Have you tried Blue Newt Wine from the Red Newt Cellars? It’s interesting on the nose, sweet and simple. I drank it when I was in Schenectady, NY. Here’s a link to purchase it: http://tinyurl.com/28alzx Their main site is http://rednewt.com/web/

Enjoy. Keep up the good episodes!

There is nothing wrong with a pre-emptive rinsy rinse. And yews I have been trying wines that were normally outside my box.

I’ve been expanding my pallet as much as I can. I’m heading like 40 miles this weekend to try a Cote Rotie as part of a tasting just because I’ve wanted to try one for so long and I’ve not been able to (a true Cote Rotie, not an Australian Shiraz/Viognier blend). I’ve also tried Bonarda, Semillion, and Barbera d’Asti recently.

I have NEVER had a NY wine! This edpisode might be a decent place to start but I don’t drink a ton of white at this time of the year (and being from Seattle, have a lot of choices locally).

QOTD: YES! That is my goal this year to expand my pal!!
Tasted a wonderful Merlot/Cab Franc the other night believe it or not and I’m not a big Merlot fan at all! Also an Albarino and a dry Reisling from Isreal. At least it was Kosher!!

Last wine I had from NY was an Eiswein Wine from Nigara Falls area – long time ago though haven’t ventured in that territory in awhile.

Liked the shirt all the way tucked in…half and half makes you look like you don’t give a damn….old fashioned I guess!!

Gary, you’re awesome for showing NY wines! You can’t go wrong with NY riesling or gewurz, esp from Wiemer! Thanks!

    QOTD:
Question #1:Yes, I’ve been trying to try new things! On Valentine’s day we went out to dinner and I tried a Ripasso, and LOVED it. it was a great recommendation from our waiter and I’ll definitely try another when I see one.
Question #2: The last NY state wine I had was yesterday (I live here, so most of the wine I have is NY). My bf and I had a lovely bottle of Seneca Shores Royal Red, which was delish!

Great show today gary! Way to show some NY love!

Good job on this episode. I gave my local (Crafton, PA) state store ‘Wine and spirits’ a call to ask if I could find either of these selections. Of course I was almost naive to think I might be able to.

Great to see wine’s highlighted from New York state. I was in the finger lakes region 2 years ago for a vacation and didn’t realize they had such a variety of wines coming from there.

Definitely going to try to get one of those bottles to have with the next dinner with friends.

We’re definitely trying new wines since watching WLTV!

QOTD: God, have I ever. This year I’ve jumped into Spanish wines with Rioja’s, Alberino’s. I’ve also tried several white Bordeaux’s that I never would have tried a year ago. I just had my first Granache, a Sancere, and am getting ready to try a Chianti classico (after having tried a jug wine chianti years ago and vowing to never touch it again).

    Thanks, Gary.

    Gary,
I have posted here once or twice, but I tend to be one of te lurkers you are shouting about. Anyway, I decided to come out from behind the curtains for a little bit today. To start, this was a great episode, but I have to correct you on two things. First, I think that Long Island has been consistently been putting out nice wines for some time now [BTW, I am glad you commented on the Cab Francs, because it is a wine one hears little about as a stand-alone, but the LI wineries are putting out some nice ones--I used to think of them as the poor man's Cab, but the prices are rising. Second, NY is the home to the Jets, but they are, more specifically, based down here on, you guessed it, Long Island. They are not anywhere near theFinger Lakes. So how about some more LI wine tasting.
Now I just to comment on a couple of old shows [I can't watch everuday, so I'm trying to get intermittent new episodes and catch up on your shows starting at the beginning]. The episode with your nephew was great. Besides the wine aspects, I love the relationships in your family, and as a Boston U grad [undergrad and med school], I liked hearing that AJ is currently a student there. I also like when you try to look and the lower priced wines. I would suggest you try the Concha y Toro [Xplorador level] Cabernet and Malbec. I have particularly liked the Cab at that price level, but I haven’t been able to find it for a while.
QOTD 1=I have been working on expanding my palatefrom the time I started tasting wine. Except for a few wines I might get for house wine type drinking in case I have guests or just want something basic, I don’t have the time, budget, or experience to keep having the same wine over and over.
QOTD 2=An Osprey Dominion spiced wine. Not my favorite, but it had been on my small rack a couple of years [most of my wines last a couple of months, an I think this had passed its prime, but I hadn't had the opportunity to drink it for a while and I couldn't throw it away], and you asked for our ‘last’ NYS wine.

Just got back from The Brotherhood Winery and Warwick Valley Winery yesterday. I gotta say – my favorite dry reisling is the 2005 vintage from The Brotherhood. I bought the 2006 recently and didn’t enjoy it as much so when I was there yesterday and found 11 bottles of the ‘05, I bought them all.

Warwick Valley had a great Black Dirt Red this past year but unfortunately, they sold out. They should have their next batch available in April.

I dig the NY State wineries because they are close to Hoboken and offer some pretty good wines for those of us who can’t stomach another glass of Yellow Tail but are looking for affordable wines to drink on a regular basis. I’m surprised more restaurants in Hoboken don’t serve NY wines. I did have a glass of Alba Wineries (NJ/PA border) raspberry dessert wine at Amanda’s last night which was good. I hope to see more East Coast wines on lists in the area.

Hi GV, Great show! I love New York State wines and was thrilled to see some on your show. The last NYS wine I recently tasted was Thirty Mile Point Crackling Sweet Catawba from Schulze Vineyards.

    Gary,

Loved this episode. Most peeps don’t know our back yard has some great wines. And, I did it…I linked you up…I have had a blog for a while and I write now and then but watching you now everyday I have turned the corner from the lurker to the full fledged vayniac. Damn. I never thought it would come to this. So, right on, Mr. GV. I am beholden to the power of the grape and your irreverent approach (and nose) to it.

QOTD : tried a new Ribera del duero last week – Tinto Pesquera – that was tasty ! Also have a new Gruner & Argentinian Torrontes on the way from WL.

QOTD2: Don’t think I have even seen a NY wine in CO, let alone tasted one

Not much NY wine makes it to Hawaii or any that I know of.

Great show and thanks for sticking in there.

The most recent NY wine I have had was an 02 Dr. Frank dry Riesling. It held up pretty well although I prefer NY Rieslings in their youth. The 02 had the classic petrol nose and there was still a hint of minerality that I get from Dr. Frank wines, but the fruit was all gone.

Thanks, Gary for giving props to Riesling. Too many people overlook the grape because of prior misconceptions often rooted in sugary Blue Nun swill.
