GV Thanks for tasting that, no sooner than i requested it after the mis labeling of the last episode it was right there on my screen! You nailed it, its a great wine! Not the 03 though, although more versatile with food imo. This weekend lots of basketball, hanging with the family, cooking food and drinking good vino.

Prepping for my wife’s birthday so a shout out to her as she rags on me for watching you so much. Waiting for more wine to be delivered. Can’t invite anyone else to Thirsty Thursday because we still haven’t gotten it together in Tidewater Virginia.

I agree that you should have had cheese. It completly smoothes out the tannins. As a rank amateur I would say that if you taste this again when it has the same bottle age that the 2003 did when you tasted it, you might rethink your score.

QOTD: Easter egg hunt of course.

Wow, GV, you mentioned before that you lost a winemaker friend over your broadcast, when you didn’t like his wine. I can tell from today’s ep. that it really stung. Sorry to hear that. But you’re keeping it rizzeal, so that’s why you’ve got the Vayniac Nation’s love. Today’s wine sounded interesting, because you mentioned the Amarone-like nose. But Amarone is something I’ve been curious about trying anyway, so maybe I’ll just skip over to one of those instead.

Hey, how about some more dessert wines at the end of your video flights? I’d love to hear your thoughts on Banyuls.

fabulous show. i enjoyed the video and found myself wishing there was a link to a google(?) map with the location of the vineyard marked on it. i really like seeing the pictures, tasting a wine, and having a real sense of location. to have an overlay for google earth with wine regions etc. . . i have to go look and see if it is already there.

Strong show with a strong wine, It is all about keepin’ it real (I agree with social project brian)and thats why we love the show because we can count on it. QOTD: this weekend I an having a easter dinner at my house with some friends and a friends boyfriend (cause she went out of town, bringin’ in some new people from outside the group) and am excited to try the Beaujolais i mentioned in the QOTD yesterday. Happy Easter!

  51. March 21, 2008

    amgryger

That was an awesome vineyard. I think you should actually try to include video clips of vineyards on the show whenever you can. One of the things I really like to do with wine is track down and try obscure wines from places that I have been in Italy, like Gravina, Castel Del Monte, Basilicato, etc. Drinking these wines and having an image of where they came from in my head is always really satisfying for me.

Was at the Manhattan Third Thirsty Thursday tasting with Dan K and Co. last night and had a good time.

QOTD: Early night tonight. Tomorrow night I will be going to this live figure drawing thing I usually go to on Saturdays. Sunday I will be having Easter dinner at a friends house and bringing some (hopefully) great wine. Then I have Monday off.

Gonna check on some b ball for sure. Not just the tourney though, really excited about the nba western conference playoffs starting a month early this year. Live in southern california, clippers fan which isn’t much fun this year, but I do get all the lakers games on local tv so I’m getting to watch quality games. Probably skipping out on the whole family easter stuff, my fiance has a gnarly sinus infection and has been in bed since wednesday. I’ve been checking out the show for a little while, 1st time commenter! liked the couch today, love the shows in general. noticed not many comments yet, so I’m carpe diem and stepping up with my first shout out. keep up the good work.
p.s. as for yesterdays question … opened ponzi 2006 pinot gris tonight and really enjoying it. wathcing oregon loose right now in the tourney so thought i’d twist open a local bottle for them

My own laid back friday line up:
    2006 Clean Slate Riesling
    Roederer Estate Anderson Valley Brut
    2006 The Little Penguin Shiraz
    Gruyere
    Jarlsberg
    Black Berries
    Nectarine
    80% cocoa pear chocolate

    yes… all for just me.

I got the penguin wine for $5.99 on my way back from school today. I’ve never had it before but I remembered that you found it drinkable. Mmm… I couldn’t drink it Gary. I suspect that I have a bad bottle because everything from nose to finish was just terrible. The moment I stuck my nose in the glass the extremely chemically smell shot my nose (the same smell from a wine I once left on top of a warm stove) and I probably shouldn’t have put it in my mouth… I tried decanting just to see what that would do but, no it didn’t do anything. I’m sorry to my palate.

By the way, I had never tried Gruyere until today. It was wonderful. Thanks!

Another awesome episode, even though I’m crying blue tears into my wine glass, because my beloved Drake Bulldogs were knocked out of the tournament. It was such a fantastic game… I wish they could have just scored one more three. Sigh.

This weekend Miss Vivian and I have a lot planned. Playdate on Saturday morning, dinner party to attend on Saturday night, mass on Easter Sunday morning, early dinner at a friend’s on Sunday afternoon for an awesome Polish meal. Easter weekend is always packed for us, since we’re singers and have to sing at a lot of events Thursday through Sunday.

QOTD – Pretty standard Easter weekend with the family & some friends coming over for Easter dinner – who are having their kitchen remodeled.

GV -See my post to yesterdays QOTD – we are serving up the 2003 L’Oligocene for Easter – posted before todays episode came on- Are we on the same wavelength or what? I have to say, watching the video today, I got the feeling that if you hadn’t already tasted the 2003, you probably wouldn’t have rated the 2004 quite as high – that is one of the beauties of a video review – that you can read between the lines, especially after watching you on many, many shows. SO – if you have the 2003 on hand, have it & the 2004 over the weekend & get back to us next week with your thoughts. I will post our tasting notes on this show & the 2003 show.

    Thanks Gary!

I tried the ‘04 SJDB tonight too. Funny thing is, I liked it better than the ‘03. I thought you were a little generous on the ‘03 and a little hard on the ‘04. You are right that the ‘03 had more fruit, but the ‘04 I thought was much more complex. Both had the big time bacon fat thing going on real strong.

    Thanks again.

big time opportunity this weekend for a local band that I love. Comprised of 14-15yr olds they’re bringing the thunder big time. Big free concert this Sat with some big name music people coming to check them out. I’ve known the guitar player for a couple years now (since he was 12, playing open mics and small gigs). Pretty soon I’ll be hearing about their european tours ‘n’ stuff. But it’s been awesome to watch them develop. And I’m bringing all my peeps for a huge blow out show tomorrow. Hot Toast

I believe you are losing friends and vendors as you as honestly as possible give us your best effort in doing that thing you do. It is a sad thing however, and it makes me all the more appreciative of the skill and honesty you continually bring to your show. It truely is the most fascinating aspect of it. So thanks for once again laying it on the line and making us feel important to you. You walk your talk.

Easter is the big deal in my household. Saturday is prep day. Sunday we celebrate with family and friends. Maybe I should open an Oregon(e) Pinot!

Bought a 2005 Noble Medoc mini-bottle and popped it in the office (Sat afternoon Korea time) after taking my son to the bath house. A bit dry and hot (the wine), should be better in a few hours I hope. Tomorrow we’re playing Ultimate Frisbee down by the river, then toss some darts at home in preparation for Monday night league. Pretty average weekend overall.

It is going to be close to 80 degrees in San Diego so we are going to the nursery so the wife can buy lots of plants. Damn the bad luck, we will have to pass right by my favorite wine shop. Might as well make a stop there and combine trips with the cost of gas these days. Have a great Easter Weekend to all the Vayniacs.

I just might have to grab a couple bottles of Mr. Gimel’s stuff from you. Sounds like a great value for 24 bills.

QOTD: Celebrating my birthday. Going out to a nice restaurant. Big shout out to all of my peeps in Fort Worth, aka “Funky Town”, who know and love one of our few great restaurants, St. Emilion. This weekend is very chill, gonna play some Civilization later today, after heading down to the Win Lib to pick up my secret packs. I bought the last ones but didn’t want to open four bottles by myself, so I think for the first, I’ll do the one, and save the other two to share with friends — because that’s what it is all about, after all.

This weekend I am doing a beer and cheese tasting with friends who normally drink wine only. It is at restaurant/bar that has many interesting American and European beers so it should be fun. I think wine lovers should also like good beer and I am just learning about how good beer can be, after many years of not drinking the normal crap US beer.

Honesty is the best policy and you are a much better person when you keep to that policy.
So what if you lose a “friend” because you score their wine low – it means that they were never a real friend in the first place if they cannot take any critique for their wine.

    Stay true to yourself!

QOTD: Saturday and Sunday spending it with with family. It’s also my wife’s 39th birthday on Sunday so I am sure we will be opening a special bottle that evening – most likely a Chateaneuf du Pape that she adores.

Thanks for tasting the Barroux… I’ve got a bottle on the way! Also great to see exactly where the wine comes from, I’d love to be able to take a tour like that someday. The south of France seems to be putting out some great wines from little known appellations (i.e. Ventoux, Cotes Catalanes, etc).

QOTD: I’ll sleep most of the day because I work nights (Printing Newspapers). Later, I’ll have dinner with the family. The wine will be 2005 Kosta Browne, Kanzler Vineyard. I’m excited because I’ve never had Kosta Browne and am anxious to see what all the hype is about.

Sorry you lost a friend. Maybe it’ll all blow over. Sometimes it does.
QOTD: We had our Good Friday Pizza Party and finished off the magnum of Edna Valley Syrah, plus a Vielle Ferme, plus a QVC Zinfandel which I disliked a lot. The nose really put me off. Kind of like catsup with maple syrup and petroleum jelly. Sunday, we’re going to my mother’s retirement home where they have a really good chef – used to work at one of the very nice restaurants here that went defunct because of a personal problem on the part of the owner. Ho, ho, ho.

GV – Here’s my review for the 2003 L’Oligocene – we just had another bottle tonite. Will probably get some 2004 for & do a blind tasting with friends for fun:
    2003 L’Oligocene . Just had another bottle this evening (Mar 23, 2008)
2 hrs decanted in the cellar – very old world, barnyard, mushrooms & a bit of hard boiled eggs on nose, earthy, smooth, a bit of sweetness, strawberries, red fruits & bacon mid-palete, a long finish but not a profoundly long finish, smooth tannins, lacks a focus point to take it that next level – something that captivates & fascinates that separates it from other wines (what I think of in a 95 pt or higher wine) very good, but not quite a 95 in my book, more like a 93 -still an exceptional value. (Looking fwd to trying the 2004)

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, Robert Scoble captured a great discussion between Gary, Kevin Rose, Tim Ferriss & the owner of DeLoach Winery… of which Gary seemed to steal the show, but it was a great “inside baseball” business discussion.
