Hooray! We love you Gary V. So glad that you’re continuing the show! This has been one of the best things for me as I discover my way into the wine world. It has definitely played a part in bring me closer with my dad and I thank you for that and for everything that you do. I know it’s a lot of work and I think we all appreciate that you keep doing it… even the lurkers (I know ’cause I used to be one).

QOTD: raised $5000 with some childhood friends in memory of one of our friend’s fathers, and we ran a half marathon together (first time for most of us). Good times, although the lack of wine drank that weekend b/c of the approaching race day was a bit depressing..

QOTD- History of the Southwest in college, it was a field trip that turned into one of the greatest experiences of my life. And I wound up with a whole new family of friends that I am still close with today 15 years later.
Gary, thanks for all you do. I can’t say how much I appreciate all I have learned from the show. Not just about wine, but the way I look at alot of things. Thank you. WLTV RULES !!!!!

I had a feeling you were Brett Favrering us. Great to have you back in an extreamly informative show. Man, I wish I could get a hold of more Italian wines that aren’t sangiovese based. Everything is Chianti, Chianti, here in Wisconsin.

Glad to hear that you’re continuing the thunder. My heart sank when I thought you might not do the show anymore. I’m going to have to go and drink some gosh darn wine with my friends and family now.

    GV,

I can’t express my happiness in knowing the show will continue (the show must go on)! However, if you ever do decide to stop or slow the thunder I want you to know I am 100% behind you with any future endeavor and one way or another myself and the other Vayniacs will be right behind you keeping the beat.

    QOTD –

Welcome back GV… if you need some help with the show you can always reach out to me.

    QOTD: I’ve got 2 radool non-family things.

    1) Saling holiday with my friends. We rented 2 sail boats for 10 days and we sailed it ourselves. We slept, cooked and partied on the boat. Visited many islands and met many other people along the way. We’ve done this trip twice and i can’t wait to do it again.

    2) NJ shore baby! Our group of friends are very close. We all would go down together to the shore and hang together. I looked forward to the big saturday BBQ we threw togehter and of course the sangria. Our shore house getaways is what got me started on my sangria quest.

QOTD- When I 14 and away at summer camp, the entire camp played a ginormus game of capture the flag. There were somewhere around 400 people trying to capture 10 different flags on two teams. (200 per team, 5 opposing flags- following me here?)

Yours truly captured the deciding flag. I’m 38, and outside of family that is still the greatest thing I’ve ever done.

Woo Hoo, but Gary V is still going to do his thing!

I think a lot of champagne corks just popped. I’m definitely trying that Martinelli, I’m ALL about having my mouth sucked in to a void of dryness.
QOTD: inviting a bunch of people to stay at my place in Paris when they’re doing their whole euro trip thang. Inversely, my place in ny for those america-loving frenchies.

QOTD: Well I would have to say the best non family thing I have ever done was build lasting friendships with some of the most important people in my life. Friends that have your back, friends that pick you up when you are down, friends that you would give your life to protect. Building those lasting relationships with at first complete strangers. I would say isn’t the best thing, but the best GIFT I have ever recieved.

ps. I’m happy that you have decided to continue the Thunder Show. I do enjoy our 20 minutes together everyday :) However this thing is only going to get bigger. I would say get yourself an assistant (where do I fax my resume?)! GV doesn’t have to answer every single question :)

  44. January 25, 2008

    Candace

Ah, Gary (and Mott), you make me happy. E veramente quando fate i vini itialiani che, secondo me, sono i più buoni. Right after I graduated college I moved to Italy, worked at a wine bar, learned Italian, partied, met amazing people and drank a ton of wine.

QOTD: Great is a big word. Probably the greatest things I’ve ever done in my life are the things that scared me the most. My first day trading in the Bond Pit at the Chicago Board of Trade comes to mind – there are very few women who can recall that experience. Skiing out of bounds on a powder day to go from Deer Valley to Park City Utah, down an untouched face and past two ski patrol guys at the bottom, then hearing the detonations of the anti-avalanche explosives behind me and my husband. That was great!

  49. January 25, 2008

    Micha

Yeah! really glad that you continue Gary! And this Episode is a great example why. There is so much to discover in the (wine)world…

Other than watching wltv every day, you mean? I’d have to say, coming out of the lurker closet. I wasn’t in there for very long, but it sure is great to be free!

    TerenceF

I don’t know if this makes any sense, but although I thought you were serious about ending the show, I ALSO knew, really knew, you would change your mind. I’ve been watching since Alex and Kevin first mentioned you on Diggnation, and I’m just now turning 21, so you have been like my wine mentor, leading me into the wonderful world of wine and starting this new hobby off the RIGHT way and showing me how to be friends with my palette and follow it where ever it leads me. Keep it up, Gary V, keep dropping the knowledge and bringing the thunder and we will take care of the love.

    Forgot about the QOTD:

Every year for about the past 13 years (ironic I know) I volunteer at a Haunted House. Never get paid and do it just cuz it’s my nature to help people out. That might be a lame answer but it is the best I can do right now haha

  54. January 25, 2008

    Taylor

Great show unfortunately I haven’t had a Sagrantino, but ever today would be willing splurge and buy one.
QOTD Every year all my friends from school and I pick a weekend go skiing and meet up it’s so nice to see everyone and where they’re at and how their family is.

WLTV is one of my guiltiest pleasures even if I have no time for anything, if I see a new episode I’ll stop what I am doing and sit down the 20 minutes and watch glued to the screen I LOVE IT!!

  55. January 25, 2008

Thrilled to hear you’re sticking with the show! Great news. (Thanks for the shout out!)

QOTD: Best thing outside of family? Really the friends I’ve made. Many great trips & memories.

QOTD – My bachelor party was the most fun I have had, not withstanding family stuff!

Flew out of Vancouver to London and met a good buddy who was getting his masters degree at the London School of Economics. Took the train up to St Andrew’s and spent five days playing golf in the morning, napping in the afternoon and then partying with the locals at night. I got the opportunity to play the Old Course on our last day. All I wanted to do was shoot under 100 for the day and I got my wish coming in with a 98.

It was one of those trips that you can tell your grandchildren about.

The memory of it still makes me smile, even six years later.

Going skydiving was one of the best experiences I have ever had.

    Gary,

Sagrantino, eh? Hm, going to have to “seek it out.”

The funny thing about the SF Chron article is that when I introduce people to this show, I always say how much I’m learning and that Gary just makes me happy. Dunno why, I could be having a crappy, poopy day…log on and I have a smile on my face. :)

I know that this show takes a lot of energy and time to produce. I’m grateful and appreciate the time it takes to do this show. I think a once a week show would be just as great! Something to consider.

Sagrantino is fantastic! Italy is so much more than Chianti!

  60. January 25, 2008

    Kinglurker

First of all thank you gary… Yeah when break up with us without a good reason. No reason to quit a good thing. Everything in moderation

QOTD: Building a house is the most gradifying thing a person can do. Giving shelter to someone :)

Thank you thank you once again.. Do an episode on you daily life??…. maybe?

    Hey Gary,

Very glad you are continuing to bring on the thunder!! I just watched that episode where Ian Dorin said he would be the new host of WLTV. I almost wanted to stop the video, not that he isn’t a good but, but he didn’t bring on the thunder like you do. Like a lot of people I didn’t think you would end the show, but maybe pass it on to someone else. Needless to say, I’m happy you are staying on and look forward to WLTV for episodes to come!!!

    late-start

wow, big show today. will need to try some Sangrantino.

As for the QOTD, very tuff and really not sure. Depends on how one looks at things. Possibly could be becoming a doctor; but will need to think about it some more.

good to have you back at least for a while!

  64. January 25, 2008

So happy you are making a come back!!!! YOU ARE FABULOUS!!! You need us as much as we need you and your graditude shows that in soooo many ways!!! and DAMIT you should feel humble but at the same time we are the fortunate ones to have you giving your all to us!!!

QOTD: Beginning a part time job selling wine…it has opened up more doors than I could ever imagined!! Striving to wanting to make it a full time profession!! and you encouraging and educating me along the way!!!

20 minutes a day makes a difference in every vaniyacs life!!!

  65. January 25, 2008

    Fred Schechter

Phew!!! There’s still a show!! I’m backing away from the cliff now, (good, I was afraid of heights!)

QOTD: Any great adventure with friends, Sunrayce 95′Rubicon 07, LeMons 08′ (coming up) great projects, great friends, and great wine!

Gotta roll at the race in Thunder Show gear,, represent! (ok,, well, just say HI!)

    Mathieu

    Hi Gary,

Thank you so much for all your hard work. I have learned so much since I started watching your show a couple months ago – I get so excited now when I drink wine now!

QOTD: Traveling to Medjugorje, Croatia where I figured out what I wanted to do with my life.

  68. January 25, 2008

    JC

Very cool! You know, you’re at the point where you could do “The Best Of The Thunder Show” anytime you need a break! Thanks man, QOTD: I spent 3 weeks in Costa Rica exploring and hanging out, great times.

  69. January 25, 2008

    Nathan L

I can’t believe you were serious Gary! I figuared you were messing with us like you did at episode 200 and 300. Great to know your sticking around. I would have been VERY upset the last couple of days if I knew you were serious QOTD: Heading up to the NJ (from TX) for grad school. I hate the weather and will move back when I’m done but am SO happy to have the experience.

  70. January 25, 2008

    JoshL

Ahhhh…the emotional roller coaster I’ve been through this week (not all from the alleged termination of the show)…now I get to relax and feel good about life again…good thing I caught the episode to hear the good news before I went out to enjoy this Friday! Sagrantino Di Montefalco…I’ll definitely have to add it to my “to do” list, thanks for the info as always.
QOTD: As much as I bitch and moan about it when I’m there, my work is the most non-family related, yet worthwhile activity that I do. I’m part of an operation that manufactures vaccines for the entire country and some foreign countries as well..every kid that grows up without having to suffer from measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, etc. is what makes me proud of what I do.

  71. January 25, 2008

    Jaybird

Yippidy-Doo I am glad you’re sticking around…there is no show without you, I have never meet anyone with as much enthusiasm. There is no one who could fill those shoes.

QOTD: What is the best non-family thing? That would have to be losing my…there I go again not being able to finish my thought, but it is the truth.

  72. January 25, 2008

    randyb

Wow, thanks for introducing us to Sagrantino. I’ve seen it but have never tried it. I’ll seek out a bottle for sure.

QOTD: 15 middle-aged men trekking up to Northstar, renting 3 to 4 houses, riding mountain bikes by day and drinking beer, vodka and wine by night. Always, a huge wine tasting event on night two. Comradery, excercise, superb food and wine, poker, darts, golf and fresh air. I think this will be the 9th year this summer, but each year I’m left with fewer brain cells so it could be the 10th.

  73. January 25, 2008

    DaveyDonut

I didn’t actually think you were serious about “7 episodes left…” figured you were just playing with us like you like to do, but it sounds like you were pondering it! That would have totally sucked. This show is actually a big part of why I’ve gotten SO into wine in the last two years. Of course maybe I should curse you for that, because when I look at the percent of my income I spend on wine it’s STOOPID. BUT… it is a choice I’m comfortable with because the wine has truly enhanced my life. I still love ya, and glad to see you will continue… but you have added some doubt to my mind that it will last as long as I had originally been thinking (i.e. indefinitely)… hope you stick to it!

I have not had a Sagrantino, but from the sound of it I’d totally love it… I do love old school Italian wine (I think something like 45% of my cellar is Italian!), including Brunello… honestly the way you’re describing these things I wonder if they’re similar to Aglianico? I have some Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro, and I’m thinking this Paolo Bea may be in that kind of league. I will definitely have to check some out! My local shops don’t have a good selection, though… you should offer the 2003 Martinelli Sagrantino Di Montefalco on free shipping on Monday! I love how your free.WL offering today was what you tasted yesterday. I bought four! Do it again!

QOTD: Omm… that depends on what you mean. I guess philosophically, it’d be when I decided (and it is a decision) to truly be happy, and take responsibility for my actions, and realize that what I have and archive in this world is up to ME and no one else. The slogan I live by: Those who truly want something find a way; those who don’t find an excuse.

That intro was like my old highschool lacrosse coach playing everything cool, letting everyone almost relax during the speech before the game and then exploding! I just got pumped up Gary! Now lets go kick so Ass!

QOTD: The greatest non-family related thing i have ever taken part in was the 2007 Aids Life Cycle ride. We rode our bicycles 576 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles over the course of a week and raised ALOT of money for an INCREDIBLE cause (13 million bones!)

incredible to see that we still get to share our time with you everyday… hopefully for a long tim to come.

  76. January 25, 2008

Okay, it may not be the best non-family experience of my life, but it certainly, but I finally got a chance to roll on down to the wine lib after a long day at work today, and it sure was the greatest thing I’ve done this week!

I also, btw, believe that it was me, with only a little bit of GV, that convinced him to keep going — nah…

I’m hugely excited that the show is going to continue. Something was telling me that you didn’t seem .. well .. done with it yet.

Gary, glad you are back. Your the only show I watch religiously every day. That includes blogs, TV, newpaper and other media. Hey, stop doing the email. The show is what we love. The star doesn’t have to do email every day. You have replied to me a few times and I appreciate it, but, family and your other passions come before answering emails to 1000s of people. I think that would make life much better. Also, stick a few advertisment up on page to pay for an assistant.

Never even heard of Sagrantino. That’s why we need you, Gary. Great show! We’re sooooo glad you aren’t stopping after 400 shows. And you know we’ll be watching.

QOTD: Man that’s tough. Carl says it’s too hard to think of one thing. I’d have to say its having a piece of artwork accepted to an international exhibition.

And we can breath again…seriously Gary, anything the Vaynernation can do to make your load a little lighter?

    Great Show!

QoTd: Playing golf with my best friend or just having a cigar.

Thanks so much for all you do! I’m glad you’re going to keep the thunder rolling.

Sometimes I wish I wasn’t a CKC — I’d love to try that last wine! But $78 is near my monthly budget for FOOD! Eek.

    Enjoy your weekend.

    Neil

Great! Glad to hear you’re sticking around so Mott can get his daily massage.

QOTD: My life is very family oriented right now – the greatest non-family things I have ever done, hmmm, probably would be when I was in a rock band with a whole bunch of players from New Jersey, Queens & The Bronx (the bass player and I were the only californians). It’s where I learned to toughen up a bit and learn to appreciate good ‘ol east coast sarcasm. We gigged the heck out of San Francisco dives and man did we drink a ton of beer. That was then: nowdays I love to hang out with my wife and daughter and enjoy fine wine, good food and reasonable bedtimes. No regrets – actually I have never been happier in my life and I can still riff a mean myxolydian scale when I want to.

  85. January 25, 2008

    Jonathan Fingas

Thanks a ton for carrying on — I know it’s hard, but we need your kind of wine criticism out there! Otherwise, Wine Spectator and their kind will take over.

  86. January 25, 2008

    elliottf

Gary, you made my day! I was really worried when you said you were stopping because over the past year or so you’ve become as close to a part of my family as a guy screaming into a camera over the internet could!

QOTD: I honestly can’t think of anything I’ve done that was worthwhile that didn’t include someone in my family in some way…

  87. January 25, 2008

QOTD: Spending the weekend (been fortune twice) working on a Yosemite Fund project — digging holes, moving rocks, hauling dirt. Physically annilated at the end of an 8hr day, but so damn satisfied.

Thank you for once again opening my eyes to a new wine variety and region of the world. You bring the “Thunder” to each episode and that is what keeps me comming back for more shows each week. Glad to see that there will be more great shows in the future. Thank you for all of your hard work, and I think most don’t realize how much you do behind the scenes to make this happen.

QOTD: Traveling to Alba, Italy back in 1997 on an exchange trip. Amazing people and spectacular wines. I want to go back very soon and see more.

  90. January 25, 2008

    Gary,

As I am getting ready to fly to FL to visit my parents, I get great news from you on continuing the show! What a Friday!

THE BOY IS BACK AND HERE TO STAY!!!

Hey…how could you of even thought to bail out on us (even though I knew you weren’t going anywhere;)….with the writers strike and all, you are in like flint baby…after all there is nothing else to watch :) …probably didn’t even think of that…did ya…tell the truth…come on!

QotD: Best thing (non-family) I’ve ever done? Hmm, I’ll have to say that I confronted my inner fears and invested in setting up my own freelance artist career. Now I just gotta find clients and establish productive relationships.

I’m glad that we will CONTINUE to change the Wine World with you and WLTV.

Granted, you emphasize the point that it is just a little bit of you. Your presence in WLTV reminds me of a keystone. It’s just a little rock, nothing more. But step back and look at what that little old rock is doing.

    Bam.

OH yea….on a serious note (imagine that) I have never had a Sagrantino Di Montefalco….so I even learned something today (imagine that….2X now)….the Palo sounds like something that would fit nicely into my new venture into Sagrantino Di Montefalco.

QOTD: Wow, I had a really hard time thinking of an answer for this one. It’s too big a question. Maybe I’ll come back to it…

QOTD For me it would be getting some “me” time. Be it going grocery shopping, going to the gym, or hitting barnes and noble.

K, I am so happy that your staying. The best non-family experience that I have had was probably in the Philippines. There was this place called Gaines Beach. It was so primitive and beautiful. You had to take a bonka boat to get there, the place was so laid back, trails and waterfalls. I went with a bunch of friends, most of whom have become family now. Navy kinda does that…

I am a new viewer, with only a dozen or so episodes under my belt, but I know a good thing when I see it. I love this show, and I am very happy, and thankful that you are going to be staying on for a while.

QOTD: Relaxing with a glass of wine after a long day where you know without a doubt that you gave it your best, all 24 hours.

Yah can’t run from the fame, your just meant to be a star G-Man. Just don’t pull a Britney on us, stay you. We it like it that way.

QOTD: moved from Montana to NYC after college… So glad you’re continuing with WLTV, though I do wonder how you do so much in a day, along with all the travel your job must demand. Keep up the great work! PS: stopping by your shop tomorrow to pick up a case I ordered and I’m very much looking forward to seeing the place…

    laurie in VT

Yay! I do feel much better now.

So- where’s the ‘Mott, Link it Up!’ tee? How can I possibly send in a picture without the proper attire?!!

QOTD: non-family involved, hmm… I guess that would be putting myself through UVM’s School of Nursing, way back when.

  111. January 25, 2008

    Badger Ann

QOTD: Hard to say, as most great events in my life involve family, but I would have to say having the nerve to drive a car stuffed with all my worldly possessions from PA to WI as a 22 year old to continue my engineering studies, without a place to live and not knowing a soul. Five years later, I had a Ph.D., and became engaged on my graduation day!

By the way, if any Vayniacs are considering a vacation to Italy, you MUST GO TO UMBRIA! Stunningly beautiful and less crowded with tourists than Tuscany. Orvieto, Assisi, Gubbio, and Deruta (pottery shopping) are definitely worth seeing.

  112. January 25, 2008

    Carl Schulze

It’s a tie between pedaling my bike up the Col du Galibier (famous climb in the Tour de France) and being a contestant on Jeopardy. Both hugely exciting. But I REALLY wanna write about Sagrantino! Had my first – before I was much into wine – in Assisi in a lovely restaurant “San Francesco” overlooking the Basilica of St Francis. Having read my Umbrian guidebooks, I knew of Montefalco and their wine, so I ordered a bottle and absolutely loved. That wine experience more than any other in my life ignited my passion for wine. In a couple of months my 1000-bottle wine cellar will be complete, and that leads to a question for Gary: what about the ageability of these wines? Strongly tannic wines I know tend to age well. I’m sitting on a couple of Paola Bea’s and three Arnaldo Caprai “25 Anni” bottles. Am I wrong to let these age 10+ years?

  113. January 25, 2008

GV: Wow….. I think we are all thrilled you’re going to keep WLTVing. And, I think we know what a commitment / effort this is for you in addition to running your business. And Mott, should get a little credit because I know he’s not throwing the tape in the Beta Max. Wow did I date myself!

QOTD: Ummmmmmm Motorcycle touring with guys I worked with.

  114. January 25, 2008

    DannInNH

Thanks for sticking around a little longer. We all should realize this great trip won’t last forever; we better learn from Gary and pay more attention to how he does what he does while he is still willing to teach us. More than likely, we will never attain his skill level, but for myself, I will continue to work at it, since this is an endeavor and passion that is really enjoyable and can be quite costly.
Too often in life we don’t realize how good it is until it is gone, so to all the V’s out there, heed this word of caution…it won’t last. So let us learn as much as we can from the most informative and enjoyable teacher in the present day wine world!

QOTD: Probably spending time helping families and residents that had Alzheimer’s.

  115. January 25, 2008

    Nathan N

Gary I’m SO glad to hear that your sticking around! Your passion and excitement are contagious. Thank you so much.

QOTD: Scrambling up a waterfall in Yosemite National Park.

Gary I’m so glad that you decided to keep doing the show! When I’m having a bad day, I can always count on you to make me laugh. I know everyone at the winery where I work will also be happy with this news. I’ve been a lurker for over a year, but no more lurking for me, baby!

  119. January 25, 2008

Gary – I feel mixed about this. I did a local tv show years ago (web 2.0 before the web). I loved that show and it made me molto famous on at a very local level. But it was a slog. I got tired. We did the whole thing – soup to nuts – week in and week out and it started to get me down. At two years, I had to pull the plug. There was other stuff I wanted to do. If you need to walk away, then you need to walk away. You’ll come back, and be better for it.

  120. January 25, 2008

    Sharon

Gary, thanks for answering my Facebook question, very cool of you… I can understand that there are many demands on you at this point.. we enjoy your show so much and appreciate your efforts for our entertainment and amusement and education… and realize you are a bit of a born entertainer and get off of it some too :-) . Love ya!
QOTD: Fave non-family thing? Hmmm… well I’m a movie junkie, like hikes, shopping, reading, political action, reading, dunno, guess I’m kind of a nerd. Oh yeah, watching that Pats/Red Sox has been a thrill lately because growing up it was generally painful.

  121. January 25, 2008

    Kevin M

I don’t watch every show and I’ve only commeneted a few times but you have been a huge influence on the way I view wine and have given me a new appreciation and perspective. I just want to say Thanks!

  122. January 25, 2008

QOTD: Well, I’d like to say WLTV, but since we’re all family here I can’t go with that.

  123. January 25, 2008

    Tom R

I understand the problems that can arise when you’re committed to one project too many — but if you have to give one up, I hope it’s not going to be the one that earns you a place among the top 20 things to be happy about in this life!

QOTD: After being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 8 years ago, I lost a lot of weight, started exercising a lot, achieved normal blood sugar in a few months, and have maintained normal blood sugar ever since, WITHOUT taking any medications. The best-kept secret about diabetes is that it’s quite possible to do this, if you change your habits enough. Almost no one actually does this, so doctors tend to talk as if it can’t be done — but if doctors keep talking that way, patients won’t try. Anyway, my love of wine was NOT one of the things I needed to change, and I haven’t changed it! Right now I’m training for a marathon I’ll be running in Napa, in early March. By the time all this cold rain stops I’ll be running down Silverado Trail past a lot of beautiful vineyards, and I’m going to make sure there’s a friend waiting for me at the finish line with a bottle of something really good.

  124. January 25, 2008

    pforty

Woo-hoo! Nice to know you’ll be around for a few more episodes…

QOTD: Singing on the stage of some of the coolest opera houses in the world with some of the most diverse and interesting people (outside of my extended Vayniac Family!)

  125. January 25, 2008

    Obama_Man

So happy right now, so happy.

Wow, too bad the Paolo is sold out, I was going to can dinner and going out tonight for that baby.

QOTD: Being a part of the Obama campaign for over a year now– amazing. And WL, of course!

    Tstank

Yeah baby thunder-show is going forever. For some reason I thought you were going to tell us that Lizzy was pregnant and you needed time. I think the thunder show going on is a great but close second.

QOTD: Best non family thing I have ever done was help homeless children get off the street. It is a wonderful charity that you should seek out. You put a purple Stand Up For Kids shirt on and hand out food, cleaning supplies and bring homeless children into foster care. If you want a life changing event do this they have it in almost every state.

  127. January 25, 2008

    Andrew H.

First I want to say Thank You Gary for caring so much about all of us. For me personally, you have been a key part in my wine education and have helped me become more adventurous with my wine selection. Thank You!

QOTD: The greatest non-family related thing that I have ever done would have to be my acceptance into nursing school. I have worked very hard for three 1/2 years and made many sacrifices just so I could have an opportunity to become a nurse. I look forward to helping people and educating the community about health related issues. Thank You again Gary!

  128. January 25, 2008

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!
…and from the heart, thank you for sticking around. Your show has well surpassed a 20min. entertainment show to me. I personally really look up to you. Your knowledge of wine and great success in your life is an inspiration to me and continues to provide positive motivation in my life.

QOTD: The greatest thing I have ever done without my family was probably my trip to Napa valley this past October. It was a dream of mine for a long time, and I finally made the trip happen. Since that trip I decided to take at least one wine related trip every year. Definitely looking forward to March 29th…..I’m hoping to be able to make it from Texas.

  129. January 25, 2008

Cheers Gary!!, love WLTV. im from england and am 18, but have lived in switzerland for 8 years. the drinking age is 16 there so ive been drinking beers, spirits etc. but now have just gotten into drinking wines. absolutly love this show. thanks for the advice on some of the cheaper wines as im on a student budget. hehe

QOTD: would have to be watching the sunset in the middle of the bush in south africa with a few mates on holiday.

  132. January 25, 2008

    Tooch

QOTD: I’m a tortured Philadelphia sports fan, so after the Birds made the Super Bowl in 2004 I ran around my neighborhood in Center City Philadelphia with a pot and a big metal spoon screaming “we’re going to the super bowl!”. It was cold that night, around 5 degrees, and I was outside in my sweatpants and tshirt that i’d been watching the game in. Best part about the entire thing – I ran into probably 100 other people doing the same thing. We hugged in the middle of the snowy streets, and i think i might have even kissed a lucky girl along the way.

    What a night!

Side note: VERY happy you’re sticking around Gary – I had a panicked phone call to my dad in the middle of the night yesterday about the show concluding. he was alarmed and said that a fellow Edisonian wouldn’t leave his friends behind like that! Guess he knew what going on!

    Cheers

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: best non-family thing I ever did? Well, I once diverted an asteroid (with diameter the size of Ecuador) that was on a collision course with Earth, using intensely focused mental visualization and willpower, hours of continuously repeated polysyllabic mantra, 2 sheets of cellophane, and a flexible sipping straw, thereby saving the inhabitants of an unsuspecting Earth a swift & sudden annhilation. No thanks were ever offered me, but then, congruent with my humility, none were sought.

No, wait…. that was Tom Cruise who did that for us. Sorry, I get the two of us mixed up. But if you were to ask him your QOTD, well, then THAT was the best non-family thing that Tom Cruise ever did. (I’ll have to get back to you on my answer.)

  134. January 25, 2008

    Dave

    Tough question…

Thanks for keeping the show going! How else would I learn about wines like Sagrantino Di Montefalco? Do people really say radool in NYC? Hopefully “snap” has jumped the shark.

  135. January 25, 2008

    Mike L

Gary, I go away for a week and come back to this! You scared the bejeebus out of me, man! Thanks, for sticking around. I wanted to say that I’m going to my first wine tasting next week. I would have never thought I was going to ever do something like that!

QOTD: I was going to say work, but dammit they’re family too…dysfunctional, but still family. I don’t really have an answer. Family is so much a part of my every day life..

Thanks for keeping the torch lit GV. As reflected by all the comments you are much appreciated.

GV, if it’s too much with everything you have to do…cut back on the number of shows to 1 or 2 a week. Just don’t every stop!

QOTD: Coolest thing in the world was when I flew from JFK to Paris in the cockpit of the Concorde from take-off to 60,000 feet and Mach 2! Now that was damn cool!!!

    Dominus

There is a G-d! I’ve had an excruciating long day traveling from DC to Ny and back again, sat down with a glass of TGIF Dominus and I am surprised by this monumental declaration!!! Ohmigosh! On top of thagt, just before launching the show, I was explaining with tears that we were ready to watch one of the last shows from WLTV! To my excitement, the G-Man is back!

QOTD: Tough one . . . not that it would be easy even if it were “family” related but I guess I would say one of my most memorable non-family things I’ve ever done was finished one of my childhood goals of graduating college at the prime old age of of 41! I celebrated by traveling to Europe on my own and walking through the train station and opening the doors onto the Grand Canal is a site I will never forget.

Thank you, thank you, Gary for staying with us.

    CHEERS!

    Dear Mr. Vaynerchuk,

Ok, that doesn’t sound quite right…. HI GARY!!!!!!!!!!!

    hmmmmmm. Too thirteen-year-old.

Yo Gary! ‘Sup in da hizzle?

I am super stoked you are going to continue WLTV! That aside (and it’s hard to put that aside!) This was a fantastic show. Deep, dark, dry, tannic, huge – that’s what I’m looking for! Watching you taste is really inspiring and exciting!

I wanted to share with you what happened at the last store tasting I went to: I was tasting a wine, and it seemed to have some hot/dusty aromas similar to Aussie Shiraz’s I’d had, so I asked the importer if it had been a hot year. He looked surprised and said that was exactly right! Then later I tasted a wine that smelled more like BBQ ribs in every way than BBQ ribs, if that’s possible. I told him and some of the store staff what I thought – and no one really agreed. Between having my ego stroked for guessing it was a hot year, and nailing a flavor profile that no one else agreed with, guess which made me feel like a million bucks? The ribs, of course!

    Peace and health

    Rajiv

What an awesome episode. Oh, how I love the big Tannin Italian wines. I’m definitely going to go out get some Sagrantino Di Montefalco.

Gary, I’m so pysched that you are continuing the show. You just put a happy ending on a crummy week. I’m so glad, I don’t have to try to explain to my sone Mike that the show was ending. Anyway, just wanted to say thank you! Really, THANK YOU.

QOTD: Outside of family things, it’s hard to say, because like you, I’m all about my family. I guess it was when I argued and won a case before the New Jersey Supreme Court.

    Dude, keep the Thunder Rolling…

I honestly don’t know how you do it. It has to take hours to get back to all of those emails. I’ve been a small business owner for over 8 years. I am leaving that one and starting another, so I understand the lack of time.

I love the shows, but truthfully it is hard to listen to all of them. I haven’t always left a comment, but I wouldn’t say I was a lurker.

I don’t know how you do it, but I lift my glass to you and the show.

Kinda was hoping you would at least stick around till I can send you a bottle from from small vineyard I planted last spring. http://www.primevine.com

QOTD… i don’t know if it’s my GREATEST thing…but it’s the first thing that popped into my head. Christmas/New Years 1980/81. I was 17 years old and I make a trip from Kansas(with no family, or anybody else I knew for that matter)to China. I hooked up with some people I’ve never met before in Denver then on to San Fran then to Hong Kong and next China. No, my parents weren’t anywhere near rich, but I had the opportunity and they let me go. I spent New Years in Bejing… went to a party where I had bubbly that I loved, loved, loved, (my first taste)..drove around Bejing with a cabby that evening, he couldn’t speak a bit of english, I couldn’t even begin to speak Chinese. Hello Gary i am new to the wine thing. i started watching your show just before christmas, since i decided i wanted to start to get more serious about wine. i ask my wife to buy be a very small wine cellar only 16 bottles to get started. i have ordered a few bottles from you during the free shipping sale and a looking forward to trying them while watching your shows. to try and see if i can smell and taste what you are describing. Thank you for not stopping this show. you have made me fell more comfortable learning about wine then i though was possible. i hope to meet you one day and thank you in person. Keep bringing the thunder.

PS how do i get a wrist band?

Gary, thanks for everything. I know what you mean when you say you have too many projects going on. Just from my end I run a business, have a family, am on call 24/7, have a wife who is fantastic, have employees who need my attention, and then there is maybe some time left for ME. I don’t know how you do it. I hope some day the wife and you get the greatest gift of all…..a child. That will be a life changing event.

QOTD: One of the best things I have done was backup with some friends for 3 days through the upper areas of Michigan. We had a great time, enjoyed the company, and escaped from the routines of college life. You learn about people when you listen. This is much easier to do when you remove yourself from the everyday grind.

Great episode. You finally got me Gaz – I don’t recall ever trying a Sagrantino but the way you describe the tannins, they sound right up my alley. Give me a little sandpaper in the mouth, a little velcro action between my cheek and gum and I’m a happy, happy man.

Relieved to hear you’re staying on the air. I always enjoy how, when you taste a wine you really really like, you start off in subdued, serious tones, then raise the voice a little, then explode into rip-roarin’ Gary that we all love. Like with the Pagliaro Secco review today – classic Vaynerchuk.

QOTD: Huh, well, I had a couple of good relationships that didn’t end in marriage (thus they weren’t family). And of course watching and contributing comments to WLTV is right up there (or am I part of the Vayniac family, disqualifying that one?)

  162. January 25, 2008

hey Gary! i’ve been a lurker for a while – love the show. i can imagine doing the show everyday is difficult. maybe doing shows 3x a week instead fo 5 might give us vaniacs just enough of wltv to get by while giving you a bit more time for other stuff. no need to be all or nothing!
i had never heard of these wines. i’ve really gotten excited about barolo and barbaresco wines lately – looks like these might be right up my alley.

qotd: when i was in my early 20s, i moved to interior alaska just for an adventure, forming some long lasting friendships in the process. several years later, i rode a bike down the pacific coast with friends, having one of the truly pleasant times of my life. several years later i got an apartment in nice and did a french language immersion course, making lots of friends from europe and asia in the process. these are a few that immediately come to mind.

I’m so glad to know that you’re not leaving us, Gary! We know how much must go into the Thunder Show… it’s a big burden to do a new show every day. What’s more, you’re so in demand as a wine celeb, shakin’ hands and kissin’ babies. I don’t think any of us would mind if you scaled it back a bit, doing fewer shows per week, if it means that we can keep our beloved Gary VAY…NER…CHUK around for another few years. Also, thanks for the response to my email and the shout out to Ellen on her 50th birthday… if it weren’t for Ellen I never would have found you (yes, all you veterans, I’m a newbie).

    GV,
First of all, WHEEEWWW, huge sigh of relief! I was starting to go into a panic that you were terminating the Thundershow. However I understand if it’s getting in the way of other higher priorities. If it ever starts becoming a burden, maybe a compromise like 1 or 2 shows a week instead of cold turkey?

Great show as always. Last week my wine shop offered me some Montefalco and it sounded so tempting. I even did some research on the area. I think I’ll have to go back and get some.

Oh, and the QOTD: I went to the country of Georgia to run some arts and social justice workshops, and got to experience the beauty of the people and country there. Georgia is the BIRTHPLACE OF WINE, you know! I got to drink wine made in people’s back yards, and brought home some of the greatest, most raw and riveting wines I’d ever tasted. You should do a show on Georgian wines if you can ever get your hands on some.

QOTD: Two years in the Peace Corps in a Islamic country where wine is frowned upon. I grew up. I became mello, less full of myself. Learned the world is one place.

Gary, you have a more than a tiger by the tail. With your innocents, you have too much to do without help. Trade it out and make a team of this thing. A quarterback has 10 others on the field, a bench and coaches.

We are changing the world, not just the wine worldl. Look at what your family has done. You and us can make the world a better place even through wine. It has been done before starting with water. At times it is scary where you stand. I have never been where you are but ask for help. What you have done already if fantastic.

QOTD: I graduated from law school last year, but before I started my career as an attorney, I volunteered at a Legal “Clinic” where I helped a middle age woman establish guardianship over two very young boys, whose mother had abandoned them. I didnt get paid for my time, at least not in dollars. I’ll never forget realizing that the blessings of my life are not for me to selfishly hoard. We’re all here to help one another, however we are fit to do so. The ironic thing is, I KNOW this woman (and her two boys) gave me so much more than I could ever give them.

QOTD: I that the answers to many QOTDs tend to be lighthearted or humorous but here is a serious one.

I few years ago I had to pair up with a classmate from high school to perform two-person CPR on a stranger, an older gentleman who had a heart attack. He was revived and, although he later died of complications while in the hospital, his family thanked us for giving them time to be with their father once more and to say goodbye.

For all of you out there that do not know CPR, take a class. Learn it. I hope you NEVER have to use it but, if you ever find yourself in a situation where someone is in trouble, you’ll be glad you did.

Gary, I’m very glad to hear that you will continue to do the Thunder Show. I know I was a bit harsh in my comments yesterday, but now that you have opened yourself to us, I can totally understand where you’re coming from, and I appreciate your candor. I guess I forgot how I, too, have gone through periods in my life when I felt overwhelmed and was convinced I needed to reset my priorities. And, in retrospect, I was wrong to say you “owe” us an explanation. You do not owe us anything, you have given so much already. I wish I lived in a state where I could receive shipments from your store, if only as a way of saying thank you for what you have done for us. Good luck and God bless as you push onward.

You have no idea how happy I am!!!!!! If you need to cut back then by all means do it but I am so glad you are staying! Well, once again I have a new area to check out that I never heard of thank you Gary.

Coolest thing? Hmmm Seeing Guns n’ Roses at the Forum in L.A. Surfing Rincon. Mtn Biking Backbone trail in the Santa Monica Mtns with a friend of mine. Getting my Teaching Credential. Drinking Silver Oak. My gymnast girlfriend in college.(ohhhh) Breaking 48 seconds in the 400m in H.S. Scoring my first Try in Rugby in college. Finishing Lonesome Dove. Getting a letter from a former 5th grade student telling me about her new school, friends, and how thankful that I was her teacher. The unexpected things are the most amazing.

    FORZA THUNDERSHOW!!!!
Hey Gary, Mott, and Crew. I haven’t been able to watch yoru shows over the past couple of days, so when my boss told me that you were ending the show I completely freaked out! The Thundershow is something that I look forward to everyday and has been as long as I’ve been into wine! (Honestly…I think I had my first glass of sine about 2 years ago.) So, I’m glad that you’re not ending the show!

On a side note, Gary, I just wanted to let you know (without sounding creepy) that when it comes to wine, you are an inspiration to me. By watching your shows not only have I learned so much about wine and the culture of wine, but how to relate to wine, how to talk about wine, and how to relate to other people when talking about or sharing wine. Because of you (along with a few others) I have developed a passion for wine….so thank you….your show has changed my life (for the better) more than you’ll ever know.

    Gary,

I haven’t been very good with commenting over the past week as recently life has been hectic and exhausting for me. First I’m very glad to hear that you are going to continue the show. Last night I went to my first Vayniac offline in NYC and it was a lot of fun (also thanks to Kristen for setting this up). Aside from meeting some Vayniacs, I also did a blind tasting for the first time ever and it was also the first time I have tasted so many wines at once, which ultimately taught me what my limit is before palate fatigue sets in.

Very cool episode today, Montefalco sounds like something I need to check out.

QOTD: I was a teaching assistant for a couple of semesters at my alma mater, which was very rewarding. I think in a few years I would like to try to become a professor in my chosen field, architecture.

    Rock n Roll Andy

I have played music ( guitar ) for 18 years. I have been in multiple bands. Those are all part of my family. I lived in Dallas Texas and studied Ninjutsu ( way of the NINJA ) for 5 years. We went on 5 survival camping trips. Very spiritual journeys!!!! Between both, I have many non- family family members. Gary, you have added your own sense of joy to my life. I recognize someone out in the world trying to achieve a dream. You have also inspired me in a way that will change my future business ventures on the WEB.. I alway’s dreamed of doing documentaries that are relavent to peoples everyday lives and my own. I also will incorporate a videoblog for fun. Keep your eyes out , and you will know when it hit’s. But I thank you!!!!! You help people get through the same day, after day!!! Also help to push us to do what it is we REALLY want to do!!! HAVE FUN!!!!!! LIVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!!

STFU and do the show already … enough with the preamble. We get it…were lucky to have you and your luckier to have us. You are almost as ashamedly self-promoting as your WWF heroes. Please proceed with the swirly swirl and the sniffy sniff. I am starting to tire of your act but am grateful for your inspiration that I embrace my own palate. I am willing to bear further false modesty and demands for “love ” if the ratio of wine exploration is high.

    Respectfully, but Reservedly

Hot chicks dorm room? Nerdy Chemist? I love this friggin’ show!!! Thank you Gary for keeping the Thunder Show going!! And I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I have learned so much.

Honestly, I was attending my best friend and his wife’s birthday party tonight, and I was checking winelibrarytv.com on my phone to check the status of the show. You made it a very good evening and a great start to the weekend (as a side note, I got them both a great wine selection as a result of watching the show. Previously I would have never been able to pick a wine for them, but this year it was absolutely no problem). Thank you so much Gary!

    Thanks again Gary.

    Gary,
Another great show. DON’T QUIT! You’re very entertaining. We understand the stresses and burdens of 5 shows a week. Consider two or three shows a week. That should free up your time. And of course its all about time. (Is your wife giving you a hard time? We understand.)

I just found a flavorful cheap French Pinot Noir, “Pinot Evil”, about 7 bones. An upfront spicy fruit with a dry, slightly tanic finish. So much more action that the Cal Cabs or Aussie fruit bombs. Great drink at 7 bones, ( #7 Burt Jones, great arm)

QOTD: Favorite thing was a trip to Aspen and Vail, Co for a great skiing trip. I bought John Denver’s Greatest Hits and skied beautiful country with my wife and great friend. It was sweet.

QOTD: I coached Little League baseball in Ladue MO when I was 23. I didn’t have a kid on the team, and didn’t know any of the families going in… I just loved baseball and kids about baseball that much, and we ended up winning the championship that season. Great memories.

Gary, you don’t understand how happy I am…you MADE my day after having a craptastic time at work. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for continuing WLTV and educating us Vayniacs! I can’t tell you how great it is to chill out at night and eat dinner while watching the Thunder Show. No matter how badly my day went, I can always count on an episode of WLTV to lighten my mood! And please, I think we’d all agree that if you need to cut back to fewer shows a week, then do so (for little things like sanity and family)!

QOTD: Going to France for study abroad was definitely an adventure and completely changed my path in life. But one of my proudest accomplishments was completing an 8 day winter camping experience in the woods of Maine during junior year of high school (including a 24 hour solo and a group solo). Sometimes I don’t even believe I did it!

QOTD: A solo month-long roadtrip I took out west to the “Four Corners” area (NM, CO, UT, AZ) shortly after I graduated from college. It was life-affirming. What an amazing area!

Great chat there at the beginning, and great to hear that it’s not a clean finish to the show. Take whatever time you need to get your ducks lined up however you need to, and do an episode (or eight) whenever you can! Thanks for all of the time you’ve put into the Thunder Show!

Great news, Gary. I am so pleased that you will still be around – I have enjoyed, and learned so much from, this show. But, what is up with not being able to leave comments on the video? I just became one of the fans with enough stones to do so, and then it was taken away. How sad.

QOTD: making records and touring with my band. I have never been in an extremely “famous” band, but I have made a record or two here and there. And, I love playing shows and seeing the world. I am lucky to have been able to do both with music.

GV: I friggin’ love you man, you made my day. And jeazy creazy if you need to trim down the production schedule… please do so. Even a Monday only (or which ever) show is better that not having you at all. Most importantly, keep the message alive. I’d be hard pressed to find another show of any sort, that focused so much on family, friends, and individuality.

    -Thank you

(((long sigh of relief))) Gary, thanks for everything brother! and I know that at the end of the day that Wine is just Wine, but i think the Vayniac nation would agree with me that the Thundershow is, and will always be about much more than “just wine”.

Cheers for continuing the show – even if it is for a little while longer! Much respect! Keep doing it for love of doing it though, if it becomes a drain on your time, mental state, money, family you’ve got to quit – no matter how much we all love you!

Gary, I have been thinking long and hard on this idea of you leaving. I selfishly am glad you are going to continue but then again is that really fair of me and all the Vayniac’s to have this control over you and your dreams??? Let me tell you a short story.

My daughter had a boyfriend that was happy with what they did every day of their seven years together. We, her family all thought that the life they were living was just fine and dandy and had no problem with it all. Something happened two years ago and they split up. Our whole family thought it was horrible and tried to get them back together. BIG MISTAKE. To this day, he is still in the same old rut he has been in for the past nine years and she has gone out there in the world and has blossomed into an unbelievable young successful woman. And, in only two years. I tell you this story because I would hate to think that me and the Vayniac Nation’s (like my family and I’s) wishes for you would hold you and yours dreams back in any way.

I think you ought to follow your dreams, whether they include us Vayniac’s or not. Don’t let or allow us to hinder or hold back your dreams.

    And with that said…….

QOTD: I dressed up as Santa on Christmas Eve and went from room to room in a local hospital wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. From the 80 year old man that said, ”get the hell out of my room” to the 86 year old lady who said nothing, yet had a glistening sparkle in her eyes as she squeezed my hand, it was worth more to me than all the gifts on Christmas morning.

QOTD- Standing in the middle of a thousand Haitians in the middle of the darkest night, out on the far end of the western lower arm of the island of Hispanola, I had one of those moments where you understand a new truth. I realized that everything we have in our society to make us happy is absent there except for family, friendships, and a spiritual understanding. They are the poorest, least healthy, least served by their government, most likely to die people in the western hemisphere, yet that night they were joyously singing, and chanting and dancing, and praising like they were the luckiest people on earth.

Gary – we know you give your all every show. We suck it up and hopefully we give back in some way to grow the V-Nation.

Well, Gary if making this show 5 days a week is getting too much for you, I think maybe just do it once a week. I mean you don’t owe us anything, so if once a week is all you can do this, I don’t think anybody who follow your show will have a problem with that. I’m currently interning in a TV station, so I know how much work needed to be put in even for a 20 minute video. Just keep it up as long as you can, I’m having so much fun watching the show and learning so much from you it is just absolutely amazing!!!

QOTD: Definitely the 3 months I spent volunteer at UCLA hospital, helping little kids with various mental disabilities, and hrough different activities to teach them how to behave properly in a social setting. It was just a great experience.

Thank you Gary…You really made my day! I am a college student who was honestly really cut up about you announcing your “retirement.” All I can say is thank you and that I can’t be happier about your decision to keep the show going. You really have become a part of my everday life and I couldn’t imagine life without seeing your show. Everyday you bring a smile to my face and I can’t say thank you enough. Your truly an inspiration. I’m actually in the process of opening my own winery. I’m a chemical engineering student at the Univesity of Pittsburgh (don’t worry, I Facebook befriended you a long while ago!) and I am looking to apply my engineering knowledge to the wine world. I hope to make a long life in the world which you find happiness.

One of your best episodes!! You picked an obscure wine (for me..I’ve heard of Montefalco, but not Sagrantino) and brought it to everyones attention. I love, no LOVE the indigenous Italian varietals. My idea for you would be to, let’s say once a week, or less often, you highlight an area, or wine, and SHOW IT ON A MAP on the other side of your chalkychalkboard! When one says Umbria to your audience, I guarantee, people don’t remember it past the end of your sentence, if that long. If people can remember a few varietals with a few regions, their learning will be excellerated.

best thing? I’ve given loads of shirts off my back for others, even if i’ve had to shiver and sometimes freeze. And i wouldn’t take a single one back… at the end of the day, isn’t the true measure of our existence simply how we treat others? how we support the dreams around us because we understand that together, we are strongest?

BTW: Loved the Timbaland in the background… GV…I like (I mean LOVE) u just the way u r!

QOTD: Realizing that random acts of kindness can truly change the world has allowed me to focus on what’s really important in life!! “Saving” Christmas for a student’s family continues to be a poignant moment in my life. They were suddenly homeless and had no money due to some very unfortunate circumstances. I helped organize an effort to raise money so the family would be able to rent an apartment. I also took the kids shopping so that they could buy presents for each member of their family. What an amazing experience!!! Since then, I seek out students who are in need and take them and a friend to dinner, shopping, movies etc… Just like you GV…I get TONS more back knowing that I’m helping to change the world…with just a little bit of me. Thanks for continuing to be an inspiration!

    Chris Braun

I’m really glad you’re continuing the show, Gary. I hope this is the right choice for you and your family, not just for your huge following out here in cyberspace.

QOTD: This is a hard question, but I think my answer has to be that a few years ago I lost about half of my body weight (without giving up wine, of course :-) ), and transformed myself from a morbidly obese computer-geek desk jockey to a fit, athletic person. This is sort of a self-serving accomplishment, I guess, but it has made me so much more able to serve family, friends, and my community. (And I’m just about to turn 60; it’s never too late to change.)

  246. January 26, 2008

    thepiratedoc

Thanks for keeping WLTV going, for now, GV. I’m in the “1 or 2 shows a week would be great” crowd. You’ve created a monster, and it’s not the Oakmonster, either! Run some of the last 392 shows once or twice a week — the new Vayniacs may be a little intimidated by the number of episodes you’ve already recorded, but they’re going to miss out on some great info. And it’s good for all of us to know exactly from whence The Thundershow has come.

QOTD: Lots of memorable non-family experiences … most involved near-death situations when I was younger and less apt to plan for emergencies. Camping at Medicine Grizzly Lake in Glacier N.P. was pristine; night sailing on the Pamlico in a wicked gale watching bioluminescent jellyfish fly over the rail was surreal. Hoping golf trip to Scotland with friends this summer will be the new #1.

I’m reassured now that WLTV will not stop, because it’s the show that made me interested in wines. Before when I went to a restaurant I didn’t know which wine to choose, and now thanks to Gary, I know! And my friends and family also like my choices.
Just for that I want to give a huge shoutout to Gary! Thank you guy! You’re awsome!

    Cheers!

I don’t think I have watched a single episode of WLTV where I didn’t smile and/or laugh at least a couple times. That includes the episodes I watched after some absolutely brutal days at work.

Bringing people happiness, each and every day, now that changes the world… seriously.

Big ups to GV, MOTT, WLTV, and Vayniacs world wide.

GREAT SHOW GARY!!!!! I’m not familiar with this wine, but I can’t wait to try some. I can’t seem to get enough Italian wine these days.

Also, I’m so glad you are continuing with the show, honestly I thought you were bluffing with all the leaving talk! The show continues to get better and better. I have learned so much about wine from you and appreciate every ep. It’s been said before, if you need to cut back on the number of episodes in order to keep the show going, then do it! 2 or 3 eps a week would still be great! I don’t know how you find time to do one a day.

So glad to hear you’ll be continuing the Thunder Show Gary. I look forward to viewing each episode.

QOTD: Wanting to do something in the days following 911, I was matched up with the widow of a FDNY firefighter killed on 911. I created memory quilts for his widow and each of his three young children, using his flannel shirts and FDNY shorts, FDNY patches, photos, and their wedding invitation. Amazingly, I chose fabrics that suited each person and when I delivered them in person to their home on Long Island, they were all thrilled. I expected lots of tears but instead there was nothing but joy.

QOTD: The most fun, or happiest thing I’ve done without family is when I went to a camp up in the middle of nowhere British Columbia, and I had no cell phone, iPod, internets, absolutely no technology. I met a bunch of new people from all over the West Coast.

Gary, thanks so much for continuing on. You have become part of my day and I always look forward to the show – it is always a bright ray of sunshine regardless of how my work day or weather or whatever else is going on. I particularly want to thank you for reminding me of how important family is, and how important it is to hear from family. Your show has made you part of my extended family, and I was saddened to think that I would lose that communication. This made me realize how important calling my 94 year old aunt is to her, and I have vowed to call even more often. Thanks for you exuberance and passion!

And thanks for the show on Sagrantion De Montefalco, it sounds like a perfect fit for my love of Madarin Tannats, and other dry, dry, dry red wines.

Thanks for introducing to somthing new. I have seen these wine, but know absolutely nothing about them because they are not covered by anyone in the press. Glad to know that you are continuing the show, I think most of us would be OK if you didn’t answer EVERY e-mail or got someone to help out with the questions. It is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into keeping somehting like this interactive and I appreciate how hard you work.

QOTD: My greatest accomplishment is becoming who I am today. I am very blessed with a great career, a loving family, and the best friends anyone could ask for in life.

Gary, I read Craig Camps blog. This was my reply:

I have been watching WLTV for a few months. I found your site as a result of one of the most recent episodes of WLTV where a viewer suggested that your blob could have been the reason that WLTV is going to be done in 6 more episodes. While your points are valid (excuse the pun… points…) I think that to dismiss Gary Vanerchuks format and point system after only viewing one episode is unfair. I’ve only been a viewer for a few months but Gary Vaynerchuk is ALWAYS saying that the points he awards is his opinion and that “your own palate” should determine what you buy and drink. He has said numerous times that his viewers should not make their wine drinking decisions based on his opinion but they should go out, try new things and make their own determinations. To dismiss his methodology and rating system after viewing one show is like dismissing Rush Limbaugh as a “kook” after listening to his show for an hour. That said, I’m glad I found your blog. I will become a regular reader.

Hope you wont be gone from the web forever.

    Hey Wine Guy…

    I feel your pain…and joy.

Thanks for the past, and for whatever the future may hold.

Thoughts…tape five 10 minute episodes on one day for a while. I realize that it will be hard for you to talk for only 10 minutes, but…pace yourself. 10 minutes of the Wine Guy is better than zero.

Ultimately, do what you need to do for you and your family. You’ve started a great thing here. Even if you pause for a while or have to move on…ya still done good.

Gary, so happy to have you for 400+. I lurk too much and only got into WLTV recently, but you’ve already helped me appreciate and love wine in a way I never have before. Let’s shoot from the hip – for 1000 shows baby! TIME FOR A SNIFFY SNIFF!

    Quoc

Yippeeeeeeeee! He’s going to stay!. On a selfish note, I am so glad. Despite this, I understand how you may feel. Take care of yourself and your family first and foremost.

I was just getting comfortable and watching your show, then Tuesday, when I watched the back to back show gave me a shock. Truthfully, there was a part of my heart that sank because I have come to see your show, your enthusiasm, your energy as part of my pick-me-up after a looooong day. I haven’t been able to come back to watch any of the other shows since Tuesday, hoping that there will be good news today. You did not fail. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Cut down the number of shows if you have to, but please continue. Your input, your enthusiasm is truly inspiring. I have turned from a water and tea guy to someone who is beginning to pair wines with meals…and not just reds with meats and whites with fish kind of pairing. And it’s all thanks to you. So I know that I haven’t left very many replies before, because I didn’t think I have much to say, but I am leaving one now. THANK YOU!

    Gary:
I read Craig’s blog, and clearly, he has succumbed to that most human of temptations: to speak before thinking or without first obtaining knowledge. Yes, you do a show about wine. You educate and spark interest in people about wine, but you are much more than a wine show. You have an infectious enthusiasm for life which is so often missing, yet so desired, by most adults who are bogged down with responsibilities. You have a way of bringing joy and reminding us to relish the important things in life… if Craig really knew you and your work, he would realize that it is YOU, not wine snobs like him, who actually live out the definition of SAVORING LIFE!
    All the best.

Gary, I’m delighted to hear that you were only considering retiring and have decided against it. The Vayniacs need you!

You and the Vayniacs might be interested to know that there is a Chicago-based wine critic named Tom Hyland who specializes in Italian wines and writes a newsletter called Guide to Italian Wines. The current issue (Winter 2007/08) just came out a few days ago and contains a feature in which he reviews a whole bunch of 2004 Sagrantino di Montefalco’s. Anybody who wants a copy can email Hyland at thwinewriter@comcast.net

TG GV! you really freaked me out Thursday. I have been distracted by a new job and not able to watch as much as I had been and I came back on Thursday, for the first time in a long time and was thunderstruck!! I am glad you are rethinking your plan to abandon the thundershow.
How may I help save the thunder??? here is my plan to show you my appreciation for all you do. My wine tasting group has been following along with Zraly’s book for a few months now. We are nearing the end and I was planning, after the last chapter, to bring the thunder into the group. Well I am not waiting till we finish the book anymore. I am doing it now! Save the thunder! We are on the chapter on Italian wines, so we will be tasting all the wines you tasted on friday and watching the show together. I will wear my two (that’s right two) wristbands and take pictures of the group and send them to you!!!
    OK? Are we cool?
It’s your show to do with as you wish, of course. But is would be such a sad sad day if after all the momentum, the ellen show, the conan show, the crazy billboard I past on my way to Summit (and nearly freaked out while driving, quite dangerous)if after all that it were over. Tweak it, lighten the load, if you shake it up a bit you might get something even cooler than it is now.

That’s our Gary as we love him. I knew you would stay! Lately I had a 100% Carignan “Vielles Vignes”. It was very awkward: Tasted like burnt plastic. I put the open bottle in the fridge for one or two days and retasted. It has evolved and is really tasty but still quite a character and I have absolutely no problem with that. My biggest thing besides family? Probably hiking/climbing onto a high mountain.

Darned straight, rootin tootin’ you’re not stopping WLTV!!

In all candor, most likely realize how time consuming your efforts are and how much you put into it all – it is appreciated. Rather than ever having ideas of halting the show, why not just scale back to one or two eps a week when you are under the gun? No one expects or demands a routine or schedule -the viewers are just happy to receive whatever you have time to produce.

I used to post. Now I lurk… but you brought me back out G.V.

Wait until you see the edit I’m putting together… maybe WLTV will hire me.

Oh, and the Jets need to take my main man Darren McFadden in the draft.

Hate to admit it, but I’ve learned to like you. Who would have taught me about Sagrantino if it was not you? Thanks. I started to learn about wines just within the last year and you have given me a lot of knowledge. Thanks again, from this uptight city of Huntsville, AL.

  283. January 26, 2008

    Saubrey

The Thunder Show lives on!! That’s Kablamo!
I definitely need to check some (cheaper) Sagrantino.
    Much love, G!

QOTD: Music, but I don’t know if that counts because I get mad support from my family! Especially from my Mom when I was young! Love ya Ma!

  284. January 26, 2008

    RANDI

    GARY STAYIN!!! WHEW!
Im definitely ordering the Paolo Bea Sagrantino!
Umm..Gary, you made a bunch of references to hot girls/dorm rooms/first times…whatcha thinkn about?! Hahaha…

QOTD: Friends from England knew this family that lived above a theater in London. The family didnt have much. The theater and their home caught fire..and a small group, including myself, built, painted, furnished a new home for the family. Now, I know many have done more, but for me, personally, it was a great feeling of triumph and the purest joy from giving that I have ever felt. The experience gave me life lessons, humbled me and put things in perspective.

Ive been lucky enough to say that I have a list of things Ive been involved with…that were completely awesome!

    WLTV is yet another one!!!
    :)

Great episode Gary. Thanks a Ton for keeping the show alive. The vayniacs understand all the hard work and time you put into this. We appreciate it very much and will continue to be awesome fans. That last wine sounds like the perfect freakin wine for me :)

Two years ago, went on a trip with 23 other people to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. For one week, everyone got along outstandingly, and probably the first and last time I’ll evet take a trip like that ever. But, that week was fantastic!

  287. January 26, 2008

    Phillyirish

    Yo, Gar!

You’re right. It can be too much, especially doing a show every day.

But, thanks for deciding to continue. But, remember it doesn’t have to be every day. Give yourself, your job, your family the time they may need and cut back to twice, maybe three times a week if that’s what’s needed.

I agree with SFGate. You’re a great addition to the wine world who would be sorely missed.

Thanks for keeping the show going Gary I couldn’t imagine what I would do without it. This is one of the most educational, entertaining and all around satisfying video blogs I’ve ever come across. Cheers from the Niagara wine region!

Oh damn, I am a week behind and all of a sudden I decide to skip ahead to find myself in this mess! At least it has been resolved, and sounds like the future is bright. Maybe I won’t bother watching last week’s episodes, might make me sad. Keep it up, great work!

    From Toronto, Canada

  290. January 26, 2008

YAAAAAAAAAY I was so sad when I heard you say you were only going to do 7 more episodes! I had to come watch this one to see what was up.

    GV,
Great news on keeping WLTV going. Really appreciate the time, dedication, education and passion you bring EVERY DAY! Thanks again for bringing a big red to the tasting…I have never tried the Sagrantino grape and I love Brunellos and Borolo’s…

Again, thanks for all you do on WLTV!

Although it’s outside my $ comfort zone, I clicked on the Paolo Bea; it’s sold out. I was seriously going to drive up, snatch a bottle, and have it for my birthday, you made it sound that exceptional. oh, well.
In the meantime, you are my daily gift to myself; after a long day at work, I turn the sound up and listen to WLTV…something to look forward to. You are welcome to a vacation, but PLEASE, don’t burn out!

    Dear GV,

i have forgotten something quite important in my last statement a few

hours ago: point out the unbiased and not sales-related character of your

    rating procedure-

i know you do not have to, but: just tell them.. and: other blogs: they ain´t

got knowledge nor charisma. vayniacs have it or try to get in a gentle, subtle

way. PS: what about german red wine ” burgundy style (pfalz, friedrich becker )”, not the light “ahr style”?

tell us, plenty are waiting across the atlantic!

    QOTD-best non-family thing I’ve done?

Thank you GV. In every comment and every email I send you I tell you to keep it real, and for coming through on that I thank you. You can be honored and humbled by your fans and their support of you, but I don’t think you should be surprised or taken aback. We find joy and purpose through people and our relationships with others; so most of us “know” you through a computer screen – so what? It’s a connection we have formed through what you have provided. It just makes sense that we come out in droves to convince you to keep WLTV going.

QOTD: The greatest non-family thing has been being a Notre Dame cheerleader. By far, it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.

    Keep it real GV.

  296. January 26, 2008

Thanks for keeping the show going – but honestly a show every day is a bit much for anyone to continue on a prolonged basis. You may want to cut back some, maybe to a couple of times a week and get some personal time for yourself.

QOTD: I volunteer coaching martial arts to college students at UNC Chapel Hill, several times a week for over 10 years. It is rewarding to see them progress but tough when they graduate. Similarly you must have a lot of pride building “The Vayniac Nation’”. It is hard to get away from it.

Glad to have you staying. I hope you still read my e-mail of a couple of days ago, otherwise I might write again since you’ve got me so pumped! Last night at dinner I ordered an Albariño because of your raves. I enjoyed it a lot so thank you.

QOTD: I drove around the U.S. for six weeks in the summer of 2002, visited a ton of National Parks and just loved the road trip.

Oh Gary! I’m so glad you are staying!!!! I was kind of flipping out yesterday, but know I’m content in knowing I’ll have you around for many episodes to come. Outside my family, I guess I’m proud of my music accomplishments. I work as a jazz singer, and I’ve sung with a couple of my musical idols. That was incredible.

    Gary,
I’m glad you are continuing with the show. I enjoy watching it and I use your show as ‘homework’ for students in my wine classes. I’m doing a class right now on improving the wine palate, with plenty of Episode 148 flavor to it!
Keep up the good work, you are helping wine drinkers up here in Albany.

I was getting worried there, Gary! I only found this show 2 weeks ago! It would have been tragic to end it now. Keep up the good work. I can’t wait until I can find the time to make a trip up to the Wine Library.

Great to hear that the thunder will be brought on a continuous basis.

QOTD: Is anything great without family?

  309. January 26, 2008

    Lisa Marie

Thank you for bringing the thunder, Gary! Cheers to many more episodes!!!
QOTD: I would have to say that 2 things (other than family and those I love) make up my most valued projects and experiences: writing and traveling. Writing is SO rewarding for me; and I’m currently writing a Sci Fi novel (Working name: “Fever Dream Prophets” Look for it in a couple years!). And I LOVE traveling, meeting new people, bearing witness to other cultures. Top of my list are India and Eastern Europe.

  310. January 26, 2008

    lifestooshort

Yeah, here’s the thing about the possibility of your “leaving” the show: You’ve basically created a small army of wine zombies who would hunt you down like you were a shorter, much whiter, Will Smith. I wouldn’t advise it. Because, see, they LOVE you *now*, but leave them in the lurch, without their daily dose? And, dude, I don’t know if you watch the Wire, but you DO NOT wanna cut off a crackhead–not pretty. Also, and as head librarian there’s the, ah, “much less important” issue of revenue generation > w i n k

Ahh…that was scary for a few moments there. Obviously good to hear you’ve decided against the unthinkable (for now at least!)

  314. January 26, 2008

I love Sangratino. I was thrilled that you were so enthuesed about these wines. You had great descriptors for these wines.

QOTD: I have been involved with a Gulf Coast condominium, serving as Treasurer and Board Member for the last six years. We had good times the first year, and then Hurricane Ivan hit us dead center. It was one of the most difficult situations I have ever been in, but the experience taught me more lessons than any thing I have ever been through. Struggling together with 93 other unit owners for the 3-4 years required for our recovery from the storm built relationships and learning experiences that literally substantially changed my basic perspectives on life. I am now completing my sixth year as Treasurer, and had intended to not stand for re-election….simply because I thought it was time for new blood to take the helm. After extended discussions with so many of the owners, I realized how much I had come to enjoy the experience of working with this great group of people, and decided to stand for re-election. I think I feel like you do about the Veyniacks.

GV So very happy to hear that your are staying. I also want to backup what another vainiac said. Feel free to take vactions and don’t kill yourself with tapings… We understand, we will miss you but it will make the return show better.

QOTD: getting involved with a local group in my area. I have meet some really great people and we have done some really cool things.

QOTD: Since I consider my fiends my family, I would have to say ski or perhaps walk the streets of Berlin with someone I had only just met or perhaps walk out half a mile on the exposed shore at low tide in Alaska or walk barefoot on the high mountain tundra in the back country of Denali Alaska.

I knew you couldn’t quit WLTV, so I wasn’t really scared, but I’m glad you’re sticking around. I’m also glad you’ll be coming to Boston very soon. I’m excited to attend my first big tasting and to meet you(of course).

QOTD: I’m trying to let things roll off my back more since I used to be terribly stressed out, and life is SO much better when you’re happy more often. There’s nothing better than happiness, right?

QOTD: Volunteering with the Arizona Special Olympics during their winter games. The athletes had such a positive attitude and it made an impact on my life that I draw on those memories 10+ years later.

    GARY!!!!

Thanks for sticking around. I’ve been steadily lurking for about a little over half a year and i think it’s damn time i start participating. I am very happy about your decision.

I just moved to san francisco from oklahoma and am completely broke and unemployed. But as soon as i score a job and save some change i’m going to buy a bottle of the Paolo Bea Sangrantino Montefalco and kill a baby cow!

I’m not sure what the best non-family thing i’ve ever done has been. I’ve given homeless people money and rides… i’ve done volunteer work various organizations…. but i can’t say i’ve saved a life. How can i save lives? Maybe i can get a job doing that.

I am so relieved that you and the Mottster are not going anywhere for a while. I felt like I was just handed a reprieve from the governor. I’m just starting to get into wines, and this show has a alot to do with it. I’m no CKC, but my budget doesn’t allow me to play too much with the different wines.

QOTD: I flew down to New Orleans on the anniversary of Katrina to try to produce a photo book about the city’s continuing struggles. Although I was unable to get a book published, I made some incredible friends, and was able to help by sharing their stories. An incredible experience.

    Hi.

I quit my fairly well-paying, professional job teaching public school to pursue a career in wine six months ago. You are one of the people who convince me I have made a good choice. Cancelling all the wine snobs, snotty food people, and poseurs in the world, you and your show keep me going and make me confident. Thanks, Gary.

Gary! In one episode I felt like Christmas was cancelled and then all my Christmases came at once. I, and many others are eternally grateful that you are still doing the show. There is no one else out there who will say it as it is. Why are people so afraid to say that wa ine smells like bug spray!

I can think of many great celebrations with my gf. Hopefully my Australia day bbq tomorrow will come close.

I’m so happy to hear you’ll be sticking around!

QOTD: went to Africa (western Kenya) for a month last year. Worked in a mission hospital and then a few days of safari. By far, the best thing I’ve done that hasn’t been with family. The girlfriend (at the time) was there, so that probably fudges it a little bit. But still….awesome

Extremely happy to know that you plan to continue with the Thundershow . ThankYou Gary!

Well, I was about to buy the Paolo right after the show. It was in stock in a couple of stores around my place. However, for some reason I delayed the actual act for a day… and poooof.. out of stock! Everywhere! It is even not to be found in the inventories anymore. Thunder-show does seem to have some effect on wine sales after all ;) .

If I sat in your seat……. I’d take no email.. None!!!

Thanks for education on Sagrantino, GV. Luckily, I found the Paolo Bea at my local stop. Had I not had a cop behind me, I was thiiisss close to popping this bad boy open on the way home.

QOTD – Took an entire month off work and drove across the US Thelma and Louise style. My only regret is that I wasn’t into wine then or I woulda hit some wineries along the way.

ps. Glad to see you’re hanging around. Now take some time off w/Lizzy and enjoy life.

pps. Check out episode 228. You made a statement about the Pats picking up Moss and how this season “might” turn out. You’re not only a great teacher of all things wine, you’re friggin’ clairvoyant.

Gary Vaynerchuk = Wine Guy/Bookie. I think that has a nice ring to it….Don’tcha think?

    GV,
I respect and appreciate your decision to continue WLTV. Having recently made a dramatic career change I understand how difficult it is to balance life and work. Trusting myself and pusuing true happiness (what I wanted not what I thought I should do)gave me the courage to leave my profession. Now I am pursuing a career in the wine industry and your passion and commitment provides me with significant motivation and hope for a fullfilling career. THANK YOU!
QOTD: One of the best things I have ever done was to follow my heart to South Africa. I had the amazing opportunity to tour several wineries and see some magnificant landscapes that 8 years later are still solid in my memory. This trip also ignighted a passion for wine, that despite keeping dormant for 8 years, now shines brilliantly.

    Thanks again!

I lurk. Why-cuz I don’t always watch the day of! usually the next, riding the train, ipod in hand, freaking out fellow passengers with frequent outbursts. Your opening today (well Friday) brought me out, for the second time ever! Watching since episode #6. Spreading the gospel to all my friends (The Vayner-word that is) Thanks for everything hoss. What a day to to roll out the Sagrantino! Got a bottle of Bea Rosso de Vea 03. You tried it?

Hi Gary, just wanted to say thanks for the show. i just stumbled across it yesterday, and have watched about a dozen episodes, hard to tear myself away. Not sure if that qualifies me as a lurker, but just in case, that was me peeking in through the window. What a great resource, your archive list is amazing. My hope is to keep current while simultaneously going backwards in time with you, and i’m looking forward to the challenge. If you are feeling squeezed by trying to keep up feeding the monster, maybe you could skip wednesdays or something. I can say this because i haven’t gotten completely addicted yet, you’re still just a recreational drug for me, not sure how i will feel in a week or two or however long it takes to me to need fresh injections of wltv.
    to your health!

Okay, ya got me! Been lurking for about a month on WLTV. First time post today.

Keep up the good work Gary, Mott, team WLTV and the Vayner-nation!

QOTD: Joining Associated Students (student government) in college. I met my future (and now) wife within 2 weeks of joining. We also met my best friend through A.S. and he eventually hooked us both up with our current post-college jobs. Talk about life’s random connections…

And now we’ve connected with Gary and the Vayner-nation.

    Sagrantino!!!
Love this wine! A holiday in Umbria is highly recommended. Montefalco is small but cool. Loved Spoleto the best, Assisi more popular but close behind.
    Ciao!

    Fiorentina!

    hey gary-
had to watch this episode again….I’ve been feelin’ my roots and having more Italian wines, but have yet to run into the Sag. di Mont. wines. I might just have to order one from you (can you ship to CA by the way?)

    Again….I’m happy that you’re staying!

QotD – There really isn’t much, but I’d have to say Painting.
Every once in awhile I Paint…it’s helps me to relieve stress and that’s way I do it…not because it looks good or because people ask for it,but simply because it makes me feel better when I’m done.

Been a lurker since WLTV inception, but have to say I’m very happy you’re continuing with the show. You have great impact on wine education and have made me even more passionate about wine–if that’s possible.

Thanks for bringing Sagrantino on to my radar and continuing with the Thunder show!

I’m coming out to you first, GV. I’m a lurker.

To be completely explicit, I’m coming out today as a lurker only. I still love women. And wine.

    Roope

Hi Gary, I’ve also been a lurker from something like episode 230 onwards, but just wanted to comment NOW for the first time: the thought of more episodes in the future makes me very happy. Thank you and the best to all of you. All things will pass, eventually, but hold on to the good things while you can. :)

Gary, your amazing you really are. i hope you dont think that the show is getting tired. i have blown through almost 400 episodes in 3 months, and i am still looking forward to all the new ones. if i new how to bake i’d send you a nice pumpkin pie, but i dont so i guess your just out of luck.

GV, I was watching this show at work, during some down time. When you started the show and explained you were going to continue on with the Thunder.. .I had the largest smile roll out of my face. My co-workers were like, “What’s with the smile?”. And I’m like, “The thunder has returned!”. :) )

QOTD: For myself. . . many, many, many moons ago, I took a monkey off my back. It was one of the hardest, but most necessary things to do. And now I live a cleaner life than ever before.

To health, family and the thunder show, Cheers!.

Thank god you’re back! In the off chance you read this, I just want to let you know that you are the reason I drink wine at all. I used to hate it, but then I heard something about how you’re meant to decant wine, so I searched on Youtube and found your decanting video, and ever since then I’ve been trying so many different kinds of wine. All to myself too, because none of my friends like it. And because of you I bore them to tears when talking about different kinds of wine all the time…

So thankyou Gary, thankyou so much. Take a break if things are getting too much because despite what you say, it’s you that’s changing the wine world. Not us.

QOTD: When I went on holiday to Russia. I saw St Petersburg and Moscow, and they are the most beautiful and interesting places I’ve ever been. And it was in the middle of the winter and I’ve never seen that much snow before…it was crazy

So delighted to see you’ve come to your senses :~P and are going to continue WLTV … Certainly have learnt an enormous amount from you and love seeing the show while I’m preparing dinner during the week.

QoTD: Wow, that’s too “big” a QoTD … So, I’ll, instead, answer “What’s the greatest thing you’ve done in the last week?” … Which, I imagine, was eating a *delicious* dark chocolate bar with little bits of candied orange peel in it. Sensational … if addictive.

  368. January 27, 2008

    Eric A.

Wow, Sagrantino… not for everyone, in my book. I found one at Trader Joe’s for about $20 and it was good, but seriously powerful, seriously olive-smelling, seriously tannic. I’ll try them again in the future, but not unless I’m eating, like, a raw steak…with dirt on top!

  369. January 27, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Going to med school. Thanks for continuing the show. I enjoy it and would be sad to see you stop after little more than a year. You have a lot more wine to share with us. Sangrantino must be a stealth wine because I spent a week in Umbria and didn’t ever hear of this wine. Will have to try it. Again thanks for what you do.

  370. January 27, 2008

GV — Lurker here. Just had to stop after hearing your announcement 4 min into episode 394 and leave a comment to say thank you! I’m very glad to hear that you’ll continue with the show. I’m a ckc and you have been my introduction to the wine world. You’ve taught my girlfriend and me so much, and brought a ton of enjoyment to our lives. I’m no longer intimidated by wine, and am happy to spend 45 minutes browsing the wine racks at our local store. Thanks again! Back to the show…

QOTD: The four months I spent in Australia back in 2003 on a working holiday. Seriously… life changing.

I’m so very happy you’re staying, Gary. I know it’s a lot of work and we all truly appreciate it. You’re a class act.

  374. January 27, 2008

THANK YOU SO MUCH GARY!!! We all really appreciate what you do and what you stand for. Los Angeles loves Gary and me and my family are all so thrilled that you’re going to keep going as we watch your show together when eating dinner and drinking wine together! My fiance and I visited Wine Library in NJ this past December a few days before New Year’s and we loved the store, loved the staff, loved the selection, but most importantly we love you and everything you bring to all of us. Thanks again Gary – we don’t know what we’d do without you!!!

QOFD: Best non-family related thing I’ve done has been my volunteer teaching in the deep countryside of China. Nice to help people.

Good that you are going on. If you feel it is a burden to do the show, maybe do it less each week. Everyday is alot of wine to taste.

Gary, thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything that you do for us. This show is absolutely amazing to me. I am definitely a wine geek and learning about wine and discovering new wines is truly a passion of mine. My wife and I now are thinking about taking more “wine trips” in the near future, and wine is something that we enjoy together. I cannot express how grateful I am for you and your crew (Mott!). Thanks in part to you, I am starting my own wine tastings with close friends of mine, and spreading the passion that you help fuel. You are truly radool.

Wow, the hot girl dorm room comment was an instant for me…bingo, took me back. memories.

    Awesome #384.

QOTD: Volunteered my time to help translate for doctors, giving free medical attention to poor areas around San Felipe, MX. Then some ‘doctors’ tried to sneak me into bars, as I was the only underage one on the trip…guess 14 was not the new 18 back then. Great feeling that day, not the night, but the day.

Thanks again GV for your work/fun time. I guess you cannot call it work if you enjoy doing it.

    You want dry…
I just watched a Wine Spectator Podcast, “WS: Inside Wine Spectator’s Tasting Department”

What terrific news; in honour of your decision, I’m going to send you my own copy of the wine book I promised you earlier – I’ll find another later…

I second the advice Pamela offered for continuing the show, as well as her sentiments about the show.

QOTD A couple of years ago I’d have mentioned the volunteering I’ve committed to since retiring. Very satisfying, but perhaps growing a little routine now. So, taking a longer view back, I’d say the greatest thing I remember is the last-minute chance to join a couple of other friends in a ski trip to Whistler/Blackcomb for a week. Face-wide smiles all week. Up to Seventh Heaven every day. Talk about a natural high!! Great camaraderie, good wine, good eats (I’m no cook, but was happy to be dishwasher).

  381. January 28, 2008

    Justin G

Gary. I’ve been a lurker for a few months now and was ready to throw my laptop against the wall when I heard you considering ending the show. Now I’m glad I didn’t, because I wouldn’t have been able to watch this episode! I really appreciate what you do and all the work mott and everyone else does.

QOTD: going on a nationwide tour with a Drum and Bugle Corps.

GV, great news! Glad the Thundershow will live on…suggestion if WLTV gets to be too much ever think about only doing one or two shows a week to “lessen” the load? You can broadcast Tuesday and Fridays or something like that.

Happy you will still do it, but don’t want you to burn out either…

Thanks again for all your hard work,

QOTD: Outside of family, was playing rugby for the South of England team many moons ago. Ruined my sholder in that game so havn’t played since. Bit of a double edged sword but can’t complain how my life have turned out since.

Wow….miss a couple episodes and the sky starts falling! Gary you have the most energy of anyone I think I have ever seen……a lot of passion for what you do….I can see how someone could get burned out doing it 5 times a week….and need something new to keep that spark going….however, we would all be at a loss for a daily glass of wine mania…very selfish…I know…Glad to hear you are going to keep at it….maybe cut back…I know I could understand that! Great episode today….a new wine I have never tried and will now seek out! Thanks! :-)

THANK GOD you are staying Gary. I had a huge freak out when I heard the rumor, and immediately watched this episode to hear what was going on. 8 month lurker coming out to say thanks for all you do for us!!

Gary we are really glad to hear that the show will go on. Also wanted to say I loved the Leocadie Fernand Averoux 2006 from the last show, bought a bottle on Saturday and opened the bottle Sunday afternoon. Great recommendation.

    Continue the good work Gary..

Gary, absolutely love the show and consider you to be a part of my family too! Thanks so very much for the show. It’s 20 minutes that I look forward to each and every day.

QOTD: Greatest non-family involved thing I’ve ever done was a Mpls->Chicago AIDSRide. The unconditional love I felt from everyone involved – riders, crew, and residents of the host towns was humbling to say the least. One of the best weeks of my life.

Gary – Outstanding episode on Sagrantino di Montefalco. I am a lover of these wines and will be in Montefalco for the Settimana Enologica festival in late September – for the release of the 2005 vintage. Go to my website for more info on Sagrantino, Montefalco and the Villa Pambuffetti… where you MUST stay if you ever visit Montefalco. By the way, the 1998’s are just now settling down and smoothing out. Try Sagrantino Montefalco with Picorino cheese and apricot jam. Fabulous.
I couldn’t be happier that you made the decision to keep on keeping on! Send a reply and I will send you a pdf off my article on Sagrantino Montefalco.

Gee….Super News that the Thunder Show continues, but on the otherhand,
You got to think about Yourself & Family! If you got to cut back on
the number of episodes per week, we understand. You’re a busy Guy and
we sure don’t want You to burn-out. Maybe do one or two episodes a week,
    tapeing them and such.

Just found your website for the first time. Was googling info about Kris Curran leaving SeaSmoke. When I ran across your 05 SeaSmoke tasting show. Fun Stuff. I will check back from time to time. Kris Curran to Foley Vineyards! Was never impressed with there wines. Isnt it owned now by the Monster buying up wineries in that area? Hopefully she makes an improvment there. It’s great to here that you will continue to do the show as long as you can. Your insights are helpful to the world of wine and life.
QOTD:The trip that I went on to mainland China four years ago. It was a truly eye-opening experience and gave me a view on what so many people on our planet live like on a daily basis.

You are mad, you do realise that don’t you? :) So the show continues, good, can’t disagree with that idea (but I wouldn’t object if you cut is back to 1 or 2 a week if you get busy).

I loved this show, educator Vaynerchuk – a grape and a region I’d heard nothing about.

QOTD – Depends on the definition of greatness? (…and by ruling out family it doesn’t leave much). 2 hours tramping around broken wreckage and burnt-out buildings in 1988 came to mind, but I was there by chance and couldn’t do much – there’s been no real defining moment to my life (so far). So basically I’ll go with being a tolerant, understanding and reasonably kind human being who treats other people with a fair amount of respect and helpfulness – if everyone did something similar the world would be a much greater place.

GV: My first knowledge of Sangrantino was on my honeymoon in 1998 when I had a bottle of 1960 (yes that’s right 1960) Sangrantino at Medeo Evo restaurant in Assisi, Italy for approximately $20US (yes that right as well.)Unbelievable how well this wine tasted with that age in the bottle. This followe by the next day when my lovely bride and I were driving from Assisi to Montalcino and happened upon, inadvertently, the little town of Montefalco during the Sunday festival where all of the residence had formed with flower petals hundreds of “murals” on the main street. An incredible unexpected image that will stay with me forever. The tasting room was open and I purchased several bottles to bring home, having been so impressed with it the night before. Truly one of the great wines in the world. I haven’t thought about this for some time now, it being reawakened with your show. This leads me to my main point which is that while the Thunder Show and WLTV may have started as simply a guy tasting and recommending some wines in a back room it has evolved into something much greater than its original purposes and frankly something much greater than simply tasting wine, you have created and are the catylst of a “community” in the true sense of the word: a group of otherwise unconnected, random, disparate people who share experiences, histories, opinions, thoughts and life together all who look forward to each new episode as eagerly as they might be going home to kiss their kids at the end of the day. A true gift to all involved. Don’t let that slip away. Glad to have you “back on board” for the journey.

I got back from vacation to hear your leaving, i was a little depressed, half thinking about going to Boston to see you, even though it would be a little bit of a fiscal disaster, those vacation bills wont pay themselves… wheres that stimulus package.

Anyway, thanks, i talk about you all the time to friends and family, you have greatly increased my knowledge of wine and now i enjoy spreading that wisdom to others.

And, I had my first Primitivo last night thanks to you. Had it been a blind tasting I would have guessed it was a Bordeaux. I liked it, but it did not remind me of Italy or Zinfandel. Thanks for opening my eyes to more and more possibilities and getting me to try new things.

    Gary,
I haven’t been catching the show regularly the last couple of weeks, still trying to get settled after the move. To echo everyone else’s statements, I’m very glad to hear that you are going to continue the Thunder Show. You’ve been a great resourse for us all, but we understand all the work you put in. If it gets to be too much, cut back to a show or two a week to give yourself some breathing room. We’ll still be here for you.

QOTD: Probably volunteering for the Special Olymipcs.

That is one of the reasons I love the show because you put family first, and being that I am in the conversion process from a CKC to a real person I am realizing that more and more. She is an amazing woman and I am thankful for every minute with her. I hope that everyone else gets to have something similar with the ones they love. Much love and Respect GV glad to hear you are going to continue the show.

Thanks for the wake-up on the varietal. I’m familiar with the area, but never even heard of the grape. And this being your show, you get to be a little wishy-washy sometimes whenever you feel it, no?

QOTD: Honestly, probably becoming a foodie. It impacts my life in a positive way every single day, makes people around me happy, keeps me healthy, and I too enjoy the joy of people around the world giving a crap about what I do, think, etc when it comes to food.

    Glad you’re sticking around.

Cut it down to three episodes a week and hire someone to filter through your emails and reply to the ones that you get over and over again. I think people would understand.

I think it’d be much cooler for you to be innovating in the wine and web worlds rather than getting burned out answering emails! Think about the big picture, people don’t expect Conan or Ellen to read every email that’s sent to them. You’re not there yet but it’s not worth burning yourself out or letting your family suffer from it.

Good news about the Thunder Show!! (But then, I never believed you were REALLY pulling the plug.)

QOTD: The greatest thing I’ve ever done that didn’t involve family – hmmm – I guess that would be touring Bordeaux several years ago on a side trip during a business trip to Europe. It was very cool. Oh yeah, and I’ve turned several friends into wine geeks now, which is so much fun.

This sounds like a great region *IF* I could find it.

BTW, I’m the lurker who first tried Tannat from Uruguay. Guess I’m no longer a lurker. E-mail.

But I tried a few Morellino di Scansano wines a few years ago…maybe five and thought them great. A little expensive being 20 bones US give or take a few. I have no idea what they go for now. Italian wines in my county have gone up tremendously in the past few years, no matter the worth of the Euro vs the US dollar. And my county is far more expensive than the rest of the state of Maryland…won’t even go into that, well, except to say the County is importer, distributer, and reseller of ALL alcohol. Even local breweries have to sell to the county, pay tax, buy it back, pay tax and sell it, pay tax.

I’d like to try some of those Sagrantino wines even if I did have to pay $12 or so over what everyone else pays. I take it the name comes from the color…blood like.

Yeah, you were going to quit at 400. Give us a break.

Gotta agree with you about the Bea (in case you’re wondering it’s pronounced Bay-uh). I tasted that wine not too long ago in a lineup including some great Burgs (Hubert Lignier, Denis Mortet, etc.) and the ‘03 Pavillon Rouge and my reaction was similar to yours.

    It totally blew me away!

Yes, it’s expensive but anytime you can get one of the world’s greatest wines for under $100 that’s not all that bad. I need to get this stuff on my list ASAP.

I work as a bartender. This past New Year’s Eve, after work, the entire staff went to the boss’ house, and drank the leftover sparkling wine. We stayed up for about 24 hours, played Rock Band/Guitar Hero, watched TV, made steak and eggs for breakfast, more booze, and hung out.

There has been nothing greater than the dorm experience. When you talk about love and family, Gary, there’s not a lot better than living in close quarters with close friends, and spending endless quality time together.

    Thanks for keeping up WLTV!

GV – glad that you are going to keep the show rolling!
I had never even heard of Sagrantino – I will definitely seek it out.

That is a very tough QOTD! My best times are with my family!

But one of the coolest things I have ever done is water ski in an Alpine lake in France – Lac Annecy. There was nothing like looking around and seeing massive mountaine peeks while I glided across the extraordinarily clean, cool water.

Thanks for taking my advice and trying our local Sagrantino. There’s plenty more that cost a lot less though, but you gotta come to Italy to find them. It’s a great steak wine. Enjoy!

    Gary,
I just watched your reviews on the Sagrantino di Montefalco wines.
Several years ago, I was sent to Montefalco to eat in a specific Umbrian Ristorante by Lidia Bastianich.
Boy, does she know where to eat.

The house wine was a Sagrantino from Arnaldo Caprai.
They used it to make a purple-tinged strangozzi pasta.
They braised a Cinghiale (wild boar shoulder) in it.
Oh, they also poured it for us as out wine with lunch.
It was nice to watch you “fall in love” on camera.
    Welcome to the cub!

Rosso di Montefalco? 100% Sagratino is magnificent, but what about blends featuring this mighty grape?

Gary, this was such a valuable episode to me and my vino loving friends. I would love to know some other sagrantino wines, including blends. I found one excellent blend: would you review –and stock at WL– the “Santambra” Montefalco Rosso 2005 made by Tiburzi? A 65% Sangiovaynerchuk, 20% Cabernet, and 15% Sagrantino; this wine is so very good. It has the bigness and depth of some young Barolos I sampled at a recent Italian Wine Merchants tasting, but it’s rather affordable at ~$17 (chanced upon it at Chelsea Wine Vault in my office building, after not finding it at WL).

WOW, WOW, WOW, you are right Gary, this is one of the best wines ever I’ve had from Italy. The aromas, the flavors, full of fruit……..I had to go and buy lots more of this wine,
Thanks for your review on this wine and turning me on to something different.

very amazing! and it’a a pity that the vine produced in Umbria is not well kwon all over the world as – for example – the tuscan one… overall you can oten find farmhouses as for example http://www.agriturismo-quattro-stagioni.it where you can buy excellent wine but home made

If the sagrantino breaks the bank, try a Montefalco Rosso. Yes, you are getting less sagrantino in the blend, but you still get the gamey, plumy aromatics from the primarily sangiovese (60% or so) wine rounded out with montepulciano (30% or so) and sagrantino (10% or so). Caprai makes a good affordable Montefalco Rosso, but Paolo Bea makes the best, called “Piparello”

QOTD: This is one of those hard ones because you try to go back so far and either cant think of anything from long ago, or conflict with all the things up to this point in your life. I think Im going to have to go with donating some money to the hurricane Katrina victims. Every little bit helps them, and I know that Im well off enough that I can afford to give them some of my money. I can only hope it went to the right places.

    G Man Chuk,

Sick episode. One of the reasons I love you brosef. You’re a good man, doing what God has in store for you on this rock. Sales, marketing, bs constantly, we all understand. It’s what we do. However, the passion is amazing. NEVER….N-E-V-E-R let that dissapate, for if you do, than everything else dies a slow death around it. Kind of like infected vines…

I love your show, and although I wasn’t watching you at this particular point when it came out, I have been trying to watch an old show, or 2, or 3 a night to catch up on all I’ve missed. You’ve taught me some serious shiz the past couple months.

QOTD: I help every winter with the Toys for Tots program during Christmas time here in Chicago. We hold fundraisers all over the place and collect toys to which we distribute to kids during the holidays who have virtually NOTHING. Many, many, people in this country don’t realize just how wonderful they have it. And this endeavor I take part in each Xmas reminds me of just how damn good my life is…..especially when you go deliver it to the kids on xmas morning who have nada.

Just had my first experience with Sagrantino last Thursday. Wetasted 3 different ones from Tabarrini. They are massive, explosive wines, just as you said. He gave me one of them with half the bottle left. I just re-tasted it tonight, 6 days after being opened, and was amazed at how good it was drinking. Unbelievable. Still very fragrant, and while the black fruit flavors may have softened, it was still beautiful. Probably the biggest wines I have tasted this year. BTW… I scored that wine 92 originally, just after being opened, and 94 six days later.
