    Cool…3.

Gary, you think Craggy Range is similar to Clonakilla?

QOTD: Mom is coming up to visit, so we’ll be going out for a nice dinner. Hmm…maybe I’ll take a nice Pinot Noir with me… :-)

Another interesting fight, keep’em coming Gary!

QOTD: incidentally for this weekend I planned a duel of 2004 Louis Mousset, Blason Rouge, Crozes-Hermitage (a little bit cheaper then today’s episode wines, but also 100% syrah from France) vs. some syrah from Argentina, still unknown which one – any recommendations in the 16$-20$ price range?

I just got back from a 4 day visit to Napa. The 5 cases of wine that I purchased are showing up, so I’m drinking Napa Cabs, Zins and blends this weekend. Probably lots of them!! Whew Whoo!!

I only have the first two of the three wristbands….waiting to get my 3rd somehow!!

The 5 finger punt thing never gets old. :-o (Like Mott’s little laugh in the background…lol)

MMM – nothing like a little wet paper and toner ink notes in a wine. Gotta love that – bet RP, JS or ST have never done that – way to keep changing the wine world GV!

The last horseradish nose I had (with a little rubber in it) was a syrah – a very memorable nose!

QOTD: Not sure, prolly visit Argentina or Chile.

I loved the DB Bistro reference! I have had one of those burgers–amazing!

    Nice. Love the head-to-heads.

QOTD: This weekend? Cheap white wines. I tend to ignore the bottom of the price barrel, so I’m takin’ a spin through a few to see if I can find anything. Which I have. Barefoot Pinot Gris – lemon, grapefruit, and fuzzy peach-fest with a solid mouthfeel for $7.50 CDN, which means you can buy it in the US for $0.25 USD, of course.

QOTD: I’ll be going to a 25 winery, tasting event, here in Santa Barbara!

About a month ago, I got to enjoy a Craggy Range, Te Kahu, Gimblett Gravels Vineyard, 2005 and was really blown away by it. I’ll have to pick this one up as well!

  35. February 29, 2008

    Eric A.

Great show today. Craggy Range Le Sol is one of my all-time favorite wines EVER. Can’t thank you enough for putting it on the Thunder Show today and, I agree, it’s a tad expensive (most folks sell it for $65 or more — I’ve seen it for $130 on a restaurant list!). However, while on the palate there are definitely wines that deliver just as much for half the price, I’ve never had a wine with the aromas this one has. That’s what makes this wine worth it to me (even if I’d have to cash in some stock or something to be able to afford a case). Also has some chocolate flavors that everyone I’ve introduced this wine to has loved.

I agree with Edward: Black… Pepper… RULES. Does anyone know of other black-pepper-aroma wines? I love, love, love ‘em. Like in a “love to see cracked-out photos of Britney Spears on the internet” sort of way. Just can’t get enough.

I’m feeling lucky, and proud, to be in the club as an owner of all 3 wristbands! Unfortunately, that alone is not reason enough for celebration (sorry Gary) so I’m not planning to open any special bottles this weekend. I will take a peak in the basement and grab whatever looks like it will be “fun.”

  46. February 29, 2008

Another great show – I just tracked down the Pinot from yesterday and looking forward to it arriving.

    Great show.

QOTD – Visiting friends, so taking the d’Arenberg The Hermit Crab 2005, a 1998 Ribera del Duero Reserva (Tamaral) and maybe my Insignum 2001 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese.

  59. February 29, 2008

    Andy & Edie

QOTD: Going out to The Rex here in Billings with my wife Edie so I’m not sure what we’re having yet. She really like’s Sauvignon Blanc and so do I, but I really like everything and she’s not as much into reds. I haven’t found a kind of wine that I haven’t liked some bottle of. I usually drink about 2 bottles a week with Edie having a taste or two at dinner. I probably like Cabernet’s the best, but my favorite type of wine is probably Chataeuneuf Du Pape (not sure on spelling, but you know the one right :) ) Any Rhone wine I’ve tried has been delicious.
Anyway, great shows this week! That must have been a marathon to do them all in one day.

  60. February 29, 2008

Phooey. Those wristbands haunt my dreams. So, I have none of them, since you don’t ship to PA (I don’t blame you).

P.S. Forgot to mention. From an aesthetics point of view, can you move the WLTV/viddler logo from the bottom right to the top left of the screen? You have so much “stuff” over there it gets in the way and moving it will balance out the screen.

I’m hurting for a wristband. I ordered and requested one last week, but it wasn’t in the boxes when I picked it up! I’d have been so disappointed, if I hadn’t been so busy unpacking wines, and peeking in the secret pack for March 4th!

This weekend, I’m trying to find a $10 bottle or two to enjoy, out of what has become a collection that’s getting a little out of control. A quaffable california cab right now (Green Groves), and an Italian wine that I can’t think of the name of right now, but that’s been banging around my kitchen for a while.

  89. February 29, 2008

I have no clue what I’ll drink this weekend, maybe a cabernet sauv tonight, open up whatever goes with dinner tomorrow. And Phillips was sold out of the 2005 last night, probably sold out of the 2006 by today!

    Great Show!!!

Ive got the two most recent wristbands. I wish I could get a hold of the first one in black. That’s the one I want the most. When I started watching the show I was the ultimate lurker and didnt really care to participate in anything more then watch so I skipped out on the first one. Looking back, Im super pissed about that. (any chance u wanna send the original wristband to me so I can have all three?)

QOTD: Going to a Domaine Maume tasting tomorrow here in Houston. Besides that, Im really thinking about opening a bottle of Darioush Viogner tomorrow evening.

Wristbands? I have the first two. I oredered some of the special deals from the 2 year aniversary, I put in the wristband code, but I didn’t get a wristband in my shipment. What gives?!

  100. February 29, 2008

    Deano

Gary good episode. I HAVE ALL THREE WRISTBANDS FTW!!!! I will email you some photos too.

Is this a playoff system, or is that it?!! God, this is just like college football.

    QOTD: Laphroaig 10 yr ;-)

WoooHooo! Now we get wine tricks too.
QOTD: Grochau Cellars Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley and a few others.

  107. February 29, 2008

    Mike L

I also enjoyed this weeks’ shows. I would be happy with one side by side a week, maybe even throw that in with questions on Fridays. That would be totally kickass with me.

QOTD: I’m hitting the grocery store tomorrow for food, but I think I’m going to pair up an albarino with some broiled tilapia or flounder.

    We shall see.

  108. February 29, 2008

OH HELL YEA I HAVE ALL THREE!!

    Harley Stan

    Great week of shows.
QOTD- I am not sure yet, I am debating between a few bottles and it may come down to closing my eyes and reaching into the wine fridge and drinking the first bottle I touch just for fun.

  110. February 29, 2008

    thefanjestic

Qotd 1: I have all but the original – and I have extras of the other two – so if anyone has an extra original wristband and is willing to trade – e-mail me at jamesawilliams81@yahoo.com – and Thank you! GV if there’s anyway of getting an original wristband let me know!

Qotd 2: Tohu Sav Blanc – decent wine – little bit of alcohol coming through on day 2 of being openned.

  111. February 29, 2008

    Chateaunoname

Tonight, a 2002 Arrowood Syrah. Tomorrow, the just released 2004 Robert Young Scion. I would drink that one tonight, but I think it will need to decant for a few hours. Yup, I got all three. I think your right hand was getting bigger at the end of the show from the pressure of all three on your arm.

  112. February 29, 2008

    David L

Tonight, a 1997 Spanish Tempranillo Teofila Reyes and then a dessert wine. Vin De Paille 2003, Jura region France. I don’t know what the other couples are going to bring but they always come big.

  113. February 29, 2008

    TJB

QOTD: I’m trying a 2006 Chateau La Tour Rose Blanche Bordeaux.

  114. February 29, 2008

    chenrys

Wow, those both sounded like great wines! Loved the show.

QOTD: We’ll finish up a Big House Red and a Bogle Petite Sarah that we opened and maybe something else…not sure what.

  115. February 29, 2008

    Will Lurk for Food

Sancerre. It’s 80+ here, and I am getting into French SB, thanks to GV!

QOTD – I drove over to Leavenworth and picked up a few bottles of Boudreaux on Wednesday, so sometime this weekend I want to try one. I’ll probably pop the 2004 Syrah, but the 2006 Chardonnay looks murky and intriguing.

  117. February 29, 2008

    Panosh

Heading to a wine and food party this weekend, but we have finished off most of our “special” bottles. May still have a few Stags Leap Cab stashed in the bac, if I do this will go with us.

  118. February 29, 2008

    BargePlus

Well, I only have or had one wristband as my wife has confiscated it. She is a picture framer and sometimes applies what is called a French Wash technique to the mats, using colored inks. The wristband prevents any natural body oil from her arm or fuzz from her blouse from getting on the matboard as she works on it.

In short, GV wristbands are not limited to changing the wine world!

  119. February 29, 2008

    Panosh

Was hoping to get the new wrist band with the anniversary pack but haven’t heard anything on the order yet. Not going to make the 3rd at this rate.

  120. February 29, 2008

    Neil D

Good stuff Gary; love the show, eight days a week.

QOTD: 2006 Brick house Select Pinot Noir.

  121. February 29, 2008

    Antony

If we’re feeling on form, could be the Waitrose Blanc de Blancs – an absolutely astounding Chapangne from a classy UK supermarket. Blows the badges and brands to bits. I wish you could check it out. If we’re in more subdued mood (been a busy week) maybe a Bandol I’ve got stashed and Match of the Day.

  122. February 29, 2008

    Kristen

QOTD: Kickin’ it new and old world style.
Now: Big Fire Pinot Gris from Oregon
    Later: Montressor Rustigo from Veneto

  123. February 29, 2008

    Tina Smith

qotd-unfortunately, have a bad cold, so won’t be sniffy-sniffing anything!! Two nights ago (pre-cold) had some amazing Walla Walla Red Blends. Favorite was from Spring Valley Vineyards called “Uriah”. Yum!

  124. February 29, 2008

    Ben F

GV I am not a CKC but i like the CKC price point.. We need to roll a CKC week!!! Hey I don’t have any wristbands and i thought there was going to be something special for the face book entry…
QOTD: I have a wine tasting coming up so many of the following will be sampled…

  127. February 29, 2008

    Skye

loved the head to head shows this week.

we’re having a bottle of chateau pesquie quintessence 2004 with dinner tonight – your recommendation. looking forward to it.

    have a great weekend!

  128. February 29, 2008

    Big D

QOTD: We’re drinking some Vieux Os (from Schrader) Zin/Syrah blend – usually delicious.

Good episode. You reminded me of a Root1 cabernet from Chile that I tried a couple of days ago. It had the most unusual nose I’ve ever sniffy-snifted. It was extremely vegetable, with a strong celery stalk component and even a little flora and mint thrown in. The palate didn’t do much for me though, rather pedestrian. I hope you had a good travel week.

  129. February 29, 2008

    Oregon Sipper

QOTD: Mt. Dew??? No vino for this weekend.

Loved the paper trick, definitely going to have to use that to impress the wine tasting club friends…of course they all watch this show already…bummer.

  130. February 29, 2008

    Ivan C.

qotd- 2006 Mitolo Jester Cabernet, 2003 Taja Jumilla Reserva

Fun week. I like the head to heads. Any concluding thoughts?

QOTD: DC offline is this weekend. Can’t say what I’m taking … it’s a surprise.

  133. February 29, 2008

Great shows all week, Gary. I just received my wristband, awesome!

    QOTD Probably the Bordeaux Rose!

    Saftig

Great week, Gary, well done. QOTD: No drinking this weekend, big soccer tournament, but lined up for next week, brooding Syrahs, dark and mysterious.

  136. February 29, 2008

    NB_SPAZZ

A good week, but now I bummed that I’ve only got the latest wristbands.
QOTD: Balletto Vineyards Pinot Noir Estate Bottled (2004)

Qotd: going to enjoy some 2001 La Nerthe Cuvee Cadettes,I hope it came out of hibernation!

  139. February 29, 2008

    Benjamin-VaTech

QOTD: If you read this, your gonna hate it. I’m drinking 06 yellow tail Cabernet Sauvignon, and only because you mention it on your show at least once a week aka “I want you to go out and try new things so that you’re not drinking yellow tail EVERY time you go out.”

Well shit I’ve never drank yellow tail before, thought if it warented knotice as a standard-fruit bomb-value driving wine I should give it a try.

  140. February 29, 2008

    Anthony L.

QOTD: Hosting a wine tasting for a small group of friends this weekend and we’ll be drinking 6 beauties purchased from the wine library. Should be a lot of fun.

  141. February 29, 2008

    John M

Best Syrah I have tried in a while is Montes Alpha Syrah 2004 from Chile $18. I have been sampling a wide variety lately and tonight I’m back to what I enjoy most California Cabernet. Opened a bottle of Justin 2004 and I’m in my comfort zone.

  142. February 29, 2008

    Kdawg

QOTD: I’m gonna rock some 03 and 04 Torrione Petrolo’s in a head to head and on sunday I’m gonna try the 05 pasodoble red to see if it’s anywhere near as good as you were pimping it :)

  143. February 29, 2008

    tarheel17

QOTD: I am (hopefully!) getting to drink, or taste, the Le Parrain Cab by Betz at the release party. I’m getting there early just to make sure!

  144. February 29, 2008

    Joel M

    Keep rocking GV,
I am drinking a 2000 St. Supery Meritage, Napa Valley

  145. February 29, 2008

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: 2005 Chateau Haut Montaud. *shrug* Not all that great, but it’ll do. It’s not Sutter Home….

  146. February 29, 2008

    OmarG

QOTD: R.H. Phillips Syrah…since I can’t afford these two beauties!
Gary? You sure the first wine didn’t taste a little like PAPER???

  147. February 29, 2008

    David Masi

Anxious to try the Puech Haut Clos Du Pic. I only have the first two wristbands…old school, I guess. Tonight will be a 2004 Bastianach Vespa Bianco, and manana 2003 El Nido Clio.

  148. February 29, 2008

    JayZee

Yes, I have all three wristbands and, yes, I’ll be sending you a photograph.
QOTD: I’m not sure what we’ll be drinking this weekend. but it has to pair well with the bison prime rib that we will be serving Saturday night.

  149. February 29, 2008

    Rachael

QOTD: 2004 Curtis Heritage Cuvee Santa Barbara. Grenache 50% Syrah 19% Mourvedre 18% Cinsaut 13%. A little known small producer of Rhone-style blend that’s inexpensive, honest, and yummy.

  150. February 29, 2008

    CoolHandLuke

I don’t know what I will be drinking. This Sunday is the local wine shop’s 1st anniversary so they are having a celebration. So I will be at their mercy.

  151. February 29, 2008

    Grapedigger

Great show G…I am trying tomorrow the 2006 Ch Kefraya les breteche ..Cheers

  152. February 29, 2008

    Kirk (AKA: Slave2thevine)

Gary….I don’t have all three wrist bands. I’m hoping I can fix that eventually…but for now I’ve just got the initial one. As for a Syrah that has OBVIOUS black pepper and is more affordable. Try 2004 Cristom “estate” Syrah from Oregon. It should be around $30.

QOTD: I’m not sure…but I’m going to pop something when I get home tonight. It’s been a long day. Maybe I’ll pop another 02 Burgundy…or maybe a rose. We are due to get a big storm tonight…so I’m staying in one I’m outta work at midnight.

  153. February 29, 2008

    Glen... winecrazy.com

I’m drinking Black bart Syrah…thanks to you know who.

I unfortunately don not have all three as on my last order of a case on the free shipping, they FORGOT to send me my free wristbands. And PROMISED to call me back and NEVER did….. So, I only have ONE type.

So, if anyone is listening, I need my NEW ones I was dissed on, and a black one as well.

    :)

  154. February 29, 2008

    Sev

Fun show, I love Mott! Always nice to see him on the show. Really interesting match-up since New Zealand is one of the last places I would think of for Syrah. Australia, Cali, and even South America all seem more obvious. But that is why we love you. Always bringing things to our attention. I wish I had all three wrist bands. Just got my first this past week actually, don;t worry I will send you a pic soon!

QOTD: Drinking some organic/biodynamic wine on Sat, and hopefully one/two of the wines I ordered from you guys. Really excited to try some Bordeaux Blanc!

  155. February 29, 2008

    Danny C

QOTD: Not sure what I am drinking this weekend…I’ll figure it out!

  156. February 29, 2008

    MrJCG1

QOTD: Between my wife and I (plus guests), we go through about 20 bottles of wine a month. I’ve recently started buying a case of a single wine and experimenting/collecting the other eight or so. The Case of the Month for February is the D’arenberg D’arry’s Original Shiraz/ Grenache 2005 purchased at WL. A very nice wine which, for the price, would be tough to beat.

  157. February 29, 2008

    Albert

QOTD: I still have a Hermitage that I’m drinking through at my house, but this weekend, Chateau Ste Michelle 04 Merlot for an easy drinking new world red and a for a white, an organic 04 Skeveldra Sancerre by Domaine des Quarterons… it’s got this hugely effervescent mouth feel with that acidity just like a Sierra Mist… not as sharp as Sprite, but it’s got the bubbly of the Sierra with the lymon of the Sprite. Weird stuff, very refreshing with my gf’s spicy yogurt salad dressing (thai chilli and greek yogurt!)

  158. March 1, 2008

    tuscanbob

I’ve got some 2001 Muga Rioja Reserva opened right now. Bought the last case of that from my local wine monger (we just don’t use the word ‘monger’ enough). Drinking so beautifully right now. Big time vanilla in this wine without the effects of the dreaded ‘monstruo roble’. Tomorrow is another day. Depends on what we’re cooking up.

  159. March 1, 2008

    Moselman

Finally got a Wild Goose riesling which we’ll be trying, followed by a Rollingdale Pinot Noir Late Harvest 2005 (yummy). Sunday probably back to a side-by-side of two Merlots – a Cap Fleur ‘05
and a Jackson-Triggs NV (Yeah, right, Premier Campbell, a non-vintage as a 2010 Olympics Official Supplier wine)!

  160. March 1, 2008

    Kevin C

Hey Gv, Saints fan thanks for JV. Know he didn’t work out that great in teh 3 – 4, but he’s a young stud who should be hitting his prime in the black & gold! We haven’t had a good middle LB in 20 years, he’s a very welcome addition!

QOTD: Mission Hill Syrah (I beleive its 2004)from Okanagan region in Canada. My first Canadian Syrah so it kind of goes with today’s theme

  161. March 1, 2008

    E

QOD: I deserve something very special this weekend, but right now all I have open is the ‘03 Chateau de Mignot from WL … if I didn’t know better, I’d swear this stuff was a California cab … just on the good side of fake, a nice comforting gin & tonic kind of Cab.

  162. March 1, 2008

    kaybee

No $50 bottle for me! Probably a H3 Cabernet if I can pick some up tomorrow.

  163. March 1, 2008

    Yoni Rabkin

QOTD: Nothing! We have three nice bottles left in the pantry and we are giving them all away this weekend…

  164. March 1, 2008

    dave from Osaka (thunderball)

Great show today…gonna be drinking 2004 Kanonkop Pinotage until Costco runs out of it! That stuff is killer for the price ($18 here in Japan).

  165. March 1, 2008

    Scott

    Best show of the week!

It was great getting to meet you tonight, and I really enjoyed the live taping (even if the wine wasn’t ideal)!

QOTD: Whatever wine we had at FOWA and Nikki Beach!

  166. March 1, 2008

    Queazel

First time poster, long time viewer.

QOTD: This weekend I am drinkin the 2006 Black Opal Shiraz Cabarnet. I have to say that as far as my inexperienced palate is concerned, it is an excellent wine that can be had for cheap! I am an older CKC at 29 years, but things here tend to get better with age right? :)

I have to throw it out there, my wide and I found to today that we are expecting our first child! How cool is that?! Nothing like a nice wine to celebrate!

    Love your show, thanks!

  167. March 1, 2008

    Lyn S

QOTD: Whatever I got on the last free shipping deal. Nearest wine shop is 4 hour away!

  168. March 1, 2008

    Josh in Burgundy

Heading to some friends for the night so I am bringing a bottle of Simi 2003 Landslide Cab from Cali to introduce them to a little California love. We will also be drinking a 2000 Savigny les Beaune. Not bad eh? Do you believe it is March 1st?

  169. March 1, 2008

    Neil

This weekend it’s the 2005 Solaris Cab Sav. Weird stuff. Bizarre horseradish nose and chocolate on the palate. A little awkward. I scored it 84. It’s nothing compared to the J. Lohr 2005 Merlot which I just finished. This one was the bomb and I scored it 94. Paso Robles is hot.
Mott! Link it up…but you can do better than “It tastes like wine”…

  170. March 1, 2008

    Phil M'Glassup

Going for the Danjean Berthoux Bourgogne Rouge 2005 as an accompaniment to a meal of salmon and lentils in a mustardy sauce. I bought it from wl before I GV panned the wine. Hope he was wrong on this one.

  171. March 1, 2008

    Stuporman

Long, long, long time lurker, first time poster.

QOTD: Logan Pinot Noir 2007 (Australian)- never heard of it and can’t find it on the Wine Spectator’s wine ratings page so I am interested to see how it is. Recommended by my local wine merchant who has never let me down (forever indebted to him for introducing me to Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Pora Riserva 2000).

  172. March 1, 2008

    Bill & Wendy Wilcox

Good stuff! Wendy and I realy like this head-to-head format.

Whether the wine tast-off results are win, loose or meehhhhh, its a great learning experience.

    Keep it up!

    RANDI

    GARY!
I dont have ANY wristbands…I thought you were shipping me one with the past orders I placed…but nuttn! :(

QOTD: I will be consuming some Kosta Browne Pinot Noir

  175. March 1, 2008

    Sassodoro

QOTD. Hard to say. Depends on what Mrs. Sassodoro is cooking. Last night it was roast chicken, roast eggplant slices with dollops of ricotta & marinara, spanakopita, and asparagus. So we tried a couple of Grenache-based wines: 2005 Guigal Cotes du Rhone and 2005 Argiolas “Costera” (from Sardinia). In general, I’ve had pretty good luck with 2005 Cotes du Rhone, but the Guigal was only ok. The Argiolas was more interesting, a little fuller bodied, more supple texture, and notes of earty-eggplant and olives. Can’t wait to see what Mrs. Sassodoro does tonight.

  176. March 1, 2008

    Fiorentina!

Me thinks I will be drinking a Rosso de Montipulciano and a Gavi. I haven’t had these wines before, so I kind of feel like going outside of the box and trying something new.
    Have a great weekend!

  177. March 1, 2008

    Aldownunder

1996 Charles Melton Nine Popes GSM from the Barossa, and it’s bringing serious thunder…

  178. March 1, 2008

    Matt

Lovin the head-to-heads! maybe this can become a weely standard?

QOTD: as it is expected to hit the mid 70s here in Big-D (Dallas) its time to try the Gruner Veltliner 2005 from Gobelsburger (Mott, Link it up!) on my brand new patio set. The bottle is in the fidge chillin now – happy Saturday to the Vayner Nation!

  179. March 1, 2008

    Steve

First time I got to see Mott: seems like a genial, teddy bear of a guy. Not what I had pictured, however. For some reason, I was imagining Mott as a 20-something skinny skater-type dude. Loved the show. I’m not drinking at all until Easter, gave up booze for Lent.

  180. March 1, 2008

    randyshakes

I am drinking some Argentinian Malbec this weekend. I didn’t get my wristband either on my four pack. I even requested it in the comments of the order form. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to start a letter writing campaign until I get one.

  181. March 1, 2008

    Robin C

QOTD: Saturday night we’ll probably have a 1997 Freemark Abbey Bosche because we want to drink it before it goes into hibernation for the final time. (we resurrected it this year). Sunday we’re going to a food and wine and music event: Red Wines and Blues. There’s bound to be a couple of good wines there and I know that the food will be fabulous – several very good restaurants are presenting.

  182. March 1, 2008

    Rolf Lydecker

Just enjoyed a bottle of Paige 23 Syrah with my girl. Yummy.

  183. March 1, 2008

    stephen

QOTD – drinking a Rudi Schultz Syrah from South Africa.
A bit bummed about the Craggy Range as I am a huge fan of their S.Blanc and thought their Syrah would have brought much more thunder. You made a good point though when you said the French one was more your style and if you had to splurge 50 bones, the New Zealand wine for certain palates might be the way to go. Love the head to head themes, keep it up

  184. March 1, 2008

    TommyBoBo of WI

    QOTD:
going to ba making a rague lasagna and opening up a 1999 Valdicava
Thanks for another great week of FREE!!!! eps! It’s not going unappreciated.
    :- )

  185. March 1, 2008

    joel delon

hey gary close to home with this puech haut coteaux du languedoc but this winz isn’t the expression of the intuition of a winemaker it’s rational wine made by the team of roland (a body builded wine !) but like your head to head idea i have the intuition that a blend of concentrated syrah with carignan blanc or why not chasselas would be great why not trying this year at masdelerme family vineyards…

  186. March 1, 2008

    karenp

QOTD: A friend of ours, Bart O’Brien, started a winery almost 10 years ago in Napa. We were involved in the production of his 2000 O’Brien Family Merlot which was an atypical merlot, big bold and beautiful. We opened one of our last bottles last night and were happy to see that the wine was still wonderful, less fruit forward but taking on a greater complexity than a year ago.

  187. March 1, 2008

    Nickyb85

QOTD: for last night I (and several of my friends) had a decent bottle of Tempranillo, as well as a West Texas pino noir, and a bottle of chard/torrantes! A great night was had by all, just a bunch of CKC keepin it real.

  188. March 1, 2008

    Stumpy

Gary-loving the comparisons-watching only since Christmas but buying all sorts of stuff I had long ago moved away from just to get out of my rut and finding some hits and misses but well worth finding cheap and good wines.

QOTD: Opened last night with dinner a 2005 Cab Franc “La Cuvee du Pere Leonce Chinon”. Everyone in the room had the same impression… Peanut Butter? Yeah, Peanut Butter and cloves on the finish. Not delicious, but really, really interesting.

Later after dinner a ‘99 Sauternes thats been laying down for a while. We each just took a swig b/c we knew we wouldn’t appreciate it at that point. Can’t wait ’til tonight.

Great show (as always). Long-time Syrah fan, constantly amazed that variations on the nose, even from the same vintage. Anyway, I got REALLY excited about the 2004 Bordeux show and have taken it a bit further. I’ve started hunting down 2004 Bordeux varieties from all the regions (France, Chile, Washington, Oregon, California, etc.) to do a “Thunder-tasting!!!” I’ll let you know how it goes.

I’m working the weekend, so not too much wine for me. Had a Greg Norman Cab-Merlot with dinner tonight at the hotel.

So MY QOTD–do you think that people rate their wines within their experience level? I mean, my developing palate is gaining experience within my price-point, and I’ve only rated one wine a 94, and one a 92, with the rest falling somewhere below those; yet I see 90’s + all day long in so many public forums.

Follow-up QOTD–should we vayniacs try to be cognizant that there’s an entire world of wine out there when we’re assigning a rating, or is rating within our experience ‘world’ acceptable?

One thing is for sure–at least we’re enjoying wine.

QOTD: Friday night my wife and I had over for dinner a consortium of 8 purchasers of a 1983 DRC Romanee Conti offered at a charitable wine auction last year. Each of us brought very good wine for the cause. We started with hors d’oeuvres of smoked trout on endive with a cream horseradish dip and Humbolt Fog cheese with homemade olive bread accompanied by 1990 Roederer Crystal Champagne and 2005 Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet “Clavoillon.” The first course was lobster/corn chowder accompanied by 1988 Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet “Les Combettes” and 1999 Bonneau du Martrey Corton-Charlemagne. These wines continued with a Winter Salad with toasted walnuts. The entree was slow-roasted (4 hours) duck halves with creamed cheese grits accompanied by the 1983 DRC Romanee-Conti (which was way better than the reviews indicated), 1988 Leroy Vosne-Romanee “Aux Brulee,” 1982 Chateau Gruaud-Larose, and 2005 Girardin Bonnes-Mares. Dessert was Apple Crepes with caramel sauce accompanied by 1975 Chateau Climens Barsac. To say the least, we all went home pretty happy campers!

first time write. just want to say what an absolute treat it is to watch your show. I drank a Sanctus St. Emilion 2001 Grand Cru Bordeaux this weekend with a rack of lamb. In your show you mentioned finding a 25$ wine from Australia that had a great nose and flavor. A personal favorite is Tir na Nog. I was wondering if you had tried it and could give me your insight to compare with my notes.

Great Show! A co-host on Fridays wouldn’t be a bad idea. The rest of the week all we need is you.

QOTD – This weekend I drank a number of wines, my father is all about Cali wine and he opened a 2001 Groth Cab which was so young and it needed 2-3 years of time in the cellar. We also drank a 1999 Trefethen Oak Knoll Cab that was so tired and haggared, it tasted like a leather shoe filled with cigars and topped with a couple dashes of hot sauce. Buyer beware of the shelf life of Califorina wines.

    QOTD:

What I drank on the weekend along with the fellah’s throwing me a bucks day (after paintball):

1x 2006 Brown Brothers Tempranillo (magnum, 1/2 used as sangria base)
1x 2003 Wirra Wirra `The Angelus (aka Dead Ringer)` Cabernet Sauvignon
1x 2004 Banrock Station Red of some decription
1x 200? Shiraz Cleanskin – fruitbomb all the way, but so much better than YT
    1x Pirramimmma Digby Tawny Port

The The banrock station was not memorable nor that nice, the Wirra Wirra was exceedingly good (and what I started the arvo on), the banrock not so good the others drinkable and the port was a brilliant capper to the evening.

This would be a great first episode for any new Vayniac to see (tell your friends!). This weekend I didn’t get a chance to open a bottle, but I did buy some lemonade from a kid with a stand, and it was…meh…a little Crystal Light on the nose, and kind of off balance with the sugar. I’d give it 88 pnts. At 50 cents per little red cup, i would have liked to see a better effort…

  250. March 3, 2008

    Roro

    Paris,

In response to your post below, as far a Chile is concerned the obvious choice would be an Almaviva, 93pt WA and WS. Even though the 05′ got better ratings at 95pt WS and 94pt R.Parker. For under 20 bones, the Palo Alto Reserve Red if you can find an 04′. This wine is a 90+ pt. effort, but all vintages i’ve tried have been pretty consistent.

    >>Great show (as always). Long-time Syrah fan, constantly amazed that >>variations on the nose, even from the same vintage. Anyway, I got REALLY >>excited about the 2004 Bordeux show and have taken it a bit further. Iron Man

The 2004 Palo Alto Roro mentioned is a good wine, it tastes like real wine as oppose to $10 Cali wine that taste like watery cough syrup. 90 points is kinda high, I think 88 points is where it is, but it’s a solid, solid wine that goes very good with food, I guess if I owned a wine store, I’d definitely sell it with a 90 point rating.

QOTD: 2006 Clerico Dolcetto D’Alba, 2006 Two Hands Angel’s Share Shiraz…not balling like GV, but maybe that will change this weekend.

QOTD: Gary, I’m pumped to say that I tried my first Barbera on Sunday. I never heard of the Barbera grape till WLTV. I liked it and will seek out more. I went with a small group on the Brandywine Wine Trail in South Eastern PA. A winery named Va La Vineyards had some nice Wine and cheese parings. They had a nice Barbera and I enjoyed a blend containing the Sangiovese grape. Over all we hit 3 of the 6 wineries on the trail and Props to them for arranging such a nice “Passport” event this month. With their passport you also get the opportunity to taste from a couple barrels and experience wines in different stages of the process. Very cool! We even got to sample the same wine in a 1yr old barrel and a 4yr old barrel to taste the impact the barrel age has on the wine. It was loads of fun!

A week late I know but if you want a retardedly obvious pepper nose Syrah I actually drank one tonight: Havens Cellars 2003 Napa Valley Syrah. I got practically nothing but white and black pepper for about two hours from opening the bottle. Pretty crazy stuff, and under $15 locally.
