First your dad’s birthday, then AJ’s. Now we need your mother and Lizzy’s. Come on, you know we want to see them too. Great show and down to earth, real. Honesty is nice to see today and AJ was.
QOTD: Nobody older, but my younger brother put me to shame regarding “greatness”.

  31. January 28, 2008

    Marta M

AJ, you’re really cute guy :) Happy birthday and hope to see you again in the show.
QOTD: No, as the matter of fact I am an older sister and my bro is exactly in AJ’s age. We are best friends, spend a lot of together, even work in the same company. But unfortunately I can’t get him into wine. :/

awww, how cute with the brotherly bickering.

QOTD: No, I am the oldest sibling in my family, BUT I am lucky enough to have three awesome little brothers. Dan, Paul and Bobo – I love you! (no, my brother’s name isn’t really Bobo. It’s Bryan, and that’s a long story)

    Great show Gary and AJ!

QotD: I’m the youngest sibling in my family. I’m the youngest of 4 brothers, one of which I had the pleasure of enjoying the 2008 Royal Rumble in HD with my three nieces!

    Happy B-Day, A.J. Rock on.

5 older sibs. Of course the are as amazing. I would not have the love for hip hop without David, the love for knowledge without Duncan and the love for humor asd Mary.

    Happy Birthday AJ!
Great example in this show. Well, a lot of great examples, but it’s interesting to see a really high dollar producer score a GV 92 after 21yrs of cellaring. It’d be interesting to know what Gary and the Pop’s thought of this wine when buying and just before opening.

QOTD: 3 older siblings. Eamon, Karen, and Deirdre all rock it hard! Love them so much!

Happy Birthday AJ. Wine drinking gets more fun and probably even better away from your big Bro.

    John Farrin

I am blown away by how centered your whole family is. Here’s AJ who’s on his famous brother’s video blog and he’s confident enough in his own skin to hold his own. I know that you’re dying to be Michaelangelo on that blank canvas and give him all your knowledge and passion for wine like, RIGHT NOW! Maybe my favorite episode.Happy Birthday AJ!

QOTD: I’m the mistreated 3rd child of six :) Seriously, my older siblings (1 sister, 1 brother) showed me, by their example, how important learning and thinking are and, for that, I will always be in their debt. (Obviously, one thing they didn’t teach me was how to avoid run-on sentences) What the hell, I still love them.

  50. January 28, 2008

I’m the oldest so no older siblings for me hehe.

GREAT SHOW GUYS!! Nice to meet you AJ :)

This was super fun for me because my little brother’s birthday is today too! :) His name is Randy, and he was born in 1977 (so a decade older). I can’t get him to drink any wine with me, though.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AJ!!

  52. January 28, 2008

What a fun show! Welcome to the nation AJ.

QOTD: Sadly I havn’t spoken to my brother in 15 years. He’s no Gary I can tell you that!

QOTD: No older siblings/cousins on either side of the family – consider me the experimental baby.

BTW – it would be entertaining to hear Sasha’s 120.

  57. January 28, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

Happy birthday, AJ – QOTD, two older brothers and an older sister. One of them has been pretty awesome, but I’d best not say which!

    Happy Birthday AJ!
I’m in that same boat as you right now, turned 21 not too long ago, and I’m still struggling a bit in the wine world. I have definitely found a few I like, but these exact smells and tastes are still alluding me. Keep at it man! And when are we gonna see an ep with Sasha, AJ, and Gary in one? That would be badass!
QOTD: I’m an only child :-(

  61. January 28, 2008

    MARKSHARKY

Watch out Gary your little bro is very humble hey wait a minute maybe you could train hime to do the WLTV when your too busy… you know kieep it in the family man!

GV; I loved the honesty of your younger brother.. seems like it runs in the family. Kudos to Mom & Dad. Happy B-Day AJ.
QOTD; My older brothers are pretty cool most of the time.

  64. January 28, 2008

Happy Birthday AJ! Great show, it was honestly touching to see how close you two are. Nice choice of wines too. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone try a wine from California older than 10 years. Very interesting. Good luck in everything AJ.

QOTD: I have one older sister, but she is just over a year older than me. She is an awesome sister. She made me feel cool in school because her and her friends, who were two grades above me, would always say hi to me.

  65. January 28, 2008

    Dave Canada

That was really cool….you guys are like bob and doug mackenzie from Strange Brew
Qotd – Your bro’ is a tough act to follow….I’ll leave it at that.

Sadly in my heathen ways I think I stepped back from hard drinking at age 21. After watching this epi I long for the days of an unjaded palate. Cheers and Happy birthday to AJ.

QOTD: She tries. Biggups to Lisa Hope!!

  68. January 28, 2008

QOTD: nope… oldest, but I hope my younger sibs do develop a taste for vino!

And with my first post i would like to say Happy Birthday AJ!
I just turned 21 last month and it was magical.

QOTD: Unfortunately I do not have any siblings but I have been blessed with awesome cousins who might as well be brothers and sisters.

  72. January 28, 2008

    Sue Z.

Happy B-day AJ! QOD – I have a few younger brothers but only one who’s into wine like me. When we get together, he brings the Barolo and I bring the Bordeaux. What can I say other than it’s all good;-) It’s a tough job, Gary, but it’s up to us elders to train the youngsters! I consider it an honor and a responsibility:-)

  73. January 28, 2008

QOTD: Like AJ, I too have a bro who’s older than me by 11 years. He’s been a fantastic brother who’s always guided and looked out for me. Unfortunately he doesn’t share my same passion of wine, however, we’ve spent many conversations over a nice cigar. I have to give him a shout out because he’s in Afghanistan right now kickin some arse. Also a shout out to my sis who’s 8 years my elder…she’s completely awesome.

  78. January 28, 2008

    Little Jonny H

That show was FANTASTIC!!! There’s nothing quite like a little bro to bring out the best in all of us. I rreally liked the wine choices, I’ve brought my older brother (26 YO) on to the wine scene a bit, and it’s always very intersting to if his tastes develop the same way mine did when I started out. I think AJ should come back on the show every month so we can watch his palate develop :)

QOTD: My older bro is almost as cool as GV (only b/c I’m not 100% sure that’s even possible). He was and is an inspiration for me… and my best friend.

  79. January 28, 2008

    Tom L

    Happy Birthday, AJ.

But I, for one, being the father of four girls, do not believe for one minute that you are having your first drink at age 21. You may have Mom, Dad, Grandma and even GV fooled, but not me.

  80. January 28, 2008

    RichE

    Loved this Show
    Happy Birthday AJ !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big that was so cool to do the THUNDER SHOW with AJ. It was great to get his prospective of you and wine. I really enjoy it. My boy is 17 and have a Mayacamas cab ( his birth vintage) just waiting for his day. Ps.

  82. January 28, 2008

    Joe

    Happy Birthday AJ!

Wow, this brought back memories of when I first tasted wine. That was such a great idea with the Opus and buying it the year he was born.

    Great show Gary,
Thanks (as always) for sharing your life and wine with us.

    Happy Birthday AJ!!!
Gary, great show today. I wish my 21st could have been something like that instead of everyone buying me a different shot from the bar and the hangover that came with it.
QOTD- I am am the oldest sibling, I have two younger sisters and they are great.

  85. January 28, 2008

Happy birthday, AJ! Any time Gary has a family member on the show rocks!!!

QOTD: My older brother and sister love me very much, so I’d have to say they are just as great as Gary.

    David Dickinson

Had to come back for a 2nd post after watching the whole show:
Lots of love. So much, I’m feeling it! What a cool show – introducing AJ to wine and letting us experience it. Thanks.

QOTD: I’ve taught my older brothers about wine. They are cool, but we’re not as close as AJ and GV.

  88. January 28, 2008

Nice episode- welcome to the wine world AJ.

QOTD: no older siblings nor younger for that matter. I’m the only one.

  91. January 28, 2008

    yathink2

Happy B-Day AJ, I really enjoyed this show. I am the oldest, but I have been letting my son who will be 21 in AUG try different wines with me. Not every night and usually, not more than 1 glass. He really enjoys wine, and his palette is developing quite nicely. Thanks, for the recommendations.

  92. January 28, 2008

    Dominus

Fun, fun and more fun. Happy B’day AJ!

QOTD: Nope, I’m the oldest though I can say my younger brother is a jewel.

Now, for that sad, sad day come Sunday. t will be utter h*** watching it.

    Cheers to AJ!

P.S. Should of had the ‘87 Dominus. It would have blown his and your socks off.

  96. January 28, 2008

    Mathieu

Happy Birthday AJ! QOTD: I am the oldest in my family, but it’s funny how even though my brothers are younger I feel like they are still teaching me about life.

  97. January 28, 2008

    Arthur

    Happy Birthday AJ.

I lovet that both you and your borther for not freaking out over the bell pepper and herbal character of this wine!!! Treating vegetal characteristics in wine like the bubonic plague has led to the progeric fruit bombs.

I wonder if it would have been beneficial to AJ (and other newbies) for GV to make the distinction between “bitter” and “astringent”. I have found that first-timers may confuse “spice” and “pepper” for “bitter”.

QOTD: I am the oldest, but I must say that your relationship is to be envied. So many siblings don’t connect the way you guys seem to.

  98. January 28, 2008

    David M Roberts

Love it – Mini GV (aka AJ) – the kid’s adorable!

    Happy birthday!

Aw dude, this is awesome, my 21st is tomorrow! Although the French in me means I’ve been lovin wine for a while now. Happy birthday AJ, many happy bottles to you!
QOD: none o that sibling stuff, I’m on my own!

  100. January 28, 2008

    FJDR

Great show. It seems charisma runs in your family, although, perhaps out of necessity, AJ’s is more subdued. Favorite exchange:

GV: Is green your favorite color?
    AJV: It’s up there.

QOTD: Yes, two older sisters, both pretty cool, though I can never tell them that – I’m the bratty little brother, they’d think something was wrong if I started to act all civil toward them!

  101. January 28, 2008

    Justin

    Yo – AJ! HAPPY 21!

Too starstruck to get Browning?! Hmm… even I got it, ask your sis…..

To ALL THE VAYNERNATION This is vintage Gary & AJ. Its awesome to see these guys acting for real on here & they are the best!! Love you both!!

    PS -
Gary, think you need AJ to be a partner… he was great!

  102. January 28, 2008

    Roland

i love gruner veltliners. an interesting choice for a newbie to first try, i think a riesling kabinett would be another great choice for newbies. next maybe an australian shiraz witha little viognier blended in there would be another good choice if were drinking syrah. as for the 21 year old opus, i cant imagine liking an aged wine when i was a newbie, it took my palate some time to start to like them. to me they tasted like an old musty attic with grandpas old clothes in a box that hasnt been opened for decades. QOTD: have the coolest bro and sis ever.

  103. January 28, 2008

    Grapestompper (Dave)

Very interesting to see how AJ responded to the wines. I can remember feeling the same way about reds a long time ago. Great job!

QOD: We share the same bro! It doesn’t get much better than that!

  106. January 28, 2008

    Matt

Great show GV and AJ – but you could have at least removed the price tag from little bro’s glass!

QOTD – as the youngest of 5 I learned so much from my older brothers and siters – mostly from their mistakes. Being the baby of the family rocks on and on.

  107. January 28, 2008

    luvgrapesqueezings

    Happy Birthday AJ! QOTD: No.

  108. January 28, 2008

    Fiorentina!

    Fun Episode Gary!
I’m surprised that you didn’t bust out a 2o year tawny or an aged vintage port! However…I do have to say…bringing out the ‘87 Opus One is HUGE!

QotD – Yep I have an older brother, but he’s pretty focused on his career, so I don’t really get to talk or see him that often (maybe 3x per year). However, when I do see him we have a great time and have lots to talk about!

  109. January 28, 2008

Happy Bday, AJ. Welcome to the club of those of us where were lucky enough to do a wine tasting on our 21st!

QOTD: Newp. I’m the oldest. Oldest in my “generation” (i.e. including cousins) in fact.

  110. January 28, 2008

    Matthew R

    QOTD: Nope,I ran it all!

Happy birthday! Much better experience than I had for my twenty-first!

  111. January 28, 2008

    Kristen

Happy Bday AJ! Great show I really felt the family love :)
QOTD: I have an older bro too, it’s taken a while for our relationship to develop but he and his wife just had a baby boy so he is a little more mushy now and I am thrilled to get an open view and shout out from his heart.

    CHEERS AJ!

  112. January 28, 2008

    Tom T.

Happy BD to A.J., and QOTD – both of my sisters are younger than me, but they’d both say YES to that question ;)

  113. January 28, 2008

    Adam A

Happy birthday AJ, and as a member of the CKC I think it was bad to the bone to see someone closer to the CKC age group on the show. Also, if that was the first time AJ actually drank alcohol and tonight will be the first time he gets buck housed crazy then my name is Elmer Fudd.

    QOTD – I have 4 younger brothers

  114. January 28, 2008

    Pastafari Pirate

Nice job, AJ! Happy Birthday. Great chemistry between the two of youse.

QOTD: I have an older bro, 2.5yrs older, wicked-awesome, we’re both in our mid-40s, still get together every few weeks to hang out, B.S., and — of course! — share wine with each other. (Love ya, Jeffy Jeff.)

  115. January 28, 2008

    Karol

Happy 21st AJ. Wonderful show. My brother’s b-day today – he’s a little older than AJ- turned the big 50 today.

  116. January 28, 2008

    KyleLikesTies

Great ep. Happy b-day, AJ, and kudos for being brave enough to share you birthday sniffy sniffs with us. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a 20+-years-old wine.

QoTD: I’m the eldest, and I hope I’m half as cool as an older sibling as GV is!

  117. January 28, 2008

    FrankieTheWaffle

This was cool. One because it was a great set up to show the Youn-Ger-Chuck. The bottle they have been saving and the moment that was important to them.

It was also cool for me to see someone that was so raw. I share that total inexperience, even though I have been a WLTV fan for some time. Figure that out. One thing I can not get over is I can’t smell. That makes it difficult. Plus, I have yet to eat dirt, cigars or play-dough(?). I can only look forward to it, I guess.

  118. January 28, 2008

    late-start

great show and that espn clip is classic.

Happy Birthday AJ! Today is my Mom’s B-day too.
Gary, your little bro is even cuter than you! Nice to meet more of the fam.

QOTD:I’m the baby and my older bro tortured me growing up but now he’s very sweet to me. Funny, he started being nice to me after leaving for college when he got his first real girlfriend.

  120. January 28, 2008

    CoolHandLuke

I am the oldest so yes I am as awesome as Gary. ;) My younger brother Stephen, in SF, got me involved in wine. I was always a beer guy. He took me to a business dinner that his boss was hosting and they were buying bottles of Silver Oak like it was going out of style. Stephen had me try the wine and it was OVER! I became a wine fan. Right there and then I realized what all the hype was about.

  121. January 28, 2008

    TROC

Happy 21 AJV! Don’t let that wine rot your mind. Drink responsible and remember, the liver is not evil and doesn’t need to be punished, now get on a plane and hit Vegas.

  122. January 28, 2008

    Dave Grega

Happy Birthday AJ…I’m glad we got to chat in SF….my Little bro has his 21st in a few days….so I’ll have him watch this episode…hit me up if u make it out to nor-cal again….out

That was a lot of fun! AJ seems like a smart dude.

QOTD: I’m the oldest sibling. And yes, I’m at least as cool as Gary. ;)

  125. January 28, 2008

    Aaron Gonzales

Happy Bday A.J. Ive got a great older brother and a great younger sister as well and I will always be thankful of that. Ive got a suggestion for you as well A.J. Your brother is the MAN is the wine world, maybe you venture to the beer world and give G.V. some healthy competition. I am emursed in both worlds and think the Wine Library world would love to see the V brothers take over the beer and wine world. Just a thought.
    Aaron

  126. January 28, 2008

Awesome…Great to see a new and honest palate at work!

    RyanS

Hey AJ happy birthday. Another great show that once again demonstrates how cool your show is.
QOTD: I have a younger brother who is 8 years younger than me. It always amazes me how despite the age difference and being at different stages in our lives we are still very close.

  138. January 28, 2008

    Happy birthday, AJ!

QOTD: I have fabulous siblings (older and younger). Life would not be nearly as wonderful without them :)

  141. January 28, 2008

    Big Mac

Great show for the CKC! AJ is the future of WL TV!

  142. January 28, 2008

    Caleb

Easily one of the best WLTVs ever. This more than anything captured what Gray is about: Family, wine and opening the wine world to new people. Awesome episode Gary and AJ.

  143. January 28, 2008

    AngioRanger

Great show. Thanks for sharing the moment.
    QOTD: yeah.

  144. January 28, 2008

    chris the greek

One of many reasons i love this show is the family aspect…
your brother’s first ever legal wine tasting, amazing.

havn’t got an older sibling but on her 18th she loved dom ‘96 and an old fashioned cocktail. The bartenders lapped her up so an unbeliveable potental there.

Long live introducing family into what you love, if they like it or not

    Autoproxy

Happy 21st, buddy. Btw – joined your facebook group; best group ever! Didn’t realize you were involved when I joined it.

QOTD: Older bro…not so hot overall. But he instilled a love in the Redskins from early age, so I have to appreciate him for that. You Vaynerchuks want Pete Kendall back, don’t you?!!??!?! Yeah, I thought so.

  146. January 28, 2008

    fotodevil

QOTD: I am the oldest of 3 kids. I just turned 27 last week, and my brother and sister are 10 and 8, respectively. I’m sure their answer to the QOTD would be YES and YES ;)

You did give me a great idea though, GV. When I have kids, I will be purchasing a bottle of wine to cellar and then share on their 21st birthday.

  147. January 28, 2008

    Nickyb85

    Wonderful show, Happy Birthday AJ!

QOTD: Unfortunately, I am an only child. But it must be great to have an older brother like GV!

That was really cool guys! Good episode, and AJ was down to earth and honest – a true Vayniac!

QoTd: I only have a younger brother and he’s as awesome as awesome gets!

    Good episode!

    Wow…what a sweet episode…

That AJ kid is full of crap though…

    I have an older brother and he’s kind of a jerk…but I love him…

    Happy Bday Alan.

  153. January 28, 2008

    thepiratedoc

QOTD: Older sister – mother, lawyer, sweetheart. Her life is tougher than mine! Younger sister – manager, artist, free spirit. She deserves more than she has. Me – just a wino.

Happy birthday AJ! When are we going to see Mama V? Everyone else has made an appearance and your Dad definitely stole the show. How bout an all-Vaynerchuk episode? Gary, AJ, Sasha, and Mrs. V? It could work …

  154. January 28, 2008

    Ali D'Orsi

AJ!! You did such a great job. You’re too cute. Gary, you’re adorable too :-)

Let’s go for drinks as soon as you get back.

    Love you buddy!! Happy Birthday!

  155. January 28, 2008

    Kmarie

What a fantastic show, guys! Congratulations on your 21st birthday, AJ. I’d love to see you go travel the world, trek through Europe, South America, Australia, and obscure American countryside and send back video comments on the wines you encounter on your expeditions.

  156. January 28, 2008

    chenrys

    Great show…Happy Birthday, AJ!

QOTD: Carl has an older brother he thinks the world of. I have an older sister…we’re 20 months apart and very different but very good friends.

  157. January 28, 2008

    Scott from Salt Lake

Fun Show. Its great to see a noob’s first experience tasting wines. One day AJ will be comfortable enough to hold a wine glass by the stem.

  158. January 28, 2008

    Boog

    HAPPY B-DAY AJ!

    QOTD: I’m an only child.

  159. January 28, 2008

Happy B-Day to AJ… I am the youngest sibling as well. Cheers to you, and many more! Hi Gary! Nice show.

  160. January 28, 2008

    Grapedigger

Great show full of brotherly love…AJ, I gotta tell you that when it comes to drinking wine you’re one of the luckiest in the world to have GV as a bro and WL as your family…Enjoy every sip and come talk about your new experiences with wine on later episodes of WLTV…Cheers & Happy 21st

  161. January 28, 2008

    malliemcg

QOTD: I’m the eldest, and there is no way I’m as unbelievably radool as GV :\

Nice to see AJ on the show – always nice to see a family getting along well! I wish my intro to wine was broad, unassuming and gentle as AJ’s. If only someone had have encouraged me to trust my palate, try everything and play around and not treat wine seriously then it would not have been 5 years later before i began to enjoy it, and now love it :D .

  162. January 28, 2008

Sorry AJ, I am an only child. Great show guys; way to keep it real!!!!

  167. January 28, 2008

    Jaybird

QOTD: I do have an older sister and like Gary she is very family orintated and one of the most thoughtful people I know. i am very thankful for the relationship we have.

  168. January 28, 2008

    Dillon Bowman

Loved the episode today, definitely my new favorite! It was a really nice surprise to have Aj come on for his birthday because today is my birthday too. It’ll be a while before I get the chance to try wines though, I’m only 15. :(

QOTD: Yeah, I have two older brothers that are totally radool. My mom was my dad’s second wife, so my brothers are from before the divorce. I lov emy family though because we’re all really close and my dad’s first wife is like my aunt/second mom. MY brothers are 30 and 36 years old, so though I don’t see them as often as most siblings, we get together for dinner once a month minimum. Having brothers is awesome because it extends the family, my one brother brings my sister-in-law and my 3 nieces over for the dinners and it’s always a great time. I can’t wait for my other brother to find a wife and continue to expand the family!

Great episode GV, you should bring your family one more often! Sasha + AJ + (Sister) + you would be awesome. I’d love to see how you all reacted to different wines.

  169. January 28, 2008

    NathanN

This was COOL! Happy birthday AJ!

QOTD: I hope my two younger brothers think of me the same way.

  170. January 28, 2008

    Chris Braun

What a nice show! Happy Birthday, AJ!

QOTD: Nope, I’m the oldest of two. And we’re too close in age for me to have introduced my brother to wine, but I think I was occasionally useful in some other ways :-) .

  171. January 28, 2008

    obrianksu

    Happy B-Day AJ, great show!

QOTD: I am the youngest of two sisters and one brother, don’t ever see them anymore, but when we where growing up they were great.

    BillyD

I’ve been lurking on and off, but I’ll come out today with another 1987 baby and CKC!

QOTD: Nope, Oldest, and not nearly as cool as Gary V, or AJ

  173. January 28, 2008

    wtvLurker

elliot is only quasi-correct, and may wanna do a little homework himself ;^) bonny doon created big house wines but sold them off in 2006. the slammer in todays episode was a bonny-doon-made 2005.

my many older brothers and sister are the greatest.

  174. January 28, 2008

    Luke P.

QOTD: I have an older sister. She’s the greatest. Best Thunder Show… Ever.

I feel this swell of Mother’s pride upon seeing the two of you. How blessed Mrs. Vaynerchuk is. Makes me want to pinch your cheeks. Happy Birthday AJ. Take your time and find your own way.

  176. January 28, 2008

    Drewine

    Happy Birthday AJ!

Given your access, it is shocking to me that you have had so little experience with wine but appreciate your honest approach to this episode. I’m sure you will learn to love and appreciate wine over time but are obviously not in any hurry to “force” the issue which I think is admirable.

  177. January 28, 2008

    cgatesman

    Great episode! Happy B-Day, AJ!

    Hey, guys…check out http://picurls.com/

    Happy B-Day AJ!

Qotd: I’m the oldest, and smartest, and best-looking, and most successful, and… well you get the picture (The first-born always thinks that). You did a fine job young man. Enjoy your day!

  179. January 28, 2008

    DirtWineKen

My favorite show thus far! Gave me warm feelings for my 9-year-younger sister (that’s a first) and for my own introduction into the wine world. I had to do it pretty much on my own; sort of like the rat in a maze. Having a knowledeable older bro would have been a BIG help.

    AJ, you rock!

  180. January 28, 2008

    EricB

Gari Wan Kenobi – strong in the force this one is. But he still has much to learn.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AJ!!! I’m surprised that growing up in the Vaynerchuk family that
you didn’t get to sample allot of wines. I let my kids have an occasional small sip of wine, it’s funny listening to their comments because they are always in the form of a Gary Vaynerchuk parody.
QOTD: I have an older brother and sister who are both into wines.

  182. January 28, 2008

    David Dadekian

QOTD: I am the older brother, so I hope I do all right. I’m still shopping just the right 2004 for my little brother’s first daughter who was born that year.

Great episode! I actually laughed out loud a couple of times thinking of my own little brother. Thanks and Happy Birthday AJ!

  183. January 28, 2008

    J-Pipes

    Happy Birthday, AJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!
QOTD: I’m the oldest. You are such a lucky couple of siblings!

  184. January 28, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: I’m an only child, but I’ve had several friends with great families. There’s nothing more fun than having a big nurturing family.
Happy Birthday A.J.! I really enjoyed “meeting” you.
We had a similar experience with an Opus. It was still fun.

  185. January 28, 2008

Happy bday AJ, have fun tonight!

Great show Gary! Got me thinking about selecting a wine or two to save for my youngest brother who’ll turn 21 in…2013.

  188. January 29, 2008

    Andrew H.

Happy B-Day AJ! That was cool seeing your reactions to the wine. I just turned 21 no to long ago and had the same experience’s with tasting wine. It’s amazing how much my palate has evolved already.
QOTD: I am the youngest and have two older brothers. They are both very different and I Love them both very much. It’s amazing to think that they are both getting married this summer and I will be the best man in one of them.

Enjoy your B-day and take care!

    Hey GV,

    Happy Birthday AJ!

QOTD: I am the oldest, just turned 21. I could never be as awesome as GV, but my brother who will be 21 in 2011, is already watching the show. So I think I am bringing him up the right way, prepared to enter the wine world in 2011. Keep the show going!!!

    -JC

  190. January 29, 2008

    David James

    Happy Birthday!

Though you should have saved the bottle till later so you could have drunk it with the rest of the family, instead of spitting it out. Oh well.

QOTD: I have two older sisters who are brilliant

  191. January 29, 2008

    ryptide

I’m the oldest of two, but my younger brother is at LEAST as awesome as GV. :)

Really cool episode, good for you guys! I am glad that you shared that with us.
Welcome to the wine world AJ (no wine till 21? yeah, right!). But anyway, congrats from Rio, Brazil.

… on the other hand, yu’ve to listen do some George Clinton. It kicks some 3000’s butt.

    QOTD: 3 younger siblings.

  193. January 29, 2008

    DavidB

qotd: Youngest of four kids and my older brothers are both very cool, but in very different ways. I love them both a boat load. But if you had asked me that question when I was 21, or perhaps younger, I would have stated they both sucked, being the youngest and often beat upon brother:) Sometimes it takes a while to appreciate what you have. Happy-day!

  194. January 29, 2008

    Mike S,

Really cool to see the Vaynerchuk bros interact.

    Nice. Happy b-day AJ.
QOTD – I am the older bro!

Gary, keep the 120’s coming. WLTV has it beat, but I’m waiting to see what else is in store.

  197. January 29, 2008

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

Happy Birthday AJ. 21 was a great year for me (4 years ago)…..so live yours up!

QOTD: I am actually the oldest of my siblings, and I’m willing to admit that I’m probably not as cool as Gary, but hey, what I offer up is definitely unique to my younger sisters and brother.

Hope to see you on the Thunder Show more!

Gary, very cool show!!! You and your brother have cheered me up
some.. My father passed away this morning, so I’ve been dealing
with all that this morning and evening. I came home and started

Qotd- Second son, great older brother only 18 monts seperated us. Took my youngest daughter out for her 21st. I thought champagne would be the thing. Ordered Veuve Clicot Yellow label (at a resturant it is some serious change) and could tell right away she was not enjoying it. So I ordered a glass of orange juice and introduced her to mimosas! She loved that!

Moral of the story give them GV or reisling for a first glass of wine! Great show and nice to meet your brother. He seems a smart dude with no pretense. I like him.

  204. January 29, 2008

    KennyMac

Love the show. Great family interaction, and very interesting to watch a person experience wine for the first time.

QOTD. As the oldest of 8 boys, I have no older siblings, but all my younger ones are pretty cool and great guys to be around.

    bundydb

That was one of the best shows I’ve seen! Great job AJ. Need to have AJ on more as a sit in for all us Noobs!

QOTD: Yeah, I have an older brother and sister. Sister was kind of distant since there were 5 of us and she is the oldest. She was off in college when I was in middle school. My older brother is just 4 years older than me so he was around a good bit getting us into all kinds of trouble! We definitely had some good times. I took my younger sister and brother under my wing in high school. The 3 of s are seperated by 2 years each. Hung out with the same crowds and ended up at the same parties. I was the oldest so they always got to hang out with my “older” group of friends and it always made them feel special. Of course, I was always having to keep them out of trouble (esp my little brother) since I didn’t drink till I was 22. But we all had a great time growing up together and talk at least once a week, even though we’ve all moved away from each other and usually only get to see each other on holidays.

    Happy Birthday AJ!!!!

    Awesome show, great job.

QOTD, No, I am the oldest of 3 sisters…

    Daniel Abrams

Hey. I’m Daniel Abrams. Been a huge fan since the beginning of this year (yeah, it ain’t long). I’m underage by a bit, but that don’t stop me enjoying wine. My parents love wine and serve me all the time. We drink tons of amazing stuff. Opus, Mersault, ect. I’d love a reply. I haven’t replied before this because.. I’m a lurker. But anyway, i was very sad when i heard you were done with shows. I know your back on (tentatively) and want to encourage you. I really appreciate the show and am bumming I am too young to visit you at the Boston Wine expo. I live very, very close. Please hit me up with an reply.

As I mentioned earlier today. I just stumbled across your wine show today for the first time. Real Fun Stuff. This episode was interesting being that I have children getting up there in age. My daughter is 17 and my son is 13. I am just a big ole wine geek so I to have saved some great vintage wines for there 21st birthday. To Start some great Champagne 85 Salon for both of them. Hopefully it will hold up well a few more years. 1990 Spottswoode Cab. for my daughter born in 90 and some 94 Silver Oak Napa for my son. Cant wait to enjoy those wines with them. Oh and yes they have tasted wines already. Alittle sip dont hurt noone. As for me! Turning 40 this year. So I wanna open some 86 Lafite Rothchild that I have been saving for awhile. Heck that was the year I graduated from High School. Cheers!!

  210. January 29, 2008

    Isaac

I am new to the wine tasting scene and this show reminds me of myself. Excellent show for new commers. Keep up the good work.

  211. January 29, 2008

    Mason

Happy 21, A.J.! Man, it is great to see you two interact with one another. You guys are great. Gary, you don’t need me to tell you this, but you have a radool family!

QOTD: I have no brothers or sisters. Only child, man.

  212. January 29, 2008

    Yoni Rabkin

A memorable episode. Quite heart warming.

QOTD: My older sister rocks. Especially since she managed to tolerate me through my annoying teen years.

  213. January 29, 2008

    Withnail

Why is the drinking age 21? Wasn’t it 18 in many states in the ’80s? When are they going to change it back?

  214. January 29, 2008

    Jon

QOTD: Yes, I have an older sibling, and NO, definitely not cooler than Gary.

  215. January 29, 2008

    jason

way to go, inducting the young man into claret. GARY, you gotta talk more about the opus tomorrow! today was about your bro as it should be, BUT, we need to know about the opus. 87 was a good year for CALI CABS? ebob gave the vintage 90E.

    QOTD: no siblings

  216. January 29, 2008

    Tstank

Happy birthday AJ. I also had a 21 year old wine when I was 21. Very good Chateau Duhart Milon Rothschild. It almost ruined me to wine because I didn’t roll Gran Cru as a CKC. But I love wine now. QOTD: I am the middle child and my older brother is the bomb and my younger brother is finally starting to come around

  217. January 29, 2008

    Syrahhhhhhhhh

AJ, I liked the way you carried yourself on the show. A lot of humility and some humor. A lot of honesty and an open mind. Nice job. Way to go.

QOTD: I am the oldest, so I am the cool one. ;)

  218. January 29, 2008

    Brandon T.

QOTD: My brother is 10 years older than me and he got me a hooker on my 18th birthday and when I was 21 he made me drink screwdrivers till I blacked out and woke up with vomit all over myself. So, you tell me!

  219. January 29, 2008

    IPv6Freely

Great show, probably one of my favorites, mostly because AJ is in a similar situation that I’m in. Gary recommended a few wines when I asked, one was a spanish red, and the other was an australian shiraz. I’m definitely going to order a bottle of the white that was on this show.

QOTD: My older sister, while kinda kooky, is who introduced me to music, and it changed my life. Family is so important, and after a few years of my dad and myself at odds, we buried the hatchet over Christmas this year. I am glad we did, as he had a double bypass surgery last week, and I could never live with myself if we had not been on good terms during that.

  220. January 29, 2008

    Surekat

Happy Birthday, AJ! loved-loved-loved the vibe on this show. i wish someone had done that for me on my 18th b-day!

QOTD: i have 2 younger bros (2 and 8 years my juniors) whom i can’t think of as “smaller than me” because they are both 1) a head taller and 2) way cooler than me! i have a lot to learn from them.

  221. January 29, 2008

    Pardus

I am traveling to Austria in a few weeks. I will look around for the Gruner Veltliner.

QOTD: I am the oldest sibling.

Where did the video comments go??!! Were we too funny for you, Gary?

I have an older brother – three years older, to be exact. He is an amazing father, husband, brother and friend. I love the guy dearly, and count myself as very lucky to have such a great older brother. He also has an awesome apartment on the Upper West Side, so I travel to NYC at least four times a year to hang with him.

    Happy 21st, AJ.

Great show Gary & AJ! Happy Birthday from Germany! Now its time for a “Lizzy likes” show… What do you think? ;)

QODT: I’m the older brother as well!

  224. January 29, 2008

WOW! My hats of to your parents for creating such a “reeedunkulously” great older brother like GV, and a “cute as poo” little bro and the relationship between. My wife gets credit for the “cute as poo” adjective.

What a fantastic episode! Congratulations, and Happy Birthday, AJ! Here’s wishing you many, many happy and healthy years to develop that palate.

    AJ
Way to keep an open mind…and work through it and not get too frustrated, I know I did when starting and I know I am ever increasing my education of wine…just a beginner in a huge world of wine.

QOTD: My older brother(by 7 yrs) is the best…he introduced me to beer, wine, and many new things…I could never thank him enough for being the man he is.

  231. January 29, 2008

    Greite

Happy Birthday AJ. Great show guys. It was interesting to have someone on really trying wine for the first time. Good job for your first real tasting.

QOTD: Yes, I have siblings. I am the youngest of 7, and as such, I enjoyed seeing the interaction between you two. Whata great way to make for a memorable 21st birthday.

  235. January 29, 2008

    Todd Smith

Happy Birthday AJ! You did a great job. And very well spoken for your age.

One of the best shows yet. It’s great to see a newbie’s reaction to wine.

QOTD – I have two younger brothers; Greg will be 31 next month and Justin will be 21 in May. I wish we were as close as you guys are.

  236. January 29, 2008

    Kathleen Lisson

Happy b-day, AJ! Great job sticking to your guns about what you smelled in the wines. I am an oldest child, so I looked up to my dad. He has only gotten cooler as I get older.
Gary, great example of the reason why wine educators recommend serving wines white before red – after the red wines, the whites taste sweeter!
    Great episode.

Loved the show. Awwwwwwwwwww to the brotherly love.

QOTD: I have 3 older (like so old I don´t know how much older they are than I am) brothers who are cool, but not GV cool. I also have a younger sister who I´ve been trying to get into wine, so that makes me the cool one of the bunch.

    Happy b-day AJ!

Happy Birthday AJ. I wish I had the same guidance when I was 21. Get Gary to give you one of these as a present: http://www.mensup.fr/usbwine/?act=insc&mp=USBWINE&o=97&p=61. Beats walking to the shop…….my French isn’t that good, but you can get the drift….

Hope to catch the show soon. Next trip to bro-in-laws or parents house I will.

But happy birthday AJ. NIce bottle to save there :) Was hoping to see your tasting notes on that one, but will wait for the high speed access to see.

QOTD. One sister, younger then me by 3 years. Always trying to get her more into wine. My evil plan will be to eventually have stuff shipped to her house in NC(land where we let people order wine) and when I visit, I pick it up!!!!

QOTD: Yes Yes I have a brother who is also 11 years older than me and I love him to death!! We don’t get to see each other as often as we’d like but we love each other for who we are!!!

    GV great show really enjoyed.

QOTD: I have 3 sisters, 1 brother. Being the eldest, and consumer of mass amounts of wine over my life, I have provided guidance and influence on the subject of wine to all.

what did you guys do with the rest of that opus? Did you go somewhere for dinner or finish with some 7-11 hot dogs? I’m dyin to know.

I have a little sister and would do anything to protect her. No olders though. That would’ve been nice. You guys are an inspiration.

QOTD- One older sister and she is pretty awesome. Would I trade her for Gary? I might need some draft picks and some cash.

  266. January 29, 2008

    Mike E in Minnesota

I almost teared up during the question of the day. I am the youngest of three and while we get together great now that we are all in our 40s, we fought like cats and dogs while growing up. I think we were too close in age to really get along when we were younger.

    Congrats, AJ.

  267. January 29, 2008

    Carlitos

    Hey guys!

That was nice to see the great relationship you have. Plus I’ve always like AJ since he wore a Real Madrid jersey on one episode.

  268. January 29, 2008

QOTD: No. I AM the awesome older sibling.

But point taken. I have 3 kids (a girl and 2 boys) and try to impart on them how important it is for them to have each other. They bicker and fight, but at the end of the day they know that they are there for each other.

    Good show.

AJ! I work 10 minutes from BU. I am taking you out for a drink buddy!

    Gary,
with respect, I think for someone approaching wine for the first time it would have been better:
    - to drink white wine how you are supposed to, i.e., chilled
    - to try a wine widely available in the market (not a Gruner), you know, starting from the basics. I think as a clean and crisp white, also a NZ sauvignon blanc would have worked.

Also, wouldn’t it have been better for AJ to keep that Opus One for a special occasion when he’ll appreciate more wine?

These are just my stupid thoughts, but obviously also your way of doing things makes sense.
    Happy Birthday to AJ!
And you, GV, I’m glad you’re not leaving the thundershow (otherwise, as I already said, I would have drowned in the swamp of sadness!)

QOTD: I have two older sisters, and they’re good sisters.

  274. January 29, 2008

    AVP

Happy Birthday AJ! I’m surprised (and relieved) to hear your older bro hasn’t trained your palate according to his methods ;) even though it worked for him..

With wine, half the experience is always the company – family and friends upgrade it always.

    QOTD: None..

It was nice seeing two bros getting along so nicely. A heartwarming relationship.

Great show, I really enjoyed watching the interaction between the two of you. Your parents should be very proud of the relationship the two of you have developed and the respect you both have for your family.

  278. January 29, 2008

    Gus

    Best. WLTV. Ever.
Why? A number of reasons. I’ll list them:
    1. AJ admits his ignorance. Wine is hard. There is more than a little sensitivity and effort required to get to any kind of place of competence. AJ coming on lets us really learn wine basics. It also shows Gary at his strongest..Gary, the educator.
    2. Gary, the educator. Loving a subject doesn’t necessarily make you a good teacher. Gary has often shown excellent teaching ability, but (I think many would admit) sometimes frenetic. Again, by being forced to be basic, we get a framework/beginning for learning.
    3. Gary and AJ have a heart. You can see that these two love each other. I mean, besides the learning, this ends up being compelling tv as well.

I could go on. Best show. My advice, bring AJ back periodically, you know, for “Wine School 101″.

qotd – very cool, but not this cool.

Good to see the Gobelsburger, had the 2005 at the end of last year (although only rated it an 84, possibly being harsh). Gru-V is worth getting into, seek out Willi Brundelmayer.

“Mott, Link it up” in tandem, that was worth replaying :)

QOTD – I am the awesome elder brother (just don’t say that too loudly if he’s around!). My brother Derek is 4 years younger, he’s pretty cool though.

  282. January 29, 2008

    Irv

Happy birthday to AJ! Gary it’s great to see once again your continued focus on the importance of family.
QOTD: I’m the oldest of four in my family. We are all close, and continue to support the concept of family that our parents taught us.

I have an older brother (2 years) who is good fella but would need about 12 coffees a day to be like Gary.

Loved the guest appearance from AJ. Happy 21st. Good to have an enthusiastic wine guide like Gary on your team.

Gary, i think you should stick this over in the “new to wine” section.
It’s good to watch someone new to wine not pick up on things you seem to find so easy.

Happy 21st AJ! When I was 21, I was drinking Sutter Home White Zin….you are lucky that your family is in the business! Now that I’m much older and wiser….I prefer a lovely Pinot Noir or a good bordeaux with a rack of lamb. Wait till GV tells you what cheese goes best with the wine. Cheers!

    AJ!!!!!!!I wish I was 21 again!
    Happy Birthday!!
I LOVED watching you both..was fun…not just to watch the dynamic between you both, but it is fun to experience wine with someone for the first time!
    QOTD: Yes…older brother..he’s usually awesome.

Fun episode! I find it hard to believe that today was your college student brother’s first sip of alcohol.

AJ is a cutie. Great to have him on the show.
My daughter also just turned 21 (less than a week ago). She, too, is a CKC, but she landed in Africa for a study abroad semester on the day of her birthday, so she won’t be trying too many wines for a while. Ah well. I’ll treat her to something yummy when she returns home.
Happy (belated) birthday to AJ and my beautiful deeter!

That was an awesome episode! HAPPY BIRTHDAY AJ!!! That’s incredible that Gary saved a bottle of Opus One for you for all those years. I’m going to cellar some wines for my niece so she can have a similar experience when she is old enough to drink wine legally.

QOTD: No, I have a younger sister. I am the awesome older sibling. :-D

QOTD: I am the older sibling, so I’ve got to say I can’t answer that.

That was a fun show. It was really great to see AJ not sure about what he was tasting. It’s easy to forget that that’s what everyone is like when they are first introduced to wine.

  304. January 29, 2008

CLASSIC!!!! QOD.. No, I am the oldest brother in a family of 8, but all my siblings get together once a week. We have a close knit family, not very common nowadays. My 2 kids, Veronica,15 and A.J.,14 are already pretty good at tasting wine and knowing the “right” food pairings. We all watch your show on occasion and they love it. Keep up the great work!! Al

    Gary,
tonite you reminded me of my own older brother in his best moments: loving, inspiring, motivating, educating, role-modeling, persuading, admiring, bonding, glowing, drink-ing and tast-ing. Thanks for the memories bro.

AJ: life only gets better from here on, buddy.

My first bottle of wine was a fifth rate Pinot Grigio! It basically scared me away from white wines thereafter. I still have yet to recover. AJ is definitely a lucky guy! Don’t feel bad though Gary we’re all lucky to have you too!

  307. January 30, 2008

    CRZYWinemaker

Gv, that was one for the books, my little brother is also AJ, although I never had the chance to be part of his first wine experience. What put this whole experience into perspective is that your bro was born when I graduated from highschool, Wow, do I feel old or what ?? I hope that all the new viewers of WLTV get a chance to see this EP and realize that wine is an education and if you stick with it just a little bit,it will pay back dividends on the sniffy/sniff and the taste factor for sure.
QOTD: Got 2 older sisters, love ‘em to death, but I’m alone in the love of the wine world.

I am the youngest of 9, 7 surviving, with over 7 years between myself and the next sibling. Thanks to my sister who is 16 years older, I had my first “WOW” moment with “good” wine. (Her pockets were deeper than mine and still are!)

After my parents went to Europe to visit my only brother, who was stationed in the Navy in Germany, they brought back the tradition of wine with meals. In our case, only special occasions, not daily. So, a shout out to my big brother, 20 years older than myself, who is turned on to WLTV. Guess a young dog can teach an old one a few tricks.

Happy belated birthday, AJ. Unlimited ceiling, rocketman!

QOTD: naw, my older bro has a handle-bar mustache and drinks zima!! Scary, right!?? Okay, Happy B’day AJ–next time around, don’t forget to thank momma Vaynerchuck, since she’s the one who brung ya into da whirl!!

In my country, the legal drinking age is 7. In the same law, it is stated that drinking is not an option, but a duty. One must ingest equivalent to 21 grams of alcohol a day – or one will be deported to our sister-country Norway – home of the mountain-goats, and fishing-monkeys. A bold world indeed!
I have no brother! (I have, but he has been deported, and so, by law, does no longer exist).

Cool episode … love the brother dynamics! Yeah, I’ve got three older and one younger brother (and two older and one younger sister) … so I can relate! They are all pretty awesome in their own way … but also a handful at times.

Love the price tag at the bottom of AJ’s glass!

Coolness! I really enjoyed the show and a belated Happy Birthday to AJ. He was awesome on the show and seeing his “guinea pig” experience with wine was priceless.

QOTD: Actually, I have a sister who is 12 years older than me and she rocks. I’m 47 and she still calls me little brother. Trust me AJ, it never changes, but it’s all good.

Awesome show. AJ’s reaction to wine was pretty much my first reaction too. Good to see that.

QOTD: No older sibs, I was the oldest, but watching this episode reminded me of how my family worked, I watched over my little bro and he always looked up to me and that bond is unlike any other in mankind.

    Happy Birthday AJ!

Happy Birthday AJ, What an awesome show. I’m touched at how open your family is with their affection towards each other, so nice to see. It’s also refreshing to see a family who likes each other. You are so lucky to have each other.

QOTD: I have a sister who is 3 years older than me, we are totally different but she is my very best girlfriend, and she is awesome. I also have 3 younger brothers who are 9/12, 13, and 16 years younger than me. They are also really awesome and we enjoy a lot of time together. It’s amazing how the older you get the less that big age gap seems to be. I love spending time with all my siblings :)

Great show! Happy Birthday to your bro. A great look at the first steps into wine.

My 21-run was a little different. There was definitely some heat…but that was more from the Prairie Fires!

great idea for a show. Happy belated 21st to AJ.

A.J., don’t be intimidated with the descriptors that Gary throws out. It is something that is learned over time. He would absolutely be the first one to say have fun with wine, experiment and think as you drink. I don’t mean “think” like “be reponsible” (but do that some too) but think about what is in the glass. The color, the flavors of the aromas and tastes (fruit, herbal, vegetal, meaty, wood and mineral components), the level of intensity. Enjoy the ride.

  337. February 2, 2008

    Big Nick

Great episode Gary. Must say that I like the family idea. Too bad my little bro is so worried about himself and not being like his big brother that he has missed out on some great opportunities. Happy late birthday AJ.

Great ep. I have a feeling that AJV is the only American whose first wine was a Gruner Veltliner, something most people have never heard of (I’ll have the Chardonnay please!).

Regrettably, I’m the only youth in the house.

  341. February 9, 2008

    Laura

GARY: I know you’re always complaining about lurkers, and I’m sure you’ve heard my excuse before (I watch on iTunes many days later [I sort of binge] and thus am always off-time), but I just needed to let you know that I literally e-mailed this ep to my mother and said “get me those first two for July 8th” (my 21st). I’m torn between seeking out sugar cane and all those things and seeing what they smell like beforehand. Maybe I’ll just get with the whole “training your palate” program beforehand.

QOTD: I’m the elder, and AJ, I sort of want to set you up with my sister, who is 18.

  342. February 10, 2008

    Dan-o

Nice job AJ and hapy B-day.
Intersting that GV picked out a wine with your birth year for just this occasion.
I have done this for my kids and I have 1990 Chave Hermitage, 1991 Beringer Private Reserve, 1995 Insignia or Lynch-Bages, and 1998 Mouton Rothschilde.

QOTD – My older sister Lucy is my rockin’ sib. She is an attorney in NYC with an IQ off the charts. She likes to taste wine and share experiences with family!

This is coming about 5 months late, but I just saw this episode and wanted to tell AJ “it’s all good” because I don’t taste all those different flavors in the wines either and I’ve had way more than 4 wimpy glasses of it! :) No hard feelings! Though I’m sure by now you’ve had plenty of wine-experience, AJ. I guess we need to go lick some rocks and eat some dirt before we’ll be tasting like your big bro. Oh well! Keep trying!

lol gary this episode is great. i just turned 21 august 15th and im new to wine so i really dont pick up on the flavors tooo much. . so i can totally feel for AJV. untrained palates. . but im sure NOW hes better at it. . as i will soon be hopefully. . but the other day i had a kendall jackson Cab i think it was and i got a bit of a fruit from it and the more it opened up in my glass i kinda picked up on a chocolate flavor smell kinda thing from it. . it was interesting

Dare I say classic episode? How fun to watch AJ get nothing on the wines. Im damn sure ( even sometimes today ) the first wine you would have shoved under my snoot I would have said “alcohol” as well. Im happy to see he had a good experience overall and I hope hes trying new wines to this day. Happy 21st, AJ! QOTD: Only child, which is a good thing if you know me.

Keep tasting AJ, you will soon be hooked

Gary – I was getting caught up on some of the back episodes and ran into this one. Your brother AJ is awesome!!! You should have him on the show again.

QOTD: I have 2 older sisters, one lives in Maine and the other in San Diego and they are both awesome. My sister in Maine, her husband’s job title is “Chief Lobster Biologist”, how AWESOME is that?!?!
