLTV, sharing my love of wine with others, trying new wines with friends and family, doing my part to break down the sigma of wine snobbery.

    Can’t wait to see what’s next…

  323. January 25, 2008

    R M Kriete

He’s gonna change the show….in the future, he will always have a different New York Jet player as a co-host….he doesn’t need to worry that they won’t be available this time of year…..it’s not like the Jets are ever in the Super Bowl!

  324. January 25, 2008

Gary, your show is so amazing (in spite of comments from some of the Vaniacs that really need to get a life). We all have learned to love wine even more and respect, yes respect, our own palates and choices. Your job is not done, nore will it ever be, as more and more of us find you and learn to love you and learn to love the different wines you have introduced. For the sake of the Vaniacs and the industry, keep on keepin’ on.

Did you say the wine was showing a little more “cleve”? Hahaha…
The gum was Freshen-Up.. and I was JUST talkning about it! Thought it would be good to have a wine-gum that did that!!!

QOTD: Why does the show need saving?! Seems pretty great to me..and many many others. I think Gary has another plan in mind… We can ALL save the show..lets go mainstream!!

  332. January 25, 2008

    Kim Schroeder

QOTD: Still think you are moving to TV and “Who Can Save The Show” refers to someone as entertaining as you to step in and take over the daily tastings on the Thunder Show – impossible Gary V nobody can replace you. See you on TV :) .

I was just watching some past episodes including Jason Hicks’ episode #125 and that got me thinking. . .

    Retiring?

I think that we would all agree to let you cut down a bit if you simply need a rest. Feel free to check with the Board of Directors on this PRIOR to making any rash decisions.

You now have a following of “addicts” that you cannot simply throw out cold-turkey.

    This is your responsibility.

Cool experiment. I would have thought 24 hours open would have ruined a wine. I’m going to have to try this; with a lot less expensive wines of course!

There’s gotta be a lot of advertisers that would support the show or maybe a WLTV “Wine of the Month” Club? I know it’s not about lack of viewers, you got the Vaynerchuck Army ready to march with this whole 6 more shows business? Somebody puttin’ the squeeze on you to shut down? NADINE ANTOUN

Well, the final decision all comes to you and your corporation, perhaps the airing of wine library has become to costly, whatever the reason, you are Gary Vaynerchuck and despite the things or obstacles that are surrounding you, it is not a good enough reason for you to quit a show where you have come so far and gone and come to a point where you 1st of all love / passionate to do and 2nd of all, I wouldn’t see anybody else do it, I got used to seeing you air on Wine Library and because of your show, I have learned much more about wines and keep learning about them than I ever thought of learning. The Vayniacs nations begs you not to quit, the other specialists are boring and your not :) You have your own style, your differentiating yourself so much from competitors which gives such an added advantage in terms of market positioning. Hire and assistant like your father to do a couple of shows for yeah if you would like to spend more time at home. Your shows with your father are great, I watch the show regularly or when I can or I missed them I catch up and leave comments most of the time. Well, I hope this little word of motivation with a touch of sentiment will change your mind, keep it up Gary !! And of course keep wine library tv kicking !!! :)

    Mr.Sato

I’m going to jump on John’s bandwagon (see below). I’ve been a “Vayniac” for a good while now and quite frankly, I’m starting to be turned off by some things. Like, you say you answer all emails, but I have sent several, and questions via the “ask Gary app”, and done everything you ask, including comment on nearly every episode, but I have not had a single response. It appears to me that the people who get responses are either “somebody” (like wine bloggers who have a following, or are involved in wine making, or someone in general who might be able to increase viewership for you), and when those people are answered, then as many other random people as you feel like. Either way, if I do choose to continue to watch… assuming there are any more shows – which I’m sure there will be, I guess I’ll stop wasting my time and become a lurker again. Oh, and despite following every instruction I never got a wristband. Consider me disgruntled. LOL BTW, my 5 year old daughter likes to watch our show and thinks you’re cute. Not that you’ll read this anyway. Maybe the show SHOULD end, since the show may have gone to your head.

    John E Lovasz’s comment:

Kept wondering what the topic of the show would be today…then kept remembering you said it was going to end next week…then hoped for a while that it was just one of your jokes…then the process repeated itself.
And that was the majority of my day.
    And I’m still hoping it’s a joke!

  366. January 25, 2008

    obrianksu

You could bring more food into the show as you mentioned at the beginning of the year. Have a list of wines online that viewers can choose from for you to try one day a week. The most voted two or three wines get tasted that next day. Quiz vayniacs on wine related questions. Have more guests to give more opinions on wines whether a novice or experienced wine drinker. I don’t know if ideas are what you are looking for but there are so many reasons why you should keep on truckin. Whether you retire or stay it has been a blast.
    Thanks Gary,

    P.S. Do you read these?

Is this about getting more people to host the show so it’s not all about you? Well, it is all about you and your gift to get more people drinking wine. And since it is about you, YOU are the one who will save the show, even after you have your own network on prime time TV!!!

Wow – you sure know how to piss a bunch of people off! Maybe its because they don’t appreciate having their heads messed with. I for one was drinking wine before I found your show and I’m pretty sure I can continue to “trust my own palate”, as you always say, long after the show is gone.

QOTD – what can I do to save the Thunder Show? Only caution you to stop f-ing with your loyal fans GV, and come clean. Otherwise there will be no one left to watch whatever you have up your sleeve next.

Simply put – don’t go! Hopefully this is just more of those “Jersey scare tactics” you’ve shown us before.

I wouldn’t have sampled a Greco di Tufo, Torrontes or Grower’s Champagne without the WLTV insights you’ve provided.

Take a vacation if you need it but don’t forget about the WLTV faithful! I feel like a zealot converting everyone I know with an interest in wine into faithful Vayniacs and WLTV viewers!

There are still so many guests who need to make an appearance there’s no way you can quit before you hit 1,000 shows…

Thanks for keeping us on our toes and becoming a part of our lives.

QOTD – Who can save WLTV? A little bit of us and a whole lotta YOU!

Man, some people in your fan base are down right nasty with the prospect of losing the show. Gary you don’t owe us anything (if anything it is the other way around), it is a free country and you can quit if you want to, that is what makes this country great.

However, WE owe YOU a huge thanks for doing the show without charging anyone a dime for it. The education about wine that all of us have gained was (and hopefully still will be) priceless. Through all of the thousands of comments you receive we rarely stop and say thanks for all that you are doing, so let me offer a huge THANKS!!!

Gary….must say even though it has only been about 5 or 6 months of solid viewing you have already changed my wine world. If you must go then that is what was meant to be, but I have the luxury that I have saved every episode of WLTV available to me from your site so I can view them over and over.

QOTD: We will always have wine and our own palates, but it is you who is truly what WLTV is all about. The energy, the exposure, the knowledge……that is what we enjoy.

OK: GeeVee, what can I do to help? I’ve been thinking of creating some theme music for your show … will that help? Maybe different folks can video themselves tasting three or four wines in your honor, in your stead, in your manner, and you can still offer one episode a week, with some favorites you want to tell us about. Don’t leave us! WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!!!

Why does WLTV need saving? What’s wrong? I don’t get it. Look, Gary, you can save the show if you want, or not. It’s your choice. But since you asked our opinion, here goes.. SUCK IT UP. You sound like someone told you something and now you just want to end a good relationship for no reason. Don’t. There is no reason, especially philosophical, to end the show. Most people, I imagine, don’t buy the wines you rate. They’re here because they’re interested in wine, but can’t afford to drink every day. We watch mostly because of your energy and passion. That’s what keeps us coming back. Bottom line is this, if you leave, the wine world stays the same. We believe in your cause, and want the wine world to change too. So, SUCK IT UP and stay.

No more Thunder Show??? That’s just not right. Think of the kids, Gary!

QOTD: The answer to the question of how to save the Thunder Show really depends what’s motivating this abrupt end in Wine Library TV. Feeling over-extended? Perhaps 5-days a week could be scaled back a bit. I’m sure all the Vayniacs out there would miss getting their daily fix, but I’d rather have fewer episodes a week than have no show at all…

I hope the show isn’t ending. If all of this is because of the post on Craig Camp’s blog then here’s the response I posted on his blog. Hope this helps you decide against ending the show.

    ———————————

I liked that 60 second opinion on WineLibraryTV. I also like the way you’re using this to get exposure for your book which is conveniently highlighted on the side of this entry (at least, that’s what I’m getting after reading this one blog post :) .

There’s obviously nothing wrong with that, but it does point out the fact that everyone is trying to sell something by bringing anything to the masses. It doesn’t even have to be a material thing, it could just be you selling yourself. With that being the case, I’m not sure why you would even bring that up as if it were a fault. It’s just normal and we’ve all come to realize that already.

The fact of the matter is, Gary has gotten a lot of people into wine with his show. You don’t have to like rating systems, but the majority of people in the U.S. don’t have the luxury of having a lot of disposable income available to try a bunch of different wines (or anything else, for that matter). The rating system helps people better spend their money on whatever it is that’s being rated. The point of the system isn’t to cause you to form an opinion after looking at how one guy rates something, but to look at trends. Everybody seemed to like that, so MAYBE I will too. It’s at least worth spending a little money on to see.

It’s worth noting that you aren’t going to like something just because lot’s of other people liked it. What it does do though, is help you make a more educated decision when spending your money. That’s part of why we rate everything else (e.g. movies, pizza, burgers, cows, music, blog posts…).

It could also be argued that the ratings make it so that people don’t try underrated stuff or even unrated stuff. I agree, that’s sad. But that’s how it goes when you don’t have the disposable income to go around trying every bottle of wine (every pizza place, every movie) you can find.

Anyway, GaryV has obviously helped the wine community and wine makers as a whole phenomenally, and I, for one, hope the show continues as it is, long into the future.

    That’s my 60 second opinion.

P.S. And yes, this is posted somewhat anonymously: the only possible way you can put out anything for the masses without selling something. I say “possible” because it’s still likely you’re out to sell something, an idea, for instance. Just showing how bad the argument of selling something is…

If it is something else then get a grip and keep it going. Yeah, I haven’t watched the show in awhile, but I am back into it and posting as you request (under different names now and then). I have sent links out to a lot of friends in the past including serious wine guilds that make their own wine and consume a lot of commmercial wine. I promote you and love what you are doing for the wine world and I think you are being monetarily rewarded in the long run. Sure I haven’t bought any wine from you yet, but I will. Still waitning for a huge review of Tannat (Madiran and Uruguay) comparison. Yeah, I have seen the episode of your Tannat review and it was good. Love the score sheet that can be searched and pinpoint what I am after in a wine at the time. Great resource and I use it a lot. Do a Madiran / Tannat show before you leave it you do decide to leave. We will miss you if you do. The wine world will never be the same without you. Great stuff you are doing. No one else compares or has the passion. I hope you reconsider. I know it is a huge investment of time and energy. You have exceeded expectations and whether you quit or continue you have contributed greatly to the world of wine. Thank you for all you do.

What’s the fuss about ending the show, man?
You are not going to end the show. This is not like Seinfeld where you want to go out on top. You have more work to do. You need to bring more people into the reality of wine drinking for the average Joe.

You make it sound like you are going to join the staff of Wine Spectator and talk with the rich and famous Chateua owners and make us all realize that we can’t afford their juice anyway.

How can I save the show? By telling you that you have found your “calling”. You are a preacher to convert the people to an elegant, respectable, way to enjoy wine and life.

    Rock on GV!

  420. January 26, 2008

    GV,

Seriously love the show, and don’t want it to end, but if the issue is that you don’t want to unintentionally represent some sort authoritative view on the way in which we should appreciate and interpret wines, then maybe an interesting new project for the VAYNERNATION would be to start a “wine you tube,” and invite people to post up their own tastings.

Promise not to be angry. 200+ episode lurker, first comment. (In my defense, I’m often pretty far behind on episodes and it feels weird to be posting weeks after the fact). Anyway, I hope you’re bluffing because WLTV does the community a great service by expanding horizons and changing peoples’ outlooks on wine. Personally, I’ve tried at least 10 new varietals that I never would have heard of without WLTV, many of which I enjoyed greatly.

I spent quite a while this weekend catching up on every episode since christmas. This year, I’ll resolve to do a better job of keeping up and actually posting comments if you promise to keep making episodes.

That was my first thought after thinking that WLTV is moving to iTunes. If that is the case that it would be a shame and I would hope GV would let us get involved on behalf of WL.

As for purchasing wine – while I am an admitted newbie and learn a lot from GV’s comments, I don’t buy a wine because HE says it is good. But I use his comments based upon my likes/dislikes.

Gary, you haven’t told us WHY you are quitting, and that’s what is causing some of the consternation. On the other hand, you don’t need to give a reason — it’s your call. And of course, something may be going on that makes it impossible for you to continue the show. We are all hoping that your reasons are simply a matter of preference and convenience rather than a serious crisis.

We are all throwing out guesses. Mine is pretty simple: you’re suffering from burnout, and an ever-growing realization of just how much time this show has absorbed.

I did a daily blog for over a year and began to realize that it was an unacceptable drain on my time. And it stopped being fun. But instead of bagging it altogether, I decided to drop back to doing one post a week.

Going to that once-a-week format made a huge difference to me. I immediately began to look forward to blogging again, and I no longer feel like it’s taking up too big a slice of my time.

I love your show, and I’m not alone. I hope you don’t quit forever. Take some time off, take a vacation for a month, or even a year — but we are all pulling for you to return when you are ready to do so. Perhaps you may consider going to a once-a-week format. I think you’d find that it would give you a huge amount of stress relief without giving up the aspects of the show that you love.

I get together with friends for a weekly potluck dinner. Great food, and always some wine. We all talk about you and your show so much that it’s almost like we set an extra plate out for you. You’re right: it’s all about sharing friendship.

QOTD – well, I was on vacation last week, and come home to this shocking development… Hoping it is a ruse…

Don’t be stupid Gary, you can’t quit the show. Its just getting big and your wine sales will fall.

QOTD: It would be nice to make WLTV a more two-way conversation about wine.

You could send us all free wine and then we’ll post our thoughts on it when you taste it on the new WLTV. Perfect!

This is a great episode, GV. Thanks for showing me how wines behave in the decanter vs. the bottle after 24 hours.

Well we didn’t quite make it to 500 comments, but I am glad you are extending the show. Great stuff on tasting many hours later for these wine. Thanks for hanging in there and keep doing the show.

QOTD: we can all save the show by telling our friends how much fun it is to watch and how instructional. If we boost your viewership you HAVE to stay on ;)

You’ve gotten to 500. I’m sure on episode 1000 you’ll be like “Oh, I can’t believe we made it this far.” WLTV will be fine.

Interesting show. I would have thought for sure the decanted wine would have have better nose/taste. QOTD: Well I already know it was some sort of ruse, so to any future threats of quitting… I WILL REMAIN A LOYAL VANIYAC FOREVER!!!
