I love Madiran wines! Thanks so much for doing a show on Southwest France. I had two bottles of the 2003 Laplace and really, really enjoyed it. It has a unique, totally focused taste – I can go with blueberries – that hangs in there for a very long time. Thanks Gary.

QOTD: Abalone that I’ve popped off the rock myself.

Those were some interesting wines. The Carm sounds especially good to me.

QOTD: Carl won’t eat shellfish of any kind…at all. I like shrimp.

QOTD – Scallops who have had a nice soak in OJ, green onion, garlic, and black pepper. Splash of olive oil, quick sear on a very hot grill. Washed down with a “razor sharp” high acid Aussie sav blanc.

LMAO! ‘Like the tough guy who cuts his toes off with the lawnmower and keeps on cutting the grass.’ Priceless, simply priceless. You know and I know that NOBODY has ever met that guy but the imagery probably explains the wine’s characteristics perfectly.

QOTD: Dungeoness crab. From steamed with drawn butter to the BEST crab in the world for crabcakes and 15 things in between.

Yes you have to trust your palate! After tasting wine for awhile and looking at the scores given by the “experts” I learned that it was more important what they wrote than the score as to wheather I would like the wine.

    QOTD: Lobster.

Wow, you have girls serenading you – if only you knew back in high school that simply starting a video wine blog could get you chicks, huh? You know, assuming the web and blogs existed when you were in HS and you could drink and all the girls had computers and high speed internet access and cell phones so they could call without tying up their parents land line phone. Yeah, that would have been great.

    Nice song, Sara! Cool.
Had some Merlot from WA this evening… the oak monster was in the hizzy but he’s gone as I swallowed him. All gone! Apart from *him* it was altogether O.K. BTW, more ‘Oak Monster’ t-shirts, please… those were the coolest, IMHO!
O.K., can’t compete with some of these awesome spread the thunder entries, but I’ll do something anyway!
QOTD: That’s pretty easy… lobster. From Maine. Lobster on a hot summer’s day swimming in butter with a little vino bianco outside. Heaven!

401 episodes, and the Madiran barrier is finally broken.

Had the ‘02 Laplace as a pop-and-pour and I didn’t find it very aggressive at all, but wonderful stuff for the price.

Perhaps the Languedoc is the place to find a viognier I actually like? Dunno, given my experiences with white Rhones …

QOD: seared big-ass scallops (caveat being that we’re 1,200 miles from any kind of ocean out here in the stix.)

    Gary,

I was about to ask you if you ever did a Madiran from SW France. I just had my first one ever 3 days ago – a 2003 Madiran Chateau Montus. At first I thought it was way to tannic but with some decanting it turned out awesome. So, thanks – very interesting episode.

    QOTD: Pan-seared scallops.

    QOTD

    Langostino

Preferably from the waters off New Zealand……they have a great mineral quality that pairs oh so well with a Good Sauv Blanc from New Zealand with their mineral and light citrus flavors.

Go GV GO!……..I am spreading the Thunder to one person at a time!

    Tommy Vernieri

Has Gary jumped the shark? It’s possible.

    QOTD: I like shrimp.
