Not gonna be able to make it out from Japan.
I like both when they are good and I dislike them both when they are bad.

Barefoot makes a good Pinot Grigio for $6.00. I just opened a Gabbiano 2006 for $9.50 which is almost as good. I like Pinot Gris, but would rather have Riesling.

Why just this past Sunday we had the Fantinel Tesis Pinot Grigio ordered from freewinelibrary. Delicious and very atypical i inasmuch as it had very good weight and flavour. That was ten bucks very well spent.
I’m hopoing to be there if mass transit will deliver me from nyc. Perhpas someone can post instractuions.

Qotd – According to my notes the ‘05 Benton Lane Willamette Valley Pinot Gris seemed to be my favorite. I also enjoyed the ‘05 Maresh Yamhill Pinot Gris quite a bit. Both were strong with flavor complexity and good mouthfeel with an excellent clean finish without that sour milk finish I find on so many whites today.

Not coming to NJ for the party. Hope to see you at the Washington thing.

Gary you pronounce California and Washington just fine. I guess I need to work on pronouncing your state as No Joy-zee. Really! I don’t get what is so hard about Oregon? There is no “e” on the end that would make one think that you should say “gone”. It is OR-E-GUN. Just say it moderately fast. You are a smart guy, you can do it. (If you had given the Chehalem a friggen 89 you could have pronounced it any way you wanted.) You seem to be scoring based on $$$ and other’s scores lately. The Chehalem Pinot Gris is an 89 poit wine my friend. Admit it you were totally influenced by WS giving the Fantinel a 90 when you would have scored it higher, so thus had to score the Chehalem lower. It’s ok though I still love you.

QOTD 2: Trying to get into white wines currently … as previously mentioned it was a Pinot Grigio that turned me away from white wines to begin with … but im ready to try again … i got one on the way.

QOTD #1 – Nope, won’t be making it out to the East coast for the party.

QOTD #2 – has to be a toss up between Solena (Oregon) and Airfield Estates (Washington). Extremely different from each other, but they both knock my socks off.

I never did figure out how to pronounce that “state between Washington and California” correctly. Great playback between you and the team.

You description of the Chehalem Pinot Gris might just be enough to get me out of my red wine kick and try some white again. Of course, I wrote that line midway through the episode. I have little faith in white wines…

QOTD #1 – sorry dude – too far from CA and I have to work. When are you coming out to SF/Napa area again?
QOTD #2 – ouch – can’t remember the wine exactly, but PG is one of my favs to order at a restaurant – almost always great value and goes great with salad and apps.

QOTD: Gary, I would LOVE to be there, but the money is a little tight right now, and I would have to fly in from TN. Sorry, man. One day, I would love to make it up there to meet you and see the WL. Please have as much fun as possible in my absence.

For the second part, I am not really all that into Pinot Gris/Grigio. I tasted one from Italy in a tasting last year that wasn’t all that bad, but I fail to remember the name. Shame on me…

    QOTD#1: Never say never!

QOTD#2: P.Gris Grand Cru Steinert from Pfaffenheim was a great intro to the varietal, but may have set the bar too high!

QOTD: I will be there for the Thunder Party on the 29th and am coming from out of town (from Washington, DC). Mott – get me in.

I really, really, really want to come down on the 29th, but it looks like I will have to work. It isn’t settled yet, I won’t go down without a fight!

QOTD: My favorite Pinot Gris is from Handley’s Anderson Valley. Delicious wine, and they recently were certified organic I believe. Which is always a plus! I also had a really nice Pinot Grigio from Ohio’s Fireland Isle.

    Hey Gary-
    1. Nope. I live in Cali.
    2. I do like Elk Cove for domestic, but love what North-East Italy does with the varietal. However, I haven’t had a Pinot Gris from the Alsace…I’ll have to get on that.

  24. February 27, 2008

    Chateau_Plonk

    1. I’m in Idaho. so…..
    2. Best PG I’ve had recently was a fancy Zind Humbrecht which I can’t remember the name of. Ungodly color and concentration. A revelation.

  25. February 27, 2008

    nougat

I am planning on being there 3/29.

QOTD – Haven’t had many PGs, but I know it aint Santa Margharita, which sucks. Believe it or not, I really enjoyed a 1.5L of Cavit late one night with friends after a wine tasting. Liked it so much that I went overboard and puked like a teenager later that morning.
