    Glad you are, too.

  22. March 27, 2008

    Steph

Agree with Bryan Thatcher re: the Taste-along-with-Gary. I know you’re doing this with the secret wines on April 1, but it might be a good idea to pre-post your selections even once or twice a month. An especially good idea for those who aren’t able to get home delivery of wines and find it more convenient to shop locally.

  23. March 27, 2008

    CORSkier

Don’t know if someone already said it, but you need to change that second wine that’s listed to the Chard instead of the Ripasso. Great show, I’m looking up that Zin!

Aside from enjoying a good glass of wine with my wife, my love is playing badminton although I have a bad elbow at the moment and cannot play as much as I would like.

BTW – Gary “My little Pony” and spitting the wine, I think you are showing too much of your feminine side. Think you need to wear a JETS jersey to balance it out

  43. March 27, 2008

  48. March 27, 2008

QOTD: Cooking and eating really good tasting food. It doesn’t have to be gourmet. It can be a burger or comfort food but the trick, and the challenge, is to make it EXCEPTIONAL. The best compliment, and I hear it often (disgusting self pat on the back), is when someone says, “You know, I don’t usually like this, but this is really good!”

And Gary, about the lack of comments and your self-esteem. Let’s work on being a little more self-directed rather than other-directed :)

Hey! What about Mott’s t-shirt?! He’s going to keep sabotaging the links until he has a shirt, you know…

Hope to see you Saturday while I’m celebrating my B-Day at the WL store event.
Going to spoil myself silly with wine gifts to me! A whole bunch of ‘em. Or as many as my wife allows because I always say a few bottles and leave with a few cases! The last time I was there(WL) I couldn’t push my cart it was so heavy!

QOTD: I’m passionate about Dagoba chocolate, making my kids passionate fans of anything (although skulls, pirates, and death seem to be recurring themes at the moment I could live without), reading anything I can get my mitts on, and getting everyone in the world to understand that I’m a goddess.

Also, there are some of us who like that seriously dry stuff without food to wreck it. Nothing worse than a wine that tastes like Kool-aid, but hey, I was raised on my grandfather’s rotgut basement wine that makes chianti taste like a wine cooler.

  81. March 27, 2008

    Scott EJ

One of your picks for the next big region was Canada. Mine is South Africa for Chardonay. Yea..that’s probably old news, but lemme tell ya, man am I finding some great wines (mainly Chards) at great prices coming from there. Sure they’re not the Flowers or Hanzells…but, like you said, they roll in at a fraction of the price.

Lve the Edmeades, too. The 05′ was killer.

QOTD: Travelling. Especially to wine specific locales. Going to Walla Walla, WA & Spain this year spefically to taste the regional wines and bring some back.

Gary! What’s with all the late episodes lately??

…probably has something to do with your low comment counts!!! If we don’t know it’s there how can we have something to say!

QOTD: My passion seems to shift every few months, but some that maintain are: Star Wars, Politics, Lord of the Rings, Animation (making it, not watching it…I mean I like to watch it too but, anyway.), Classic Anarcho-Punk, Lord of the Rings, Atari games, Science, Learning new stuff all the time, Drawing/Painting, Wine!! 90. March 27, 2008

QOTD: Music, and honestly I can’t get too much more specific, but I suppose complex jazz and rock would narrow it a bit (but I really like everything, except maybe newish country).

Also, a possible Good Deal alert: went to a wine tasting today showcasing Gemtree Vineyards out of McClaren Vale, Australia–wasn’t super excited walking in(who really wants to try more; but was truly impressed by their ‘Tatterly Road’ 2003 a Cab Franc, Petite Verdot, and Merlot blend. Never would have guessed it was a mid-range australian red wine(I think about 14 bones). Some nice sauteed bell pepper, cherry skin, tobacco, good controlled fuit going on. Nice stuff, maybe you sould check it out for the peeps. QOTD: People, Language/travel, and above all Jesus Christ.

QOTD: Most definately.. FOOD! Very few other things in this world have the power to reconnect us with each other, and the ground we walk on (save wine of course!). Which is probably why they go so good together.. forget all that flavor stuff, just take in the essence of it. There is so much that many people do not get to experience; such a diversity of ingredients.

There is a big shift going on in this country especially in terms of our food industry. You see it everywhere. The diversity of small artisan shops – cheesemakers, bread, charcuterie. Look at the Whole Foods phenom. Its changing; people are becoming more involved in what they put in their bodies. It is totally awesome and so needed. Its going back to the land too people! And dont forget about the fish either! Stop eating that darn ahi tuna! GO SUSTAINABLE. Wild caught Alaskan Salmon/Halibut, Kona Kampachi, Farmed Tilapia, Barramundi, Stripped Bass, Bay Scallops, Farmed Shellfish, Farmed Rainbow Trout – all beautiful things that wont strip our planet of its diversity in years to come. No more foreign caught shrimp, chilean seabass, orange roughy, red snapper, and most other imported fish.. whew.. /rantoff.

    Justin L Ove

I’m doubling up on comments today, as I was unable to leave one yesterday, and I really liked the question. So I’ll start with that. My fun fact of the day (yesterday to be precise) is something I recently encountered in a book about wine. I read that there are over 500 chemical compounds found in wine. The same chemical compounds that give flavor and smell to various organics found on this planet. So when we smell or taste bell pepper (for example) from a cab sauv it’s because we are actually smelling or tasting the same chemical components that give bell peppers their inherent flavor. How awesome is that? All this time I thought it was all in my head.
QOTD (today): I’m passionate about music. Right now specifically The Mars Volta. Talk about a band that brings the thunder!
Best wishes Gary, love the show.

  199. March 28, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Passionate about the children I take care of as a doc. good show, Finally got to wines you actually liked. You confuse me at times with your dislike of ratings but always compare your ratings to Parker, WS, Jay Miller, etc. If your palate matches with theirs then the ratings mean something. If not they don’t. Problem is, every grocery store, wine store, even menus list ratings as if that is the reason you should buy a wine. Even the flavor profile posted is fairly meaningless. I have read blurbs on the bottles that say, tastes of peaches and walnuts but can’t find any evidence of any of these when actually tasting. Since it is spring now, GV give us more Grenaches and start bringing out the Rose’s. Now is the time I start buying these for late spring and summer consumption.

  200. March 28, 2008

QOTD: Local Amateur Theatre is my passion. We’re in the middle of a production right now. We take time for a wine “wind down” at least once a week after rehearsals. Brings the cast closer together. We’re housed in a 1903 lovingly restored Opera House (1000’s of volunteer hours). Check our my website to see the beauty of this building. This, in a town (I kid you not) of 1500 people. Next largest town (5000) is 25 miles away!

Went to a Rustenberg tasting a while back. They are serious winemakers. A nice blend of old world passion and new world technology. A South African vineyard that thinks Pinotage is a joke. Interesting. They do tend towards the oak monster but they get top shelf QPR rankings in my book.

Edmeades is pronounced Ed-Meads (as in Ed-Reads). The last e is silent.

It’s a KJ artisan estate brand. They do make quacktastic zins, like Hartford makes tasty Pinot.

The word on the street is that Edmeades used to have a tasting room in Alexander Valley, but they couldn’t keep it staffed with people whose oral hygiene was up to par with the brand’s desired image. Edmeades makes other zins that are better, just like Hartford makes several Pinots. But, Edmeades prices are much much more affordable.

    Cheers!

I think it’s great showing the softer side of the show for the ladies; Good job Gary. A little streotypical throwing the white wine at the ladies instead of a red though. Just kidding.

QOTD- three things I’m very pasionate about besides my wife…Ultimate Fighting Championship- mixed martial arts has absolutely the most impressive athletes of any sport; Art- fine arts, movies, books…I’m humbled by the creativity of human beings; Winemaking- until you make your own I don’t think you can truly understand wine…and everyone…EVERYONE can make their own in their basement, garage, or wherever from juices from all over the world.

QOTD: As GV is passionate about his work, I am passionate about my work and communicating the relevant bits to the peeps. The stuff my colleageus and I work on (scientific research that has societal relevance) may not be as much fun as changing the wine world, but seeing it gain recognition in the public sphere is both exhilarating and humbling. Now if we just had somebody like the Mottster to help us spread our version of the thunder.

    GV,
Good shows last couple of days. Couldn’t comment on the Ripasso episode, so I will here. That is one of my favorite every day wines. Good values, considering the price of amarone. The 2003 Zenato is really drinking well now, probably does not have that funky finish that the 05 you drank has. You should retry in a couple of years.
QOTD from that episode: My random fact is that I am moving Third Thirsty Thursday to First Thirsty Thursday next week to celebrate my 47th Birthday with some vino and my good friends.

show idea -> “lateral” [slight miss-use of the term] tastings within a producer… yes, it’s a little “brand”-ed but, let’s face it… you find a good wine – you’re more apt to return to that producer for other varietals, no???

Yo Gary… just started watching your show a couple of weeks ago, and I love it. I’m young, and trying to get into tasting more wines, and your passion is helping me to WANT to expand my pallet. Last summer I took a road trip through Edna Valley, and I tasted the Chardonnay from Tolosa, @ Tolosa, which is just a beautiful place. Sad to see you didn’t score it better, because I tasted more grapefruit on there at the vineyard, and it was awesome. If you get a chance or do a show on Pinot Noir, I think you should check out Kynsi Winery. Excellent Pinot… a little price (40-50 bones range) but great stuff.

QOTD: Traveling… I get to go to France, Spain, and Italy in a few weeks, and I’m pumped about trying all the wines there. Good times.

Dont you dare put Hogan and Flair in the same sentence! I have always hated Hogan with a passion. I just find the character to be over the top phony, and his set of moves was boring at best. It was obviously a great PR move my McMahon to make him a “USA” character in the 80s with all that Regan crap goign on, but no way could he match up to Rowdy Roddy Piper (best character in pro wrestling history), Flair, Macho Man, Million Dollar Man, Ultimate Warrior ( God watching his INSANE promos are classic ), Psycho Sid, etc. God I couldnt stand him…… end rant. QOTD: Jazz. There is nothing like comming home from a stressful day and putting on some John Coltrane. The man was a genius. Period.
