I don’t know if I have ever had a wine from New York State. Living in Washington state gives me so many opportunities for great wine from the West Coast. I have had the pleasure of visiting wineries in Washington and Oregon, at these wineries I have had some Lemberger’s, Dolcetto’s, and many other little known (to me) grapes. I say this to answer the first question of the day. I tell you, the Lemberger was very different, and I don’t feel the need to seek it out again.

Thanks for all you do for us Vayniacs Gary.

QOTD: can’t quite remember though I’ve had quite a few from NY. I do recall Finger Lakes and Niagra (Buffalo) regions leaving a positive impression for Reislings and icewines.
Yea, I tasted your Christmas pack with Mom in front of your video and she complained about you “wasting” wine. I defended you because personally, I rinse glasses out with wine instead of water. I’m a huge fan of exploring and love the Gewurz; thanks for tasting one. Interesting to hear you rave about it next to a Reisling when you’ve always been such a fan of the latter. Guess it’s all about quality. You need one of those blinking red lights like the Hollywood soundstages to avoid interruptions. On the other hand you strike me as one of those “open door” guys who wants to stay in touch with the workforce.
    Nice ep as always.

    Wine Not?

Expanding the palate…..well, I tried a pinot noir that was, well, blanc! True enough, I was at a tasting this weekend where they were pouring a white pinot noir from Germany….very interesting…

QOTD: Funny you should ask! I just got back from a weekend in NYC (I yelled a “hello” in the westerly direction to you, Gary…did you hear me?)and visited Vintage New York in Soho and tasted TONS of New York wines! I’d recommend this place to anyone…they treat you very well there! I personally enjoyed the Long Island wines more, but my friend really grooved on the Finger Lakes offerings. In any case, we both LOVED the blueberry port that we finished with….Finger Lakes, I think????

Never had a NY state wine but with my Grandpa being a New Yorker the next time i am over, will seek some out. Finding one will be kinda hard over here in the UK.
It is his fault i am a massive Jets and Yankees fan. Watch the Brick become the best LT in the NFL and Joba, Hughes, Kennedy and Wang will hurl us to the world series.
Gotta love MLB.com live streaming baseball, it’s the reason i get no sleep whilst the season is on.

I really enjoy Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Rkatsitelli. Burst of flavor in the mouth! We visit relatives every few years in Finger Lakes. Atwater Estate doing a decent dry red blend.

Correction: the rieslings I had were from Kings Ferry Winery, not Kings Point.

    Sorry about that.

    Hi Gary,

Great to see wines from the Finger Lakes area. I live just south of there.

QOTD: the last wines I had from the FL were Treleaven (Kings Point) Rieslings, both the dry and semi-dry.

Feel like I have to do Long Island a bigger shout out as most of the comments are about the Finger Lakes. Besides Channing Daughters, Wolffer and Duck Walk have some decent wines in the Hamptons.

It may be a hipster ploy, but Brooklyn also just got Winery in Greenpoint. Haven’t had the wines yet, but I’ve seen them in the stores already.

Channing Daughters’ Cuvee Tropical is one of my favorite summer whites, especially with any spicy food.

GV – Just got back from the Fingers so I’ve just had a bunch! Juliana and I go every year – and the whites are getting better, slowly. The reds still have a long way to go – but I was actually surprised by some Cab Franc this year (and haven’t in the past). Concentrated on Seneca Lake this year – with the standouts being Standing Stone, Red Newt and Atwater. Ice Wines were good as well.

QOTD: Sorry GV, never had a NY wine, though I have had some Northern PA wines, erie area. Nothing that has ever wowed me, but decent.

    Gary,

Since you said no matter how long after the episode you read the posts, I’ll leave this one. I’ve had a number of NYS wines, going back as far as 1980. Have had Dr. Frank’s wines, Heron Hill – good whites, Bully Hill and others. Most recently I drank a Cab Franc from Anthony Road Winery in NYS. I had bought it at the Union Square Farmers Market in NYC several months ago, but popped it after watching your WLTV episode on CFs. Even from NYS, that CF had all the characteristics you talked about. NYS has come a long way since 1980 and is worth checking out.

Hey Gary, lay off the Mottman! As someone who shares that last name, I can confirm that we’ve heard “hey applesauce” more times than you’ve done shows.

Yes, I’m on a mission to expand my pallet. Thank you Gary for often pointing out wines I’ve never heard from. I recently went on a white wine kick. I started out just wanting to drink something lighter, but after awhile I had a hard time going back to reds. On this same note, I was very surprised to see how many people hadn’t tried Pinot Noirs a few episodes back. I would’ve thought that would be in regular heavy rotation for almost everyone. Especially if you live in Washington or California.

    GV,
We have a cottage in Western NY around Chautauqua Lake. I have always wanted to try a good wine from the region, but did not know which one to try. I now know I have to try the Gewurz. Thanks!

    Great episode!!!

QOTD 2: I love Casa Larga Vineyards Wine. They had an ice wine that’d blow your mind. I went to school at the Rochester Institute of Technology and they were down the road.

QOTD1: Ya got me explorin’ da Old World Wines of France (Bordeaux,
    Burgundy, Provence, Languedoc, etc.) again.

QOTD2: Had one, maybe two, NY wines about a Gazillion (+/- a decade)
years ago……….Dat Gewurtz sounded pretty good…………..

Don’t remember ever having any wines from New York State.

I’ve expanded my pallette lately by trying my first Alsace Gewurtz. It was pretty good! I am planning on trying more.

QOTD: I had a Dolce Bianco from a NY Finger Lake Winery and it was really good; Nice pinapple undertones!

QOTD#2: I don’t think I’ve ever had a NY wine. I’d love to try one and have been keeping my eyes open for Finger Lake area wines, but so far no luck out here on the west coast. :(

QOTD: Always expanding and trying new things! In fact, this weekend we had a Georgian wine for the very first time. Quite good — N.V. Kindzmarauli JSC Alazanis Valley Kindzmarauli.

QOTD #1: Yes I have been making a weekly effort to expand my palate. I tried a Sicilian white last night- blend of Insolia and Chard. I have been tring to get a little more info on Insolia (sometimes spelled Inzolia) but haven’t had much luck. Any info from you?

QOTD #2: I visited several Finger Lakes wineries on our annual NC reunion trip in 2003. I had a wine that was a life changer (maybe a little delayed) Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Rkatsiteli. It was like lemon meets strawberry starburst explosion with a finish that seriously lasted >5 minutes! Alas,
I haven’t had a NY state wine since that experience, gotta break that streak!

    Hi Gary,

You probably noticed that I haven’t been leaving comments as much but my grandmother recently passed away so I had to see to that. I haven’t had any New York wines as I am not from N.Y. but next time I will check for some at the S.A.Q., I am not sure we have them in Montreal but it’s good that you brought to our attention wines that go well with thai and or spicy food as our generation seems to be into that these days, keep it up ! :)
