BTW – A wine guy that doesn’t know about Folex? It never met a red stain it can’t defeat. A few years back I was having some red wine with a girlfriend. Her dog knocked over a freshly opened bottle of red which spilled all over a white fabric recliner and the carpet. Instead of getting Po’d at the dog she pulled out the spray bottle of Folex and goodbye stain. Completely erased it. Mott, I just saved your Butt.

Way to kick Mott’s a** around today. That was an amazing carpet stainy-stain! And hey Mott, thanks for that lingering butt shot when you got sent to the couch. Still… Mott still deserves a LINK IT UP t-shirt. Am I not merciful?

Justin today? Last night at my Dad’s house, we had the Justin Chardonnay. I enjoyed it. He’s got some of the Cabs laying around too. When you’re in the mood for an aerial attack, release the fruit bombs!

FOLEX Mott Folex! take it from someone who spills far to much red wine.

I couldn’t agree more on the Isosceles. My wife and just got back from a central coast wine vacation and Justin was a huge disappointment, mass produced tourist wines anyone.

Gary please hurry on the central coast Rhone varietals. The list you read absolutely killed it on our trip. Tablas Creek is starting to make wines that are unreal. It took them a long time to get some of the varietals through quarantine. Try the esprit de beaucastel 05, Tanser 93, Parker 92-94, me in tasting room last week “Holy Crap this is good”. Not sure how that translates on a point scale but it has to be lot.

    Mott,
use oxiclean to take care of the stain. Yes, it really works. Handle of Trader Joe’s sack broke just as I was putting it in my car. Bottle of zin shattered and stained car seat and my jeans. Wife whipped out miniture spray can of oxiclean from her purse that she received as a Christmas gift from one of our kids. Could not believe my eyes as both stains disappeared after blotting with paper towels. All those years watching the infomertial and thinking it was a big rip off. Wrong!

    GV,

Your office would look truly great with a red carpet. That way no matter you or Mott spill, it won’t show. Just have the ol’ Mott sprinkle a few bottles of the ol’ red around the room to finish the rug job. Love your show. QOTD: Mamma’s working, home alone with the cats.

Good show! We want to see more interaction with the Mottser..It’s always fun to see how a “non-wine expert”react to tasting a wine. For tonight, nothing special..Just had a South African Sauv Blanc (Porcupine Ridge), which was average, and chilled on my patio watching WLTV. Cheers!

Hey GV, funny show. QOTD: it’s a weird day for me. After the earthquake this morning, I haven’t been right all day, so I’m at home tonight. Truthfully, I’m catching up on some old WLTV episodes – how’s that for an ego booster? One thing for you: please tell me that you’re going to roll through Chicago in the month of May for the book tour – it only makes sense to make your way west by stopping in Chi-town before you go out to Portland! Keep it real.

I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU SPIT THE JUSTIN AT $52!

You can get the red wine out of your carpet and I bet your mom knows how – “Wine Out” by Gonzo. I get it online because of the price/size. It’s the secret of drycleaners.

On another note, was out the other night at a restaurant, and saw Gewurztraminer on the wine list and decided to “try something new, and expand my palette.” Very glad I did. Not sure exactly which winery it was (although it was definitely from British Columbia) but it was pretty delicious.

    Hi Gary,
From his book “How to Remove Spots & Stains” by Herb Barndt (a former professor of mine) – book also on Amazon –

To remove the wine stain (in case you haven’t already yet) and any future stains on your shirts or tablecloths:

    TYPE
    alcohol, fruit, sugar

    FORMULA
    water
    salt
    oil solvent
    white vinegar

    METHOD
Sponge off stain with COOL water. For washable fabrics, stretch the stained area over a bowl, pour salt over the stain and pour boiling water through the fabric from a height of 12″. If the fabric can’t take boiling water, pour salt on the stain and moisten. Let stand, then scrape the salt off, and rinse. If these methods are too harsh for the fabric or it is non-washable, use an oil solvent. If any stain remains, apply a vinegar solution (half water), and rinse.

NEVER USE HEAT ON A SUGAR STAIN.
NEVER USE SOAP AND NEVER IRON A FRUIT STAIN.

    Good luck!
    B

As I am viewing the video on the Saturday after, it’s already happened, and it was so uneventful, I don’t even remember what I did. Pathetic…….no?

  171. April 19, 2008

    LarryW

First, my WL video arrived Saturday morning, already with 135 comments. How do people get it early? The website?

Second, that “big-ass” glass makes your head look small. I guess that’s one way to not get a big head.

Third, I wonder if it’s fair to try and judge big wines when they are so young. The oak and fruit melt away with bottle age, ultimately making a more balanced wine. I have a ‘99 Isosceles that I haven’t opened for that reason. BTW, you didn’t note the isosceles triangle on that “cool” label.

Go KU! That game was the best! Because Memphis was so great, too.

  172. April 19, 2008

    T.K.

A spot-on review of Justin. Let’s see how you rate the Paso Rhone Ranger wines which can also be over the top as well. Last night we enjoyed the Revenant Malbec Rose with a little Dim Sum.

QOTD: On this SATURDAY night (here in Australia) we held a wine blind tasting event. We had 5 sparkling whites and 7 red wines. On our list were:

Minchinbury White Seal Private Cuvee ($A 5)
    Jacob’s Creek Brut ($10)
    Seaview Brut 2001 ($20)
    Stefano Lubiana Brut NV ($32)
    Laurent-Perrier Brut (France, $70)

    Orlando “Gramps” Grenache 2006
    Coriole Sangiovese 2006
Peter Lehmann “The Futures” Shiraz 2005
    Brands Merlot 2005
    Chalk Hill Cabernet 2004
    Yering Station Pinot Noir 2006
    Cascabel Tempranillo 2007

I was the winner with 6/12, the wines I identified correctly were:

    Minchinbury
    Laurent-Perrier
    Yering Station Pinot
    Gramps Grenache
    Chalk Hill Cabernet
    Coriole Sangiovese

As ever, this competition was harder than it looked on paper! I think Gary V could have killed it though… but everyone had fun and that was the main thing.

One man’s over the top is another man’s Yum!!!! Justin is a great winery to visit if you get the chance, nice people and reasonable prices. You need to be in their wine club to get the Isosceles Reserve which is even more over the top and only made in great years. Double Yum! Do you sell Linne Calodo at Wine Library? Thought they were direct only. I think they are the “poor man’s Sine Qua Non”. Gary, you will think they are too over the top.

First, get off Mott’s case. You waste more good wine in one sitting than that one stupid stain. Get some of your boys to rent a rug shampooer and clean it up.

That being said, last night (Friday) the little lady and I went to our neighborhood Italian restaurant and I had a half bottle of Isole e Olena, a fav of mine with a whole Branzini fish. Delish.

QOTD : Can’t answer it because it’s already Saturday nite.

But on the Justin, I can comment – Have you ever been there? The whole place is fakey-fake & built to impress those with limited knowledge. I mean, it’s great marketing & I am sure that is good for business, but I would prefer a great wine. Really emphasizing form over substance, it seems to me. Justin clearly has this fantasy about Bordeaux, with his little chateau on the hill & the grapes he is growing ( & you should hear the comparisons to Bordeaux on the winery tour), but what is he doing growing Bordeaux varietals in the central coast ??? …. where the Rhone varietals are killing it – should have mentioned the tie in to one of your emails today – Justin is just north of a couple in the list – Tablas Creek , Linne Calado & L’Adenture – all quality Rhone producers.

  193. April 19, 2008

    Wine Not?

I am loving all of the comments on how to clean the stain! But seriously, what would a wine store office be without a little wine “oops” somewhere…you know?

QOTD: Went to book club and shared a bottle of Rioja that I bought in Spain a couple of weeks ago. Was really good! Wish I had bought more, but my suitcase was full to bursting as it was. Still I managed to squeeze 6 bottles in there!

QOTD: It’s Saturday, because my computer is doing something wierd and showing a tripod and camera instead of the usual winelibrary page and I just figured out how to make it run, so, on Friday evening I vacuumed and washed dishes and did laundry and washed floors and called my credit card company to cancel the card I lost while I was in New York. Today, my husband and I went to an afternoon French wine tasting at a restaurant – very fun – and this evening we watched The Savages.

  195. April 20, 2008

    Bobby Wino

Yessss…I’m so excited you did the Justin Isosceles. I really like many of Justin wines and I feel like they do a good job representing Paso Robles in wine shops across the country! I dig fruit bombs so I love these.

And speaking of Central Coast rhones I love Cliff Cate’s F’book request. And check out the reviews of L’Aventure and Tablas Creek on my blog about tasting rooms in Paso: http://www.pasodirt.blogspot.com. If you can get your hands on any of the L’Aventure estate wines it would be awesome to hear your thoughts.

QOTD: Tonight? Working…then going out with some friends to 3rd Stop; a great late-night spot for a bite to eat and about 20 beers on tap (a change of pace for myself and my co-workers after serving vino all night at our wine bar).

QOTD: headed out to a local brewery that has a half dozen styles of beer on tap and is nestled in Appalachian foothills, a good 20 miles from the nearest city. An excellent place to hang for hours and relax. (Blue Mountain Brewery. I highly recommend the 750cc bottle of Belgian style ale called Mandolin)

great to hear the questions and see the couch again!

Plus, I love JUSTIN…I mean the name and some of their wines.

QOTD: friday I watched some TV with my wife and had a great time with a little wine and ramen! HA! How’s that for a unique paring. Unfortunately, it was a terrible match: super salty instant ramen with a crappy red from down unders.

Vosne Romanee !! Vosne Romanee !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    You Ahole Gary…..
I asked 60 zillion times to do a show on Rosso Di Montalcino a poor mans “Brunello”; did you ever do the show? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Get over your rug; and leave Mott alone!
Your doing a wine show…….you know liquid red stuff!! Shit happens!!

Does anyone else pick up some sugar in this wine? I know it’s very unlikely, as it’s unfined/unfiltered, but my tasting group all said RS.

I rather enjoyed this wine, until the American oak 2×4 hit me on the back of the head. Very planky finish. Overall, a pretty enjoyable wine. They should just drop the American oak from this wine, and it would be much improved.

Couldnt agree more with you on the Justin. I’ve had several vintages of the Iscosceles and have never been wowed–especially for the price. I think their other wines, in particular, the Savant and Temperillo Reserve, are a much better wine. Great show.

    Hey Gary!!
I stumbled upon your show while i was searching the web for some recommended Rose wine! I must admit that at first, i was taken by surprise because your so… enthusiastic about white tasting, I was expecting a wine show to be much more serious. I am relatively new to wine and i appreciate all that you try to teach through this show!

I notice that you are a big sports fan and that you are from the NJ area (btw Giants rock, but props to you for being a devoted fan to a lousy team :P ) but you don’t seem to have much interest in the NJ Devils, the NHL hockey team… Whys that?

Anyway, keep up the great work,
    Jad

Hi Gary, greetings from Tokyo. I went to a casual French bistro with a few good friends. Drank some Alain Paret Condrieu, a Languedoc red from Montcalmes, a Chateau N de P from Grand Veneur. Good simple food, plenty of wine, good company.

Friday night we had a date night, went to see a movie, had a mediocre dinner, and I got to buy three bottles of one of my favorite wines… I had been looking for a while for the Foxen 2003 Sangiovese Volpino and thought I wasn’t ever going to find one in a store… and we randomly were walking around and found some in a wine store here…

Sooooo stoked! Foxen does a stellar job on their Sangiovese Volpino time and again!

I like the laid back Fridays!

I went to a mezze / tapas restaurant called Zaytinya in DC then went to the DC Improv with my girlfriend.

BTW – Barnes and Nobles sucks!!! I cancelled my order for your book through them because it was going to take almost another month before I got it. I will be ordering through amazon instead. Worst mistake of the new year was buying a membership for B&N!

QOTD: watched this Monday. On Friday we did a dry run for movie night at the winery. We set up a big screen (like 12 feet!) and projector and watched “A Good Year”, had some good cookout food and of course, some fine wine.

QOTD: 3 days late on the answer. Made coffee braised short ribs on pureed ginger garlic sweet potatoes with a beef jus reduction, haricots verts with carmelized shallots on the side. Had a bottle of Luna Merlot, Beringer Knights Valley Cab and Reynolds Family Winery Persistence. Invited some new freinds over and had a fantastic night of great food, family, friends and wine.

  233. April 22, 2008

A little behind schedule, but Friday night is a work night. I wait tables and hope to sling some fine wines every shift. We actually list the Isosceles on our wine list and I sold a bottle the other night. As it was the customer’s 3rd bottle in that range that evening (Nickle and Nickle Branding Iron and Silver Oak Alexander Valley) he only had one glass…the rest was mine. I agree with Gary. It’s a nice wine, but too fruity. I like the Justin Cab much more.

Actually, I gave the 2005 Justin Isosceles 91 points – but that’s my “pal”.

QOTD: Since this is after the fact, I will tell you what we did last Friday evening. My wife, Jane and I, dined a “One Walnut” in downtown Cleveland (which is always a good meal). Afterwards we went to the Great Lakes Theater company’s performance of Arthur Miller’s, “The Crucible”, which was outstanding.

Gary, Love your passion. Met the Proprietor at Justin, Deborah Baldwin (better half), at the Sandestin Wine Fest in northwest FL last weekend. Really nice person and poured some nice wine as well. Unfortunately not the Isoscles. Its a large tasting, 75 tables from wineries and distributors everywhere. We did have our own tasting at the house, Bertani Amarone 1988 and a GAJA Sito Moresco 2004 were the biggest hits. Maybe next year a road trip? April 21-222009…KevO

Iso is good but over-hyped/over-priced. Justin’s best wine is their cheapest, the Orphan that started when an earthquake cracked some casks and they mixed it up and bottled it. Halter Creek (next vineyard over from Justin in Paso)has a great reserve Syrah that IMO kicked Justin’s butt QPR wise.

Hey GV! I’m a lurker coming out of the woodwork just for you.

QOTD: Friday night I went to the Gallery Stroll in Salt Lake City, then out for sushi and beer after that. It was a lot of fun.

    Mr. Lavon Fischer

Gary, I am a bit behind in watching your shows but I just watched this episode #447 and saw that you were bummed out about the red wine stain on your carpet. Way to go Mott! :) No worries. My wife spilled a glass of red wine on our light colored carpet and we used Spotshot on it and if you look at it today you would never know anything was spilled on the carpet. It took it right out, it was magic. Give it a try and let me know how it works.

BTW, love the show! I live in Washington State and was hoping to catch up with you at the Taste of Washington this year but was unable to make it. Maybe next year.

    Cheers,
