Central Otago Pinot Noir is really good- went to NZ a few months ago and was blown away. They really bring the THUNDER!!!!

Wow great match-up episode Gary! I’m going to have to try some of that Phillips Hill Pinot!

QOTD: The most memorable knockout I had was the 2003 El Nido – the big daddy (thus my gravatar). For this year, I would have to say the biggest knockout for me thus far was the 2003 Gemstone I drank for during New Years Eve dinner.

  14. February 28, 2008

Wow. I wouldn’t normally spring 40 bones on a wine, but your enthusiasm tells me I must.

QOTD: can’t recall anything recently that was a revelation, although the last few NZ PNs I’ve had have all been REALLY good. very much looking forward to my Central Otago trip in August…

QOTD: The last wine to do that to me was Educated Guess.

    Top 20 again!

What, no Burgundy? No Oregon? GV, these head to heads are like division champs. We want the entire playoffs!

  21. February 28, 2008

    Marc

Love these H2H matchups GV! And love PN anyway. Gotta get my hands on these!

QOTD: It was the 1990 Tignanello. Had it in ‘98 at $120/bottle and still cannot get the amazing experience to be beaten by anything else. However, more recently I’ve been thrilled with the ‘04 Domaine Drouhin Laurene` PN.

  22. February 28, 2008

Why yes, I do have one of those black wrist bands. Just call me HardCoreCin. :)

QOTD: 2005 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard. A wine buddy shared this with me a month or two ago, and I just waved everyone away and told them to leave me alone for a while. I think I sniffy-sniffed that glass for about 10 minutes, finding new things every with every whiff. The taste help up to the nose, and it was one of the best wines I’ve ever had. I’m on the waiting list, and have found a bottle or two via people selling off their allotment.

the weirdest thing happened the last time i ordered wine from wine library — i ordered 2 bottles of Antonelli Sagrantino — and I received a single shipper with one bottle — Gary, I know your folks can’t just believe everything they hear, but it is true……

It’s the Eisch(pronounced Eye-sch)Breathable glasses, you nebisch. They completed change your tasting experience. Just in case, I got six boittles of the Phillips Hill.

QOTD The last bottle that blew me away like that was 1984 Spottswoode Cab that I had about a month ago. Thought it would be well past peak, but it brought the THUNDER (BIG time).

Nice to see an episode where a pinot actually tastes great. I have had so many overpriced so so ones lately that I am to the point where I have stopped buying them. Curse you Sideways, but the bargin merlot was nice for a while.

QOTD: 2000 Royal Tokaji nectar of the gods!

Last wine that knocked me out was 1999 Dom. Pegeau. AS a matter o’ fact I had it last Sunday, and I am still knocked out by it.

  33. February 28, 2008

    Bruce

QOTD – Last wine that did that for me was the 2001 Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir that I had with a lunch at the winery near Christchurch, NZ. My first proof that South Island NZ Pinot could be amazing.

BTW – Just ordered a half case of the Phillips Hill Pinot current release of what you reviewed on here. It’s been a while since I bought a California PN, I’ve been disappointed by them too many times in the past. Usually too much $$$, not enough thunder.

  34. February 28, 2008

    Roro

QOTD: 2001 Montes Folly Syrah. I didn’t think I even liked Syrah before I tasted this. Bought a few 04’s of this, not the same but still great!

Pinot Noir almost qualifies as desert wine for me, I don’t go there.

  35. February 28, 2008

Great show haven’t drank pinot in a while and would love to get on the mailing list for phillips hill.
QOTD Probably the 04 Dominus one of the best wines i’ve ever had!

QOTD: The Artesa 2003 Cab – http://corkd.com/wine/view/41383 – Had it at my cousin’s restaurant, paired with the surf and turf. Awesome experience. We ordered a second bottle, it was that perfect.

QOTD: The last wine to really surprise me at all was one I thought would be horrible when I picked it up at the shop. Mattie’s Perch 2006 White Shiraz. It was pretty AC, but it had a familiar juice box flavor off in the distance which was kind of fun. Tasted of strawberries and a bit of pepper, and something else I couldn’t name. All in all enjoyable for the $4 bottle, but not great in any sense of the word.

  38. February 28, 2008

    SaraMHCRU

I had a Rhone at a restaurant recently that I seriously enjoyed. Don’t recall the name, but it was totally silky and delicious. I think it was my first experience with Rhone (other than Rhone style from cali) and I want to buy every one that I see now!

  39. February 28, 2008

Great show…haven’t ever had a wine that made me react that way. I hope that I do one day.

    Great EP.
I´m going to an Cali. Pinot Noir tasting in two weeks here in Sweden. I think that new world Pinot Noir with a couple of years in bottle are some of the most food friendly red wines, of all. The world of food is using more and more sugar and sweet tastes, the new world fruit is necessary.

QotD : Tasted three great modern wines from Spain yesterday that really blew me away, 04 Pintia from Toro, 03 Clos de l’Obac from Priorat and Petalos Mencia from Bierzo…

Its time to do a Bierzo episode Gary…

QOTD: Pappapietro Perry Pommard Clones Russian River Vallay Pinot Noir. Yummy. On another front I was lucky to find 2005 Carronne St. Gemme Haut Medoc for $13.00 that was unbelieveable at the price point. Bought a case.

  42. February 28, 2008

    mbannon

    Wow, helluva match today Gary!

QOD – Tokay Escenzia. Un-freakin-believable stuff.

  43. February 28, 2008

love the pinot episode. i guess burgundy and oregon are too easy. pinot grows in strange little pockets.
QOTD: it was a 2002, gevrey chabertin, la tradition by denis bachelet. still closely kept to the chest but boy did have some potential.
    gettin’ better

  44. February 28, 2008

I just ordered 2 bottles direct to try.

About 5 years ago I had some “j” Chardoney that was outstanding. Definately a white for a red drinker.

    Thanks

Are Eisch glasses really so uncommon? You can buy them at the corner drugstore here in Honolulu….

  47. February 28, 2008

    Jaybird

Love the head to heads! I think you just flooded the winery e-mail, I picked a bottle of each…they had another available from mendocino also. Anyway chalk one up for USA, battle royal wine olympics.

QOTD: The last wine that made me act that way was a 2006 De Lisio Australian Grenache also a $40…square that off with a spanish or a Rhone.

Those of you who are going nuts for this Pinot Noir – check it out! Phillips Hill Estates has a profile at AmericanWinery.com, where you can rate and review wines you try! I’m sure the vintner Toby Hill will be thrilled to see your ratings! Here’s the link so you can go straight to the wine -

    Oh oh…
I watched today’s episode and thought “Oh Boy, I have to buy the Pinot from CA”. I jumped on their site, placed the order and then found out it was the ‘06 vintage, not the ‘05 reviewed today. Oh well, maybe it will be just as good.
QOTD: A Medusa Old Vin Zin that was just super after dinner.

  50. February 28, 2008

    Johan

Thank’s for a great episode, I’ve got to find that one.
QOD, either 2002 Richebourg Dom. A_F Gros or, 2004 Donnafugata Ben Ryé Passito de Pantelleria.
The last one actually made me cry.
Nice to see you again Gary.

QOTD – Probably either Four Vines Anarchy or Eos Reserve Petit Sirah. Bruisers both, but lately I’ve been in the mood for bruisers. Good show, I actually like the fact that it wasn’t OR vs Burgundy which is what I tend to think of for PN head to head. NZ PN is fantastic, I’ve stayed away from CA, as most CA producers wouldn’t know what to do with a PN grape if their life depended on it. But, perhaps I’ll check out today’s offering.

  56. February 28, 2008

    Nick Lewis

Avelar Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927. This was a complete surprise to me. I was expecting something sweet and got something fabulously layered. I think the key to me was the fact that it was not expensive. When you get to taste a pricey burgundy or cabernet or something, your expectations are already high, so it is harder to be blown away.

My first experience like that was in 1974 when I had a Mondavi Chardonnay and suddenly realized that there was more to this wine thing than I thought.

Arnaldo Capria Sangrantino di Montefalco 25 Ainee 1999

Red-2003 St. Jean du Barroux L’Oligocene-your recommendation, thank you.

White-2005 Nugan ‘Frasca’s Lane’ Chardonnay King Valley, Victoria, Austrailia

You’ve got to do something about that German pronunciation. It’s not eeesch, it’s icesssh (ice with a shussshy sshh at the end).

  61. February 28, 2008

Awesome show as usual. New Zealand Pinot is definitely on my list. I have not had Anderson Valley Pinot, but Handley from the Anderson Valley makes some great Chard, Pinot Gris, and Gewurz! I will have to see if they make Pinot.

QOTD: That last wine that knocked my socks off was the Quinta do Vale Meandro. The only table wine from Portugal I have ever had, but it was awesome. Had muscle, but amazing complexity, and very fine tannins on the finish.

  62. February 28, 2008

    BobbyTiger

Have had some very good wines, but nothing to completely knock my socks off, (yet).

Love the pinot-noir episode… and the head to head format.QOTD There were two wines that were just killers for me 1995 Dal Forno Amarone and 1994 Shafer Hillside Select….couldn’t put the glass down.

  68. February 28, 2008

    Rick

Chateau Picoron, Cotes de Castillon, 2001: it blew me out of my socks! Expected a dull Bordeaux, but got a mind-dazzling wine (after long discussions we settles on the aroma (and taste) of boar in a mushroom sauce, but a very rich sauce. At the same time extremely elegant and strong.

  69. February 28, 2008

    Katherine

QOTD: I don’t know that I’ve ever had a reaction like that to a wine!

Love these head-to-heads. I’m learning so much from you, GV. And you should see Miss Vivian these days… sitting up like a pro, stuffing all sorts of things into her mouth. The latest foods on her palate: avocado, peas, and green beans. Yum.

  70. February 28, 2008

    xtrmtk

Love your PN reviews, we have the same tastes in cold region wines.

I hope you’ve tried a few Pinot Noirs from Tasmania. If you like the Central Otago pinots, you’ll probably like the Tassie ones as well. Examples I’ve loved: Freycinet, Dalyrimple, and Stefano. Good stuff being done down there. Some of their sparklers are getting pretty nice too.

  71. February 28, 2008

    Mario Salas

QOTD: 2005 Konzelman Estate Vidal Ice Wine – Just ethereal on how the nose, body, and finish all worked in unison to “bring the thunder.” Not too sugary sweet, and not too thick or acidic, but JUST RIGHT. Also, the 2004 Mondavi Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet….smooth fruit on the nose with a velvety feel on the mouth and a LOOOOONG finish, hands down one of the best Cabernets that I have ever had.

  72. February 28, 2008

    lifestooshort

dude, seriously, who cares about wine stuff? “Hey Timmy…” the 3rd grade 30 y.o. nutjob is what we all log on for. But you knew that, right? ;D

Great show. I love me some Pinot Noir and I’m getting on that mailing list as we speak.

QOTD: 1988 Corton Bressands from Domaine Chandon de Briailles. Amazing focus, minerality and acidity.

  76. February 28, 2008

    Tom G. of the CKC

Ugh, what was there only like a case of this stuff in stock?

QOTD: None that have made me react that way, yet. The closest was probably the 2003 Ramey Diamond Mountain Blend.

  77. February 28, 2008

    Josh in Burgundy

QOTD:Actually tonight I had an amazing Echezeaux Grand Cru 2002. Too bad it was a gift from a friend and the winemaker no longer makes wines, but man was it unearthly good stuff.

Thanks for the “just joshin ya” reference that I know you did just for my sake

  78. February 28, 2008

2002 Foxen Foothills Reserve. I had one bottle summer 2007. I’m holding another for next year. It is a great mix of new world/old world style.

QOTD: none makes me act the way you do at least not until I have drank most of it….first time I drank a opus one for a celebratory occasion maybe…

    GO Honey Dog!!

  80. February 28, 2008

    thisIslandEarth

GV – good episode. I tried to buy the CA Pinot from WL but it was history only 45 comments to the wind. SO, I bought the ‘06 directly from Phillips Hill. Even though you reviewed the ‘05 I had to give it a shot. I mean the last time you were that excited about anything was when Broadway Joe was hitting on Susie Kolber during the Jets/Pats game. If Joe can wear a fur coat on the sidelines, I can spring $40 on a bottle of Pinot.

  81. February 28, 2008

    DRHamp

    Really enjoyed the PN Head-to-Head.

Immediately went to the Phillips Hill web site and ordered 6 — it was not the 2005, only 2006 is available from the winery — hopefully it will be great too. Then did a search for the 2005 and found it and order 6 more — can’t wait.
    Love the Head-to-Head format!

  82. February 28, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: probably the Andretti zinfandel/primitivo – I think 2005, or the Rippon pinot noir 2002 from Otaga.
We have a couple of Amisfelds PInots 2004 that we like a lot.

  83. February 28, 2008

    James H

Best wine I ever had was 2003 Rasteau, Côtes-Du-Rhône Villages. French, grenache noir, and totally awesome. I day dream about that puppy.

  84. February 28, 2008

    Shad

I’d have to say the 2005 Lily Pinot Noir was the last wine to really wow me, which is interesting because I really dig Merlot and am tired of all the Pinot-Hype. Bias does play a part.

  85. February 28, 2008

    No92

Good show, “Hey Timmy!” Classic stuff. Full – time Lurker first – time comment. QOTD: I had an opportunity to barrel taste at Copain in March 2005. I had some of the assistant wine make’s private stash, a project he was working on, a syrah, best liquid to ever grace my PAL. Keep it up Vaynerchuk.

  86. February 28, 2008

    RonC

Very good episode. Too bad you don’t have any Phillips Hill in stock.

QOTD: Still haven’t found a wine I’ve flipped over.

QOTD—- a wine from St Joseph (2004) N Rhone WOW

  88. February 28, 2008

    Michael

    QOTD:
Heissenberg Gewurztraminer – for my ‘pal’ I can’t think of any more profound wine than Gverz, although the Treana Viognier/Marsanne is a close second, both of these made me think white wine is in many ways ‘better’ than red, and it all doesn’t have to be oaky chard or lemonade.

  89. February 28, 2008

    Christine

One of the best wines I’ve ever had was a 97 Brunello di Montalcino from a producer near San Gimignano that doesn’t export. My husband and I had a taste of the either 90 or 95 Brunello from the same producer that was phenomenal as well.

  90. February 28, 2008

    Utah

It never fails, as soon as I say: Okay, I can’t buy any more wine for a while … GV goes berserk over something that sounds right up my alley. So here I am, deciding its worth $20 to fedex to not have to drive two hours to the nearest store I found with the 2005 in stock.

QOTD: Probably a 2001 Borgogno Barolo that I still have a couple bottles of stashed away for safekeeping. I can’t say that my reaction was as animated, and I wonder if I’d react as strongly to it now as I did even then, as I drank it just last year, on a night that kind of sent my wine-lust on the full throttle ride its been on for the last few months (and finding this show just after christmas dropped a brick on the gas pedal).

  91. February 28, 2008

    Dominus

I’d be curious to see if any of the Vayniacs procur any of the Toulouse. I will make a feeble attempt very soon.

QOTD: Good question but I’ll have to say it was probably an ‘85 Opus I had about a year ago.

    Hey Timmy! :)

  92. February 28, 2008

Panther Creek Pinot Noir kicks ass. By the way, I do have one of the original wristbands so I’m feeling hardcore.

Great show today GV, love the battle format, well done. Gotta check out those pinot’s, wow, Anderson Valley is blowing up!
QOTD: Merry Edwards Sonoma Coast PN 2005

  94. February 28, 2008

    Dave Canada

Knew that you would bring up that Raptors game………an embarrasement of a game….who is Jamal Crawford????????? :)
    QOTD – 1990 Cos D’estournel…..blew my mind!!!!

  95. February 28, 2008

    Syrahhhhhhhhh

Awesome episode!!! I love these battles. Boomshaklaka I ordered two bottles from the winery and begged to be on the list. Thank you GVNC!

QOTD: I recently had a bottle of the 2004 Pride Merlot and it made me say the F word out loud against my will because it so good. Seriously.

  96. February 28, 2008

    C-BusWineMofo

Love Love Love the Pinot show.

    QOTD: 2004 Domaine Drouhin Laurène
Dundee Hills one of the best places to grow Pinot and Chard in the world.

QOTD: Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon 2005. Had it last night on a whim at Canyon Creek and it totally blew me away.

I know you like to call it the “silk alert” but I seriously think that “liquid velvet” sounds better, and totally applies to the finish on this wine. At ~$25 CAD (if you can find it) a total steal. If you’ve experienced Peter Lehmann Shiraz, think that type of finish, but with a lot smoother attack and mid-pallet.

    Syrahhhhhhhhh

As was mentioned below, they are selling the 2006 on their site, not the 2005. I bought them anyway. And they completely upped their production to a whopping 150 cases. ;)

QOTD: 2006 Crater Rim Akaroa Pinot Gris. A late harvest Pinot Gris from New Zealand, it was all marzipan, nuts, cooked butter, tangerine and pears with BEAUTIFUL minerality on the finish and stonking clean acidity. A brilliant wine.

WOW great match up today I could feel the thunder.
QOTD- 2002 Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon, I didn’t go quite that crazy but I was very happy with it so I bought a case. ( this is the first full case I have bought of any wine so it must have made an impression)

You definitely got me fired up GV!

QOTD: Elizabeth Rose Pinot Blanc from Bonded Winery #9 (Also put out Napa Wine Co, and sell lots of juice to “cult” wineries unknowingly to all of those freaks paying up the wazuu for those wines- get a life and start expanding your palates kids!). What an out of body experience!

There hasn’t been a wine in my newbie drinking career that completely surprised and knocked my socks off like the Phillips Hill evidently did to GV! Wonder if I could locate that around here… of course I looked and they can’t ship to MA, probably because we’re still Pilgrims.

So sick of wines that I can’t get in PA!!!

QOTD: Last wine I really, really dug and couldn’t get enough of was carmenere served in a Chilean wine flight at a local tapas restuarant. I loved it so much that I’ve bought every bottle of Carmenere that I’ve come across since hoping to have the same kind of experience. The 04 Terrunyo (Concha Y Toro) did it for me too.

I cannot get into pinot noir… always seem to love the nose but find the mouth feel boring and thin. Maybe I’ll have to work around the shipping somehow to get some of this and see what the fuss is about.

  114. February 28, 2008

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: The wine that totally rocked me and left me just wanting more was the Nickel and Nickel Lightning Strikes. Its a Cab/Syrah blend which is abnormal for them being that they are single vineyard, single varietal wines. This one just happened to be a mix up and instead of scrapping it, they decided to bottle it. Incredible mouthfeel with the best of both worlds from cab and syrah varietals.

    No Filtering

    Gary,

I have generally considered it to be a negative when I find “cola” in my Pinot Noir. That and root beer and sassafras flavors, which one can seriously get in California Pinot and sometimes warm Oregon years says to be me “over-ripe” and over-extracted. Where has the delicacy gone? A generation are growing up thinking that Pinot needs to be “BIG!”

I think you’re doing a cool thing, but “raisin” in pinot noir? In old vine zinfandel or port it would add complexity, but in this case, it goes along with the “cola” note in its messaging. If you like this wine, terrific, BUT what do you think Pinot should be about? For most pinot-heads, it’s not size and richness as much as the seductive aromas and finesse that come with a long hang time and interesting soil. Too much California Pinot these days tastes like Syrah to me and the public is growing to expect that. Be sure to clarify for your viewers, Gary not only what is there, but maybe what is missing from big pinot noir. I commend what you are doing overall. I like your honesty and enthusiasm.

QOTD: Nothing that has completely knocked my socks off, but I had my first bordeaux (Beaulieau comtes des tastes, 2001) that was unlike anything I’d had before. Bold, old world, and DRY -evolved for a couple days at room temp! My first tannin monster off the bat… but smoothed out very nicely. Can’t wait to open some of the 2005’s a few years down the road!

2005 Domaine de Marcoux – awesome stuff, let it decant for a couple of hours..heavenly.

Hey Gary, ever think of incorporating some kind of blind tasting into a show? I think it would be neat for you to have some bottles brown bagged and try to guess what you are sniffing and drinking. Maybe instead of brown bags, do a show blind folded. Have Vayniacs vote for what you should drink. Just some ideas.

I like this weeks format. Good stuff as always.

Anyway, the last wine that blew me away was the McPrice Myers L’Ange Rouge Grenache that you featured about a month ago. Nice episode today- it was quite thundertastic! Thanks for taping them in advance, us Vayniacs appreciate a daily dose of the Thunder!

QOTD: I’ve never had that type of reaction with a bottle of wine yet. I guess the closest I’ve had to that experience would be a white table wine from Tuscany that I had while eating at the Accademia restaurant in Florence. It was delicious and was a bit pétillant, but this could be form my frame of mind at the time!

i love when you feel extreme love or hate for a wine. I don’t think i’ve ever had a wine i’ve reacted that well to, but i’m still part of the CKC. I was really shocked at a recent taste of Dow’s non-vintage “Fine Tawny Port”. It taste exactly like raisins to me. i don’t like raisins.

Hmmm…just ordered some of the Toulouse from the winery – but 2006 not 2005. I’m wondering how much the vintage will change the wine and the yield is much higher as well.. certainly worth a punt anyway, thanks Gary! Last wine that blew me away – would have to be the Laughing Jack Limited Three Old Vine Moppa Grenache 2005. Amazing purity and flavour.

Awesome! I got 3 Amisfield and many other Central Otagos. I’m with you on your opinion of them, and witnessed (tasted) them first hand!

My younger brother beat me to the punch, and already called up Phillips Hill to order. The owner told him he was in the middle of watching the show!

I called my brother up to yell at him for not including me! Anyways, he’s calling them up tomorrow morning to add a couple more bottles for me. :-) Hopefully the 2006 vintage is comparable.

QOTD: A couple big WOW’s for me… 2005 Waterkloof Merlot Peacock Ridge and 2005 Boudreaux Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon.

I (and I’m sure most other vayniacs) really appreciate that you, once again, sat down to tape an entire week’s worth of videos! I love ending my day watching your show.
I will keep an eye out for Anderson Valley Pinots…but right now I’m kind of stocked in the PN area, so I will let someone else get the 05 Philip Hill.

you know, Gary, “Sniffy sniff” doesn’t come across so well when you don’t say it so enthusiastically, like today’s episode.

QOTD: What’s the last wine that knocked me out like the 2005 Phillip Hill Toulouse?

Answer: The 2005 Toulouse. Confusing? Not really. Phillip Hill sources grapes from Toulouse. I absolutely love Anderson Valley Pinot wines. I make about 5 trips a year to visit AV, which is one of the most gorgeous, beautific micro-valleys in the world – that I’ve seen.

Last time I visited the Toulouse Estate vineyard, I had an opportunity to try a vertical tasting of their wines from 2002 through 2006, which was a barrel-sample. The 2005 vintage stood out like Gerard Depardieu’s nose, but in a distinctly good way. I loved it and bought way more bottles than I should be able to afford. To be clear, I’m talking about the 2005 Toulouse Vineyards Pinot Noir Estate bottling.

Gary, have you heard of this wine? Will you taste it on the show sometime? I think the 2006 will be stellar too from what I gathered from the barrel-tasting. The previous vintages weren’t too grand, or should I say small and pug-nosed.

QOTD: The last wine that really got my attention was a Jessup Cellars 2003 Napa Valley Cabernet. I decanted it for a few hours, rebottled it and took it to dinner the night after Valentines day. We had it with a Chateaubriand from cafe Artemis in Helena, Montana. The meal was incredible, the atmosphere perfect and the wine was mind bending…….well, almost. The Jessup Cab was complex, deep, refined and had a very long finish. The sommelier at the restaurant was extremely impressed with the wine and want’s me to bring another Jessup wine to the restaurant for him to try.

    Awesome show Gary!!
I love pinot noirs, and this show just got me all hyped early on a friday morning to try some from anderson valley.
QOTD: Rombauer Chardonnay, ‘05 I believe. very smooth, excellent balance with just enough kick to it

Actually I bought A Case of the 2005 Amisfield…Think It Had More Complexity and Better Mouthfeel than the 2006. As good as you are raving about the Phillips Hill I still think at $40 bones…the best combination for a Pinot Noir of Old World/New World Combined is still coming out of Willamette Valley Oregon in that Price Range. Try Some 2005 Beaux Freres Upper Terrace or One Of the Top 100 Wine Spectator Wines like at $30 2005 Erath Dundee Hills Estate Selection 91 Points Wine Spectator only 12.5% Alcohol…Mushrooms and Dirt For Days on The Nose!!. BTW The 2005 Amisfield Pinot was the #22 Wine Of The Year On Spectators 2007 Top 100 ! QOTD…. on your Recommendation the 2003 Cougar Crest Walla Walla Valley Reserve Syrah….Boy did that Wine Blow Me Away…I went On Line and bought another 6 bottles!!!

HI! Im new to wine library tv. Having a growing interest in wine and i find the shows great! I am catching up on episodes and wanted to ask a few questions…. How in the world can i get a wristband?!
And i want to pre order the Vayniac Cab and am not quite legal yet…. but will be in a few months… is there a way i could buy it on pre order and then wait until my birthday to ship?

Great episode! I don’t like the way those glasses look. Too wide at the top or something….like your whole face was getting swallowed in them when you took a sniffy sniff!

Pinot Battle: Comments that should be made is that Central Otago is the most southerly wine region in the world. One of the coolest as well – Long hangtime for Pinot Noir. The 2005 vintage in Anderson Valley is outstanding across the board. A definitive buy.
Can you comment on the clonal differences or do you feel that perhaps that conversation is too esoteric?

I was very pleasantly suprised by several dry German Rieslings this past Tuesday. I know that you only have great things to say about Riesling but before Tues I hadn’t found one that I liked. It’s hard to find quality and variety in the small PA state stores where I live.

There have been many out of body wine experiences but a few that come to mind was the 2003 Couvent Des Jacobins, my favorite of the 12 days of Christmas. The 2003 Avaton was great and the 2005 Ghisolfi Pinay was killer. Going back a year or so, the 2003 Pontac Lynch that was in a tasting of ‘04 Bordeaux which included several 2nd growths was spectacular, for me easily the best wine of the tasting. I bought it and a couple of cases of the 05 from you guys.

    This format is GOOD.

QOTD – Sorry to sing the same old song again, but Chateau Musar 1999 – even though it was 8 months ago now. A South African Chenin Blanc, Rijk’s Private Cellar 2005, came close at Christmas, definately the best white this year.

QOTD 2006 Belle Vallée Pinot Noir Reserve, had it with a very well prepared duck dish. First Oregon Pinot I have had in quite a while and it reminded me of while I used to be such a huge fan. Sure 40 bones is a lot, but this one brought it.

I have had the 05 and 06 Amisfield and liked them a lot. The Toulouse sounds amazing. Went right to their site and bought some. They don’t have a mailing list but you can buy their wine (usually its the other way around). Sounds like they also have another one “Opennlander”, that they charge a bit more for. Could it be better?
Gary, you are right on about Anderson Valley. Especially 06.

Well, I added my comment before waiting to hear the QoD. Two wines that did that to me recently (having a similar reaction) were:

    * 2002 Château de Flaugergues
    * 1999 Louis Bernard Vacqueyras

Some of the greatness was the company I had for the sampling, but a lot of it were the wines as well. Yum!

I am a big fan of Anderson Valley pinot and have been buying from Navarro for many years. And the place is great to visit too. QOTD – I had two different Molly Dookers last night at a restuarant that exceeded my expectations. I am not a big fruit bomb lover, but these both were excellent, especially for the price.

Last night we went to a dinner party and brought the 2005 Chateau Les Secrets De Cardinale St Emilion that Gary recommended on a previous episode. Let me tell you, it was positively orgasmic and practically life-altering. Well, maybe I exaggerated a little about it changing my life, but I did order another half case as soon as I got home. It is absolutely incredible.

I just wanted to let everyone know I was able to find the 2005 Phillips Hill Toulouse Pinot Noir at a place called The Wine Shop in Healdsburg, CA. They only had 10 bottles, I bought 3 of them.

    There number is (707) 433-0433.

The last wine that made me go completely nuts (which is basically what you did), was the Mitolo Savitar Shiraz ‘05. I’ve never had a better shiraz, and I can almost still taste the aftertaste after two months. Brilliant.

the best wine I have ever had… and am now buying as much as I can (which is not much due to finances lol) is a 2005 killer bee cabernet sauvignon. Killer bee is an exclusive to wine styles wine stores. I know I am new to the wine game, but this wine is honestly the best wine I have ever had so far.

  253. March 3, 2008

There are 2 wines that made me react that way recently…the Rosso di Altesino and the Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. I was very excited when I drank both of these.

QOTD: The 2006 Cinghiale Pinot Noir from Del Dotto Vineyards in Napa. Like $EX in a glass… A little pricey at $75 bones, but that’s how I roll.

Toulouse is one of the most famous vineyards in the deep end of Anderson Valley. Look for other great wines from this site by MacPhail, Baxter, and Toulouse vineyards.

  260. March 6, 2008

    Mr.Ambassador

    Loving the H2H competition!

The last wine that I went a bit crazy over was Zanzibar Winery’s “Sandra” red blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah). The winery is located in Oregon (they use the Owen Roe facilities) and grapes are sourced from Horse Heaven Hills AVA in Washington. I also really love the Boudreaux reds from Walla Walla valley.

  261. March 6, 2008

    Tommy Vernieri

QOTD: I don’t think I’ve ever been that excited about a wine. Sounds good though, 100 cases seems crazy. I think the Jessup 2001 Cab. was the wine that I was most excited about it when I tasted it, but it was not really exciting at all when I had it with dinner rather than at the end of a day of tasting.

  262. March 7, 2008

    Andy

2000 Delas Freres Hermitage Marquis de Tourette. I was somehow even more amazed later when I learned that that is (in theory) at best halfway up the quality scale in the Northern Rhone. Wow.

  263. March 9, 2008

    Dan-o

I have to say that I 2 wines have done this to me recently.
    1) Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir.
    2) Chateau Quinault L’Enclos 2000 – like drinking chocolate covered berries.

One other wine that I had was from a friend of mine’s brother in law. He lives in CA and makes wine on the side. He made an awesome Syrah that really blew me away. I am looking to get a case of that wine.

  264. March 11, 2008

Gary – we ordered a few bottles of this based on your recommendation. We were not disappointed!

Thanks for the tip. Just ordered 3 bottles from them and can’t wait to try it. The 1982 Leoville La Cases 1982 that was opened this weekend. What a killer wine.

Qotd: The last earth shaking wine I tried was an oregon pinot from a small producer called Matello. Their Whistling Ridge North single vineyard is down right amazing, and at 30 bones I feel a steal. Only 70 cases, and I don’t think they have a web presence as of yet, but WOW.

  269. January 8, 2009

These battle royals are fun and I hope you do more of them in the future. Even though I probably cant find them cause this show is nearly a year old, its fun to see you point out the gems for us. At least someone will be enjoying them. QOTD: Cant remember. I havent been drinking that much wine lately ( at least ones that made me go WOW!) because Ive been buying ones to cellar. That ends now. Next time I go to my wine shop Im dropping 80 bones or so and getting like 6 wines to drink now.

I haven’t thought about Quick in a long long time. I haven’t even had chocolate milk in years.

Gary – I think you should do a show regarding wine / cheese / food and well being. What is the difference between being happy and perhaps not as healthy as you could be, and being healthy and happy as a result of your healthiness.
