QOTD- I have ordered 33 bottles total, so I am in the 2005 game in a small way at a range of prices. Plus, there is still time to buy more, yes?

Great EP Gary, I am a HUGE fan of 2005 Bordeaux.

QOTD: I have myself a nice little collection from the 05 vintage, about 20 bottles from different producers, nothing 1st. growth.

Side-QOTD: Denmark Gary, Copenhagen Denmark! Sipping Aalto 04 – tastes like I would think a random barrel sample would taste like.

QOTD: Havn’t bought any – Being a student, and a lover of bourgogne, I’ve concentrated my cash towards 05 Bourgogne. Also 99 and 01 Barolo and brunello, so sorry to say, havn’t bought, or will buy, a single 05 bordeaux…

Had a couple of 05 Bordeaux, but they have not been easy to find. Sadly, the higher end wine stores here dropped the ball, and many of them ignored all the hype since so many recent vintages were hailed as great, so with the escalating prices, they decided to pass. What is it that is said about hindsight again? Anyway, QOTD, 2005 Chateaux Caronnes SteGemme, Haut Medoc, and 2005 Chateau Sainte Marie Grande Reserve. Nothing in the cellar yet, which is not radool.

Edmonton Canada, and thanks for the shout out!

QOTF: Have had a couple of bottles of 2005, but just discovered Wines form Prioret and have fallen i love. But I guess I will have to shake i off and get a littel frenche….

But the only problem is…. It is pretty hard to getthe wines you try here in Denmark. Could U , now that you are changing things up, try to get like one wine a week that people like me migth be able to find over seas?

Spred the love and bring the thunder!!!

My wife and I received a gift of a bottle of 2003 Chateau Lagnet- Bordeaux Superieur, last summer, from a Brazillian college student, studying in France, that came to the US to be a bridesmaid in our nephew’s wedding. So, we have one Bordeaux.

So Garry I run a high end wine shop in Healdsburg and NEVER buy wine on line (I run a shop and get cost).
But I sprung for a couple based on your reactions to the wine and yes thats a screaming deal for wine from there and the year and all
QOTD: not good on positioning for 05 Bordeaux,But doing real good on Pinot from Anderson Valley from 05 and the Rhone as well ……and thats what i drink way more than Bordeaux!

Did you use “you and I” as your example of the least able wine makers? Even “you and I” could make a good 2005 Bordeaux? I think you are greatly underestimating our cumulative skills at making wine. I have faith. I think with your guidance we could be darn good.

Thanks for the show Gary, and for your SQOTD – U.K., as you know.

QOTD – I’m not, have a couple of entry level basic, a St. Emilion and a Bord. Superieur, but no plans on breaking the bank to get any more.

As you know, Gary, I’m watching from Copenhagen, Denmark (when are we gonna see you here?).

QOTD: Being a Rhône ranger, Languedoc lover, I haven’t bought any Bordeaux as yet but am considering it.

How much does a non-autographed Cardinal go for?

QOTD: About 1.5 case(s) mixed. I like Brdx…but, lean towards the new world a bit more.

This was another informative episode full of speculative fever! Since I adore Bordeaux as a region it shows the New World what is possible in special years like ‘61 or ‘66 and ‘05. I read an article in Slate last week that was a rhapsody about a bottle of ‘47 Cheval Blanc. It would be a good idea to explain the different classes of Bordeaux because there is Petrus at $2000 a bottle and Christian Mouieux at $10 a bottle. There is the Cabernet Sauvignon dominant left bank Medoc appellations of St. Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien (my favorite lefty)and Margaux. South of that you have Graves(Haut Brion)and many good whites there. On the right side of the Gironde and Dordogne rivers you find the Merlot dominant Libournais and Fronsac. The most famous appellations are St. Emilion and Pomerol. There are something like 5,000 Chateaus in Bordeaux. There is a price point for everyone and a 99 point vintage should find the lesser houses or petit Chateaus at their best. For the Premier Crus the prices will be in the stratosphere but the prices drop quickly as you get to the lesser known brands. One of the services that Gary gives us is his own score regardless of what some other famous critic like Tanzer, Parker, Meadows or even Suckling might post. After all, these folks are not in the same room drinking from the same bottle. There will be some variation but a 93 from any of these knowledgable palates is an indicator of excellence and we all benefit. Gary, scores are a good thing….

It might be a good time to try a second label of a big Chateau or dabble in the Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnels like Chasse-Spleen, Ormes de Pez, Potensac, Poujeaux and Siran to name a few. Splurge for Ducru Beaucaillou or try its second label Croix de Beaucaillou. If 2005 is too pricey find a 2001 or 2004 to try as they were excellent vintages. There also exists the nearby Cotes du Blaye and Cotes du Bourg and Cotes de Castillon. If you are a fan of Argentine Malbec then why not try the original from Cahors.

That should be enough territory for 10 episodes. Don’t forget to decant!

QOTD #1: Non-US? Yep, daily lurker from Germany ;-)
QOTD #2: 2005? This vintage was great for bordeaux, no question. But also in other regions like the Rhone. We noticed a huge quality-boost there if you compare 04 to 05.
