I love the new direction we’re headed GV. I’m poor, so I’m always looking to pick up something from Portugal or Spain.

QOTD: I have yet to find any organism of the sea that I do not LOVE! King Crab has a special place in my heart, as do freshly caught peel-and-eat shrimp (none of that farm-raised crap)!

  35. February 5, 2008

    Cma82

Awesome episode gary! I think for the next 100 episodes you should try to come up with at least one wine each episode from an appellation I’ve never had.

QOTD: If it comes in a shell…i’m down with it

    QOTD:
It’s got to be Lobster. Poached, with the meat put into a ramiken and smothered in a Creamy Lobster Broth made with fresh lobster broth, a touch of celery, carrot, lemongrass, fresh ginger, tarragon, heavy cream and tomatoes. Oh yes, served with a 2004 La Croix Pouilly-Fuisse and Cauliflower Risotto with White Truffle Oil. Doesn;t get any better than this. Desert is Vanilla Bean Custard Ice Cream with 100 year old balsamic Vinegar and some Graham’s 10 Year Tawney Port.

Glad you are out of your slump from yesterday. The Vodka was fun, but the energy was down a notch or two.

  37. February 5, 2008

    Hotshot162

Great to see the show back to normal!! Yesterday show feel kind of weird…great show today, four totally different wines. I want to try the Carm Douro…

Great show, will deff be seeking some of those out in the near future.
QOTD its pretty cliche, but lobster is my favorite if it’s prepared right because nothing can bring on the food blues like over-cooked lobster.

    MrJCG1

Nice show Gary. i’m going to pick up a bottle of Carm tomorrow at the store.

QOTD: I love lobster but, that’s too easy. Right up there with lobster (and certainly more obscure) is sea urchin or uni in Japanese. I’ve eaten it cooked but prefer it much more in sushi form.

  43. February 5, 2008

    Marshall

Thanks for kickin the new knowledge on the tannat.

  44. February 5, 2008

GV, Great show today, had my first Languedoc-Roussillon about 2 weeks ago and it was very tight. Will decant on the next one.

QOTD: Without a doubt, Dungeness Crab, lived in the Puget Sound region for 20 years a love that crab. I’d throw the lobster in the dumpster to get to the crab.

  46. February 5, 2008

    JonE

You really got a jaded in-the-biz dude thinkin about the Laplace. I think i feel a re-awakening.

QOTD: Whatever is seasonally delicious. But beyond that I’m an old timey lobster dude, love the Kumamotos, and will always wait in line for a good chowder (littlenecks please). Cheers to shellfish.

QOTD: It would have to be oysters on the half shell with just a bit of horseradish and a shot of tabasco….
Of course Lobster and linguini with red clam sauce….

    In a word: Lobster.

    Social Project Brian

    Shrimp!

Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it. There’s, um, shrimp kebabs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir fried. There’s pineapple shrimp and lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich… That’s, that’s about it.

Can’t wait to try the Carm Douro.

  54. February 5, 2008

    QOTD: Lobster!

    GV,
Thanks again for bringing the thunder and new wines….just purchased the carm….QPR and family is what it is all about!

QOTD: I love shrimp, but if I could have a fresh lobster with melted butter and a strong chard….i am a happy camper….

    Let the Thunder roll…….

  56. February 5, 2008

    Scott EJ

Great show, GV. There’s so much focus on Bordeaux, Burgundy, et al. it’s great to see you reaching out to the more value driven areas of France. I’ve already picked up a few from WL and have not been disappointed. Portugal, too….great stuff.

QOTD: Tough one….there really isn’t a shell fish I don’t like. But, to go with one: Blackened lobster drowned in butter. Couple that w/a nice sancerre…and we are in b’ness!

  57. February 5, 2008

    NB_Spazz

QOTD: Pan seared scallops with lemon and wild rice.
Had it last time with a Chenin Blanc that was “eh” by itself but worked nicely with the food.

  58. February 5, 2008

    Dominus

The song was much better than your rant. At least the SB MVP had the right last name! Yes, you are correct, everyone starts at ground zero for 2008 except the Giants but I like our chances as long as #18 is our QB! If I were you, I would be hoping for a QB in this year’s draft. Back to wine.

Nice show, I love the wines of southern France. Have you been there? I propose an Annual WLTV Excursion (AWE) to a different wine region each year.

QOTD: Growing up and living in Maryland, it’s easy, Maryland Blue Crab though I love scallops and oysters.

    Cheers!

P.S. If we bring in more Vayniacs, does that mean wines you rate highly will be gone that much sooner? I’m tired of seeing “Not Available, Sold Out”

  59. February 5, 2008

    pete c

    QOTD- softshell crabs…sauteed, not fried.

  60. February 5, 2008

Great show! I’ve got to try the Portuguese Carm Douro!
    QoTd
It’s a tie between scallops and scampi. Gotta know it’s tough being coastal and moving inland, oh well.

  62. February 5, 2008

    JimChem

Great Show! I just learned about Tannat grapes and have a bottle to try. I will have to look for LaPlace Madiran to compliment the one I have.

    Shellfish? Mussels, of coarse.

  67. February 5, 2008

    CindyW

QOTD: Oysters on the half shell. No, wait, steamed clams on the Seattle waterfront. No, wait, mussells steamed in sherry. Or….maybe oyster shooters? No, no, definitely this week it is oysters on the half shell.

  68. February 5, 2008

Gary-Good to see you are older and wiser!!! You are now embracing The Tar Heel Blue concept with the GORGOUS Tar Heel Blue table cloth!!! Go Heels!!!!!!!!! :)

  69. February 5, 2008

    Dr. J

QOTD: I love all shellfish, but today I will claim the crawfish as my fave onycuz it’s Mardi Gras.

Gary, I see you’re using the THUNDERMUG again today. When will you come over to the dark side and call it by its true name? Say it with me, THUNDERMUG. There, now doesn’t that just feel oh so right?

  70. February 5, 2008

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

    QOTD: I like shrimp.

  75. February 5, 2008

    thisIslandEarth

    Gary,

I was about to ask you if you ever did a Madiran from SW France. I just had my first one ever 3 days ago – a 2003 Madiran Chateau Montus. At first I thought it was way to tannic but with some decanting it turned out awesome. So, thanks – very interesting episode.

    QOTD: Pan-seared scallops.

  76. February 5, 2008

    E

401 episodes, and the Madiran barrier is finally broken.

Had the ‘02 Laplace as a pop-and-pour and I didn’t find it very aggressive at all, but wonderful stuff for the price.

Perhaps the Languedoc is the place to find a viognier I actually like? Dunno, given my experiences with white Rhones …

QOD: seared big-ass scallops (caveat being that we’re 1,200 miles from any kind of ocean out here in the stix.)

  77. February 5, 2008

    Rhonda

    qotd: scallops, yum.

I am looking forward to more wines from Portugal, they are becoming some of my faves!

  78. February 5, 2008

  80. February 5, 2008

    Paul

that’s a pretty sweet theme song

And I love soft shelled crabs, the kind you fry and put on a sandwich. Perfect Jersey Shore summer food.

  81. February 5, 2008

    Achilles Mike

QOTD I love mussels- in white wine and garlic with a fresh baguette.

I’m in for the CARM- sounds fine and yes-it’s all about trying new things!

  82. February 5, 2008

    Dave Canada

    wow….cool rif!
QOTD – gotta be king crab!

  83. February 5, 2008

    Sharon

    Nice song, Sara! Cool.
Had some Merlot from WA this evening… the oak monster was in the hizzy but he’s gone as I swallowed him. All gone! Apart from *him* it was altogether O.K. BTW, more ‘Oak Monster’ t-shirts, please… those were the coolest, IMHO!
O.K., can’t compete with some of these awesome spread the thunder entries, but I’ll do something anyway!
QOTD: That’s pretty easy… lobster. From Maine. Lobster on a hot summer’s day swimming in butter with a little vino bianco outside. Heaven!

  84. February 5, 2008

    Joe Po

QOTD: Gambas al Ajillo (Shrimp with garlic) in an authentic Spanish/Portuguese restaurant!!

    AmandaM

QOTD: scallops or lobster. Oh how I love seafood.

  86. February 5, 2008

    FJDR

    QOTD: Lobster.

Wow, you have girls serenading you – if only you knew back in high school that simply starting a video wine blog could get you chicks, huh? You know, assuming the web and blogs existed when you were in HS and you could drink and all the girls had computers and high speed internet access and cell phones so they could call without tying up their parents land line phone. Yeah, that would have been great.

  87. February 5, 2008

    Joe Discher

Yes you have to trust your palate! After tasting wine for awhile and looking at the scores given by the “experts” I learned that it was more important what they wrote than the score as to wheather I would like the wine.

  88. February 5, 2008

    John Farrin

LMAO! ‘Like the tough guy who cuts his toes off with the lawnmower and keeps on cutting the grass.’ Priceless, simply priceless. You know and I know that NOBODY has ever met that guy but the imagery probably explains the wine’s characteristics perfectly.

QOTD: Dungeoness crab. From steamed with drawn butter to the BEST crab in the world for crabcakes and 15 things in between.

  89. February 5, 2008

    zac weiss

    QOTD: Mussels, they’re delish

  90. February 5, 2008

    Eli

I love the song!! Made me smile. I like lobster. I hope you voted today!!!

  91. February 5, 2008

    Chuck

QOTD – Scallops who have had a nice soak in OJ, green onion, garlic, and black pepper. Splash of olive oil, quick sear on a very hot grill. Washed down with a “razor sharp” high acid Aussie sav blanc.

  92. February 5, 2008

    Skol

    Great Episode. I enjoy shrimp.

  93. February 5, 2008

    chenrys

Those were some interesting wines. The Carm sounds especially good to me.

QOTD: Carl won’t eat shellfish of any kind…at all. I like shrimp.

  94. February 5, 2008

    Bonzo

I love Madiran wines! Thanks so much for doing a show on Southwest France. I had two bottles of the 2003 Laplace and really, really enjoyed it. It has a unique, totally focused taste – I can go with blueberries – that hangs in there for a very long time. Thanks Gary.

QOTD: Abalone that I’ve popped off the rock myself.

  95. February 5, 2008

    Palmer

QOTD: nothing beats a fresh Maine lobster steamed with some drawn butter at Cook’s Lobstah House.

  96. February 5, 2008

    half century

Qotd; it’s something very specific from one spot and is only available for 2-3 weeks in September – Little Peconic Bay Scallops. Fresh LI tomatoes fresh Oregano garlic olive oil. cook that down (adding the scallops and Oregano at the last 3 minutes, dump over your favorite pasta.
GV – this moves up to the top ten, I love the direction of the #400’s! bust it open!!!

  97. February 5, 2008

    Scott EJ

Carm’s gone!! That has got to be a record.

Oh well, time to seek out locally.

Ok, who am I kidding, there’s no selection like WL. Please get more GV.

  98. February 5, 2008

    wtvLurker

    great wines today.

qotd: Callinectes Sapidus – beautiful swimmer. the blue crab. no contest.
    a good book too:http://www.amazon.com/Beautiful-Swimmers-Watermen-Crabs-Chesapeake/dp/0316923354

while we’re on the latin kick, the Occultum Lapidem that you were so ambivalent about means i think “hidden gem”. i thought that wine seemed the most intriguing…

  99. February 5, 2008

    mateo

QOTD… Maryland Blue crab with lots of Old Bay :) yum.

  100. February 5, 2008

    tarheel17

QOTD: scallops. Mmm. And no gross black stuff to pick out.

And thanks for doing the Madiran!! I was wondering what the heck that stuff was. The wikipedia entry didn’t do a whole lot to add to your explanation, but I know a little more today than I did yesterday. Thanks!

  101. February 5, 2008

    agentorange

  103. February 5, 2008

    Orion

QotD: definitely shrimp, but none of that fried junk. Never really understood the whole lobster thing. Too pricey and it just tastes like the butter that you dip it in. Maybe I just haven’t had a good one yet…

  104. February 5, 2008

    Shadowbird

    QOTD: I’m not shellfish…I mean, I don’t like shellfish.

    Stanvh

    Gary,
I think you are right about Portugal. We have been trying wines from the Douro region for some time now. Is lobster a shellfish? If so, that’s it.

  116. February 5, 2008

    tuscanbob

Great show GV…nothing like calling out the ‘poopy-ness’ in a wine.

Man, I love all shellfish…depends on what mood I’m in. Lobster, raw oysters, seared scallops, shrimp…especially in a paella…shell-on with the heads, clambakes on labor day weekend, stonecrabs on a plastic table-clothed picnic table with a mallet in your hand. It’s all good…except for crawfish. I’ve tried and tried to like those things but I just don’t get it.

  117. February 5, 2008

    pomace

    QOTD:
    east-coast oysters…wellfleet, malpeques, belon, etc….yum.

Strong episode… one i’ll have to watch again…
    QOTD: hard to beat lobster…

  119. February 5, 2008

    Chris in Tulsa

Kick ass episode! So glad you tasted some wines from Portugal! I have just started to explore these wines on my own and trying to “trust my PAL” and have really loved the wines I have tried so far! Looking forward to more off the beaten path wines and value driven wines you might try in future shows.

QOTD: What’s better than fresh oysters on the half shell with a simple Muscadet wine, Vinho Verde or can I say it, lager beer!

  120. February 5, 2008

    Anthony L.

Very Cool episode. I love Portuguese Reds

  121. February 5, 2008

    Marc

    Cute song…fits the show well!

QOTD: Lobster..big, sweet, fresh Australian lobster…eaten in Australia of course!

Damn…I just knocked my big-ass glass over and broke it!!!!! Thankfully, I already drank the wine in it :)

  122. February 5, 2008

    Walter45

Really excited to try the Carm Douro. I like what you do explaining the smells and tastes so I can try what fits my pal. P.S. The Nero D’avola from Morgantes you did a while back was alright but improved after a couple of hours decanting. Good show today!

QOTD: I love shrimp. Shrimp is amazing. Any wine recommendations for shrimp?

  123. February 5, 2008

    Russ J

    QOTD: Mussels, baby!
Speaking of mussels, what happened to GV’s muscles? No work out talk in a LONG while! Plenty of cheese eating though……
Actually, my favorite shellfish is the oyster but no easy lead in to ballbusting there.

  124. February 5, 2008

    Nickyb85

QOTD: I love me some scallops, cooked just right with lots of garlic and butter!

  125. February 5, 2008

    laposte

    QOTD:
Snails with chablis….good as it gets.

  127. February 5, 2008

    ChrisR

If you need a song to tell you your not an alcoholic, then you probably are. Great show today! I’m loving the Portuguese wines and hopefully I’ll be able to get into the Southwestern France wines. Don’t know about the stuff from Cote-de-Provence and the Southeast area (had some of their unfined/unfiltered stuff and was repulsed by the crap) but I’m not totally turned off yet. Now I want to see the new Winelibrary, I think that’s a great idea giving these regions more floorspace. This is going to be a special chapter in WLTV, I can feel it!!

  128. February 5, 2008

Shrimp – U.S. farm raised or wild caught only.

QOTD- Snow Crab, I think it is the best of the crabs even though it is spiney and sometimes painful to open up.

  133. February 5, 2008

    Coupe 60

Cmon GV….people were buying the carm douro because of the one review on Cellar Tracker…I was on this early…Thanks to Gene V who turned me onto the 2004…

and maybe….people don’t leave the show after 10 secs because they don’t like the yelling…Maybe they leave because they ONLY like the yelling…Maybe you should do an entire show in the same voice you open it up Gary…just something to think about

  135. February 5, 2008

    The Fanjestic

Good Episode – interested in trying the CARM – and I really thought the song was cool too.

QOTD – Split between King Crab and Maine Lobster with melted (and extra salt added) butter. Mud bugs (craw daddies) are a CLOSE second! Oysters are a not-so-distant third….

  139. February 5, 2008

    John Watson

QOTD: mussels, no doubt. In lemon, butter and garlic. Yum!

  140. February 5, 2008

    Jahlove

QOTD: That’s a tough one. Would have to say scallops.

Sarah sounds like she could have written the Juno soundtrack single-handedly.

  141. February 5, 2008

    aaronb

QOTD: Spicy shrimp and sun-dried tomato cream sauce over fresh homemade fettuccine. A bit hard to pair with wine though.

  142. February 5, 2008

    CoolHandLuke

Great show! Really focused except for the football rant. I can’t wait for the draft. I love lobster, would love to try the Brittany lobster. Raw or slightly barbequed Tomales Bay oysters with ice cold Pacifico. Mmmmmmm. Raw live scallop with a little lemon and sea salt.

  143. February 5, 2008

    Reed H

QOTD: Fresh Dungeness crab from Hood Canal Washington by far. I usually have it with cocktail sauce.

Jumbo shrimp dipped in a marmalade and horse radish sauce.

  148. February 5, 2008

    Remps108

Really enjoyed today’s show, though I’ll have to write a new song now that someone else has already written one so similar, and I’m not one to infringe on any copyrights. Or maybe I’ll just do a punk version of that one like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

QOTD: I’m big into sushi, and a couple days ago, I tried surf clam (”Hokkigai”) sushi for the first time and loved it. It was very sweet, briny, and had a rose petal-y flavor that was awesome. Don’t know if that’s my all-time favorite though. This is a big toss-up between that, Maine lobster, king crab, and sea scallops. Or mussels. Crap, I love shellfish!

  149. February 5, 2008

    Jerry the 2thdr

    QOTD: Lobster-goes great with Champagne

  151. February 5, 2008

    Jaybird

That is an interesting region of France, I recently read about it in “The Wine Bible”. The 2005 vintage could be a gold mine if you can come across some of those hidden secrets.

QOTD: ALASKAN KING CRAB LEGS…DAMB IT NOW I’M HUNGRY!

  152. February 5, 2008

    Blake

I love seeing you expose the areas of the world which have yet to be promoted as really good wine regions. Crazy educational as well as fun to see.

QOTD: Shrimp, and its not because I love the flavor, its quite opposite actually. Every year, while Red Lobster holds its endless shrimp meal, myself and a dozen of my best friends go out, and have an eating contest. We had our 7th “Shrimpfest” a few months ago, which the winner downed 212 shrimp (a new Shrimpfest record!!!) in a 2 1/2 hour period. Crazy, I know! But to be honest I love a good lobster tail.

  153. February 5, 2008

    Mike Z in SD

I like good seared scallops, and lobster when I can get it (which is not often at all)

Amazing how some wines can smell like pig crap.

  154. February 5, 2008

    Will Ska

    qotd: Blue Crab

For the Bila Haut it isn’t symmetry you were trying to describe, actually it sounds like you were trying to get at how the old world and new world flavors didn’t harmonize well.

  155. February 5, 2008

    Todd S

    QOTD: Softshell Crab. Mmmmmmm

  156. February 5, 2008

QOTD: My favorite shellfish is scallops, because I am from Long Island and I am all about loyalty.

  158. February 5, 2008

    Mason

Another awesome tasting with poop. PIG crap to be exact. Must find that wine… Gary, thanks for entertaining me day after day; it’s always fun and informative.

QOTD: I am going to go with crab legs. That qualifies, right?

  159. February 6, 2008

Got mad love for the vino with value. YO V2 (that’s V squared: Value Vino) You can use that Gary, I permit you and won’t crush you.

QOTD: I don’t know what it is in English but in Japanese it’s “Red Shellfish” or “Akagai”

If anyone knows what that is hook a brother up.

  161. February 6, 2008

    HuskerJamie

    QOTD: Scallops tied with crawfish.

  162. February 6, 2008

the Viognier must have been acidified, because that grape just does not have that kind of acididy on its own.

Good show. I keep searching for wines from Portugal, other than port. This one sounds like a winner. Seems like you are sold out already though. :^(

QOTD: It’s always difficult to pick just one, but I’ll go with fresh scallops. Runner up is lobster. Both with just a bit of butter and lemon.

  166. February 6, 2008

    Justin Viger

QotD: Shrimp. Although does it have a shell

  167. February 6, 2008

    jason carey

as to the Madiran,, they are now using heavy Micro ox in Madiran to tame the tannnin. The better Madirans are not imported to the US, or are very limited in their distribution channels. Its time to get more Madirans here in this country and the ones with 100 % tannant are falling by the wayside.. too bad if you are willing to wait 10 years at the minumum.. the full bore ones are excellent.

  168. February 6, 2008

Lurker coming out of the cellar…. on episode 401

QOTD: shellfish aren’t kosher, but i like fresh scallop sashimi style with lemon and soy sauce. don’t tell my grandmother

  181. February 6, 2008

    KennyMac

Speaking of interesting odors, I once had a boxed pinot gris that filled the room with the distinctive smell of slightly rotten fish when poured. Not a nice nose. Some thing had obviously gone wrong, as by all accounts it was a fairly decent wine, even in the box. So, if a corked wine can be “corked”, does a box wine get “bagged”? What about a screw capped wine? Screwed???

QOTD: I love scallops, especially seared, but almost any way will do. Also really enjoy mussels, particularly if the sauce is right.

  182. February 6, 2008

    Yoni Rabkin

QOTD: Don’t come the raw prawn GV, prawns would have to be the tippiest toppiest shellfish for me. Although I also love Yabbies!

Just reviewing some TN’s I made at a NZ tasting about 4 months before I discovered WLTV, oh how I wish I was making better notes back then, I mean once they’ve been deciphered they were really really very poor back then.

    GV,
If you want to try some good Tannat that is produced in the good ole US of A, try Tablas Creek out in West Paso Robles. They are the sister winery to Beaucastel in the Rhone and make a lot of single varietal bottlings that are really good including the aforementioned Tannat.

    QOTD: Lobster

  193. February 6, 2008

    Anthony L.

    QOTD: Lobster, without a doubt.

Dude, Please, please, please don’t make that the theme song to winelibrary TV.

    Gary,
Thank you thank you and thank you for sharing those wines with us. Its good that you mix it up and try wines from relatively obscure regions that many of us are unfamilar with What a great education! Now what can you tell me about Banyuls that you mentioned briefly the other day. I saw one in a local Kroger and am tempted to try it from Domaine Du Mas Blanc for about 40 bones. Is it worth it? Have you tryed any? Please help as I some education on this.

I am unofficially giving a name to this flavor profile of (wet hay/horse poop) that makes its appearance from time to time on the thunder show…..How about “FARMER BRETT”

  212. February 6, 2008

    Kmarie

Very nice song. I think we all need to dip into our creative selves and spread the thunder with poetry, art, music, dance….

  224. February 6, 2008

Fantastic episode. I think Portugal (especially douros) is producing AMAZING wines. I’m not saying that just because you say it like every 45 seconds on WLTV, but because the douros I’ve had were in the $30-40 range and easily tasted like $60+ bottles. Amazing QPR.

QOTD: I’d have to say lobster. I think it’s the most delicious, and European lobsters always tasted better than Maine lobsters. Both are insanely delicious if cooked properly. Sea urchin roe and octopus are favorites, too.

Awesome show, I am a novice to the wine life and I had a question. I am old fashion in that I do not have a myspace or facebook, so I am going to paste my question here in hopes of either you (Gary) or someone else will post some recommendations. I wanted to know if you are familiar with the world of Kosher Wines, if so what bottles would you consider to have a unique taste. Thanks for the help and I apologize if this has been covered in a previous show. Once again, I find your show both fascinating and entertaining.

QOTD- Scallops, love the scallops. Got to have them cooked though. I had a scallop the last time my wife and I went out for sushi that almost made me loose the meal. Oysters on the half shell are a very close second- those I prefer raw accompanied by a Chablis.

    Great episode today Gary!

I’m all about soft shell crab and shrimp. Those two could duke it out and the only winner would be my stomach. Mmmm… soft shell crab sushi…

I work in the wine industry and about two years ago I discovered Languedoc-Roussillon and funny enough I wasn’t even in France ***Insert snare beat dumb joke sound***. It’s been my little secret when people are over at our house. Their so used to drinking wine from the Okanagan, that when I hit them with some serious south of France action its ova. Thanks for the show mang.
QOTD: The best shell fish no question fresh that day Vancouver Island oysters! I eat that bad boy like a harbour seal…. Raw, baked, Fried doesn’t matter. and when in Vancouver (Rodney’s Oyster Bar).

Just recently discovered your AWESOME video’s! I absolutely LOVE this show, the love, the passion, the wines…. everything!
I am fairly new to wines. Drank a lot of them already, but never paid too much attention. Your show sparked the interest and now I buy pairs of wines to taste them myself. Thanks to you GV!

Even though I sometimes feel the shaky buzzing of some kind of once dormant but oyster-awakened nervous system disorder the day after eating them, I still prefer oysters over any shellfish; East Coast, home-shucked, small to medium sized, with a tiny squirt of lemon, chewed a few or many times (remember, you’re eating, not fellating it).

Mussels mariniere would be a close second. A big bowl of them with an outrageously priced baguette makes me feel quite vital and sprightly.

  246. February 6, 2008

    Bernie Bearnaise

Nice flight of wines that you chose and all represented value. It is often difficult to locate your featured wines here in Maryland, land of the Blue Crab and archaic Blue Laws.

The three tier (producer/wholesale distributor/retailer) marketing approach of wine selling is under attack. Everyone wants to protect their own interests including the States who make big bucks selling wine/liquor/beer. The Supreme Court ruled that it was OK for a winemaker to ship directly to the consumer. The interpretation that retailers such as WLTV should also have that right is now the topic. The distributors give hefty contributions to their legislators and argue that the current system is the most efficient and what if minors were to order wine online? This is a weak argument as most shippers require an adult to sign for the wine. Smaller producers will not get shelf space vs. large scale producer/corporations. Free Gary T-Shirt?

I’m off to look for some Carm….

    QOTD:

You’re obviously mocking those of us who keep kosher and can’t eat shellfish!

Seriously, though, before I stopped eating shellfish, while lobster, mussels, oysters, and crawfish all had their place, there was nothing more satisfying than sitting down with a couple pounds of spiced, steamed shrimp, shell-on, and going at it with my family, a big bowl for the shells, and a bunch of cocktail sauce. Mm, mm, mm.

Once again a very informative show to help expand your viewers palates. My wife and I have tasted a few wines from the regions presented and have enjoyed them all. You’re right! Portugese wines are a great value and bring serious “thunder” as you like to say.
QOTD: Any shellfish is good, but if I have to choose, clams are my favorite-raw, with a good sauvignon blanc, chablis or white burgundy.

  272. February 6, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Great song. Don’t think I could get past the pig crap nose on the Domain Bila. That is one smell that makes me nauseated. Great song from Sarah. Hope she writes a few more stanzas. How about a metal version?

Favorite shellfish; I live near the Chesapeake Bay so it has to be blue crabs though really good oysters will also do it for me.

Steamed…….boiled……fried…….doesn’t make squat, it’s all good. [For N.E. Pat. fans, a good plate of shrimp, (with a glass of Voignier), will help you forget].

Awesome show, Gary. I’m so amped you guys are adding to your Portugese offerings. I live in NYC (Boston transplant), and I begrudge the fact that even the “big” wine stores in NY/NJ seriously skimp on their Portugese offerings. Great QPR with Portugal, and I know you guys will do a good job posting tasting notes and recommendations, as you need to separate the bad from the great with Portugal (much like Chile). I try not to visit my brother-in-law often (although he lives 10 minutes from Wine Library), though I may need to take a deep breath and see him more often…that’s how much I love Portugese wines. And this is coming from an Irish kid from Boston. Talk to some Portugese guys from Newark – those guys can find the hidden gems that don’t even come close to breaking the bank!

Great show, thanks for reviewing the Madiran wine that you carry. I have been waiting for the review of this one and I hope to see more Tannat wines including those from Uruguay in future episodes. Kudos to the direction that your next 100 shows are taking.

Tough to pick among shellfish as I like most all of them, but I am going to have to go with the Dungeness crab (paired with a New Zealand SB) with a big shout out to crawfish.

    Hi Gary, Mott,

I just discovered you at about episode 393, thought OMG this is awesome, and then almost cried when you said 400 would be your last. I’m writing from the land of the rising sun, and have tried to “friend you up” on Facebook too. I’ve got a few nice suppliers of wine here in Tokyo, and this long weekend I will be searching for the Carm Douro perhaps as a celebratory wine for one of my longest weeks Ever at work (it’s thursday here and I’ve racked up at least 60 hours of work already). I still find time after I’m home to down load you onto my ipod and also watch a few back episodes to chill out before going to bed.

Don’t forget to friend me up on Facebook!

    Cheer,
    Kana

QOTD- Originally from New Orleans, so it would be crawfish. During the spring time there is nothing like a huge crawfish boil will family and friends outside while pounds and pounds of crawfish are dumped on the table for all to enjoy in a community style eatery. Normally everyone has beer to go with the crawfish. However, my goal for the spring time is to find a great wine to pair with spicy, spicy crawfish. Don’t forget to suck the head.

Secondly, I would root for the Jets if or when you buy them! It’s a shame I can’t say the same for the Packers. They are the only publicly franchised team in the NFL. Until Preseason…GO PACK!

This wine kind of worries me. I would try it, though. Sounds like it is a little flawed. Hint, too much Brett! The fruit bomb aspect tells me it is a little imbalanced, hence a high pH combined with dirty barrels. Voila! Rustic Wine!

I was of course talking about the wine from the Languedoc-Roussillon.

My favorite shellfish dish was served to me out in the western part of France in a town named La Baule. They have a restaurant that serves mussels (moules en francais) in a white wine and light cheese sauce. Finger lickin’ good!

Gr8 GV!! One of your best. You were indeed on point.
Sorry about taking so long to get around to watching this one, hope my comments don’t get lost. I’m with you on the Viognier, most have the problem of falling off on the finish. Your description intrigues me and I’ll have to try it. Did you ever try the La Grange Voignier I sent you?
Good info on the Tannat. I’ll have to send you a bottle of ours, hope you like it.
Exploring wine is my favorite past time and hobby so this show was a treat.
QOTD: mmmm tough choice since so many are so good. Either lobster or scallops. Probably lobster.

    Great show!
Love the “different wines” from unsung regions.
I think that I have mentioned this before, but I had these mussels on the west coast of France once that were served in a white wine, garlic, and light cheese sauce that were amazing.
Other than that – scallops all the way with a Puligny-Montrachet!

QOTD: Fresh scallops from Great Mercury Island (40min boat ride from home, we free dive in 30ft and collect em) fried up with a little butter, garlic and lime juice served with a Peagesus Bay Reisling. Yum!
