Man…I stumbled in (random “internetting” … not drunk) to see yesterday’s episode and look what I found. :D

QOTD1: No, I’ll be far away
QOTD2: Probably the best so far is Tokay Pinot Gris Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim from Gustave Lorentz, Alsace.

  9. February 26, 2008

    MagnumGourmet

    Top 10…Woo Hoo!!!

  10. February 26, 2008

2 consecutive top 10’s. I should really get some work done.

QOTD 1 – Can’t make it, but look forward to the pics.

QOTD 2 – Don’t really have a favorite. Although, I know it is not Santa Margherita.

  11. February 26, 2008

great show. I’m glad to see you pumped again.

  12. February 26, 2008

QOTD: Nope, can’t make it. Have fun though!

Any second thoughts about that big ass bite of cheese?

  13. February 26, 2008

    NADINE

Unfortunately no I will not be there. To be quite honest, I don’t remember when I did have a pinot gris, lol. Have a nice day :)

  14. February 26, 2008

QOTD: I would like to make it to the Dirty Jerz on March 29th, as it’s my birthday and I can think of no more fun place to celebrate my 29th b-day. But the girlfriend doesnt want to make the trek all the way from Wyoming to the winelib. GV, I’m tellin’ ya brother, I would LOVE to be there. Best.

QOTD: I’m a no show, and a no Grigio. I will seek some out.

  16. February 26, 2008

    Bill Luby

    Good show, Gary.

QOTD #1: Nope. Maybe the next time you do something in the Napa/Sonoma/SF area…

QOTD #2: Year after year it is the WillaKenzie Estate Pinot Gris. I don’t know how these guys do it, but their consistency is amazing.

  17. February 26, 2008

    bfrankphoto

QOTD: 1) can’t make the trip

  18. February 26, 2008

    Loweeel

Woooo top 20. Will answer QOTD later. (I don’t even watch Chardonnay-only episodes).

  19. February 26, 2008

    Loweeel

QOTD — Will do my best to be there, but like I said in my email, I’m really worried about parking!

Why only head to head? Why not California PG and French (Alsatian?) PG as well? I love that you’re doing the cross-terroir, but branch out a little bit more!

BTW — are these the Eisch “breatheable” glasses?

  20. February 26, 2008

    cameron w

No show, no chance. No Pinot G either. I am going to have a Blanco Nieva Sauvignon tonight though.

  21. February 26, 2008

    HenryW

You need to spread your wings and establish the West Coast Wine Library here in SoCal. The LA wine scene needs a New Jersey presence. Can’t make the trek on 29th. Wish I could.

  22. February 26, 2008

    cumpari

I’ve been getting into the Pinot Gris coming out of Oregon…lots of great stuff in the 12 – 16 range.

  23. February 26, 2008

    Kathleen Lisson

I am coming to WL on the 29th! Can’t wait to check out your cheese section. I love wine and cheese.
    Kathleen Lisson

  24. February 26, 2008

    SaraMHCRU

I second the concerns about parking for this big bash, but I am certainly going to try to be there!

I’ve had a few pinot gris from Oregon, and I liked them all. I haven’t had a pinot grigio in a long time, and I think the ones I’ve had were kinda lousy. I’ll have to try some again sometime.

  25. February 26, 2008

    cgatesman

QOTD1: Hell, Yes! I already left you a comment on your Facebook wall saying I’m coming! My wife and I will be coming with another couple Vayniacs. We’re driving about 2 hours. I hope we can get in on the second part of the day. ;-)

QOTD2: I have yet to find a Pinot Gris that really wows me. I found Corte Pitora to be a decent QPR.

  26. February 26, 2008

    Bring on the THUNDER PARTY

  27. February 26, 2008

too bad you can’t ship wine to Montana.

QOTD: not a fan of the pinot gris/grigio/grauburgunder grape, but the last one I had from Adelshiem (2006) was ok.

  29. February 26, 2008

    NickJW

    LOL! “sheep butt”

QOTD: I haven’t really tried too many PG’s to say

  30. February 26, 2008

    Carolyn

QOTD 1- right now, the plan is to make the trek from Cleveland to attend the festivities on March 29. Expect some harrassment about Ohio wines…

QOTH 2 Filadonna Pinot Grigio – this past weekend – good QPR at $12.99!!

  31. February 26, 2008

    cs

We’ll do our best to be there. About a 4 hour drive. Right now my favorite Pinot Gris is the Etude 06.

  32. February 26, 2008

    Dominick Mack

I will DEFINITELY be there for the thunder party.

    Don’t really have a favorite P.G.

  33. February 26, 2008

    Cephalopunk

    QOTD:
I’ve really enjoyed some of the Pinot Grigio from Gravner and the Friuli that I’ve had, but I think the hedonistic ripe Alsatian Pinot Gris are really where it’s at for me. The 2001 Marcel Deiss Pinot Gris Bergheim might be the best one ever for me – good minerality, and a real spice cabinet of aromas. Zind Humbrecht is always a good bed.

  34. February 26, 2008

Excellent episode. First time I’ve watched WLTV in the afternoon. Normally I watch late at night, but this was just a perfect way to end my afternoon.

  36. February 26, 2008

Live in Oregon, so no. I’d say the 2001 Bergstom Pinot Gris.

  37. February 26, 2008

    Mr.Ambassador

Not visiting Jersey though I wish I could… hopefully I’ll get the chance to say hello at “Taste of Washington”

The Pinot Gris/Grigios I’m drinking now include Eyrie and Foris from Oregon; both really nice food wines.

  38. February 26, 2008

    John P

QOTD1: I am going to be there, yes, but I’m coming
from Pittsburgh(Steelers fan now, is that OK?).
I wish I still lived in NJ.
QOTD2: I do “like”, not love, San Angeles Grigio with Gorganzala Cheeze.
It sounds odd, but it’s great.

  39. February 26, 2008

You better go see your doctor now after all that cheese gary!!!

I don’t remember Kid City but my favorite toy store will always be Child World.

QOTD: i haven’t had alot of PGs but my favorite so far is the A to Z.

  41. February 26, 2008

    debnj

    1. Yes, my husband and I will be there.
    2. I don’t have a favorite PG.

  42. February 26, 2008

    Anthony L.

I will be there for the Thunder Party. No Doubt!!!!!

Lionel Kiddy City, boy do I remember their commericals. They used to adverstise for on channel 9 every Thanksgiving day during the King Kong, son of Kong, Mighty Joe Young marathon. VERY COOL!!!!

  43. February 26, 2008

    SKN

QOTD1 – my friend and I tried diligently to make 3/29 possible with our work & school schedules so that we could road trip from Indianapolis, but alas, we won’t make it this time. We are, however, planning a road trip to the WL this summer – and we’ll just have to make our own Thunder Party!

My first shipment of wine from the Lib arrived today – thanks – and I’m wearing my wristband! Woo Hoo!

  44. February 26, 2008

    MonkuWino

QOTD – Nope, can’t make it. QOTD #2: Have only had Pinot Grigio from Italy, none were impressive and some were downright horrible. The best PG was from Santa Margarita so that shows you how bad they have all been. Never had a Pinot Gris from the U.S. but will try at least one in the near future.

  45. February 26, 2008

    drew

    another great one….

  46. February 26, 2008

    Nick P

I’m hoping to make the 29th.

Also I used to go to the Kiddie City in Pennsauken, NJ before it was Lionel Kiddie City.

  49. February 26, 2008

    George from NEPA

    Gary,

Gonna try to make it on 3/29. I would be coming in from PA (hence the name) for about a 2.5 to 3 hours ride so hopefully I will make it.

  50. February 26, 2008

    GregStefos

Have you ever considered a live webcam broadcast from the Thunder Party, so the Vaniacs that are unable to be at the party can see the fun?

    Thanks for thinking about it………

  51. February 26, 2008

    joe trdinich

Elk Cove from Oregon has made the best Pinot Gris I have had. I found I prefer the Oregonian style better.

    QOTD: Trimbach Reserve

  53. February 26, 2008

    Sonnenuhr

Excellent episode – quite the battle.

And who got you the glasses, my friend? For an even better head-to-head do the Eisch Breathable Glasses vs Riedel. The Eisch glasses will blow the Riedels away.

    QOTD #1: No
QOTD #2: I’ve had some Alsace Pinot Gris – nothing to write home about and so many Italian Pinto Grigios that I’ve gotten bored with them at this point. I do prefer the northern Italian producers like Lageder and Tiefenbrunner.

  54. February 26, 2008

    Hall

    1. So tempting. A bit far.
    2. The only bottle of Pinot Grigio that stands out in my memory is from St Supery, and it’s one of the contextual bottle-affinities…dinner out with a good friend who freaked out a bit when her whole red snapper came with a face. We had to trade plates, which involved me giving up a pile of wasabi mashed potatoes.

  55. February 26, 2008

    Matt

    Love the stinky butt cheeese.

  56. February 26, 2008

    Greg B.

Big G, Your Head to Head shows are fun stuff, but I do miss the 20 min + Episodes with 4 or more Wines. I guess when you get back from out of town.

QOTD: I wish I could be there, but only 4 days later I’ll flying off to Italia so only one long trip at a time.
QOTD: pt 2 I like Pinot grigios in the Summer, so I’ll let you know more then.

  57. February 26, 2008

Oh,I wish I could attend. Alas I’m stuck in Az.

Coupla things, housecleaning: How, exactly, do you know what a sheep’s-butt component smells like?

    Orey-gone?

It’s a great labor-of-love for you to tape these programs ahead of time for us while you are gone: thanks GeeVee, we appreciate it!

QOTD #1: YES! Darcey and I will actually be in NYC that day, and it will be our last day! We are coming from Virginia (VA Tech area), so this is something special for us! If we can figure out how to get to you (we will have no car) from the Upper east Side, then back, then we’d LOVE to be considered as part of the 100 Vayniacs going out from 3 to 5! Maybe I’ll email you or one of your staff to get ideas of how to get to WL from the UES for that day! We’re very excited!

    QOTD #2: Don’t have a favorite yet!

  59. February 26, 2008

    Sharon

QOTD1: Yes, definitely making the LONG, ARDUOUS, and DEATH-DEFYING journey from MA which should accord me/us with VIP status, n’est-ce pas?
QOTD2: I enjoyed the A to Z Pinot Gris more than any other I have tried (from Oregon). Haven’t tried any from the Alsace yet, though.

  60. February 26, 2008

    Jaybird

QOTD: Elk Cove Pinot Gris, not much to compare to though… I never looked at the vintage but I remember opening and pairing with scallops.

  61. February 26, 2008

    GrapeStuff

QOTD1: No, will be on the west coast. Will miss the partaaaay!
QOTD2: Dunno, havent really had much p.g.

at this rate, friday is gonna be rockin’ like dokken!
OK, QOTD : trimbach, tokay pinot gris reserve personnel. tokay got removed from the equation in alsace casue the hungarians ? claimed the name.

  64. February 26, 2008

    bigmay

Q(s)OTD: Nope, can’t make the party, though I wish I could. And I don’t think I’ve ever had a PG other than your basic Cavit. I did pick up the A to Z you tasted on Episode #312 – just haven’t popped it yet.

  65. February 26, 2008

    musicmanryan

Hey Vayniacs, its great to be back! It has been several months since the last time I made it to the site and watched an episode. I have had a crazy time starting a new job and moving to a new city. Anyway, you have been missed.

Ironically, this is the first time that I can remember ever trying a wine prior to it going through the “Gary Gauntlet”. I have had the Chehalem twice and found it to be quite refreshing and approachable.

Am I the only one that thought the Pinot Griggio looked and sounded like a Chardonnay/Viognier? To me it lost points because it seemed it was trying to be something it was not. Just my two cents…

QOTD: I live in the middle of a cornfield in Iowa, so unfortunately I will not be able to make it on the 29th. I have not explored the Pinto Gri(s)(ggio) world enough to have a favorite, but would say the Chehalem is worth a try.

  66. February 26, 2008

    John Farrin

QOTD: VERY limited experience but the 06 Nec-otium was probably as good as I’ve had. Thank you for the recommend.

btw-Your stream of concsiousness cracks me up, ‘Lionel Kitty City’ ???

  67. February 26, 2008

    DHerbie

QOTD1: Trying to convince the better half that a WL party is a reasonable way to spend an afternoon. Did I miss some information on the party? Any ammo would help.

QOTD2: Can’t recall that I have tried much Pinot G.

  68. February 26, 2008

    Saftig

If we’re really quiet for the next episode (with cheese) we can listen to Gary’s arteries hardening. Be good to yourself.
QOTD: can’t recall the names but had a couple of great Pinot Gris from Oregon.

  69. February 26, 2008

    Jack

I’m flying in from Atlanta that morning. Should be there by 12 if all goes as planned.

  70. February 26, 2008

    QOTD2: don’t have one yet

  72. February 26, 2008

    Robin C

QOTDs: I’m missing your party by 2 weeks. I’ll be in NYC on April 14th. I’m sad. I don’t drink very many pinot gris/grigios. I have found them to be mostly disappointing, but I’m willing to try again.

  73. February 26, 2008

    TommyBoBo of WI

Would LOVE to come to your party the 29th,,, not in the cards, but thanks for the invite
No favorite Pinot Gris,,, have had several, liked em’ enough, just nothing I can remember,,,, but damn that cheese is making me hungry!
    :-)

  74. February 26, 2008

    Katherine

QOTD’s: No, sorry, can’t come to the party. I have to teach college students some stuff. And my favorite PG? Don’t know. Maybe we should taste PG for our first wine tasting group here!

  75. February 26, 2008

    Porter

Bethel Heights Pinot Gris is one of my faves.

  76. February 26, 2008

    BobbyTiger

No can do Gary. I’m self employed. Q#2- Can count the # of Pinot G’s on two fingers. Not great on my pal. [Like the 15-20 minute shows].

  77. February 26, 2008

    Tom L

QOTD1: Yes, I’ll be there. Got parking?????

  78. February 26, 2008

    Tom T.

QOTD – Yes. QOTD2 don’t have a favorite of those wines.
    Where’s everyone gonna park?

  79. February 26, 2008

    Dr. Mike

    QOTD: I’ll be there

  80. February 26, 2008

    MrTaz

    1. Definitely coming on 3/29. Another concerned citizen for parking….
    2. Not a big PG fan.

  81. February 26, 2008

    Chris

QOTD- #1 No, unless you’re paying for the flight out and back!
#2 No favorite yet, mostly into Sauv Blanc, Reisling and Viognier right now.

  82. February 26, 2008

    JC

I want some cheese now! QOTD1: Yes, I’ll try to stop by, but it depends on when my parents arrive that weekend is. QOTD2: I’ll try some this summer hopefully.

  83. February 26, 2008

    David Harris

I love the vibe of the back to back shows.

    QOTD #1: Nope
QOTD #2: Never had one that I liked

  84. February 26, 2008

    Rich

Enjoying the battle format, and great cheese to boot. The singing was great as well, how about a wine and song episode??? :0

  85. February 26, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

Nice head-to-head, even if the results were unexpected. Alas, I wish I were attending the March feast!

    “T”

  86. February 26, 2008

    Geoff

QOTD: 85% chance we’ll be rolling down from CT!

  87. February 26, 2008

    Christopher J

QOTD: No WL party for me, unfortunately.

QOTD: I am really not a big fan of Pinot Grigio, so I don’t really have a favorite. Maybe I will give them another whirl.

  88. February 26, 2008

    Len

Another good episode…like the head to head with the two glasses showing the difference in the color of the two wines. Can’t make it but have a lot of fun! QOTD Not a pinot grigio type but had a pinot by Palmina that was good outside of the ever so popular Santa Margherita back before I tried red wine.

  89. February 26, 2008

    Rhonda

Thanks clown you had me LOLing at my desk at work over the last few seconds of the show. I don’t have a favorite Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio but I just got some wine today delivered from Wine Lib and there is a Pinot Grigio in there so it may be my favorite ;)

  90. February 26, 2008

    Sarah

QOTD2: Love the A to Z and Airlie from Oregon. Also, J. Hofstatter (imported by the same people that bring in the Fantinel) makes a great PG from Alto Adige.

  91. February 26, 2008

    Kev and Ams

I remember when I was a kid we had a Lionel Playworld in El Paso, Tx. I loved that place.

  92. February 26, 2008

    Phil G

    QOTD1 – I’ll be there on 3/29
QOTD2 – In the past, I have enjoyed the St. Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio

  93. February 26, 2008

    chenrys

    Great head to head…very interesting.

    QOTD 1: Sorry but no.

QOTD 2: Don’t have a favorite although we have tasted some we like.

  94. February 26, 2008

    Dominus

    Good matchup on the PGs.

QOTD #1: If it were the 22nd yes, but since it was moved to the 29th I doubt I’ll make it since it’s the little woman’s birthday. She has said “If you really want to go . . .” Do you know how long I would pay for that?

QOTD #2: Since visiting Rome a few years back, I had a glass of Livio Feluga PG every single day and it grew on me.

    Sante!

  95. February 26, 2008

    NY Pete

#1- Only if you have my wristband -insert razz emoticon here- and #2- from Tuscany – Castello Banfi Pinot Grigio San Angelo Toscana IGT

    QOTD: No favorites.

  98. February 26, 2008

    tuscanbob

    1. Haven’t had any Pinot Grigio/Gris that I think are worth mentioning here. I’ll try seeking out that Fantinel…love the color.

    2. Can’t make it on the 29th…some of us gotta work.

    3. In the early days of cable TV in upstate NY (we got it in 1976 when I was 10), I remember seeing those Lionel Kiddie City ads on WPIX Channel 11…used to watch that channel for the Yankee games and that PIX! game after school…PIX! PIX! PIX! I remember that kangaroo jumping on the frown to turn it into a smile.

  99. February 26, 2008

    Tstank

    1. I Can’t come to the party. I am from Portland Oregon. But Gary you are killing me with how you pronounce Oregon say it with me “Or-i-gin”

  100. February 26, 2008

    Little Jonny H

I like the show format GV, however two wines aren’t enough for one episode!!! I think you should have a sweet 4-8 wine tournament once you come back!

    QOTD#1 – I won’t be there, Boo hisssssssss!

QOTD #2- No real favorite Pinot G. While in Italy a couple years back I did have one that left and impression, but i can’t recall the name (I wonder why…)

  101. February 26, 2008

    Susan

Gary-Should know in the next couple of days if I can come………….Looking good!!! :)

    Its not OreGONE….its “Or a-gain”

  103. February 26, 2008

    Primo Bo

I have been waiting for the Gris vs Gigio epp, but you should have done classic France vs Italy.

QOTD: Favorite Gris was the house wine in a cafe in Alsace. Drank wine all up and down the valley and the best one was served in a carafe. Dont know the producer, town, vineyard, or vintage. Favorite Grigio J. Hoffstater. Alto Aldige, Trentino, and Friulli only for the Italian style P.Gri.

Bonus round: I remember the kitty city commercials. Thats old school, right around the time PlayLand burned down… like five different times.

QOTD1 Wish I could be ther but have to teach Chemistry fo aspiring AP students.
QOTD2= Had many Pinot Gris while tasting in Oregon one summer- most are not memorable. Years ago on Long Island we’d drink lots of Pinot Grigio on warm summer evenings- ah brings back many good memories! But have not had any lately.
A fun show even if the cheese and the ham stole the show!

QOTD1: Unfortunately I blew my vacation wad on WDW, so I won’t be there.

Wish I could come all the way out. But I live in Illinois, and my job wouldn’t like me going out to hang with the competition ;)

I haven’t had too many good Pinot Gris, but I like Lageder’s stuff in Italy, and O’Reily’s in Oregon (I think thats the second label of something…)

  112. February 26, 2008

    latraviata

I love pinot grigio with fish or Thai food. My favorite was a $10 bottle of Aurora from Italy. I have not been able to locate another bottle, but it was one of those $100 bottles of wine for only $10.

  113. February 26, 2008

    QOTD: No. Grigio.
That cheese looked really tasty, but at the end it looked like you took a $20 bite.

  114. February 26, 2008

    NB_SPAZZ

QOTD1: Can’t make it. Already had plans to run a 5K with friends and family that day.
QOTD2: No single family favorite PG, yet. Wife favors lighter, crisp pinot grigios from Italy. I go more for Or-a-gun pinot gris with a bit more body and some pear + apple action. So every so often we try a couple new under $20s to see if we can find one that’s a winner for both of us. Our next PG head to head will be Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Gris vs. Fantinel Tesis Pinot Grigio.

QOTD1: No! I can’t because you moved the date! ((angry face))

QOTD2: I like the Trimbach reserve pinot gris, i haven’t had a ton because I avoided the pinot grigios like the plague until I found the wonderful concentrated ones

    March 29th, baby!

How can I say no to a wine library party that’s on my birthday? I’ll be there from North Jersey, but also dragging a friend who’ll be up visiting from Fla, and hopefully a few city dwellers. Still trying to spread that thunder to them all.. I have a feeling that once they walk into the place, they’ll all be sold.

Glad the wines were good today!

QOTD1: Still in talks bout coming out (if I do, I’ll be coming from WI)
QOTD2: PG is not a favorite grape, but I did find one that I liked just recently. It’s the (2007?) Inacayal from Argentina. It had some really nice notes of papaya and other tropical fruits. Yum.

  125. February 26, 2008

    Canadian Chris

QOTD: Not in anymore dude, gotta jet over to Oregon to do some sniffy sniffy whirly whirly. Boys last trip before the kids start arriving!!
QOTD2: Haven’t had so many pinot gris/grigio, but I did have a stellar Rolly Gassman pinot gris which rocked my world recently.

I’ve tried quite a few of mostly the Winebow pinot grigios and I must say, I don’t get it. None are bad wines, but too light in every aspect. This is an area where I say my tastes are new world and I do like many of the Ore’-uh-gun and Alsace PG’s. From OR, try Elk Cove. Yep, it’s a little sweet tasting (rs around 0.5 (from the winery)), but very delicious.

QoTD1: Afraid I won’t be able to make it in person … Maybe someone at WL could put together some footage for a future WL ep … pour some liquor for all of us who can’t be there ;~P

QOTD 1: No, as much as I’d like to I can’t convince my wife to take a 3,000 mile journey unless the end destination is tropical.

QOTD 2: Believe it or not, I have had several pinot gris’ but the best I have had was from an amateur winemaker friend who lives in the heart of Oregon wine country. He bottled what he made under the label of “Fermenting Friends” and his 2005 was singularly outstanding.

  137. February 26, 2008

    JonE

Always been a big fan of Chehalem yet never tried their P/G

QOTD1: Ashamed to say I can’t make it.

QOTD2: Silvio Jermann ofcourse! Not to mention Schiopetto. What a misunderstood grape. But then theres Zind Humbrecht. This is strangely tougher than I thought.

  138. February 26, 2008

    Kevin

Oh dude. If I didn’t have a baby at home, and I could just drop and leave, I would most certainly 1000% be in for some Thunder party action. And I’d even get a spot if I did. Cause I’m far away.

QOTD: Honestly, a Mondavi cheap-o that had nice fruit, but flabby acidity and mouthfeel. I just bought another cheap-o yesterday that I’m eager to give a go. I’m trying to dig new things, honest.

GV, Wouldn’t miss it for the world. Is it an open house theme (come and go as you please) or should we plan on making the day of it? BTW, nice job on getting all of this weeks episodes in with the mass taping last Friday. That’s what I call dedication.

First PG I ever had was a Zind-Humbrecht … setting myself up for disappointment, I guess. Still good five years later, too.

Great show….I will unfortunately not be able to make it to the 29th. However, I’m very excited about the 5th. Now for the fun….

QOTD: the Anne Amie Pinot Gris has been my favorite Pinot Gris so far. For two years in a row I’ve loved their Pinot Gris and thier Pinot Blanc. I’m not a fan of their “lower tier” or second lable though.

Great episode thanks again for the pretape.Qotd No ,I would love to be there but my third child is due on the 19th so not going to fit into the plans (maybe next year). And pinot grigio still in experimental faze for me,have had several but not to the point of naming a favorite yet. Ease up on the cheese Gary 1/4 # in 12 min. wow (ahh who cares you only live once). Thanks Gary and WLTV crew

I will definitely be at the library on 3/29 GV. Should be good times.

Favorite pinot grigio that I had recently was the Borgo Tesis that I actually picked up from WL.

Can’t do the March 29th gig, I wish, but a job and 3000 miles.

    QoTd
I did try a Chateau St. Michelle Pinot Gris and it was very nice, but none that really rocked. It will require further study.

  155. February 26, 2008

    Tom R

You say that Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are the same, but Pinot Gris is normally considered heavier.

This is like saying that Germany is the same country as Deutschland, but Germany is normally considered larger.

English and the language of the wine world are the same, but English is normally considered more meaningful. And for good reason, apparently!

I’m not willing to develop a favorite PG until there’s a consensus on whether it’s one thing or two.

  156. February 26, 2008

    BoiseWiner

Great episode – I was learnings things like the difference (traditionally) between a Gris and a Grigio; what is a classic taste of a Gris…etc.

QOTD #1: Wish we were joining in the fun but it is not to be.

QOTD #2: From your show we starting buying ‘A to Z Pinot Gris’ and it is now our new favorite.

  157. February 26, 2008

    Wine Not?

I’m enjoying this battle week….great idea!

QOTD1: Bad timing….I WISH I could be there on the 29th but I’ll be in Spain! If you ever do another one, I will definitely make the trip!

QOTD2: Felluga Pinot Grigio….discovered it at a tasting of 40+ pinot grigios about 7 years ago….it was the best one we tasted!

  158. February 26, 2008

I can’t wait to make my first trip to WLTV. See you on the 29th :)

QOTD1: Sorry, plan to be enroute to AZ to visit my snowbird bro (not BruciePurpleJuice).

QOTD2: Quite a few friends having a love affair with PG, so it’s another white wine where I’m looking for one that rocks my boat. Many recommends, but still looking.

BTW, don’t know where the “gray pine cone” comes from, but a local winery that specializes in pinot Gris claims it’s Gray Monk, from the Austrian: http://www.graymonk.com/winery01.html

I thought we scolded you enough on the last Oregon wine but guess you are a slow learner. Have to admit you got it right 50% today.
#1- Sorry won’t make it for 3/29. Too far from San Diego
#2- Haven’t had many Pinot Gris but the one I like the best is J Wine from the Russian River.

    Great Show!!!

Hope your week of traveling is going well.

QOTD 1: If one week earlier, I would have made the trip up from Houston during my spring break, but unfortunately, I can’t afford to take time off that weekend for travel.

QOTD 2: I dont usually drink Pinot Gris/Grigio. The only one I’ve had is the Santa Margharita Pinot Grigio, which was far from anything close to being good. Just not my style. I prefer a sancerre or viogner if I’m going to drink a white wine.

    –RH

    Achilleas in Cyprus

QOTD 1 – 29/3 is a long way to fly from Cyprus, so unfortunately, no :-(

QOTD 2 – Never had a Pinot Gris – gotta try one though seeing as I am trying white whites more now

  173. February 27, 2008

    Keith

Q1: Not going to make from Arizona.

Q2: I’ve only tried 2 PG’s, both from Italy, received both as gifts, thought they were like watered down Chards, not at all impressed. I’d be willing to try the ones you reviewed though.

  174. February 27, 2008

    nougat

I am planning on being there 3/29.

QOTD – Haven’t had many PGs, but I know it aint Santa Margharita, which sucks. Believe it or not, I really enjoyed a 1.5L of Cavit late one night with friends after a wine tasting. Liked it so much that I went overboard and puked like a teenager later that morning.

  175. February 27, 2008

    Chateau_Plonk

    1. I’m in Idaho. so…..
    2. Best PG I’ve had recently was a fancy Zind Humbrecht which I can’t remember the name of. Ungodly color and concentration. A revelation.

  176. February 27, 2008

    Fiorentina!

    Hey Gary-
    1. Nope. I live in Cali.
    2. I do like Elk Cove for domestic, but love what North-East Italy does with the varietal. However, I haven’t had a Pinot Gris from the Alsace…I’ll have to get on that.

  177. February 27, 2008

    Lee Dokken

I really, really, really want to come down on the 29th, but it looks like I will have to work. It isn’t settled yet, I won’t go down without a fight!

QOTD: My favorite Pinot Gris is from Handley’s Anderson Valley. Delicious wine, and they recently were certified organic I believe. Which is always a plus! I also had a really nice Pinot Grigio from Ohio’s Fireland Isle.

  179. February 27, 2008

    QOTD#1: Never say never!

QOTD#2: P.Gris Grand Cru Steinert from Pfaffenheim was a great intro to the varietal, but may have set the bar too high!

QOTD: Gary, I would LOVE to be there, but the money is a little tight right now, and I would have to fly in from TN. Sorry, man. One day, I would love to make it up there to meet you and see the WL. Please have as much fun as possible in my absence.

For the second part, I am not really all that into Pinot Gris/Grigio. I tasted one from Italy in a tasting last year that wasn’t all that bad, but I fail to remember the name. Shame on me…

  185. February 27, 2008

    RickD

QOTD #1 – sorry dude – too far from CA and I have to work. When are you coming out to SF/Napa area again?
QOTD #2 – ouch – can’t remember the wine exactly, but PG is one of my favs to order at a restaurant – almost always great value and goes great with salad and apps.

  186. February 27, 2008

    Lee

I never did figure out how to pronounce that “state between Washington and California” correctly. Great playback between you and the team.

You description of the Chehalem Pinot Gris might just be enough to get me out of my red wine kick and try some white again. Of course, I wrote that line midway through the episode. I have little faith in white wines…

  187. February 27, 2008

    Ryan K

Great name for this week’s theme…”Bottle Royale”.

QOTD #1 – Nope, won’t be making it out to the East coast for the party.

QOTD #2 – has to be a toss up between Solena (Oregon) and Airfield Estates (Washington). Extremely different from each other, but they both knock my socks off.

  192. February 27, 2008

    Dan C.

QOTD 1: Oh man … i wish i could make it GV … but I gotta save my bucks for my upcoming wedding! And I know it’s hard GV … but I love my wife even more than the thundershow.

QOTD 2: Trying to get into white wines currently … as previously mentioned it was a Pinot Grigio that turned me away from white wines to begin with … but im ready to try again … i got one on the way.

  193. February 27, 2008

AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! We are short right now at work so I have to be there the 29th… It sucks but hospitals never close so… Hope everyone that gets to go has a safe trip getting there and has a great time!

    Oregon Jim

Qotd – According to my notes the ‘05 Benton Lane Willamette Valley Pinot Gris seemed to be my favorite. I also enjoyed the ‘05 Maresh Yamhill Pinot Gris quite a bit. Both were strong with flavor complexity and good mouthfeel with an excellent clean finish without that sour milk finish I find on so many whites today.

Not coming to NJ for the party. Hope to see you at the Washington thing.

Gary you pronounce California and Washington just fine. I guess I need to work on pronouncing your state as No Joy-zee. Really! I don’t get what is so hard about Oregon? There is no “e” on the end that would make one think that you should say “gone”. It is OR-E-GUN. Just say it moderately fast. You are a smart guy, you can do it. (If you had given the Chehalem a friggen 89 you could have pronounced it any way you wanted.) You seem to be scoring based on $$$ and other’s scores lately. The Chehalem Pinot Gris is an 89 poit wine my friend. Admit it you were totally influenced by WS giving the Fantinel a 90 when you would have scored it higher, so thus had to score the Chehalem lower. It’s ok though I still love you.

Why just this past Sunday we had the Fantinel Tesis Pinot Grigio ordered from freewinelibrary. Delicious and very atypical i inasmuch as it had very good weight and flavour. That was ten bucks very well spent.
I’m hopoing to be there if mass transit will deliver me from nyc. Perhpas someone can post instractuions.

Barefoot makes a good Pinot Grigio for $6.00. I just opened a Gabbiano 2006 for $9.50 which is almost as good. I like Pinot Gris, but would rather have Riesling.

Gary you are freakin hilarious with that cheese. You should do a cheese show just so we can hear your stinky analogies…stuff like toejam mixed in with B.O. and you lovin it. Ewww…

Got the same problem…Japan is too far.

Haven’t had many Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigios so I’ll have to get out there and try a few.

    Quality show!

    Good analogies – great energy!

I agree with some of the other people leaving comments – it could be very interesting to see a “Cheese-show”. Not meaning to turn the show into a food-show, but just a way to widen the spectrum a little.
E.g.: perhaps choose a wine you know to be great with cheese, and then compare it to a wide range of cheeses. Cheeses of different variety, origin and based on different milks – cow, goat, sheep, elephant :-)

I want some of what you had before the show……………. Because you certainly were on the top of your game!

From now on though; I will add the listen-listen to sniffy-sniff when trying wine. Because the wine is probably telling us something we have all missed, up to now.

Thanks for this new awakening Gary!

QOTD#2: a favorite doesn’t really stick out, if I had a choice I would take the Pinot Grigio! And if they are the same grape why screw with the names!!!!

    Nice and short today…like that!!

    Keep it up GV!

Hello Everyone, My name is Robert and I am a Lurker. I have been a Lurker now for about 4 months.

The Lionel Kiddie City was the question that made me decide to leave a comment. As a kid growing up in Cleveland, I remember the theme song and the commercials of the kangeroo jumping on the frown and turning it into a smile.

QOTD 1, I won’t be there, since I live in Beijing now.
QOTD 2, I am not a huge PG fan, but on a recent trip to Napa, I tasted the swanson PG and liked it.

PS. Having trouble registering, is this because I am from China and an issue with IP address? Some sites like wikipedia and typepad have issues when people come from China.

QOTD1: I will not be at WL until near the end of the party but am on the list for dinner.

QOTD2: Have not found one that I think is worth the money, so there are none in my cellar. I buy them on occasion when friends are coming over and usually get advice from one of the WL folks on what’s good at that time.

QOTD: 1. Sorry I can’t be there Friday.
    2. I like the Chehalem Pinot Gris, but my current favorite is the original American pinot gris: Eyrie. The current vintage of it is very similar to how you described the Fantinel. It is way darker colored than the Chehalem, and fuller bodied. I last had it with a light, but rich and full flavored, crawfish dish, and it was a stunning match.

QOTD1 – No, I’d love to but it’s a bit too far for me to make it, busy time of year you know.
QOTD2 – I’m not a big PG taster, but I’ve had a couple of Alsace ones I really liked, don’t have the details to hand right now (since I’m in a hotel in the Gulf!).

QOTD1. I wish I could make it, but I can’t get away from work.

QOTD2. I’ve had a bunch of good ones, most recently Italian Pinot Grigio’s from Ermacora and from Marco Furlan (a.k.a. Castelcosa). Probably my all-time favorite was an Alsatian Pinot Gris: Lucien Albrecht 2005 “Cuvée Romanus.” Delicious. Had notes of ginger, green tea, and ginseng.

QOTD #2: Favorite PG? Milbrandt Pinot Gris, Columbia Valley, WA . . . can drink it for days. Great with a raw stinky sheep’s milk cheese (I love cheese too!)

  227. February 27, 2008

Great show, got to get out and try some Pinot Gris/Grigio

QOTD: 1. I can’t make it, I’m going to the IndyCar race at Homestead/Miami that day. If something like that happens again I’ll be able to plan better though and fly in.

    2. I haven’t had either. It’s tough for a CKC saving up for Med School in the fall. Every time I go home I buy wine for my family (with their money) and this’ll definitely go on the list!

QOTD2: I don’t really have a favorite Pinot Grigio, but I really liked the one you had on free shipping a couple of weeks ago… Fantinel Borgo Tesis

GV, QOTD 1- I wish I could come up from Florida to hang but I am using my time off for The Taste Of Washington in April out in Seattle. 2- As a Certified Sommelier and in the Wine Retail Business and nicknamed “The Mayor Of Oregon”…I am always going to recommend to my Clients that for the most part Oregon Pinot Gris is the way to go my personal favorite from 2006 is Erath at $14 88 Pts Wine Spec. Even though Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are made from the same grapes…I don’t think it is a fair Match-Up. Italian Pinot Grigio is Made In A Completely Different Style as you can see by the color of The Italian Pinot Grigio and the color of the Dark Bottle which probably indicates that the Wine Has Seen Some Oak where the Oregon Pinot Gris is made in Textbook Style for the Varietal…A Light Crisp Fruit Foward, Great Acidity Wines and more Sugarfied. Pinot Gris is not supposed to be waxy and a middleweight like a Rhone Viogner. So Oregon Winemakers produce Pinot Gris in the Alsatian Style and Italians do their own thing….and My Pal when it wants a Light Crisp, Honeydew Melon, Refreshing Glass of White Wine with crisp Acidity is always 100% Of The Time going to choose and recommend for other people’s Pals Oregon or Alsatian Pinot Gris and Not Italian Pinot Grigio. Today’s Rumble was like a Middlewieght Boxer going up against a Featherweight…same sport…different class…not a fair comparison!

Is there a little patch of NJ woods near the WL that’s adjacent to someone’s backyard where we can hang out and build a discreet campfire, grill up some meat, swill wine and find Schaefer beer cans from the seventies?

Regardless, we enjoyed meeting you and the WL crew at the Boston Wine Expo a few weeks back and your cheese was great. Should be even better in NJ.

QOTD 1: Wish I could, but I’d be fibbing if I said yes.

QOTD 2: Don’t have much selection here, I would have to pick one of the high volume brands, most of which have tasted the same to me. I did recently have the store brand PG from Whole Foods and found it acceptable.

Sorry, not going to make it for the party, too may other trips this year.

I really liked the 2005 Wine by Joe Pinot Gris at a tasting. We bought some bottles and it was good but not amazing, but that’s the one that sticks out most in my memory.

We were also big fans of the 2005 J Pinot Gris.

    Territorial Pinot Gris…rocks!

  264. February 27, 2008

    E-Dub

QOTD 1: 3/30 is Shan-Dub’s 32nd… Maybe I can convince her that a great way to spend her B-day would be to visit the “Dirty Jers” and WL…

QOTD 2: Best PG I’ve had is one that my Father-In-Law made from purchased “Italian” juice (it could have been from Cali, NY or elsewhere, but you don’t argue with the guys in Pittsburgh’s Strip District). Really interesting bannanas and honey on the nose. Bone dry, but he didn’t rack it enough times, which left an interesting little C02 “frizante” that gives it a good acidic backbone. The most odd thing about it is that the finish is super long with bannana, pineapple, and pickled ginger notes. I don’t love white wines, but I find myself wanting to save some of this.

QOTD #1: No. Our grant has not come through yet.

QOTD #2: Warming up to the Pinot gris and grigios. Looking forward to finding a favorite soon. Had a Parducci (grigio) from Cali, which for less than ten bones was pretty tasty.

Love the head to head format GV.

    GV,
Thanks for bringing the cheese into the Thunder…..please, bring more to the mix with great wines.
I am not a big Pinot Grigio or Gris wine fan, but I love Tai food. However, your review of this Fantinel might change my mind.

    Q1-I wish!!
Q2-Not sure on the Pinot Gris, however my wife and I had our first Alsacian Gruner Veltliner tonight and it rocked!!! Never would have tried this let alone known what Gruner was before WLTV, thanks GV!

    Nick Lewis

I’m definitely going to come, although I can’t stay all day.

I can recall a couple of good pinot gris/pinot grigios over the years. One was from Napa–I think the maker was Luna or something. I’ve had some good ones from Alsace. I have had many from Italy, but nothing stands out particularly. My experience with is grape variety is one of pleasant tastes, but never overwhelmed.

  270. February 27, 2008

    Nicolas

    Gary,

I think that the main difference between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris is the market share and the growth of each category. Pinot Grigio was growing 5 times as fast a few years back and many wineries made the move to Pinot Grigio because they could sell more wine than if they use the pinot gris name.

Anyway, favorite PG is King Estate.

  271. February 28, 2008

QOTD 1: I’d love to be there, but the cross-sountry trek is more than I can afford.

QOTD 2: I’ve had an ok Oregon Pinto Gris (Panther Creek) and an ok Pinot Grigio (Salvalai) recently, but I’m looking forward to my next WL shipment with a bottle of Fantinel Tesis Pinot Grigio coming VERY soon, and maybe then I’ll have a proper answer for this one.

Everyone talks about how Oregon is the place for Pinot Gris. Personally, I find most of them decent but all pretty similar and one-dimensional. I think Oregon shines more with its Burgundian style Chards (Try Cameron or David Hill). They definitely have more complexity without getting all stupid California on your ass. The price point is spot on too for domestic Chards. Gary, you almost said Oregon right but then you messed it up again. Say it with me now . . O-REE-GUN.

    Hi Gary,
Sitting sick at home catching up on episodes. Can’t think of a better past time to get the mind off the misery than this!
1st of all, love the head to head varietal competitions.
2d, what a coincidence – just had some ‘06 Chehalem Pinot Gris last night.
Sorry can’t make it to the Thunderparty. We are having a murder mystery wine dinner and I get to play a role.
As for Pinot – I’ve had a lot of them but can’t really narrow it to 1. I haven’t had any expensive ones, but the best was from Alsace but I can’t remember the name.

    JayZee

Great show! And we had Lionel Kiddie City here in Ohio as well.

QOTD1: Darn it, but I’ll be flying to Geneva, Switzerland that day so, no, I cannot be there. Darn it!!!!

QOTD2: I’m not a big Pinto Gris/Grigio fan to date. I had a 2006 Masa Canali Pinot Grigio that was pretty decent, though.

  288. February 28, 2008

    Harley Stan

Gary, great episode and you anwered my question about Grigio and Gris. I received a set of the Eisch wine glasses for Christmas, I love them!!!
QOTD 1- Unfortunately I will not be there next month
QOTD 2- I haven’t found a favorite yet, I keep trying them but my Pal doesn’t like them.

Great show and interesting colors to the wine.

QOTD 1: sorry, not giving up skiing utah. will be a blast

QOTD 2: Barmes-Beucher Silicis Pinot Gris – the intensity and depth of the floral aromas were fantastic and were backed backed solid granite stone.

QOTD 1: My company has a client going live with Great Plains on April 1st. As such I regret to inform you that I do not plan on attending the Thunder Party on March 29th.

QOTD 2: I have only tried 3 PG’s but of those 3 I would say I liked the 2006 Stellina di Notte the best.

QOTD: Won’t be able to make it up this time GV. QOTD #2: Don’t drink a lot of PG but have found Zenato to be a consistently good producer.

You mentioned the sugar cane aromas..they harvested the crops around here in mid December and that smell hangs in the air for about a week.

  296. February 28, 2008

    ScottG

QOTD#1: Sorry, I can’t be at WL on 3/29–but I will see you the next week in Seattle!
    QOTD#2: I haven’t had a lot of Pinot G, so no favorites.

I like the head-to-head format, especially seeing both wines in a glass side-by-side. A direct comparison often tells you much more than tasting them one after another.

  297. February 29, 2008

    Sam Lydecker

I’m ready to quit my job of seven years to make it down there for the 29th. I’ll do my best, sir. I’ve been dying to see the thunder’s homested.

Enjoying this weeks format GV. Don’t think I’ll be able to get to NJ this March un fortunately. I am a fan of the VanDuzer Pinot Gris.

I am totally a sucker for milkshakes, and right down the road from my office is a cold stone creamery. I go in about 3 times a month to get their half off milkshake on Thursdays. I get the cheese cake ice cream mixed with graham crackers and real strawberries. Nothing beats it right now.

Great idea with the head to head action.

Will be there on the 29th. Room is already reserved so we can spend the night. Sitter for the kids is already arranged. Have recruited 3 non-Vayniacs to come along for the fun. Counting down the days…..

    GV,
Although it would be a great trip, I won’t be able to make it out on 3/29 from Hawaii. When we do move back to the east coast, I’ll definitely make the trip to the store. I’ve been discovering a bunch of new varietals lately and haven’t yet tried Pinot Gris or Pinto Grigio that I can remember. Started out as a red fan and have recently started trying and buying the whites. Chard, Sauv Blanc, and Gewurz are the ones I’ve tried so far, but will seek out some PGs.

  306. March 2, 2008

    Daniel O

QOTD: I had an off-dry style Pinot Gris from Fielding Estate that I enjoyed, which is saying a lot since I generally don’t drink PG.

QOTD1: No – 12,300km is just a wee bit too far to travel.

    1: OMG I wish
2: I really enjoy Alsatian Pinot Gris (great with a mushroom and bacon omlette), I may have a line on some 01 Grand Crus from Josmeyer. The other one that stands out is the A to Z Pinot Gris from Oregon for it’s great value (liked that one with a salad with bacon and scallops on it).

Good show – I am a definite fan of the Pinot G’s.

QOTD 1 – I am not sure whether I can make it. I have a trip planned to Juarez, MX and it may interfere.

QOTD 2 – Alois Legeder from Alto Adige – rocks!

  316. March 13, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

I want to come to the party but haven’t figured out where to stay yet. I have had the Chelhalem Pinot Gris and about 1/2 dozen others from Oregon and Washington. My favorite Pinot Gris are from Alsace though.

  317. March 19, 2008

    Hey Gary

Did you realise that the Grigio in Pinot Grigio is pronounced Greejoe and not Greezeeoh? Grigio is Italian which means you pronounce it this way.

    CBone

Favorite Pinot Grigio…can’t think of any. I think I’ll try one tonight. Also, what’s up with people making fun of how you speak, like the comment below mine!? You say “grigio” however you want. You bring real smiles to many people, and you ought not forget that. Thanks, and keep the great shows coming.

I can honestly say I wish Drago punched Rockys head clean off in 4 so there wouldnt have been a 5 or 6. Actually I’ll go so far as saying I wish Creed did it in 1 so that would have been it. I just dont find any of the Rocky’s to be watchable. Nice color on the 2005 Fantinel Sant Helena Pinot Grigio. I could just swim in that. QOTD1: I wish I could have gone. If I had the ability to take lots of vacations Id pretty much follow you around to events and things in other states. QOTD2: I havent tasted much other than the cheap $8 a bottle kinds my parents have bought. :(
