    Actually, the item in this episode that really brings the thunder for me is the Fourme D’Ambert, my local Whole Foods has had a wonderful supply of it since about 2 years ago. Any where from nibbling on it with wine to making an alfredo-style sauce out of it, yum!

    QOTD: Yes, I love Sauternes! I have been buying and drinking them for several decades. My oldest is a 1975 Chateau Climens. My oldest Chateau de Fargues Sauternes are 1988, 1989, and 1990. I have noticed that they tend to lose some of their overt sweetness with significant age, but gain remarkable complexity in its place. I agree wholeheartedly with you on the food/wine pairings of Sauternes with blue cheeses or foie gras: they have got to be the greatest of all food/wine pairings.

    I loved your show today, and focused better with the lower key presentation. You know, you can still do this with enthusiasm instead of melancholy.

    QOTD: I LOVE Sauternes. The last one I had was a 1947 that you brought to a WLTV offline. I’m a sucker for noble rot wines. Berenauslese, trockenberenuaslese, etc. Just wish I could afford to drink them more often.

    Here’s my QOTD: why buy a wine that won’t be at its peak until you’re too old to appreciate it?

    Awwww GeeVee, I feel so bad! Hey, I left a comment! It breaks my heart to see you so low in spirits! Cheer up … so many of us out here watch and learn and drink and just LOVE what you do. You’ve got more friends than anyone I know!

    QOTD: Never had one, but did taste one at the local wine store. Would certainly love to drink that 1990 or 2001 that you had on the show, but Jeeeez, they be ’spensive!

    GeeVee … keep up what you do! And OH, BTW, please don’t stop rating the wines. Darcey and I have only been steered wrong ONCE in over a year of watching and buying wines that you recommend (usually from WL) … and THAT was the Alamos Malbec; we can’t see why you would have recommended that one, BUT that was the only one, so I am not complaining at all. We rely heavily on your opinion, and Darcey and I consider ourselves so lucky to not only have amazingly similar tastes in wine as one another, but to have amazingly similar tastes in wine as you! THAT is incredible, and we have consumed SO MANY great wines that we would never have known about if it had not been for you, and for you rating them, so please don’t stop that valuable service. You have literally changed the way we drink, the way we taste, and what we buy and what we try.

    We can’t kiss your ass any more than we already do! We totally DIG WLTV!

    Thanks for the comment about 1/2 bottles as that is the only way I buy Sauternes as they are cheaper and age faster. You got dangerously close to Sir Gary at times though. What happened to sniffy sniff?

    BOGUS that we didn’t get to 1000 comments yesterday…maybe I should have left another 300 to make the quota.

    QOTD: I LOVE to experience all wines, from the most dry Sancerre to the stickiest, sweetest Niagara icewine… but to have a whole glass of the sticky stuff isn’t my bag. However, I gotta give it up to Sauternes, St. Croix du Mont, Hungarian Tokaji, Austrian and German Beerenauslese and other Noble rot wines for their unique flavors and complexity and AMAZING ability to pair with stinky and bleu cheeses and, as you mentioned, foie gras. I hope the energy is back soon! Cheers, and thanks as always.

    I’ve never has a Sauternes, but I do like sweet dessert wines once in a while. Price has kept me away, but there are some nice sweet wines out there in the $20 or less range.

    too funny. Love the roaring 40s, had some for the first time a few weeks ago.

    QOTD: Interesting story – bought a half bottle of 04 Ste Helene, without really knowing what sauternes was about. Popped it, poured it WHOA HOLY SMOKES what’s going on here?! Figured out it’s a dessert wine in a hurry. Didn’t blow me away, but I’m imagining what a good one tastes like… will be hunting for 500mls of the 90 fargues next time I visit Premier in Buffalo!

    As far as education goes, this was a great episode. I was just happy to actually hear “D’Yquem” pronounced outloud so now I know how to say it after reading about it for years.
    However, without that classic GV pizzaz it left me feeling like I just drank some gray ghost chardonnay.

    I really enjoy Sauternes, but in my house they are for special occasions only since my wife doesn’t like them. I’ve had Rieussec, Yquem, Giraud and more. I find that Sauternes have to be served alone or paired with the right dessert. Otherwise they can be an awkward end to a fine meal. There must be several drinkers to justify opening a 750 mL bottle. Finding an aged Sauternes at the local wine store is a rarity in my locale.

    QOTD: Gotta give it a try, had an interesting white dessert wine from Kluge here in VA recently that is aged in bourbon barrels and is pretty tasty. In general I prefer port for after-dinner beverages.

    QOTD: I’ve never had a sauternes wine :’(, yet another area to go exploring :D , loved the episode. I assume when it comes to dessert wines that if they have a good acid fruit balance (fair chunk o’ acid) that they’ll typically age a few years. I have a few cheapies (15$/375mL) that I picked up in 1/2 cases so I’ll be able to answer it myself in a few years but hopefully I’m not wasting my time.

    Keep up the effort, people are starting to leave comments – it’s improving month over month the averages are up!
