Great episode. Pickle juice worked for the Eagles against Dallas, so why wouldn’t everyone love it?

Damn that Tom’s fast, and the show’s early, a week and a half of missing the Thunder show and I’m almost #1 on my return.

    Happy Valentines day everyone!

Finally! I have been checking in for like 10 times now – wanted to download the episode to my ipod to see it before the evening proceeds… (about 9 pm here in Italy now).
I’m feeling really part of the thunder now (and it’s been only three intense months – two of which with high speed internet!!)

QOTD: Yes, very much! The last one I had was not very good though. It was the 2005 Rex Hill Pinot Noir. Way over-priced.

    Top 10, Happy Valentine’s Day

QOTD – Yes, I drink Pinot Noir, although not as much as I could or maybe should. Last Oregon Pinot was just under a year ago, a basic A to Z P-N. I have an Elk Cove 2004 due for drinking within the next year.

GV feeling a little froggy today?!?
QOTD…..I’ve had maybe 3 pinot noir’s and can’t say that I’ve found one yet that I really liked?

QOTD: I actually just bought a Pinot Noir from Oregon this morning to drink with my husband tonight for Valentines Day (and I hadn’t even seen the show yet…must have WLTV ESP). It’s the 2006 Sipino Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley, and it was a very reasonable price ($14.99) so we’ll see if we’ve found a good Pinot under $20!

QOTD: oh GV, you know how heavy I roll with Ory-gun! and actually, weirdly enough the last Oregon Pinot Noir I had was the ‘06 Domaine Coteau RESERVE. the fruit is a lot more pure on the reserve than the regular brand you tasted, but I kind of prefer the character of the regular to be honest. Both great wines though and the winemaker Dean Sandifer is one of the nicest most down to earth guys I’ve ever met. Everyone seek Domaine Coteau out!

I have a bottle of 2005 King’s Estate Signature Pinot Noir that needs to be opened, possibly tonight. My girl doesn’t drink, so I’m not sure if I’ll bother cracking a $25 bottle.

  25. February 14, 2008

    Ryan D

QotD: The wife and I don’t often get pinot noir, because frankly it’s an easy grape to screw up and we’ve had some pretty bad wines. Oregon pinot noir is, of course, more expensive than your basic PN because it’s, well… GOOD. At any rate, when planning a nice meal calling for pinot noir to be used we decided to splurge and now of course I forget what it was.

  26. February 14, 2008

    Tom T.

I’ve had a few Oregon Pinot’s but cannot remember which ones. Will definitely give some like EIEIO a try. Cool thing with the ESPN mention. Do you see more hits from it?

  27. February 14, 2008

    Fiorentina!

    Hey Gary-
Haven’t had an Oregon PN in awhile…the last one I had was from the Cristom vineyards.
My brotha from another motha, the Oak Monster…that right OM himself…likes alittle OR PN, but not as much as CA Chard or Cab.
PS – Where’s the love on the 120?

  28. February 14, 2008

    Phil G

QOTD – No, I can’t remember the last OPN I’ve had – I just get a feeling that they are overpriced…

  29. February 14, 2008

    sobojosh

QOTD: Love them, better than Russian River Valley IMO. Last one that rocked my socks was 05 Soter.

    DaveyDonut

Woohoo, Oregon Pinot! ;-) A while back you had the Owen Roe Killmore Pinot… I asked for you to taste that when it was in stock, but now you no longer have it! That was great stuff… I was at Lachini thanksgiving weekend and I think I liked the Giselle better than you, but actually found their regular Pinot more “true.” I’ll have to check out the EIEIO… I almost visited them once, but I thought their name was too silly. ;-) Not really…

ONCE in this episode you actually said Oregon correctly! I was so happy! But then about 1.5 seconds later you thought you got it wrong and said it your old, incorrect way again. :-( SO sad…

QOTD: Yes, I like Oregon Pinot. The last one I had was a 1998 Lange Three Hills Cuvée my friend brought over… she stored it in her 80 degree apartment for 8 years, and it tasted like it. Just very muted and over the hill. Bummer.

    David

  31. February 14, 2008

    latraviata

QOTD: Actually, I prefer Merlot a whole lot more than Pinot Noir. Maybe I should make a movie about this! The last Pinot Noir I had that was very good was a French Pinot Noir “La Patriarche” that I purchased in Toronto. La Patriarche was an amazing $10/bottle wine that could have scored in the 90’s, especially the Syrah!!!

  32. February 14, 2008

    J.R. Young

Ore-gun, say it with me. Ore-gun. “Ore” did not go anywhere so it is not “gone”

QOTD: Yes to Oregun Pinot, yes to anything for Shea Vineyard. My last PN from OR was Sine Qua Non from Shea Vineyard (Manfred’s name for it is slipping my right now).

  33. February 14, 2008

    David Masi

YES…throughly enjoy them! Will have a 2003 Beaux Freres 2003 Ribbon Ridge tonight with dinner. Also enjoy Bergstom Pinots as well. What is insane is the Abacela vineyard in Medford Oregon, doing all Spanish varietals. Their Tempranillo and Albarino is better than most of what I have tried from Spain. I beleive as you do that Oregon & Washington are providing the best values on the left coast.

QOTD – If I were to drink an American Pinot, it would be an Oregon Pinot, but I don’t particularly care for Pinot, so it will probably be a while before I drink an Oregon Pinot. Although, come to think of it, the one bottle of wine I brought back from New Zealand was a Marlborough Pinot- very good!

  36. February 14, 2008

QOTD: Last Oregon Pinot was something from Benton Lane.

Hey Gary. Happy Valentine’s Day to WL and all the Vayniacs!

QOTD: I got hooked on Pinot years ago, and all of them were from Oregon. I’ve been trying Pinots from all over lately. The last OR Pinot I had was a 2005 Saintsbury Carneros.

  41. February 14, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

QOTD — no O-Pinots in several years.. While I drink PN, I rarely buy it. If I did, it would likely be from Oregon, though

    “T”

  42. February 14, 2008

    Carl Vidnic

QOD: Yes, love them. Ponzi from Oregon was the last one.
When I drink new world pinot and want to splurge I usually go for one of the limited bottles from Babcock like “Ocean’s Ghost” Santa Barbara.

  43. February 14, 2008

    Shadowbird

    QOTD: Haven’t had any yet.

  44. February 14, 2008

    Happy Valentines Day to everyone!!!

  45. February 14, 2008

QOTD- Yes! I still love Pinot! Even though Hollywood made it damn pricey!

I especially like the Van Duzer (reserve) pinot out of Willamette Valley.

  46. February 14, 2008

    madange

Yes I have tried quite a few Oregon Pinot Noirs. The last one I had was a 2004 Cottonwood Marina Piper that was elegant, feminine, and delicious. That said, I find that Oregon prices have risen faster than their quality and QPR’s are virtually non-existant. Before Sideways, Oregon was one of my favorite places for value driven Pinot Noir of quality. I also think the hype has created a situation where vintages are being sold before the wine is ready. If the winemakers could hold off releasing their wines an extra year or so they would show better. Many of the recent releases I’ve tasted seem tight and/or awkward. Unfortunately, the current market forces them to ship as soon as the latest vintage is bottled. There is also a serious defficiency of vineyards in production relative to the incredible demand for the grapes. Therein lies the dilemma of an Oregon Pinot Noir fan.

  47. February 14, 2008

As an Oregon rez (not from Carlton – there are probably 53 people in the world from Carlton), SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE EUGENEANS!! I drink Oregon Pinot’s on a weekly basis.

My last one was probably an Illahe 2006 Pinot. For 20 bones, an absolute SCREAMING deal.

  48. February 14, 2008

    Patrick

I’ll be looking for these, but it’s difficult here in Kentucky. Maybe if I could order it from the Wine Library! Darned outdated Kentucky laws..

  49. February 14, 2008

    David Dadekian

QOTD: Absolutely. I think a 2005 A to Z Pinot Noir was my last one.

  50. February 14, 2008

    ryang

QOTD: Nope. Not drinking many PN’s at all really.

  51. February 14, 2008

    Taylor

I think that the Lachini has the exact same bottle as the Sea Smoke Ten, that thing has a crazy punt!
QOTD deff, gotta dabble with the O. the last one i tried was A to Z’s liked, I really want to try the Eieio though.

  52. February 14, 2008

    Mike

Being an Oregonian, I drink lots of Oregon pinot. Last bottle was 2006 Klee (by Chris Berg of Racine Winery) around $17 a bottle, but tough to find. As good or better than most $30 O pinots – so much so, that every time I drink it, I’m surprised how good it is . . .

  53. February 14, 2008

    cameron w

Many OR PN over the years. When I lived in Seattle, it was widely available and was also a bargain versus Burgundy. Still have a mixed case or so. I’ve never met an OR PN that wouldn’t benefit from hibernation.

  54. February 14, 2008

    brent

QOTD: O’Reilly’s Pinot Noir… kind of ‘meh… it unfortunately reinforced my opinion of “midrange”, U.S. pinots (aka under 20 clams). Anyone got any suggestions in the 15-30$ range that are “worth it”? The Old MacDonald one sounds interesting though…

  55. February 14, 2008

    Dongbo

QOTD: I’m having one tonight, Patricia Green Estate Old Vine, quite excited.

  56. February 14, 2008

    Henning a.k.a Plastikstuhl

QOTD: Never. I Europe, barely any U.S. wines outside from California seem to be availabe at all.

  57. February 14, 2008

    VinoPhilosopher

After drinking Burgundy, I rarely drink Pinots. A bottle of the Mischeif and Mayhem Burgundy just arrived today–I’ll be looking forward to tasting that.

    Cheers

  58. February 14, 2008

    Cyn

QOTD: Never tasted an Orgeon Pinot. Not a fan of Pinot at all…..they always taste like metal to me (think paper-cut and sucking on the blood). I haven’t been serious about wine for very long, but I have tasted a few Pinot’s and that is not a flavor that appeals to me. I think I’ll a look at the forums and message boards for some suggestions!

  59. February 14, 2008

    Chad

Thanks for the shoutout! You’re the best…
Qotd: I had a wilamet (sp?) valley Pinot hour a few weeks ago at a company party, but I don’t remember the winery.

(ps I sent this from my new iPhone!!)

  60. February 14, 2008

    Brian

Oregon yes. Specifically, two from Domaine Serene, the 2004 & 2005 Evenstead Reserve and the Yamhill. Both very Yummy.

  61. February 14, 2008

    Marc Bienvenue

Yes i drink it. nice and not too strong, La Chèvre noir from bourgogne.

  62. February 14, 2008

    Tom H

QOTD I have had many Oregon Pinots. Last one was 2005 Sineann, very good

  63. February 14, 2008

    Scott EJ

While I generally like Pinot Noir and have way before *the movie* I’ve always leaned towards Central Cali. Coast for them. But, then again, some of my favorite wines are Burgundy Pinots for their earthiness and my pal tells me that Cali. pinots carry that trait moreso than some of the Oregons.

And, like another poster metioned, it seems as if they’re being put out too young just to quell the demand and sadly, I think the quality shows. Most 06’s are coming tasting like Pinot Light and what kills me about that is that they’re still 20 bones and up.

QOTD: 06′ Jigsaw a/k/a another Pinot light.

  64. February 14, 2008

    OregonMike

Gary I’ve always loved the EIEIO brand, gotta try the “Swine Wine” from them with the little piggy on the front!

QOTD – LOVE LOVE LOVE Oregon Pinots, they are what got me into wine! Last one I had was a Lange Winery, and while I think they really bring the thunder for Gris, i LOVED IT (tho I was also at thier kick ass tasting room, so that could have effected it a bit ;) )

  65. February 14, 2008

qotd: foris was the last oregundian i had. i do not partake regularly as i am a french wine junky.

    Obama_Man

I’ve never had an Oregon Pinot, I’ll seek one out though.

  67. February 14, 2008

    JordanW

QOTD: The last Oregon Pinot Noir that I had was called ‘Big Fire’. I rather enjoyed it and it was the first time I have been impressed by a Pinot Noir. We don’t get many Oregon Pinots in Ontario.

  68. February 14, 2008

    Neil

WLTV Take Two: Imagine if you’re driving and hit a deer and then you take out your knife and cut a big whole in it and stuff one dozen long stem roses in and sprinkle chocolate dust over it…..that’s how I’m wishing all Vayniacs a happy V-Day!

QOTD: Not too many Orygone Pinot Noirs. I can’t remember their names and it was at least six years ago or so (long before Sideways) and I felt they weren’t as good as Carneros/Russian River Valley Pinot Noir for the price. After today’s show I’ll give the big O another try.

  69. February 14, 2008

    Joe Po

I’ve had Pinots but they just are not my goblet of vino!

  70. February 14, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: the last pinot I had was the Amisfield (New Zealand). Tonight we’re having the Breggo Anderson Valley pinot and then the Numanthia Termes – both from Wine Library.
We enjoyed a lot of pinots when we were in Oregon (McMinnville) – Torii Mor, Panther Creek, Domaine Serene, Domaine Drouhin, Adslsheim, Penner Ash, Cardwell Hill.
What a nice Valentine image: Bambi’s mother getting hit by a car. I think I know exactly what that smells like. Happy Valentine’s Day.

  71. February 14, 2008

    pawncop

I have not yet had the pleasure of the pinot noir that I can recall. It is on my list of wines to try. There are just too gosh darn many to try at one time. Thanks to you, I will always be able to expand my experience.

I drink some Oregon pinot (last I had was a ‘99 Argyle Rsv), but I like many of the California ones better, even though I live near the Willamette Valley. A Testarossa Rosella’s, Pisoni, or Gary’s really does it for me!

  73. February 14, 2008

    ChiTown

QOTD: I have not, but I am going to seek some out this coming week!

  74. February 14, 2008

    Little Jonny H

Happy Valentines Day, GV -though I don’t think I want you to be mine ;) Anyway, I hope you’re enjoying your time away!

QOTD: I wish that Sideways had never happened. I can’t afford respectable Oregon Pinot because the demand is so high. They’re wonderful food wines, but I just can’t justify buying a pinot for $25 when I can get serious value in spanish and portugese reds for $8-10. The hype is simply ridiculous…

  75. February 14, 2008

    Kirk (AKA: slave2thevine)

Gary…it’s about time…I’ve been waiting for an Oregon Pinot Show since you did the Patty Green show….$h!t. Ok, ok…on with the

QOTD: The last Oregon Pinot I had was the 2006 Bergström. However in the past 45 days I’ve tasted, Beaux Freres, Patricia Green, Shea, Lenne, Adelsheim, Sineann, Chehalem, Rex Hill, Willakenzie Estate, Hamacher, Andrew Rich, Anne Amie, Archery Summit, Argyle, Domaine Drouhin, Tori Moor, and Dobbes Family Vineyard. Oregon is a place that breeds passion in wine for me.

  76. February 14, 2008

    John Farrin

QOTD: Clone 5 is the last one.

  77. February 14, 2008

    Nick

QOTD: I’ve only had one, but it was good.

  78. February 14, 2008

    Matt N.

Although I live in DC right now I am an Oregonian and so have had many Oregon Pinots. With the price they are now I can’t say I drink them very often these days but generally save them for special occasions or if I am out West visiting. The last bottle I had was an ‘05 Panther Creek Willamette Valley that was very solid. I also enjoy Torii Mor, Argyle, and Archery Summit, though Panther Creek tends to be the favorite overall of what I have had.

  79. February 14, 2008

    John W. Taylor

QOTD: The last Oregon Pinot Noir that I had had was an Argyle. It was not great; it was just OK.

  80. February 14, 2008

    Sharon

Happy V-Day, everyone! I had an Oregon PN this past weekend, the Archery Summit Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2006. It was great. I have to say PN is not my fave varietal, though. It’s often kind of sour and thin. But actually my fave PN at that tasting was a German PN, Spatburgunder Rheingau Assmanns Hauser Hollenburg August Kesseler 2001. Wow, that’s a lot to type.. the producer said it was ‘not for the beginner’ but I’m a beginner and I liked it… thought it pretty accessible!

  81. February 14, 2008

    Oregon Jim

Gary! For me? Thanks so much for doing our home stuff! Hey, there are some beautiful things out there, and some OK and some bad. Look back at some good stuff you have tasted from the Big O. Here is a list of some you have not, but is super:

Adelsheim ‘05 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, ‘04 Bethel Heights Casteel, ‘04 Sokel Blosser Dundee, anything Elk Cove, Hamacher, J Christopher, Et Fille, Ken Wright, Francis Tannahill, and Shea to name a few that I love.

If you only try one and think that represents Oregon Pinot, then you are missing out on something very special! Like Burgundy Pinot, you must do some homework to discover that transcendental bottle that will make you a believer.

  82. February 14, 2008

    Vinnie

QOTD: Last Pinot i had was Belle Glos 2004 Taylor Lane. Exceptional

  83. February 14, 2008

    Kev and Ams

QOTD: Wasn’t there an Oregon Pinot in the Thanksgiving pack? I think that was the last O.P. I had.

  84. February 14, 2008

    Deano

Gary good episode I used to love the slim jims too. So that eieio sounds awesome.

    QOTD:
-Nope havent had any oregon pinot noirs

  85. February 14, 2008

    David

Gary, did you tape all the episodes this week on the same day? You seem a bit punchy in this episode – just curious if it’s two hours of taping getting to you!

QOTD: Pretty impossible to get Oregon Pinots in Israel, though I have a bottle from the north of Israel waiting to get cracked!

  86. February 14, 2008

    Chad

QOTD: Erath. I like the both the screw-top and the letter jumble (i.e., heart, earth).

  87. February 14, 2008

    WineMad

QOTD: 2006 Broadley Pinot Noir Claudia’s Choice

  88. February 14, 2008

    AVP

QOTD: No, I don’t – but that ain’t categorical. Oregon PN’s are just almost impossible to come by here in Finland.

Hyvää ystävänpäivää kaikille! Happy V-Day y’all!

  89. February 14, 2008

    BruceP

I drink lots of Oregon Pinot (and Cali Pinot, and Burgundy). Last one I drank I think was a 2002 Cristom Reserve, but it might have been a Broadley. Think it was the Cristom though. Ken Wright and Patricia Green are my favorites.

  90. February 14, 2008

    ChezJosh

2005 Domaine Des Moirots Givry. Like walking through an herb garden that you dumped your spice drawer into.

Immediately preceded by 2005 Domaine Sainte Claire Bourgogne. Borders on the new worldy, but very pleasant, and a great base for Coq au Vin

  91. February 14, 2008

    SoCal

QOTD: I have not yet but I plan on visiting Oregon this year so soon.

  92. February 14, 2008

    Omallley

QOTD: The last (and only) Pinot that I’ve had from Oregon was a Firesteed…perhaps not the best example in terms of what Pinot from Oregon is all about.

I’d love to treat my pal to a Domaine Drouhin sometime…

  93. February 14, 2008

    Withnail

LOL @ “This Lachini’s been around the block.” I can’t believe you said that.
And on Valentine’s Day, no less! You are funny. Cheers to all the Vayniacs.

  94. February 14, 2008

    Panosh

QOTD: Yes, fairly regularly, primarily California.

The last one was a “J”, not sure what year thoguh.

  95. February 14, 2008

    brorjace

The last Oregon Pinot’s I had were the Pat Green line. Before that I had a few bottles of Jigsaw. I like the fact they are not over the top like cali wines, and can actually be used with a meal.

  96. February 14, 2008

Now you’re in my ‘hood. Being a member of the OPNC (Oregon Pinot Noir Club) I have the opportunity to try an amazing number of great Pinots from our beautiful Pacific Northwest.

QOTD: Coincidentally, right now I’m having my one of my monthly selections, an ‘05 Emerson Vineyard Pinot from Willamette Valley. Quite nice though the Amalie Robert I had over the weekend was a stunner. I need to order some of the Big O!

    Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

P.S. I just received a brochure to the DC Intl Food & Wine Festival. Coming? Feb 29-Mar 2

    GV:
Love the Pinot Noir! My favorite has been David Bruce but I want to now track down the Eieo-O! As for tonight in Manhattan, I was out and sought out the Malebec (Argentina) per your last episode and came across a GEM!!! Thank you! Malbec is my new phase and one I am so enjoying it, as is my palate. Of course I am biased as I lived and studied in Argentina and ANYTHING from there is divine..Malbec or Rioja…the South Americans know something!
GV- How do you feel about Grenache? CA Grenache? Santa Barbara Grenache?(2005 La Fond, Santa Rita Hills). I would LOVE to know what your palate says about it. And why is it Grenache in some places and Grenacha in others?
    Best,

I feel bad because I didn’t watch the episode yet, but I am writing a comment. I just haven’t had time, I’m always 2 episodes behind. I watched the Cab Franc one last night.
But I noticed the question of the day was about Oregon Pinot Noir and I got excited because I just had some a couple of nights ago: 2006 Sharecropper’s Oregon Pinot Noir, produced and bottled by Owen Roe. For the most part it was ok, a little too hot, but good.
I did have a weird reaction to it though. After half of a glass I felt like I was having a heart attack, but oh well.
Happy Valentine’s Day everybody. Love yourselves and love eachother.

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: I don’t believe Ive ever had an Oregon Pinot Noir. But then again, I usually dont drink Pinot Noir much at all and if I do, I tend to stick to wines from Burgandy. The few pinot noirs ive had from the US…more specifically California, have not ever really taken my breath away.

I like Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir. The 2004 & 2003 are real standouts! Gary you should try these if you haven’t yet.

Adrian Murrell. He was pretty good for a little while wasn’t he?

QOTD: Drink a lot of OP’s but for some reason, none lately. I think that last one was the basic Adelsheim out at a restaurant, the ‘05 I think.

I’ve totally had some Oregon Pinot, and it was awesome. I can’t remember the name of it, but it was darn tasty. Willamette Valley, totally good, and I even brought a bottle to my Uncle’s house for Christmas.

QOTD: I Only drink PinOt from the big O. Consistent and still earthy almost Old world. With wines, the great out doors, awesome fishing, and Portland music scene, I would live in Oregon if it didn’t rain so damn much.

Would love to see Cali Pinot and Burgs go toe to toe here. Sonoma Coast and Santa Barbra bring some serious thunder.

  110. February 14, 2008

Of course I drink Pinot! Can’t remember one from Oregon, but the last Pinot I had was called Marq I think, from Cali.

    Happy Valentines Everyone! Drink wine!

QOTD: Can’t remember the last Pinot I had…I do love the Pinot…was going to celebrate the festivities tonight with a Pinot, but changed my mind to White Oak’s Cab. I also just acquired a few bottle of Sea Smoke Pinot!!!!! I’m excited!

    Happy V-Day Gary & family!

Good episode. Me too – Slim Jim’s 10 times a week as a kid.

QOTD: 2005 Benton Lane Pinot Noir. Excellent!

QOTD for GV: I can go to the corner wine store and buy a Buffalo Sabres Wine. Has there EVER been a NYJets Wine??

2004 Domaine Drouhin Laurene` Oregon Pinot Noir (65 bones) is awesome!

    winemaker’s notes:
The 2004 Laurène is vibrantly seductive with aromas of fresh cherry & red berry, and a floral mix of cherry blossoms and rose petals. These sensations follow through on the palate, with added clove and spice character. Firm, layered tannins coat the mouth, but the real stars are the rich, velvety touch and well rounded, persistent finish.

    And yeah…it’s like that!

QOTD: having a Lemelson Vineyard, Jerome Reserve, 2003 tonight for VD dinner.

Do like Willamette Valley pinots, but am not convinced make the best Pinots in USA.

QOTD: Last Oregon Pinot we drank was Ken Wright 2001 Freedom Hill-delicious! However, I can’t say enough about a small vineyard from Sonoma that has spectacular Pinot Noirs- Halleck Vineyard. Their Halleck Vineyard Estate Pinot gets raves, but I love love love the Three Sons Cuvee. So beautifully balanced and silky – you have to try. Check them out and tell Jen I said hi! http://www.halleckvineyard.com

Last pino was a Pepperwood. I bought 1/2 case for about the price of the Lachini. Purchased one made in Argentina today, and will, hopefully, enjoy it this weekend. I’m on the east coast, and Oregon is many dollars away. Nice show, and have a happy………………….

QOTD: Being from the west coast, Alaska, I have had ALOT of Oregon wines lately. Most of the restaurants in my town have several Oregon wines available. A couple of popular ones here are Pinot Noir from Domaine Drouhin, Williamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir and Yahill Valley Vineyards.

They hate Californians up their in the “Arkansas of the Northwest” so I boycott all wines from Oregon, good as they may be. California is making some decent Pinot’s in the Carneros and Monterey areas. Slim Jim’s and Peppered Beef Jerkey with an Orange Crush, now that’s a meal.

After your intro, I’m thinking you should quit the wine business and become a pro wrestler announcer, or something.

QOD–Ore’-a-gun pinots have skyrocketed so much in the last few years, I have lost total interest. They are so hot in WA, they are out of stock for quite a few months then released too soon to get back on the shelf.

the last oregon PN I drank was Ken Wright Cellars/Guadalupe Vineyards, 1994.

I tried a rose of Pinot Noir.
2006 Sokol Blosser Dundee Hills Oregon
nose was faint pear and cherry blossom
taste was a little too sweet, so I set it aside, then finished it while eating dark chocolate. WOW! It tastes like chocolate covered cherries. Definitely a dessert wine to go with dark chocolate and it turned out great.

    Carleton, Oregon Pinot Noir:
Having wandered through the area and sampled from pricey to outrageous, we found Monksgate to be a wonderfully flavorful pinot with complex fruit and the funk of a great Burgundy at a reasonable price.

I drink Oregon Pinot Noirs once in a while. I think the last one I had was an A to Z Pinot. OK, nothing special. The one I had before that was much better but I’ve forgotten the winery’s name. The best Oregon Pinot Noir I can recall tasting was from Ponzi.

I’m an Oregonian (and, until now, a lurker!), and I very much enjoy the Oregon Pinots. Its a real trick finding good ones under $20 though, even here. The last one I had was from Lemelson, and it was quite nice. In the past I have enjoyed Pinots from Van Duzer, Owen Roe, and Sokol Blosser. I just picked up a bottle of J. Christopher’s “Zoot Allures,” which I have heard good things about and am hoping will fill that sub-$20 Pinot hole.

Gary, I’m digging the Oregon love! Thanks for helping spread the word on some juice that the Portland Area is so proud of.

QOTD: I definately collect big O pinots, The last ones I had (big O tasting) were: Beaux Freres ribbon ridge, Bryce ribbon ridge, Benton Lane first class, Ken Wright McCrone and Rocco private stash all 05’s. All awesome I would say pass on the Benton Lane.

  137. February 14, 2008

QOTD: Bruno 2006 Pinot Noir – Small run made for a restaurant that went under by Evesham Wood. Unfiltered, great QPR @ $18. I buy mainly OR PN. I search for issues not exported out of the big O.

    Hey Gary,

Love the old school WWF references. Macho Man Savage today and I could swear you referenced Hacksaw Jim Duggin a few shows ago. Good stuff. But the best tasting note I think I’ve heard anywhere was when you were talking about the Loire Cab Franc’s and described the “Justice League of Vegetables”! That was totally classic! Can’t get the image of a brussell sprout with a cape out of my head! Keep up the good work. QOTD – unfortunately have not had an Oregon PN recently.

  139. February 14, 2008

QOTD: From what I can remember (which really means, from what I can look up in CellarTracker), I have not had any Oregon Pinot Noir. My favorite this year was the Ancien 2002, which my dad got from a friend. It was really nice with some RC cola finish.

You seemed to not like the cola in the last wine, is that not a flavor that your pal is down with?

Your tasting notes on the Ei-Ei-O sounded really good. I’m a sucker for mouthfeel.

Gary, You crack me up, it is ore-gun not gone. Love the big O pinots but they have accelerated in price so much the last couple years they are no longer a good QPR. Last one I bought and drank was a 2004 Benton Lane. Solid wine but nothing to write home about.

  145. February 14, 2008

    Dr. G

Great show GV!! Personally, I like many of the pinots I’ve tasted. In fact, it was the pinot noir grape that my dad used to draw me away from clarets and towards trying other grapes when I first started tasting wine 15 years ago.

QOTD: They had one from Oregon at our local wine shop for tasting just about a year ago. . .I do recall liking it – too bad I lost my little notebook from that time and I can’t remember the name :-(

Gary, repeat after me– ORE-uh-gun. Emphasis on the first syllable. Final syllable is like the thing you shoot, not the past tense of “to go”. Just ask Kellen. He’ll explain it to you.

Now that we’ve got THAT out of the way . . .

QOTD: I do drink Oregon pinots. Gotta support the neighbors to the south. My go to Oregon PN is Cloudline. It’s good and usually under $20. Love it with salmon.

Nice descriptions today GV. Hope your trip is going well.

QOTD: Yes, I’ve had the O pinot noir. I can’t remember the name of the producer, but we had it on wine by the glass a couple of weeks ago at work. It’s good, although I’m not the biggest fan of pinot noir. If anything, give me the funk de funk from France that’s 100% pinot.

The bunt comment “Its been around the block”. I don’t know if anyone got onto that but my wife and I in mild disgusts and laughter, laughed our heads off.
Also just coming back from France, Côte d’Or I’m confident in saying the States and Tasmanaia, Australia are making the best Pinot going around at the moment. The best bang for buck.

I love new world PINOT! never had a chance to taste an Oregon one, though!! I just checked our online alcohol monopole in Quebec (SAQ) and they’ve only 2 Pinot noirs from Oregon: Domaine Drouhin Orégon 2005 (40$) and Pinot noir Beaux Frères Yamhill County Orégon 2000 (221$). Obviously I am thinking of the Drouhin one. “WA” rates it 90 pts! Do you think it’s worth the 40 bones? Cheers

Oregone??? Hey Gary, it’s Oregun. Repeat after me, Oregun. Not Oregone. Yes, I do live in Oregone, so I do drink the local wine. La Bete’ is a small producer but highly recommended. Wilikenzie is also doing good stuff lately at a reasonable price. Most of the wine is overpriced for the quality but no surprise there eh? I did try, drinking the Cab Franc you recommended, huge tannins, crazy high acid, well structured. All in all a good bottle of wine for $15.00.

Glad to know the middle man strikes again. Cheers to the Big-O!

QOTD: Sure do. In fact I sell EIEIO, but before the thunder show it was hard telling people -hey this is the new hip stuff hipsters-. So last big O Pinot-Cristom Sommer Vineyard Reserve 2005. Earthy, funky, dirty-its the new taste sensation.

KUDOS GV!!! QOTD…Answer That’s All with very few exceptions in the USA that I will drink when it comes to Pinot Noir or Pinot Gris it’s all About Oregon. I want to seek out the EIEIO…because I taste about 10 Oregon Pinots a week and so far 2006 Pinots just don’t match up with my Pal…much hotter vintage…higher Alcohol as you experienced with the first 06. 2005 Was for the Oregon Pinot Purist…and on the ones I drink you will smell the Dirt and Mushrooms and find some in the 12.5-13.5 % Alcohol Range. O5 Rocks for Oregon Pinots. The Lachini needs a few years in the cellar. Recently, for me, 2005’s Erath Dundee Hills Estate Selection #99 on Spectators Top 100 For 2007 Right above Caymus 04 Cab. Everyone should seek out Atticus…brand new Winery..two Couples,( one is my friends sister and brother in law) the 05 is great. Tony Soter’s 2005 Beacon Hill, Boedecker 2005 Shea Vineyard, Ponzi Reserve again 05. Lemelson’s Stermer Vineyard 2005 WOW!!… King Estate DOMAINE 2005 13% Alcohol..Certified Organic by Oregon TILTH association..Domaine Drouhin 2005 And Finally Bethel Heights 2005 Flat Block Vineyard..big Wow. Next To French Burgundy it’s all about Primo Pinots From Oregon. Don’t forget to factor in the 75% Rule Doesn’t apply for Oregon when it comes to Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir And Riesling must be 100%. Cali Pinots are mixing in Petite Sirah and Syrah and who knows what else. Pinot Noir also has the highest concentration of Reservatol..powerful antioxicant..and heart healthy compound..so ask yourself you want 100% of that grape or just 75%. California Pinots are Fake, Over Alcoholed and Over-rated. Ooops don’t forget the fabulous Penner-Ash 2005 Pinot..WOWEE. Next time you are walking around Wine Lib or any Wine Shop..Pick up a bottle of Camelot Low End Pinot or Woodbridge by Mondavi Pinot or Redwood Creek. California Wineries…short on quality Pinot Grapes..getting Leftovers from France And Italy and the bottles say bottled by California Winery but a Product Of France and Vin De Pays D’OC on a California Jug of Woodbridge Pinot. OREGON RULES…. and I Love that you mentioned it but when it comes to Cab, Merlot, Syrah and Some Chards it’s still all about Walla Walla And Columbia Valley…Wahington State is Ready To EXPLODE..GET IN NOW!!

I’ve got to mix in some Oregon Pinot’s, just like you need to mix in a wardrobe change! Take a page out of Alex Trebek’s book…he rips off 5 shows in a day but always changes his suit. I’m not saying you have to go the Cher route, but c’mon GV…you’re big time baby….switch up the threads!

I’ve enjoyed oregon pinots not as much as santa barbara pinots and sonoma. what would be especially enjoyable would be if gary had a super cute oregonian female to enthusiastically bang on a gong while imaginary leprechauns squealed with delight to see her slather gary’s bum with the excellent grapes of pinot noir and petit verdot while various metaphorical gods howled in poetic statements of metaphysical truths and they all laugh with superb sexuality?

Funny the question of the day was Oregon Pinot because I had a run of the mill shopping market brand, Duck Pond, last night and it was not good. $18 bucks and the whole time I was thinking “man I could do much better then this”. Oh well, if you don’t try everything then you will never know what you might have missed.

QOTD: I’ve been into the big O lately. Lets see, the last one I had was the Montinore Estate. Not great, but very enjoyable to just drink. The price point of Oregon Pinots had been bothering me a little bit, wish they were a better value. Till then…gotta keep hoarding my German Pinot’s!

QOTD – Yes I drink the Oregon pinots. But that is because I am close enough to make trips down and taste them. Last bottle of OP that I had was a ‘99 Sokol Blosser. Nice wine, still drinking well.

I have to disagree with Gary on the Domaine Coteau cellaring suggestion. I bought a six pack of the ‘01 out of the owners garage when they were first starting out. Here are my notes.
11/4/2007 flawed bottle: DOA. Oh well, was hoping that the last few bottles were just an abberation.
5/20/2006 flawed bottle: Don’t know what is wrong with this but it is undrinkable.
5/20/2006 flawed bottle: Don’t know what’s wrong with this, but has become undrinkable.
10/4/2005 flawed bottle: Cooked. Signs of seepage.
3/25/2005 rated 87 points: Still could use about a year or two in the bottle. Was very harsh upon opening. Settled down after an hour in the decanter. At this point it would be better served as a food wine. Would pair with lamb. Lots of green leafy flavors. Would purchase again.

By the way Gary, you need to do a show on the wines of southern Oregon. Lots of Syrah and Italian varietals coming out of the Rogue River Valley. Great stuff.

Great show as usual Gary. Was just at the WL last weekend. Kudos to one of your guys (wish I remembered his name), who made sure I walked out with about 20 bottles. We just enjoyed the bottle of Caterina Zardini Valpolicella he recommended. Very nice.

QOTD: Just had a bottle of Don Miguel Vineyard Marimar Estate Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Not bad. Not great either but we certainly didn’t throw any away.

Yes I love Pinot’s and willemette valley is extremely great for them.

Last pinot I drank was super bowl sunday and it was a Domaine Serene Yamhill Cuvee. Not bad pretty tasty indeed.

Oh and how about using my “under the radar” term in your merlot show which was from my very first post regarding another Pinot…. LOL…

QOTD: Had a bottle of Erath PN… along with a Majool Date milkshake. Let me tell you, nothing kills a pinot like a freakin’ milkshake. Have fun in Sin City, GV, and if you have a layover in Tucson on your way back, come out to our wine tasting party on Saturday :)

Great episode! I started drinking wine in college. I was in philly and only really knew about california wines from the west coast. I moved to Portalnd after school a few years back and was pleasantly surprised by what bounty this land provides. Someone already mentioned, but yeah Gary, you got it right once in this episode, it’s ORAGYN, like aura – gin (not gin like the drink, like how it should sound, you know what i mean)

QOTD: Like Carl Vidnic, the last Oregon pinot I had was also a Ponzi. Tons of great wines around (and beer, awesome beer), and they sell wine at the grocery stores here, and since all the grocery stores in Portland are silly expensive health food grocery stores, they usually have a pretty nice selection.

    Blessings,
    -Matthew

No Oregon Pinots… yet! Very hard to find here in Ontario…

    Great show (yet again)!

The big O…that’s all I drink since I saw this movie “Sideways”. haha. I love the Pinot especially those that have plenty of mushrooms and forest up in there. being in Washington doesn’t hurt for the selection. Although I can’t remember the last good one I had? The last three where ho-hum, and I agree with a previous writer: the A to Z wasn’t very memorable.

    Phil M'Glassup

Anybody who knows Phil M’Glassup knows he’s a big Pinot person. But I must say, I’ve had terrible luck with Oregon pinots. Of course, I’m not writing off an entire region, but the ones I’ve picked seem wan and watery and listless, tight with a reticent nose and ungenerous flavors. The worst offender was the ridiculously overhyped 05 Shea Estate which had the unfortunate characteristics I mentioned above. And the bottle costs a ridiculous $50. And I bought two (am looking to rade the other one for a decent burg or Cali pinot). The GrapeRadio guys reviewed this wine and they too were muzzled by the hype, undercriticizing which they also found to be an underwhelming wine.
I am hopeful about the Patricia Green Estate wine I bought from WL but forum users say it needs time so don’t know when I’ll get to it. Don’t want to be disppointed again.
And Happy Valentine’s Day to my beloved Jen Pipes. If you ever get to nyc, I’ve got a big Pinot to share with you. Hmmmm. . .maybe that didn’t come out right.

Great episode Gary, had me laughing.

QOTD: Can’t say I drink much wine from Oregon. And by the way I believe it’s pronounced like Organ or Oregan with the short AN, not actually ON. At least that’s how most people I know in Washington pronounce it.

i am super curious about the oregon pinot. it is something that i look for when i go to the states. the last bottle i had was a domaine drouhin, 2003, inot noir. i opened it for some friends in france that like burgundy. they liked it. it was a little new wave riding the fence on new and old. i liked it too. it was about as much new world as i can take. it was like a burgundy on a little juice.
the last bottle of oregon pinot is evesham wood, cuvee J, 2004. i am going to wait on it a bit. i actually say some oregon pinot in my grocery store in switzerland. i think it was duck pond 04.

    love the oregon pinot shows.

Glad to see some local stuff today. Being a Portlander, Oregon pinot is what I’m most into (it is generally expensive though). Next time you should do some Oregon heavy hitters or cult stuff. Some are- Beaux Freres, Ken Wright, Shea, Hamacher, St Innocent, Dusky Goose, etc… all of which seem to have a healthy amount of ‘buzz’ surrounding them. It would be fun to see how the “top” Oregon pinots hold up on WLTV- maybe in comparison to the “top” California pinots (ie Sea smoke, kosta browne, etc). If you can get your hands on a Thomas pinot I’d love to see that- I’ve heard only outstanding things about Thomas. And the last O pinot I had was a Broadley Shea 06 which was AWESOME!

    Pinot mania baby!
Thanks Gary for going to oragan. Nice cork goal too! Yeah, still likin that pinot despite all the crap, pinot gris too as an alternative.
Latest was Addamo 2005. Huge nose that would light up your office and thrill Mott on it’s way doing it. There were complex flavors that I’ll let you explain when you taste it; but basically, cherries, strawberries, cedar, flowers, spring, summer, autumn and winter on the farm. Good stuff, funny how it ripped another SB county offering we drank with it that was just about the same price. You never can tell.

Brandon T, rock on, that was cool.

To Orgone homers: Please try some high quality Calif pinots sometime. Cheers

I used to love pinot, but have been having trouble finding one I like lately…maybe it’s be evolving PAL! Anyway, no OR ones lately, but just yesterday I tasted a local pinot that reeked of twizzlers…the winemaker wasn’t quite sure how to handle that descriptor.

QOTD: Yes, I drink more Oregon Pinot Noir than any other kind of wine these days. The last bottle I had was last night, and was the 1997 Thomas. I gave it 90-91 points, and found it perfectly mature with powerful tart dark cherry nose and flavors, along with a touch of minerality and meatiness. Thomas Pinot Noirs have a very small production and are hard to find….almost impossible outside Oregon, but are highly regarded by Oregonians, including the winemakers there. I fell in love with Oregon pinots at the International Pinot Noir Celebration some 19 years ago, and have been a serious collector of them ever since. By the way, I highly recommend the International Pinot Noir Celebration in McMinneville, Oregon, as one of the best wine/food events in the world. I have been 11 times, and am headed back this year.

QOTD- The last pinot from Oregon I had was DePonte, probably the reason for that is because it is my family’s winery. Being as objective as I can be it is solid Oregon pinot and could stand up to any of big boys around here (Oregon). We have a 2 pinot noirs all estate fruit (1200-1500 cases $34), and a Family reserve (150 cases $58) would love to have you try them Gary, let me know if you are interested. Ironically I am not really a pinot guy (get a lot of crap from my family about that), it is way down my list of favorite varietals but I think we are doing it the right way here in Oregon, we have a French winemaker that studied in Burgundy with the Drouhins (Domaine Drouhin by the way is our next door neighbor at the winery and vineyard) we also have the oldest muscadet vines in Oregon and make a couple hundred cases of a white wine we call Melon, hope this doesn’t sound like an advertisement. Be came a Vayniac only four or five months ago amd can’t wait to wear the wine library wrist band at our next big tasting event (I always get to pour the our best wine during those events). I have been a wine geek for 20+ years, have a massive cellar and am having more fun and enjoyment with and because of wine now than I ever have, I am sure you have something to do with that enjoyment.

love Pinot; but mostly Burgundian old world style. There are 2 producers I LOVE from Russian River Valley as well; small boutique winerys with families and GREAT people—Davis Family and Holdredge—they both make Pinots with a little new world pop, but very defined balance in the fruit and acidity-all that is right about Pinot! The last one I had was an 2005 Davis Family that was spectacular. thanks for the show!

A day late, but wanted to comment. I look for Oregon Pinot Noirs since having a good Ponzi 10-12 years ago. Siduri is good most years as well. The Oregon Pinot’s seem to have more complexity and balance than most California Pinot’s. Oh yeah, woo-hoo, top 250.

QOTD – I am kind of biased as I live in the Rogue Valley in good old Southwest Oregon. I have had numerous Pinot Noirs from different producers in both the Rogue and Willamette valleys. Many of the wineries in S. Oregon are small compred to those in the Willamette Valley. In my opinion some of the small producers here are putting up high quality Pinot Noir. My favorite Pino Noir that I have had recently is from a small producer called Wooldridge Creek Vineyards in Applegate, OR. As I have mentioned before we hope to have a Pinot Gris ready for market sometime this summer, with 24 different grape varieties available for blends in the next 2 years.

The last Pinot Noir I had was from Sineann. They are a small producer of highly intense wine in Yamhill County, Oregon. The owner and wine maker,Peter Rosback, took us through his place and we sampled all of the different Pinots. The fruit is sourced from some of the best vineyards in the the Willamette Valley and the Hood River Valley. He’s a great guy, fervent in all he does, and opened his small winery to us like we were old friends. He spares no expense in the pursuit of great wine. Crop levels are kept very low, one to three tons per acre. The flavor is intense. They really care and strive to make great wine. As Peter has said many times, “It’s the only kind of wine that makes it onto our dinner table. It’s exciting to make and gratifying to share. We believe that food and drink, lovingly prepared, make for happier and healthier people.” Rosebeck also partners sometimes with the Owen Roe Winery (remember Sinister Hand) for some neat events. He makes world class wines, worthy to seek out.

Love, Love, Love the Pinot Noir!!! But you can’t touch them price-wise since that dang movie came out. Finding a value Pinot is getting harder and harder. Believe it or not, the Greg Norman is becoming my go-to Pinot at $16/$17.

Favorites of all time: Elizabeth Spencer E/S Label 2004 (Napa), Babcock “Rita’s Earth” Cuvee 2004 (Lompoc/Santa Barbara), and White Mare (Chile). The last Oregon Pinot I had was a Benton Lane 2005, and it was very yummy.

Last great Oregonian Pinot I had was the Belle Vallee Reserve 2005 37 bones. I was fortunate enough to go through Belle Vallee’s entire portfolio with Gabe McGee associate winemaker and son of vineyard owner. One of my first forays into serious wines was a trip through the Willamette Valley in ‘96. We were tasting the 1994s – a great vintage for Oregon Pinots. I remember thinking “Now I understand why people get so crazy about wine.” Over the years my favorites have been Erath and Sokol Blosser.

I very much enjoy Oregon Pinot. I think the last one I had was Lily, which you tasted recently and enjoyed. In 2004 during a visit to Willamette I tasted the EIEIO at a wine store. The guy working there gave us a tasting of a wine he said he made and it was very good. I took a bottle home and enjoyed it. The guy said his name was McDonald, hence the name EIEIO. It was fun to see it on WLTV and brought back great memories of my trip to Oregon. I need to go back.

QOTD. I love good Oregon Pinot Noir, but I find that there is a steep increase in quality that starts around $40, and that’s more than I can spend on a regular basis. The ones in the $20 neighborhood can be ok, but not all that impressive. Probably the last one I had was A to Z, which is in the not-bad-but-not-impressive category.

Shout out from the Coast Range!
I know you’re just pushing our buttons with the whole “Orygone” thing but it’s pronounced “Lakeeni”. We tasted through their wines about five years ago. Nice folks. We have a magnum of theirs in the closet and I actually CAN fit my head in the punt! I wear it around the house until my wife makes me take it off.

QOTD: Quite often but really, heroin would be cheaper. Last one was Carlo & Julian Estate 2005. It’s a house favorite but hard to find outside the ‘hood. Big fans of Boedecker Cellars and DePonte too.

Your question of the day brought me out from lurkerland.

I grew up in Oregon (would you like a knife, or-a-gun?) and have mad love for Oregon pinots. My favs are Domaine Serene (pricey), King Estate, Erath and Stoller vineyards.

  253. February 16, 2008

    andrew

Last Oregon Pinot Noir: Domaine Serene 2003. Love it.

  254. February 16, 2008

    DonnaWat

Rex Hill 2003 or 2004 (I forget). I was wonderful. My sis gave it for Christmas, we loved it so much that we had our fav liquor store owner buy one for us & my bro-in-law bought it out from under us (surprise!) for Thanksgiving. It was funny (but perhaps you had to be there).

  255. February 16, 2008

    Jaybird

I was rollin’ after you put your fingers in Lanchini’s punt, great metaphor about being around the block!
Last Pinot was a 2005 Hamacher, which was surprisingly more like a burgundian Pinot then an Oregon.

  256. February 16, 2008

    Canadian Chris

QOTD: no big “O” pinots, only rolled into Niagara PNs. Checking out burgs and other pinots now.

  257. February 16, 2008

    John from Allentown

QOTD: Last Oregon pinot I tried was from Witness Tree – 2005 Benchmark which was excellent. There is a rich silky quality with their pinots that are just wonderful.

  258. February 16, 2008

    Mia

QOTD: I happen to be drinking a Vital 2005(that I purchased at the big WL) while watching this episode. I get a smoky, cherry sniffy-sniff….not bad for $20 bones.

  259. February 16, 2008

    laurie in VT

Loved Mott having the last word(s)!

QOTD: I have not had PN from Oregon. But it is now on my list of must buys.

  260. February 16, 2008

    Paul

Good Show, and have enjoyed some PNs in the past, but “Sideways” has driven the price for quality wines above my daily budget. Loved the tasting notes on EIEIO, so will be looking for that one in the local stores.

  261. February 16, 2008

    glenn

Joe Cortez reference and the Macho Man imitation – way well done due, i want more Randy Savage time man on WLTV- makes for a great episode.

QotD: Domaine Serene most recently but i bought Prive, Beaux Freres and Patty Green from the 06 vintage.

  262. February 17, 2008

    Moonsshyne

QOTD: Never had an Oregon PN. Great show!

  263. February 17, 2008

    NB_SPAZZ

QOTD: Next time we have friends over we’ll be trying 3 Willamette Valley, ORYGUN wines – a Montinore Estate Pinot Noir, as well as a pinot gris and a riesling from other wineries. Since our aim is to to sample $20 and under bottles, the EIEIO won’t make the list (though the “Ol’ McMott Had A Farm” line was almost enough to offset the $9 extra). Maybe we’ll buy a few Slim Jims as stand-ins.

  264. February 17, 2008

    Jason Baer

Our preferred local shop is big into the Oregon PNs, so we’ve had AtoZ, Elk Cove, Chehelam, Erath and a couple others. Usually find them to be in the 87-89 range, which isn’t mind-blowing, but a pretty good QPR for Pinot these days.

  265. February 17, 2008

    organicmexican

QOTD…We do drink them occasionally (~1X/month) and we look for Oregon or Washington St., but there are much better values out there that keeps us away from Pinots. Its hard to buy a $30 bottle of Pinot when you can find a wine with similar body that will knock your socks off at less than half the price. Very difficult to find a value driven Pinot.

  266. February 17, 2008

    BW

QOTD: Love the Oregon Pinot’s. My folk live there, so we tend to get to do some wine tours there at least once a year. Last one we had was the Rex Hill Chehalem Mtns Cuvee Pinot – it was very good. Just bought some “Jigsaw” Pinot from Oregon – have had friends say it is an exceptional value

  267. February 17, 2008

    JayZee

QOTD: The most recent Oregon Pinot Noir we had was a 2005 Penner-Ash Dussin Vineyard PN and it was very, very good. Definitely more New World then Burgundian, but I still liked it quite a bit. I gave it 91 points.

  268. February 17, 2008

    paul

QOTD: Most recent OPN was an ‘05 Patty Green. Glad I have more.

    lincoln williams

    2005 Soter from yamhill! delicious!

  270. February 17, 2008

    GalvezGuy

QOTD: Last Oregon Pinot I had was Domaine Serene Evenstad 2002. I really liked it but thought that there were a lot better offerings out there for the same or less money. Patricia Green comes to mind first. Not drinking as much Pinto as I used (but still buying the same ratio compated to others). I like my Pinots with a little age where they show that earthy character.

  271. February 17, 2008

    DARREL LAS VEGAS

QOTD: Shea cellars & Skol Blosser

  272. February 17, 2008

    DT

QOTD: Most recently had a Shea 2005 – not bad, but not earth shattering either. Hard to beat Penner Ash for a generally available, consistently good effort year after year, although not cheap either.

what up from oreGUN…..you should have contacted me if you were going to try pinot’s from oreGUN….I would have gotten you the hoooook up…. last one I drank was from St. Innocent White Rose 2003…the slut of all pinots, one of the best I ever had, it was the last bottle in the cellar and I finally tasted the dill pickles…never had before. a shout out to the two other pinots that I had not from oreGUN…Breggo, and Lily. you had them both on your show and they are awesome as well. great work. peace from oreGUN.

QOTD. I had the Owen Roe Sharecroppers. I have found that Owen Roe has consistently good wines. Hey Gary…did you have fun in Boston?

  276. February 18, 2008

    ScottB

Yep, I drink Oregon pinots. The last one I had was from Et Fille, which was 1 of a flight of Pinots I had at a wine bar in the OC, Cali. I remember it being my favorite of the 3.

  277. February 18, 2008

Great ep G ….. Been to Oregon , the Pinot is great. QOTD— Drank a 2003 Hamacher Pinot Noir Oregon ( Luisa Ponzi’s husband) …. he makes better wine than Ponzi…………..I can hear the thunder

Yes!! Love Oregon Pinot Noirs! Favorites are Patricia Green, Ken Wright, Penner Ash, Cristom, Doumaine Drouhin, Lemelson, J Albin….

I definitely drink the Pinot’s from Oregon – I had an Argyle “Nuthouse” now too long ago – nice!

    Mr.Ambassador

    Hey again GV,

Living here in Washington State there’s Oregon Pinot Noir aplenty – and I’m drinking it! Last Pinot Noir tasted was Domaine Serene and Eola Hills. I’ve been having fun sampling Sonoma to Central-Coast Cali. Pinot Noir beside Oregon Pinot Noir and looking for the similarities and differences.

    Thanks again!

  281. February 19, 2008

    Jus in WA

Dude…. Oregon sounds like ‘tommy gun,’ not ‘tarragon.’ Other than that, awesome show! The NW rocks Oregon Pinot for days, so I suck it down like nobody’s business. The last really tasty one I had was the 05 Domaine Serene Yamhill Cuvee; that stuff is delicious. PS: Do another Chateauneuf-du-Pape episode!

  282. February 19, 2008

    chris the greek

The last Oregon pinot i had was the Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir made by Véronique Drouhin. With her Burgundy background it was typical in style with a bit more fruit coming through. Closed at first but opened up brilliantly in the glass.
Thanks to Gary at the Arkle, a one star restaurant here in Chester, for the recomendation (check his blog out, grazzac.blogspot.com)
We almost listed the Duck Pond Pinot Noir but unfortunatly the QPR was not too good. You guys keep the best for yourselves in the USA and make it hard for us Brits to find attractivly priced wines over here.

Fancy shipping to the UK Gary???

QOTD: Do I drink Big O Pinots? You bet – but the prices keep climbing. Got a whole theory I’ll discuss with you later on that.
Rather ironic that the “old world” Pinot seemed to have the most “new world” character according to your comments. I loved Pinot Before Sideways (BS); honest! To clarify, I like Burgundy. The movie and you have opened my horizons to new world Pinots.
    Thanks for the tips!

Firesteed was the last that I had, they have a $13 bottle and then one that’s around $20, they’re both great for the price.

None so far but on my list to try.

GV – I am a big fan of the Big “O” pinots. I traveled to Oregon in December on business and tasted wines at several of the wineries.

Here is what I have drank recently, and not so recently:
    - Ken Wright Cellars – several single vineyard bottlings in my cellar
    - Fiddlehead Cellars – she makes one from Willamette
    - Amity Cellars
    - Firesteed
    - Duck Pond
    - Domaine Drouhin
    - Argyle

Like ‘em a lot, but they are getting pricey!

QOTD: I hail from BC in Canada, so I tend to drink BC Pinots, which are easily as good, perhaps even better, than Oregon. BC has it’s hot Okanagon wines, but there are a lot of cool microclimates in BC too.

  292. February 24, 2008

    gpete

Loved Cheery Hill and Four Graces. As for BC they are not there yet, BC is BS when it comes to Pinot Noir.

  293. February 26, 2008

    Andrew

    Hey Gary

    Thanks for a good show

QOTD: NO. Living in Hong Kong the avalability isn’t there and I tend to find the price of US wines is often pretty high for the value you get.

    Cheers Andrew

g, yes, i LOVE PN from Oregon and Washington. around christmas time i got some Carlton Hill 2005 PN, and it was fabulous. different, sour cherries and plummy. recently tried a Yamhill Valley PN from 2004, same thing, a bit tart on the tongue, great nose, good finish. but my favorite PNs so far has been the Road’s End and Carter Vineyard, both from 2005. the perfect blend of fruit and earth, nose and mouth that made me go WOW ! i really like finding rare, small vineyard juices, and these are just that. they are between 40 and 50 bones, but totally worth the trouble and time to find it, and get it.

  295. February 26, 2008

    BobWied

Living in Portland, and only minutes from the Willamette Valley, I’d have to admit it was Oregon Pinots that converted me over from mostly drinking beer (although we’ve got some awesome micro-brews here as well). With close to 400 wineries in the state, it’s really hard to chose favorites. In fact, I prefer to go to new wineries each time I run out. There’s so many great ones to try (but they’re unfortunatley getting pricey). Oops, what am I saying…Oregon Pinots…yuk…

Always glad to see some local wines for me (I live in Portland, OR).

I’m definitely going to look for the eieiO around town.

QOTD: Argyle pinot was the last one I had when I was back in Cali. There are darn near impossible to find here in Burgundy. Not that I need to look for other pinot’s to drink while I am here.

  301. February 28, 2008

    C-BusWineMofo

QOTD – YES, YES, my wife and I went to the Big O and found some amazing Pinots. Just drive around and talk to the locals about who is making good wine and if you have to drive on a dirt road while dodgeing livestock to get to the winery, your on the right track.

I’ve had the 2002 EIEIO cuvee I in Feb. what a monster! The bouquet comes up and punches you in the nose. The fruit is so up front and finsihes off like velvet. It drank so easliy. Just had the Domaine Serene 2004 from the Williamte Valley I should have decanted it still the greatness of this came through real subtle. And if you can get your hands of a Firestead what a bargin from OR.

I have more unopened bottles of PinOt at home than anything else, just haven’t been drinking much of it lately. Last was probably a Sonoma Coast bottle from Seghesio at a dinner party.

I can’t get over the bottle I had last December, Domaine Carneros Avant Garde (year?), very memorable!

The Seahawks are my “New York Jets.” Heres to hoping they have the sense to draft a QB with the #4? pick. I love Matt, but his age/injuries leave me concerned and I dont think Seneca is going to be a QB that can take a team to the playoffs. Better to draft a good QB now and develop him even as a backup then try to find one in two years or so when you need one for SURE. Jeez I can ramble…. Meat wine!? YES!! I actually like that meaty smell in a wine. And man oh man did I eat those Oh Boy Oberto beef sticks when I was younger. Beef and pork hearts with nitrates? GIMMIE! QOTD: Ive had a few, but cant remember the last one I had. Paired it with some chocolate cake though. Pretty good combo.
