I just shot an email to my cousin Kelly that I haven’t talked to in about two years to tell her that I miss her and love her. I’ve been meaning to do that for a while now and, for whatever inexcusable reason, I hadn’t.

QOTD: I recently tried Scheurebe for the first time a few weeks ago. For the price ($9) it was pretty decent. Super apricots and peaches with nice acidity. I’ve yet to try Albariño and Chenin Blanc!

Celebrated one of my niece’s 2nd birthday yesterday… she was born about 3 months early, and it is amazing to see her doing so well now! It was also great to hang out with the rest of my family…

  44. February 11, 2008

    David

Please don’t say that about Riesling! I am enjoying the extremely high quality to price ratio. I don’t want it to take the same path as Pinot Noir, which is now way too high priced. Riesling was supposed to be our little secret. ;-)

The nose on the the Ash Hollow is more like canned Nestea with Lemon….I love it myself……we have LOTS of good Gewurztraminer here in the WA….Columbia Winery makes one for under $10 that is great!

My white wine NEW fave is,,,,,Quady Electra…..my old faves are any well made Muscato D’Asti!

I called my sister earlier today…and on GV’s recommendation…I called my Mother and Father(just because)….You are right bro…Family is Boss!

  46. February 11, 2008

    Mr.Ambassador

    Hey GV,

I’ve been an Ash Hollow fan since I originally tasted the 2002 Walla Walla Valley Estate Blend and had to run out and purchase a case! Thanks for bringing out their Gewurtzraminer but please fix the link to reflect that this is a Washington (Columbia Valley) wine and not from Oregon!

I’ve been experiencing a renewed appreciation for white wines recently and have found myself quaffing more whites than reds (for the first time I can remember). Recently I’ve ben enjoying a couple of Oregon whites: 2005 Foris Rogue Valley “Fly Over White” (blend of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris) and the Sokol Blosser “Evolution” (blend of many white varietals). I’m favoring the “food wines” with a nice, crisp finish.

I’m waiting to make lunch for the folks today and I’ll be certain to provide a GV inspired “Hallmark moment.”

    Thanks again

QOTD: I have never really liked Chard, but I am trying to try more offerings from around the world and re-visiting Napa to see if I can find any that bring the thunder. However, Riesling is definitely BY FAR my #1 white grape varietal.

    Cheers, GV!

Gary-QOTD: Fav. White is Martin Codex Albarino. You insisted that we try Albarinos and that’s what I could find near me. It does NOT disappoint!! Very excellent wine with or without food. Especially good with shell fish or just plain fish!! :)

  59. February 11, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

The show title was a bit confusing (thought it would be NA wineries that imported their juice!)

QOTD — I keep trying all sorts of white, and they never get above merely serviceable for me. My pal prefers pinks for most of the times others like whites

    “T”

  60. February 11, 2008

Willamette valley riesling not the best white but reminds me of good times.

I am new to winetv and I love it. I have been watching a couple of episodes a day to get caught up. I got a “big ass glass” which my husband calls my BAG. I thought it was kind of clever but I’m sure someone has come up with this before. I really enjoy your show.
QOTD: VIÑA DOÑA PAULA Malbec Luján de Cuyo Los Cardos is the last new wine I’ve tried.

    Great show Gary!

Thanks for the photo-op to open the show, never thought I would be there!
But seriously, Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl, at least make it challenging and take Walter Payton.

QTOD: Just called my girlfriend and right now am enjoying some Nassau Valley white wines.

  65. February 11, 2008

    CindyW

Isn’t Ash Hollow a Washington wine? (not Oregon, as listed in the link) I’ve tried and enjoyed several of their wines and will have to pick up some gewurzt next.

Just texted my hubby to tell him I love him. :)

Favorite whites — almost too many to list. I’ve become a convert this year, and I drink many more white wines than ever before. Generally, I enjoy vouvrays, sancerres, torrontes (thanks to a recent episode of WLTV!), and gewurztraminers (especially when paired with super spicy Thai food). One of my local faves is the DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate Blanc. I also really love Huet vouvrays.

    Gary

Love right back at ya…keep up the fine work my man…
QotD : Vergelegen Sauv. Blanc 2005 South Africa…great stuff and Vinoptima Gewurstraminer 2003, Gisborne New Zeeland…also fantastic.

    Omallley

Great show, GV. Especially enjoyed the Rousanne – I’m always curious if/how wines can hold it together above 14%…

    DOTD: Check, check and check.

QOTD: Rieling. Not “new” in the sense that I’ve certainly had it before, but I’ve been really more focused on trying it from different regions (Alsace, BC, Germany, Australia, etc) in recent months.

  68. February 11, 2008

    Justin C

DOTD: Sundays are weekly fam nights–Called Mom and Dad last night. The big bro called me last night so talked to him also. I suppose I should call the little sis so she doesn’t feel left out.

QOTD: Rosemount Traminer/Riesling–it’s like drinking a handful of razor blades–razor sharp–awesome.

  69. February 11, 2008

    Dominus

Really gooooood show. I’ve been getting into the whites big time this winter season which usually encompasses du Papes and Syrahs.

QOTD: My recent fav white has been the Emmolo SB from CA though I hope your recently reviewed Viognier will become the new white king of my PAL or the Gravner I received as one of the prizes from MenuForHope.

    Cheers!

  71. February 11, 2008

    Chandler

DOTD: Told my girlfriend I lover her and will tell my family.
QOTD: I’m currently seeking out Riesling from different areas and Gewürztraminer as well.

  72. February 11, 2008

    Marshall

I agree that whites are just as complex and thought provoking as reds, but are they as healthy as red wine? Red wine has the polyphenerols and all that good stuff in the skin. I needs to get my antioxidants GV.

    QOTD: Rhone whites and Gewurtztraminer

  73. February 11, 2008

    KennyMac

I just gave my wife a kiss, along with our five month foster baby. We have a five week old foster baby as well, but he’s in the hospital getting over an infection. I’ll give him a kiss tonight when I go see him tonight.

QOTD: I’m a big fan of white wines, especially Reisling, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Gris, but recently I came across a Siegerrebe here in BC that I really enjoy.

  74. February 11, 2008

    Rob P

I recently tried a white Cote du Rhone and loved it. I drank it over the course of 3 days and each time I loved the nose even more. The reason it took me so long to drink was because I enjoyed the nose so much. I also tried a Sancerre last week for the first time and continued to confirm that I love Sauv Blanc. Gawurtz is one of my favorites too. The more I write the more I realize how much I like white wine. I NEED to try more riesling.

My QOTD: Who is better…Randall Cunningham from Tecmo 2 or Bo Jackson from Tecmo 1?

QOTD 2: In Bill Walsh College Football (Sega Genesys circa 1995), has anyone ever audibled from a running play with Bo Jackson to a field goal. You can kick 65 and 70 yard field goals with Bo Jackson.

Kissed and hugged my wife and 18 month daughter!!!

  75. February 11, 2008

    Marc

My son is a US Marine currently deployed. We keep in touch with him online often.

QOTD: New favorite: China Silk Wine’s Reisling..only 7 US Bones!

  76. February 11, 2008

    Erica37

My dad got the love after the thunder show! And right now my favorite white wine is a 2006 Sauvignon Blanc by Preston Premium Wines out of Washington – but Ash Hollow’s tasting room in Walla Walla is right next to Preston’s, and I bought that Gewurtz a while back and fell in love! You stole my favorite, GV!

  77. February 11, 2008

DUDE you rocking an original TECMO BOWL
Talking about some flashbacks. That has to be like the all time greatest old school football game.

  78. February 11, 2008

    Christopher J

    DOTD: My wife, kids.

QOTD: Sebeka Chardonnay from South Africa. Widely available and relatively inexpensive. It is an excellent wine for my PAL.

  79. February 11, 2008

    Christopher J

Also, the NES cartridge brought back memories of some historic 9 on 9 Tecmo Bowl football action, thanks. They just released it on the virtual console on the Wii and I am in Tecmo heaven!! Too bad there is no Jets though.

  80. February 11, 2008

    Linderelli

QOTD: I’m a huge fan of Viognier and also Albarino right now. And still exploring Sauv Blanc and Semillon blends.

Glad to see you propping out WA again. Ash Hollow makes pretty great wines! Can’t wait till Taste Washington in April! Will get to see a lot of other great offerings there.

My DP Chris is the best, and though he used to be the type to not want to say those three little words, he’s catching on. I tell him all the time.

  81. February 11, 2008

    Neil

QOTD: Not to jump on the ABC band wagon but we had a wonderful Reisling with dinner last week. Viognier, White CdP & Sauvignon Blanc are favorites too.

DOD: It’s My Birthday today! I’ll be sharing good times and wine with the family and I have to agree, it’s all about family.

  82. February 11, 2008

So much Love! I must say Riesling is my favorite white along with Fume’ Blanc. I have yet to try a large variety of wines but am working on it.

  85. February 11, 2008

Gotta say I just discovered your (THE) Show this past weekend and I’m addicted. I definitely love wines and I’m definitely on the beginning edge of the bell curve that is wine enthusiasm, case in point being that I’ve probably only drank 8 full bottles of different wine in my life (I just turned 21, give me a break here).

QOTD: Tried a Monkey Bay White Wine that kicked all sorts of taste, but I can’t remember the vintage. Hmm. I drank a wine this past week called from California called BAREFOOT Sauvignon Blanc 2006. My favorite by far so far.

  86. February 11, 2008

    GR8Vintage

QOTD: Fairview Viognier from South Africa….tough to find but a real delight. Great nose and fabulous fruit…very yummy.

Sent the 2 year old nephew kisses via webcam…can’t beat it when the relatives are out of state. Cheers!

  87. February 11, 2008

    David Dadekian

Going upstairs to kiss my wife and new daughter now (not that I ever need a push for that!). And I’ll be e-mailing after dinner. Thanks, Gary.

QOTD: New? I’ve always enjoyed whites, but I suppose new would be Albarino.

  88. February 11, 2008

    Palmer

QOTD: Lemelson Tikka’s Run Pinot Gris Willamette Valley – need to buy more it’s so good.
DOTD: Called my godmother and chatted for 15 minutes.

Lovingly assaulted my wife at your request, GV.

QOTD: Actually Alstatian Gewurztraminer is a new favorite. Found a nice, acidic, bone dry one at the WL, of course. The ‘04 Trimbach, now sold out. Where’s the ‘05?????

  91. February 11, 2008

QOTD- Lately I’ve been really liking a white Aglanico. Always been a big fan of Vionier and all those obscure Italian varietals.

  94. February 11, 2008

    Jaybird

DOTD: Told the entire family on Sunday how much I love them, which was my 12 year anniversary of my Spinal Cord Injury. We all knew how close I was not to making it out of the hospital, which makes everyday so special. Of course we celebrated the day with some big exciting wines including Velvet Glove, Two Hands and Veuve Clicquot.

    QOTD: Albarino
Kissed my husband and my cat Sailor who is successfully recovering from a back wound inflicted by Tigger (I’m sure Sailor started the fight). Drain is out and so is Elizabethan collar (Sailor removed it himself). I kissed Tigger too.
Has your table always been blue? It’s very attractive.
I’m going to have to have Haagen Daaz coffee ice cream pretty soon.

    Gary,

Great show…I needed that perspective. And in fact I sent out an email this afternoon to six of my closest friends from high school to let them know how important it is that we are all still so close!

QOTD: New favorite white…Dr. Franks Rkatsiteli 2006

  97. February 11, 2008

    BobbyTiger

One more time. What’s white wine?

  98. February 11, 2008

    Brandon T.

QOTD: I’m BIG on Roussanne, when it’s good… honey, oil, pear and apple, golden acidity… I’ve found Roussanne able to hold high alcohol pretty well, it can be a big white!

I don’t have anyone to kiss right now… what I would like to suggest is that Gary fly a hot model to the thunder and slather Petit Verdot grape jelly all over her bum and they would laugh and recite poems and it would be excellent sexuality !

  99. February 11, 2008

    Collin H

Really enjoyed the show. Primarily for the emphasis on trying new things and not ruling out the whites even in the middle of February.
QOTD – Torrontes. Great nose, crisp, best characteristics of a lot of grapes all in one package.

QOTD: This is in response to Sasha’s question… First off, I’d like to affirm that I am 13 years of age or older. Secondly, Obama would be a great president because he could inspire a new generation of Americans to engage in our political process. This could potentially do a few things… change our image in the world… make people believe that progress is possible, that war mongers need not control all of our lives… that reason, transparency and values can govern our decisions instead of repression, denial, scapegoating and varying forms of imperialism… The new kind of politics that Obama stands for and speaks about are not simply rhetoric because they embody the hopes of so many; young and old, male and female, every class and ethnicity… This election is special because there is this opening in which change is possible, as long as we don’t let this moment pass us by.

C’mon GV, What’s up with the comment about the Big Ten. Honestly I’m not sure if it was a compliment or a bash, but you can’t be hatin’ on us Midwest boys. 17th best sounds like a great football recruit to me, but a bad ranking…so I’m not sure exactly what you meant. Anyway, nice show, as always.

QOTD1: My fiance, Bro, Bro in law, dad, cousin

QOTD2: I’m diggin Monkey bay Suav Blanc. But to be honest, unless I’m eating it with cheese most new world rieslings appeal to me more.

I’m intrigued by the Roussanne…sorry that one didn’t meet your expectations. We’re fans of Gewurztraminer here. Appreciate your emphasis on family.

QOTD: We haven’t found a new white wine…I know we should be trying more of them. I love Rieslings, Gewurztraminers (like I said), many Chenin Blancs, some Tarantas.

American rhone whites seem to be killin it my book. Good call, good EP G-Man.

    Hilarious!

QOTD: Domaine Veronique De MacMahon 2005. I’ve had this wine on a few occasions and it just blows me away with it’s roasted PEANUTS nose and flavor. I love roasted nuts (insert gutter joke) and this wine brings serious serious thunder. I’ve never recommended a wine to you GV but if you like peanuts and shells and seawater mixed together you’ll dig on this wine. Very viscous, too.

Demand of the day: Mother, Father, Unkle, Aunt, and two dear friends expecting a baby in a little bit…

QOTD: My goodness I’ve been on a white kick for about 3 months now…so it’s hard to say. I’d really have to say that Didier Dagueneau’s Pur Sang is really up there for me. I’d also have to say that there was a killer Spanish white I had last week…but that will take me digging out the notes…I’ll post that later.

In other coments about spreading the Thunder I thought I’d say that I’m inviting all of the staff at three different places I work or volunteer(a homeless shelter for teens, assisted living program, and a teen group home…about 18 people) over to my apartemnt for a wine tasting featuring wines from Oregon. While they are here were are all going to sit down and watch WLTV for their first time…so they can see another way to learn about wine. With my summer job as a wine director for a 500+ selection wine list I am constantly asked questions…this will hopefully create a few new Vayniacs from the group. Here’s what I’m going to open for them….

    Whites
    2006 Anne Amie Pinot Gris
    2006 St. Innocent Pinot Blanc
    2005 Bergstrom Eyre Vineyard Chardonnay

Gary, great episode today for a variety of reasons. Mostly because I took a white wine to a dinner party with people who don’t usually drink white wine, it just happend to be a Columbia Valley Gwertz. I have also created a lurker, next step is to get him to comment.
QOTD- Albarino, I have only had it twice now. I plan to have again soon, probably next trip to the store or next online order.

I love you bro and I sent you a text back to your phone but it didn’t go through. It was that mobile test message I got form you yesterday…..maybe that’s why???

So I emailed a friend of mine who is president of the Hells Angels. Another who is a very big Porn Star…shuuuu!! can’t say who…. and a few people who I haven’t talked to in a while. Couldn’t tell my Mom because she left this earth 10 years ago almost to the day. But I did tell her in another way. But she already knew that…

I just finished listening and haven’t acted on the demand yet, apart from kissing one of the kitty-cats who’s lying on my shoulder. But my husband (and the other kitties) will surely get some kisses tonight. And I’ve identified at least four people that I’ll call or email tomorrow.

To start off: Brandon T., I appreciate what you have to say there. Let’s care about more than just ourselves. Diversity of opinion and belief strengthens our country as long as each of us realizes that.

DOTD: Father-In-Law is about to go in for some cancer therapy. Since I feel as you do, GV, about family, there is no question that he will hear from me and his son tomorrow. I believe that my father-in-law will be fine (thank God). But, thanks, GV, for reminding everyone just how important the peeps are.

QOTD: Hate to admit it, but I have been buying a few whites lately. Preference is for Sauv Blancs and Reislings.

I have this friend who has a very demanding job but also finds time to do a daily internet video, over 400 so far! It is very entertaining, but I worry about the time commitment and I am afraid he doesn’t have enough time left for those he loves most; his bride, parents, and siblings. Favorite new white: TORRONTES. Used it to celebrate Chinese New Year yesterday with family and friends. Love the bright lychee aromas for Chinese, Thai, Indian food. Similar aroma to Gewurztraminer, though very different in the mouth than Gewurztraminer. I’ve had a few different Torrontes and love ‘em.

Like ALBARINO not quite as much, as it seems to be a blend of Muscadet and Macon in about 60/40 proportion to me. But will try more. I’ve had two Albarino so far.

QOTD: The Cazin Cour-Cheverny Cuvee Renaissance, it’s a little wine I never heard of, took a chance and loved it. The grape is a Romorantin. I have never heard if it, but it’s like chewing dried fruit but not in an offensive way, really a cool thing to try.

Wow, I really needed this episode. Tonight I sang at a funeral for a really wonderful man, who left behind four children (in their 20s) and a wife. There were maybe 1,200 people at the service – he was a beloved professor. When I got home from the funeral there were my husband and Vivian, and we danced and hugged and sang together. So tonight I already emailed my mom, dad, and sister to tell them how much I love them.

My new fave white wine? I’m drinking a New Zealand Chardonnay right now… lots of honey and apple and buttered popcorn on the nose. And I’m drinking it at room temp, something new for me since watching the Thunder Show.

Thank you, Gary, for a very interesting episode and for the reminder about what’s really important in life.

QOTD: I’m torn between Albarino and Torrontes–neither of which I had ever even heard of pre-WLTV. If I had to choose between the two (but I don’t, do I?) I guess I’d go with the Albarino. However, I just found a Falanghina this weekend, so who knows how long Albarino will remain on top.

    GV, Amazing episode.

I had a question about whites which I tend to drink more due to reds making me slightly tired. I enjoy the taste and aromas of whites that have pear, peach, and lemon characteristic much more so than the sour apple profile (though I do like the occasional granny smith– i.e. Black Pig Albarino). Are these profiles limited to certain grapes or is somewhat of a crap-shoot as to different regions, vintages, etc.?

QOTD: I had an amazing Riesling from the Wolf River Valey or something the other day. I forgot to get the name, but I’ll go to the store and find out.

I am a distributor for you, which probably disqualifies me from…I don’t know. Perhaps from everything. So. Anyway. My wife is the most amazingly kind and entertaining person–all the more amazing considering the kind of jerk she lives with. AND (here it is) Peter Schandl Pinot Blanc (that Ian tasted today) has, by far, been my most favorite white over the last six months or so (as you know, if you are tasting all the time, favorites don’t last).
    Ciao, Gary!

DOTD: Sent 4 e-mails, 2 phone calls and one in person to the love of my life.

QOTD: I still drink 4 to 1 red as I can’t settle on a white. I started with Pinot Gris, went to Gewurz and Riesling. Lately I have been trying Sauv Blancs but have to say that Viognier is intriguing me the most right now. Am really excited to start seeking out Pinot Noir/Viognier blends that you have mentioned recently.

QOTD – New favorite White wine is Pera-Manca, but the lure of Red wines is that they are better for your heart. As almost every male in my family, father uncles, cousins, my age or older has had a fatal heart attack, I am not giving-up my preference for reds. A close family friend, who would only drink white wine, changed his preference after his first heart attack.

I’ve dropped over 200 bones in the last couple of weeks looking to find a Sauv Blanc (tried, Argy, Chile, NZ) I might like. I’m about to give it a pass, but will try a Babich as last chance. In the meantime, I picked up a Sicilian Grillo (Feudo d’Elimi ‘08) on impulse last week, tried it on the weekend, and EUREKA, a new white that I now will look for more of, along with my trusty Rieslings. Most of the Pinot Gris, and the Torrontes I find passable but “meh”, and the Chards and Gewurtz’s offend my pal. Have yet to find an albarino, though, so I’ll keep looking and hoping. That and the Torrontes I had never heard of b4 WLTV, and the Grillo was completely out of the blue.

My wife is pretty anti P(ublic)DA, and only lukewarm about P(rivate)DA, except with the grandkids, but I do my best. My Dad (90) phoned tonight with the wonderful news he’s moving from the Wet Coast to a condo in the town next to us. Gave him all our love, too.

Leaving the love behind a bit, find a new annoyance in repeated last 3 or 4 messages when moving through the pages. Can something be done about that?

Another amazing show Gary. Any guy who can get all mushy about their family and encourage others to do the same is a “REAL” man in my book. e-mailed son and parents.

QOTD just got back from trip to Portland, Oregon. Went to the Lemelson Vineyard in Carlton, Oregon and tasted their wines. Came back with some 2006 Dry Riesling and some 2006 Tikka’s Run Pinot Gri. I think they are both wonderful, wish I’d bought more while I was there as I can’t get them in Utah and I can’t have anybody ship them to me.

Torrontes from Argentina and Vermentinos from Sardinia. Both super crisp and characterful and both obscure enough that you can get great examples for 10 bucks or less.

  192. February 12, 2008

    Yoni Rabkin

Had sushi yesterday with the Yativ 2005 sauvignon blanc. White wines can indeed rock.

DOTD: Had dinner with my parents tonight, went to the movies with my girlfriend, told my niece she is the coolest kid in the world, extra petting for the dog and cat!

QOTD: After watching the Torrontes show, I sought a couple out. The Bodega Colome Torrontes 2007, and the Quara Torrontes 2006. The Quara was a little simple, but for like $8 packed a lot of aroma and flavor. The Colome was amazingly aromatic, huge floral component (soap too maybe) and some lemon-lime! Also just had the Lois Gruner Veltliner which was pretty cool.

Gary this was an excellent show … really good tasting notes! But man I gotta say that I probably wouldn’t even be watching this show if it wasn’t for your heart, it really is in the right place spread the love brother! That really is what’s important I love it!

GV, you’re right on the money, I watched the show and kissed my wife on the forehead. She’s been sick for about 2 weeks and has to suck it up each day ’cause she teaches 3rd graders and is dedicated to her job.
QOTD: You’ll be proud, lately I’ve been seaking out Torrontes wines and have really enjoyed them during a time when I normally would just be drinking reds. I’ll for sure seek out the Ash Hollow, I like a good Gewurz.

I just turned 21 about an hour ago, and later today I will be having my first real glass of wine. I have been trying to learn as much about wine as possible recently and can’t wait to start enjoying it.

Demand: I just told my sister up in heaven that I love her. I haven’t talked to her since she died a few months ago, so I think it was overdue. I know she was listening to me.

Question: We will have to wait and see.

    Lysa Marie

QOTD – my favorite white wine is from a vineyard I visited this summer in Traverse City, MI. It’s a chardonnay from Bowers Harbor Vineyard and the reason I like it so much is that it doens’t taste like a chardonnay. It tastes like a Reisling! 17 bones – a little more than I spend normally, but definitely worth it.

Also, gotta love a show where the colour of a wine is described as “Hulk Hogan’s hair circa ‘84! And I totally had Jelly shoes in the 80’s!

  201. February 12, 2008

Qotd- I was just drinking an Evesham Wood Pinot Gris – Gewurtz blend while watching the show. Good with the cheese! I am anxious to try a J Christopher unoaked, no malo, Chardonnay from Oregon that I just bought today. He is so cutting edge. His $17 Oregon Pinot called Zoot Allures is kicking up quite a storm out here in the Oregon Territory.

Emailed my daughter to finalize plans to visit this weekend. She said she is an alternate delegate for King Co. WA for Obama! Dad is a staunch GOP guy, but I am still so proud of her.

  216. February 12, 2008

    Brad Coelho

Come on Vayner-beast, break down and chill those whites! Sometimes enjoying wine isn’t about ‘finding flaws,’ it’s about a great experience! You are definitely heat sensitive, but the Alban Roussanne is too delicous to not cool off a bit in the fridge…Roussanne, in general, doesn’t have enough acidity to be served warm anyway- chill ‘em out or they’ll be hot and flabby, give your big whites some help brothah!

  217. February 12, 2008

    Shadowbird

DOTD: I will hug my parents and say hello to my little niece. Hug my friends, send an e-kiss to my distant girlfriend…

QOTD: Haven’t had any whites in a while.

  218. February 12, 2008

    Bernie Bearnaise

Totally agree with your philosophy. Is Pinot Grigio (and not Pinot Gris) the new Chardonnay? Viognier and Marsanne are of course aromatic Cotes du Rhone varietals. For lemony flavor to go with fish try Picpoul de Pinet. A wine that I recently bought that was recommended by Calvert-Woodley called Chateau Calabre from Montravel, France. It is a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon. It had a balanced profile and nicely layered flavors. The bottle had a stamped phrase at the base of the shoulder “In Monte Revelationem” with a little castle over it. It is imported by Robert Kacher Selections of Washington, DC.

Kissed and Hugged By Wife and Step-Children, and My Cat..and my picture of Gary Vaynerchuck….(Kidding I don’t roll that way..not that there’s anything wrong with that…LOL) New favorite white varietal…I have 2 Albarino and Torrontes… Old Favorite as a bonus answer…still can’t beat Oregon Pinot Gris and sad that in order to compete with Cali-town they had to beg and overturn the 1977 regulations of only being able to call the grape Pinot Gris in Oregon and now are allowed to label as Pinot Grigio. Don’t sell out Oregon, Don’t reduce yourselves to California Labeling tactics…Pinot Gris. Love Erath Pinot Gris and A-Z Wineworks Pinot Gris..88 and 89 points Wine Spectator 2004 Vintage

Yay for the Ash Hollow gewurz! Delicious stuff, I’m happy to say from experience. Washington state still is — inexplicably — the best-kept secret in the wine world. Fortunately, there are a couple of good online sources for the hard-to-find Washington wines that Wine Library may not carry.

QOTD: Albarino has definately become a new favorite of mine. It brings a new flavor that a lot of other whites don’t bring to the table. But I’m a sucker for the 2005 Monkey Bay Pinot Grigio. The grapefruit component of the wine blows me away.

QOTD: They’re all pretty new to me… well, except for Pinot Grigio and Chard :-) . I don’t have one fave, but I have really enjoyed Gewurtz, Riesling, Viognier, Viognier/Rousanne/Marsanne, Chenin Blanc, Sauv Blanc (new to me!)… for future consumption on deck are Vinho Verde, Muscadet, Albarino, Pinot Blanc, Semillon, Ugni Blanc (Trebbiano), some blends too.

I love Reisling! Hey, thanks again for coming on WineCountryTalkRadio(TM) this past Saturday. The show was a smash! We’re getting great feedback here in So Cal. And, I totally am ditto on family!!! My two sons are married and near your age, and my daughter and her husband are just a little younger. They call me and my wife all the time to say “love you”. There isn’t anything better than when we all get together as family (and we do that very often)!

Good show. Sorry to hear that the Alban fried you. I really dug the 2005 Alban Viognier that I drank last May. If anyone cares, I gave it a 90. My notes: “Fragrant, tropical nose. Lush, peachy honeysuckle Viognier nose. Well balanced, delicious guava/peach fruit. Perhaps a touch light acidity, and a bit drier than other Viogniers I have had. Delicious finish. Good effort overall. I would drink this again in a heartbeat.”

I agree with Gary. Try Alban, folks!

QOTD: Long story short: have not had good luck on reds lately, which we were definitely biased towards in the past. Trying new things, but mostly been saying howdy to the oak monster. On the other hand, whites have been kind to us. Last week enjoyed a Cusumano Insolia 2006 Sicilia – no idea what the grapes were, would love to know. Last night we made coq au vin with a great cheap Silvaner halbtrocken (Gysler 2006). Also recently enjoyed an Alsatian blend.

GV, I rarely leave comments but I appreciate what you are doing, so i guess that I am one of those “lurkers”, sorry.
QOTD- PG’s and Rieslings from Alsace mostly, plus the prosseco bubblies, what’s not to love?

Well done GV. Clearly you’re coming from the heart when you talk about family. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have most of my immediate and extended family close by including my 91 year old grandmother who really enjoyed the last wine tasting party I put together. Lots of kissing in my family.

As far as ‘new whites’ I’ve been enjoying, I’d have to say rieslings from the Mosel Saar Ruwer, particularly the spatlese variety. I love the full bodied, almost oily mouthfeel and those burnt tire/petrol scents combined with the apples and pears and honey flavors. Plenty of good wines from there in the $12 range and some really awesome wines in the $30-$40 range (JJ Pruhm comes to mind).

Also a huge fan of Alsatian rieslings, NZ Sauv Blancs, Greco di Tufo and Vermentinos from Italy and our own Finger Lakes rieslings.

    Agent Orange,

Insolia is the grape variety…great stuff. There are so many little known regional white varieties in Italy…fun to explore.

I was able to try several Ash Hollow wines at their tasting room in Walla Walla. I was very impressed. They were out of the gewertz, but I got a couple bottles of their Cab Sav for my up coming wine tasting party.

how cold are the white wines when you try them?? I’m afraid that I always drink white wine that is too cold (but still like it :) My parents, from Catalonia, always drink Cava, very cold… so I guess I got from them how I drink the white wines

QOTD: I would have to say that my new white favorite would be the Tokaji szarmorodni wines. They are nutty and creamy like a sherry rather than sweet like the Tokaji dessert wines.

You finally drew me out. A lurker from the beginning. Have sent key shows to all my wine buddies, especially those on developing your palate.

New white wines that I find different and intriguing are the Torrontes from Argentina and especially the Traminette from Connecticut.

    PS: Called my mom.

    Gary,
Good call on getting me to call my dad. We ended up laughing about how I’m up for jury duty. He said the best way to avoid jury duty is to keep on referring to the defendant as “that guilty SOB.”
    He’s too funny.

DOTD. My wife. She is out of town and I miss her.

QOTD. Not sure. I like white wines a lot, but lately I’ve been getting a bit tired of the citrus flavors that many of them bring — big grapefruit, big lemon. I want something else for a while. One very interesting white that I had recently was a wine called “Sillery” made by Frecciarossa in Oltrepo Pavese, Lombardia, Italy. It’s white (!) Pinot Nero (a.k.a., Pinot Noir).

QOTD: Don’t know if it’s a favorite since I haven’t experienced too many white wines, but I recently bought a 2005 (I think) Louis Jadot Chardonnay that I liked. I also bought a 2005 Willm Pinot Gris. They were “ok”. I do know that for an evening watching “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Ugly Betty” they were too pricey (one was $13.99, the other $15.99). I’m certain I could have purchased something that “brings the thunder” at a lower price-point!

    Mott,

You gotta turn down Gary’s music in his office before the shoot. (What sounds like bad 80’s female pop singers) is driving me crazy when I watch it with headphones and my iPod…

Other than that, keep up the good work.

QOTD: 2006 St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc

This wine stood out at a polo-field tasting last fall among 15 other wineries as the “best in show”. Great balance and flavors.

I kissed my “better half” and called my mom.

I hate the oak monster. I started drinking wine a year ago and have never drank the same wine twice. It took me a few months to figure out the dominating flavor I cound in CA wines was oak. There is a local “winery” in TX that has oak flavoring they put into the must to make it seem like it was aged. All this has caused me to view over oaked wines as a pretty woman with too much make-up on. Love the show. Keep up the good work.

I call my folks (80 this year) often & always tell them I love them. It makes my dad squirm, which is so fun! My bro & sis are always getting told “Love ya!” And we all get it back. Gotta admit, we are a very demonstrative family when it comes to affection.

White wines? I’m working on it.

I have a lot of comments to make up for Gary…

I will kiss and hug my girlfriend this weekend for you. (She too is a diehard Jets fan)We’re going to Mohegan Sun for a late Valentine’s Day. The wine is picked and the jacuzzi sweet is reserved…

I’d hug and tell you I love you in a non-gay way next time I’m in NJ, is that enough love for ya??!!

    Karl Laczko

I liked the sound of the Ash Hollow, but sounds nothing like what I’m used to out of Alsace. I don’t think I’ve had a New World Gewurtz.

DOTD – Will do, Valentine’s day was a start.

QOTD – New? Not so much, but I really get Verdejo from Rueda. Am experimenting with others, so may get back to you.

I’m watching this way late as I have been out of town. My youngest is coming in from Brooklyn to VA Beach today for his birthday. Turned he and his friends on to WLTV and they formed a wine tasting group based on GaryV’s inspiration.
When I was in Paso Robles and Los Oivos last winter had a lot of Rousannes that were great and nowhere near the price point of the one on the episode today. This has been one of my favorite white wine grapes always. Albarño has been my favorite new white.

    Love the background porn music!
More 80’s references please (”wine color like Hulk Hogan’s golden locks”…awesome!)

That show ended so great with the Lovie Love. I decided to the 5 pieces of love out: 2 for my wife and one year old…but also to 3 friends that I haven’t been good with keeping in touch with. You know the ones….the ones that you can not hear from in months but your friendship is as strong as ever. We’re getting together for some wine! Thanks Gary.

As for whites…you’ll hate me…still working on my “RED pal”…
but sitting in front of me is an Italian white: Argiolas Costamolino…apparently something called a Vermentino grape (???) Very excited!

    Gary,
This was a great episode — I love Alban’s wines — but good to know on the pass — I just got the Ash Hollow today from Wine Library — they were nice enough to get some more in when it was sold out. I love it — and it is like sucking on a box of lemonheads. Thanks for the tip.

GV – I agree with your sentiments. To take it a step further, the order of all in life is God (whomever you pray to), Family, Work. If you get this out of balance, you will feel empty.

I say “I love you” to my wife and 4 kids every day, which is why I am not a Valentine’s Day celebrator.

White Wine Shout Out – Albarino, or Rioja Bianco.

    Josh in Burgundy

Manage to make my girlfriend feel special on Valentines despite her being in Cali and me being in Burgundy so I consider that spreading the thunder.

QOTD: Muscadet de Sevre et maine, nice inexpensive white that would seem to go great with some sort of sea food. A nice find

I was disappointed to see the poor showing of the Alban Rousasane as like you it is one of my favorite white grapes. Is this part of the alcohol creep we have seen so much about? I had a Zind recently that the bottle said was 16.2% but it was a port to me at 17-18%. Had one Gewürtztraminer from Stoney Hill winery that I really liked and the style wasn’t too floral with green tea and chamomile aspects to it.

Is it weird that Im happy the wine from my state won the tasting today? Cant help it… Love seeing those Washington wines bring it! DOTD: Havent done it yet, but I always tell my friends online around the country that I love them ( parents, too). QOTD: Furmint. Those Tokaji aszu wines are simply magical.
