QOTD: Would LOVE to visit Switzerland for a month or two. I have a friend who is Swiss. I have another who goes to Europe every summer and always says Switzerland is his favorite European Country. :)

Gary, did I hear an S-bomb fly? (AJ, Google that s#&%!) With a very lovely guest no-less? Is your brother a bad influence?

QOTD: Nice people, culture, geography and wine apparently. I never thought of Switzerland as a wine country until now.

P.S. – to convert C to F, take the C temp, multiply it by 1.8 and add 32!

QOTD: I know that it’s named after the canton of Schwyz and I knew what the four languages were before you mentioned them. And of course the Alps and Swiss banks and Zurich and all that. I’d love to visit.

    Hey GV,

What a fantastic featured-guest and winery for today’s WLTV. Like most viewers I haven’t had the opportunity to sample any wines from Switzerland yet, though they certainly appear intriguing.

QOTD – The concept of “terroir” is the primary reason I’d enjoy sampling wines from Switzerland. We’ve all seen the beautiful images of the countryside there and it would be nice to pair some of the visuals with suitable wine-impressions from the same region. It’s always interesting to compare the profile of “local” (Northwest) varietals with their counterparts from around he world. I’d like to see how the Pinot Gris you sampled compares to many I’ve tried from Oregon!

    Great Show, Gary!

Very interesting region. I have not tried any wines from Switzerland, but I am intrigued, though they seem tough QPR’s.

QOTD: I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’d really like to know more about the terroir and how it translates to the bottle! I’d love to come to Switzerland again anyway – Last two times I was there were for the Montreux Jazz festival. Some of the best days of my life!

    Another great show, Gary.

QOTD: I’ve been to Switzerland many times; I worked for a company headquartered in Basel and had to go there for meetings regularly. They were always wonderful hosts and, on off hours, took me all over the country by car or by rail. Memories: I remember shopkeepers sweeping the the street in front of their stores when they opened, I remember someone yodeling as they walked to work in the morning, I remember storybook towns like Grindelwalt that were out of a picture book, I remember a revolving restaurant on top of a mountain in the Alps eating cold meats and cheese and drinking wine with an old friend (007 bar). I remember many other things. I’ve been to other countries but I always loved Switzerland.

Love to go to ski, meet some mountain goats and drink wine from the unknown bad boys of Europe. Loved seeing a wine maker/family guest on the show and love that Gary is willing to criticise the wines regardless.

I’d visit Switz. b/c all of my Swiss friends are badass, intelligent, multilingual people who rock. I love their wine and chocolate.

Must be some strange air around Kitchener that DC would be pretty much alone in not appreciating your lovely guest, Sophia (Sofia?). OTOH, she’d probably think my disdain of dark chocolate was pretty weird, too. Also, pretty radool to be able to out-spit Gary. I prefer the aerated whirl, too – the closed mouth approach I find tends to accentuate the heat/alcohol to the detriment of the balance of the wine. IIRC, JPiper would agree.

Chasselas is produced by at least a couple of wineries in the Okanagan, I believe, as is zweigelt. Probably inspired by Swiss ex-pats near or at the top of the vinification chain.

QOTD When we lived a couple of years in Europe, we found Switzerland to be our favourite destination. Always said if we were ever kicked out of Canada, we’d head for Zurich. Superior service was the byword, sensible and comfortable amenities abound. Endless hot water in those great big bathtubs made for soaking and/or visiting… Rare in Europe back in the day.

Didn’t drink a lot of wine there, as we were budget travelers, barely past CKC-dom. And the dry hotels were bargains, including the usual Swiss service.

Nice dude. hilarious I was watching thinking geez man give her the bucket first and you pass it over and give us all a wink.

QOTD: Have a good friend there, I know it has a high standard of living, beautiful countryside. I’d drink the wine if it showed up in my local shop (here in canada, eh?!), and would be happy to visit if the CDN dollar was stronger!

Qotd: I forgot what it was. My wife and I were playing with our daughter.

Good episode, and very cool to be exposed to different cultures!

Gary – again thanks for continuing the show – it’s awesome!

    Great and informative episode!!!!!!
QOTD: I don’t know much about Switzerland except that I always enjoy anything I eat that has been imported from there, and now I am definitely interested in trying some wines from the region as well!

Any insight into Sophia’s tasting method? Seemed to purse her lips and allow some air into her mouth while tasting … Tried it with my Malbec and got way more aromatics (esp. alcohol) than with a closed-mouth whirl. What say you, GV?

Sorry to be such a scalawag, Gary, but there’s another comely wench gracing your decks, matey! Aaarrrrrgggghhhh! Aaarrrggghhhh! (Two Arghs=good mojo)

Sophia and Gary, great show today, I have never thought of looking at switzerland for wine, just chocolate. I will have to seek one or two out.
QOTD- I know very little about Switzerland other than the chocolate kicks butt over anything we have in the states, the watches are the best in the world, and the pocket knives are very handy. From the little I know about the country it sounds like a great place and I would very much like to see it someday. Thanks for a great show today!

QOTD: I’d love to visit Switzerland and try the wines your family makes. I was there at the age of twelve and loved the jams. I’ll bet the wine is fantastic!!
Gary, the show was great and so was Sophia. How about signing off in Russian.

P.S. I don’t think you should score wines when you are tasting/taping next to the proprietor. The descriptions are enough.

    Great guest!
(What was she fiddling with on her dress (on her left side, underneath
her heart)? I think she did it 5 times. No big deal, just curious.)
QOTD: St. Barnard’s with rum barrels on their necks looking for lost skiers.

QOTD: i would love it if I could order these wines online! I’ve never had Swiss wine and am hoping to make a visit soon.

Great job Sophia! I would love to visit Switzerland some day – my ancestors came from that country and it looks like a beautiful place to live.
