QOTD – No I will not go out and try a Loire Valley Cab Franc this weekend. Unfortunately I have a long weekend in Walla Walla planned and that is going to eat up my wine budget for a few weeks. However, I will make an effort to try a LVCF before the end of Q1.

    Hey Gary-
Somehow I knew that this ep. would be one that you’d really get into…just like the PV ep.
Probably the most interesting thing I noticed today (and I don’t know why I didn’t notice it sooner) is that you are honest 100% of the time. For instance….after having Larkin’s Cab. Franc…you picked up your stress football and started saying all the things you liked about the wine, until the oak monster came out. Yet, for some strange reason, I know that you wanted to spit out the wine and just say you didn’t like it. Still…as you clearly put it… Larkin is your friend and I can competely understand the “walking on eggshells” approach to evaluating his wine. In the end, I really hope that he appreciates your honesty….everyone has an opinions, but I think that he would value yours alittle more than mine.

qotd: I will try a Loire valley cab franc, but possibly not this week. I’m cooking and selecting wines for Valentine’s Day, and we have a champagne party this Saturday, and I’m still recovering from the cold/flu thing. Also, I’m not excited about the farmer’s market aspect, but I’ll try it.
Get off the web for at least Valentine’s Day.

Loire makes me think of awesome sweet honey oily juice and the vegetables are dirty with soy sauce and green raw beans and red beet roots and i just want to see gary slather cabernet frac grapes all over the excellent bum of a pretty model and they could all laugh and recite poems about the veggies and get close to jouissance with great sexuality?

Sorry GV,,,,no room in the budget for a LV Cab Franc this week,,,,this week I am going to a Andrew Will tasting(Chris is even going to be there)and I have only enough for some of his wine,,,,,I will Remember and have one soon, as I have tried our local ones(Washington) and enjoyed them in the past.

Always a bummer to have to tell a buddy his product is not so good,,,,I have friends who are brew masters and have to tell them this from time to time,,,,,never an easy thing to do.

i am still feelin my way through chino and cab franc. i have not given up on it, but it doesn’t tickle my elmo. i bout some charles joguet, les varennes du grand clos 05. i have not tapped it yet, but when it is mature, i look forward to it. i am trying.
it is a tough deal to drop some major constructive criticism on your buddies but i commend you for doing it. it could have been easy to say it is great, buy 2 cases!
QOTD: i will go out and get some. there are some that i have been checkin out.i told myself no french wine for 2 weeks with the exception for vday with some champagne : )

We’ve had Cab Franc but not from Loire Valley. It would be an educational experience.

QOTD: Probably not this weekend…Seeing as it is the weekend after valentines day and we aren’t going to have much time to celebrate during the week. We are pretty much looking to enjoy a wine that we both think is DELICIOUS…maybe a zinfandel. But we will look for it in the future.

    Cheers!

Today was a great example of why WLTV rocks (fun, instructive and with honesty and integrity). Saying exactly what you thought about the Larkin bottle took guts but its exactly why I watch. No bs, but straight from the heart. Thanks GV!:)

QOTD: If I can find one I will definitely try and report back…not a lot of variety here on the plains.

GV you need to do a show with a live audience this year. Not just the drive by audience you get in the office but a serious vayniac attended live show. I think it would be HUGE!!

  48. February 12, 2008

    Benjamin

QOTD: Sorry man, but 1: I can’t drop 20 bucks on a single bottle of wine, 2: the
“old world” taste absolutely does not appeal to me, and 3: there are a million (well, 20-30) other wines that I need to try asap.

Hell, I enjoyed the episode though. Funky vegetables in the rain, wet dog and cow shit- sounds familiar. Maybe if I drink a shot of pure everclear and my tastebuds burn out I’ll enjoy the funk. I’ll bookmark this episode and put it in my “to try in one year” folder.

I’ll try a Cab Franc some time, sure! Even if I don’t generally enjoy green peas up in my grille. I still think it’s funnier what you said yesterday’s show: ‘Ask your Alsatian uncle Jorge’. GV you come up with the most off-the-wall stuff out of that Russian-American cranium :-) .

  62. February 12, 2008

I’m a huge fan of Cab Franc, especially form the Loire. Great show today.

I always find in a great cab franc a note of black olives. *shrug*.

QOTD: Yes…I will try to find a Cab Franc.

Good episode, I don’t know a lot about this grape, and have not tried it as a main varietal (only had it in blends). But like so many times before, you have inspired me to seek out this juice, and give it a whirl. Cheers!

  64. February 12, 2008

    David Harris

I drank that same bottle of bourguiel during dinner before watching the show tonight.

I didn’t notice any funk! Just really beautiful fruit and maybe a hint of strawberry leaves.

My parents who only buy low end california wine loved it. So I think that schtick about not very many newbies liking it was a little off.

    Great show,
    David

I was like so ahead of your train and had Loire Valley CF last frida. It was 2001 Chinon La Baronnie Madeleine from Couly-Dutheil – it was mighty good and very suitable for all sorts of foods. A very good acidity.

Thanx for another fine show with interesting wines!

  66. February 12, 2008

GV- thanks for the Cab Franc episode, I’m a fan but the girly is not and this will help us sort out new wines. QOTD: Its on the wish list. I can not promise this weekend, but soon. I’ll email you when we have one.

Have only tried one cab franc (st. supery) and was not impressed. Will go to the local wine shop and get a loire valley one this week. I promise. Way to keep up the integrity of the show. (Although I was pumped by the name…Larkin..best shortstop EVER!)

Hey! 2005 Mabileau Loire CF was the forum WOTM tasting this past June. I think we all liked it. How about tasting the 2006 version that you have in stock -OR- the 2006 Owen Roe Oregon Cab Franc. That would be an interesting wine to check out.

  70. February 12, 2008

    Cookiedds

2004 Domaine de Pallus Chinon. I love this wine, it’s like having a petite canape of wild mushroom duxelle with a splash of tomatoe puree and then setting a 2 pound giant dill pickle on top. Cab Francs are wonderful wines, very adaptable with lots of foods and great on their own.

  71. February 12, 2008

    Mike Z in SD

Sean has gotta respect you for your candor, GV. Maybe he’ll even ease up on the monster.
I will promise you that I’ll go to the local wine shop this weekend and check out their selection of Loire reds. I can tell you that I had a Chinon about 6-7 years ago and I think I wasn’t ready… too vegetal, and not fruity enough for me at the time. Maybe time to revisit.

  72. February 12, 2008

    Bob Sikorski

I never had a Cab Franc, but I will try one. By watching your shows I have learned that trying different wines is like looking at at painting from a different angle. OK, I admit that it sounds hokey, but each wine varietal is all part of a puzzle, and you have to look at each piece before you can put the puzzle together.

  73. February 12, 2008

    Tony V.

QOTD: Nice timing GV, I ordered a Chinon today before watching. ‘04 Langlois Chateau Chinon Les Mont Rouge. Dont know anything about. PROMISE I’ll write back when I taste it this week…

  74. February 12, 2008

    Scott EJ

GV…keeping it real. I’m sure your bud understands/

Don’t do too much Loire as most of our wine marts focus on the usual regions: Bord, Burg, Rhone. That has got to change. I’ve picked up more “obscure” wines from you in my short few of watching you than I ever have from my local places and I live in a pretty big market (Chicago). Why…you may ask. ‘Cause they do not have your selection. Sams/Binnys pale in comparison to WL. Which is why I say it would be a major move for you to take a look at opening up a shop out here. It would kill. And, with 06/01 looming large….it could not hurt.

I picked up a two’fer of Chinon from you a while back. The one with the two dogs on it. Not sure if it’s a cab frtanc, but, I’ll crack one this weekend in your honor anyway.

    Cya tomorrow.

    Gary,

I have a few cases in the cellar of cab franc Loire Valley wines all 90-92 points rating. How much bottle age will be good for the 2005’s or is it a drink now deal?

    Thanks

Thanks for getting to two wines on my wishlist GV! Had the ‘05 Mabileau St.-Nick-de-Bourgueil from ep. 175 this past weekend, and will most likely be opening up another bottle of La Noblaie Chiens-Chiens this coming weekend. Loving the values in Loire Reds!
MONTREAL IS DOWN WITH THE GV!

I’ve really enjoyed the old world style wines when I’ve been allowed to have them (other than my Dad who’s three states away, too many friends and family seem to prefer the fruit bombs), and your description of the first two were very intriguing. In fact . . .QOTD: in just a few moments I’m going to head out the door and down to one of the local wineshops to see what I can find.

WLTV was the best part of my otherwise somewhat crappy day … Cab
franc is by *far* my favourite grape (I LOVE when it brings the
Brussel sprouts, green pepper, mushrooms, and a
damp-leaves-in-autumn-in-the-sun smell I smelt on a certain afternoon
when wandering through the woods when I was young(er).), and it’s been
WAY too long since I’ve popped a bottle. On the other hand, I’m
    super-sad because I don’t have any here … Guess what I’m doing
    tomorrow :~}

QoTD: Absolutely! I promise to buy (and drink!!!) a cab franc
(probably from Loire … have to see what I can find at a price point
    I can afford) … but I can’t promise I’ll wait until this
    weekend ;~}!

Oh, I just watched _Sideways_ the other day … and noticed that he
nothing good to say about cab franc … but worshipped his bottle of
    Cheval Blanc … Rather funny.

POTD: I have only had one bottle of Cabernet Franc in my life (2004 Domaine de la Noblaie Chinon ‘Les Chiens-Chien’) and it was the most miserable wine experience of my life. I’m truly hoping that it was corked. I was sharing it with a great-grandma type and I was worried that I might have killed her. I poured 3/4 of the bottle down the drain. I have two more bottles of it and only YOU could get me to open another one of them. Seriously, I can’t imagine anyone who loves wine liking the way that first bottle smelled or tasted. Let you know Monday.

GV, you are totally a Picture Painter- every single glass of wine you taste is painted with a description! That’s why the Vayner Nation loves to hear your descriptions.

QOTD: Well twist my arm GV…I guess I’ll go out and find one this weekend. Some of the chinons that I’ve had in the past were too acidic for me, but maybe I’ll find one that is friends with my PAL.

While I can’t promise I will drink one this week, I regularly drink Chinon and have 3 in my wine fridge right now. I used to hate-hate-hate Cab Franc until I tried Chinon and not only do I love Loire reds now, I am a much bigger fan of new world Cab Franc as a result, such as the decent versions made in Virginia. I have been disappointed with most the Cali versions I have tried, however. Too overdone.

By the way guys, it is spelled BourguEIL, you have the I and the E reversed in the film and on the wine links list. :)

I don’t know GV, we have one Loire Cab Franc in the house–the Domaine de la Noblaie Les Chiens-Chiens. Neither of us “got it” on the first bottle we had a few months ago so we’re planning on holding on to that one until next year.

The Barboursville (Virginia) 2002 CF didn’t do much for us. We loved the Lang & Reed (California) 2002 CF (twice), green bell pepper and jalapeño all day long.

We didn’t plan on buying any more wine this month but our Total Wine (the only local place with online inventory) has a few Cab Francs for $10-$15. Any of these jump out at you?
Domaine Semellerie Chinon and three from Sauvion: Cabernet D’Anjou (70% CF, 30% CS), Les Roches Cachees, and Saumur Champigny.

Lovin’ the old world. I can’t say I’ve had a loire valley red, maybe I’ll splurge this weekend…

QOTD: One day when the dollar gets straightened up, or I start makin’ more dough I’ll be able to afford a loire valley red for everyday type drinking ;)

No promises from me. I have had Chinon and wondered why i did. Did not enjoy the funky barnyard. tasted like the feet of the old dude who stomped on the grapes. I think that old world flavor comes from funky old cellars and funky old barrels and is not a sign of terroir.
But hey, that’s my “pal” talking. And I do not believe GV reads all the comments.

Haven’t got my Cab Franc yet but already on top of it GV. I absolutely positively love and adore the living daylights out of Loire Valley Cab Francs. Next time go tri-force on our asses and bring an Anjou onboard. Long live the vegetable funked de funky funk!

    Gary,

AWESOME show! You had me reaching through the screen practically to grab the Bourgueil and Chinon. And of course, Sold Out. But that’s a good thing…And tellin’ Mom, “That’s not how I roll,” on the dirt bomb veggies out the market. Classic my friend.

GV I would totally seek out one of the first two wines but I just Checked the PLCB’s website and non are availble in my area… I wish we had a wine Library…

    QOTD: I could promise that.

I have to throw this out, there is a vineyard near my home in CT, Stonington Vineyards, that makes decent wine. Not fantastic, but decent. Unfortunately, as is common with most small vineyards outside major wine areas, the wines are also priced more toward $20, which makes the decent wines have a generally bad QPR. However, they make a Cab Franc that I really enjoy. I missed out on the recent vintage which bummed me out.

I can do that…I actually have two Chinons (1990 Raffault and 2004 Chiens-Chiens) that I keep meaning to crack, but never get around to it. Now I have a reason.

QOTD: Dude you are preaching to the require. Loire reds (and whites) are regular weekday wines for me. The only other region in France that brings that kind of value is Lanquedoc/Roussillon. Let people keep drinking supermarket junk from Australia and Cali. Keeps prices down where the real action is.

  121. February 12, 2008

QOTD: Unfortunately, the local HEB is the only place right around here to get wines. If I make a road trip this weekend I may be able to stop by the wine store a couple towns away and if so I will pick one up and get back to you.

I’ll definitely jump into a Loire Cab Franc and report back. I haven’t had any, but I’ve had plenty from the Finger Lakes and the North Fork of LI. They’re usually nothing to get too excited about…..BUT…

I’m currently making 5 gallons of Cab Franc (along with 5 gallons of Pinot Noir and 5 gallons of Riesling). 2007 was an EXCELLENT year for Finger Lakes grapes, especially the reds and particularly Cab Franc….should be superior to any year in decades. Hot days, cool nights and a looooong season with no rain around harvest time brought the usually underipe Cab Franc to full ripeness. 25 day maceration has yielded some great color. Can’t wait…plan to bottle this fall and pop the first bottle around Christmas. If it’s as good as I expect it will be I’ll fire you off a bottle.

Truth will never break a friendship. The problem is most people’s Pal love the Bombs, and are unwilling to go thru a short term palate adjusting period for long term wine pleasure. Trusting your Pal’s one thing, understanding quality is another(that’s not being snobby, is it?) I can’t say I’ve tried a Cab Franc, I thought it was mostly a blending grape, hope I find a good one.

Glad to hear you read posts on older episodes. I usually am a day or two behind, and never leave a post because I thought I had missed the boat. On to today’s episode. My wife, baby son and I went to Walla Walla for our 6th anniversary. We tried some really good wines. For dinner I had a a Cab Franc from Cougar Crest Winery. I was thoroughly impressed. Good fruit, and lots of veggies. For 38 dollars I am excited to try some cheaper Cab Franc’s from the Loire.

GV- During the episode we ran into our stash because I thought I had one and I pulled out a Loire Bourgueil 2005 we bought on a recommendation from our wine shop (also from Peter Weygandt). We decided to open it Valentines Day and cook a good dinner at home to go with it. Oh we cant wait!! Will post follow up in a few days….

QOTD – No, I won’t be drinking a Red from the Loire this weekend. BUT, my girlfriend, Abby, and I were in the Loire valley in 2006 and tried a bunch of local reds – mostly Chinon. We brought a bunch of wine back with us (when you could still carry on wine) and I think there may still be one bottle left. We will enjoy it soon, I promise that!

good heavens! the “bitch i can’t turn left” thing…HILARIOUS! i almost cried cause i laughed so hard…ok…ok…the vino. honestly, i have been seeking out da fank-da-funk for a while now just out of curiosity. i want to experience the funk, the veggies, the stink, all that stuff. so maybe this is the route.

Definitely going to be hitting up the cab franc this weekend. I was wondering about some food pairings with his bad boy. Since it is so vegetable would it go well with red meat? I was also thinking a nice pasta, don’t know, but this was a fantastic show. Keep up the good work. And take a break man.

I have had a few Cab Francs from Loire. A Chinon (rose & red), a Bourgueil, and one we pour by the glass at my restaurant. Out of the three I liked the Bourgueil most, it had the most complexity, though the rose from Chinon was (and still is) quite a treat.

Love the fact that you’re honest enough to pazzzz on a friends wine, that shows us all something about your character. I will go out a find Loire Cab Franc. Last time I was in Napa I asked around at various wineries if they had a CF, and almost all said nada and that not much is grown the Valley. I love CF and have some downstairs but they are all Cali wines, not Loire. Try Francis Ford C’s, very nice but a tad pricey.

Kudos for doing a show on cab franc! Picked up a case of Catherine et Pierre Brenton Bourgueil last year. World class wine. 15 bucks a bottle (before the case discount!). Brought some Cougar Crest CF recently too which is over the top and new world styled, but who doesn’t drinking their pie once in a while?

Heck yeah, I’ll promise. I had a Cab Franc from Washington tonight before I saw the show (nice coincidence) and it was green bell pepper, jalapeño, and the FUNK, like the inside of my 1979 Puma sneak. I will try the Loire and see how it does and repost here.

Another killer Thunder show GV. I’m very curious to seek out these Loire valley Cab Francs. I’ve had some Graves wines that have a lot of the earthy, pepper characteristics as wines do with blends of Cab Franc, but can’t recall the level of veggie characteristics you’re getting from the Chinon and Bourgeil. I’ll seek one out and let you know what I think ?
Thanks for keeping it real with the Larkin, tough to bust on a friends vino, but you have to be true to your pal for sure, thx ~ Max

QOTD: I am going to be defiant.

I like the chocolaty, smoky style of cab franc. My favorite was the 2004 Hess Collection. A wonderful wine is the 2004 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Cab Franc, but it is nothing like the Hess. I think that overall, 2004 was probably the best year recently (in California) for cab francs. 2005 is turning out to be more of a merlot/cabernet sauvignon year. I’m curious how the 2004 Larkin compares to the 2005.

I’ve really been on the look out for a vegetal cab franc. The last cab franc i had was from the okanagan; it tasted like cherry cotton candy and maple smoked bacon. it was nice but i was really looking forward to the herbaceousness

great show GV….. if you’re reading this, got a question for you
in jesper hill, you tried the georgia’s paddock quite sometime ago….. but the top of the range is emily’s paddock, shiraz with small blend of cab franc…. is it similar to shiraz viognier blend but this one gives more depth instead of brightness?

Hey GV, stop it already! ;)
Loire, Languedoc, Faugeres… you’re driving up demand for my favorite wines. ;)

    Hey GV!!

Everybody knows you rock. Hard. But I think we all realized how much you DO rock when we have an event that allows us to realize that on a whole new level. Had a blind tasting with friends this week. One of them brought what is arguably one of the best Chinons, Philippe Aliet’s Coteaux du Noiré 02. As soon as I put my nose in the glass, I told myself : “Man, would GV love this wine!” Full of wet earth and dirty veggies, almost no fruit, it was awesome! And I easily guessed the Cab Franc grape and got the appelation too, I was really proud!
Anyhow, keep up the good work!

Props to you G for telling like it is….I could see that you really wanted to like the Larkin….but you kept it real…..Do you think he had to add the Oak due to overripeness or sourcing inferior grapes?

QOTD: We don’t get much CF down here from france….mostly Bordeaux….. but I do have 3 bottles left of the 2005 Frederic Mabileau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Les Rouilleres that I got from WL so perhaps I will pop one soon…….

Hey Madange, it was the Northwest Wine Academy’s 2006. It was a barrel taste. They are about to bottle and we were trying some blends with merlot, petit verdot, and cab sauv. I preferred it 100% cab franc, but they felt people would think it was too funky. I said, “That’s why it’s so goooooood.”

  176. February 13, 2008

Always enjoy the juice from the Loire valley ,, going to get a white and a red to taste .. Will send in the results . Cab Franc is always flying under the radar dude. What a disappointment with the Larkin … Oh well

I have never tried a Loire Valley red , but I would sure like to, I have thus far only had Loire Valley whites. Also, I have not yet tried a Cabernet Franc; I plan to, but I am not sure if it will be this week. I have only had small amounts Cabernet Franc in Bordeaux blends. I usually prefer my red wines blended with at least 3 to 4 different wine varietals and even a small amount of white wine blended with a red. To me it is UTOPIA when the blending is done well.

  181. February 13, 2008

    Tom G of the CKC

I doubt I’ll be hitting the Loire anytime soon as my list of wines to try is already way too large and I’m anal about going through them in order of when I promised myself I’d try them! I’ll add it to the list, though!

  182. February 13, 2008

It’s good to hear that you read comments that come in late. I’m getting behind in my watching, let alone commenting, but I’m hoping to catch up.

I want to like wines that taste like green peppers, because I have acquired a lot of wine (mostly Bordeaux) that has gone in that direction as it has aged, but I can’t seem to get my head around green pepper wine. Maybe I just need to find the right food matches. I did try a green-pepper-tasting Chilean Carmenere with a chicken curry, and that worked surprisingly well.

As far as Loire Cab Francs are concerned, I bought about 3 cases of a Saumur-Chapigny (produced by Thierry Chancelle) for a week-long family reunion last summer, but it wasn’t very popular and I have about a case and a half left. I had tasted it in the store before buying it, and it didn’t strike me as huge-green-pepper at the time, but lately it has been coming off as green pepper reduction sauce.

The Cab Franc that I have liked the most lately has been from Northern Italy, rather than the Loire. The producer is Castelcosa in Venezia Giulia. I have met the owner, Marco Furlan, and he says that Cab Franc is one of his favorite grapes. He makes this one in a way that brings out a black pepper flavor to balance the green pepper, tomato leaf, and tobacco.

Was that a bathtub duck that was squeaking at the beginning of the show?

I had a wine shop/bar close to home that recently went out of business. Now there is no place near home that I can sit down at and enjoy a bottle with friends after work. Granted, there are still several places to buy a few bottles but that place was a favorite of mine.

I went to two placess looking for a Loire Valley Cab Franc but no luck. The ONLY one I found was a Napa ‘03 Carrefour. We quite enjoyed it. The nose was very deep and the initial taste had a lot of red berries and finished off with some slight tannins. Overall enjoyable. Probably not worth the $32 though.

GV – Thanks for this show! I love the poo – so I will revisit these areas. I’ll be in the Fingers this weekend – where the Cab Franc has not, IMO, come around. And I keep trying it – still too green. Yet – I have hope they will get better – so they can add a red to what they do well.

QOTD: I have had Chinon’s before and really do enjoy Cab Franc. I will definitely seek out and enjoy, if not this week, the near future. Wish you had a WL place here in NC.

Anyway, how do wine producers like Larkin think they can charge $60 and compete with the Loire Valley?? Seems a bit arrogant to me. Dont understand. No brainer. 3 bottles vs 1?? Even if the one was decent.

Later. Thanks Gary. And I too am glad you are reading all the comments.

GV, you KNOW I love the “Old World” wines better than the “New World”. I got over my soda pop addiction a long, long, long time ago. Excellent show. I think I am really going to like episodes 401-500! Keep up the great work!!

QOTD: If I cannot get one at the store, I will try one from my cellar. I think I have a couple of different Chinons down there. One from a local shop that I’ve tried and another from WL that I haven’t as yet. So I will in the next few days.

  192. February 13, 2008

Good show. I really love Bourgeuil and Chinon too. Agree completely that the vegetal qualities put a lot of friends off. Have you had Chinon from Domaine du Raifault? They’re excellent.

BTW, have we ever had Bourgeuil or Chinon on free.winelibrary.com?

It must be really tough to score a friend’s wine poorly. I am surprised that you even do it, honestly. If I were in your shoes, I would avoid tasting wines that I wouldn’t want to score badly. In addition, if you were to score it highly, it would be suspect. Seems like a lose-lose. :)

But thanks for doing it anyways. ;)

My 1st Cab Franc was the 2004 Domaine de la Noblaie Chinon ‘Les Chiens-Chien’ which you tasted on WLTV episode #200. Last night I went to a wine tasting featuring Meeker wines from CA. My 1st taste of the night was their Cab Franc. WOW, it was dirty & veggie. Meeker also makes a PV which was not part of the official tasting & didn’t have any there for sale. I told Mr. Meeker about you and your love for PV & that I never have tasted a PV. He said he had PV in his car & brought back two bottles of their ’02 & ’04 PV. What an educational experience for the PAL.
I will check again with our local wine shops to see if they have any Loire Valley reds, otherwise I won’t be able to have one until after I order one.

I tried a Chinon in 2007, after your last Chinon episode. Wasn’t terribly into it, but am definitely willing to give a second try with one of these two. The last Cab Franc that I enjoyed was a wedding gift…Stepping Stone Cab Franc from Cali. If I try another one, I’ll be back to post!

I love Cab Franc, and sadly have not had a Loire CF yet. Try some of the top Walla Walla producers if you want a good new world style Cab Franc, as well as Del Rio and Foris in Southern Oregon. Not oak monsters, and beautiful balance. I WILL go out and buy a Loire valley CF today, just because you got me so pumped up about it, and probably drink with steaks tomorrow for VDay dinner!

QOTD – I definitely accept this assignment. The hunt for a Loire Cab Franc is all the excuse I need to make a little trip down to my favorite wine shop this weekend! And I’ll provide a full report afterwards. Bring on the veggies!!

Gary – Great show today. Don’t let too many of us in on the secret about Cab Franc from the Loire! Next thing you will be telling them about Red Sancerre!!Seriously, you are absolutely dead on with Loire Reds. Wonderful that the two Loire Cab Francs blew away the overpriced Cali Cab Franc.

QOTD: I had a cabernet franc on Monday, but I may break out another this weekend. Drank a: 2002 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses. This was the last bottle of a case I bought a few years ago. Fun to see how this wine evolved with age.

My Tasting Note: Tasty Chinon and a great QPR. A much more balanced wine as it matures. Leather, earthy and red fruit on the nose. Ruby garnet in color and showing signs of age at the rim. On the palate a good bit of red fruit – raspberry, strawberry – and some musky flavors. A medium finish on the medium bodied wine.

I am completely in love with the Loire right now – Borgueil, Chinon, Vouvray, Savennieres – the entire gang, so this show was a blast for me. My regular wine shop is really well stocked in Loire wines, and they happened to have the ‘05 Amirault Borgueil. I split it with some friends after work today, and boy oh boy, was this wine built specifically for me. I agree with Gary – extremely vegetal with a mouthfeel that made me think of tomato flesh and cherry flesh… the chocolate in this tastes akaline, if that makes sense. If there is one thing that Gary could have played up, I think that this was a very well integrated wine, expecially for the complexity. Seek this wine out!

    hey gary;
great show; love!!! loire valley whites and reds (not the sweet ones).
I DID have a Chinon ROSE!!! this weekend; it was on sale, and was spectacular.
very light strawberries in nose and color, but a wonderful smooth flavor profile that went well beyond the nose. exceptional wine. 2004 Droguet chinon rose.
love the show; ordered and had the petite chablis you reviewed; spot on and a huge QPR!

    Hey Gary,

I love Loire reds. Such amazing QPRs. This weekend I’m going to take to our wine meeting a 1997 old vine Bourgueil and a 2005 of the same wine. It’ll be fun to compare and to see a hugely underrepresented region.

Keep it up bringing to us new regions and grapes!

  234. February 14, 2008

    Cyn

QOTD: I Promise to try a Loire red this weekend! Although I’m a bit hesitant since the whole celery, radishes, brussel sprout, funk d’funk (?sp) is weirding me out. I think I’m def a “fruit bomby, new world kind of girl”. BUT – I’m willing to give it a try. Let’s see what I find on my way home tonight…

  235. February 14, 2008

    Mr.Ambassador

    Hey GV,

I promise to try a Cab Franc from the Loire region. To date the only Cab Francs I’ve sampled have all been new world (or part of a blend). I’m doing my best to expand the wine-regions I’m sampling and here’s a great opportunity.

    I’ll report back.

Gary, you forgot Long Island Cabernet Franc! With a lot of 2005’s out there now, and the 2007’s coming soon (both awesome years) you can find some great wine. Pretty much all of them retail under $25 too. I have only had one Loire red, it was a Chinon without much going on. Retailed for about $20, and was a definite pass because it was ultra light in body and aroma. I will seek some more out though. You definitely have me sold on them!

  239. February 14, 2008

    Chippewamike

Well, I found a Cab Franc to try for the first time tonight. I found a 2003 Chinon Baronnie Madeleine. Decanted for about an hour. Tried first glass without any food. Vegetal on the nose and to the taste–funky like you said. Honestly, did not really like it. Then had it with dinner and WOW, this wine does go well with food. My wife really enjoyed the Cab Franc with dinner and without. Always said she had “better taste” then I did ;)
Gary, thanks again for getting us to expand our pals. Did so tonight and was impressed with what we found. My wife, who is very new to wine, said that we found a “keeper”.

qotd: picked up a bottle of 2005 Domaine de la Chanteleuserie Bourgueil Cuvée Alouettes (imported by Kermit Lynch). some veggies on the nose, more classic blue/blackberries otherwise, ridiculous smooth mouthfeel & a kinky chalky finish that i really dig. REDUNKULOUS QPR (for me) at $14 a bottle.

safe to say that i would NOT have thought of trying this w/out your prodding. so, tiresome though it may be for you to hear it over & over again, thank you for helping me expand the boundaries of my wine comfort box. thank you very much.

    Rani Haykal

QOTD (continued from a few days ago): Just opened up a bottle of Domaine du Grand Bouqueteau Chinon 2005 100% Cabernet Franc. Very surprised at how new world this wine is. Not horrible at all, very fruit forward….lots of red cherries and raspberries. Alcohol is integrated very nicely. It feels as if the fruit overpowers it a bit much, which i guess is not bad but i was hoping for a bit more tannins. Finish is nice though….1min+. For a $13 bottle, its not horrible…especially as it tastes like some Napa wines I’ve had for $30-$40. Maybe next time I’ll seek out a bit of a higher quality loire red.

Definitely looking forward to a ‘00 Madiran for tomorrow night. Much more my style with huge tannins. hopefully it opens up a bit though.

I am on board with Gary on this episode. Cab franc is one of my favorite wines. Anyone who loves wine should try it. And I have to ssay I love Gary’s unabashed enthusiasm on this show and how animated and downright hilarious he can be when describing the wines. Great show.

Ok, I love Washington State Cab Franc and have dozens in the cellar but on your word I’m bringing up a 2005 Domaine du Pas St. Martin “Saumur” for this weekend. Vegetables eh? I think I’ll still prefer the dark chocolate and spice of an Owen Sullivan or Barrister Cab Franc, but I’ll give it a shot.

  244. February 15, 2008

    Erik Klumpp

Carbernet Franc is my new favorite wine grape. And I’m not sure why. For some reason I really enjoy the taste. Usually used as a intermediate grape in bordeaux’s Cab Franc carries complexity better than any grape I know. Of course there are exceptions, such as Douro from Portugal. But Cab Franc really has a way of getting your pallet into the earth, smelling all the intricacies that go into wine making. My introduction, for which I am sorry that it wasn’t French, came from a really lovely Napa Valley wine. I have been knocking Napa of late, but god damn this wine is amazing. The nose has hints of cedar, tobacco, and rose petals, with a really nice caramel undertone. The taste is really hard to pin down, and I am still working on it. But I get plums, tobacco, hints of black pepper, and a little oak, which rounds out the wine really nice. My tasting notes are kind of vague, but I really enjoyed it. It definitely was not a cheap bottle of wine, but every once in a while you have to splurg. I think the next time I drink it I will serve it with Short Ribs that are cooked in a chile coffee red wine sauce. Balla Balla Balla. I know. But I just wanted to give you a little insight.

UNBELIEVABLE! I just found a bottle of Yannick Amirault Bourgueil La Coudraye 2003 here in Pakistan !! I’m gonna pop it this weekend. Will let you know how it was.
Also found a 2006 Bouchard Pere & Fils La Vignee Bourgogne Pinot Noir and a 2004 Bonterra Shiraz-Carignane (Cali organic). I’ve never heard of the carignane grape so had to buy it. I’ll likely try that one tonite.

Great mission for the weekend. I’m personally a real fan of Cabernet Franc, even though I’m from England I fell for it through an american wine! Have managed to track down some Yannick Amirault St-Nicolas de Bourgueil for this weekend – a La Mine 2005 and a Les Malgagnes 2005.

“English” green peas – what other sort of green peas are there?

QOTD – Note sure, I do have one C-F about ready for drinking, the Marchesseau Fils 2003 Bourgueil (and another Bourgueil and 2 Chinons for the next 2-3 years) but I’m not really ready for it yet. I’ll try and remember to come back to this ep’ when I do pop it.

I am so there with Cab Franc. The Loire is the Cab Franc capital of the world! I will go out and get a few because that’s what I do anyway, but for you too GV. Cali’s are good I’m not as opposed to a fruit bomb now and then. Usually a Cab Franc is never a BOMB even form Cali. To me Long Island NY Cab Franc’s are the next best thing to the Loire.

  252. February 15, 2008

    Gary,
great episode! Your enthusiasm makes me want to try a Loire valley cab franc again. Previous times it didn’t impress me, but i’ll give it another try. It would be great if you could put one in free shipping.
    Have a good weekend!

Loire reds, always a big hit in this house especially Chinon. Don’t forget all of the great whites of Loire either, the are some of the tastiest of all.

Still can’t figure out why so many American producers of Cab Franc do such a bad job and they sure seem to.

GV-So we are back to report on our Cab Franc tasting. We made a valentines dinner at home and had it with a bottle from Bourgueill 2005 from Yannick Amirault. It was great. It was a little challenged on the nose but it tasted great. What was so amazing was that we loved it more as we kept drinking it. Either it was opening up more or we were “opening” up more. We fought over the last pour but I gave in since it was Valentines Day. Thanks for the recommendation and we will be sure to try more of these wines. In addition we bought a 2005 Cab Franc from California called Franc from M. Cosentino that we are going to try this weekend to do a little old world vs new world.

  256. February 15, 2008

I just tasted my first 100% Cab Franc at a local winery (La Grange) today. Excellent! Very similar to what you describe when tasting the Bourguiel. Dirty dirty veggies and funk. Loved it.

    Paul

GV, must say that I am more a New World kind of drinker, but that could change as I listen to you and try wines from areas like the Loire. Will be searching for one of these on my next trip, and see if my pal can deal with the “funky-funk”. Not an Oak Monster fan, but a little oak is not so bad, for me. Love your excitement and passion. It is contagious. Keep up the good work, you are the leader of the Vayniac nation.

GREAT episode GV! Go back to the New Year’s resolutions and you will se that mine was to try more Loire reds. This weekend had Sauvion Chinon at about $13. Got some of that tomato, celery and prune/plum action. Have at St Nicholas de Bourgeil up next. I have definitely found these wines interesting, stretching my normal list of descriptors, and definitely not favored by the less enthusiatic wine drinkers in the house

Great show, GV. Can’t grab the cab franc this weekend. BUT-I’m heading out to your neck of the woods on 3/1 (first birthday party for my pain in the a$$ brother-in-law’s niece – she’s great-he’s the pain in the a$$), so I’ll definitely be hitting W.L. before heading back to NYC. I have been on the hunt for a good Cab Franc for the past week after watching this episode. Who would have thought finding one under $50 would be so difficult in central Indiana. I’m a big fan of funky wines, so it sounds like some of these wines would be perfect for me.

    Finally!!
A Cab Franc episode. I have to admit I’ve been deleting the feedblitz e-mails cause I have been too busy to watch lately, 110 hrs a week at work. But I am glad I saved this one. One question, what is the deal with the pouring out one for your Homies from the first pour from the first bottle (removing dust, dish detergent???)
The Cab Franc from Virginia wineries noteably Ingleside are excellent, though kinda expensive. I think global warming is improving the terrior in VA (drier). Oh well, sucks for the French. I think I’ll buy some beachfront property in Iceland, Schkoll!!

I didn’t promise to seek out the Loire Valley CF but as luck would have it, we sampled one on Saturday night (my first) at my 30th birthday party. A very good friend of mine (who happens to be a lurker), Zac, flew back home to MN from NYC to help celebrate. While at dinner at a very nice wine bar he suggested ordering up a bottle of a ‘99 Saumur-Champigny specifically because of this episode and many of the 12 at the table had a taste. It wasn’t for everyone (my dad hated it) but he and I agreed it was our wine of the night. Well made, medium body, lots of veggies. A very enjoyable experience. Thanks for bringing the thunder to my birthday, Gary!

ok just tried a a 2005 Sauvion Chinon. 100% cab franc. only like a $10 bottle at the local total wine. distinct green pepper on the nose and even some campfire type smell. noticed the green pepper on the palate along with some minerality maybe. interesting nose and flavor profile. glad i tried and i’d like to try a couple more examples of these but overall im not sure if i like this or not right now.

Sought out a bottle of Loire Valley Amirault Bourgueil La Coudraye 2004. What I enjoyed most about this bottle of wine, besides the nice balance of acidity and tannins, the woodsy, licorice, green veggie taste, and the lingering and surprising minerality; much like the whites I love from Loire, was seeing the surprise on my friend’s face, as he tried to describe the many ways it was different than what he normally drinks. Previously, he would would never shell out $20 dollars a single bottle, but with curiosity he kept asking me where it was from.

I won’t get another one since I have several in the cellar and drink them regularly – not frequently, but on a regular basis. I have some Chinon and Bourgeuil (watch that spelling) and well as a couple from Blackjack Ranch.

    Great show, BTW.

Cab Franc from the US is no comparision to France. Va is the best in the US.

QOTD: Tried one…..you have to give me some credit for trying! Really, cabs are not my thing I’m glad I expanded my palate and added another dimension to it. However, I will try another one or two to make sure ;-)

I had my first Cab Franc last night – a Charles Joguet 2005 Cuvée Terroir Chinon, and it knocked my socks off. Very funky/leafy and inky/dark, and pretty high alchohol (14%) but not in the least bit hot. Excellent wine. Fantastic even!

It brought the funk-da-funk and I loved it (I’m thinking my palate is going way Old World on me – either that, or I need to listen to some more Herbie Hancock). Thanks for turning me onto CF GV!

Only had a few straight cab francs, need to try more. GV I love your honestly, I could tell you were having trouble with what to say about the Larkin and then you stuck with your true feelings. That is why WLTV rocks so hard!! Great show GV!

GV – I am a big fan of the Loire Valley Cab Francs. Even though I am catching up on some old episodes, I am not going to pop one open this weekend because, frankly, I am already sold on these wines.

I have Chinon, Saumur, and Anjou in my cellar taking a rest for a few years before I attack them again.

I love the funky funk. My pal has changed from the Big Bold, New World flavors to the love for the complexity of the wine.

Recently has a Carr Cabernet Franc that ROCKED – can’t remember if it was the ‘04 or ‘05 though. Definitely would like to have more of that around.

I totally agree with you to said that Cab Franc is not for everybody.

Usually the first wines we like is more like kid’s flavours (sugar, vanilla, candy)…and with time we prefer aduld’s flavours in the wines…that’s wath happens to a lot of wine drinker’s. Thats my opinion.

And for the QOTD, I love Cab Franc and just open monday a nice bottle of Domaine Philippe Alliet, Chinon “vieilles vignes” 2005…SUPERB !

Took Gary’s recommendation to expand our palette so yesterday we attended tasting of Loire Valley reds (mostly cab francs) at a local wine shop yesterday.

    Tasted were:
    2006 Malbete, Reuilly Rouge
2005 Domaine Henry Pellé, Menetou-Salon Rouge, Morogues “Les Cris”
    2006 Philippe Alliet, Chinon
2005 Joguet, Chinon, Varennes du Grand Clos
2005 Joguet, Chinon, Clos du Chene Vert
2005 Joguet, Chinon, Clos de la Dioterie

Our faves were the Clos du Chene Vert and Clos de la Dioterie, with Les Cris rounding out our 3 top.

Gotta agree w/ Gary’s description of the cab francs as a “Justice League of America” of funkiness.

I just drove through both the Chinon and Bourgueil areas two weeks ago and must have had a dozen of these – profound wine, and honest as they come.

I came back to watch this episode again and remembered drinking a Domaine Gasnier Chinon Cab Franc soon after. Unfortunately we all were a bit disappointed with the wine. The fruits (sort of like blackberries, but not good ones) were far too forward, and there wasn’t much in the mid-palate to balance it out. But a worthwhile try.

I recently blind tasted a 2005 Domaine Belliviere Rouge-Gorge Pineau d’Aunis (Loire Cab Franc) that absolutely blew my socks off. Brussel Sprouts, Asparagus and black pepper literally climb out of the glass, punch you in the face, steal your wallet, sleep with your woman and kick you in the gut on their way out your front door. It is absolutely awesome. I would love to see Gary review this wine.

Re: Jeff who mentions a Pineau d’aunis.

Pineau d’aunis is a grape. That’s not a cab franc, it’s a Pineau d’aunis. It’s one of the other grapes allowed in most of the Loire apps. You can spot it because it’s a dead ringer for white pepper on the nose. By itself in it’s best expression it can have some nice sour cherry to it with all of that white pepper and floral nose. It’s an excellent food wine.

The grape is used most frequently used as a blending grape with Gamay in the Touraine (Loire app.) If you see tasting notes for a Touraine that indicate a peppery nose, you know you’ve got some Pineau d’aunis in there.

QOTD: I cant promise to buy and drink one this weekend, as I have spent WAYYYYY too much money on wine the past two months in buying vintage wines to cellar for a decade or so. Watching these last 20 episodes or so has given me the idea ( finally?!) to go to my wine shop and drop $80 or so on 5 or 6 wines from all over instead of always grabbing the $$$ stuff. I WILL buy one in the future though.
