Haven’t watched the ep yet (still at work), but I ate an apple a few minutes ago and it tasted EXACTLY like an Oregon pinot gris I had last week. Felt compelled to share. Looking forward to seeing this new classic!

As a Texan, I really just see OK as my hat.
Just kidding! I didn’t know there was any rivalry…maybe it’s just on the OK side of the border.

Like the concept of the guest bringing in the wine. Pipes reminds me of the laid back gal from Sideways who liked her Pinot.

    QOTD 1. 67.

QOTD 2. I can think of few Sectys I wouldn’t mind following around.

    QOTD 3. Hillary.

    tremendous episode:

your dad mentioned how he found his classmate that he has not seen in over 40 years (which btw, is a hint for the age Question ;) ) but i probably guessing it was through this site:

    http://www.odnoklassniki.ru/

my parents and their friends have been using it to get back in touch with their old friends or classmates (thats what the site is called in Russian)

    sweet, awesome episode..

    QOTD1: 54
    QOTD2a: don’t work yet
    QOTD2b: see above
    QOTD3: McCain

Rockbridge! This winery is about an hour from where I grew up in VA. Stopped there a few summers ago & bought a bottle of riesling. Nice to see it on the show!

    Is Pipes single? Amazing episode.

  32. February 7, 2008

    Andy

Mr. Vaynerchuck, you must be 56 years old. And I hope Hillary Clinton is our next President because she drinks wine and Obama doesn’t.

  33. February 7, 2008

SASHA – DROPPING THE SHIT LINE! YESSSSSS!!!!!!!

Great episode. QOTD: 57, Romney, and nobody to shadow at this time. Pipes good job on the show, and have fun on your trip.

  36. February 7, 2008

    KAHUNA

Sure Gary yesterday it was cool to drink a wine from Napa that had grapes from Washington- Now poor old Oklahoma get killed for it- BASTARD!

    Rob P

This is hilarious…the show was completely hijacked!!!

  40. February 7, 2008

    Katherine

Vivian loves all the Vayniacs too! Vivian TOTALLY wants to sponsor an entire line of WLTV baby onesies. Today she expanded her palate with her purple hippo doll, a (clean) diaper, and a teething ring.

GV’s QOTD: Sasha is 56 years old.

SASHA, MOTT and PIPERJS – CLASSIC.

Love how Sasha drops the S-Bomb every episode. Freaking awesome.

Great ep GV and gang – one for the books.

    Wine-Brow = never happened.

    QOTD: Sasha is 54?

QOTD: Astronaut – but it would have to be in space. I have ALWAYS wanted to go to the stars.

    QOTD: OBAMA (fingers crossed)

    QOTD1: 61
QOTD2: Greg Smallman. Maker of AMAZING classical guitars.
QOTD3: It’s tough to tell who’s even going to win the Dem. nomination. I hope Obama. Clinton just rubs me wrong.

  46. February 7, 2008

    Adam J

    Crazy show.
#1:I would jobshadow a pilot of some sort. One of my life’s ambitions is to learn to fly.
#2. Sasha, it’s too early to tell. I could tell you who I want to win, but that’s not necessarily the same as who’s going to win. The race is too tight right now and it could go any way.

  47. February 7, 2008

    bigmay

    Crazy awesome show!

Q(s)OTD: Sasha is 59; cliche but shadowing GV would be a lot of fun – I imagine his energy is contagious; gut feeling is Obama.

  48. February 7, 2008

    JordanW

That was a ton of fun… nice job Pipes!

    QOTD1: 42
    QOTD2: The President

    q’s otd : 51, GV, Obama

Great ep! Pipes, you lived a dream… exciting! (It is cool, very cool, that you were able to join Gary and Sasha for the show =-) )

Gary, I appreciate your honesty regarding the wines. Even though things got very busy between you and your guests, you were able to keep us focused on the wines and their quality… or lack thereof!

  50. February 7, 2008

    ChiTown

    QOTD:
    1: 60
    2: George Bush
    3: McCain

  51. February 7, 2008

    Rob P

I would shadow 2007 Masters Champion and Iowa Hawkeye fan Zach Johnson.

  52. February 7, 2008

    Elliot Essman

Next president, after an emergency law change, Arnold Schwarzennegar.

And by the way this law change will allow both Sasha, who is 55, and Gary, who must wait until he is 35, to run for this office.

  53. February 7, 2008

    Panosh

    Wow! where to start.

QOTD 1: No wine-Brow. Sounds like a sloppy drinker to me.
    QOTD 2: 57
QOTD 3: It will not be Clinton or Obama
QOTD 4: Shadow…..hmmm….After today, it would be GV. But after the energy slows down probably Warren Buffett. Just would like to see how someone like him thinks.

This was fun, but now I am late for my meeting.

  54. February 7, 2008

    Rani Haykal

That was one of the greatest most ADHD episodes I’ve seen so far!!!

I like seeing the different wines from across North America.

    QOTD: GV: 52 years old
PIPES: I’d probably want to shadow a professional skate boarder….just to see what their lives really consist of. It seems very hollow to me, especially for the amount of money some of them make.
SASHA: I’m afraid to answer this question for the sheer fact that almost any answer I give is disappointing to me.

    Graziella

Ok, so I have some catching up to do….
Questions of the Day Answers from Me, Graziella:
    1)Fav shellfish? crab meat, mmmm!
2)Where do I see my palate in the next year?
Expanding to taste things I’ve never dreamed of tasting because of Gary Vaynerchuk…

Hello to Jen “Pipes,” you were very charming today! ;-)

And Hello to Mr. Vaynerchuk! I believe you are slightly over the age of 33, and I think the next president may be Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton based on popularity polls so far.

Btw, can’t believe you mentioned “Scantron sheets” today, Gary! Haven’t heard that in years, THANK GOD!

I love the incorporation of family in your show, I am that way with my family too…my sister is the costumer and one of the main characters in my musical, my mom is the booking manager, and well, my Dad, is the “investor,” and critic!

Lastly, I’d like to shadow the work- life of the Dalai Lama because his energy is so calm and peaceful…something I’d like to learn!

  56. February 7, 2008

    sam

i listen to you and to pension calculations. now all i need is a glass of wine.

Loved this show. There is just something very special about the way Gary interacts with family and his guests.

    QOTD 1: 54
QOTD 2: Any National Geographic photographer so that I can gain a deeper appreciation of what it takes to get those tremendous photographs!
QOTD3: McCain over Hillary, although I would love to see Obama win.

  60. February 7, 2008

    Mathieu

Hi Gary, Great Show! Pipes is one of your best co-hosts yet!

    QOTD1: 59
QOTD2: I’d Like to Follow the Coen Brothers and see how they make those cool movies
QOTD3: I’m Canadian, but Ron Paul seems like the real deal to me

  61. February 7, 2008

    Robin C

Fun show. Jen seems like part of the family – she’s a natural.
    QOTD: 63ish
QOTD: a wine maker, like Kris Curran formerly of Sea Smoke.
    QOTD: Obama

  62. February 7, 2008

    sharon

fun show…liked the chaos and silliness qotd:52, no comment, no comment.

  63. February 7, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

    GV — 60
    Sasha — McCain, alas

An entertaining episode! And I really dislike it when wineries import juice from someplace else!

    “T”

  64. February 7, 2008

    Andy

Give it up for Pipes , you go girl
QOTD—- Sasha is 62 ……….. Hate to say it (Hillary C) then the wine world will change for the BAD…………….

  65. February 7, 2008

    espressokev

    ohhhh man was that fun.

    QOTDs…

1:Sasha has that rare, ageless, good looking face. Who needs a number?
2:Does it matter? All the candidates are the same underneath.
    3:My Fiance’s dad,
4:cuz i love the idea of workin’ hard and bein’ outside. (He works for the DOT of Iowa)

  66. February 7, 2008

    Wine Not?

Great episode, ALL of you! The interaction was great! I love trying wines from other states, especially the ones not known as “wine states”. Too bad the Arkansas wine crashed and burned…

QOTD1: Glasses sort of prohibits the wine-brow, you know?
    QOTD2: 58
QOTD3: Gary, of course, but I’d probably be exhausted by the end of it! If not GV, then the couple that is currently going to all of the places in 1000 Things to See Before You Die on the travel channel. So cool!!!!
    QOTD4: ??????????????????????????????

  67. February 7, 2008

    paul

    QsOTD:
    1) 61
    2) Ted Lemon
    3) Obama

  68. February 7, 2008

    thisIslandEarth

Wow. What a SWEET episode. Pipes – I love you. What’s your “status”. If you like football too – well then name the place and I’ll be there :-)
Gary – your dad is awesome. I just want to give him a hug.

BTW, the reason that WLTV has dropped in the internet ratings is because Mott has lost his drive ever since he dump Jessica Simspon for Gisele. Please Gary, tell Mott NOT to bring Gisele to the WLTV broadcasts.

Anyways, great episode. And Pipes – I really do have a serious crush on you…

  69. February 7, 2008

    Sasha! ^_^

    Gary! ^_^

    Katherine

OK, Vivian has gone to her evening nap, so I can answer the multiple QOTD’s.

    1. GV, your dad is ageless, and, I agree, he is shockingly handsome.
    2. I would shadow Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, so I could learn how to deal with my dog Sophie.
    3. I have no idea, but I think signs point to Barack Obama.

  71. February 7, 2008

    Lars

    Gary Who?

Nice job, Pipes, Mott and Sacha!

    QOTD’s:
    1: = Dirt
2: Been there done that would do it again. My Dad. Good days.
3: McCain. With Romney pulling out, there’s gonna be a few months of the Dems throwing dirt on each other. Whoever wins will come our dirty.

    Lars

  72. February 7, 2008

    Ryan

This was my least favorite episode I’ve seen so far. I couldn’t even finish it. There was too much non-wine dialogue.

  73. February 7, 2008

    Plminer

WOW! I didn’t expect that…turn on WLTV to see one of my SoCal tasting group home girls in the WL house!!! Way to go Pipers! SO RAD!!!! (no dool). Awesome show GV, Jen and Sasha, although they need to mic Sasha better, low talker. GV and pops, ying and yang, energetic and loud vs. laid back and low. So much fun, thanks gang.
QOTD: #1 63, #2 Shadow Tiger Woods because he’s a golf phenom and I’d also like to see what his daily routine is outside of golf (and to hang on his yacht).
#3 I don’t care as long as it’s not Bush!!!!

  74. February 7, 2008

    */^_^\*

    qotd: 55, bloomberg, a winemaker

i’ve had some pretty decent syrah from central OK. it was $30, so not really a value. too much of the market in OK is in love with white zin and whatnot so with the backwards state alcohol laws i imagine winemakers have a difficult time making serious wine….

  75. February 7, 2008

    hugh

I’m really lovin’ it when you have eye candy on the show….and Jen’s not bad either…

    1) I think pops is 60 right?
    2) Tiger Woods….why?…..duh!!
    3) I fear it may be Hilary….

  76. February 7, 2008

    Danny C

    QOTD #1: I would say 58

QOTD #2: For an alternate career I’d probably want to follow around either Jay-Z or Kanye…live the good life!

    QOTD #3: OBAMA!

  77. February 7, 2008

    Jack

QOTD: Dad, 56; Shadow, George Bush – to understand better how a complete idot can distroy the country; Next President, Hillary!

Gary, the best show ever! Love your Dad and Pipes.

  78. February 7, 2008

    John Blue Label

Possibly the most enjoyable episode of the thunder show ever. Pipes should co host more often. She’s easy on the eyes.

    Sasha is 59

    I would shadow Guiseppe Quintarelli
    He is a master winemaker

I refuse to answer Sasha’s question because all of the choices on both sides make me ill.

  79. February 7, 2008

    Chris

QOTD1: No, but I have gotten my nose
    QOTD2: 56
QOTD3: Shadow- Winemaker at Mouton Rothschild while figuring out that year’s blend
QOTD: Probably McCain, Hillary is too polarizing and Obama is too young & inexperienced

  80. February 7, 2008

    dan p

    57
I’d like the shadow Kiefer Sutherland to make sure that he was ok because no one plays Jack Bauer and lives to tell about it.
    With any luck Monty Brewster

  81. February 7, 2008

    Barb

Could have saved your palate some hassle; Chateau Aux Arc wines are pathetic, I don’t know who she talked to or what she was on. If you noticed it said AMERICAN Syrah not ALTUS; I can guarantee that was CA juice. I have been forced to taste some of their wine at work…major Pass!!!On the plus side; fruit flies drop dead in them!

  82. February 7, 2008

    Anthony L.

    QOTD: 63
I’d like to shadow Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia
The next President will be John McCain

Like the episodes with guest Vayniacs. Keep it up.

  83. February 7, 2008

    thisIslandEarth

    Oh – forgot:

    QOTD #1: Sasha – LXII

    QOTD #2: Sponge Bob Squarepants

    QOTD #3: Mott

  84. February 7, 2008

    Dominus

Wowwwww, great show. Kudos to Pipes. If she had let me know she was going to be on WLTV, I would taken the next train to Jersey and brought a couple other VA wines for the wine/lovefest.

    QsOTD:

    a) I’m guessing Sasha is in his early 60s?
    b) Shadow? Good question. I would have to say George W. Why? I want to see what it is like to run the most powerful nation on Earth.
    c) Next President: McCain

On a political/wine note: I want to know which candidate supports “direct shipping”? I’ll vote for him/her just on that one issue. The rest don’t matter to me. As Romney said, “the same people will go back but sitting in different chairs.”

    Cheers!

  85. February 7, 2008

    angryphoton

    QOTD1: Sasha = 60
    QOTD2: Steve Jobs
    QOTD3: Obama

  86. February 7, 2008

    Sharon

Wow GV’s show hijacked, but it was funny! Thanks for the link to the t-shirt contest entries… too funny! Jennifer is a cool lady… very laid-back.
QOTDs: Sasha’s a cool Dad… am not going to hazard a guess as to his age. But I’m sure GV inherited his heart-throb attractiveness from him!
    Shadow a celebrity… hmmm could I replace Angelina Jolie for a day :-) ?
U.S. President… I voted for Hilary on super Tuesday… I will vote for whichever Dem candidate in the presidential election… I like Obama but voting for Hilary is sort of like voting for both Clintons… I think he would be a shadow president, speaking of shadowing. Both Hilary and Obama have weaknesses but are vastly superior to that scary old nutbag McCain.

  87. February 7, 2008

    Daniel

Great episode! Pipes is one of the best co-host you’ve had and of course your dad to.

    QOTD 1: 58
QOTD 2: Shadow GV of course, but I probably couldn’t keep up with him from the way Pipes described how hard he works.
    QOTD 3: McCain

  88. February 7, 2008

    Redmeat

ok changed my name so it all matches,,,,,

QOTD….dad is 61…..I would shadow Emeril Lagasse, as I am a HUGE foodie(and he brings the Thinder like GV!)…I hope it will just not be McCain or Clinton

  89. February 7, 2008

    Clinton

A British Columbia wine :-) Osoyoos is a few kilometers from the U.S. border. GV – it is pronounced “O-soy-use”. Funny, with British Columbia’s exorbitant liquor tax, that bottle is cheaper in the U.S. than in BC ($40 CAD). Excellent episode!

    QOTD 1: Ageless
QOTD 2: Hillary (she’s the least liberal candidate remaining)
    QOTD 3: A restaurant critic

  90. February 7, 2008

    OregonMike

Great episode! A little disjointed but I loved how genuine it was!

    1) Who cares, however old he is he looks great!
    2) Depends on who gets nominated but either Obama or McCain!
    3) Day-trader…I would love to see how much those guys REALLY work

BRING ON THE ORGANIC BEAR EAR T-SHIRT!

  91. February 7, 2008

    mikey lennon

Wow a fantastic episode. I love how different the guests are on the show. Sometimes you need an off the wall episode. Nice to see Mott and your father also.

    QOTD 1. fifty five
QOTD 2a. Dirty Jobs camera crew 2b. Just cause it seems quite interesting.
    QOTD 3. Obama

  92. February 7, 2008

    Little Jonny

Are you kidding me?!!! My brain is a mess right now from trying to figure out what just happened, especially considering the fact that I just drank 2 glasses of wine while watching!!! That was a crazy show, but I like variety….

QOTD1- judging by Gary’s age, Sasha (sp?) should be about 58
QOTD2- I wish I could shadow any Nat’l geographic photographer, OR any Chilean fishing guide during Oct/November so I could see the most beautiful places in the world and learn a bit about photography or fly fishing along the way.

  93. February 7, 2008

    RANDI

    Sasha is def. a hottie!
    What a good-lookn family!
    :)

Wouldnt it be great if BREAD could cure diseases!!
Great Episode! Pipes is way cool…it cant be easy to pull off a show next to Gary & Sasha!

QOTD: I would shadow an OB doctor..deliver babies all day OR..Glen aka Winecrazy..he’s such a mystery.
    Hahaha.

    Tom L

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME SHOW!!! Pipes was great. But I’m a bit confused. I’ve been into the WL store at least 100 times and never even seen GV working or doing anything once (maybe he just can’t be seen over the wine racks). ;-D

    QOTD 1: 69
    QOTD 2: Obama

  95. February 7, 2008

    Logan

    Funny episode

    I) He said he had you when he was 21 and you are 32 so that would make him 53.
II) Tom Brady, just so i could taunt him continuously all day.
III) COLBERT! woo! if the giants can win the superbowl, then i bet the same miracle could put this guy in the office.

Roman numerals, thats how i roll

    1: 60
2: French or Italian wine buyer
3: Obama– wow, I had just been pondering how WLTV seemed to exist in a political vacuum!

    EvanR

This episode is an instant classic! Your dad and Pipes make great co-hosts.
    QOTD:56, any astronaut, and Obama.

    QOTD Gary: 61.

QOTD Pipes: The Mottster, I think he drinks heavily when Gary leaves the store. =)

    QOTD Sascha: Obama.

Holy cow that was a crazy episode!!! And just for the record I have had a little wine between my eyebrows because I do the SNIFFY SNIFF!
QOTD- Sasha 62 and still better looking that Gary
QOTD- I would like to shadow my dog for a day, what do they do when we are not around.
QOTD- Mcain will be elected and his VP George Allen will assume the position within 1 year due to health problems ( just a guess for Sasha since we still have 9 months to go and anything can happen, at this point I don’t think Mcain has even named a VP for the ticket) I don’t really like politcal questions since everyone has a different opinions and they are equally passionate about their beliefs but since it Sasha asked what the heck.

Q’sOTD: 68 but living and looking like 50. I will assume GV is a given for the shadow question so I will skip him and go to number 2. I would shadow Gordon Ramsey to see what a successful chef does in the kitchen and a successful restauranteur does to build his business. The next president will be Hillary.

Really fun show, love Pipes as the cohost and seeing the patriarch of the Vaynerchuk clan is a great treat as well. It really reaffirms WLTV is the Thunder show.

Great episode, even if the wines were sub par.
QOTD 1: 59, though he could be younger. Being Gary’s dad could age anyone!
QOTD 2: Shadow United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to get a glimpse of the big picture.
QOTD 3: Next Prez will be (a) somebody with skin thick enough to stand up to all the dirt that will be flung in the coming months, and (b) someone with a higher IQ than the current Prez. Those 2 criteria probably leave Obama, McCain, Clinton, and Sasha’s pigeons in the running.

    QOTD: (Gary) Sasha is 62
QOTD: (Jenn) I’d love to shadow a CIA undercover agent to see how he works because it would be fun to see how he conceals his identity.
    QOTD: (Sasha) McCain

    QOTD2: Alain Ducasse

Seriously, these shows keep getting better and better! You have brought unorganized chaos to an art form :) Pipes may want to think about working in TV. She comes accross very well.

    QOTD 1:52
    QOTD 2: Probably Obama
QOTD 3: I’m 61 and shadowing GV for a day would be a death sentence so we can’t go there. I have always thought that Andy Rooney has THE cake job in America. 3 minutes a week that may take him all of 4 hours to prepare for. Think about it. Plus, shadowing him for a day would surely include a nap or two :)

  114. February 7, 2008

    FJDR

    Good show, Pipes seems nice.

QOTD1: You’re implying that he’s older than he looks, so I’ll say 68, even though he looks much younger than that.

QOTD2: How about a park ranger, deep in Yellowstone or Yosemite.

QOTD3: I’ll guess McCain, but a lot can happen between now and Nov.

  115. February 7, 2008

    GV,
What a great show! Top 5 that I’ve seen. I was laughing/smiling the whole time. Pipes is a beautiful, intelligent, and chill woman. I would love spending an evening having wine and conversation with her if she ever passes through central-Illinois. (??) Anyway, an instant classic, even with less than spectacular wine offerings.

    qotd GV: 73
qotd Pipes: park ranger in Glacier National Park (or some other beautiful preserve)- a great excuse to go backpacking
    qotd SV: Obama

Holy shit! That was the best ep of WLTV ever … Pipes, Sasha,
    Mott … It’s Wine Party TV :~}

    The massive number of Q’soTD:

Winebrow: Yes, I frequently get a wine unibrow … And sometimes a bit
of wine on the tip of my nose because I get so excited about
    sniffy-sniffing.

Sasha’s age: Hrmmm, this is a tricky one, so I’ll dodge it by saying I
think he *looks* in his early 50s.

Shadow at work: Well, since this is a hypothetical anyhow, I’ll say my
grandfather (who is dead now). Why: He was a scientist (a botanist),
and I’ve long dreamt of seeing him in action doing research studying
    potatoes. Cheesy answer, but honest.

U.S. president: (By the way, GV, it’s not really a political question
like “Whom do you *want* to win the U.S. presidency?” would
    be … Just a hypothetical-bet question.) I’m not a gambling person,
but I’d lay odds that the Bush + Clinton dynasty will continue. -but-
At least W will be out.

    QOTD3: McCain

You didn’t get into too many details on the Osoyoos Larose but it is a joint venture with Ch. Giruad Larose. I tasted the 2004 recently and had similar

    GV,
What a great episode! I was laughing out loud most of the way through. Okay, before the massive qotd’s I have to give a shout out to Pipes. She’s an incredibly beautiful, charismatic, and down-to-earth person. If she’s ever in the need for conversation and wine-drinking when passing through central- Illinois, let me know!

Gary, more Vayniacs (and cheese) on wltv.

qotd Gary: your dad is at least 68.
qotd Pipes: a sherpa or sherpani at work in Nepal I’d like to be in awe of both what they can do, and breathe the rarified air.
    qotd Sasha: Obama

    QOTD’s:

    1) 63
    2) tagging along with Bob Parker on one of his tasting days would be pretty sweet
    3) It would be nice if Obama took it. Time will tell.

    Pipes is HAWT!

  133. February 7, 2008

    Keith Brown

Nice job Pipes. A little controlled chaos there at Wine Lib!

    QOTDS:

GV – Sascha (sp?) is 60
Pipes – I had to think about that one. I guess maybe an architect, because I’ve been considering that as a second career when I retire at age 50 (less than 6 years!!!)

Sascha – Unfortunately, I think it will be McCain. The lesser of all the evils that will be an option I’m sure, but still…that’s how we got Bush…

  134. February 7, 2008

    David Dadekian

    QOTD 1: 62 years old
    QOTD 2: a top chef (and I don’t mean a Top Chef)
    QOTD 3: Obama

I’ve had my three-day old daughter on my lap during this whole episode. She flinched slightly when Gary opened the show, but otherwise was here for the whole thing. It’s great!

Oh me oh myyy… talk about bringing the thunder! Sasha needs to make more regular appearances on the show! Since almost everybody in America got a QOTD today, I’m gonna stake mine: What toys do you think Gary’s dad has?

    QOTD1: 52
    QOTD2: A spy
    QOTD3: Bloomberg

P.S. Conan is about as funny as a corked wine.

One of the best shows yet! Hillarious!
QOTDs: 58… would have liked to shadow Steve Irwin… because his willingness to get up close to nature… President Obama?

  139. February 7, 2008

    Malphas

This episode proves the point that even with sub-par wine, the company you keep can make the worst wine tolerable. Big ups for that!

QotD no.1: I’ll have to venture a guess at 53, with a birthday coming up sooner rather than later.

QotD no.2: I’d shadow any member of the Blue Angels (U.S. Navy), Thunderbirds (U.S.A.F.), or the Red Arrows (Royal A.F.), just to see REAL jets up close and personal.

QotD no.3: The next President of the U.S. may as well be the Oak Monster, with the Butter Bandit as VP. I’m writing in my vote for Leafy McOAK for the 2K8 Election!

    Ted Striker

Greetings from a very dejected Pats fan in full on mourning.
Watching this episode as I type, almost too shocked and depressed to do so… but,
If it were anyone else I’d be happy for the Giants, they played a hell od game and beat on the Pats. They definately wanted it hardcore and played their asses off. Best game they’ve played all year and probably the worst game the Pats have played = Giants win.
Anyhow, Pipes is great! Rock on girl, awesome journey to be on. Great addition to the episode without a doubt. Big Fruity Pebbles fan!
I’ve basically been a lurker, only commenting a half dozen times so far. But I love it and the Thunder all the way. (oh! mention of politics! Geez, insult to injury today. First the Pats now Romney, ugh!) I do want to inquire with everyone about OTBN. A reporter came into our store and inquired about it. I’m researching it at the moment and kind of intriqued so far. We’re thinking of putting an email out to our clientele, along with a Thunder Show plug. So, Open That Bottle Night is an event started by the wine writers from the Wall St. Journal in 2000. It’s feb. 23rd this year. Apparently, it’s an evening to get together with folks or not, but ultimately open that bottle you’ve sitting on for a little too long or just rediscovered in the bottom of a collection or something. The one you’ve been saving for an occasion that never came, etc. Evaluate it and takl about it. Anyway, please leet me know or give your thoughts on this. Is anyone doing this or done with it? I kind of end up doing this all the time anyway, but sounds like a cool idea for any groups of people that get together for tastings. Huge rambling comment sorry, but would love some feedback in the comments.
    QOTD 1: 58
QOTD 2: Hef. The reasons are obvious.
QOTD 3: Apparently nobody that’s is serious about our greater economic situation and that isn’t going to spend us into oblivion or cares about our borders! Given the choices, I guess Obama for his hopefulness for our nation and inexperience wiith entrenched Washington BS, so long as he somehow became more fiscally conservative and serious about security and picked real deal peeps for his cabinet that know what needs to be done and let them do it.

QOTD#3- Obama with J. Edwards as Veep

    Saftig

QOTD: As for sweet Sasha (who reminds me so much of my darling departed Dad it’s scary) I’m guessing 53.
I’d like to work with our soldiers recovering at Walter Reed or Bethesda.
And although even a Muslim country had a woman as head of state, this crazy country still doesn’t think a woman could hang and the media and the right have attached far too many negatives to her (although when pressed they can’t come up with much that’s concrete-God forbid we have a smart, strident female who displays emotions on the odd occasion) so I would be quite happy with a President Obama, well spoken, intelligent and inspiring. After eight years of Mushmouth, we could stand to gain back some cred in the world.

  143. February 7, 2008

    Bob Sikorski

I can’t believe that your are the 21 1/2 most popular wine show on the internet. My advise – don’t believe what other people say. Your are No. 1. I challenge anyone to find a better show. Admit it, your are the best and everyone knows it.

WLTV Instant Classic. LOL’ed twice. loved when you appealed to Sasha “dad, don’t break my chops” and he gave you the dad look and Jen’s reaction to Sasha’s mention of his “toys” – priceless ‘net content.

The 400s have been bringing serious thunder! Thanks, everyone, for another great episode. This was so much fun to watch. Can’t even answer the QOTDs, I’m laughing so hard at the back-and-forth.

P.S. Gary, I think your dad would totally whup Conan. I’m just sayin. Better keep those two separated.

  148. February 7, 2008

    amgryger

Great episode. Sasha’s expression towards the end when he started looking at the toys was priceless.

QOTD: Sasha is 58? If I could go back in time, I would follow the late Russian film director, Andre Tarkovsky, on the set of “Stalker,” because I love film in general and IMO, he was the greatest director of the 20th century for his incredibly deep understanding of the possibility of capturing time, space, and image on celluloid film. I’m hoping for Obama with a really good cabinet.

  149. February 7, 2008

    Cephalopunk - Will Piper

What a coincidence, my last name is Piper, and the wine director at my last job decided to call me, Pipes.
    My first response QOTD answer:
    1) Late fifties, and we’ll leave it at that. Roguishly handsome, I must agree Jen. Does anyone know the episode numbers for Sasha’s previous appearances?
    2) I’ve done a lot of cooking, so it’s tempting to say one of the great or compelling cooks, like Ferran Adria – I would love to trail him. Someone like Selosse, Deiss, Zind-Humbreit or Joly, ie a great wine maker would be neat, but honestly, what is a day with Bjork like?
    3)Obama – he’s left-handed (look into it).

Awesome episode! As a new comer that is the first time I have ever met Gary’s father. Very cool.

    QOTD:
    1. I am guessing Gary’s father is 53, Gary was born when he was about 21.
    2. I would love to shadow Andrew Zimmern, from Bizarre Foods on Travel Channel. I can, and would eat pretty much anything so I think it would be fun.
    3. Though I am not a fan, I think we will all be looking at a minimum of four years with Pres. Clinton.

Wow…..what a totally great show. I can’t remember a show that has given me the deisre to travel in so long….I want to drive down to NJ myself just to pop some special wines with Sasha, Gary, and the Vayniacs. Ok, ok…on a serious note.
Gary QOTD: I’m guessing that Sasha is about my father’s age…54.
Sasha QOTD: I think that Clinton/Obama will be the next president/VP come the following year. I hope that whoever wins the primary that the other follows as the VP. I think it would be the “thunder ticket” for this election.
Piper QOTD: I would want to shadow Maynard James Keenan. He is a musician, wine maker, vineyard manager, and the sort of person that I personally think I could ask questions to all day and still feel like I barely scratched the surface.

A truely great show. Now for my question….Gary….! Does this mean if I contact you in advance and want to come down to visit…and share some wines with you & the vayniacs…that it is a viable option?

THIS IS MY FIRST POST EVER!!

I just got into wine like 2 months ago…Gary’s review of Riondo Prosecco led me here via Google!! I love the show. Instant addict. Thanks a ton.

BTW You have a wine I am dying to try, and since I have just realized that my dad lives like 45 minutes from the Wine Library (and he shops there a lot apparently!) He is probably gonna stop in a pick one up for me! I can’t find it anywhere in NC!

    On to the QOTD(s):

    1. Can’t be over 62
    2. Tough, but probably Wes Anderson….I know that sounds lame, but I make movies! Maybe if I could go back in time it would be Christian Dell.
    3. Obama. And Gary, Politics and drinking were meant for each other!!

Oh, and one more thing…if you’d like to know something that came to mind when I was watching the Vegetarian Episode:

Well, I don’t want to get too long winded. Send me an e-mail, I think it’s something relevant, interesting…and something a lot of people might not know!

Really enjoyed the show. Nice break from the heavy duty serious tasting. That was a lot of fun. The Canadian wine has me interested, I can’t wait to see the best wine of North America coming from someplace else than Cali, and I think they will.

    GV: I’d say he’s around 60

P: I hate to go with the crowd but I would absolutely love to shadow GV. I mean sure I could shadow the president, or a captain of industry but would they make you feel as at home or just “one of the crew” like GV would? Unlikely.

S: Barring any major gaff by the Democratic Party it will likely be whomever they put up. Though I am dreaming of a Bloomberg Independent run.

I’ll be looking for her on CONAN!
q#1 Gary’s dad appears to be around 72 to me.

q#2 Shadow Francis Ford Coppola – He’s got a lot going on and then there’s the wine who could ask for more!

q#3 Going with the statistic that Missouri (also with a rich wine heritage) has picked the President based on their Primary winner for every election since they missed with STEVENSON — I’d have to say OBAMA as much as it hurts this card carrying LIBERTARIAN to say!

  205. February 8, 2008

Fantastic show, Gary! I loved all the guests, and anytime that you can have Sasha on the show, it is great. Pipes…you rock! Enjoy your wine travels.

    QOTD:
    1. I would guess your dad to be 56.
    2. I would love to shadow Gary V. I am very interested in the wine industry from a sales standpoint, and would love to shadow Gary and see what he does all day.
    3. WE’RE ALL DOOMED!!!! All the leaders in this country and we have to pick between these clowns???? Bring me a candidate that can represent ALL people in some way, not 50% of the population.

    1) ! do not believe that the coolest guy ever necessarily has an age. sasha is timeless. and hilarious.

    2) I would shadow a ground hog so i could control the weather.

    3) As much as i want ron paul……i would say the winner would have to be the person with the most votes which should be Ron Paul if America has a chance.

this show got weird, and i liked it.

Holy crap #@^*(&^(* ……….. we pay $40 for the Osoyoos up here in Ontario.
Many decent red wines coming out of BC now ……. out of Niagara area there are also goods ones (whites as well as some reds ….. Pinot Noir, Cab Franc, etc.) . I find many of the styles tend to the old world more then new world.

    2. Jack Bauer, because he’s fictional and overqualified.
    3. Someone who’s underqualified (any of them would qualify for that description in my opinion).

great show GV! loved the interaction between the three of you…there’s a very special ingredient that Mr. V (not you GV, your dad) adds to the show when he’s on…sort of adds an approachable gravity to the show that makes you feel like this show is serious and not all fun and games…but fun nonetheless…(did that make any sense?) the selection of wines and subsequent reviews didn’t really add much to my wine knowledge, but enjoyable show nonetheless.

  212. February 8, 2008

    Moselman

WOW!! Can’t begin to imagine the shame if you’d stopped at 400, Gary. Great, great ep! What serendipitous casting! What fun! (Let the naysayers enjoy a straight Sir GV ep).

QOTD: Sasha’s age: Math was not my strength in school…

Shadow: Steve Jobs – so I could kick his butt every time he started to do something else detrimental to legacy Macintosh. Then I could go after Gates.

Prez: As a Cdn, not qualified to guess, esp. this early. But it is the potential VPs that really scare me.

Now for a bit more Canadian content re the Osoyoos Larose. First, correction on pronunciation of Osoyoos. Uh-soo-yuse. Believe it!

Further to another comment, this from BC wine critic John Schreiner: Osoyoos Larose is the Okanagan wine industry’s ultimate technology transfer, the result of a joint venture set up a decade ago between Vincor Canada and Bordeaux’s Groupe Taillan. The French company’s stable of distinguished properties include Château Gruaud Larose.

P.S. Glad to see I’m not alone in thinking Conan resembles a corked wine.

  215. February 8, 2008

    Jerry

What a hilarious episode! The power of the internet to bring together wine and entertainment from people who do the other as a day job… :-)

QOTD 1: I think Sasha mentioned it on his other appearance. Around 53?
QOTD 2: A politician, in general. If I shadowed someone I admire, I’d feel bad that I’m not in their shoes.
QOTD 3: If Obama is the Democrat’s candidate, he will win. If Clinton is the candidate, McCain will win.

  216. February 8, 2008

Classic episode. That was a lot of fun to watch…

Excellent to see an Okanagan wine make it on the show.

    Brady B.

    GARY—!!!

This is the best episode I’ve seen! At first I thought… sweet, a hot guest (sidebar, is Pipes taken?…. seriously?) Then I thought, awesome… now GV’s pops is on the show. How can this episode get any better? Then the banter about politics… priceless. Nothing against you GV, I love you man, but having your Dad on along with lovely attractive guests more often will do nothing but bring more thunder. As a CKC from Missouri I love the wine from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Its too bad that the best Missouri has to offer is horrible concord wine.

Q(s)otD: I’d say Sasha is older than he looks since clearly he looks great for his age. 62 is my guess.

I’d like to shadow any CEO of a fortune 500 company. The more I get promoted at the places I work, the more I see that higher management does less “work” minute for minute but has a MUCH higher level of responsibility and stress.

At the beginning, I supported Duncan Hunter, he dropped out so then was Thompson, then Giuliani, then Romney… now I guess the next conservative in line is Huckabee. Its too bad there isn’t a GV – SV ticket. Ultimately and unfortunately, Hilary will win after McCain gets the GOP nod and can’t rally the conservative base. I’ll need some good wine recommendations on election day.

Thanks for making a great episode (and my night),
    Brady B.

  218. February 8, 2008

    scott.t.

Incredible episode! The show was a meritage of cameo appearances. Definitely an instant classic.

    QOTD:
    1. Guessing Sasha is 62. Why? Because I like the #. He’s cool as sh*t.
2a. Gary V b/c who wouldn’t be able to say, “Welcome to Wine Library TV…I’m Gary VAAAAY-NER-CHUKKKK!” (Sadly, my palate isn’t very developed as his but I swear I tasted pleasant root beer and chocolate flavor in a Hope & Grace cabernet I had last night).
2b. Vivian so she can help me develop my palate. At her age I was fond of gumming my family’s cheap naugahyde sofa. She’s eons beyond me when I was her age. Katherine: you should start a “what is Vivian teething on” twitter/blog.
    3. Not terribly enamored with the apparent choices. Maybe Hillary?

    Cheers on another outstanding episode!

#3- A blithering idiot who neither knows or cares about “Average” Americans. It’s too bad that naturalized citizens or even (gasp) legal residents cannot be considered, your pop would prob make a cool pres!

Gary! Awesome show… So glad to see that you did a BC wine on the show today!! Osoyoos (pronounced Oh-so-yoss) Larose is a joint venture between a Canadian-owned owned company and the Bordeaux based Group Taillan (for anyone out there who cares). I’d still love to see you do a show on the Okanagan (the Valley where Osoyoos Larose comes from) sometime. But I digress…

Chateau ‘Oh’ Arc?… oh Gary Gary with your horrible reading and pronunciation of French. The wine is from Arkansas and the X in Aux is pronounced. It’s a play on words… but I’ll leave it at that.

What a raucous show. It was good to see Papa Vaynerchuk and my guess is that he is the same age as my old man, 65.

Awesome EP, for sure a classic. Totally cool to see a guest who brings wine on the show from her travels. I really enjoyed watching the dynamic with Sasha there. Great show, keep ‘em coming !

Also it was nice having a wine reviewed from here in BC so I could probably find it. Props to B.C.

P.S. I think this probably is an instant classic episode.

    That was a fun show!
Your pops is 59…I would put a dollar on that except I just spent all my money on 2005 Chateau Pavie shopping at The Wine Library…

    I would shadow Hugh Hefner…Duhhh

  239. February 8, 2008

Isn’t wine amazing? It brought Gary, Pipes and Sasha all together – fun, laughter, great conversation. I love wine.

Sasha, I believe, is 63 years old.

I would love to shadow an NBA ref for a day – I might finally learn why my Lakers get such shitty calls.

Obama will be our next president.

    MagnumGourmet

Great episode today. Good to throw in a tangent (or ten) every few weeks and break up the wine tasting.

    Sasha’s age – mid fifties?

Commissioner of the Washington Wine Association – be interesting to find out what it would take to do the job.

In the end I think that Obama pulls it out.

Good to know that the Osoyoos is still a bit young. Started picking them up since initial release (’01-03) and have been letting them age. Totally pissed that WL doesn’t ship to Washington, the Osoyoos Larose is $40 minimum at any shop in the area.

  243. February 8, 2008

    Big Mac

Amazing EP!!! As always, Sasha brings the thunder! Gary, he completes you! Mott even had the spotlight for a moment, what a show…

    1.) Age(s) – Sasha (62) Jennifer (29)

    2.) Steve Jobs!!! Apple FTW!

    3.) NO politics…but it doesn’t matter Indiana – Republican!

  244. February 8, 2008

    Bill Ward

To be honest, this was the most entertaining episode I’ve seen. Pops is absolutely terrific. What a down to earth guy and a class act. The reaction to pipes playing with the action figures was priceless!

Pipes was terrific. Definitely star potential.

Man, that was a great episode! I am all about some Sasha. I am going to predict that Sasha is 57 years young. I would love to follow a master Sommelier. Either way, bring Sasha and Pipes on more!!!

  249. February 8, 2008

    Nickyb85

What a wonderfully chaotic show it was today. Lots of love to you guys.
QOTD: 1. Sasha must be older than my father so i’ll put him at 64
    2. I would love to follow Kevin Rose for a day (he’s almost as bawla as Gary V.)
    3. Obama 08!

  250. February 8, 2008

QOTD: a winemaker with love for life and terroir – why? Why am I watching this show? ;) I love it!

Btw Gary: you should train Motts PAL. Install him in the passenger seat more often.

  254. February 8, 2008

    terry

Hya Gary thanks for the canadaian notice here.
i love Osoyoos, they are usually really tight on the tinnas but sometimes they fail to develop even after decanting for a long time.
however, i believe the BEST WINERY in BC is MISSION HILL. TRY IT. MISSION HILL chardnnay is great and then the Oculus, the boearduex blend of Mission hill, is by far one of the beest ever.

  255. February 8, 2008

    Sonicgg

    JEN! ROCKS!
I voted for her in that contest…She’s a Vayniac, fer shure…
What a great change of pace show. I was in Virginia last year and suprised at the massive number of wineries although we only could check out one- definitely decent but you are on point with the price issh.

Sorry Gary…….. Sasha stole the show again!

Of course we have a generation bond; we are in our 60’s.

Gary, you are on point with the Oklahoma wine; juice from California. (Why??)

Sasha is on point with the price structure of some American wines.

Also, extra points for you Gary; trying to focus on the mission! Wine Tasting!
However- you loose a few points for picking on Mott!!

CLASSIC!! That was the most fun episode of WLTV yet. Gotta love it when you have guests that can keep up with you Gary, especially when they’re easy on the eyes. Awesome job Pipes!

    QOTD #1: 62
QOTD #2: Gotta go with Rachel Ray. I’ve gotta know whether that energy level is real and if it is I want to see her keep it up for 10 hours myself.

OMG! What a freakin’ awesome episode! I laughed my ass off!! Jen is awesome!!!

QOTD: Sasha is not a day over 40!!
QOTD2 and 2a) a winemaker at crush time, just to see everything that goes on and get the hands on…
QOTD: Tough call…my vote is for Sasha right now, but since he wasn’t born here, maybe we should all write is Mott for President? Can we have that shirt? But seriously, my magic 8 ball says ask again later…

PS – I’m working in OK for a few weeks and will now be scouring the countryside for some OK juice!!

  266. February 8, 2008

    Great show ! Good atmosphere.

Gary, why don’t you open a forum area on this site ? I think it will bring a lot of interest from the vayniacs to exchange ideas and tasting notes.

    QOTD1: 60
    QOTD2: Warren Buffet
    QOTD3: McCain

  267. February 8, 2008

    Rice

QOTDs: He’s 59 but looks 25, Bill Clinton for a day, and I won’t mix politics with wine. ;-) But to respect Sasha’s Q… I have to say Hillary cuz statistically Obama is too young and too inexperienced. I wish I could say McCain but my middle name is a Democrat president.

Super obnoxiously awesome show… way outa the box… keep it fresh! It will be hard to top this episode.

  268. February 8, 2008

    JerseyGirl turned CNY vayniac

    QOTD:
Gary’s question: I want to say early 60’s, but i think he looks younger than that. I’m also pretty terrible at guessing people’s ages, so I’m sorry if I’m way off Sasha.

Piper’s question: oh man, there are too many answers for this question…
I would shadow either Gary V (the exercise running around after him would be good for me, let alone the crazy wine knowledge and entertainment)
OR one of the hosts of TOP GEAR (if anyone even knows the show I’m talking about – check out BBC America) cause they’re hilarious
OR Alton Brown cause he knows so damn much and I always watch his show in awe of all the knowledge he can drop in 30 min
OR the guy on Food Network that owns that crazy cake shop… it looks like they have so much fun!
OR Kat VonD, cause she just rocks!
OR my uncle Mike cause he’s a scuba diving instructor – FUN
I could go on, but I wont. I think I watch too much TV.

Sasha’s question: I’m thinking Obama might make it. But I know SQUAT about politics, so dont listen to me.

  269. February 8, 2008

    Chippewamike

Awesome show. More Vaniacs on the show please!

Sasha is 64. I would love to follow George W. Bush just to see what actually goes on in his meetings. Lastly, I think the next President of the United States will be Mr. Obama.

    Pipes was awesome too!

  270. February 8, 2008

    Tom G. of the CKC

Another great episode. I love trying wines from non-traditional US states (Texas, Pennsylvania, NJ, etc.) so this episode was great.

    QOTD(GV): 65 years old
QOTD (P): Warren Buffet. The guy makes billion dollar deals like he’s paying for a burger at McDonald’s. Who wouldn’t want to see what that’s like?
QOTD (S): Almost certainly John McCain.

  271. February 8, 2008

    Tom G. of the CKC

haha I can’t believe how many people said Warren Buffet! That’s what I get for not reading the posts before answering (and now I look like I am a huge bandwagon jumper-on-er).

Ok, to be more original: Andy Reid on draft day. I’d love to see how my team goes through the motions of picking their draft.

    Vanyniac steals the show…..UH… I mean seat…lol

That was funny watching you try to get back into your seat after Jen stole it but could not pull it off. But hey, you tried. As Jen said….she always wanted to sit there anyway…!!!

I see you were very uncomfortable but after 3 minutes of giving it your best shot you saw there was no chance and decided to take the guests chair. I like how you even pulled Mott into it as a decoy so that when you returned you might be able to do the switch & slide over then….but that didn’t happen either….lol

Should have entered from the right side. That would have worked. Too Funny…!!!!

Good show though. Love your Father. He’s the best. Nice Man!

    QOTD:

    1. Hugh Hefner……why….Hummmmm I wonder!!!

    2. Sasha has to be around 67…but of course he looks in his 50’s. But with the 8 kids comment and the fact you were 3 when he came here….I’m guessng older.

    3. I dred the thought of who will win…. unless of course you are a write in at the last minute Gary!

    Hey Gary!
A really fun, but kind of messy ep. Pipes is the Bomb Diggety! Totally Radool!
I have to say that you Dad completely stole the show. I tell you…his love for bread almost surpasses my own. Also, the look on his face when Pipes started playing with the dolls is classic.
    QotD 1 – 52
    QotD 2 – Obama
QotD 3 – IF I could shadow someone…I’d probably shadow a wine critique during a state fair tasting or something like that…You get to drink lots of wine for free….you’re only comparing a dozen or so wines….and you’re just ranking them….sounds like a pretty chill job to me.

  290. February 8, 2008

McCain for sure now. If your voting for HillBill or Obama your voting for higher taxes, so you won’t be able to buy more wine! Freaks me out anyway how anyone can vote for Hillary…that’s just plain scary.

I LOVED this show. Your father is great and you could totally tell that Pipes was an actress. She was so comfortable in front of the camera and she really did a great job. My friend Mel is going to be so jealous of her. You should definitely have more Vaniacs on.

    Now to my answers:
I would say that your Dad is 59.
    Hello….Robert Parker.

Great show. I’m a fan of Pipes now. I’m half way throuh her expensive wine tasting. Thanks, Jen.

Sasha looks to be pushin’ 70. I’m goin to say 67. I know people have been much lower that that. sorry Sasha, if I’m mistaken. I’m 37 and folks have thought I was 40 a long time ago.

I’d shadow…..hell I don’t know. I think I’ll say Gary V. I’d love to taste wine and collect wine knowledge and talk with people about wine. I’m sure I’d hate the business side though. I believe Jen, when she says you work like a dog!

  313. February 8, 2008

    Jessica

    QOTD: I guess Sasha is 60. Yes, I agree he’s damn good-looking.

I think whoever wins the Democratic primary will probably take the presidency. I’m betting Obama will win.

I would shadow…Gary – first class entertainment AND good wine! That’s a job I’d like.

  314. February 8, 2008

    rAmbler

Wow….struggled a bit with that show
I loved to see some BC action on the thunder show. That is a good sometimes great wine that needs some serious time in a decanter to release. South Okanagan Valley wines (Oliver) have this great cult following out here. The winemakers are doing some great things and the wines are really starting to carve out their own identity.

What a great show!!! Got a really good chuckle when Sasha dropped the “S” bomb. He’s a great addition to any show, because even when he doesn’t speak, his facial expressions bring the thunder to the show and a grin to my face.
Jen was great. She didn’t appear nervous and turned the show into a quality “hangin’” session. Some good friends and family sittin’ round, talkin’ ’bout wine. Good stuff.

QOTD 1: My SWAG (scientific wild-ass guess) is 63.
QOTD 2: Gary V. I’ve been to the store, and would really want to see the inner workings of combo retail/internet business of WL magnatude.
QOTD 3: I think that whoever gets the Democratic Party nod is going to Pennsylvania Ave.

Great show again, keep up the good work.

#2) Seth Rogen — he seems to have a lot of free time to hang out, which is way better than working.
#3) McCain (reasoning: he’s the likely Rep nominee, whereas we don’t know the Dem nominee, so he’s got twice as good a shot as Clinton or Obama)

Ok, I answered all QOTD, Gary can you answer one. You gots no love for the South, the true south…of America. What’s up, you review $10 wines and no Chile/Argentina. That’s were that idea came from, no one can beat them. Step it up to $20 and Napa doesn’t come close, for the same varietals. Even the sideway Pinot Noir. Also, they are all old world style. Those vines in Chile are older than the US.

Also, can you get out to the west please…SF/Napa. Come on now, this is the place to be in the U.S. as far as wine is concerned. You belong here. Make a trip out and us Vayniacs here will run to party with you!

Great show, Gary! I love how your father came on. very cool. BUT I did not like Jen Piper at ALL. Lots of overacting. I was seriously annoyed by her. I just wanted to yell, “Chill!”

QOTD: Ok, let’s do some math here. AJ just turned 21. And I remember on the show he was 12? yrs younger than you. So, that makes you 33. Assume your dad had you when he was 25?, then that makes him 58. :)

This is like with the Larry David show — with all of the guest directors…..I would have thought this was directed by Jim Jarmusch. Reminded me a little of mystery train and broken flowers……

Love the guest Vaniac idea. I am a vaniac….not as attractive as Pipes, but I might be a good guest. I won’t bring any sub 70 point wines either……

Loved the show. The wine from Canada is from the town of Osoyoos , say Oh Soy Yos a very cool place well not really. This area of Canada is actually a desert.I have done 3 ironmans in that area and the bike portion of the race goes right through Osoyoos and every time the temperature was around 45 degrees Celsius which is around 113 fahrenheit.Damn Hot.If you get a chance to go to the Okanogan Valley, GO.

    KennyMac

Great show! This is why I love WLTV. The unrehearsed, anything can happen, element of the show gives it a freshness that I really enjoy. And the learning about wine is good too.

Also very excited to see a Canadian wine in the mix, and from my home province of BC too!. gary, you nailed the Osoyoos (pronounced oh-sue-use) Larouse completely. It’s totally designed to be aged for ten years or more, or to otherwise undergo some serious decanting (Gary, why not try the wine again on Monday to see what happens).

QOTD: I’m going with 60 for Gary’s dad.

I forgot to answer the questions:
1-Gary’s Dad is ageless because of his charisma and great wisdom.
2-Pipes-I would like to shadow her everyday because she makes life happen-she goes wherever she wants to go-does whatever she wants to do-meets whoever she wants to meet-that’s quite a bit for a small town girl from Maine. She is my hero!! (and my daughter) Shows you can be or do whatever you have the spunk for.
3- Hilary Clinton. If she wins, I hope she can pull it off.

  364. February 8, 2008

    J Crazy

Your dad is 58, a good age but not a very good score for a wine. Actually it’s a pretty shitty (hey if your dad can say it I can too!) score for pretty much anything (first date, final exam, waist size, time you can please your lady/man for, I mean I’m wholly against the number 58 being used for anything other than age).

QOTD: I’d shadow the skipper of a major shipping company’s boat.
    QOTD: Barack bring the thunder.
QOTD: Mott’s awesome! Can’t wait to score some Link it up shwagness.
QOTD: One of the best, if not THE best episode ever: family, friends, wine and love. That’s what’s it’s all’s about’s.

  366. February 9, 2008

    J Crazy

Totally forgot to answer why I’d like to kick it with a skipper. Also forgot to put in the part that it would have to be a shipping company back in the early 1500’s cuz a) the word “skipper” is freakin bad ass, b) because ships are bad ass, c) the early 1500’s were bad ass.

1- Sacha – 55 (hallarious! Great authentic no BS man – reminds me of my father in law)

2- Good question Jen! Shadow for a day – any person in history, Albert Einstein (before he became famous) or Neil Armstrong on the day he walked on the moon. Person working today – Chief Justice John Roberts

    3- Hillary.

BTW Gary – just wanted to say that I am sooooo lucky that my family is exactly like yours. We are also from Eastern Europe originally so kiss a lot… so great .

  368. February 9, 2008

    Bernie Bearnaise

Jen’s videos are so hilarious that she obviously has a writer’s knack and should probably stop in NYC and talk to Sat Night Live even though I heard they are Republicans.

Sasha takes it like the Mensch (the real estate taxes)that he is but is always charming and takes enjoyment wherever there’s bread, birds, flowers, good wine and good company. He really doesn’t look a day over 59.

It would be fun to follow Allen Meadows (Burghound) around tasting from barrels of pinot noir without spitting and pouring the leftovers back in the barrel (because it’s so precious)The more I think about it having Pipes there to enjoy it with would be even more entertaining……

I think that the Democrats will win this election as the pendulum swings back. Hillary is all pantsuited up like a canary and ready to move back in the House. Who will join her on the ticket? Obama will break a few hearts when he concedes but he will eventually get his chance the next time around. I guess Bill will really be a lame duck as First Man. It would have been interesting to see Obama outwit Osama….

Also, you are sooo wrong i could handle way more than 37 minutes of the thundershow! It was awesome seeing your dad on the show! It was really cool! Wow GV, this may go down as my favorite episode yet. Sasha is the MAN. Pipes was fun and brought a new vibe to the show, i was diggin’ it.

    QOTD:

    1: 58
2: I’d love to see the day of a REALLY famous winemaker (like a Robert Mondavi or someone to that caliber).
3: WAYYY to early to call, but if I had to guess….it’d be McCain

  381. February 9, 2008

    GeneV

Obama is the man. Great show.

  382. February 9, 2008

    Characterlost

wow!!! pretty much BEST EPIDOSE EVER. i am just speechless

    QOTD:57
QOTD:It would be fun to shadow the director of a major movie, just neat to see all the behind the scenes stuff
QOTD: gotta go with Hill dog

  383. February 9, 2008

    Big Nick

This was a fun episode Gary. I must say that there were 40 things going on at once, but it was fun and nice to see some wines that have been “traveled”.

    QOTD: 1. 57 2. Beach Bum 3. J. McCain

I usually don’t talk politics, but I guess it is easy to just give a name.

  384. February 9, 2008

    Tommy Vernieri

    That was an awesome episode!

Gary, they stole your spotlight =) you got a little antsy about that.

    I’m guessing Sasha is 56.

For shadowing I considered a chef, a winemaker, but I think I’d have to go with someone in the financial industry. I’m interested to know what kind of information someone like a fund manager keeps track of every day.

  385. February 9, 2008

    Kathryn

Absolutely one of my favorite shows.

QOTD: Sasha is…….59? I like prime numbers!
QOTD: I would love to shadow someone who reviews health spas for a living. Travel, gourmet (healthy) food, physical therapies, etc; I just can’t think of a better job.
QOTD: At this point, I’m just so excited that Dubya is going to be a gone pecan that I will be happy just to have someone else in the White House.

  386. February 9, 2008

    JayZee

Awesome show!! Sasha and Pipes? And even Mott? Hard to beat that. Oh, yeah, and that Gary guy, too. Pipes, kudos to you and I hope the rest of your trip is fantastic as well. Enjoy!

    QOTD 1: 57
QOTD 2: I’d like to shadow a real winemaker/vineyard manager and just soak up the information on what it is like to make wine. I guess it would have to be after harvest so it would be an interesting day. :-)
QOTD 3: Obama – I like a challenge and I think it would be awesome for the country.

  387. February 9, 2008

    William Bedard

Wow…that was sooo one of the best episodes! Many other commenters nailed it but seriously, Pipes…you really have a fantastic way about you (aka, you are so hot!).

Gary, I really appreciate how cool you were with your show getting completely hijacked. I also appreciate your more “analytical” take on the wines contrasted with the more “working-person” views offered by many of your guests. Keep bringing them on, though! Guests are a great “seasoning” to the “meat-and-potatoes” that Gary brings each day.

    QOTD 1: Around 65
QOTD 2: Eh, the President’s job would probably make for an interesting day.
QOTD 3: Too close to call atm, but likely a Democrat.

To all the Vayniacs…have a great weekend!

  388. February 9, 2008

    Mike L

    phew…great episode!

    GQOTD: 60
SQOTD: Hillary will be the next prez….ugh
PQOTD: I would like to shadow Steve Jobs too, how cool would that be!

  389. February 9, 2008

    Social Project Brian

Great episode! Hey Pipes and Sasha, get a room! kidding of course.

QOTD: Who would I shadow for one day at work? The US President, doesn’t matter which one he is.

QOTD2: I think Sasha thought the same thing, which is why he asked who will be the next President. Answer: Probably Obama (hold onto your wallets!).

  390. February 9, 2008

    ceewats

the funniest episode i think i will ever see

  391. February 9, 2008

    Gary, Gary, Gary…..

Re-lax…. Your father is absolutely charming, and the reparte between the two of you (as well as the kisses) was simply enchanting. Oh, and Pipes was fun, too–a little injection of the not-so-expert, like the rest of us.

Who’s going to win the election? The Democratic ticket, either Obama or Clinton.

    Thanks for a wonderful episode.

  392. February 9, 2008

    Malarkey

QOTD: 65. By the way, will we find out for sure?

Good to see Pipes on the show. I was recently wondering where she has been lately. I think traveling to Wine Library is like a trip to Mecca…

Other QOTD: I don’t really know. If it were someone who has a job I want I’d just end up really jealous at the end of the day. One of the various Captains of Industry? I’m not interested in them.

  394. February 10, 2008

    Awesome show!

Great episode – enjoyed all the hijinx and unscripted-ness of it all. Funny to watch Sasha looking around at Pipes like what are you doing with these action figures.

    QOTD : 59 for age
QOTD : Pipes… I’d like to shadow Hugh Hefner for the day
QOTD: Prez – I’ll go with Clinton ?

I think your dad is 60?? I’d like to shadow Kate Spade because I think she has perfect taste and great sensability, and I think/hope Obama will be the next president.

Your dad is a cooool cat. I would say he is 60. President?? I am guessing Hillary. Loved the show!

Started out a little scary for me… I was thinkin, “Oh yeah, she’s totally love-knife material.” But – yes it got superdope. I tried a stalker tactic myself and tried an online public records search to find SV’s birthdate. I failed. I did find his middle name though – and I’m not tellin (L!). I’m guessing a youthful-looking 63.

    QOTD – Young…60?
    - probably like some eccentric Biodynamic traditionalist French winemaker, like Joly or Chapoutier or someone cool like that. Just to see how they do it on that side of the pond.
-Obama will represent Chi-town in DC. If not, it best be a Dem.

WOW!!! Lots of comments :) So glad [most of] you liked this show. It was very gracious of Gary to let me on — he really is a busy busy guy with a lot on his plate, though I am glad he keeps doing the show, I don’t know HOW he keeps doing the show! It felt like a wine party that someone happened to be filming. Gary, Sacha, and Mott are all fantastic and it was a day I will never forget. Sorry the wines I brought weren’t great, but I at least thought they’d be interesting. And don’t you hate it when Gary tastes really phenomenal wines and you are stuck sitting at home, wondering where you can get some or worse when you can afford to get some? I saved you that agony :) Hahahaha! I know it wasn’t a very educational ep. for you all.. but thanks for putting up with it!
    WLTV RULES!

  408. February 11, 2008

    QOTD 1: Sacha is a great 62.

QOTD 2: Jennifer Lopez… we´d do a music video in the morning, design something after lunch time, and go out dancing (In Living Color style) after a swanky Latin dinner.

QOTD 3: Let it be a dem and I´ll be ok.

  409. February 11, 2008

QotD 1: I was going to say 59, so I’ll stick with that.

    Gary,

Thanks for reviewing a wine from Oklahoma! I use some of your clips in our Viticulture and Enology program at Redlands Community College in El Reno, OK.

I couldn’t agree with you more, that Grape Ranch using California wine and bottling it in Oklahoma doesn’t show Oklahoma terrior.

I’m the president of the Oklahoma Grape Growers and Wine Makers Association and we’d love to send you some wine from some of our 50+ wineries so that you could review what we believe is an up and coming location for the grape and wine industry.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

  411. February 11, 2008

Perhaps my favorite show ever (even more than the greats like 184).
Sasha I’m guessing to be 63, and I’d love to follow Barack Obama around for a day once he’s in office.

All I have to say is that chick, Pipes, is ANNOYING. I don’t want to be too negative…I always like the show and enjoy the few guests that do come on.

OMG, this was a greeeaaatttttt episode! This has the makings of a WLTV classic. I was cracking up so much here at work that I think I scared some of my co-workers. Love it!!!

I’m leaning toward preferring those shows that focus on wine, and less like an episode of a TV talk show.

  415. February 11, 2008

    The Chinonator

I am a little creeped out by this young woman’s affection for all things Gary and her slightly too intense effort to join in. Oh well, she’s an attractive fan so why not have her on the show. Gary you shun her like your usual, “I’m on my own”

  416. February 11, 2008

    Patrick Tippy

    Gary,
This episode is a shit show. Awesome. It is great to get other people’s perspective on the wines. I also like seeing people’s perspectives on the wines from non-traditional wine making regions of the country. Oh, this is my first comment. I’m not longer a lurker.

  417. February 11, 2008

    Greg Stutman

Obama!!!! WE need to start thinking green!!!! Anyone who who doesn’t believe that we are at a crossroads, is most likely uneducated. Think of your grandchildrens future!!!!! OIL WILL RUN OUT!!!!! We don’t want them drilling in the Arctic National Preserve. We need to change , not the environment!!!! We are what’s wrong, so let’s make it right!! If we keep up the rate we are at, our greatest wine regions will change, for a fact. Please consider doing something positive!!!! LIVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!!

Great episode. How much wine do you give people before they come on? Am jelous of the trip that Pipes is on, how much fun.

The Osoyoos Larose is on our wine list and we were the first to list Canadian reds in our area, along with Mission Hill. Love the wine (even if it is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too young to drink now) and Gruard Larose is a favorite of mine (the 1990 is a must try if you can find it a decent price now).
The Vincor/Groupe Taillan link up has great potential.

QOTD 1: Dont know but being Gary’s Dad is sending him grey

Wow. What a friken show!. I skipped over and glad I went back to see this one. Definitely Pipes was the draw here. Great seeing Sasha again along with Mottster. Hey Mott, you need to practice the swirls man.

QOTD: Who would I shadow, that would be you Pipes. You’re so hot! Nice job on the show. Clearly comfortable infront of the camera and very easy on the eye. Thanks.

Sasha, early to mod 60’s. And I’m thinking it wont be Hilary. Although Id like to see Bill around Washington some more.

Finally! You made me leave a comment GV! Thanks for tasting a great wine from a great up and coming region in Canada. I’m sure someone already mentioned it but its pronounced oh-soy-yoos. I was in the region last summer and it was unbelievable not only for the wines, but the scenery as well. Anyways, taste many more Canadian wines in the future please…

#1: Pipes, yes I’ve gotten the wine unibrow after a bit of tasting.

    QOTD 1: Sasha is…61?

QOTD 2: My executive chef, Nano Crespo, because I admire his work (our menu) so much, and his affinity for pairing flavors on the plate the way I try to pair his food with the wines on our list, and because he’s just a damn RADOOL guy.

QOTD 3: As I did on Super Tuesday, I’m ready to BARACK the vote again in November, and he WILL be our next Pres.

Thanks for the marathon episode. Nice to see people on who have been watching as long as I have…since episode 25 or so. Interesting that the wine tasted better at the winery than when it tasted away. I have done that many times and had the same yech, what was I thinking response.
Your dad looks to be only a little older than me, maybe mid-60’s.
I’ve been an Obama fan for over two years since the last Democratic convention so I would like to see him win.

  440. February 14, 2008

Been mad busy so I’m playing episode catch-up. I loved your dad! More specifically, I loved how you and your dad interact. I too am all about the family and it was heartwarming to watch! And your dad is quite charming :-)

Pipes – loved ya chica. You were a fabu sidekick. Great chemistry with all 3 of you (oh and Mott, cannot forget the Mottster!) Like Pipes, I will def be making a trip to the Winelib! Not as far to travel since I’m in Howard Beach, but it’ll feel like forever once I get on the BeltParway (ugh! I hate that piece of “road”).

    QOTD 1: 62ish?
QOTD 2: I’d love to say something really profound here, but why lie? I’d love to shadow perezhilton. I know! I should be ashamed, but seriously,

This episode has really turned me into a fan of the show.
I love it how you (Gary), your dad and Jen gets along on the show.

    Now to the QOTD’s:
    1) 60
    2) My boss, because I like his personality and his way of doing business and handling people.
    3) As I’m a Swedish citizen I haven’t really followed the pre-election stuff and I haven’t really formed an opinion.

Thanks Gary for a great show, keep up the good work!
With extraordinary episodes like this one, you are surely one of a kind.

The 2003 Osoyoos Larose Grand Vin is far from the best BC has to offer. The wine industry in BC is stunning! It used to be that only the hot Niagara region in Ontario was able to produce grapes, but in the last two decades BC has proven itself to produce much better wine. I’d say that the Pacific Northwest in general makes some really excellent wines, but both BC and Washington wines are rather pricey these days. Worth it, I suppose. Best BC wine I tried recently was the (now sold out from the winery) 2003? Merlot from LotusLand Winery in Vancouver—cost $25 CAD, but tasted like it should be hundreds more.

QOTD 2a – Because I would want to be around someone who gave more to the world than they ever received.

so you guys talked about wineries using other fruits ( not their own) common practice within the industry. Qustion: why didyou choose an american labled wine fromtheir selections instead of a AVA designated label?

I just saw this episode for the first time today. Absolutely CLASSIC. Your pops is wonderful and pipes, what can I say, amazing. In answer to her QOTD: I would like to shadow her for a day or perhaps just ride along on her wine sojurn for a day. I must check out her blog now. Classic.

Easily one of the best episodes of all times. Sasha is made from 50% charisma and 50% awesome, and easily one of the best guests ever. Sasha/Pipes 08.

This was indeed a fun episode. If I am not mistaken, Osoyoos (pronounced roughly like oh-soy-yus) Larose is co-owned by the Canadian firm Vincorp and by Chateau Gruaud-Larose. I was pleased with the favourable review as it my personal favourite among the wines of the British Columbia Okanagan region. When enjoyed at a local restaurant, its bouquet was noticeable, eventually, several tables away.

I will not attempt to guess Gary’s Dad’s age, but he was in excellent spirits.

    qotd 1 : 55ish

qotd 2 : Pyper was living the dream…

qotd 3 : too late we already know. luckily sanity prevailed.

found this episode by searching “Canada” – you are still really thin on Canadian themed episodes and especially Niagara stuff other than the dessert wines. Please find some time and feature Niagara a bit more this year, come and visit too!

Favorite episode all time. Period. I cant count how many times I laughed out loud. Your dad is PRICELESS!! I demand that he come on more often. Now im not saying I dont love what you bring. I do. A lot. But they way you and your dad interact just gets me rolling on the floor. I love it. QOTD1: 55. QOTD2: My lazy front of the house manager. I KNOW shes lazy, but Id love to see to what extent over 8 hours. QOTD3: Well we know the answer, and I was rooting for him the whole time.

Absolutely epic. Now my favorite episode of all time. Saw this episode referenced in today’s ep (627) and had to see for myself. There is so much greatness in this episode. I can’t get over it. Pipes is now my favorite guest you’ve ever had and the rapport between you and your dad is blueprint for how all father-son relationships ought to be. I will watch this episode with my dad tomorrow.

    Wow, just wow.

That episode was incredible, I’m a new Vayniac, and I’m working my way backwards from the newest episodes towards Ep. #1.

So far, this is my favorite episode by far. First of all, Jen was the best guest I’ve seen thus far, exhibiting all sorts of Vayniac and Wine knowledge, and guest hosting very well along side Gary.

Not to mention Sasha joining the episode half way through and totally rocking my socks off, we even got a spot of Mott in there, what an all star cast for episode #403!

I know this is pretty late to be commenting on an episode from well over a year ago, but get used to it fools! I’m working my way back from late March 2009 and not making any excuses!

    THREE Q’sOTD:
#1. I’m gonna guess that Pops is 60 years old on the spot.
#2. I’d like to shadow my brother Caleb at work for one day, he works on an upcoming website called scrapblog.com
#3. I (thought at the time that Obama was going to win) now know that Obama won the presidential election of 2008.

Pipes Rocks! I want to join her on a wine tour of the world.
Sasha maybe as old as 65 but he always steals the show. This time Pypes stole it.

    QOTD 1: 56 turning 57
QOTD 2: If I could travel back in time I would spend a day with Kadinsky, one of my all time favorite artists. Perhaps we’d drink some wine from the early 1900’s at the end of the day :P

    - Can’t answer the 3rd Q as Obama has already been elected prez.

PS:If you haven’t had the chance to go to the Guggenheim in NYC, you should, they have remarkable exhibits there.

An awesome episode. The kind of show that was so wonderfully social that it made me feel like I was watching a family hang out after a turkey dinner!

QOTD: 57? I think shadowing the UN Secretary General would be massively intruiging.

Great episode guys. I have just sent texts to some new vayniacs saying they have to watch this one. Thanks for giving the wine from Canada a good review. I have not been to that vineyard yet but I guess its just moved up on my list.

    2 – Steven Hawkins
