    Pinot mania baby!
Thanks Gary for going to oragan. Nice cork goal too! Yeah, still likin that pinot despite all the crap, pinot gris too as an alternative.
Latest was Addamo 2005. Huge nose that would light up your office and thrill Mott on it’s way doing it. There were complex flavors that I’ll let you explain when you taste it; but basically, cherries, strawberries, cedar, flowers, spring, summer, autumn and winter on the farm. Good stuff, funny how it ripped another SB county offering we drank with it that was just about the same price. You never can tell.

Brandon T, rock on, that was cool.

To Orgone homers: Please try some high quality Calif pinots sometime. Cheers

Glad to see some local stuff today. Being a Portlander, Oregon pinot is what I’m most into (it is generally expensive though). Next time you should do some Oregon heavy hitters or cult stuff. Some are- Beaux Freres, Ken Wright, Shea, Hamacher, St Innocent, Dusky Goose, etc… all of which seem to have a healthy amount of ‘buzz’ surrounding them. It would be fun to see how the “top” Oregon pinots hold up on WLTV- maybe in comparison to the “top” California pinots (ie Sea smoke, kosta browne, etc). If you can get your hands on a Thomas pinot I’d love to see that- I’ve heard only outstanding things about Thomas. And the last O pinot I had was a Broadley Shea 06 which was AWESOME!

i am super curious about the oregon pinot. it is something that i look for when i go to the states. the last bottle i had was a domaine drouhin, 2003, inot noir. i opened it for some friends in france that like burgundy. they liked it. it was a little new wave riding the fence on new and old. i liked it too. it was about as much new world as i can take. it was like a burgundy on a little juice.
the last bottle of oregon pinot is evesham wood, cuvee J, 2004. i am going to wait on it a bit. i actually say some oregon pinot in my grocery store in switzerland. i think it was duck pond 04.

    love the oregon pinot shows.

I love your very easy to understand flavor descriptions, the slim jim one is nice…

QOTD: I flew over Oregon once…. No Pinot’s yet though…..

YES!!! Snap into a slim jim!!! I too used to eat about 70 bijillion slim jims an hour. not so much these days though … I decided I wanted to live past 30.

QOTD: Nope not yet, but i definately will try the Chateau Du Slim Jim.

Yup. In fact, I just tasted a horizontal of the 2005 Cristom single vineyards
today. They were great. I liked the Sommners Reserve and the Jessie Vineyard
    in particular.

Great episode Gary, had me laughing.

QOTD: Can’t say I drink much wine from Oregon. And by the way I believe it’s pronounced like Organ or Oregan with the short AN, not actually ON. At least that’s how most people I know in Washington pronounce it.

    Phil M'Glassup

Anybody who knows Phil M’Glassup knows he’s a big Pinot person. But I must say, I’ve had terrible luck with Oregon pinots. Of course, I’m not writing off an entire region, but the ones I’ve picked seem wan and watery and listless, tight with a reticent nose and ungenerous flavors. The worst offender was the ridiculously overhyped 05 Shea Estate which had the unfortunate characteristics I mentioned above. And the bottle costs a ridiculous $50. And I bought two (am looking to rade the other one for a decent burg or Cali pinot). The GrapeRadio guys reviewed this wine and they too were muzzled by the hype, undercriticizing which they also found to be an underwhelming wine.
I am hopeful about the Patricia Green Estate wine I bought from WL but forum users say it needs time so don’t know when I’ll get to it. Don’t want to be disppointed again.
And Happy Valentine’s Day to my beloved Jen Pipes. If you ever get to nyc, I’ve got a big Pinot to share with you. Hmmmm. . .maybe that didn’t come out right.

The big O…that’s all I drink since I saw this movie “Sideways”. haha. I love the Pinot especially those that have plenty of mushrooms and forest up in there. being in Washington doesn’t hurt for the selection. Although I can’t remember the last good one I had? The last three where ho-hum, and I agree with a previous writer: the A to Z wasn’t very memorable.

No Oregon Pinots… yet! Very hard to find here in Ontario…

    Great show (yet again)!

Great episode! I started drinking wine in college. I was in philly and only really knew about california wines from the west coast. I moved to Portalnd after school a few years back and was pleasantly surprised by what bounty this land provides. Someone already mentioned, but yeah Gary, you got it right once in this episode, it’s ORAGYN, like aura – gin (not gin like the drink, like how it should sound, you know what i mean)

QOTD: Like Carl Vidnic, the last Oregon pinot I had was also a Ponzi. Tons of great wines around (and beer, awesome beer), and they sell wine at the grocery stores here, and since all the grocery stores in Portland are silly expensive health food grocery stores, they usually have a pretty nice selection.

    Blessings,
    -Matthew

QOTD: Had a bottle of Erath PN… along with a Majool Date milkshake. Let me tell you, nothing kills a pinot like a freakin’ milkshake. Have fun in Sin City, GV, and if you have a layover in Tucson on your way back, come out to our wine tasting party on Saturday :)

Yes I love Pinot’s and willemette valley is extremely great for them.

Last pinot I drank was super bowl sunday and it was a Domaine Serene Yamhill Cuvee. Not bad pretty tasty indeed.

Oh and how about using my “under the radar” term in your merlot show which was from my very first post regarding another Pinot…. LOL…

Great show as usual Gary. Was just at the WL last weekend. Kudos to one of your guys (wish I remembered his name), who made sure I walked out with about 20 bottles. We just enjoyed the bottle of Caterina Zardini Valpolicella he recommended. Very nice.

QOTD: Just had a bottle of Don Miguel Vineyard Marimar Estate Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Not bad. Not great either but we certainly didn’t throw any away.

QOTD – Yes I drink the Oregon pinots. But that is because I am close enough to make trips down and taste them. Last bottle of OP that I had was a ‘99 Sokol Blosser. Nice wine, still drinking well.

I have to disagree with Gary on the Domaine Coteau cellaring suggestion. I bought a six pack of the ‘01 out of the owners garage when they were first starting out. Here are my notes.
11/4/2007 flawed bottle: DOA. Oh well, was hoping that the last few bottles were just an abberation.
5/20/2006 flawed bottle: Don’t know what is wrong with this but it is undrinkable.
5/20/2006 flawed bottle: Don’t know what’s wrong with this, but has become undrinkable.
10/4/2005 flawed bottle: Cooked. Signs of seepage.
3/25/2005 rated 87 points: Still could use about a year or two in the bottle. Was very harsh upon opening. Settled down after an hour in the decanter. At this point it would be better served as a food wine. Would pair with lamb. Lots of green leafy flavors. Would purchase again.

By the way Gary, you need to do a show on the wines of southern Oregon. Lots of Syrah and Italian varietals coming out of the Rogue River Valley. Great stuff.

QOTD: I’ve been into the big O lately. Lets see, the last one I had was the Montinore Estate. Not great, but very enjoyable to just drink. The price point of Oregon Pinots had been bothering me a little bit, wish they were a better value. Till then…gotta keep hoarding my German Pinot’s!

YO! What’s up with the 87 corks all over the table?

Funny the question of the day was Oregon Pinot because I had a run of the mill shopping market brand, Duck Pond, last night and it was not good. $18 bucks and the whole time I was thinking “man I could do much better then this”. Oh well, if you don’t try everything then you will never know what you might have missed.

I’ve enjoyed oregon pinots not as much as santa barbara pinots and sonoma. what would be especially enjoyable would be if gary had a super cute oregonian female to enthusiastically bang on a gong while imaginary leprechauns squealed with delight to see her slather gary’s bum with the excellent grapes of pinot noir and petit verdot while various metaphorical gods howled in poetic statements of metaphysical truths and they all laugh with superb sexuality?

I’ve got to mix in some Oregon Pinot’s, just like you need to mix in a wardrobe change! Take a page out of Alex Trebek’s book…he rips off 5 shows in a day but always changes his suit. I’m not saying you have to go the Cher route, but c’mon GV…you’re big time baby….switch up the threads!

KUDOS GV!!! QOTD…Answer That’s All with very few exceptions in the USA that I will drink when it comes to Pinot Noir or Pinot Gris it’s all About Oregon. I want to seek out the EIEIO…because I taste about 10 Oregon Pinots a week and so far 2006 Pinots just don’t match up with my Pal…much hotter vintage…higher Alcohol as you experienced with the first 06. 2005 Was for the Oregon Pinot Purist…and on the ones I drink you will smell the Dirt and Mushrooms and find some in the 12.5-13.5 % Alcohol Range. O5 Rocks for Oregon Pinots. The Lachini needs a few years in the cellar. Recently, for me, 2005’s Erath Dundee Hills Estate Selection #99 on Spectators Top 100 For 2007 Right above Caymus 04 Cab. Everyone should seek out Atticus…brand new Winery..two Couples,( one is my friends sister and brother in law) the 05 is great. Tony Soter’s 2005 Beacon Hill, Boedecker 2005 Shea Vineyard, Ponzi Reserve again 05. Lemelson’s Stermer Vineyard 2005 WOW!!… King Estate DOMAINE 2005 13% Alcohol..Certified Organic by Oregon TILTH association..Domaine Drouhin 2005 And Finally Bethel Heights 2005 Flat Block Vineyard..big Wow. Next To French Burgundy it’s all about Primo Pinots From Oregon. Don’t forget to factor in the 75% Rule Doesn’t apply for Oregon when it comes to Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir And Riesling must be 100%. Cali Pinots are mixing in Petite Sirah and Syrah and who knows what else. Pinot Noir also has the highest concentration of Reservatol..powerful antioxicant..and heart healthy compound..so ask yourself you want 100% of that grape or just 75%. California Pinots are Fake, Over Alcoholed and Over-rated. Ooops don’t forget the fabulous Penner-Ash 2005 Pinot..WOWEE. Next time you are walking around Wine Lib or any Wine Shop..Pick up a bottle of Camelot Low End Pinot or Woodbridge by Mondavi Pinot or Redwood Creek. California Wineries…short on quality Pinot Grapes..getting Leftovers from France And Italy and the bottles say bottled by California Winery but a Product Of France and Vin De Pays D’OC on a California Jug of Woodbridge Pinot. OREGON RULES…. and I Love that you mentioned it but when it comes to Cab, Merlot, Syrah and Some Chards it’s still all about Walla Walla And Columbia Valley…Wahington State is Ready To EXPLODE..GET IN NOW!!

Glad to know the middle man strikes again. Cheers to the Big-O!

QOTD: Sure do. In fact I sell EIEIO, but before the thunder show it was hard telling people -hey this is the new hip stuff hipsters-. So last big O Pinot-Cristom Sommer Vineyard Reserve 2005. Earthy, funky, dirty-its the new taste sensation.
