Gary, Nice work on the draft, I think that you were a little sad that you didn’t get McFadden and my Raiders did get him. I know you predicted it, but it’s gonna hurt to have him run circles around the Jets in October.

QOTD: I’ve had a couple of South African wines but nothing notable.

    Never had either one.

QOTD: I think I’ll go with the 2005 Kanu Chenin Blanc from South Africa as the best. We had it at a wine dinner with the rabbit roulade and succotash course.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a SA white (reds and pinks, but not whites). The only Austrians I’ve had are GVs, and I lean towards the apple/pear/peach whites than the citrus whites, and so none really struck me as being all that great. I do have a Riesling or two from Austria waiting in the wings, though. . . .

Thanks for the show again, GV! Picked up a 6-pack of the Pomum Shya thanks to your recco on Friday – hoping it brings the thunder! Am thinking it will, as our pals hang out well together with Bordeaux blends.

QOTD: I know, I know, I need to drink more whites – I am pretty much focused on German rieslings and stickies from Sauternes, but I do need to explore more whites this summer. That being said, can’t recall the last SA or Austrian white. Probably some Gewurtz from Austria maybe, I dont know.

Love minerality!!!! Another great show!!! Try Maryland and Virginia wines!!! or at least let us know what you think of the Norton (…and not the Norton from the Honeymooners!)

QOTD: I’m one of the ones that hadn’t ever had one.

I always get good value out of the show.

QOTD: Probably a Gruner, but the maker’s name is eluding me at the moment. I’ve only had some of the more generic South African wines.

Best Austrian: 2006 Hofer Grüner Veltliner Freiberg

    TN:
    bio-dynamic and organic.
    nose: initially dark chocolately nose..
mouth: grass and apples, vegetables and zesty. good acidity and minerals… interesting and bit peppery/spicy.
did notice some crystal/sediment sitting on the bottom of the bottle and after pouring they floated around the bottle. I am guessing that adds to the zesty and spritzy vibe. Definitely not a bad bottle with which to start into the Gruner’s, looking forward to more from Austria.

Interesting episode. QOTD – none, yet.

I’m OK with GruVs, not completely, insanely mad about them compared to Alsace or Rueda or anything Riesling & Chenin, but pretty solid, especially if Willi Brundlmayer is involved. Definately more ZZZZAP than PAZZZZ!

That S.A. white sounds almost too complex to be true, maybe in a couple of years I might have enough experience to appreciate & understand it!

QOTD – Best Austrian = Freie Weingartner Wachau 2004 Federspiel Grüner Veltliner. Best South African = Rijk’s Private Cellar 2005 Barrel fermented Chenin Blanc (absolutely sublime).

QOTD: Best Austrian wine was a Gru-Vee, but without my wine diary in front of me, I cannot recall the name. I don’t think I’ve had a South African white yet.
