Only two more days of matzah! (Not including today)

Just in case you’re getting sick of regular old matzah, here are some recipes you might enjoy (my family like’s ‘em!):

    Passover Rolls (Grandma Bev’s recipe)

    2 cups matzah meal
    1 tsp salt
    1 Tbl sugar
    1 cup water
    1/2 cup oil
    4 eggs

Combine first 3 ingredients. Boil water and oil together. Add to dry
mixture. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Let stand 15 minutes. Shape into small
balls with oil on hands and place on greased sheet at 375 for 50 minutes.

    __________________________________________________

    Fried Matzah (Grandpa Mort’s recipe)

    1 egg for every 1 1/2 matzah
    oil
    water
    salt
    pepper

Crack matzah into 4-6 big chunks. Fill bowl with cold water. Immerse matzah
and immediately drain. Mix eggs, salt, pepper separately. Then coat matzah
in the mixture. Put oil in the pan and heat on medium high till it bubbles
through the matzah when you test it. Put matzah in the pan and cook till
golden brown & crispy. You can keep it as a pancake or break it into pieces
as it cooks. You may want to sprinkle more salt when eating it.

You might like this kosher Chardonnay from Israel, but what do I know? 2003 Yarden Kaztrin Chardonnay… http://www.kosherwine.com/cgi-bin/ProductInfo.asp?WineID=87752005989

    Gary,

Ooooooh Malbec and Petit Verdot! Exciting!

BTW The 2003 Yarden Katzrin Chardonnay (http://www.kosherwine.com/cgi-bin/ProductInfo.asp?WineID=87752005989) I mentioned before was rated 93 and 91 Daniel Rogov and Robert Parker, respectively (see http://www.jflv.org/page.html?ArticleID=168848).

    Best QOTD yet!

    Okay, here’s what I recommend:

    -my Grandma Bev’s Passover Rolls
-my Grandpa Mort’s Fried Matzah (a.k.a. Matzah Brei)
-my Dad/Zayde’s brisket (it’s kind of a secret recipe, so I can’t exactly give it away on a website, but if you want it, we’ll hook you up — my dad was thinking about doing a one-time “cooking show”-esque video podcast where he would make it, so who knows?)
-2004 Tishbi Estate Jonathan Tishbi Special Reserve Sde Boker Single Vineyard Red (90 points Daniel Rogov, see http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/808845.html )
-2003 Yarden Katzrin Chardonnay, see above comments. :-)

I’ve been having whole wheat matzah this year, it’s pretty good. Give it a go, you might enjoy it. Not the same as homemade, I know, but I think it’s worth a try. Also, I hate to say it, but I don’t think I’ll be buying a book for Father’s Day… since I’m getting one (and one for me!) for my Dad for his birthday! (May 16) I hope you understand. :-)

Have a good weekend, and a good time at the draft!

Chateau Simone from Palate… both the white and red… these are both great wines from interesting varietals with a lot of character and food friendly qualities; plus they are from the southwest of France…

It’s about time for a Chateau Simone show.

Oh and the wines of Thierry Puzelat, killer, different wines from the Loire.

  28. April 25, 2008

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: I highly suggest trying the Darioush Viogner if you can get your hands on it. Also, the Godspeed cabernet is worth taking a look at, especially with it being an under $30 Napa Cab.

QOTD: Get a bigger chalkboard, or maybe a little digital tv to hang back there? And tie it to another camera. You could call it the “Mott Reaction Cam”. That would be sweet!

    Gary,

I love Amarone and wines similar to Amarone. Is there a comparable white version to Amarone which is dry and a little less sweet than Ricotto, Ice wine or Sauternes? From the research I’ve done, Canadian ice wines apparently have a an alcohol content around 13% which would indicate that it is drier. Correct? So far, I’ve not been able to find an ice wine that I could afford; much less a Canadian ice wine.

In the same way that I would not tug on Yo Yo Ma’s sleeve to comment on his bowing technique, I can’t bring myself to recommend a wine…but I’ll throw in my favorite food item.

#48 – Binny’s Brooklyn Reuben – on the menu at Zingermans in A2 (full disclosure – I work there. Honest truth – Not catching a ride – I’ve always loved it).

It’s a Pastrami Reuben…Rich and Funky Bakehouse Pumpernickel Rye (natural starters, double baked, sliced thick and grilled with olive oil), in-house-recipe developed with Niman Ranch for the Meat, Switzerland Swiss, housemade russian, great kraut.

It’s sensual. It’s too big for the room. It’s a riot of sweet and spicy, crunchy and squishy contrast and complexity…it’s the duality of man you can hold in one hand. I was lovingly and extravagantly misquoted in Edible Brooklyn talking about it. It’s one of the great relationships in my life.

Little is certain in this life…but something tells me the Lions will blow their pick. I’ll be watching for you GV.

QOTD… an awesome music festival in Telluride, Colorado… the “bluegrass”… simply an awesome vibe.

  34. April 25, 2008

    David Cole

QOTD: Two wines I would recommend are from the Paso Robles area since I was just there tasting. 1) Anglim 2006 Cameo, which is a blend of 50% Marsanne, 25% Roussanne and 25% Viognier. It was crisp, clean, GREAT nose and a nice finish, 2) Penman Springs 2005 Paso Robles Merlot. One of the really nice Merlot’s at a great price that I have had in some time.

I didn’t think the show was Crazy, it was GREAT!

Everyone have a great weekend!! Toast, sniffy-sniff, taste and enjoy!

  35. April 25, 2008

Great show Gary – I will be seeking out the Pomum. I appreciate you making us aware of these smaller wineries (i.e. Phillips Hill).

  36. April 25, 2008

    MagnumGourmet

Yes Gary, you did try the Shya red at the Vayniac party. Javier and Shylah were there for a while and they brought a magnum of the 2005 to share. I asked you to give it a go since I remembered you commenting on your great grandpas name being Shya on a past episode. You thought it was a bit tight due to the temperature and the fact that it was being poured from a just opened magnum.

QOTD – Since you fulfilled my recommendation of trying the Pomum wines I guess that I will have to come up with a new one. Here is one that I know you didn’t get to try at the Taste Washington event…Stevens Winery 424 red blend.

  37. April 25, 2008

    Rossodio

What do I reccommend to you?

If you can get your hands on it, get a bottle of the 2000 Tenuta Farneta Bongoverno. 100% Sangiovese Tuscan wine that you could snag for around $35, I’d say. It is an absolute beauty of a wine; the toughest thing about it for me was trying to hold off on taking the next sip while the finish evolved and silky textures and tastes danced on my tongue. It’s beautiful now, and I think will only get better over the next couple years. The best wine I’ve had yet.

  38. April 25, 2008

    Ryan W

    Gary,

First off let me just say thanks for doing what you do. You have really put a spark into my passion for the wine and have really elevated my game. Thanks!

Second, I just received my first shipment of wine from WL. One of which is the 2004 Chateau Sansonnet (not sure if I want to save it or just drink it. Man I want to drink it).

Finally QOTD – Gary, I recommend that you do a live “Interactive” tasting where people can taste along live via the web. You can pair that along with secret packs and I think it would be killer. By the way, I am going to get both secret packs and am very excited as this will be my first.

    Thanks again

QOTD: I recommend that you personally call me with the info on these killer small boutique wineries BEFORE you blab it to the whole world :)

    Recommendations?

Let’s see, this is the kind of QOTD that I can sink my teeth into.

But when someone asks for a recommendation, you have to know how they roll. How about the Casale Del Giglio 100% Petit Verdot, which I picked up on 3/29, and enjoyed shortly thereafter, a whole new experience, as I’d never had a PV before..

Or the wine that I was pleased to find was a hit on 3/29 at Basilico’s, 2004 Venta Mazzaron tempranillo (though it definitely needs time to decant, I gave it an hour before pouring it back into the bottle, and risked the ‘open container’ law on the drive down to the Library.

Have fun at the draft tomorrow, GV!

Great show Gary and Mott! I have been missing this gem until about two weeks ago. I happened to catch Kevin Rose’s twitter and he was raving about hanging with you and “really” tasting wines. Thought I’d check you out. Gotta admit the first ten minutes I saw; well sufficed to say I was not a fan. But dude, after twenty mins… I was hooked.Don’t change a thing! Love your personality. Great enthusiasm. Makes me excited to try different wines. you’re alright for a Jets fan. “GO SKINS” :-) Keep up the good work!

0h and to Gary’s twitter question… He was authentic his first 50 or so shows but he’s “keeping it real” now. Truth to oneself. :-)

My first comment! Straight to the point! QOTD: I would definitely recommend a chassela grape based wine from Lutry, Canton de Vaud, Switzerland. Has nice honey aromas and real crispiness. Keep up the great work!

3 – Blandy´s Bual 1920, Madeira – Portugal – Generoso, Blandy´s, 267,80 Euros in Portugal, 2118 bottles. A great Madeira wine! If you prefere you can try the Blandy´s Malmsey 15 Years Old, Madeira – Portugal – Generoso, for 25,75 Euros in Portugal.

    QOTD:::
—2005 Joseph Roty Marsannay Rose – beautiful, and more refined than the 2004.
—2002 Stanko Radikon Ribolla Gialla – white with structure, strength, and complexity
—2005 Domaine du Cros (Philippe Teulier) Marcillac ‘Lo Sang del Païs’ – 100% Fer Servadou – beautiful minerality, and acidity – if you like Morgon, and if you like Saumur, you’ll love this stuff
—and just because: FX Pichler Riesling Smaragd, Dürnsteiner Kellerberg.

Thank you for the show Gary, makes me look forward to our Washington trip even more this October.

QOTD: I recommend that you grab a couple bottles of the Pomum, pack a fantastic picnic basket, put some flowers and in two books for you and your wife to read and find a stunning spot to suprise her with a picnic (mid week) this spring. Pull her out of work and dedicate a day to showing her how much she means to you.

I recommend a wonderful Italian wine from the Calabrian region of Italy called, Odoardi Savuto – 2003: 45% Gaglioppo, 15% Greco Nero, 15% Nerello Cappuccio, 15% Magliocco Canino and a touch (10%) Sangiovese. You can find it in NYC.

My first comment here! Straight to the point: QOTD recommendation is definitely a nice Chassela from Lutry, Canton de Vaud, Switzerland. Preferably 2005, if you can find any after the hale storms desroyed most of the vintage. Expect nice honey flavors and real crispiness!

    Malphas

It wasn’t completely “Laid Back Friday” today, but there was a little crackle of thunder with that Pomom wine. :)

Dude, I just subscribed to the WLTV RSS feed as soon as the thing was mentioned on the show. I’m surprised I never had the instinct to ask about adding this feature, although I always like these things in my Internets and the podcasts located therein.

QotD: Aside from my earlier recommendation about brain associations in Episode #449, I’m gonna chime in with something else here — brace yourself. Since you’ve just WRITTEN a book about something that you’re into (BIG congrats on that, btw), I will recommend that you READ a book about something I’M into: SUPERHEROES!

“Invincible: The Ultimate Collection, Volume 1 (hardcover)”

Take all the lame clichés about your typical superhero story, and make them all way more clever and funnier than that stupid “Superhero Movie.” Then, slowly build up the story to a very important and meaningful battle with a surprise opponent, and finally watch this book change the superhero world – whether they like it, or not!

I hope you enjoy my recommendation. You can look it up at Amazon.com somewhere. Just copy and paste that title in the search bar.

Way to kill it yet again.
Plus big ups on the secret duo packs, hopefully there will be something special in these two.

QOTD: I recommend doing the secret packs every month, it would give us vayniacs something to look forward to. Also I recommend trying any of the Sineann wines, especially the 2006 Schindler Pinot Noir. They might be a little too new world for you, but I love them.

  69. April 25, 2008

    Great episode,
QOTD: Henry of Pelham 2006 Gamay from Ontario. I loved it, partly because it was the first wine that I found that had some of the flavours that you were talking about on the show. It helped em expand my palate and also tasted great, flinty and earthy. Enjoy.

  70. April 25, 2008

    Good one Gary.

QOTD: You MUST try Surly “Furious” beer. Made right here in the great state of Minnesota. Un-freaking-believably good. Cool packaging too. Give a shout if you can’t get it, I’ll figure a way to make that happen.

*ATTENTION* QOTD: I do not have any good recommendations for a wine at this moment, however, I do have a recommendation for something else… I think we would all love to see a Gary Vayernerchuck/Wine Library documentary. I am a film-school graduate living in New York, and would love to lend a hand if you ever chose to do so. Cannot wait for your book. Have a great weekend!

First, congrats on the book (1st of many?). Hopefully I won’t have to go buy one, but if I do (boo hoo) I’ll gladly do so! My hope is that the book tells your story (Russian immigrant family without two nickels to grow into a major player in the wine world, etc, etc) as well as the 101 wines that bring the thunder because YOU brought the thunder to the wine world! We, the Vayniacs, only reflect the thunder deep into the hearts and minds of friends, family and the poor cashier at my local shop who’d never heard of you!

QOTD- Recent recommendation… 2005 Water Wheel Memsie, got it cheap (under $12!), felt like I had spent the rent money when I drank this baby!

bonvec’s comment happened to be on the main page when I started watching the show, so let me put in another shoutout for Zin Alley. Was very impressed with their stuff when I went tasting through CA last year. 42 bones for a Zin really ain’t cheap, but it was seriously good, well-made wine.

Gary I just watched episode 148 and I have to say that it was absolutely crazy. I am definitely going to taste some of those things each week. I am going to try to focus on 2-3 items a week and even pair it up with a wine that you mention them in.

Thanks for the great tips and laughs.

QOTD: Give a shout-out to the Midwestern wineries who are doing some good stuff. Oliver Winery near Indianapolis (Bloomington, IN), is a fine example of a very under appreciated wine maker. This country has so much to offer and it would be great to see some of the smaller wineries get some recognition on your show. If you want to sample some of their wine, hit me up and I will send some your way.

QOTD: I recommend hot dog, tortilla, and cheese. Delicious!!! You broil or grill the hot dog, slice it in two lengthwise and put it on a tortilla, lay down some sharp cheddar, broil til the cheddar melts, pour on some hot sauce, and you are in heaven. I’m going home to eat 3 of those right now. YUM!!

My wife, both dogs and I like the 2005 Cabernet sauvignon and the 2005 chardonnay that was aged in stainless steal. They were made by The Winery at Eagle Knoll. The winery has changed it’s name to Wood River Cellars, the managment and the person that makes the wine has all changed (what ever you call that person). So, I don’t know how things are going to be.

QOTD: For a show, I would suggest a beer and cheese pairing episode. After all, beer is the better accompaniment to cheese (this according to many cheese mongers and Janet Fletcher, cheese expert/author, WINE drinker, and wife of a wine maker.

Greets from Seattle; we miss you already, man! Oh yeah, you want a recommendation, so here’s one of the most surprising wines I’ve tasted since I was just a kid, sipping Mogen David with the family at the end of the week back in the ’60s: St Julian Michigan Light Solera Cream Sherry, made in that wine capitol of the world, Paw Paw, MI. Made of 100% Niagara, a grape from which you’d expect the wine to taste like stale Jelly Babies at best. But this stuff is heaven, straight up, the best sherry from outside of Spain. Zero foxiness that I can detect, though it’s a mystery how they can achieve it. I actually mail-ordered a case direct from Paw Paw! You want a more conventional recommendation? How about Facelli Winery’s Columbia Valley Merlot? I’ve been drinking Lou Facelli’s wines almost since he first opened up shop in Woodinville (home of Chateau St Michelle) more than 20 years ago. Of all his wines, it’s his merlots that are to die for. I haven’t tried the current releases yet, but he’s been batting 1.000 for so long that I’d be startled if the streak doesn’t continue.

Can’t wait to get the book! Loved the matzoh today.

Suggestion, from someone who has watched so many struggle with this, could you demonstrate properly opening a corked bottle of wine? Spent 20 yrs in food & bev biz training people, know it’s not easy at first, but know YOU, Gary, have the power to train the masses.

I stopped at AJ’s Fine Foods on the way home tonight, and their wine guy asked if I needed anything. I told him that I was in the mood to try anything tonight. He gave me this nice Sangiovese & Syrah blend (60/40 respectively)–and at a $16 price point, I find it to be a very good value.

So I definately signed up for the Pomum mailing list and hope good things will come of that.

Also I won’t be getting enough moneys to buy the mystery packs until Wednsday next week so please don’t let them sell out by then.

You mentioned getting into the beers and doing maybe a special or something on that and I want to recommend Left Hand Brewery’s Milk Stout. Sounds weird definately but give it a try and I’m sure you’ll love it. Not so sure how the sniffy sniff is gonna go though.

great show. can’t wait for the next tasting…
in chi-town, the weather is hot one day, cold the next.
in other words, can’t quite bust out the rose yet.
but, since it’s ALMOST rose season, i have a recommendation for you.
and it’s ALMOST a rose. maybe it technically is. i don’t know.
    it’s called Reuilly Pinot Gris.
almost a rust colored thing going on. like the edges of a really old wine, but all the way through.
    i think it’s loire valley.
never had anything like it. i suggest you put it on the show.
    really pure fruit. very interesting.
ps- i sent in my receipt on the book, and it bounced back. i’ll try again i guess.

I went to CSU Fresno’s Farm Market for a tasting yesterday and talked up WLTV to the person pouring for us. She was really interested and promised to check out the show. I can’t wait to go back and see what she thinks. I nailed the bouquet and flavor profiles by the way.
So, QOTD: On your next trip to Cali, visit the enology department at Fresno State and meet the future winemakers. Or just have them ship you a case for an episode. Come on,it’ll be fun!

QOTD: 2005 Contraste from Wente Vineyards / Casa de Piedra

This wine IS THE THUNDER. Tasted while at The Restaurant at Wente, and it blew me away. One of the best wines I’ve ever experienced… combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Temrpanillo from the Guadalupe Valley (Baja) and Livermore. Only available at the winery, but well worth the $49 and drive (for those nearby or on business).

    Derek F.

    Nice show today…as always!!

QOTD: Gary you have to seek this wine out, its called Inevitavel-Santa Vitoria. I just tasted this wine a few weeks ago at a tasting and it brought the thunder !!!!

Here are some notes on the wine >>>>

Grape Varieties- Touriga Nacional and Syrah
    13 months in French Oak

tasting Notes- Full bodied red wine with intense and complex aroma, where peppermint, orange-tree flower, dark plum, fresh figs, truffles and dark chocolate aromas stand out. The taste is very structured and involving, and the high quality tannins are evident yet elegant, and made smoother by ageing in the bottles. The finish is long and complex.

This wine runs around $40 bones…not bad for what you get…give it a wirl.

  186. April 26, 2008

    Chippewamike

    Nice show. . . a little of everything ;)

QOTD: 2006 Thorne-Clarke Reserve Shiraz. I Wine Lib recommended this a couple weeks ago, but it is really good at a great QPR

Enjoy the draft. We’ll be looking!

QOTD: When you fly by SNL’s episode count you should have one of the actors or Loren Michaels on. I would guess there are several that would be glad to come on the Thunder Show.

  193. April 26, 2008

    Tad

QOTD – I recommend the 2004 Stephenson Cellar Syrah from WA.

  194. April 26, 2008

Great show. As you said, a little wierd for a Friday show but I am looking forward to picking up both of the Pomums.

    Major Recommendation:

GRAVITY – the Wine not Newton’s 4th law, although we all must obey it. Try Radford Dale Gravity Stellenbosch 2005 – only 140 cases imported so it’s hard to find but worth the effort. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Viognier) Spectator really blew it with this one (only 86 points) it’s pure chocolate mint on the palate.

  198. April 26, 2008

    zacharyseibert

Watched this episode half awake on Saturday morning, afterwards I was wide awake. Love the energy GV, you could talk about anything and your energy would make it interesting.

Fun show! Poor Lassie, I think there is a lost episode where she pulls the case of wine out of the burning house and saves the day. Timmy says, “Lassie! Get the Pinot!”

QOTDs 1. Keep on keepin’ on…

    Scott EJ

Love the WA state wines. The fruit there is certainly special.

I’m gonna break down your QOTD int two parts.

    1. Good health and happiness for you, your family, and all of your vaniac friends.

    2. Petit Corbu. My gal and I had the 2005 Les Jardins de Bouscassa – Alain d’Brumont last night and it blew us away. Rarely do we agree on wines that much, but this one was a definite from the get-go. It’s many hours after we put this down and I can still taste it. Very fun varietal.

Thanks for everything, GV. Good luck at the draft…I’m sure your Jets will come out better than my Bears. We suck like that.

  206. April 26, 2008

    Zume

QOTD: Recommendation: Generosa WInery 2005 Pinot Noir from Veranda Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Amazing Pinot-Contact me and I’ll ship you a bottle.

Gary, I recommend doing a once a week show on ESPN. That would be the coolest if you commentated on the Jets, and other teams as well. Better yet, what if you were drinking wine while hosting the show on ESPN. You could pair wine with different sports and sports occasions.

    You and the Mottster rock.

  211. April 26, 2008

    Adam Pollack

Thanks for mentioning my dad’s Birthday in the shout outs i love the show how exactly can you make home made matzoh with the whole 18 minute thing going on. My dad was ecstatic he kept on watching the shout out over and over.

  212. April 26, 2008

    Purple Tooth

Hi Gary. My recommendation to you would be to come to Texas and visit some of the wineries and taste some Texas wine. I would put Becker’s Cab Sav Reserve up against a good Calif Cab any day. Dry Comal Creek makes an outstanding Hungarian style Red and their Black Spanish is so unusual and quite good too. They serve “shots” of their white wine with jalapeno peppers. Lone Oak Winery makes some excellent Rhone style reds. Llano Estacado’s Vivano is very good. The buzz is that Viognier will be the “signature wine” of Texas. Grape growing is a tough business in Texas. The weather is brutal…late spring freeze, hail, drought, wind, etc. But when the wine is good it is very very good. Check it out!!

  213. April 26, 2008

    Shawn

You are ridonculous. Can’t wait for the draft though, and hope to see you pointing at your head, screaming like a madman.

Anyway, QUOTD: You’re always harping about the over-the-top Australian wines. But I know that you’ve tried the Mitolo G.A.M., and you gave it a 94. But I really do think you’re missing out on everything else that they make. The Savitar is outstanding. I love these wines, Robert Parker loves these wines, and I am certain that you will too.

  214. April 26, 2008

    Shawn

Almost forgot… Denmark loves you. And the Pats are, and always will be, the best.

  215. April 26, 2008

    Nickyb85

Great show, looking forward to the book.

QOTD: Brennan Vineyards in Texas, (Its time you take another look at Texas Wines), their Viognier has won medals and awards, and I really like their Syrah.
Other recommendations would be to keep up the great work, and I really like that beer idea that you had the other day as well.

  216. April 26, 2008

    Craig

QOTD: I recommend you check out commoncraft.com if you want a GOOD plain english description (short video) of RSS.

Mott.. Link it up! Wait… I can’t say that can I? Let me try it myself.

    RSS in Plain English

Don’t know if you allow such things. Good show. I like the buy and hold recommendations!

  217. April 26, 2008

QOTD: Try the 2004 Miolo Merlot Terrior from Brazil!

  218. April 26, 2008

    Harley Stan

Gary, great show today and I am looking forward to reading your book.
QOTD 1999 Far Niente Cabernet, I had it on New Years Eve with friends and I can still imagine the taste on my Pal

  219. April 26, 2008

    Brian Steckman

QOTD – I would recommend that you find out why WLTV is not on the “Web Downloads” section of TiVo. I watch WLTV daily from the comfort of my bedroom but to get it I need to download through iTunes – bring it through TiVo Desktop to transfer it to my TiVo HD box and watch it on my 42″ HDTV.

Being posted on the Web Dowloads section would make this process a simple one button selection and WLTV will be waiting for me automatically.

If you don’t have a TiVo, this post will make no sense…but is very important nonetheless!

    Thanks Gary!

  220. April 26, 2008

i have a couple recommendations for everything wine library. i am a relatively new vayniac so when you mentioned the secret wine packs i went out and got them both right away. being a new user i had to go through the whole process i think it would be easier to use paypal and think you might get more people buying wine that haven’t in the past because of the simplicity. also im assuming there are no more of the red wrist bands. i really want one and im sure there are others why not allow the people to buy what they want. i am a fan of yours on pownce and think you should post there more maybe post your videos as you put them up from garyvaynerchuk.com, maybe get a qik phone and make some videos as you walk around the store or at a jets game(i don’t want to use twitter i think pownce is better). awhile back you said you would have a link of the day but i don’t seem to see that so maybe get back to that. Lastly and most importantly because i will be doing the secret wine packs and i will be have friends over who have never seen you, you better bring the thunder on may 6th show!!!!!!!!!!!11!one!

  221. April 26, 2008

    Doug from New Orleans

Great show again, I recommend trying Travaglini Gattinara Riserva 1999 a great bottle of vino. Cheers!

  222. April 26, 2008

    Lois and Greg

QOTD: A shoutout to the staff at WL. They have always been helpful and courteous (especially about the cheese).
QOTD2: Feel free to let us know about any other family members who made a difference in your life. I am always amazed to think about my grandparents (all of them) leaving Europe with nothing, coming to America, finding each other and making a life.
About the Jets, as a long time season ticket holder, I’m sure they will do something unexpected, but still mess things up (I can hear the boos already).

  223. April 26, 2008

For what it’s worth, if your fans haven’t scored any 2005 Pomum Syrah already, they ain’t gonna. The nice folks at Pomum told me by email this morning that they’d just sold out.

  234. April 26, 2008

    Joe G.

I saw you twice during the draft and you totally nailed with the Vernon Gholston pick

  235. April 26, 2008

    Kristen

Definitely a different show, but a good one nonetheless GV! That Pomum sounds incredible, hope I’ll be lucky enough to get some bottles in the future.

QOTD: 2005 Alma Rosa Chardonnay or the 2005(?) Alma Rosa Pinot Noir. These guys kick it! Plus, start watching LOST- it’s super addictive this season. They’ve certainly brought the thunder back!

  236. April 26, 2008

    Three things
La Selvaccia Brunello 1999 34 bones
    Neal Family Cabernet 2004
Also, 1989 Kenwood Artists Series Cab

  237. April 26, 2008

    Derick

Yep you were definitely on ESPN for the draft and you look like every other dumb drunk Jets fan. The Jets made a good pick even though Gholston is over rated, but I guarantee the Dolphins will be Super Bowl champs again before the Jets will. GO PHINS!!!!!

  238. April 26, 2008

    Aaron Weissman

Gary; first, waxing melodic over the bread of affliction? I have never tasted a piece of matzah I liked. After a week of the stuff, I know why Moses cried “Let My People Go!”

As for QODT, I have really fallen for Bethel wineries Pinot Noir. Bethel is in Oregon, just off I-5 around Corvallis.

  239. April 26, 2008

    Jarvis

QOTD: If you are ever in Seattle again you have to try Dick’s restaurant. Its a local family owned fast food restaurant. I would recommend that you try a deluxe, the fries and the shakes.

  240. April 26, 2008

    Rick D

Great show. I love to find little gems like Pomum. It usually happens when you tour wine country checking out whatever you come to. I am currently having fun trying to taste wine form all continents. I am relatively new wine, so there are many flavors and aromas that I still need to experience. Gotta love the
homework! Trying a Falesco Umbria Merlot tonight.

  241. April 26, 2008

    Silas

    QOTD:
Come to Memphis, TN. Go to Erling Jensen’s Restaurant. Get the duck and a glass of good merlot. That combination is made of win, sir.

  242. April 26, 2008

    Kirk (AKA: Slave2thevine)

Good show…always like to hear that there are more wines comming out of Yakima as I used to train there.

QOTD: I reccomend that you take Lizzy on a vacation up to Maine for a few days this summer…eat some Lobster and enjoy a few Smog-free days…

  243. April 26, 2008

    Yamashtashta

QOTD: 96 Dom Dujac Clos de roche, 01 Cocito barberesco, and 04 Grammona grand cuvee cava. All solid as the ground that they rose from. I also recommend reading the Atlantic magazine about R. Parker. Search the archives. I think its December 00. It is worth the time to have a little undrstanding of one most powerful consumer critics ever.

  244. April 26, 2008

    Charlie Berg

stellar show Gary, about your great grandfather Shaya we can certaintly appreciate because my wife Anastasia moved from russia to virginia 4 years ago. You’re definitely in a kinda different mood, but all in all a very up-beat show. Good Job. QOTD: Sassoregale, Maremma Toscana, 2001 $13.00 Great stony, leathery blackberries and licorice; well balanced, great price-point.

  245. April 26, 2008

    Mogen David

Ruff! Ruff! What Lassie? Timmy has fallen down the well?! Ruff! Ruff! Gary has stolen the Afekomen?!

Gary look at my name! HA! HA!

    Happy Pesach!

  246. April 26, 2008

    BW

    QOTD:
I would highly recommend Epoch Estate Wines from Paso Robles (although you can’t buy them yet). This is a new winery which is destined to be a cult classic. I have heard that some of the big names in cult wines from the central coast have been barrel tasting & are blown away with the quality. Their website is supposed to be up next week before Hospice du Rhone. Get signed up before it’s too late!

  247. April 26, 2008

    darin latimer

this copied and pasted from the New York Time’s draft coverage…

Jets fans are clearly the loudest bunch here, and they seemed to approve of this pick, chanting Gholston’s name before and after the selection. With Ryan and McFadden already taken, the Jets’ choice became less interesting. But Gholston seems to be a perfect fit for the Jets’ 3-4.

  248. April 26, 2008

    Toby (DK)

    Hey Mr. G.V.

Thanks for today’s show – nice “vibe” :-)

QOTD: I am sure you know of Pingus, but if my memory serves me right you have not tried it on WLTV. I have tried Pingus once, and it is definitely one of the very best (new generation) Spanish wines I have had – but it IS quite expensive! A GREAT alternative is Flor De Pingus – the 2. wine from the producer. I believe you get 70-75 % of the taste, at 1/10 of the cost!

So my recommendation is: Pingus and/or Flor De Pingus.

(The producer is Danish, so for that reason I do think of it, as something a bit special :-)

Now when I have the chance, I will dare to recommend just one other wine to you – I was at a particularly interesting 96′-champagne-tasting about one year ago, where I tried the Fleury Pere & Fils 1996. It stacked up amazingly well against the big producers, such as La Grande Dame, Cuvee William Deutz etc., especially considering the low price point.

…So my second recommendation is: Fleury Pere & Fils, in a good vintage (1990,1996 etc.)

I hope you will find these wines worth trying…

  249. April 26, 2008

    damien

i recommend a frozen yogurt place called pink berry. i think they have them in new york but if not come to southern california, do a book signing and try some while your here! it’s tart like yogurt is supposed to taste, not sweet and sugary and the toppings are excellent. also if you come to orange county visit a very cool store, hi times wine cellars in costa mesa.

  250. April 26, 2008

    BobbyTiger

Another good one Gary……lotsa stuff going on. I would like to recommend a Crios de Susana Balbo Torrentes. Or…………….just bout anything else that she produces.

  251. April 26, 2008

    Justin Viger

I recommend the self-titled debut album from “Hercules and Love Affair”.

  252. April 26, 2008

    Kurt

Wow, J-E-T-S got a great pick with Vernon Gholston. Good call…and the Vaynerchuk cameo streak continues…

Oh yeah, great show too. Can’t wait for my Secret Pack.

  253. April 26, 2008

    Donna Marie

GV, Thanks for the 30th Anniversary shout-out–awesome.

QOTD: Oriel Prosecco, and if you’re gravitating back to some Zins, I enjoy Michael Chiarello’s Napa wines–might be too much of a fruit bomb for you. Also a Zin from Columbia Valley–Newburgh, Oregon—”The Pines 1852″. We had the 2001–more your style. Reminded me a little of a Neyers Zin.

  254. April 26, 2008

    George from NEPA

QOTD: What would I recommend to you, good question. Well you seem to like to think about life often. Are you into Philosophy at all? I would totally recommend reading some Nietzsche or Socrates. You are totally the opposite of the Allegory of the cave. Check it out and let me know what you think. Also, speaking of books, one of my former professors edits the series XXXXXX and Philosophy. He has a huge catalog of stuff like The office and philosophy, matrix and philosophy, baseball and philosophy. Puts a spin on different pop culture things and how you can really get more out of them. That is if you want to.

    Take care man.

    George

    Keith Brown

    QOTD: I recommend… DECAF!!!

Recommendation #2: Keep doing what you are doing. I’ve been watching your episodes from #1 and it has been fun to see you evolve. You turned the corner on episode 58/59 and certainly in #60. Thank you for being so genuine and honest. I’ve learned more from you about wines in the past couple of weeks since I found your website than I have in the past 15 years or so that I have been drinking wine. Thank you. Sally G

  258. April 26, 2008

    Kate

    QOTD: I recommend staying awesome.

Great Show Gary, Would love to find and experience the Pomum. Maybe I will find one in 10 days from now when I drive through Walla Walla and will be visiting the Couger Crest and L’Ecole wineries. Congrats on making it 3 seasons in a row on ESPN draft show. Saw you at least 3 times.
QOTD: 1. 2006 Andre Neveu Sancerre 2. 2004 Charles Krug Generations 3. 2005 Domaine du Grand Tinel Alescis Establet Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Not necesarily in that order although that would be a good order to try them. Matter of fact, those 3 would make a great episode of WLTV.

    Gary,

You’ve been educating me and entertaining me for the past two years while I fly into combat. My routine before flying to Iraq/Afghanistan is to always donwload a bunch of podcasts, so I can watch them as I cruise over the Atlantic or in my tent in the Desert. Please give a shout out to my Military Family at Charleston AFB, SC….many wine lovers fly the might C-17A Globemaster III.

QOTD: try a vertical (03, 04 & 05) of Chateau Bolaire Bordeaux Superieur. Why? Just for the amount of Petit Verdot. The blend is 35% Petit Verdot, 34% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon. I’m giddy. Not your typical blend with 5% of PV or less.

  267. April 27, 2008

Fun show today GV, a few more episodes and you’ve smoked Mr. Wizard. QOTD: I’m going to do a non-wine recommendation and go the literary route, in honor of your book. I’m a huge fan of the Beat generation and the writers that came out of that era, especially Jack Kerouac. I recommend you pick up a copy of On the Road or Dharma Bums by Kerouac. That man brought the thunder in ways others could only dream of. And the next time you’re out in San Francisco, you can roll by the house where Jack finished writing On the Road. Keep it real.

    hey Gar
Thanks for another great show. we had a nice wine tonight that I can recommend – Tablas Creek Vinyard 2004 Esprit de Beucastel from Paso Robles – got a good score but the blend sounded intreging and – while not as much as I’d hoped on the nose – this wine DID deliver some thunder on the palate. Try if it you can. RD

QOTD I recommend you put a couple bottles of a delicious White Burgundy in your suitcase and take Lizzie to St. John in the USVI. Sit on a balcony, watch the sun set and sip one bottle. Then head with the other bottle (call about a corkage fee) to the Lime Inn for some Caribbean Lobster. Come back with a glass each left in your bottle, watch the stars and think how beautiful and peaceful the world can be. If you can’t go, I recommend you fantasize and make your own fun in NJ.

Its a shame that all wines do not give percentages of composition. I remember when I was trying to introduce my GE-coworkers to wine in the 1970’s, that newcomers where against the french wines because that were not named CS, merlot etc. I had a co-worker, that would not buy French bordeau because of this. And I tried to explain to him that the blend of varieties came from centuries of trial and error.

I will need to search out Pomum Cellars while I am visting “Four Lakes Chelan” this fall during the crush.

I just discovered your show last week and am already addicted! Love the archives. Thank you so much for all this helpful advice to wine newbies.

Hey, what do you think about those 187ml bottles? I love the size since I’m a lightweight girl and can only handle one glass. I wish more good wines came in that size. The only brand I can stand in that size is the Big House white.

I went to a local wine shop here in Nebraska and when I asked for 187ml bottle size they practically threw me out, and were so snobby. What a shame! Now I’ll never go back. They should have just explained why they don’t want to carry that size.

Would love to have a signed copy of the book. ;-)

Hey man, thnx for at great show!!

Enjoy watching you often and always!!!

Hey I haven´t seen you try a lot of Greek wine, witch I think has a alot of potential!!!

Note one of the best whites I have had, Domaine Sigalas Assyrtiko 2003, from the Island of Santorini, which is AWESOME!! (By the way, all of Paris past vintages before -03 has been awesome, and mindblowing!)

And on the red side, not so awesome but very interesting indegious grape Xinomavro! (meninig of the black sour!) were I can recomend the domaine Kir-Yiannis red ; Ramnista (of 1999/1997/2000) of Naoussa.
And another producer which is interesting is the Argatia of Naoussa. Also I have tried a great xino, of Boutari and their 1998 Gran reserve Xinomavro, which I truly truly enjoyed.

Well the third and probably the most famous Greek grape is the Agiorgitiko, which you can find great producers as Mikroklima and etc.

Well looking forward to see lots and lots of you in the future!!!

    Best of regards

QOTD: I am opening a 1999 Chateau Pavie with my twin brother tonight for our birthday, I’ve never had a Pavie yet…but I have a good feeling it will be a good one to recommend. I’ll know in a few hours. Cpiess recommended 2005 Don Melchor, which is one of my favorites, don’t do that until I buy a few bottles. I want to make sure I get some before the Vayner effect buys it all up!

Gary – Does Pomum Cellars have any idea you plugged them on Friday? I’ve been exchanging emails with them about placing an order and they wrote back this morning accepting my order but added that “For some mysterious reason we have a huge backlog of orders right now” We all know it’s not such a mystery…..it’s Gary!

    Thanks for the tip.

QOTD: not sure on the specifics, but you should be drinking more Chateneuf-de-pape.

Also, I see the Jets picked up Dustin Keller, not sure how he’ll do in the pros, but as a tight-end he was one of Purdue’s toughest and talented receivers.

Saw you on ESPN yesterday GV, nice work!

    Q-More Italian wines!

  281. April 27, 2008

    Harry

I love these responses. My first recommendation for you and the ever curious Vayner-nation is Radiolab. Its a brilliantly produced radioshow (dl via iTunes or wnyc.org) exploring the mind, the world we live in, and the way the two interact. Sleep, memory, music or even the nature of time are played with from different angles by psychologists and chemists and painters to help give perspective on the world we live in and how we perceive it. Plus its beautiful, with lush auditory illustrations.
For some wine, I’m giving a big shout out to the Cremant de Bourgogne from Trader J’s – a delicious brunch sparkler for under $10 (add a little fresh mango juice – Ceres is awesome – for an easy yummy mimosa), and to the Saint M Riesling, which was utterly delicious with lots of peach and ripe fruit. Yum.

  282. April 27, 2008

    Harry

I also wanted to recommend trying more Nebbiolos from Langhe. I’ve had a few recently and been moved by the complex minerality in them – strong values for Burgundy lovers looking forward to eating at beautiful Italian trattorias this summer.

Dude, try the Galil Mountain Viognier with some matzah — or bread or whatever ‘cuz it’s an awesome wine.
    Or the Gamla Sauvignon Blanc.

Although I had some great Yatir and Carmel Single Vineyard too this Passover. Check out the great Israeli kosher and non-kosher wines for year round!

We recommend “Trappist Monks” monistary made jams and jellies.

They are sooooooooo good; my special prize for you is going to be; a sampling for the Vanerchuks to try.

These jams are so packed with flavor; you will never see blackberries in the same light……they will be elivated to star status.

My shoutout gets selected and somehow “Travis” becomes “Travi”? It’s my high school gym teacher (who insisted on dropping the last letter of everyone’s name) all over again.

    Gary,

    My sincere recommendation for you:

a 5 day stint in Costa Rica with Lizzy, we’ll raid the cellar and have a blast up in a rainforest lodge, talking to wild monkeys. Also, bring down like 200 or 300 books for a signing. How does July 29th sound? we have a wine show that day.

Writing this sunday 6.50 pm… Jets draft, so so, but you did do some serious damage on camera all weekend… it’s like you paid Boomer Berman or something…

I recommend The Rhone de Robles 05′ by Robert Hall. A cali. Rhone styled wine. I wish I had a bottle left. My wine notes are scattered. I remember a nice balance with a new world meets old world style. A very nice wine you should try.

    Recommendations… so many…

Lived in Ontario from 1992 – 2005. You did a few mediocre wines from Pelee Island, which are not bad QPR for Ontario. The govt stores flog Aussie grape juice cause they make lotsa money off it. There are a number of interesting wineries, Lenko, Maliviore, and Angels Gate are just a few. Try some Baco Noir for something different, Henry of Pelham Reserve is usually best.

Living in Texas now. Happy with everything I have had from Becker so far. Getting into a few others, will get back to the list when I have tried more.

Latest QPR winner: winery Verget du Sud, wine Au Fils du Temps, $6 or so Rhone blend.

What people need to try, but have not: old wines. We drink wine very young, and miss out on a whole other world. I think it would be good for you to suggest wines for people to buy and cellar. So many of the worlds great wines need 5 – 10 years, and people never try them that way. So many reasonably priced wines get much better with a few years.

    Cheers, Dave.

    Hey Gary

QOTD: Australian wine from VICTORIA or TASMANIA – you don’t like Barossa Shiraz; OK stop drinking it. Try a King Valley Nebillio or Sangivasse, Yarra Valley Cabernet, Henty Riesling, Bendigo or Grampians Shiraz, Tasmanian Sparkling or Rutherglen fortified.

Went to Sonoma a few months ago armed with my new Vayniac tasting skills, and one smaller winery really stood out to me – Hook & Ladder Winery. I really enjoyed tasting there, and i came home with several bottles of their 2007 Gewurztraminer – I definately reccommend trying it.

    Why not try these?

Mt.Difficulty or Felton Road Pinot Noirs (NZ)

    Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno

Gary – at your request I’m finally stepping out of ‘lurker’ mode, though I’m always watching the podcasts several days “late” so I always feel like people have moved on to the next show by the time I’m ready to comment. Anyway…

I’d recommend visiting Albania. It’s a fantastic country that after years of being downtrodden under one of the most repressive Stalinist regimes in the world, is now finally (slowly) coming into its own. The people are incredibly friendly, and absolutely LOVE visitors from America. The food is amazing – I had better Italian food than I had in Italy – and the wine is quite pleasant, if not stunning. (Most people grow their own grapes and make their own wines, which is a treat. The soil is so rich that each family can easily keep themselves in wine.) And let’s not forget the geography – beautiful mountainous country that slopes down to the Adriatic. As Croatia gets more and more built up, I expect Albania to be the next “hot” beach resort country.

Also, I’m curious – have you tried the Ridge cabernets from the Santa Cruz Mtns? At least one “French wine” snob was convinced by the ‘01 vintage that American wines can be worth drinking.

I strongly recomment the Clos Henri Sauvignon Blanc 2004/2005, this is not your average sauvignon blanc. It’s from Henri Bouregeois, a famous loire wine producer (I believe you did one of their pouilly fumés once)who bought an estate in New Zealand where this wine is from. I love it!

  316. April 28, 2008

    Jez K

Gary, love the show, I’m a lurker but felt I should cross the realm to be a commenter.

I’ve been watching the show for over a year and I gotta ask. Is there any Australian wine that you’ve actually liked?
It’s always ‘fake fruit’ this and ‘over the top’ that. I mean come on, there’s gotta be something that’s good, they all cant be bad.

I’m feeling that you might have some blinkers on there. =)

    Anyhoo, keep bringing the thunder.

    J.K.

QOTD: 2005 Forrest Estate Sauvignon Blanc from NZ. Massive White Grapefruit zest from start to finish, with some sweet melon on the mid-pallet. The finish has the switchblades. The wine totally rocks my socks. For ~$14 USD I think it is a total steal of a deal for anyone. Approachable for noobs, and has some elegance for the oneophile.

QOTD: I recommend you try some wines from some of the vineyards near my home in Connecticut. Stonington Vineyards has a great Cabernet Franc and recently I had the Jonathan Edwards 2005 Napa Valley Petite Sirah (the grapes are grown in Napa, but the wine is made in CT). It was outstanding.

  336. April 28, 2008

I recommend you do a show on wines with crazy names. I just had a Hungarian wine called Bull’s Blood. It was cheap and ok.

  337. April 28, 2008

    DJ Sloop

I also recommend doing a show about different ways to transport wine, which are better, how to remove corks, neat things you can do with corks with a tie in to user submitted creations.

Another great show, yes PASSION is a good thing! I want to get one of the Secret packs to taste along with, but which to choose?

    Isaac R.

QOTD: you should try a Morellino di Scansano called Ghiaccio Forte from Castello Romitorio. It’s only available through an Ohio importer called Belvino. In fact, you might think about doing a Morellino show, given that it’s such a terrific (not to mention underrated) area.

  340. April 28, 2008

    BargePlus

QOTD: I recommend that you do one week’s worth of shows while floating down the Canal du Midi on a barge in the Languedoc region of France. Take your wife; take your brother, but do it (no experience necessary!). You already like these wines, and they’ll taste even better meandering down the Midi with your loved ones. I enjoyed it so much, I even wrote a book about it; check out the 15-page Book Preview: http://www.blurb.com/my/book/detail/42997

How about instead of continuosly swirling the poor wine around as if you were trying to make it sparkling.( everything has a limit) :-) .. you showed the angel tears… the arches the conisitency, the colour, giving your choosen wine a little ‘ elegance’ and charm…

I’m interested in reading your book and comparing your points of views..

Try the “Dare” from Viader. It’s 1/3 the price and I think 100% Cab Franc.

Third time I’m trying to leave a comment, somehow it always get moderated(??!!). Then to the point, QOTD: Chassela based white from Lutry, Canton de Vaud, Switzerland. Honey flavors with nice crispiness!

I’m going to have recommend some Central Cali vino’s.

The first is from a young winemaker who is actually an engieering student:
Ovene Winery, Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard.

The second is anything from Calera. They make some very interesting wines and sometimes use some odd varietals in low production stuff.

    Bevlamo Muscato d’Asti. (Think that’s right…)

The Wife and I buy this from the local Sam’s Club for about 12-14 bones and LOVE it. Very sweet, very light.
Just curious to see what a REAL wine drinker would think of it…

Thanks for all you do, GaryVee. You’re an inspiration…

I recommend you and Mott walk around the Wine Lib…and you randomly pick bottles to taste. Maybe a different section each time? (and stop by the gourmet area and grab some cheeses while you’re at it!)

    Mr.Ambassador

GV – Here’s some recommendations that drink well (at least in the “Pacific Time Zone”). For value the Whitestone Winery “Pieces of Red” blend is a winner. For a really interesting experience try the Zanzibar Cellars “Sandra” blend; an Oregon winery sourcing Horse Heaven Hills (WA) fruit and using the Owen Roe facilities – really intense fruit and heavy, creamy mouthfeel.

Just catching up on this one. not sure its appropriate to leave a recomendation other than try new things and I dont know what you have had.

Ill say a Miner Family Viogner for white

most of my favorite reds you have had (Zardini Valpolichella Classico Superiore, Seoquia Grove cab 2004 etc…) So I will say Castello De Abola 2003 Chianti Riserva. Went to the winery in tuscany and had a wonderfull experience.

QOTD: I’d have to recommend the kimchee fried rice at Daisy Mint in Pasadena, CA. But consider yourself warned… you eat this once and you’ll have cravings for it again within a week.

I recommend the 2006 Chateau Grand Cassagne Rose. $5 makes this a simple, well balanced Rhone rose that is a great QPR–I went back and bought 2 more bottles (and I never do that)!

    Cheers

QOTD – I recommend 2007 Gazela Vinho Verde, Portuguese “green” wine. Very crisp, light and fruity, great spring wine with fresh greens or fish.

Dude, only 366 comments and a free book is on the line. Seriously. Anyway maybe that means my chances are better, even if I am too late for the drawing, LOL.

QOTD – We drink and enjoy BR Cohn Silver Label Cab all the time. Although I have to give you props for Colonia Las Liebres Bonarda – at 5 bones that wine is a steal, and I have been stealing a lot.

    Dave from VA

QOTD: There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on in VA wine. I remember the show you did on VA wines, and I didn’t recognize any of them.

A few things around here I find interesting you might reconsider in VA wine are:
–Veritas Kenmar: a powerfully floral dessert wine
–Any vineyards Cab Franc and Viognier: grapes that have done well in this climate/geography and are staples of the area
–Barboursville Octagon: top notch bordeaux style blend
–Barboursville Nebbiolo: powerful varietal that was great with Christmas dinner last year

Gary I easily reccomend the Seguin Gevrey Chambertin Signature 2005. Priced @ 40 bones, and really bringing the elegant thunder. Tell me if you pick up on the venison marrow, as that’s what interested me about the wine.

Gary: I am a big fan of the 2004 Napa Valley “Fourteen” Meritage. It is a monster of a wine, and damn delicious. I was fortunate enough to get to taste it through the restaraunt I work for – great stuff! Thats what I would recommend for you!

    14% alcohol
    Very inexpensive, very good

Completely agree with Gary on the Pomum Shaya. We were lucky enough to try/buy this wine at the winery (they’re in the “Garage” area of Woodinville,WA) a few months back and were BLOWN away. Almost to the point of wondering if this is a fluke. Javier set the bar high for himself when he made this. Let’s hope he isn’t the Don McLean of the WA wine scene :)

I’ve been to the last 6 spring release weekends in both Walla Walla and Woodinville, and I can’t remember a more impressive bottle of juice then the Shaya. Seriously, we’re talking Spring Valley Uriah, Cougar Crest Syrah, K Vintners single vineyard, early 2000’s Delille D2, older Woodward Canyon, type quality here. But this really takes it to a new level, I think Gary said Bordeaux-ish and I have to agree. Reminds me of the early 2000 Lynch-Bages but with a more interesting fruit profile.

It has all the structure to age well but it’s VERY drinkable now. I’d love to blind taste this against other world class blends and see what happens.

I’ve got a 1/2 case and plan on staggering my tastings over the next 2-8 years, should be fun.

Also, check out Sparkman Wines. Another “Garage” winery (and a protege of Mark Ryan). Really good stuff as well.

QOTD: Jessup Cellars 2005 Table for Four. Another one of those wines you can only get at the winery or select restaurants, but it totally blew me away last time I was there. Lots of cherry, chocolate, and dark fruit on the front and midpalate with a huge silky vanilla/butterscotch finish. Incredibly smooth and well balanced killer wine.

I recommend a Scurati or a Cerasuolo from Italy. Cerasuolo are dark Rose and Scurati is a dark red.

I gotta recommend this great wine I tried the other day. Keep in mind that I normally don’t like white wines, they’re usually either too acidic or too fruity for my tastes but the 2006 Peltier Station Viognier blew my socks off. Not only is it the best white wine I’ve ever had but it very well have given me the best wine experience of any wine I’ve ever tried.

QOTD: I reccommend the following. I had this at an Irish restaurant in Washington, DC last week. It sounds so wrong, but it tastes so right!!!

    FRIED BRIE!!!!! (RECIPE FOLLOWS)

    Make a simple beer batter:
    1 cup Bisquick
    1/2 Teaspoon Salt
    1 Egg
Mix these together and add 1/2 cup of beer, Mix thoroughly.

Heat oil (deep fryer, saucepot, etc BE CAREFUL with open flame) to 300-350.

Dip a wedge of Brie cheese or similiar soft cheese in the beer batter.

Fry that bad boy up, then serve with fruit preserves of your choice(raspberry, passion fruit, etc) on sliced, soft, baguette bread.

Add you choice of beverage (works with wine or Guiness-the beer that drinks like a meal), and some friends and family, and you’re good to go!

    Bon Apetit!!!

Qotd: I recommend that everyone go to Europe at least once; BLT’s with ripe summer tomatoes and good crusty bread; foie gras; standing on the beach and letting your toes sink into the sand with each wave; star gazing in the midwest where there’s no light pollution; riding a horse at a full tilt gallop; eating BBQ in Lockhart, Texas; and snorkeling in the south pacific.

    I could go on ;-)

Sorry I have been so long in responding, work has been a killer.

    Nice episode.

QOTD – I want you to begin recommending basic wines for beginners, (and I think you will address this in your book)

For me starting out I want something along a wine 101 for the different varieties. I am doing that to a large degree on my own but would like a more structured framework to work with.

I also want you to have a guest spit bucket when you have a guest on the show. I think you could be very creative with this bucket and would add a new feature to the programs.

As always I so enjoy this program. Keep on keeping on good sir.

    hey viniacs

I am really only new to this wine thing and been watching for about a month now. I was recently in the Barrosa Valley in Australia (OTT STUFF)… after doing 2 days of tasting i came across a red i really enjoyed from

Chateau Tanunda (reasonably small boutique winery) the 2005 SHIRAZ named the Chateau. is apparently from 100-year old vines (I had a look at the VINES.. they looked bloody old) only probably 30 actual plants. it has an extremely good sniffy sniff. at about 50 bones australian its not cheap thats about 70 US. I really havnt tasted a lot of great wine but for me it was way way better than anything else i have tasted..

now GARY.. what is with the continual (over the top “FAKE”) tast you keep refering to with Australian wine.. anyhow love the show keep it up!

    Dewayne !~

Great story about your great grandfather. Nice to see you had some moments with him in Russia ( #1 ) and in America. Dont ever forget them. Another score for Washington state! YEA!! *gloats* That Pomum sounds delicious, I swear Ive seen them around and I know I’ve heard of them. Have to check them out someday. QOTD: Im going down the music avenue and saying Naked City. Wild jazz band that was part jazz, part avant garde, part rock, part speed metal, all insanity. John Zorn honking on his sax and Bill Frisell ripping the guitar to name a few. Great band but hard to digest. You’ve been warned.
