#17 is a cool number (Plaxico Buress)!
I’m really glad you’re tasting more wines from the Languedoc region. I like the wines from there. I read in a book that Languedoc means “Language of Yes”. Great episode.

Thanks for the birthday shoutout Gary! My grandmother (Bernice) and I stopped by the Wine Library today and I got her that bottle of Sancere you recommended to me.

As soon as we left the store she began calling up all her friends in the area telling them about this new place she’d been to. Definitely spreading the thunder by Granma Latuchie!

Thanks again – brough a smile to all of our faces!

QOTD: more snow clouds and wine drinking. As if we need any more snow in the Midwest. Stay home, drink wine.

Also, Gary that was the best analogy ever, you deserve to gloat about that one.

TTTTTThis weekend? Good question. I’m running out to buy a 2004 Leon Barral Faugers if I can find one locally. Gardening, too. Maybe make a dinner for the two of us.

Nice show yesterday. I tried my first Languedocs and Faugeres wines over twelve years ago when I decided it was time to stop paying thirty plus bones for Cali Cabs and Pinots. Over the years they have occasionally been hard to find but I have been enjoying them for years – YES, back when they were almost all under nine dollars!!!

Always nice to see the couch.

Q1: actually yes, since I started digging up wine on the Internets it went something like Languedoc->Southwest->Loire->Rhone->Bordeaux.

Also, wouldn’t the Tooch family have to have “done their thing” in April? Unless this family you speak of are dogs or something, I believe it is 9 months, not 3.

Got my OZ Clark essential wine book and I’m whipping through to the Languedoc region and now I know where it is, and all about it. And, yes, Barral is listed as one of the region’s best. I learn so much from you GVNC!

QOTD: Here in Washington, we have a caucus tomorrow. All the WA Vayniaks are turning out for that, I know it. Otherwise, it’s Friday night wine club with my buds here on Bainbridge Island. Just like every Friday. Sunday…who knows…

QOTD: I’m gonna be going to two tastings and right now I’m gonna get my damn burg thread going so that there can be some burg love on the forum. we need more burg fans. which leads me to asking gary, when are you finally going to do a proper burgundy episode. Not bourgones, but proper burgundies like good village wines or 1er crus

Never had a fougeres. Sounds like a sucker punch of a wine. Perfect for the Strawberry Shortcake spitbucket.
Only if you tried to be the boss of me would I ever hate on you, and that would never happen.
QOTD: Italian film festival and food and wine tasting this Sunday. Possibly a wine tasting at Jubilation a local wine store on Saturday, but I still can’t actually taste much – I’m on antibiotics now but I don’t know if that will help or hinder the taste buds.

QOTD2: Going for a walk in snowy mountain woods Sat AM, them Mom’s visiting late Sst PM. (I’m trying to ween her off Yellow Tail.)

GARY, you should seriously consider making this idea of tasting two “sibling” wines a regular or semi-regular feature of Laid-Back Fridays. It’s very educational, I think.

QOTD: This weekend… It’s in the 60’s/70’s here in vegas this weekend, and I will be putting down some serious miles on my bike (road bicycle). Hopefully i can get 120+ in, that would be spectacular.

no gary, i have never had a wine from this region… and YES I will be trying it soon!

side note: I absolutely LOVE the little snippets of sound and images that are being cut into the the last round of shows. adds a dynamic component to the show.

    Gary,

Thanks so much for the “massive shout-out” to the Latuchie family. But you know, it takes 9 months to have babies, so we “are active” in May, not November, and the babies are born in February.

    Love your show.

QOTD – Going out to dinner tonight, skiing in the Black Hills on Sunday

  45. February 8, 2008

    Wine Not?

OK, I was scrunching my brow at that whole “do your business” on Thanksgiving, have a baby in February thing, but I see my fellow Vayniacs have already clued you in on that one! :)

Yet another cool wine region to try….thanks! I’m going to need a vacation just to try all of the new wines I learn about on your show!

QOTD: This is awesome! A good friend of mine turned 30 on Thursday and she wanted to celebrate with a wine party at my house tomorrow night, so that is what’s up! If you only lived in Michigan, Gary, you’d so be on the invite list! I can guarantee you’ll be talked about though! On Sunday my wine group is meeting to check out some wines from Portugal….that would make a good theme for a show, no?

Better late than never to the show. Thank you for the Laid Back Friday and bringing us a wine that 99% of us have never tried which answers the first QOTD: no I have not tried a Faugeres.

2nd QOTD: Core Conditioning, appt with my financial adviser to help stop the bleeding and then to buy some white wines since I have none in the cellar! Of course, waiting on a shipment from WLTV but I need some weekend quaffing material.

    Gary,

Enjoyed the 2004 Leon Barral Faugeres episode. Only you could throw around assessments like “white asparagus”, “cellar dust”, and “sardine juice” authoritatively and, because of your knowledge and willingness to try different tastes and textures, we can accept your comments. We are going to hunt for this bottle THIS weekend. Looking forward to future episodes.

QotD 1: No I haven’t and yes I am very interested – both wines are priced reasonably enough that I would like to taste while watching this show.

QOTD: Training for the Napa Marathon. This is the toughest weekend in the training schedule: I’ll be running 20 miles tomorrow. I think it’s pretty likely I’m going to sip some wine afterwards. I certainly will after the marathon itself, on March 2nd. The world’s best champagne, without question, is post-marathon champagne; nothing else compares with it at any price-point.

I actually had one of these maybe….. 20-25 years ago. I remember it (with notes) as you described it except for a dose of road tar in the oldie. It was about 10 years old, I think. Jadis or not?!?! I don’t remember. Great show!!!

QOTD: Homework: tasting the ‘04,’05,’06 Domaine La Garrigue to decide if more of the ‘06 is a good thing. And boning up on calculus (Yikes!)

QOTD: I’ve never even seen anything from Faugeres.

What’s up this weekend? I’m going to try to get some work done this weekend. I also went to a new wine shop that was having a tasting–I was not impressed. They seemed to just pick a bunch of wines that they thought would sell for Valentine’s Day, not stuff that they actually thought was good. I also recognized a lot of the wines they had, which was a first. I’m paying more attention to wines that I see in stores and so many people all carry the same thing. Luckily I have the WL just a FexEx package away.

Before answering the question of the day I wanted to give you a huge shout out Gary. Tonight, my friend Cameron and I went out to a wine bar to taste some wines with cheese. The experience was incredible. Through watching your video blog I have really started to pick up some subtleties in wine that I have not noticed before, and in combination with the cheese, the experience was one I will not forget for a very long time. We struggled long and hard trying to discern the texture, the differences between each of the wines we tasted. And I must admit it was challenging, but thoroughly entertaining. Through your show you have sparked a passion under my skin for wine, and I just wanted to give you a huge thanks.

QOTD:I haven’t had a Faugeres, but look forward to trying it.

  168. February 9, 2008

    JayZee

Great show and, no, I have never had a Faugeres – yet. ;-)

QOTD: This weekend my wife and I are just chillin out. We were going to go to a hockey game to see a friend of ours play in his All-Star game, but he got sick and cancelled on us. Bummer. Tomorrow I will be printing out labels to update my wine cellar contents. 1000+ labels will take most of the day. BTW, tonight I grilled some nice BBQ baby back ribs and they came out great. We paired that with the 2003 Ridge Independence School Zinfandel. Nice!

  169. February 9, 2008

    Donna Marie

Liked the wardrobe change for another multiple show taping–missed a button. Martin bobblehead covered it up. Don’t recall having a Faugeres. Definitely will buy a bottle of each and try side by side.
QOTD: Might make a trip to Wine Library on Sunday–always an event, and will attempt to spend under $200. It’s gonna be tough. So much wine, such a small budget. Have fun in Boston–wish I was there.

I have tasted most of the wines from Domaine Leon Barral (made by Didier Barral).
If any of you wine lovers get the chance to try Barrals white wine (Domaine Leon Barral Blanc, Vin de Pays de l’Herault) don’t hesitate. Buy it. It’s remarkable – and very strange.
Actually, I have never tasted anything like it. It has a profile of a Californien Chardonney whith at hint of Fino Sherry added a little Calvado.

I blog about wine – but unfortunately for most of you – i danish. Never the less, it’s to be found at: http://www.dotdkay.dk/?p=285

Loving the continuing shows. I’d have to say the best thing about WLTV thus far is that it has got me actively seeking out wines that i’ve never tried before weather it be region, varietal or just something unusual of the two. Episodes like this make me very jealous of people who can purchase from WLTV, so much effort to hunt things down.

  175. February 10, 2008

    Andre

Nice episode Gary! I really like when you compare wines that have some common thread, be it vintage, region, varietal, etc.

    QOTD: Chillin’!

  176. February 10, 2008

Got a bottle of 01 Abbaye St Plana Faugeres ‘La Closeraie’ chillin’ in the cave, any thoughts? Ready to pop?

never had – nor heard of – Faugeres. Very interesting, will have to find one in the local market. I’m new to French wines but want to explore some of the non-Bourdeaux regions during 2008.

QOTD: Lots going on but had a great dinner at my brother’s house last night. We opened a bottle of Melville Pinot, Frank Cab and Beringer Nightingale. The Melville won, hands down. Yum!

  179. February 10, 2008

    Thorsten Heidt

    Gary,

great choice, Faugeres is a very underestimated appelation in France. I spent 4 weeks last year in that region and had about 40 different wines from the top producers:

Great PQR, a lot of nice Rose and White wines and stunning quality starting at the cave cooperative up to top producers like Barral.

keep on going bringing the thunder to the people.

    best from Germany

Ok, so this doesn’t actually relate to the laid back friday episode (which I did watch BTW) but I introduced myself to you at the Boston Wine Expo on Saturday. Gotta say you were the non-liquid highlight of my visit. Very cool and EXACTLY the same energy and passion that comes through on the Thunder Show each day! Very inspiring to a newbie like me. You asked me to report back on my favorite wines of the show so I’m going to take that as my personal QOTD. Here are my top choices (although I needed at least another day to do a decent taste-through of the show):

Michel Picard – 05 Cote de Rhone (I was told it was about 13 bones which would make it a steal) and the Chateauneuf du Pape.

Also loved the Les Domaines Paul Mas from Languedoq. Never had the reds from that area and was pretty psyched about them.

Keep up the good work. Big props to Mott!

    Scott

PS – I’m lovin’ the wrist band from the schwag bag!

    Ted Striker

What up… just now coming to grips with my Pats performance. Very excited, though, the fiance (a chardonnay devotee) asked me to bring home some syrah to try out. We decanted and are enjoying a nice big smokey south african shiraz at the moment. The Hammer, it’s quite tastey! Tomorrow a little Santa Barbera syrah, and next an australian shiraz. Having a cool little two person, three night comparison tasting at home. Anybody familiar with OTBN? (Open That Bottle Night) Have actually been lovin me some Faugeres Jadis ‘03 over the last year, throwin some serious sweaty gym socks notes. And, just recently, had a great dry Ostertag Muscat and ‘96 Duhart Milon that was ddrinking wonderfully.
Hope you dig your time in Beantown!

  187. February 11, 2008

    Scott

Good show. I’d like to see more of “regular vs reserve” shows!
QOTD: Just got home from nearly a week at a conference and so I’m going to play with my baby girl until she’s passed out then get caught up on some WLTV and spread the thunder!

  188. February 11, 2008

QOTD: if your soul were a blend, would it be Rhone, Bordeaux, some other super blend? I’ll answer first! My soul would have 8% Petit Verdot, 19% Roussanne, 15% Mourvedre, 24% Syrah, 4% Tannat, 17% Grenache, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Tempranillo, 11% Nebbiolo, 7% Sangiovese and 14% Petit Verdot, with the rest being roughly 21% Reisling and 9% Albarino, also a splasheroo of 6% botrytised Semillon, some dark dank black Petit Syrah and a little dribble of Counoise, some excellent sexual Sangiovese (6%) and a bit of Marsanne, with a slippery infusion of Pinot Noir! Oh, such a beautiful soul, worth years and mountains, so delicious… Jesus Christ what a tastiness! What would your soul blend be?

My soul would be equal parts motor oil, pulverised butterfly wings, baby tears and Chardonnay! It will be a wonderful soul, tannic and ageworthy, also a bit thought provoking and melt in your mouth super!

funny, Gary, how your read my mind… as soon as I opened this episode, I thought : “quoi? un Faugères…un autre vin français!” immediately followed by “our producers should start paying STRONG attention to what this guy is doing out there”. last year, I even called a few producers in Chinon, Languedoc and S.West so that they could know the good news about their wines! Yes, you’re right : despite still an ocean of mediocrité, they are a LOT of good and DIFFERENT wines and producers in our Hexagon –who follow the same lines as yours, and would be happy to know they’ve got a strong herald in Opportunity Land. I, myself, am a fan of Saint-Chinian (Navarre, Canet-Valette), not only because of the vignerons, but also because the land is magic…
    Salut

    Gary,

I’m so glad the Barrals showed nicely. They are one of the favorite wines of Andrew the owner of Wine Watch, the best wine store in Fort Lauderdale where we get together every weekend. I haven’t tried the 2004, but the 2003 where pretty solid. Amazing aromas and complexity, and a freshness that was so unexpected given the vintage. I look forward to trying the 2004 now!

QOTD. The weekend was solid. Walks on the beach, wine tastings, Opera on Sunday and finished with an awesome dinner at Café Maxx. I brought some 1997 Dehlinger Pinot from the Octagon vineyard. That was pure heaven!

    Take care!

Hey Gary. This past weekend, I went to the Lodi Wine and Chocolate weekend. It was a weekend of driving to every winery in Lodi tasting and eating. (I had a DD, don’t worry.) I went to 30 out of the 37 participating wineries. It was awesome. I met alot of cool peeps, seen a few good bands. I must of tasted 100 plus wines. I didn’t like them all but I did like a lot. Abundance Vineyards rules!!!

Gary- You were also right about the 2005 Bordeaux market. These prices are not that high. Now if I can just go to Bordeaux…………. :)

Gary- My nephew, Mark still insists on wearing the original Vayniac wristbands at least 2 times a week. He always says ” Gary sent these, in the mail” over and over !! Never thought he would take to them these well………… :)

Enjoyed the show — liked the comparison of the regular to the reserve, and I’ve never had a Faugeres, so this is something new to look for (or order :-) ).

QOTD: Went to two wine club get-togethers — Saturday night pairing different types of wines with sweets & cheeses, and Sunday night a port tasting. And went to my usual hip-hop cardio class on Saturday morning :-) .

And a note: Babies born in February were not being conceived in November!

Gary, liked the vacuum cleaner in the background! First thought it was here but it was not. QOTD: Checking wine, testing wine, spreading the thunder.

I have had a Faugeres. In fact I’ve had these same 2 wines, both the 2003 and 2004. Comes from living in Berkeley where Kermit Lynch is located and has his retail store. I agreed with G, I liked the regular Faugeres better as well, but this is good stuff. Make some lamb shanks and drink it.

Last weekend was all Italian Greyhounds. I drove my foster Italian Greyhound to the open house so he could be seen by potential adoptees, the Saturday night was an Italian Greyhound wine tasting fundraiser at Jack’s in Albany, NY, where I had a glass of great Canadian Riesling.

I’ve never tried a Faugeres, but it sounded like a wine I would like. QOTD: Last weekend, we went wine tasting at several local Washington wineries (Brian Carter, Red Sky and a new one, Efeste) with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, spreading The Thunder all the way. Finished at a local Italian restaurant with a bottle of inexpensive but tasty Montepulciano. On Sunday, we had a family birthday party and drank more good local wine. Gary–you’re right, it’s all about family.

Faugeres is on the list of wines that most non-warehouse wine stores maybe carry one label of, and it’s overpriced, so no, I haven’t tried it.

I cold smoked some salmon and then broiled it with ancho rub. Then I got fired from my job!

I really enjoyed this episode with its emphasis on Faugeres. I think you should also consider other AOC’s in the area e.g. Fitou, St Chinian, Corbieres, etc. Or perhaps an episode on the many neraby Muscats, e.g. Rivesaltes, Frontignan or for the absolute best: St Jean de Minervois. Or maybe the cremants/blanquettes in the neighborhood.

BTW, if France crowns you King for your adulation of its wines, can I be Lord of Languedoc?

    Nope, no Faugeres here.

QOTD – Weekend gone, had to put the car in for a service, can think of better ways to spend $500. Got a great deal on a 2005 FMC (Forrester Meinart Chenin), only $24. Also picked up my first Mexican wine (and my first Petit Sirah).

I am a big fan of Southern France wines. I opened a Vacqueyras last night to have with some aged Gouda.

stumbled on this episode (again!) after googling “Léon Barral Faugères.”
The 2006 is clearing out and great deals are out there. Based on this tasting, I’m down for some.

When are you guys going to get some more in? I’ll bet the 07s are quite good.
