Great show…Great to see the C du Ps getting some Vaynerchuck love. I am a big fan of Chateauneuf du Pape Mont Redon (1994). Had it at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant in NYC and it made my meal perfect.

Popped a Torbreck Struie this evening. What a FRUIT MONSTER!!!

  23. March 20, 2008

Great episode Gary. The energy level is unbelievable.

QOTD: I will be drinking a Brunello this weekend.

QOTD — LOL I guess I’m out from the start. I have four old inexpensive clarets from 13 I picked up earlier this month. Four have been good, five spoiled. I’ll try them in this order until I hit a good one (there’s a thread on this, btw). Can you even find one of these?

1978 Château du Marquisat (Cotes de Bourg)
    1973 Château Loudenne (Medoc)
    1978 Château le Tourt (Medoc)
    1976 Château Bel-Air (Montagne-St. Émilion)

QOTD: I’m not sure — I don’t, uh, have anything in my, uh, cellar, so we’ll see what happens. I’m “in the moment”, Gare, that’s how I roll. It will also depend on how much $ I make in tips on Saturday. :)

Wow. I’m speechless. What a great episode! I though I was a big marine sponge and could absorb that all in but I was super-saturated at the 15 minute mark and had to watch that episode again. Man GV, take a couple of days off now and again because when you come back to just raise the bar as couple more notches. Unbelievable. You nailed it.

As for the WTLV tee-shirt, I think that’s and awesome ideas. EXCEPT, you need to different versions.
1 – The “WLTV Widow – GV stole my man”
2 – “The WLTV Divorce – GV made my man spend the rent money on vino”

This weekend I will be drinking the 2004 Chateau Sansonnet to see if it REALLY is bringing the thunder like you say! Try THAT one. You did the ‘03 before but you claim the ’04’s are awesome, so I’m throwing down the gauntlet in challenge :-)

I had an 03′ Chante Perdrix on a blind date a long time ago. It made putting up with this crazy chick a slightly more enjoyable experience. She talked I drank, it worked out well for both of us. We never spoke again and I have a couple bottles of 04′ waiting for another dud.

QOTD: Whetstone 2003 Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir, and Domaine de Triennes St. Auguste 2003-yeah thats all you G-Man on the Triennes. I hope their both in good form, I am super jazzed up for both of them.

The wine links are wrong. 2004 Saint Jean Du Barroux L’oligocene wasn’t tasted on this episode…

Whoooo, you were on fire there my friend. My wife is a WLTV widow and her ears perked up from the other room when she heard that.

    John Farrin

Okay, I’m a little pissed at WLTV’s false advertising. It shows that the third wine being reviewed today was the 2004 St. Jean du Barroux L’Oligocene and it WASN’T. Seeing as I have had the 2003, and thought it one of the best wines I have had in the last 10 years, and bought a case of the 2004 because of my love of the 2003,well, you get the idea.

QOTD: 2004 St. Jean du Barroux L’Oligocene!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK. You’re officially killing me! You tag the St. Jean du Barroux on the video and link it. I see that and give you a thank you for finally taking up my pesty repeated requests. And then I look at the line up as I’m watching, and I don’t see it! Arrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Just to see if I can’t make you try it, I’m cracking one of the bottles I bought this weekend.

QOTD? What am I drinking this weekend? What do I hope you choose for your show????? the ‘04 St. Jean du Barroux L’Oligocene! I’m popping it tomorrow night and I’m sending YOU a tasting note. Join me!!!!

Great show, Gary. I’d caught you in snippets before, but this is my first episode to watch fresh. Loved your bit in Kathy Sierra’s SXSW talk – I was there in the room.

Fave quotes for this episode: “C’mon, Google – c’mon” re smell-o-vision. And the whole Dots candy sequence “La-la-la” bit.

Keep up the energy and the passion. The folks around the corner at my wine shop will be thanking you. ;)

  52. March 20, 2008

    Paul

GV you were on fire tonight. Brought the Thunder and Lightening!
This weekend it will be Shiraz, as that is what we are rolling with this month. The Jacob’s Creek Reserve and the Yalumba are rocking us right now.
Keep up the excitement, you are contagious.

  53. March 20, 2008

    ryang

great show. not sure what I’m drinking yet this weekend. but I have a question. On one of the first wines you said that is drinking well now but you would expect it to go into a “shutdown” phase for a year or so. This is the first time I’ve heard someone expect a wine to shut down in the future. What are the indicators that lead you to believe this?

  54. March 20, 2008

    garyh

great show! i’m pleased to see some wines from chateauneuf du pape reviewed. i have several bottles from that region, but the wines don’t always work well with my palate.

qotd: my girlfriend and i will be having the 2004 Delas Hermitage Les Bessards that you reviewed in episode 398. it’s the first time I’ve purchased a $100+ wine without tasting it first. should be interesting!
we’re also going to a riesling tasting.

Love the show today. I am new to the Vayniac community- just found out about winelibrarytv a few weeks ago. I never knew you could get great value out of wines as popular as Chat. Neuf du Pape, wicked excited! Ordered the secret 2 pack – cant wait till april 1st.

I agree Gary, excellent show. Woke me up, I don’t know if I will sleep tonight being exposed to all the adrenaline blasting through my computer screen.

Also, for the record, my wife thinks its cute that I watch the show and she loves you Gary, and hates wine. Figure that one out!

QOTD: Not sure what I will be drinking this weekend to kick off my vacation next week, but I will have to find something nice. Perhaps a Chateauneuf Du Pape in honor of the kick ass show today. Thanks GV!!

  71. March 20, 2008

    Kristen

Halleluiah! You were ON FIRE today GV! I loved the “starburst reduction sauce” image. Nice one. I had one of those “aha” moments recently…I was sniffy-sniffing the 2006 Trapiche Oak Cask Pinot Noir and I had an epiphany. It smelled like when you’d make Kool-Aid and when the Kool-Aid powder would rise up after you put the water into the pitcher. Needless to say, I found it not to be an enjoyable wine. It’s all about balance, you’ve got that right!

QOTD: Parents are coming in town. Going to show them more good wine. We’re gonna have the 2006 Domaine Des Cassagnoles, an Ugni Blanc from Gascogne. I’ve had it before, it’s a great QPR.

  75. March 20, 2008

    normanzo

QTD: drinking the Abad Dom Bueno 2003 Mencia (Bierzo). A nice dry Mencia at a reasonable QTP, less than $14. Will also try another bottle of Tiburzi Santambra 2005 Rosso di Montefalco…I’m still hoping you’ll cover some Rosso di Montefalco’s soon…preferably some with a little Sagrantino in the blend.

  76. March 20, 2008

    Bob Dobalina

Glad to see you back Gary. I’ve been a lurker for awhile. Thought I’d give you props for cranking out an incredible show day after day.

  77. March 20, 2008

    Brianna Vieira

Loved this one. Have been unable to indulge the wltv for a bit, but am back in the saddle and diggin it. Maybe there should also be a group for husbands who want their wives back… yeah thats right, I’m kickin it female style and I aint holding no glass of Yellowtail or Kendall Jackson.
QOTD: 1) 2003 Muga Rioja Reserva – yummy, unfiltered (mmm, sediment is hot), earthy and rich 2) 2006 Livio Felluga Pinot Grigio – delicate, clean and graceful.

  78. March 20, 2008

    Fangorn81

    Well!!

Looks like we got hit with a delayed blast fireball today!! (little D&D reference kids) I almost gave up…looks like judging from the number of comments I wasn’t the only one.

    But ANYWAY,

QOTD: I actually am not sure but, I’m going to the store w/ my dad tomorrow…I’ll let you know then.

  79. March 20, 2008

    Andrew H.

Gary, great episode. Your intensity is amazing. I enjoyed a great bottle of “2004 Casa Donoso Clos Centenaire” this evening with some homemade stew. It was truly amazing and proves to me why Spain has received so many good remarks.

QOTD: I am a college student and am planing on going out this weekend. I wanted to try something cheap and something that I have heard decent reviews about. This weekend I will be drinking NV “Pinot Evil Pinot Noir.” Although not close to the best in my cellar. This will hopefully be a lot of fun to share with a few of my friends.

  80. March 20, 2008

    Zk

I think I said this yesterday, but I mean it even more today. Solid? Its that kind of energy that keeps us coming back for more. Your tasting notes really brought the thunder today! QOTD: 2006 LOUIS JADOT BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES Combe Aux Jaques and Cave Spring 2006 Chardonnay Musque VQA. Great show, lets keep turnin’ the crank!

  81. March 20, 2008

    Zinny

Great show, Gary! I love the variety of wines you cover on your show and, thanks to you, am rounding out my cellar more than ever.

QOTD – this weekend we are doing a mixed grill and drinking 2 malbecs. The 2004 Château du Cèdre Malbec – Cahors Le Cèdre and the 2006 Achaval-Ferrer Malbec.

    Cheers!

  82. March 20, 2008

    Dave Scott

So will we see a “Cherries in Horseradish” t-shirt? Or maybe sell the cherry horseradish at WL? Dude, rockin’ show. I’m in for 4 of the 2005 Pere. Keep up the ass-kickin’!

  83. March 20, 2008

    Clinton

QOTD: 2007 Joie Rose (Pinot Noir / Gamay) with my wife (if you need me to ship a bottle from Canada, I can)

I wish I had a business trip scheduled to the States so I could buy a couple bottles of the Saint Jean du Barroux – sounds just my style.

    ROCK CHALK!

  84. March 20, 2008

    Grapedigger

Great show G…What an energy? This weekend I’ll be drinking a 2003 Bordeaux form Cotes de Castillon: Vieux Chateau Champs de Mars, and a dessert wine Château Septy Monbazillac 2000. BTW, You have note yet addressed MONBAZILLAC on the show yet. Happy Easter – Cheers.

  85. March 20, 2008

    Amber

LOL! “Crank the little monkey” Gary you MUST find ways to incorporate that phrase more into the show! I love it!

Though no love for the lonely forgotten 14th grape of CDP–Grenache blanc. :(

QOTD–2003 Fidelitas Optu Columbia Valley Meritage blend WA. WINE BABY! Though this winery is one of our little secrets now but it won’t be for long. Within the next ten years, they’re going to be like Leonetti/Quilceda Creek–crazy hard to find and priced liked a cult wine. I’m enjoying it while I can still afford it. :)

QOTD: I’ll drink 1997 Falesco Montiano. I kept this wine for a while and decided to open it up on my wife’s 39th birthday which is this Sunday. This wine had mixed review from the cellartracker user, so I’m darn exciting to try this one.

Chat Du Pape..YES! How can you not have fun with such great wines? Another great episode. Today i went to a big wine tasting and spit every single wine cause I had to go back to work for 4 hours after. I’m telling you that I had more energy then 4 cups of coffee combined. Is that where you get it from GV?

QOTD – I will be drinking Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz – Viognier 2006 thanks to you and to one of my great wine reps.

I love CNP. QOTD: You reminded me that I stashed a bottle of 1998 and 1999 Vieux Telegraphe at my folks’ house in Essex Fells, NJ a few years ago. I’m going have to break them out on Sunday for Easter. I’m looking forward to comparing them side-by-side to see if 1998 is really that much better than the 1999.

If you have them, you should do this tasting!!

  104. March 20, 2008

    Terp00

Bought this one yesterday (Wednesday) – wasnt crazy about it right out of the bottle, but 24 hours later (just corked it and put it back in the cellar)…very nice. Seriously enjoying it…

Actually, what’s funny is that I brought it out to drink while I watched today’s video, then realized you were tasting it! Good stuff.

QOTD: I’m going to visit my Aunt and Uncle and raid their cellar. As pretentious as it may sound I love Opus and will be having that (somewhere between a 1993 and 1995). I’ll also drink my favorite wine, Liparita Cabernet. Along with that I’ll have some 20 year Quinta do Noval. My family is a big wine family so this only touches the edge of possibilities. On Thanksgiving we had a Methuselah of Domaine Carneros Sparkling and finished it withing two hours (before 11AM).

Great show. I wish I could have the leftovers, every bottle had something to offer.

QOTD: For Easter brunch I will present my girlfriend’s mother with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot NV Brut which will make her very happy. My GF and I will drink Diebolt-Vallois Brut Tradition which we like better and is cheaper so everyone will be happy.

Drank Pillar Box Padthaway Red 2006 during the show. A good WLTV companion.

QOTD: Burnly Rivanna sunset. A Virginia rose’ with just the right amount of sweetness to turn on non-wine drinkers. Every year my wife’s family gathers for a big dinner and Easter egg hunt(600 this year). And every year this is the one wine they ask me to bring. One of the few times I chill a wine. The juice from this grape is actually pink so the color of the wine is natual. Jerry the 2thdr

so weird. i watched all of the archived Chat de Pap shows last night. get out of my dome!

QOTD: I will be in New Orleans this weekend, so I think Hurricane’s will be
on the menu…could be the first weekend in a while that I won’t have wine.

Incidentally, the letter you read sounded JUST like what my girlfriend says. She and I watch your show at least once a week together…one of us will have ordered all of the wines featured on the show and we’ll taste with you. It’s certainly become a part of our relationship…OH, and you’ll get to meet the two of us on 3/29.

I loved the letter from that woman… My wife also makes cynical comments every once in a while (”uh… this guy again??” or “oh… your ‘mistress’ again”), but as you pointed out, she enjoys the new wines we are trying :)

QOTD: I have a white Rioja, Ostatu, which is viura/malvasia 90/10 blend, with no oak. I also have a California Cabernet, Ghost Pines, which is supposed to be the best value for under $20, according to the wine store I get my wine :) and the Can Blau 06 from Montsant (all good values for my limited budget :) )

  125. March 21, 2008

    T. Holland

GV, that was your BEST show in a while. Not b/c of the wines, b/c you brought the thunder!

QOTD: Going to see the rents for Easter and they usually serve Woodbrige or Yellow Tail (hurl!). I will have to make a stop off & find something less repulsive. Tried to drink some Woodbridge Cab over Christmas & it made me want to drive out to Cali & beat up the wine maker.

Lurker comin’ outta the wood paneling on this one! Long time lurker, first time commenter because 1) GV– you seriously brought the freakin THUNDER like you were on a QUIET RIOT reunion tour today! 2) nostalgia is fierce (spent a year of my life in Orange eating boar and drinking CdP and found that my pal freaks on grenache+ south rhone v’s. and 3) i’m marking my 35th year and answering the QOTD with a mean go getter of a PEPSI CHALLENGE: 2005 Owen Roe Sinister Hand stand a 2005 McCrea Grenache. IT’S ON!!!

thanks gary! thanks mott! thanks WLTV!

  138. March 21, 2008

    C-Lo

The energy on today’s show was why I first started watching WLTV; nice job GV. Lots of curse words dropped today though – keep in mind all those babies watching along with their parents man. QOTD: thinking about trying the Cuvée Terroir 2005 Chinon this weekend. One last thing: if you’re gonna make a t-shirt that refers to all the men leaving their women for you and WLTV, you better flip it and make one that refers to all the women that know their wine and teach the men what’s up! Keep it real.

  139. March 21, 2008

    kris miller

oh man… EPIC show today! no two ways about it. and with that said… time to crank that little monkey.

QOTD: a friend told me he bought a little PV (no other details given) for sat night, so i am on that. friday night is cupcakes and champagne, thats right the bubbles…. and cupcakes.

    smile, it’s free!

    Chris

GV–I know you don’t celebrate it but can you get an Easter episode for Friday??? I’m in charge of buying the wine for our party and need some advice on pairing wine with a ham dinner. All I’ve seen to go with it is riesling. I could use a suggestion for a red.

    Thanks

Goodbye Mr. Spalding! Great show Gary. Bringing the Thunder times 10! I couldn’t keep lurking after a show like that.

“It’s a goddamn Wizard of Oz in this wine world”

    “Slim-Jim!”

    “This makes no sense!”

I am going to have to buy the last one you tasted, I love sweet candy, over the top is going to be for me. I still haven’t bought anything yet, but I will be buying a good new-world and a good old-world when I do, to compare, and appreciate. I really love V8 juice, so I might like the old-world veggieness and BALANCE as well.

Great show today. The break did you well it seems, and the insane amount of comments of course.

  145. March 21, 2008

    Dave

You said radool again. It’s not that I don’t like radool, I just think that if you can smell SlimJim in wine that you can do a little better than radool. You need to amalgamate better words. Rad and cool is too easy. What’s next? Hipad from hip and rad? Yesool for yes and cool? If the beer drinkers at Miller Lite were able to come up with travishamokery, then the refined wine drinkers at WLTV should be able to come up with something better than radool, like… thundersnifftastic? Tastyseekoutable?? SillynessdoesnotmakesensepartyinyourmoutbombOzness??? Put your writers to work dammit.

    Nice episode!

  146. March 21, 2008

    Kdawg

QOTD: gary, I’m gonna be drinking some cotes du rhone and rueda. ahhh, interesting mix. but, the CdRs specifically I’ll be drinking are the 04 Guigal CdR, 05 CdR, and the 06 De La Janasse CdR. the rueda I’ll be drinking is the 06 Naia

thank you much for doing a value driven CdP episode and also very nice on calling out BrandonM for not realizing the sangiovese love. Just take a look in the TNs section to see how a few of us chi-town guys love the sangio when we had an awesome brunello fest

so, the real question is, why do you keep on shying away from Burgundy episodes(bourgognes don’t count). Step up to the plate and give the vayner nation some burg love. I try as hard as possible but we need to show them the light

  147. March 21, 2008

    Ryan

Great show Gary! I’m new to watching the show and have already learned alot. I think that we are going to have a 2003 Jordan this weekend, but I am going to need to pick up a few of the Chat du Pape’s to try after this show.

i’m hopping out to cali to spend the weekend with my whole fam! gotta love that. two my two bro’s, my two sisters (in-law is unnecessary), ma dukes, pops, and my beautiful nieces, the lights of my life, nola and saffron. i’ll be bringing a rose, being that it will be beautiful in palm springs– IL MIMO, a 100% nebiolo rose (?!?!). awesome. i’ve never had a rose with this much barnyard in it. had it a lot last summer, and i’m psyched to have it again and bust it out for the first time this season on easter. you gotta try this…

also, awesome show! brought the thunder for real. i was looking through past episodes last night and searched for chat du pape (cuz i tried it for the first time last week– random pick! (thanks to you inspiring me to expand my palate)) and all that came up was this costco kirkland episode. perfect that you did it tonight. thanks!

Hey Gary, just so you know, I (the wife) am the one who found you online and watches you every day and participates in the forums. . . my husband followed, but not as intently. :)

QOTD: we’re actually celebrating this weekend because Jeff gets back from 2 weeks in India. He’s craving two things, some bubbly, and a big-in-your-face red. I’m not sure if we’ll pop some champagne of if we’ll have some prosecco with brunch on Sunday. Saturday night, though, we’re going to be sipping the 2005 Amon Ra. Yum!

MY FIRST QOTD!!!! Ok, Ive lurked long enough!!! I love you GV (in a strictly platonic, I still love my woman, kind of way) Your enthusiasm got me today, you rocked it…or was it the 2006 Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere that Ive drunk while catching up on the last couple of episodes. I think it was both! Definitely. So, I drank the 2006, couldnt find the 2005 which was rated so high, but the 2006 was good, especially at an on sale price of $9 US dollars at my local Kroger store, here in H-Town Texas (thats Houston for all ya’ll).

Ok, Im dragging this out. On to the QOTD….. Tomorrow, I will be enjoying the 2002 Wellington Syrah Reserve I purchased off of wine.woot the other week. Ive heard nothing but great stuff about it and am going to indulge!!!! Thanks again GV. Love the show. (Oh, and I promise my next comment will be much shorter. Like I said your enthusiasm got me tonight. Really pumped up!!)

QOTD Saturday, A friend is buying a whole pig and cooking it by digging a hole is his backyard and roasting it there.
I’m bringing a 2005 Teroldego Rotaliano from Cantina Rotaliana Di Mezzolombardo.
    It’s an Italian red.

Sunday is Easter. It’s a family meal and my Grandfather and Father are responsible for bringing the wine. Last time, I took home a Leibfraumilch Qualitswein 2006 from Dr Beckerman

Tuesday, I and some friends are having our occasional bad movie night. Usually delivered Chinese or Indian food. I am bringing Kung Fu Girl Riesling 2006 from Charles Smith Wines in Columbia Valley, Washington. I bought it based on the name alone since it seemed like an awesome wine for Bad Movie night.

I am not someone that ever drinks anything, but you made me want to research wines and watch dozens of episodes of your show in hopes of finding you say flavours that I would be interested in experiencing.

Very excited about trying out a few wines in hopes of finding something that could work for my immature palette.

I’m drinking Beaucanon Estates Cab Franc. Gary your totally right Cab Franc brings the thunder. I am down with the dirt, the poop, and the terroir. Great show man.

QOTD: 2005 Two Hands Gnarly Dudes Shiraz, Barossa Valley – an absolute “hedonistic fruit bomb” if i do say so myself, but after all…I’M TRUSTING MY PALETTE!

Gary was inspired tonight! Great words and tempo to tonights show Gary.

I am gong to have a bottle of the 2005 von Hovel Estate Riesling Spatlese from Rudi Wiest. This baby goes for 14 bones and if you give it some air it will blow your doors off. ‘05 was a great year for Mosel Saar Ruwer and this baby has the weight, acidity, complexity and balance. Really a solid effort.
Very good with the spicy Asian take out for Saturday night.

I might also open a 2000 Eyrie Reserve Willamette Vally Pinot Noir, it should pair well with the obligatory Easter Ham on Sunday night. Probably would sell for about 40 bones right now, which is a bargain for premium Oregon(e) Pinot anymore unfortunately. Though entry level Pinot is becoming more available in the 15 to 20 range which is good to see.

  179. March 21, 2008

    dave from Osaka (thunderball)

Heheh…ya killed it today. It was a classic moment, my wife came home half way through and asked me why I was watching that annoying guy again and then like 10 seconds later you said, “I know the women are like, ‘who’s that annoying guy..’” Talk about timing, we had a good laugh over that. Anyways, loved the show as always! :)

I’m a usual lurker. comment every now and then. I know it’s hard to keep track of all your friends! Love ya Gary

    Have a nice weekend!

Another fascinating show. I can’t help but sense a little, just a little bit of snootiness in regards to “new world” wines. While they might not tickle Gary V’s fancy I think they have a big spot in the wine world.

  187. March 21, 2008

Hey GV,great show again, keep them coming! I’ve been off CDP for quite a while, the last few I had a couple of moths ago were rotten but you’ve inspired me to seek out some more. There’s plenty to choose from here in the uk all reasonably priced so may check some out this weekend. I’ve decided on two definates to share with the family this Easter weekend… a white bordeaux, Chateau Tertre de Launay and a Spanish Calle Mayor cab sav.
    Keep it going.

Talkin’ bout Coteaux Du Libron bringing some serious value thunder! OH YES!
It’s got the tobacco, bitter chocolate, bark, smoky meat and just a dash of the new worldy fruit to bring it to that beautiful balance of “something for everyone”. I KNOW this will kill all the other wines, hands down, point-by-point for value, enjoyment, balance, and mmm mmm goooodness.

Great show, my wife thought it was her favorite one ever. What energy, did you eat about 500 pixie sticks and just let the sugar rush flow or what? Loved it!

QOTD: We are going to test some apparently good QPR wines this weekend to see how many more we need to buy.

Perrin & Fils Vacqueyras Las Chrisines 2005. Wine Spectator 91 Points, around 17 bones. Are you kidding me, a Rhone at this price and score if it brings the thunder its time to load up.

GV…That Chante-Perdrix was sold out before the link was corrected and I, personally, couldn’t find it on the WL site. I was really, really, really hoping to get my hands on a couple of these. Heck, I even came to work 2 hours early in hopes that the link would be corrected and the fine CDP open for b’nezz. Alas, some of the more site-savy peeps beat me to it and gobbled it all up. Any more coming in. I called and put my name on a back order….as well as ordering 6 more from you guys (2 of the Pere Caboche btw).

Anyway…don’t mean to whine, but, this one wasn’t me snoozing and was really one I liked to get ahold of.

    Thanks for listening.

    SJ.

QOTD: Haven’t planned this weekend yet, was going to head to the wine shop this weekend. I was thinking a rose with the ham, but I’m also doing waffles and I’m unsure what goes with waffles with maple syrup.

Great show, Gary, and a first for me. I’ve had wines that you’ve had on the show before, but never so recently. Just had the Torbreck a couple of weeks ago at a steak house in Providence. My parents loved it, I was more on the fence. However, I will say it was much nicer when I brought home a little bit and drank a few days later. Thanks for your perspective.

This weekend, starting this evening my mom and I will be drinking the 2002 Enotria Dolcetto and the 2005 Vinum PETS Petit Syrah. I have never had either but the guy at the Wine Seller in WIlliamsburg Virginia, where we are vacationing, says they bring the thunder. We’ll see. :)

QOTD: We will be trying one of the 3 bottles I was able to find of the 2005 Phillips Hill Toulouse Pinot Noir. Can’t wait to give it a whirl.

    Happy Easter!

  231. March 21, 2008

    Antony

Vaynaic widdows – you kidding? Seiko and I watched this glorious ep’ huddled together against the radiator. It’s chilly here in the UK and drafty round our gaff but you and the wine are surely bringing us together. Snug!

Had a horrible cold so off the vino for a full week – Scotch, ginger and lemon all the way babes. This weekend, however, will be back in the crimson saddle, riding high with:

Vina Herminia Crianza 2004 – because I know its a great vintage, Waitrose (where I got it) are offering 33% off and don’t just put the duff stuff on sale (like Tesco)… so if it’s good might by a half case to stash.

Teichert Ranch Lodi California Barrel Reserve Petite Syrah 2006 – a rare US purchase because you guys tend to offer dismal QPR in the UK but I can’t honestly remember having drunk a single varietal Petite Syrah before (although I see this one is blended with the Sauzao grape?) and I figured it could be kinda interesting… but can you find it in Jersey?

    Have a good one!

QOTD: Something that goes well with lamb for Easter dinner. I will know what that is as soon as I’m finished w/ errands which include stopping at my favorite wine shop. Maybe if I’m incredibly fortunate, I’ll also find the Chante-Perdrix… Details to follow.

    Great episode!

Aren’t you being a tad discriminating???? What about the WLTV Widows???? It’s not only guys who sit in front of their computer screen an subject their spouses to the rousing introduction at full volume….BTW.

QOTD – This weekend, we are doing a ‘Bordeaux Deconstructed’ theme at the tasting center that I work at. I’ll be sipping on my fav – a little of that PV – oh yea babe – Pirrammima Petit Verdot

    Gary,
Thor never brought the thunder like that. Way to rock. I’m planning on coming to the party next Saturday, unless its too late to get in. If anyone wanted to share a ride from Brooklyn, please give a shout. I’m planning on renting a car, and would be happy to share – or if someone has an extra seat, I’d be happy to hitch. Hey Gary,
I found your show at the iTune Store looking for podcasts to learn from… So I downloaded all I could find, I’m well behind… I love wine, have read some books about it and love to try different bottles w/ my wife and friends. Still, my sniffy sniff needs a lot of education.
You have a great show and thanks for sharing your experience in Frace w/ us.. I’ll open a bottle of Baron De Rodrigo La Mancha 2006 from Spain…

Forget the “Big Ass Glass” my friend Gary. Straight pulls from the bottle. REALLY BRING THE THUNDER! Keep up the energy my friend.

QOTD; It doesn’t matter, cause it will be sitting with family in a restaurant on the outskirts of Vail (Minturn) getting super stoked to hit the snow in the morning.

Mmmm I love me some Châteauneuf-du-Pape!

QOTD: I’m drinking Champagne! Why?? My grandmother is turning 100 years old! YES, that’s right… ONE ZERO ZERO… on easter Sunday, March 23rd. We’re going to be having dinner at the Portland City Grill, and drinking a Magnum of Duval-Leroy Champagne Collection “Paris” (get it? Paris is my last name! and it’s a pretty, celebratory bottle), and also an André Clouet Champagne Brut Rosé (killer Champagne for the price, $37.50 and 92.5 point average on cellartracker). I’ll try and grab a picture of her and I with the bottle. 100 years is a pretty long time… think of what she has seen developed with her life (you know.. like the modern car). Best part is she’s 100% lucid, and walks around unaided, never uses a wheelchair, walker, or cane! A couple years ago I gave her a ride on my motorcycle… a cool lady, for sure.

I turned my wife onto the Thunder Show and she can roll with the Vayniacs but she still hasn’t emerged from the lurker status. She wrote a comment once and then got all self conscious and deleted the post. Not all wives consider themselves WLTV widows. I mean c’mon some people watch dancing with the stars or american idol, ptew, what’s wrong with a wine show? Completely a side tangent – I just pictured Gary V on Lost. Wouldn’t it be funny if they discovered another hatch and inside was Gary V taping WLTV everyday or the island would destruct? Just an idea.

QOTD: Something special maybe a 2004 REVERIE Rousanne.

Loved the energy of today’s show even though it came on late and I watched it technically the next day.

This show was great for me since I’m a big CDP fan. In fact, I have some of the Caboche 2003 La Mirande in my cellar. Your take on it was interesting and even the 89 rating didn’t put the kabosh on the Caboche, for me!

    GARY YOU KILLED IT!!!

Love the Rhone, love the THUNDER. This is what it looks like I’m drinking this weekend:

2001 Chateau Phelan-Segur Bordeaux (popping it for my Dad who’s coming into town to visit – we only get to see him once or twice a year)
2005 75 Wine Co. Sauvignon Blanc
    NV Zonin Prosecco
2005 K&L Cuvee Chateauneuf du Pape

and I’m sure tons of Wilson Creek Almond Champagne with the fam on Easter Sunday – because that’s how they roll and who an I to hate? Have you had this stuff?

Great episode today and thanks again for everything you do!

How about a QPR Cotes du Rhone episode sometime soon, eh?

  265. March 21, 2008

My first comment to your show was asking about the meaty, deli kind of smell and taste I experience quite often in wines. Was it “leather” that I hear people talk about? Was it “gamey”? NO! I too realized it was SLIM JIMs!

  266. March 21, 2008

What a show. Chateauneuf du Pape rocks !

Awesome, out of controll show! You my man are on crack!

QOTD: Went to a wine bar late last night and tasted five wines ranging from $16/btl to $65/btl, ended up actually liking the $16 best of all and brought one home with me, so I will be drinking a 2005 Dolcetto

  268. March 21, 2008

    Carlitos

QOTD. Today we are going for a Spanish themed dinner and we’ll do a couple of Riojas from the two different schools. A 1999 Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva and a 1994 Barón de Chirel from Marqués de Riscal. BTW, I didn’t really like the generalization about Spanish wines. It’s true, you can get them in all colors these days. But what you get here in the US is mostly the new stuff, because that’s what YOU (as in the US consumer) like! People in Spain actually are very traditional and very much prefer the old style.
Tomorrow I’ll probably take to our brown bag event a 1997 Marsanay 1er Cru and maybe the 1999 Grand Mayne St Emilion Grand Cru I got from you. But it’s going to be a great B-day party and we’ll have who knows how many wines there.

QOTD : Only have one bottle that I know I will serve at Easter, other bottle decisions are pending on the final menu

    2003 Saint Jean Du Barroux L’oligocene (library # 36278).

We got a few bottles after your review & love it. Without WLTV , would have probably never found it. For that, we are grateful ! Looking fwd to seeing more great wines on the show with time

Excellent energy today! I am sure my wife can relate a bit to the mail today, although, with time, she has become a full on Vayniac & watching the show is now more of a family affair.

Keep up the good work !

Interestingly, I am drinking 2 Chateau Neuf’s this weekend. Vieux Telegraph 1991 and 1996. I was disappointed in one aspect of this particular show. You only mentioned in passing the “dumb” phase these wines go through. This can be a big disappointment to new wine drinkers and the reason that all of my CDP’s sit for at least 10 years after the initial tasting. The dumb phase can begin anywhere from 3-4 years after bottling and can last for 3-4 years after that. So, either drink them new as in 2-4 years after airing them for 3-4 hours first or wait 8-10. I have had so many of my friends say, “What’s the big deal with CDP?” only because they drank them too late or too soon.

Wow, over-the-top, bring-down-the-thunder show. So glad to have you back Gary.

I visited the Torbreck winery last year. That was sort of like the guys flying in to spray Cristal all over the club – a seriously decadent experience. I loved it. I got to taste everything they make and for me the Steading had the best QPR.

QOTD: It’s Easter, we’ll have ham, and I’ve been waiting 9 months for this very weekend to open a bottle of 2004 Two Hands Grenache Aerope that I brought home from Ozzyland. Yep, it’s a Barossa fruit bomb. Yes it will be fantastic with ham.

One more thought – Please don’t drop the ratings all together. At least do something like I’ve been doing in my personal notes lately, rate with “Unbelievable”, “Yowzers”, “Yum”, “OK”, “Not worth it”, “Nasty.” We’ve got to have some way to compare and be consistent over time.

2005 Byron Chardonnay Santa Marie from WL, 93pts WS – a little nervous after cellar tracker comment “over oaked,” we shall see what this does with Lobster.
1997 Fife Cab – cellar tracker tasters citing this is drinking perfectly now. Throw it against a brick red filet barbecued with Hickory wood.

Gary, I already emailed you a few months back, but I’m watching also because of my husband! And yes, you charmed me. Awwww. :-)

We actually chose a 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape (1/2 bottle at 30 euros) to celebrate our wedding anniversary, earlier this month – because we wanted to “expand our palates”. And guess what? We LIKED it! So thanks Gary!

QOTD: because Gary keeps talking about how “boring” Yellowtail is, we’re going to have some of THAT this weekend. Just so we understand WHY.

  293. March 21, 2008

    Stefan T

Terrific show. Got to say its great when you get a theme going. Nothing wrong with jumping between dry, fruity, sweet, white, red etc. but one has got to wonder if you are just more in the mood for a type of wine on any given day.

QOTD: 2005 Chateau Pey la Tour bordeux.

    Keep it going.

  294. March 21, 2008

Gary, I appreciate you bringing the excitement back to the show today.

QOTD – I will be opening a bottle of 2004 Quilceda Creek Galitzine Vineyard this weekend. We have some close friends that are moving away and I wanted to dig deep to share the best stuff in the cellar. Wine really can bring people together and it is great to help celebrate those significant moments in life.

  295. March 21, 2008

    W Miree

Wow! Even if the wines weren’t “over the top,” you certainly were today…in a good way. Great show! You really hit it when you said that “balance” is the key to great wine, and many CNP’s usually have it.

QOTD: 1990 Ridge Monte Bello with grilled ribeye Friday night
    2002 Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet “Les Referts” with pan-seared Halibut-Sat

    Hey Gary,

I am a first-time comment contributor (sorry for all the lurking). I am just getting into developing my palate, and am thankful for your passionate instruction. Wish me well as I dive into the wine-world (budget friendly diving, that is).

    Have a great weekend.

  298. March 21, 2008

    BruceP

Hmmm. Not sure yet. It’s Easter, so probably dig something good out. I think a 2000 Barolo by Guido Porro. Also the 2004 The Foundry Syrah from S. Africa. People really need to drink more S. African syrah. It has its own taste which is neither northern Rhone or the fruit bombs of Oz and Santa Barbara. May also dig into the Pinot stash for some Merry Edwards RRV or Walter Hansel.

  301. March 21, 2008

I just reviewed the other comments, and saw the comment by Lawrence Leichtman. He was absolutely right about the “dumb stage” that many CNP’s go through begining as early as its 3-4th year and lasting from 3 to 5 years. Like Lawrence, I simply wait about 10 years after vintage before I drink them to be safe (I prefer older red wines anyway, so this is not a problem for me). Gary, I have never heard much of an explanation for this phenomenom, and would love to hear what you think about its cause.

  302. March 21, 2008

Well I wish that I could say that I am drinking something this weekend…yet, I’ve been on a “break” from wines…and increasing the exercise routine. In an attempt to live long enough to see some of my wines age…I’ll be heading to an industry tasting on Monday and that is what I’ve been waiting for. All in all I’m saving up my stash for my return to “the city” in May. So what am I drinking this weekend???? Water.

Local liquor store had no chateau neuf-du-pape! :(
Isn’t that sad? Only a WL wristband could make

    I bought.

QOTD: Kerschbaum Pinot Blanc 2006, my first Austrian Pinot Blanc!
My girlfriend now refers to you as my ‘boyfriend’ so I guess she’s starting to feel a bit like a widow (or that I’ve dumped her for you!). She doesn’t complain about the great wine she get’s to drink though so I guess she’s finding solace in the bottom of a bottle.

QOTD — Forchini Vineyards “Extreme” Dry Creek 2005 — Extreme sports, extreme dining [think Japanese blowfish]….and now extreme wine!?? Don’t worry….the only thing extreme about it is taste. Aged 20 months in American oak. We dare you not to like it.

I love the Chateaunneuf du Papes… and it was a great show. But I won’t open any from our (small) cellar cause wifey is out of town. So I will be going cheap. Some cheese, Tallegio unpasturized soft cow’s milk cheese from Italy tonight, with the Jonesy Port ($10) from australia. Tomorrow, leftover BBQ from Cooper’s, can’t decide white Domaine de Vaugon Vouvray Demi-Sec 2006 or red Badia Coltibuono Cetamura Chianti 2005. Sunday on the road cause somebody wanted a Monday morning meeting, eating supper somewhere between Richmond VA and Lexington Park, MD. Probably crab cakes and whatever white looks good.

That really is it Gary. I can actually feel like I’m tasting the wine along with you thanks to the magnificent way you can express the flavors and textures and aromas that you experience. Way cool.

I really liked your show tonight. I’m not sure what I’ll be drinking this weekend. Last night I made some new friends sharing wine on the first third thirsty Thursday and tasted some very interesting wines. It was very fun and amazing how much we seemed to have in common. Thanks for that. Thanks for your energy and enthusiasm.

Waited for this last night and never saw it till after the friday show- I’m a little late to this game, but qotd-wise I’ll probably pop an Estancia Paso Robles cabernet. It’s cheap, and I liked it last time I had it.
btw- excellent show, and Friday’s wasn’t bad either. Nice to see some value in CDP- hope I can find some in my area(ship to Ga. please!) Have a great weekend!

awesome show, I was a bit worried with the late post, but the nearly 30 minutes of pure energy more than made up for it!

QOTD: this weekend my mom is making salmon because my girlfriend and i don’t eat red meat (love you mom) so I was thinking a nice Pinot Noir. Possibly C&T Patio Pinot Noir, or Jamesport Pinot Noir from Long Island.

oh, you mean the wine’s I’m drinking… wine is more of a mid week thing for me. A bottle can provide a glass or even half glass after class each day and not be to much, so I can get things done. Anyway, good show, you rocked it. Now back to my Vay-Ner-Widow.

Drinking 2005 Patrick Javillier Chardonnay Bourgogne Blanc Cuvée des Forgets

Price 19.99, White Burgundy from Bourgogne appellation. I was told this will be a Meursault classified wine in the future, I guess the vines are not old enough yet? Anyways, the LWS said its great value because of that and should be great for Easter.

Wow! Loved the energy of this show. Definitely have to try a Ch. du Pape soon.

QOTD: Already started on a 2006 Chardonnay from the Loire Valley (Domaine de Bernier). Somewhat acidic but went great with a creamy cheese. At $11 it was cheaper than the cheese! A great value in my opinion.

    Gary:
Loved the show, but what did you think of the Chateau de Beaucastel compared to these guys? A bit better, maybe, but a lot price-er, right?
I ordered the secret two pack to try on 4/1. Bet you have something “fool”ish in mind for us!
This weekend, I’ll try Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages 2004 Cab. Sauv.
    Have a great weekend.

Wow! Freakin’ awesome show! I’ve been really busy with school and work the last couple of months and this is just the show to drag me back into ThunderDome. I just hope my wife and my studying don’t turn into Vayniac Widows, because I have a couple of months worth of shows to catch up on.

QOTD: Wines that I know I’ll be opening this weekend.
    1)2003 Chateau Mongravey
    2)2003 Muga Rioja
    3)2004 Jacopo Biondi Santi Sassoalloro
Celebrating my birthday and making room in my little tiny wine fridge for the ‘05 Bordeaux I just bought from ya. I dare you to get a hold of any of these wines and drink them with me!

Gary, I ALWAYS try to catch the WLTV Rhone EPs, and this one was stoked off the Richter with thunder, which was great. This was a fantastic lineup chosen by viewer. Totally agree with your review on the Caboche CDP (typically seems to have a beautiful blend of dark plum and violets) and the Chante-Perdrix is always one of my favorites for the complexity of bouquet and depth of fresh fruit + pepper and earth at a great price point. Ever since the 2001 vintage, the Steading has been one of my all time favorite Aus->Rhone emulators, but the last couple years seem to have been more forward fruit-bombish (e.g., less tea, earth, and pepper mixed in with the huge bouquet of rasberries and strawberries) which now makes me question for QPR whether or not there are not better choices. Interestingly I was just looking at the Steading in WL yesterday. A long time Vayniac, I appreciate your comment about Tony. Best wishes to you and your family this Holiday weekend Gary, Vinacull Vayniac

QOTD: I’m not sure what we are having on Sunday (Easter) as yet. What goes with ham? :-)

Oh Gary. My husband is a WLTV widower. It’s funny… right now my husband is on tour (he’s a musician) for 11 weeks, and we only connect on iChat. Miss Vivian loves to talk with her daddy on the computer… she giggles and coos and reaches for the screen. But today when I was watching WLTV Vivian was giggling and cooing and reaching for YOU! When she hears that “Hello everyone, and welcome…” she perks right up.

QOTD: I’m drinking some wine from the Finger Lakes! Swedish Hill Reisling, to be precise. It’s totally yummy.

p.s. GIVE UP THE SCORING. Wine isn’t math, it’s art. Find some other awesome way to rate wines. I’m going to mull this over and figure out a new GV rating system. I’ll get back to you.

  391. March 23, 2008

    Mr.Ambassador

GARY – You need to try the Zanzibar Cellars “Sandra” – Produced by Zanzibar Cellars in Oregon. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Syrah all sourced from Washington (Horse Heaven Hills I think). The wine is really tasty and creamy and if you sample it this weekend you’ll be sendin’ me a shout-out ’cause it rocks!

  392. March 23, 2008

    The Original Marc

I don’t understand the comments on the Mirande. I didn’t get the same stuff you did. Wasn’t a bad bottle, but it was one of the worst wines I’ve had, and I’m a CDP lover.

  393. March 23, 2008

    Sassodoro

Great show, Gary! Lots of energy!

QOTD. Sorry that I’m watching a few days late. It may already be too late for you to taste this stuff, if you feel like it. Last night (Saturday) Mrs. Sassodoro made a pappardelle Bolognese, and Sangiovese with some age on it seemed the appropriate thing, so I opened a 1999 Caparzo Rosso di Montalcino and a 1999 Fontodi Chianti Classico. The Caparzo was nice, with some hints of leather and tobacco, but not as wonderful as I remembered from previous bottles. The Fontodi, however, was an unexpected hit. It had this huge floral nose of violets and lavendar.

The wine for tonight, though, is one you should try: 2002 Dal Fari “Rutilum”. That’s a 100% Schioppettino from Colli Orientali del Friuli, in Northeastern Italy. Schioppettino is probably a new grape for a lot of Vayniacs, and I think it would be of interest, at least to Old World fans. “Rutilum” is Dal Fari’s Riserva bottling, and I find it complex and intriguing. (See http://www.dalfari.com/skedeing/SCHIOPrut.htm for their spec sheet on it.) I see that you don’t offer it at Wine Library. I don’t know where you can get it in your neck of the woods. Around here, the importer for it is Beverly Malen at Imports Inc./Chicago (email: info@imports-inc.com website: http://www.imports-inc.com/index.html). I do think you would enjoy it.

    GR8wine

    Hey GV,
Great show, great energy, you were almost manic, which is when you’re at your best. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to watch before the weekend because I’m a huge fan of CDP and would’ve loved to order some before it sold out (those are great prices!).
QOTD: after the fact, but we had a real fun blind tasting of Cab Franc’s, 2 from Virginia, one from PA, and one from it’s Chinon. We had a blast! The PA wine was the big surprise – it was quite good. The French wine was the least favored!
    Keep up the great work.

  395. March 23, 2008

    JayZee

Okay, I decided to have a 2000 Chateau du Tertre Margaux on Easter with my family. It was beautiful – smooth and structured – very enjoyable, even with the ham. ;-)

    hey Gary,

One of my favorite episodes of all time!!! This weekend we had the Chateau St. Michelle Reisling. Has anyone heard of it? Just kidding :) Sometimes you have to try the grocery store wines too right. It was actually pretty darn good with Easter ham. Hope everyone had a happy Easter and now I’m off to watch the next episode. Cheers!

QoTD: You’ve seriously corrupted me, Gary. We are having some close friends over from out of ConUS, so we will open something special- ‘96 Lynch Bages. Before your show we’d probably have had that yellar Kangaroo wine. Now, we look for an excuse to try something new and unusual. I’ve never had a “classified” Bordeaux, so I’m really excited.

GV – that show was rockin and rollin – like the car chase from French Connection or Al Pacino on RedBull…..

Funny that I watched this two days after Easter, when I had opened a 1985 Domaine Senechaux CdP…. Had explosive raspberry on the nose, with some cherry and raspberry and spice on the palate. Not much of the gaminess I’m used to experiencing with these wines, but very nice nonetheless. Did NOT go well with the ham (didn’t expect it to), but it did sing with the scalloped potatoes au gratin…

FWIW, one of the cheaper CdP’s I’ve enjoyed several times in the past was Cht. Saint Siffrein. But now looking forward to trying the Autards….

Wow, awesome show! Can we get someone to do a show that reviews Gary’s shows? That one absolutely brought the thunder! 93+ points from me.

QOTD: Might drink a 2004 Coldstream Hills Cabernet Sauvignon (from the Yarra Valley, Aus)

Wow that show was pumped like Canseco! Keep em comin GV.

QOTD: It’s all about the Bordeaux baby! I’ve been reading so much lately about the upcoming 2005 vintage and how amazingly perfect it was for the region, so I’ve been trying to taste as many as possible. A couple were disappointing for sure, but I am so amped about the Chateau Gigault Cuvee Viva that I’ll be popping this weekend. 91 pts WS at $21? Talk about QPR!

Great episode – catching up finally. QOTD: Turns out I randomly had that Chante Perdrix this past weekend. Not sure I felt the Slim Jim action – but I hadn’t seen the show yet, so I wasn’t focused on it. But, from what I remember, your notes are on point. Great focus and balance.

Great Thunder Show. Love the Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

QOTD: We drank lot’s of stuff:

    Saturday with Crab
    2004 Windy Oaks Chardonnay

    Sunday
1996 Hauth-Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett Riesling
2006 Domaine de la Petite Cassagne Costieres de Nimes Rosé

    With grilled lamb chops:
2003 Windy Oaks Proprietor’s Reserve Pinot Noir

Also, revisited the 1992 Russian River white table wine we did not drink last weekend and… not bad. I was a dry Muscat and went very well with the fig cake we had made for dessert.

It is a little too late but for that weekend I would have drank the wines I listed in the previous episode. The ‘97 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico and the 2005 Domaine de Ladoucette Pouilly Fume. Both are fully worth the search and price.

I am catching up on some old episodes (been traveling) and last weekend the best wine I drank – Easter weekend – was a Cote de Nuits bourgogne.

Coolest thing I drank that weekend was the 2002 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri. Very Old-World in execution, needs decanter time. Very pleased to have more to age.

QOTD: Two of my wines that I want to try asap are Charles Joguet ‘Les Petites Roches’ Chinon (100% Cab Franc), which I understand is made in the Beaujolais method (I haven’t liked any Gamay to date, so hopefully a different flavour profile from the Cab Franc!). Also I want to pop the Marques De Murrieta 1998 Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva (100% Viura) bought for £11 ($14-18?), it’ll be the most aged white i’ve had, and pretty inexpensive for a wine that old!…
