    Great Show!!!

I’ve been listening to internet radio on Pandora for about 2-3 years now. I love that website.

QOTD: I dont know if I have an internet obsession right now. It was Pandora when I first got into it. Right now, I just visit the same few sites like digg, woot, wine.woot, and WLTV. Thats pretty much it for me.

Cool show with the variety…even though they didn’t turn out the greatest. I was curious to see what you thought of that Mourvedre.

I was a big Pandora fan about a year ago, but moved away from it when the whole internet radio laws were trying to get passed. I now have upgraded my Sirius to Premium Internet, and listen to it all day at work–worth the extra $3 a month, IMO.

    QOTD? Its the WLTV, baby.

I’ve been hanging around on the internet in one form or another for so long, it feels so rare to find something as new and exciting as this show. This is the one thing I never, ever just skip over in Google Reader after I get home from work.

Though, there’s one other really terrific thing I should be pointing people to, head over to: http://www.playingforkeepsnovel.com. The podcast of the book may be done, but that doesn’t mean you can go back and listen from the start, its wonderful novel, read by its author, Mur Lafferty, in 15 parts.

Though, as I’m listening (a week late, mind you) to the last episode of that, I’m stuck looking for a new place to find some quick podcasting story fixes.

Good show, Gary. Kudos to Weir for trying something different — and you for putting it on the show.

Regarding the Lynmar, I like the Russian River chard, but their killer chard is the Quail Hill Vineyard chard.

I’m also a fan of some of the d’Arnberg whites. I think you might find The Hermit Crab to be an interesting wine and an exceptional value.

QOTD: watching the election evolve on the RealClearPolitics.com polls page (and on InTrade.com)

    Hi Gary,
I am a new to the podcast – and I LOVE IT. I am now a vaniack – not sure that is how you spell it – but I am a proud vaniack – I am going to spread the THUNDER. Thank you for being you and sharing your sniffy sniff with us. I am enjoying trusting my palate and the sniffy sniff – just adds so much to my wine experience.

QOTD: Current ‘net obsession, Google Earth, is an extension of a general obsession with maps/geography/places/armchair travel. Earlier obsession was MacNN forums, but finally tired of a couple or six buffoons of the Glen Beck ilk. Just got over that when I chanced on WLTV, which more than nicely fills the void.

  73. March 3, 2008

    underivy

QOTD: I’m prone to procrastination, so it’s easy for me to get “obsessed” with just about anything that keeps me from doing what I ought to be doing. http://www.orisinal.com is fun, or I can sit and search Google or Wikipedia for random crap for days on end. Pandora is definitely cool, but I usually stick with Rhapsody b/c I also like to take music with me on my phone. I end up using it a lot. I’ve found a lot of music I wouldn’t have otherwise found just by browsing Rhapsody, and it’s also nice that it helps to keep my portable playlist from getting too stale. Also, http://r33b.net/ ……

  74. March 3, 2008

    Thanks to our Vets!

QOTD. Absolutely, the Thunder Show. It is a must watch for me. My QOTD is, what could the 16 internet wine video shows possibly be that rank ahead of WLTV. I honestly can’t name a single other wine video show on the internet. How could there be 16 others????

  75. March 3, 2008

    chenrys

Sorry you weren’t more impressed with the wines today. But you did a great job assessing them and we appreciate that.

    QOTD: WLTV, 650motorcycles.com, xs650garage, espn.com

Hey Gary, most of us spend the vast majority of our “quality” time with wine on 86-90 point wines… so don’t be so dissappointed with them. 90+ is a bonus for most of us… especially if it can be had for $30 or less.

I agree that we should all quit buying the same wines over and over again. I hate talking to people that say they “love wine” and ask them what they’ve been drinking and they say “I always get ______”. The only way to make the LCB (in PA) stock different stuff is to drink it!

Classic indicators of a cali chard.

    Apple=malic acid
    butter=lactic acid

If you get to McLaren Vale, d’Arenberg has a fantastic restaurant. Eat out on the terrace if you can and look out over a beautiful part of South Australia. And it’s fun trying all of their wines with food.

Niagara wine? I keep trying them and can’t find anything I really like. Seems like the Rieslings should rock.

A buddy of mine turned me on to Pandora.com a couple years ago, and I think it’s great. What I love about it most is how it gives you a bunch of artists that you may like considering their similarity to the artist to whom you’re currently listening. I’ve discovered a lot of great new musicians and bands that way.

QOTD: My Internet obsession is now, and has been for a while, http://www.IMDB.com. I’m a film nut, and I really enjoy seeing various actors’/writers’/directors’ histories and what films they worked on and whom they’ve worked with. I spend a little too much time with that stuff, but if I’m ever on Jeopardy and there’s a movies category, I’m takin’ it.

I like the fact that you didn’t love all the wines. You need a show like this every once in a while. It shows that you’re still honest (which is the best part of the show and the hardest part to maintain as you get more successful).

I think by episode 420, you’re not going away, so you might as well paint the back wall. Your overall lighting will improve dramatically if the tone of the background is darker than your face.

Long time lurker, you made a reference in your episode today that was pretty funny to me. I work at a wine bar in michigan called dusty’s. The person who use to own it (now owned by his son) and opened the place was named dusty rhodes, I had thought you made a reference to him, because i had no idea there was a wrestler with the same alias, it was an interesting and comical tie between two different people.

It’s too bad the D’aremberg is a fruit bomb, the ‘tar and violets’ combination is something that I gravitate towards – I find it a lot in Nebbiolos…

The bit Gary said about “carrot flowers” reminded me of 4 years ago – I was cooking a lot, and trying to find uses for carrot tops and beet greens… also, I can’t believe that the Neutral Milk Hotel song that spoke of “the king of carrot flowers” is ten years old. If you’ve never heard this song, seek it out.

2005 D’arenberg 28 Road Mourvedre this is not Gary’s style hence the 89 point. I feel Gary tends to go more to the old world. I don’t feel he doesn’t embraces the new world so much that gets in the way of the direction he goes when scoring these wines. Mate I don’t think you have the happy medium needed to score accurately wines from the old and new world. Hey Gary, back off the free agent pickups. They are more over rated than a lot the 70 dollar fruit bombs that you pan on a weekly basis. As a Charger fan I can tell you there is only one way to build a team and its the way AJ Smith has been doing it in SD the last few years draft, draft, draft.

P.S. I’m still bent over that Jets playoff win at the Murph a few years back. Nice job by Marty giving the Jets their last proud moment before the current run of mediocrity.

Maybe it’s cause i’ve been feeling deprived of all my normal TV shows and the characters are my age and I can relate to them, but I’m totally into it.

Great show today Gary. Sorry you were disappointed.

Not sure what happened with the Lynmar.

92 points from Wine Enthusiast: “Really classic Russian River Chard, so elegantly structured and sleek, yet so flavorful. A wonderful structure of bright acidity and fine, toasty oak frames succulent flavors of pineapples, tangerines, green apples pears and minerals, leading to a long, richly spicy finish.” (10/1/2007)

    Where was the long finish?

With any subject that holds my interest (polyglottery, instrument making, pipe smoking, and so on), I always find a good forum (or two) to get involved with that are based on the subject. Forums are the best and most efficient way to learn things using the internet, IMHO. I also frequent a few blogs as well.

Greetings from Germany. I am new to WLTV. Gary thank you for being a wine demystifier! The show is great, this for me is the internet show I am watching. I enjoy the way you debunk all the snootiness around the wine world and make it plain what it is all about.

You sounded disappointed on todays show. So I would like to cheer you up in offering you what might be a new experience in wine!
As an Englishman I noticed that on scanning your back catalogue I did not find a single English wine amongst all those you have tasted. Now as someone who loves the aromatics in white wines and prides himself on finding new wine experiences I think you really need to amend this! For example go and find a bottle of “Chapel Down” Bacchus 2004 a citrus and fresh-herb drenched white.
    or a sparkling wine
1999 Nyetimber Blancs de blancs, premiere cuvee, West Sussex, England, it has an intensity of acidity that is typically English! It sours your palate till it gleams. But the wine is in perfect balance.

Also as I live in Franken in Germany I can recommend heartily the local wines as worthy of an experiment. Some of the greatest white wines ever made were Franken wines. (Hugh Johnson) Try Sylvaner from Johann Ruck , Hans Wirsching or Horst Sauer.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Not all wines have to be winners-otherwise, there is no excellence.
I have to disagree with Ben Janssen South Australia, who said, “Mate I don’t think you have the happy medium needed to score accurately wines from the old and new world.” You were quite clear about why you didn’t gush over this wine and told everyone to make up their own minds about “fruitbombs.” That is no less accurate an appraisal than reading Robert Parker or James Halliday and knowing their points of view. (Ben and d’Arenberg would probably be happier with their reviews.) Your honesty and consistency is what makes these reviews accurate and valuable. You save me time and money. Thanks.

Don’t feel bad, Gary. I learn a lot from the disappointments… probably more than from the winners. And when you are the one who is pulling the cork, it saves me the money.

As for Altesino. The better half and I visited them a few months ago on our Italy trip. They are great people. Very generous with their time and very humble. By the way, that winery is hell and gone off the main drag. I thought I must have been lost. Shame on you for trashing them! Just kidding. Keep it real. Maybe someday, you will visit San Francisco and we’ll pull the cork on a bottle of their ‘01 Reserve Brunello. Hopefully that will redeem them in your eyes.

You made me laugh out loud so many times this episode (favorite comparison: lanky 5th grader who is 6′9″ and can’t do a layup…I knew a lot of those types..).

QOTD: I’m obsessed with WLTV…but also facebook and blogspot. If you are into Pandora, you should check out LastFM. They have teamed up with Pandora to create PandoraFM as well. Basically, what they do is track what you listen to, whether on the Pandora radio, the LastFM radio, or even your computer player, like iTunes or Media Player, and feed it so you can share what you are listening to with your friends. So, for example, you could visit my profile on lastFM.com (clabuff) and see what I’ve been listening to recently.

I have a LastFM widget on facebook, too. It’s pretty sweet! Check it out:

When you said mourvedre was also known as Motaro I immediately thought: Mortal Kombat! Remember Motaro the ugly mutha with his whippy tail, hooves, and overall bad attitude? And then I could have sworn you said the nose had a heavy dose of violence instead of violets. Awesome.

Answer to QOTD: right now-definitely wltv. I discovered the show a couple weeks ago, it really fills a gap in my wine-life. It’s the only place I have for wine feed-back and discourse and wine-imagination; Gary–your enthusiasm is definitely a huge boost to myself and my colleagues. so you got that going for you. which is nice.

I had to give the screen a double-take at about 19:13 into the episode as the D’Arenberg bottle started moving by itself; was it the Ghost of WLTV or Mott using his newly found telekenetic powers?

    Gary et al,

If you love Pandora, you’ll love The Hype Machine (www.hypem.com), http://www.Last.fm, and hopefully RCRDLBL.com. Also free streaming radio with huge ability to customize your own channels or choose the songs you want. Even free downloads sometimes. If you need Internet radio like I do, you need to check them out.

Also look at the Forkcast on http://www.pitchforkmedia.com, if you like indie rock and some weird stuff.

my internet obsession is pretty much developing my own stuff. just got finished with writing my own blog from scratch. there are some very interesting technologies emerging that should change the face of the Internet… including the wine world.

MiroTV is a really awesome program, I guess that would be my obsession. Its basically a TV guide for IPTV. You can select from *alot* of different shows and have them downloaded automatically to the miro client where you can watch them. Very cool program. And, its cross platform.

Pandora never really gives me stuff i’m all that interested in. I’ll plug in one artist then it’ll give me another that i couldn’t possibly care less about hearing. I’ve been really jamming some SomaFM stations lately, good chill stuff.

I’m glad I/we only carry one of those four wines. I’ll have to do more research on the D’arenberg. None of it moves.
