Will Gary please fill a hot tub with petit verdot grapes and jump in with a pretty model and they slather buttocks while laughing and reciting poems?

  2. February 18, 2008

    Brady B

I second Brandon T’s idea. Perhaps some string chamber music in the background as well.

I’ll look for some St Aubin as homework for this week. I am guessing from the show that you would conisder this a red drinkers white?

    Thanks again.

Never had a St Aubin white Burgundy …. need to get into old world whites with some many great flavors & smells (sniffy sniff). I guess we are just stuck with Cali Chards always forget the old world whites baby!

Gooood show! Stellar chards and no, never heard of St Aubin. I learn something every day.

St Aubin is fantastic wine at a great price point. Glad you featured it. I had my first St Aubin at B&G Oyster in Boston and I still remember how knocked out I was by it!

Yo Yo Yo….thanks for the heads up on the St Aubin. My wife will love me dropping $50 on a white. Only 4,998 until I reach my Facebook limit!!!

My QOTD: Why do people care so much about getting in the top 10 of the quotes for the day?

I’m ordering a few, because I’m devoting my next month of purchasing to only chardonnays from around the world – trying to expand my palate through a single grape type (at least for the next 30 days)! I’ll be in the Outer Banks in a month and I’ll be getting some delicious off-season fresh fish:

White burgundy + dungeness crab = crustacexplosion in my mouth.

QOTD: I’m not waiting. I have a bottle of the Girardin in my cart.

  20. February 18, 2008

QOTD….I’m trying to imagine me shelling out 47 bones on a white wine and somehow I just can’t.

    Kirk (AKA: slave2thevine)

We have the 02′ Leflaive St. Aubin on our list and I sold about two cases of it last summer. It can be an amazing wine for a killer value when you find the right bottles. Great show….great topics…

  23. February 18, 2008

    Skol

Hey I am one of those wine nerds that was hoping you would not talk about St. Aubin. I actually bought a case of the 2005 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin La Princee.

BTW I disagree with 2004 not being great for white Burgundy. I think they are much more lean and classic not as fruit driven as the 2005. But that is my opinion.

Great show, but stop letting too many people know about the hidden gems in Burgundy.

QOTD. I have had St. Aubin’s, but not many and not often. I do like that smokey thing that some of them have. Actually, I’ve had a puzzling experience with some smokey white wines. I try them at tastings, and get all the smoke. I buy them, take them home, pop them, and no smoke. This has happened to me maybe a half dozen times. I don’t generally decant white wines. Is that the problem, do you think?

  33. February 18, 2008

    Gersh

Gary has heard of more than two buttons, but choses to ignore them. Also, never been impressed with a white wine. Part of that is an unwillingness to go into (much) higher price points in general but also a reluctance to buy a whole bottle of something that my pal has told me i don’t like. I try and drink white when i go out and can get just a glass, but have yet to find something I really like.

    Great show Gary, thanks

  54. February 18, 2008

    Chris

QOTD- my lack of knowledge about French wine, and French wine regions is holding me back from trying these. Based on your tasting notes though, the second one is the only one that I would really like from today’s episode.

  55. February 18, 2008

    spaetm

QOTD – Haven’t had one. I’m being held back by finances and poor selection at liquor stores in the area. I should move somewhere closer to new jersey.

I love white burgundy, and have for a decade. The 95’s were killer good! I picked a few up last year, cellaring again. Oh yeah, thanks a lot Gary for telling everyone!

I think Gary tasted too many in that same shirt – marathon of tastings for us while he was away….

Slurring a bit on the start on the 3rd bottle and what’s with the itchy itch under the shirt ? and the unbuttoned spot mid shirt….falling apart GV down the stretch – hope to see you back new and fresh soon, tomorrow ? And no: “MOTT link it up”s ?

QOTD: Never even heard of St Aubin’s ….will add it to the ever growing list

  60. February 18, 2008

    Len

    Gary,
Interesting episode…I don’t drink much white wines and when I do it’s usually in the summer. I’ve noticed you don’t mentioned if you can cellar the wine if you don’t get to it right away. In any case, I never had a St. Aubin but will try at some point…in the past, I never bought anything produced in France for personal reasons especially when you can get very good wines here…the prices on some of their wines put me off as well…QOTD..what’s holding me back….Lent, gave up drinking wine but will definitely try the last two wines from this episode.

  61. February 18, 2008

    BF

Never tried one, but it’s now on the short list. Just had my first white bordeaux a few weeks ago…

  62. February 18, 2008

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

I have actually seen these in my local wine shop but never really mustered the courage to get one to try…mainly because the few that the shop has are in the $35-50 price point, which at the moment tends to be a bit high for a bottle of white wine now, especially when I still have 10 or 12 bottles left of random sauv blancs and pinot blancs I purchased at the end of last year.

QOTD: What am I waiting for? Once I finish off some of my hard exams coming up and have a weekend to actually relax, I will splurge a little and seek out a St. Aubin.

  63. February 18, 2008

    LIttle Jonny H

What am I waiting for? I’m waiting decent white burgundy -or any other chardonnay for that matter- to cost less than $15! In other words, it’ll be a few years before I buy a bottle. Especially considering the other less-concocted whites that can be had from NZ and South America for ~$10

  64. February 18, 2008

    SoCal

QOTD: I will seek one out this summer…this month has been costly already……

  65. February 18, 2008

    Tooch

    hey gary -

good episode! I’ve never tried one of these, but will be seeking them out in the near future. gotta save some bones to get that last bottle, but it sounded like it was well worth it.

  66. February 18, 2008

    Obama_Man

    Awesome episode, GV!

QOTD: I’ll look out for a St. Aubin for sure. I’m hoping they’re readily available at local stores.

  67. February 18, 2008

    amgryger

I will have to look for these wines. I have a lot of trouble finding chardonnay that I like at prices I’m willing to pay because I usually find them to be disgustingly over the top or too austere. These sound like a good middle ground.

  68. February 18, 2008

    PhilB

    GREAT ep GV!
Man, that sure was a secret a lot of people didn’t want out! I love St-Aubin too…. The best I had was also from Hubert Lamy, but from the En Rémilly parcel… Just mind blowing! Let’s remember here that, just as GV said, this AOC is right next to the more prestigious ones of Chassagne and Puligny, but this particular parcel of En Rémilly is located right next, I mean RIGHT next to the Grand Cru of Chevalier-Montrachet that goes for well over 100 euros/bottle! Don’t miss out on these wines Vayniacs!
PS: But be careful, they’re not all good… I bought a 1er cru from an unknown producer and even in the fabulous 2005 vintage, it was nothing exceptional… Stick with the big names producer-wise…

    PhilB

  69. February 18, 2008

    J Hartfiel

Good evening Mr. GV. Thanks for another remember-able epsd of WLTV. Have not had any wine from St. Aubin. I have mentioned in the past that I am starting to get into whites more and more, but still have not had a Chard that my pal has agreed with. Have to wait this one out, but am looking forward to trying others like Torrontes. You made big claims that it was going to be a big upcoming wine…

    Thanks GV

  70. February 18, 2008

    NB_SPAZZ

QOTD: Not ready for $30-$50 St Aubins yet. Spending the wine budget on sampling a wider spectrum of under $20s first, in order to “calibrate the pal”. Actually, looking to assemble a trio of chards to sample – 1 unoaked (4 Vines Naked?), 1 butter bandit + oak monster victim, and one with the oak in balance.

  71. February 18, 2008

    KyleLikesTies

I have to agree with NB_SPAZZ: I don’t have that kind of budget. I’d rather have good wine with dinner nightly than great wine once or twice a week.

  72. February 18, 2008

    AVP

I’ve had some St. Aubin and a few years back, I bought my mother a nice bottle of St. Aubin for Mother’s Day. Well she got mixed up with bottles and used it in a pasta sauce (fortunately not entirely, so that she did get to taste it and loved it ).. And the sauce came up delicious.

Hey, if the shirt’s bugging you that much, take it off. Take it all off. With Noxzema Medicated shaving cream!
Er, I’ll look out for St. Aubin white burgandy/chard ! Esp. that middle one!

  74. February 18, 2008

    jason

great way to start out the week. love the bourgogne blanc.

QOTD. i have my little stash of white burgundy downstairs. the last few i have had has been a little to stoney for me and i wanted a little more fruit. i consider myself a rock licker but… anyhow, i have had whines from giradin, but mostly reds and they have been OK. he is a negotiant that has been on the way up. last year, had a 1999 lamy, st. aubin and it was great. it was the wine that started me on white burgs. yum. anyhow, what is stopping me is that i live in switzerland and they make boat loads of white, so they do a good job keeping a lot of other’s wine out.
ps, 2005 is a great year, and you tapped it for a sec. all of the burg guys pan the 05 whites and say that it was too hot for the whites and that 04 and 06 will bring more to the table with the tension.

  75. February 18, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Haven’t tried one but just ordered 3 bottles based on that great review. Sounds better than the $60 Ramey my wife makes me buy.

  76. February 18, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: in a word: freeshipping. You could select a different state every week to get free shipping and start with New Mexico.
Apple dumplings are even better than baked apples.

  77. February 18, 2008

    LarryTheWineGuy

I think the Pricing Issues that are posted on the Comments here are unjustified. Yes these wines are expensive…but not when you compare them with a Puligny Montrachet or Chassagne or Corton Charlamagne…it’s like half the price. GV I have had the 2005 Hubert Lamay…and not only was a 2005 Burgundy White Or Red a Fantastic Vintage like Willamette Valley Oregon sharing the 45th degree Parallel with Burgundy France…but maybe it was the atmosphere when you had the 2001 Lamay because to me the 05 and My PAL says this is MONEY . Applewood Smoked Bacon, Beautiful Balance…nothing California could ever produce nor sadly Washington State….This is White Burgundy in a little hidden spot at it’s Finest…at Upper End California Fake ,Over Oaked Fruit Bomb Chardonnay Prices. Great Show GV..All Vayniacs should Seek out this Lamay!!!

  78. February 18, 2008

    KenP

    Wonderful ep.

  79. February 18, 2008

On Second Thought Taste This Lamay against $45 A Bottle Chalk Hill Or $53.00 Over Oaked Far Niente Chard Or Cakebread or Grgich Hills or Plumpjack and all the fake Overrated overpriced Cali Chards and then see if 47 bones sounds like alot compared to an $80 bottle of Puligny Montrachet

  80. February 18, 2008

    ChezJosh

Honestly, I just am not a big fan of the oaky whites. Though my experiences with the big white burgs have been minimal, it just doesn’t seem to be a preference of mine. Maybe I’ll give them another chance with these, though

Gary Vaynerchuk – “the greatest fish and wine drinking human on the planet.” Been drinking that fish again, eh?

QOTD: same as some of the other commenters – the price and availability locally.

  82. February 18, 2008

    Joshua E.

I’ve never had a wine from that area. Money’s the only thing holding me back right now.

  83. February 18, 2008

Enjoyed the show…your enthusiasm is wonderful.

QOTD: 1) We keep trying Chardonnay and don’t love it…don’t even like it. These wines are different, I know.
    2) They are out of our budget range.

  84. February 18, 2008

    Chateau_Plonk

Great Show! Last year when I figured out who Saint Aubins neibors are I started seeking them out. In fact, the 05 Girardin was the first one I had. It’s definitly some serious chard!

  85. February 18, 2008

    JoshL

Yo GV, awesome show~ great information~ sorry haven’t left a comment in over a week…been in lurker mode due to the day job getting pretty busy. God…imagine if I were married and had kids? Given that I just got out of a relationship and I’d want to date a girl for about two years before the proposal, and 1 year engagement period…I’d say you can expect about 3 more years of consistent comments from me =P
QOTD: Exactly! Man, looks like Hubert Lamy is sold out at your store already! Maybe I should pick up a bottle of Vincent Girardin this weekend. I think there’s a St. Aubin island or something in Jersey though…is that right?

  86. February 18, 2008

    MN George

Gary, what is with the itching? I have to say it reduces the appeal of the wines when the taster appears to have poison ivy…

  87. February 18, 2008

    Harley Stan

Great show today, way to start the week.
QOTD- I have not tried one yet, I will add it to me ever growing list of wines to try.

  88. February 18, 2008

    conscious

First time commenter, long time lurker. Great show as always, but hopefully you can rectify the wardrobe malfunction before you get a bunch of bad PR. To be clear, I don’t mean to hate, rather just play. I really enjoy the show and my kids are drawn to it like a moths to a flame. You know the 30% you lose in the first few minutes, I’m sure they aren’t kids. Maybe that’s your true demographic – you should taste gummy bears and compare it to Riesling you had last year.
QOTD – Price points are holding me back from a lot of white burgs. While I find whites much more aromatically appealing, I have tasted a only scant few that I would trade a kidney for – more often with reds and stickies. Recently our Signature Liquor Store in Vancouver had a huge burg tasting (some premier cru but mostly borgogne and village) and I was completely unimpressed from a qpr point of view. Guess I have to seek out some of the lesser known areas or varietals. Keep up the good work!!

  89. February 18, 2008

    Dave Canada

Wow….can honestly say I have never heard of this region. Did a quick search up here and we have a few….will check it out! Thanks

  90. February 18, 2008

    Mike Z in SD

Had a St. Aubin a few years back with a friend, Charlie, who is in the wine biz (and certainly in ‘the know’ for this region). I recall that it was very good, but I honestly don’t think I appreciated it at the time; I was much less experienced.

  91. February 18, 2008

    MW_DM,IA

QOTD: Adding St. Aubin to the regional watch list. Something tells me this is going to be an expensive year for me. From the sounds of it, though, it’ll be worth the monies.

  92. February 18, 2008

    KVolk

QOTD: only way I am getting to try these wines is if I but them from you Gary….which may happen.

  93. February 18, 2008

    okay that’s buy not but….

  94. February 18, 2008

loved the show… i have been on an unofficial white burgundy safari… i like what i have had thus far. The last wine, the Hubert Lamy sounds very very good, i need to check my local wine merchant for a bottle.

Yes, the same problem as others, availability and $$. Will work on it.

  97. February 18, 2008

    Glenn

Great episode today, you really pumped me up to try a St. Aubin and I normally don’t care for Chardonnay. Might be that Cali thing. I have never tried one. Checked the local merchants here and just found a 2005 St. Aubin; Frionnes;Marc Jomain at $28.99. Really considering going to get it and hope it comes close to what you had today.

  98. February 18, 2008

    SGoodwin

    Hey Gary,

Major wardrobe malfunctions today. The shirt is all funky and unbuttoned but more importantly…where is the “bringing the thunder” wrist band?!?!

QOTD: If those prices are representative, I’m waiting for (a) my budget to go up, or (b) the exchange rate to improve DRAMATICALLY. But I did have a nice Maconnais this weekend so I guess that’s going to have to satisfy me for now.

QOTD: Sane pricing. There are so many wonderful wines priced in the mid $30s or less to be able to rationalize a high $40s wine… but check back with me after my ship comes in. That $29 WB, however, sounds interesting and it may make the shopping list.

    QOTD……consider it done GV!

I WILL try one…this was the show I asked you to do my brother(yeah I called you my brother,,,,,’cause I rool like that!)

and you know what……we(you and me)ARE changing MY wine world….I like it!

  101. February 18, 2008

Gary, I thought a Premier Cru was a step above a 1st Cru. Or is that only for red burg. Some info on the rating system would be helpful. I was not into the taste of the white burgs I have tried. I still have some and will have to try again.

  102. February 18, 2008

    MARSHALL

It would be cool if you could do a show about fortified wine from the roussilon and banyuls regions. Can you score some GV?

Here is a new one… The Itchy Itch. The only place you didn’t scratch was your stomach, which you could have easily since you were flashing it. You WERE itchy before the St Aubin, right ? I have had one unremarkable St Aubin 1er Cru, but it seems that it is time to try another.

    Take some Benadryl.

Very exciting show! Thanks for bringing the new thunder daily. Coming into the wine world during the ABC (anything but Chardonany) era, I have not had much Chardonnay. Most of my white wine experience has been riesling, sauvignon blanc, and random blends. The chards I did have were new world. The bigger and oakier, the better the rating type of thing. I have recently asked myself, what makes a Chardonnay great if it isn’t really oaky or rich? Can it match the aroma of a good sauvignon blanc, or the ageability of a great riesling? I think this show has at least steered me in the right direction. Thanks Gary.

QOTD: No I have never had a St. Aubin, but after this show I will have to find a few.

  121. February 18, 2008

What am I waiting for? I’m a little low on cash since I just spent $50k on a wine cellar! No, just kiddin, what would really slow me down is the price. I think I have to buy less wine during the week, so I can afford a couple bottles of more expensive wines. Thanks for the episode!

  122. February 18, 2008

I definitely need to explore white wines more. Will try to get one of these the end of this week (pay day) :)

Also gave me the great idea of sending a bottle of one of these to a family member who loves white wine for her Anniversary in May!

QOTD: Never tried that region before

QOTD: Really it’s the price point. It’s not very often that we buy wine that’s more than $20.

Don’t let that discourage you though. I’m glad I know about St. Aubin now and it’s really informative to hear you talk about the different appellations, even just to hear it in conversation rather than only seeing it as words on a label.

  127. February 18, 2008

    Kenny Hyder

QOTD: I’m almost positive that I’ve seen Saint Aubin on a label a couple times before, but I’ve never heard anything about it or had it recommended, and like Kenny below I tend to buy reds (or at least spend larger amounts on reds than whites)…but they do sound very interesting.
Also, I’ve been interested in finding white wines that can age for more than a couple years just to see/smell/taste the difference in a bottle over time – so thank you for mentioning the potential for cellaring these whites.

  134. February 18, 2008

    Paul

Mostly drinking reds these days, but will have to look for a bottle of this white, never had wine from the region. I normally drink wines with a lower price point, but maybe on a special occasion it would be worth uncorking.

Nothing wrong with European cellars and Eric Sollman… I too have happened to find that his wines match well with pallet. compared to many other importers I would say he ranks in the top tier. At least its better then selecting a wine based on the brightly colored animal on the label….

got turned onto St Aubin a few years ago down in LA. somme told us these wines do not shrink from the big name White Burgs and while they may not be as profound as their big name neighbors they are @ least fiscally approachable in a restaurant.

    great region and solid show.

    you have a rash today?

Hey Gary, did you get oak poisoning?
I am not a fan of chardonnay, but then I have only had Cali Chards. I know white burgundy is supposed to be an entirely different venture, this show was great motivation to pick some up and taste.

I’ll refer to this episode as the pajama show. It felt like you just woke up from a nappy nap and Mott started rolling…Content wise this show was short and full of secret information.

Burgundy and Bordeaux are my traditional haunts and St. Aubin is a good place to find value. At one point I was a Beverage manager for a seafood restaurant and along with the Puligny-,Chassagne- and Batard-Montrachets we had the Meursault and Chablis covered. My value part of the list had St. Aubin, St. Veran, Montagny and Macon. I cannot forget mentioning Pouilly-Fuisse but that is pricier. Corton-Charlamagne didn’t make it to my list as it was difficult to get and very pricey. The three most important factors in Burgundy are terroir, terroir, terroir. Veins of chalky marl occur in the soils of the best vinyards and add a minerality and complexity. For those who sadly think “anything but chardonnay” these wines would be a revelation.

There also are value villages for reds in the Cotes de Nuits at the Northern end of the Cote D’or. This would be an excellent counterpart episode to the St. Aubin Pajama Party.

First time posting a comment – been watching for over a year. Great service to the wine community – I’ve told roughly 80 ppl about you – it’s like a little cult…. White Burgs changed my entire perspective on Chard. It’s another world…totally different character. I just had Giradin’s Grand Cru Corton – Quintessence…wow…pricey…but better than any $100 Calif Chard.

Gary, starting a new trend with the 3rd button unbuttoned??

QOTD: I have tried white burgundies and know the St. Aubin region, but can’t remember having one from there. Not terribly excited to rush out and buy one. I enjoy some of the less expensive Sancerre’s and Vouvrays as a first choice.

    Hi Gary,

I got turned onto St. Aubin by Burgundy Wine Company in NYC a couple of years back and love the QPR aspect of these wines. Curiously, last Friday I was in Wine Library and picked one of each of the first two wines that you tried in this episode.

I like St. Aubin because they are cleaner/purer tasting than their brethren from Burgundy so one can appreciate the subtle flavors, and they are a lot less expensive. I don’t think that a high end St. Aubin will stand up to a high end Puligny Montrachet, but with the money that you have left over you can buy dinner for yourself and your date.

Great wines for the money, and darn good wines in their own right.

    See you soon,
    Karl B.

  173. February 19, 2008

I have drank St. Aubin wines in the past, in particular the pinot noirs from Vincent Girardin, and have found them both excellent to taste and a great value. i have not, however, tasted the whites from the region or from the maker. I will definitely do so now.

    thanks for the eye-opener

Try to think with me for a moment out of the box ;-)

On today’s show, specially in the last bottle, you seemed so impressed, you said words like “very pretty”, “brilliant fruit”, “gourgeousness”, “so on the nose”, “stablishes an interesting wine level”,”great acidity”, “very funky”, “the greatest fish and wine…”, “i’m so excited”, etc.
but you scored only 93+… haven’t you been to though with your on pal? I believe you will never find a 100pts wine if you don’t accept that perfection is not a point to reach, but a road to travel through…

I mean, if you relly like a wine like these why not scoring them higher notes? Getting to a 100… break free!!! spread the thunder!!!

Istead of stablishing a note, try to use stars or glasses in a 1-to-5 scale, like Gambero Rosso. Maybe you can do that just for a change… for fun at least.

Either way, I score based on my own palate and taste. I like you and the show and keep on with the good work.

Can’t say I have a had a St. Aubin recently but it is and will be tasted very soon. I still can’t understand why people can’t justify spending that much on a white but a red is no problem. Weird.

QOTD: I’ve had the Vincent Girardin in a couple of vintages, as well as a dozen other St. Aubins. I have to agree, there is some great quality and incredible value in these wines.

  184. February 19, 2008

    Adam P

I’ve tried Pacalets Saint-Aubin, and the wine was brilliant.

It always kills me though, to see the wine library prices! I know you are a big store, so you buy bigger amount, and thus get better prices. But i think that because of your huge sales, you profit less from each bottle sold, than your average retailer. Now link that with the low low value of the dollar, and us europeans just wanna jump on the queen mary and bring it all back home!

I have tried them. Not a big Chard fan as a rule, but found it to have some nice minerality to it. Another great under the readar Burgundy area for reds (Pinot) is Auxey-Duresses. Some real bargains in premier cru there as well.

    Nice show Gary.

QOTD: The only thing holding me back, prior to the show, was ignorance of the region. Thanks, AGAIN, for dropping knowledge on the net and helping to expand my wine horizons.

I like White Burgundy and have had a number of them over the years. I have not tried a St. Aubin however. When I get back into white burgundy purchases, I will try one.

I ordered the Hubert Lamy St. Aubin Clos Chatennier only 60 comments into the show. Unfortunately, the 3 bottles left that didn’t come in contact with Gary’s shirt were already sold. :-(
Gary – please did up some more of that St. Aubin.
Great episode. But I’m still itching…

I haven’t tried St. Aubin because I make yearly treks up and down California and I have too much chardonnay to drink it all now, let alone buy more from France.

QOTD. No I haven’t tried a St. Aubin yet, but I’ll seek them out now!

Thanks again, for broadening our horizons!

Damn it Gary, you are adding to my shopping list tommorow.
1st a Loire Cab Franc now this.

Have to say thanks though, never thought wines from this area would rock, but thinking about where it is, why not?

Love finding out about these less well known areas, thanks again

    What’s holding me back? Availability.
BUT. I in a few weeks I’ll be spending a week a mere 5 km from the village of St Aubin. I will give it a go. I promise.

    GR8wine

    OK,
Since you’re ALREADY sold out of the last two — QOTD: I’ll have to seek them out elsewhere. Yes, I’m a fan of the white Burgundies but again with combo of the Euro and increasing sophistication of wine drinker’s they’re harder to find at affordable prices.
I’ve had the wines from the surrounding areas and yes, they are outstanding. Now it’s too bad the “secret” of St Aubin is out because it’s hard to find them too.

    Hey Gary………..

I think you should briefly explain, some of the terms you use. “Premium Cru”

Especially with French wines; were there is so much confusing wordage on the label. It can be intimidating for us novices buying French wine.I think possibly even stops some from making that purchase. It certainly does for me.

I just got Kevin Zraly’s revised “Windows on the World- Complete Wine Course”.
It is easy reading and I finally am begining to understand some of the many terms used in French Wine labeling.

My favorite white wines are white Burgundies. I have had St. Aubin and are a great QPR for a white Burgundy. White Burgundies ,overall, are the best Chardonnays you will find worldwide. I also love Chablis coming from near this region of France.

I sell the Saint-Aubin 2003 at my store in CT, would you consider it more of a deal for that vintage at $17.99? I’m, not a big white wine guy, but I did enjoy the 2003. Cheers to reviewing yet another wine from my store. Thanks Gary!

QOTD: I have not tried a St. Aubin, since this is the first I have ever heard of them, but I will look for it and consider it, but the price is a little steep.

I can honestly say that unfortunately I have never had a white Burgundy. Boo! I enjoy red Burgundy quite a bit so I look forward trying out white. This spring, it is ON.

Nice show :) Here in Europe prices of good Burgundy are skyrocketing. So I hope you guys from USA don’t buy the rest of affordable bottles, like those from St. Aubin :)

    Carly

I have never even heard of St. Aubin! I’m sure it’s delicious. Hopefully, by the time I am able to afford it, the price won’t have skyrocketed because of your exploding popularity and influence in the wine world.

Thanks for sharing. FYI, wineries don’t make wine to keep it a secret. Keep spreading the thunder!

A few hours after having watched this episode, I discovered a St. Aubin wine on my friend’s table (not a WLTV watcher either). It sweeter than I had imagined but also more complex.

Don’t think I have even seen these Chardonnays in my world. $30 to $50 for a french Chardonnay is difficult. But if I do see what you have tasted I usually buy some to compare notes.

You can call me a friend, because you give of yourself to me and many others daily! I just say I wouldn’t hesitate to give you friend status!

Things currently holding me back would have to be the money factor, the time factor and the why do none of these rotten stores have what I want factor. Hopefully when things settle down in April after getting married next month the first two of the three will be resolved and I’ll go on a serious hunt for some Saint Aubins.

  226. February 22, 2008

I just picked up the 2005 Vincent Girardin Murgers Des Dents De Chien St Aubin. It was fantastic! My wife and I cooked some Mahi Mahi and really enjoyed this vintage with it.

    GV,
QOTD: Just have not been aware of Saint Aubin, but until I started watching WLTV last month I had never had a wine from France. Since then I’ve had a few, but the selection here isn’t the greatest. I always head out to the few wine shops and search for ones you recommend though and will seek out a Saint Aubin this weekend.
My QOTD: Do you walk around the rest of the day at work with no shirt on and throw one on before the episode? I bet the rest of the staff would love that. Started laughing when it looked like you had one button done on the entire front of the shirt:-)

  228. February 23, 2008

    tuscanbob

The more I learn about French wines the more I realize just how little I know. I haven’t had St. Aubin but will seek out (you’re sold out of those top two !!).

    wannaBconnoisseur

Great show Gary, love learning about new places!!

Q – Not had one, would have a tough time bringing myself to spend $30-$50 on a Chardonnay of any kind, with the exception of Champagne but that’s different. Usually reserve those price points for more serious reds. Baby steps Gary, I’m now drinking a significant amount of white wine, a year and a half ago before I discovered the thunder show, I never touched whites.

  230. February 24, 2008

    Stevo

Never had one…will try. Just caught up on the last 5-8 episodes this weekend. Work has made me lag behind. I’m starting a monthly tasting group outside of the Vayner nation before I heard of T cubed (third thirsty Thursday)…first up for my group is Cali Cabs. Also, I picked up the Spectator that reviewed 2005 Bordeaux, great issue. Although I get bummed when I see the prices in the magazine, go online to buy a few only to find that the prices are already higher. I did pre-order a mixed case from the Wine Lib at around $30/bottle, but that’s it. I was just getting into wine when the futures hit and was in school so I missed out a little but I’ll be ready for the next time. Good shows man, keep it up.

Live there right now actually, love the St. Aubin. Actually had an amazing St. Romain the other day, really shocked me. Going to go out and get one today along with the cab franc from the loire for ya. PS: looks like your shirt was trying to abandon ship, everyone got a little more Gary then we had bargained for.

I am a major fan of the Saint Aubin (I have to tell you that the correct pronunciation in French is S-ant O-ban).
I went to a tasting in Puligny-Montrachet where I tasted 13 wines from Domaine Leflaive. They completely blew me away! Made me a fan.

FYI – Dents de Chiens vineyard means “Teeth of the Dogs!”.

Gosh, I need to catch up on my episodes. Anyway, QOTD; I’ve never had a Saint Aubin, and I’ve got no excuse! They actually have two bottles available in the gulag that is the Ontario Liquor Control Board (I should point out that not all Canadian provinces share the same liquor laws, it’s just that Ontario’s are particularly egregious). They ain’t cheap, and I ain’t P Diddy, but maybe for some special occasion I’ll give it a try.

QOTD – I am sure it is good wine, but 50 bones for a white is too much at this house the wife cannot white wine it does not go well. So we do a lot of Reds. Plus, I really have trouble breakin 20 bones for a bottle. I do it occassionally, but only for special wine.

Just caught this episode after the link from the Cru tasting, you didn’t mention it was a topless show! Also, what’s up with the corks on teh table, three white wines tasted but the corks stained bright purple?

QOTD: Don’t usuually go that high for Chards, have never had a St Aubin usually stick to the Macon Villages. I’ll put it on my some day list

Hi, I’m new to your show. I think it’s great. At first, i thought, wow who is this guy? Being from Montréal, Canada, a widely french speaking town and province(Quebec), we have nothing even close to this kind of show on the internet. Just blogs, a bit boring, as a matter a fact, very boring. I can see you are passionnate about wine, as am i. Also, i’m into sports, mostly hockey, was in into baseball, getting more and more into football, since we used to have a mlb baseball team, the expos, wich were stolen from us from big bucks millionnaires who only wanted to buy the team and move it quickly as possible. We have a pretty decent canadian football team and the Montreal Canadians for hockey, the most winning team of championships after the Yankees.

Enough about sports, let’s talk wine. I’m into wine, recently found a passion for burgundy. I have a friend whose very well off, and owns a place in France where he has a small vineyard, mostly with bordeaux varietals, but he recently added Syrah. Did the harvest with him in 2005, blew me away. Tasted some great wines while i was there, and tasted in 2006, at a dinner at his house in Montreal, a 1975 Montrachet, and in the same evening, a 1970 Echezaux(red) the white was a bit tired, but the 75 was still in great shape.

So this is how i got into Burgundian wines and pinots and chardonnays. I just watched the episode of saint-Aubin whites and never actually had a St-aubin before. I also looked at the CRU restaurant episodes and thought they were both excellent. My question is: have you ever tried a Saint-Aubin premier cru En Remilly Hubert Lamy 2002? here in Canada, it’s a bit more expensive. Actually, quite a lot. We have a big, government owned, wine stores group, where every wine passes through. We can’t buy wine anywhere else, except in some very small terroir stores, wich sell only wines from, here, wich i have to admit generally suck badly. The price for the Saint-aubin 2002 is 71$. But a Montrachet or anything close like a Puligny or Chassagne, the cheapest one is 70$ and a bit time producer is anything from 140 to 500$. There’s actually a sale right now on that wine(the st-aubin 02) at 56$ can(43 us!!, yes our dollar is now worth zip!!). Is it worth it? Thanks if you can answer and if not, i know this is mostly a comment page, but what a great discovery your show and podcasts are. Thanks again.

    Denis

Although I’m among those sorry to have the St. Aubin secret outed (it’s the poor man’s Puligny), but a fine show and spot on accurate, although picking up marshmallow in these wines seems something of a stretch.
