Nice call on Vernon Gholston. I recomend you tying “The Show 2005″ on the thunder show. It has a nice symmetry to it.

    Why do you hate MJ?

QOTD: I recently had the 2004 Chateau Beaumont Haut-Medoc (only $20). This wine and my pal became best friends. Awesome.

    QOTD – I have a few recommendations.

    1. 1999 Hanna Bismark Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon – excellent with a grilled Ribeye.
    2. 2003 Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon
    3. 2005 Montes Alpha Syrah – these 2 at $12/bottle are excellent.

QOTD: Nachtgold Eiswein. An interesting value: it’s an ice wine that I’ve gotten for about 17 bones:

I like it. Very smooth and candy-sweet. It was the first wine that my wife drank faster than I did.

I recommend … how about a couple more recommendation shows? I generally prefer the usual format (wines you haven’t tried), but this might be nice about once a month.

QOTD: 2005 Forrest Estate Sauvignon Blanc from NZ. Massive White Grapefruit zest from start to finish, with some sweet melon on the mid-pallet. The finish has the switchblades. The wine totally rocks my socks. For ~$14 USD I think it is a total steal of a deal for anyone. Approachable for noobs, and has some elegance for the oneophile.

P.S. Check out the site…. I do a re-cap of the week and make a list of similar wines available in Ontario for “C-Squared O” (Canadian Contingent Ontario).

hmm, i can’t think of any non-wine recommendations, so we’ll go with a wine rec: alain graillot syrocco. it’s a moroccan syrah, and i tried it because i thought it’d be interesting to try something from morocco. i thought it was great, and i’d love to get your take on it!

Makulu Iswithi Pinotage, South African import. Great bang for the buck!

I reccommend the Apollonio Valle Cupa. Imported in the USA by Vin Divino, Chicago IL. Good wine.

Gary, love the show, I’m a lurker but felt I should cross the realm to be a commenter.

I’ve been watching the show for over a year and I gotta ask. Is there any Australian wine that you’ve actually liked?
It’s always ‘fake fruit’ this and ‘over the top’ that. I mean come on, there’s gotta be something that’s good, they all cant be bad.

I’m feeling that you might have some blinkers on there. =)

    Anyhoo, keep bringing the thunder.

    J.K.

I strongly recomment the Clos Henri Sauvignon Blanc 2004/2005, this is not your average sauvignon blanc. It’s from Henri Bouregeois, a famous loire wine producer (I believe you did one of their pouilly fumés once)who bought an estate in New Zealand where this wine is from. I love it!

Gary- How was the NFL draft? Saw the video!!! :)

Gary – at your request I’m finally stepping out of ‘lurker’ mode, though I’m always watching the podcasts several days “late” so I always feel like people have moved on to the next show by the time I’m ready to comment. Anyway…

I’d recommend visiting Albania. It’s a fantastic country that after years of being downtrodden under one of the most repressive Stalinist regimes in the world, is now finally (slowly) coming into its own. The people are incredibly friendly, and absolutely LOVE visitors from America. The food is amazing – I had better Italian food than I had in Italy – and the wine is quite pleasant, if not stunning. (Most people grow their own grapes and make their own wines, which is a treat. The soil is so rich that each family can easily keep themselves in wine.) And let’s not forget the geography – beautiful mountainous country that slopes down to the Adriatic. As Croatia gets more and more built up, I expect Albania to be the next “hot” beach resort country.

Also, I’m curious – have you tried the Ridge cabernets from the Santa Cruz Mtns? At least one “French wine” snob was convinced by the ‘01 vintage that American wines can be worth drinking.

    Why not try these?

Mt.Difficulty or Felton Road Pinot Noirs (NZ)
Sumac Ridge Pinnacle or Meritage (Okanagan Valley, B.C.)
    Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno

Went to Sonoma a few months ago armed with my new Vayniac tasting skills, and one smaller winery really stood out to me – Hook & Ladder Winery. I really enjoyed tasting there, and i came home with several bottles of their 2007 Gewurztraminer – I definately reccommend trying it.

    Hey Gary

QOTD: Australian wine from VICTORIA or TASMANIA – you don’t like Barossa Shiraz; OK stop drinking it. Try a King Valley Nebillio or Sangivasse, Yarra Valley Cabernet, Henty Riesling, Bendigo or Grampians Shiraz, Tasmanian Sparkling or Rutherglen fortified.

QOTD: Recomendation – BRING MOTT IN AS A GUEST TASTER!!! I think he’s spent quite enough time behind the camera and the Vayernation is eager to see him share in Gary’s spotlight. So, please, let Mott come on and give his opinion on the wines alongside Gary….Pleeeease, that wud be a great show!

QOTD: Taste the 1999 Chateau Musar (from Lebanon). Great show!
