QOTD: I think it was something on a wine tour at Bully Hill. The wine was horrible, but the entertainment at the tour was terrific. OK, sorry, I was a beer drinker back then, and my PAL wasn’t trained to try new things. GV has changed my life!

just had the 2 wines side-by-side. have the riesling FIRST and it will blow you away. The gewurzt. is a touch sweeter and has a bit more acidity.

QOTD: I’m really enjoying trying different varietals. You’ve given me the confidence (and some knowledge) to do so.

QOTD 2: At winter break, as a Christmas present, my wonderful CKC son who goes to school in Ithaca brought home the Riesling you weren’t so keen on today. Not meh to me…Mmmm.

QOTD 1: Yes I have been trying new things and expanding my palette (my pal) since becoming part of the vayner nation.
QOTD 2: No, I have never had a NY State Wines, but I plan on trying some.

QOTD #2: can’t think of any I’ve ever had. if I ever saw one on a list in CA, I’d try for sure. will have to seek something out – maybe this Gewurtz.

I am ashamed to say it…but the only wine I can remember having from NY was some Lake Niagara. It may have even come out of a box.

    Your a noble warrior G-Man.

QOTD1:Washington state rieslings, now thats pushin’ it.

QOTD2: Lamoreaux Landing red blend. It was not good. No, not good. However I have some Hermann Weimer Riesling in the cave, aging out for a rainy day. 06’s are way too young from the Hermann-miester.

Never tried any NY wines before. Here in Cali I’m sure they would call that an import.

The NY Finger Lakes are new on me and can’t remember ever having New York wine in TX. Thanks for expanding my Mind and my Pal, GV. I’ll start looking for it.

    Happy Friday!!!
QOTD 1- yes, I have been trying new things pretty much since I joined the Vaynernation
QOTD 2- I don’t believe I have tried anything from NY state, I will add it to my list of wines to try.

I need to find a nice Gahverts this weekend. Good show. And yes, you get 15 emails but I hear 15 mins of “why does he waste that wine”? So maybe pre-rinse and have a separate glass for each?

Pre QOTD: I’m trying to expand my PAL so much I keep track so I can become a member of the Centurion Club. Let’s try some off-the-wall (good album) varietals so I can add to my list? :)

Post QOTD: Nope, no NY wines for me though I must say they are hard to find at most wine shops. There was a great show on “fine living” by Andrea Zimmer showcasing that region.

    Cheers!

Had a fantastic Torrontes the other day – at room temperature, amazing! and nowhere near as good cold. Obviously the St-Nicholas de Bourgeil planned for the weekend and A really unexpected, sumptuously magnificant Spanish Sardon De Duero 2004 – ALL wines I would not normally have gone for previously.

QOTD- Never had one. Never even seen one when I’ve been looking at Rieslings etc.

This week,I had two wines from Pellegrini Vineyards – a 2002 Encore Red Wine(blend of, I believe Cabernet, Merlot and some Cab Franc) and a bottle of Finale the desert wine.
I also had an Ice Wine from the Swedish Hill Winery up in the Finger Lakes that was unbelievable! It was a ten year old vintage that had smelled of roses, peaches, pineapples, honey and a hint of gasoline fumes. And all of this was on the palate. It was thick and luscious and I am glad my wife forgot I had this one bottle left or it never would have seen its tenth birthday ( it would have been lucky to make it to three!)

QOTD: I’m waiting for free shipping to order a New York wine or two from you.
Everyone liked the Breggo pinot last night, but not so much the Termes tempranillo. It was probably a little young.
I kind of like the assymetrical shirttail look – just don’t make it look too studied.

Lot’s of different Malbecs and Torrentes’ from Argentina. Also some Italian. As far as New York wines…….not much. Tried a couple of sparkling wines a few years back, and really wasn’t impressed. That surprised me, as I am easily impressed.

I ADORE HERMANN, and Fred & the Finger Lakes! I love them so much I HAD to work at Wiemer’s place for a harvest season; literally heaven on earth. His Gewurztraminer was my instant favorite. The 2002 Cab Franc was magnificent and most recently I had to crack open the 1999 Cuvee Brut; simply classic and classy! Gotta love his ice wine too…
I work with wines in Arkansas now we must get some NY State wines down here!
Great choices Gary; you made my day!

  24. February 15, 2008

    Thanks to our Vets!

QOTD 1: I’ve only been serious about wine drinking for about 2 months. The entire world is new to me, baby!

QOTD 2: New York? That’s like, north of Pennsylvania, right?

  25. February 15, 2008

    Sue Z.

Thanks for the NY Finger Lakes experience GV!!! I’ve been going up there for about 5 or 6 years now and the rieslings, gewertz, and ice wines kick some serious ass!! I can’t wait to try the ‘07 wines this fall.
QOD – Torrontes, Alberino, and I just picked up some white Cote de Rhone……..keep it rollin bro;-)
