Although Gary is doing a great job changing the wine world, the change is not in the way the wine is made or served, rather it is through the approachability and perception of it. The Wine world hasn’t changed much in thousands of years, as its made in the same way and being consumed for most of the same reasons. If GV picked some good ones for this book, some wines that can withstand the time, the book will be a fun read until the pages turn yellow and the last bottle is pulled from our cellar. Even after that it will be an interesting reference, comparatively speaking, as we are drinking our cabernets, merlots, and cab francs, made the same way, out of our same wine glasses, 50 years from now. Do I see quarterly eReviews in the future??

QOTD: I’m undecided on the book, GV. The small amount of information I could find on the book (from the web) makes it sound like it is designed for folks who aren’t courageous in their wine choices. I don’t see a reason to purchase it when I’m already trying to drink new things every day for under the price of $12/bottle. I do use the ratings that are out there as a rough guide, but even they are only marginally useful at low price-points. Basically, I need more info on the book (or need to see) it before I decide… I’d love to hear more in a later episode of WLTV!

This is the first time I’ve commented. I found WLTV about a month ago and have been lurking while catching up on the episodes, starting at #1. I reached a milestone tonight, #100. What a ride so far!

I enjoy WLTV and am *proud* to come out and count myself among the Vayner Nation!

I’ve been a “dilletante wino” since the early ’80s, and only starting to get a bit more serious lately. I enjoy a broad range of old- and new- world style wines. Tonight I’m just polishing off the last of a pretty fair Argentine Cab (Kaiken’s 2005 reserve).

Question: I know you like some of the wines from Ridge. I got tuned on to Ridge in the mid 80’s and was quite fond of their York Creek Zin, which I recall as real monster that probably was responsible for igniting my interest in “real” wines. I probably drank at least a couple cases of the stuff over the years, but haven’t had a bottle since the mid-90’s. I’d like to hear your opinion on it today and see if you think it’s worth the 30 bones before I go out and buy a few for my cellar again.

I’ve been watching the podcast since the beginning of the year. I’m opening a spanish restaurant in Chicago. Our architect sketched in the wine room and I realized I know nothing about wine let alone Spanish wines. Your show has made me feel a hell of a lot more comfortable on the subject and taken away much of my anxieties, about wine. I still know nothing, but at least I’m not as scared to experiment, and say “I don’t get it” sometimes. Thank You!!!

I see big marketing potential for the book in the middle of toxic/industrial/post-industrial landscapes, on small patches of dirt and prickly grass along the Fish House Road or the McCarter Highway or Flushing Ave. where hawkers can sell the book from rustic stalls while conducting tastings and grilling blood sausages, chicken skins and ramps and asparagus.

I probably will. My only concern about books like this is that they are dated, and recommend all sorts of stuff I can’t find. But that may not be fair since I haven’t read yours yet.

For material that has a lifetime, like reviews of wines, I think web is better than paper. Somehow we have to come to grips with paying for stuff on the web!
