How bout another show where you do wines that everybody can get everywhere. I want to hear your opinion on stuff that we folks out in the sticks can get our hands. To make things more interesting you could do it marathon-style. OR include it with a 1985 petrus or something?

Thank God the Freemark Abbey Cab didn’t REALLY score. I think we should boycott them for this simple reason: they were the first California winery, to my knowledge, to start charging for tasting and therefore opening the floodgates for the stupidity that is going on now :)

Okay. I’ll delurk to satisfy your desire for a comment, so pay attention:

No joke, it took me about ten or fifteen episodes to figure out you were saying ‘Mott’, not ‘Ma’. Like your mother was on the other side of the camera shooting the show. Must be an East Coast/West Coast thing that was lost in translation.

    Great show. Keep it up.

gv—— i could not agree with you more in regards to the mushroom cloud of uber concentrate in a can flavors from many of the aussie wines. perhaps the grapes lack deapth or finesse @ harvest. or, are allowed to over ripen soooooooooooo long, that the only solution to fix it is to produce the over the top nuke in a bottle. which is crap. jett

Top 400! lol I don’t know why people think that’s interesting
QOTD: A little-known fact is that Coach Belichick will have a game plan for *every quarter* of the SB, and the team just has to execute. Like GV, I think the Pats will jump to an early lead. The defense will relax a bit.. the Giants will gain ground. In the 4th quarter there will be some anxious moments (I mean, for Pats fans, LIKE ME), but the Pats always find a way to win. So I’m taking the Pats by 31- 24, something like that. Sorry if that’s a bit long-winded there. I see wristbands.

I don’t remember ever being so underwhelmed with a Superbowl game as I am for this one. Of course, this is coming from a Broncos fan so I have my own problems. I just don’t care. Gary, I’m sure you concur.

OK, with all the being said, I guess I am kinda sorta rooting for the Giants. It would be so sweet to knock the Pats and Brady off their pedestal.

Great show, but I like the option of skipping over some of your tangents (i.e., see Hermitage review).
I’d like you to review Harlan & Columbia Crest Walter Clore Private Reserve, the ‘02 blend of the latter was fantastic.

I think everyone WANTS the Giants to do well so it isn’t a blowout of a game, but we all know that they are going to get worked. I am picking the Patriots, even though all of the pressure is on them, they are still an outstanding team.

Good show Gary. It’s fun to splurge and treat yourself once in awhile. Thanks also for the Mott shirts!

    PASO WINO

    Great episode Gary!!

Glad to see McPrice Myers wine on the show. I’ve been lucky enough to try all of his wines and they are all outstanding. He is doing an awesome job and the wines really show.

My next mission is an Hermitage. Yeah that’s a lot of coin, but I am very exicted and the next time I treat myself that will be the wine.

    QOTD: Patriots no doubt

  71. January 31, 2008

    Michael Bedford

    Yeah, I’m a lurker… So shoot me…

I love the show! Majorly glad to hear that you’re not ending it… I’ve listened to a LOT of wine podcasts, and I have to say that yours is the by far the most entertaining, and I’ll also say the most inspirational. Your passion for this crazy fermented juice we all drink is amazing and contagious. I wish I had what your were drinking in front if me while I watch everyday. (I live in PA, so I can’t even take advantage of your special shipments… Thanksgiving… Christmas…)

Jett mentioned the overripe wines, and I agree. It’s a lot like Starbucks coffee. Over-roasting to get a “strong” coffee is really just BURNED coffee. It’s missing the point. Good coffee has flavors and subtlety like good wine. Can be strong or it can be elegant. Coffee from over-roasted beans is like wine from over-ripe grapes. All punch and little subtlety. You either love it, or you hate it.

Question for G.V. – How do you do that slurpy aeration thing when you taste without spitting wine all over yourself?

QOTD – My call it that it is probably going to be a HELL of a game. The Pats will probably win, but I always vote for the underdog.

So, this is why lurkers lurk. We ramble on an on once you get us started…

QotD: I’m not a sports fan at all. Most sports-related questions will go completely over my head in any discussion. The most I’ll watch is a boxing match or MMA bout whenever it occurs to me to watch.

I get the gut feeling that many people want the Giants to do well against the Patriots. I also get the hunch that the New England Patriots have been quite indomitable this season, so my prediction is the Patriots by a slight lead. I just don’t think the Giants will go down easily this year. :shrugs:

  74. January 31, 2008

    Pat Roy

    Lurker solution!

Alright, here’s the thing. Of course you know why there are so many lurkers around right? Well I’ll tell you why I am one of that kind. I watch the show through iTunes and whenever you call out lurkers to leave comments, well I’m just too lazy. Open a browser, type in winelibrary.tv, click on the show, put in my name, email… Really?

The solution: Create an os x widget so I can with a flick of the mouse enter a comment for the latest episode (or other ones with a select box?). So easy… I would comment on every episode.

    Cheers!

Haha, Mott gets a shirt! That’s awesome. C is clearly the best choice.

    Exciting juice today … almost makes me consider finding a “real job” so I could afford US$110 wine :~}

About the Butter Bandit: I love him, just not in wine! Croissants? YES! Sauces? YES! Shortbread? YES! Wine? Not so much, especially when he’s rolling with the Oak Monster.

QOTD: Pats win, but I’m no good at guessing scores

Admittedly, I’m a lurker, but I watch on iTunes, so to comment is an extra step away from the convenience of having the podcast in the first place, but Gary seems so down, I had to come comment!

3>2 in a snow storm, Pats.

If I may be so fortunate to recommend another MacPrice Meyers wine it would be his “Les Gallet” Syrah 2005. If you like cooler climate syrahs, look no further.
A great example of how the “scores” are just wrong sometimes. And then to add to the hype, the 2006 wines (yet to be bottled) will rock you world probably more than the 05’s. Believe it!!

QOTD: While I’d love to be ignorant like Plax and say the Giants will win in a low scoring game, it’s just not likely AT ALL! Are you kidding me, in cold(ish) weather at Giants stadium in week 17 the score was higher than that!! If I’m Brady, I’m staring down perfect weather conditions on an imaculate field in Tempe. Pats 38, Giants 24. Unless the Pats give up 2+ turnovers (Yes, San Diego blew their opportunity), it is just highly unlikely to see the flip happening. And believe me, I hope it’s the other way around.

Nonetheless, Go G-men! (And the Browns will kick ass next year!)

  84. January 31, 2008

    Kmarie

Excellent show! As for the QOTD, I live in Indiana, and so don’t really have an emotional investment in the East Coast Bowl (I was thrilled with the I-65 Bowl last year). But I’m thinking that the Pats will win… all signs point to it. But you never know what will happen. That’s why they play the game. I’d be thrilled with an upset.

Maybe the Pats will be over confidant and the Giants will play like who cares everyone thinks we’re going to loose anyway, and the Giants kick their butts. It happens. Sometimes underdogs are crazy. We can hope.

Wow. I am now officially jonesing for some Hermitage. I’ve never had it but I really like the Shiraz/Viognier blends. Wonder if I’ll ever be able to find any in this neck of the woods . . .
QOTD: Well, the Super Bowl hardly ever turns out to be a good football game, does it? I’m not a Giants fan but I would dearly love to see the Pat’s get their just desserts. Probably won’t happen though. I think it’ll be the Patriots in a rout.

Hola! Reforming lurker trying to break the habit! Great episode, indulging in some Thunder! Love it. The big swig from the Hermitage was awesome, the little ‘hang on a sec’ gesture was pretty rad too. I was digging how much you were savoring that wine. The nothern Rhone rocks for sure. big Cote Rotie fan. And Vaqueras and Rasteau in the south also. I’m now dying to try the McPrice. The T-vines Grenache from Napa is a perenial Favorite. Thanks for being GV and providing show!
Pats are going to bring the Thunder on Sunday, btw. They may actually win the Presidency this year!
Just a few recent highlights of whats been great for me lately:
    Dave Phiney’s Beau Vigne cab
Jorge and Ringlands Alto Moncoya Grenaches
‘03 and ‘04 Villacreces Ribera del Duero
    Hestan Myere Vineyard Cab
    All the Colonial Estate stuff
    All vintages of Clio!!
Larkmead, Turnbull, Darioush, Regusci, Chappellet and ‘04 Honig – all Napa cab

    …Sorry for the long list!

Would love to say Giants, being a long time fan, but realistically, I think the Pats will wine. If it’s over by halftime, won’t have to worry, will just drink more wine!!!

31-20 Patriots. Let’s not forget that the right side of the Patriots offensive line was “hurt” for the last Giants game, and the leftside starters made Umenyiora disappear. With all five starters playing against the Giants “difference makers”, well, good night Giants.

Gary – keep the show going. How else will we discover these emerging regions like Santa Barbera? If you had a trip to visit 10-15 wineries in a region like this, you could easily get 30 Vayniacs to go with you. I know that with enough lead time, I would go.

    Stay well,

GV — you absolutely ROCK! Thank you so much for tasting that wine (and for saving me $50!). My bro and I aren’t actually fans of it, though I am a HUGE petite sirah fanatic, but I really wanted to hear what the expert had to say before I shelled out that much (as you would say, half a bottle of the Hermitage worth). So thank you SO much.

BTW, went out for steak yesterday and had the Franciscan on the wine list ($48), but split it with 3 coworkers and we were all very happy with the quality of that wine even after the restaurant markup. They were impressed.

Loved your explorations today of the pricier wines. . .I get nervous shelling out for anything over 30 (actually, I get nervous over $18, but I can usually hold it in check up to about 25 or 30). Everyone’s pallate is different, but it’s nice to get some idea of what might be in store before investing in the experience of pricier wines.

Hey – that’s two days in a row with a bad pass at the end. . .hopefully it’s not a trend.

Cline Cashmere – A GSM that knocks my socks off every time I open it.

    QOTD: Giants
We have some bottles of Boshe 1997 and last year it looked like they were dead. I had read that sometimes a wine will go into hibernation so we put them aside for a year. We just opened one and the color was fresh and beautiful and it tasted like a youngish wine. So, for whatever reason, we have our Bosche back.
    the Hermitage sounds sumptuous.

GV, You really pumped me on the Hermitage tonight. Someday when I get to the point that I can justify $100+ wine on my military retirement, I want to try this. Especially as Syrah is my purple grape of choice and as I mentioned yesterday, Viognier is one of my favorite white wines.

I’d love to see an upset, but I just don’t know if it’s happening.

I agree 100% about Hermitage. I recently had the opportunity to try the 2000 Delas Tourette at a practically giveaway price, and it blew me away. That wine joined a very short list of things I have been priveledged to try that really changed the way I look at wine. I guess you could say that it changed my life, but non-winos always look at me funny when I say that. It had such fascinating notes of bell peppers and smoked meats. I, too, would drink Hermitage over Bordeaux, all things being equal.

QOTD: screw both teams! i’m an eagles fan, so i don’t even have to explain how about feel about the giants…and i think tom brady is a…i don’t wanna use this word in front of children…but this word also means cigarette.

Great show again! one of this show’s biggest strengths is suggestion of value driven wines; however, it’s definitely worthwhile to get a taste of that “gourmet sh!t” as Samuel L Jackson referred to the coffee he was drinking at Tarantino’s house in Pulp Fiction. Hermitage is definitely on my “to do” list, but that won’t come to fruition until my next promotion…hopefully in 12 months….

That was a madman episode! Great job. Do you sleep? 24-7 365 up in that dome piece must be one heck of a ride; I know it would wear me OUT. I’m tired of all the lurkiness too, It’s great that you’re sticking around. I used to watch that old show “Kate and Allie” hardcore when I was like 5…they became like my mothers. The feeling I had when they went off the air…it was just like “what now?” Don’t put me through that again. Thanks for the super pumped show!!!

Pats up 28-3 at the half, with at least one defensive TD, win by a 42-17 final score. Manning gets picked at least twice (maybe more), Randy Moss scores at least 2 TDs. I boldly predict that, after this game, Tom Brady will be considered a real chick magnet.

Being a Marshall University student back in the second half of the nineties with Randy Moss I have to root for him. Even in high school we knew that he would be bound for greatness if he kept his attitude in check. I think he is finally with a team that is good enough to humble him but at the same time bring out his skills. The team is just all around a great team in which he complements and is not the center of. So I say Patriots. I am not even a Patriots fan, but I must say I give them the nod here.

Kick ass episode. Mott gets a T, Giants going to the bowl, big day for the Mottster, I think he needs to sit down and give his pregame predictions tomorrow. Big wines too. Thanks Gary, once again, for setting things strait. I am tired of candied, fake, jammed up wines getting all the points these days. We need wines to eat with! I don’t eat jam with my steak!

QOTD: Patriots, 38-20. I think we see the warm-weather Tom Brady-Randy Moss show in full effect, as the Pats o-line ramp up their pass protection and Moss breaks free for two scores. V, you say you may be leaning now a bit more towards new world. I’ve been thinking that about you for some time. When you say “good color”, it’s always ‘more good’ when it’s darker. You like “good body”………well that is more akin to new world. I think you’re a closet “NewWorlder”. Common G, get out of the closet, realize your sexuality (OK, just kidding) and let people know your preferences. However, I must admit, I have changed styles from more new world veering towards old world, but I have to say “I swing both ways”, and “I feel happiest riding the fence”.

QOD-not only will I be routing for the Giants in Seattle, I really think they will win. Yea, yea, the underdog thing. I’m always for a good underdog, but I really think the Giants will win. Look at who they have stymied to get here.

QotD: I’m a Giants fan through and through so of course I’m picking the Giants. Basically Eli Manning needs to be perfect, and the Giants vaunted Defense needs to step up, unlike it did in their last meeting [can't expect to win a game when the opposing offense hangs 38 on you]. Warmer climates, better field, the defense gets to Brady and rattles him.

OK I’ll quit “lurking” and leave a comment. Always interesting and entertaining. I share your point of view on judging wine for yourself, but, man there are so many different choices out there that it helps to have some other opinions to help narrow things down a little. I share your love of Amarones but can’t afford to drink ‘em very often. In limited experience, I’ve noted great variety in the characteristics of these wines. Fell in love with Italy on my only trip there and am always interested in learning more about their wines. Question: Don’t you pour a little more than you really need to for a tasting??

Also, I’m pretty sure we had a Delas Merlot at my wedding – it was gorgeous.

Hey Gary- Great show. Do you think it was fair tasting the petite syrah after the Hermitage that you were so partial to? I think you should have tasted the Grenache and the Petite Syrah first, saving the Hermitage for last. Seems like after tasting the Hermitage your palette is going to be pretty sensitive to lesser quality wines. I am a big fan of the Hermitage region of the Rhone as well. Great stuff.
QOTD: From my heart…G-Men’s D-line gets it done. G-31 P-24 Brady gets sacked 4 times!! That would be so awesome.

Superbowl XLII: I predict that the Giants and the Patriots will take the field, toss the ball back and forth, do a lot of falling down, and someone will emerge victorious. I also predict that someone will be injured during the game. Oh, you want me to predict a winner? I think it will either be the Giants or the Patriots.

Gary, I am on a mission with you regarding the big ass glass. My mission is to convince you to one day call it The Thundermug, rather than just the big ass glass. Why? Because the show is the Thunder Show, ergo, you are using the Thundermug on the Thunder Show. Also, thundermug is just a crazy kickass word. Do you know what thundermug means? It is another word for a chamber pot. How cool is that? Plus it seems related to your enjoyment of dirty poopy smells that sometimes occur in some wines. What could be a better rationale than that? Here starts my campaign.

I don’t care about the SB at all. One reason you’ve got viewers who don’t comment here is because they watch on Itunes or some other similar service. To get them to go through the trouble of coming to this page (2 clicks IF they have wltv bookmarked, which if they are using itunes isn’t necessarily the case, or 3+ clicks if they are a day or more behind and want to comment on something that has past) you’ve found one good, though imperfect tactic; free stuff. The only other way is to have a question of the day which they immediately go “I have an answer AND it is an interesting (or unique) answer.” Without that second part it seems easier to let it slide and just go “someone else will have said what I’m going to say.” anyway, great show and how do we get a new wrist band?

GV—–(1) how do you resolve the “enormity” of the alcohol in the grenache, yet
in the same breath describe it as “subtle?”

    (2) In the mid 70s I was fortunate to taste through some of the Freemark

    Gary,
The Butter Bandit was spotted this past summer in a 2004 Rully from Pierre Yves Colin-Morey. My notes simply say, “Popcorn!” And not just popcorn, but buttered popcorn – think Buttered Popcorn flavored Jelly Bellies.

QOTD: Giants 31, Pats 27 – No love for cheaters!

    Go Steelers 2008/2009!!!!!

Love your show. I agree completely that the Syrah/white grape blends (especially from Oz) are absolutely great. Cali producers need to start moving in this direction.

As to the question: Answer is … I think the Pats win but I would love to see them lose after all the hype. I hate Bellichek and Brady. To see the smugness wiped off of their faces would be better than your $110 bottle of Hermitage.

Pats by a touchdown & a fieldgoal. As much as I want to see the Giants wreck their record. Oh, how I love to see history made!

Easily within my top five favorite EPs of all time Gary. Absolutely L O V E D this show. Your words about Hermitage and the description of the Delas nose made me verklempt and nostalgic, because for me they are the most special in the world and they have marked most of my “sublime wine” experiences over the last twenty years. Many thanks for opening some true thunder wines.

I expect the Pats to win, but hope for an exciting game.

Wow. The Hermitage sounds like it would be the kind of thing to have once in your life at least, but 100+ bones – yikes! Pats 24, Giants 14. Perfection will be achieved.

    Gar,
Great show! I am going to have to get some Delas! My prediction:
Giants upset the Pats and take revenge, 35-31. I will be getting ready to party with the Bubbles!

Great episode. Interesting to hear you talk about a changing pallet (and see it change during one episode). The mind and tongue are quite a team and what better to test it with than wine?

great episode, that hermitage is going to be my next splurge wine. and it was only a matter of time before the link it up mott shirt happened…

qotd – pats up early, g-men with an impressive midgame comeback to take the lead by halftime, moss shut down the entire second half but brady connects with welker enough for the pats to dominate the 4th quarter and take it

WOW…….I don’t think I have ever seen such a swing in mood as just happened here. The Hermitage to the last P.S. what a swing. Your face said a thousand words. I am not a huge butter bandit guy, but on occassion I can find a creamy Chard that hits the spot. Had one the other day that was buttery, but also full of pineapple. It was a nice flavor combo.

    Hey there WLTV,
OK, GV, you have done it, finally brought me out of Lurkerdom. It’s great to see the show kicking with renewed energy as it approaches 400. I watch here in Japan, although I hail from South Aussie. Speaking of which, when I worked in the industry throughout the nineties, the big cult wines of the Barossa V were the Hill of Grace and Grange. I hear nothing of these wines now, what happened do you think. I have loved wine for a long time, and used to work as a sommelier (Aussie style). Just wanted to say, Cheers mate! I have learnt so much from watching WLTV and it sates my appetite for wine talk, because let’s face it, outside of the industry it is an exy hobby! Shame really.

  475. February 4, 2008

    YoungDave

QOTD: PATS BABY!! (but I’m watching this on Sunday night and am both exremely surprised and depressed by the reality that the damn Giants somehow pulled it off at the end, and the Pats had a crappy game…the kind of game that they have one in every, say, 19 or so games…WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE THIS ONE??!! Damn it!)

  476. February 4, 2008

    Gary,
