QOTD: Best Austrian wine was a Gru-Vee, but without my wine diary in front of me, I cannot recall the name. I don’t think I’ve had a South African white yet.

  14. April 28, 2008

    Karl Laczko

I’m OK with GruVs, not completely, insanely mad about them compared to Alsace or Rueda or anything Riesling & Chenin, but pretty solid, especially if Willi Brundlmayer is involved. Definately more ZZZZAP than PAZZZZ!

That S.A. white sounds almost too complex to be true, maybe in a couple of years I might have enough experience to appreciate & understand it!

QOTD – Best Austrian = Freie Weingartner Wachau 2004 Federspiel Grüner Veltliner. Best South African = Rijk’s Private Cellar 2005 Barrel fermented Chenin Blanc (absolutely sublime).

Interesting episode. QOTD – none, yet.

Best Austrian: 2006 Hofer Grüner Veltliner Freiberg

    TN:
    bio-dynamic and organic.
    nose: initially dark chocolately nose..
mouth: grass and apples, vegetables and zesty. good acidity and minerals… interesting and bit peppery/spicy.
did notice some crystal/sediment sitting on the bottom of the bottle and after pouring they floated around the bottle. I am guessing that adds to the zesty and spritzy vibe. Definitely not a bad bottle with which to start into the Gruner’s, looking forward to more from Austria.

I always get good value out of the show.

QOTD: Probably a Gruner, but the maker’s name is eluding me at the moment. I’ve only had some of the more generic South African wines.

  18. April 28, 2008

QOTD: I’m one of the ones that hadn’t ever had one.

  19. April 28, 2008

Love minerality!!!! Another great show!!! Try Maryland and Virginia wines!!! or at least let us know what you think of the Norton (…and not the Norton from the Honeymooners!)

    GrapeStuff

Thanks for the show again, GV! Picked up a 6-pack of the Pomum Shya thanks to your recco on Friday – hoping it brings the thunder! Am thinking it will, as our pals hang out well together with Bordeaux blends.

QOTD: I know, I know, I need to drink more whites – I am pretty much focused on German rieslings and stickies from Sauternes, but I do need to explore more whites this summer. That being said, can’t recall the last SA or Austrian white. Probably some Gewurtz from Austria maybe, I dont know.

  21. April 28, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

I don’t think I’ve ever had a SA white (reds and pinks, but not whites). The only Austrians I’ve had are GVs, and I lean towards the apple/pear/peach whites than the citrus whites, and so none really struck me as being all that great. I do have a Riesling or two from Austria waiting in the wings, though. . . .

  22. April 28, 2008

    David Dadekian

QOTD: I think I’ll go with the 2005 Kanu Chenin Blanc from South Africa as the best. We had it at a wine dinner with the rabbit roulade and succotash course.

  23. April 28, 2008

    Chris

Gary, Nice work on the draft, I think that you were a little sad that you didn’t get McFadden and my Raiders did get him. I know you predicted it, but it’s gonna hurt to have him run circles around the Jets in October.

QOTD: I’ve had a couple of South African wines but nothing notable.

  27. April 28, 2008

    manonthemoon

Great show, starting to crave a white now that the temps are warming. Sorry the jets and you had a rough weekend, I think you reached with the TE in the 1st and the DE might not be the superstar pass rusher that some people think at the next level. Of course this is a good thing for my dirty fish who I thought did well, but next year is going to be another brutal top 10 draft pick year.

QOTD: Would have to be be a Gruner from Anton Bauer, but I am not supper familiar with the area. Definately have to check into SA since Chenin is getting big there and I love a good vouvray.

  28. April 28, 2008

    saw you on ESPN

  30. April 28, 2008

    The Lukas

QOTD: Gary, i’ll be honest with you.
I’ve been “in to” wine for 6 months or so, and i’ve tried wines from all over.
I go into stores, and buy the wines i haven’t heard of.
I drink them, i share them, but i find it hard to keep track.
If i find a wine i like, i write it down, but i’m more interesting in trying new things than buying the same wine again.
I seem to like interesting wines more than “good” wines.
I’d rather have a wine that has a weird and cool smell, than just a standard good wine.
I have tried many wines from South Africa, i just can’t remember them.

  31. April 28, 2008

    mazdaspeedy3

I’ve never had a SA white wine that I thought was good, the burnt rubber thing that so many SA wines get is a HUGE turn off.

Austrian white wines are interesting, can’t think of producers at the moment, but I love the acidity and minerality of these wines.

I’ve been drinking more serious white wine lately, but it’s kinda frustrating when many people around me seem to dismiss white wine and are drinking boring reds instead and thinking their wine experience is somehow superior.

  32. April 28, 2008

    Geoff

QOTD: Hard to say, had great wines from Hiedler, Brundlmeyer, Nikolaihof, but probably the best was a Nigl Piri Privat Riesling, laser sharp but with the weight of a smaragd…and I second jpwardaia’s request for you to “step outside of the box” and try some Nortons (vitis aestivalis), America’s true grape.

  33. April 28, 2008

Gar, the 2005 Hirtzberger Gruner Veltliner Rots Tor , is so friggin’ fabulous.. and is just sublime Gruner. Drink more gruner, folks.. and Ott makes great value gruners..You should taste some Hirtzberger, Pichler and Schloss Gobelsberg to name a few.

  34. April 28, 2008

    chenin

I had the 2006 Ott Fass 4 at Christmas and think it’s good.
Last bottle will be with a nice chicken on a sunny spring day.

  35. April 28, 2008

    Micha

Again an impressing show, Gary! I Like the “Zzzap Thing” ;-) Had some midrange Gruene Veltliners in the past. Mostly good stuff, but not so up my palate in case of to high accidity, minerality and the typical white pepper finish. Never had the OTT yet. Will be interessting.

  36. April 28, 2008

    Craig Owen

QOTD – the 2003 Hiedler Riesling Smaragd Heiligenstein. One huge, palate-coating, dry, exotic-as-all-get-out mofo of a wine. Didn’t once regret spending the $36 on this one.

  37. April 28, 2008

    Ondra

Did I hear you mention The Czech Republic for the first time ever? Cool! Bet you´ve never tried any Czech wine. Shall I send you a secret pack?

QOTD: 2006 dry Riesling from Weingut Neustifter in Poysdorf

  38. April 28, 2008

QOTD: Nigl “Senftenberger Piri”, Kremstal, Austria. Yummy.

  39. April 28, 2008

    Kev and Ams

QOTD: I have only had a Pinotage from South Africa. It was good.

  40. April 28, 2008

    Zinny

Nice show. I also marvel at how anybody can be a wine lover and not like *any* white wine . .or pink wine (Eric Asimov says he doesn’t like rose? c’mon) or even this varietal or that (anything but chardonnay? – ridiculous!). There’s so much out there that blanket statements like that are an obvious red flag that a person doesn’t really know what they’re talking about and needs to get out and taste some more. Well . .Eric Asimov certainly knows what he’s talking about but I still disagree about rose.

QOTD – I have only tried GV once – after watching one of your other shows about it I picked up the 2006 Schloss Gobelsburg. I liked it a lot.

  41. April 28, 2008

“…And the Jets win the Superbowl!” great quote on ESPN following the jets reaction of getting Gholston. I know you guys were really hoping that McFadden would fall to you, but that would be expecting too much thought from Al Davis. Hate to tell you this, but Gholston was not what you were hoping for going into the draft. GO SEAHAWKS!!!

I saw you several times during Saturday’s broadcast, what’s up with pointing at your head?

QOTD: I have no idea. Way too much going on to keep track of what I drink.

  42. April 28, 2008

    Sam Brower

Absoultely great show! I would love to try the Ott or Palladius at some point!

  43. April 28, 2008

QOTD: Prager Gruner Veltliner – don’t remember the year

  44. April 28, 2008

    Orion

I was much more in to beer when I was living in Salzburg, so I never took great notice of what wine I was drinking, but I remember the seasonal wine Sturm, which thinking back was just fermenting must I believe. They only served it for the period of about a month, which must have been shortly after harvest, but it was everywhere. I’m sure if it’s still fermenting, they can’t bottle it and export it, though, so you’d have to go there in season to get it, which is wholly worthwhile for a plethora of reasons.

  45. April 28, 2008

    Dr. Dan

Thanks for the Gruner Veltliner show. I bought some of the Fass 4 several weeks ago, but haven’t picked them up yet from WL. Now, I’m excited to try one. Sorry, I’ve been “comment” absent lately.

  46. April 28, 2008

    Al

Great show today, Gary. Lot’s of wine talk.

  47. April 28, 2008

    David M Roberts

QOTD: It was a South African (Sauvignon Blanc, I believe) called “Headbutt,” which depicted two horn entangled rams on the label. Really crisp and clean, with great minerality. Can’t find it anywhere now.

  48. April 28, 2008

    Kdawg

QOTD: I haven’t had any austrian whites, but, checking them out is on the docket for this year for me. As far as south african, I’ve had some really good sauvignon blancs with the 06 De Grendel Sauvignon Blanc being really enjoyable and the 06 Mulderbosch SB also being really enjoyable. I also enjoyed a 06 Seidelberg Viognier recently too. I’ve really been enjoying the whites from South Africa a lot more then the reds

  49. April 28, 2008

    KenP

    Fine ep!

  50. April 28, 2008

    FJDR

QOTD: You’re right – I’ve had neither a S. African nor an Austrian white. Good show today, I’ll have to see if I can find a Gruner around here.

  51. April 28, 2008

    Siggi from Iceland

QOTD: I would have to say Brundlmayer Gruner Veltliner Kamptaler Terrassen 2006, in South Africa I would have to say Glen Carlou Tortoise Hill Sauvignon Blanc/Chardonnay 2007 witch was quiet good for it´s price.

  52. April 28, 2008

    purplejuicebruce

I just can’t seem to shake the habit of drinking RED wines
most white wines I have tasted are usualy ok but come on
they don’t come close to bringing the THUNDER of a red.

  53. April 28, 2008

    KVolk

    QOTD: Never have tried either

Thanks for teaching me about another great varietal…..

  54. April 28, 2008

    Genghis Philip

    Great episode, Gary!
QOTD: I’ve never had any, sorry.

I’d like to say though, that as I try to plot out finances for the next year, I’m definitely allocating a wine budget– seems like a sound idea, and that’s 100% Gary V influence.

  55. April 28, 2008

    Jeff T

QOTD: It was a south african chardonnay, the 2006 Hamilton Russell. I would describe the wine alot like Gary described the 3rd wine in this episode. Huge and creamy in the mouth with an awesome acidic finish.

  56. April 28, 2008

    rajiv a

Both from a south africa tasting with Peter Morales:

    2006 Groote Post Chenin Blanc
    COLOR: Pale yellow
NOSE: Warm fruit, slight yeast, slight grapefruit bitterness (seriously, the nose smelled bitter somehow).
PALATE: Crisp acidity, a little off-dry. Slight “minerality” perhaps on the finish. Pretty good, all in all.

    Also:

    Chardonnay/Semillon blend.

NOSE: Quite rice-like. Green tea with matcha. Faint petrol. Faint honey. When I came back to it, at room temperature, rice and honey dominated. Quite good.
PALATE: Only medium acidity, and some clear residual sugar. Hints of cheap apple candy.
OVERALL: Great nose, don’t like the palate. But apart from RS, quite good.

  57. April 28, 2008

    rajiv a

The chard/semillon blend was the 2006 Boschendal Le Pavillon

  58. April 28, 2008

    Matthew Hale

QOTD: I just finished my first ever South African white wine which would make it my best as well. It was a 2006 Kanu Chenin Blanc. I also had my first Italian white wine over the weekend. It was a 2003 Borgo Magredo Friuli Grave Pinot Grigio. I wrote tasting notes for both wines on Cellar Tracker.

I’m eating overcooked asparagus right now and it tastes exactly like corn on the cob. Weird.

  59. April 28, 2008

    Jay

Good show. I love the burger reference.

    QOTD: Never had one.

  60. April 28, 2008

    Cliff and Darcey

QOTD: I had an exceptional Chenin Blanc from South Africa once … damned if I can remember who made it though!

  61. April 28, 2008

    John Farrin

QOTD:2005 Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch; 2005 – Meerlust Chardonnay Stellenbosch; Also have a couple viogniers in the stash. No Austrians

btw. Nice try at being cool about the draft, but I guess it helps keeping the excitement level down when you tape the episode BEFORE the draft. And don’t even try to deny it. There is no way on God’s green earth that you could have contained yourself about calling their first pick on last Friday’s show.

  62. April 28, 2008

    Palmer

QOTD: Schmelz Pichel Point Gruner Veltliner ‘06 (16 bones, 91 points Tanzer) was amazing – definitely the Austrian or South African white that stands out. Tasted it at my first Third Thirsty Thursday. Next TTT is South Africa and we’re tasting two Chenin Blancs (one a late harvest dessert wine) so that should be interesting.

  63. April 28, 2008

    Deano

Gary great episode the last wine sounds awesome but i am a baller on a budget and that isnt in my budget :(

    QOTD:
-Never have had a wine from those regions :(

  64. April 28, 2008

    BCWinesAreIn

QOTD: Had a chance to try the Palladius from the Sadie family. I really quite liked it. Up here in BC it was around $90. Not sure if I’d drop $90 on it but it was good.

  65. April 28, 2008

    tulliaferox

Where are we being zapped? It sounds kind of painful. Kudos for making SportCenter — bringing the passion even on the weekend.

QOTD: We don’t have any South African wines on our tasting list, which with my bad memory is the only way I remember what I’ve drunk.

  66. April 28, 2008

    Lois and Greg

    QOTD: Rustenberg Chard.
Great job at the NFL draft.

  67. April 28, 2008

    Scott EJ

    Love the Gruner. So versatile.

QOTD: 05′ Stollenbosch Chardonay, South Africa. Big, fleshy, not too creamy. Love the helium component. I really think SA is making a name for itself in Chards. Hell…white wines, in general.

  68. April 28, 2008

    Greg B

Big G, Love the Passion! I’m drinking a 2006 “K” Viognier from the Columbia Valley and while I’m watching your show It got me to analyze the Wine so deeply that I found nuances that I would never have found. RADOOL BRO!

QOTD: I’m going to have to expand to South Africa and Austria.

  69. April 28, 2008

    Dominus

I was psyched for a “serious” white wine show. Good job.

QOTD: My fav Austrian white wine has to be the Anton Bauer Groovy. Love the stuff.

NFL Draft: We got another horse to protect SuperMan when Jeff Saturday retires. Go Colts!

    Kristen

Thanks for coming through with the shout-out today GV! Loved the episode!! Good energy and excellent wines!

QOTD: Never had a South African wine that I’ve liked…I’ve tried different varietals and producers and I always smell and taste peanuts and feet. Eek! But I’m going to try them some more and do an South African wine tasting this Friday. I had an amazing Austrian wine (not a Gruner, more like a Riesling although I know that wasn’t it) at our last wine tasting group. I’ve always appreciated Austrian wines- I think they are really well made!

  75. April 28, 2008

    BobbyTiger

Have had So. African reds, but no whites. Ditto for Austria. It’s probably because we don’t do a lot of whites. But…………..summer is coming, so who knows? (The Shadow does)

GV, my favorite episodes are those that expand my knowledge, thanks! QOTD: we’ve had that one with the vertical green label, it was ok

  77. April 28, 2008

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: I havent had a south african or austrian wine in a while (red or white). The best that I can remember was the ‘05 Spier Private Sauvignon Blanc or the Waterford Sauvignon Blanc (I dont remember the vintage I had).

  78. April 28, 2008

Great show, always nice to learm about another varietal.
QOTD: I don’t think I have had any

Gary-Great Ep!!!!! Keep challenging ALL of the Vayniacs to try different varietals!!! We all tend to get stuck in a rut!!!!! :)

  80. April 28, 2008

    amgryger

QOTD: Have only tried one South African white wine so far, which was a chenin blanc, and my first Austrian wine will be the Schloss Gobelsburg 2005 Renner Gruner Veltliner that is sitting on the rack in my kitchen. I’ll probably pop it within the next month or two.

  81. April 28, 2008

    M

QOTD: So far every red or white I’ve tasted from South Africa has been a disappointment. BUT I won’t give up. GV would say 0 for 5 is not a big enough sampling. On the other hand I’ve enjoyed 2 of 2 Austrian reds. Haven’t had any white yet. I’ll put Gru-Vee on the “to do” list after I taste a Greco di Tufo. Soon. Definitely soon. I’m in PA. It’s not so easy to find interesting wine without crossing state lines.

  82. April 28, 2008

    Pete G

Nice passion in the house today. Good to see you amped up on some not too common wines. Need to experiment with some higher end Gruners myself.

QOTD: Mulderosh sav blanc (believe it was 05) sticks out although I did have a pretty good Austrian riesling few years back that was very Moselish.

  83. April 28, 2008

    Terrance

I miss the ‘oohh this’ in the opener!

QOTD: I’ve had both but not enough to really pick a best. They were all good. If I had to say I would actually say a rose sparkler I had from SA, but that’s neither still nor white.

  84. April 28, 2008

    Taylor

Great show big wines and big scores.
QOTD I cant think of the last one on the top of my head recently it was prob a trimbach

  85. April 28, 2008

    Anthony L.

Never had a south african or Australian white before.

Can’t wait to try the gruners, haven’t had them either.

  86. April 28, 2008

Super episode! I love the big white that bring the thunder!
    QoTd
    Never tried either areas.

  87. April 28, 2008

    Sarah

I love Gruner! Top 5 for sure.

I happened to have a bottle of the Berhard Gruner so I tasted it along with you. My notes were pretty similar (peaches, limeade, slate, very rich, mouthfilling….). I was pretty psyched about that.

Can’t wait for the Secret packs.

QOTD: I love the Hopler wines from Austria. Their Gruner is consistently good, but they have a single vineyard Pinot Noir that is fantastic. I’m spacing on the name though. The grapes are grown next to a salt lake and the wine picks up some salinity on the nose. Very interesting.

  88. April 28, 2008

    BW

QOTD: It’s actually the fass 4 – which I got earlier this year from WL.

GV – Is it for Gary Vay-ner-chuck OR ….. Gruner Velt-lin-er

  89. April 28, 2008

    pete c

    Love the GV’s…all types.

Thanks for a good show, GV.

  90. April 28, 2008

I haven’t had any yet! I did complete the task for this past week and got some Greco Di Tufo and had it with some brie stuffed chicken, YUM!

  91. April 28, 2008

    Jared Pondelik

Great show Gary! Thanks for throwing down another.

QQTD: I have actually never had a South African or Austrian wine. I am definitely going to buy one soon though to experience them.

  92. April 28, 2008

    Mickster

JETS shout-out. GV – I know you’re trying to cut down the shout-outs, but how about a shout out for Rutgers Football for producing Brandon Renkart, ‘07 captain that just signed with the Jets! Keep it in the state (at least with playing fields).

  93. April 28, 2008

Those sound like truly interesting wines. Thanks.

QOTD: The only Austrian wine was the 2004 Höpler Grüner Veltliner, clean and crisp. Really did enjoy it. I’ve had a Bunde Star red blend from South Africa as well, but it was nothing special.

    Always great show!!

LOL @ GV on sports center!! You would miss it if you blinked! Still, props for getting on there, it’s still somewhat of an accomplishment!

    QOTD: never had one

QOTD – My wife finds that she cannot drink white wine without getting a headache so we go red all the time.

You seem to have some friends over at ESPN or pay the camera guy a nice tip to make sure you make the highlights of the draft each year too…. LOL, no to shabby.

Keep the variety coming, I hear it is the spice of life.

QOTD – Had some good gruner veltliners, but can’t remember which ones.

  99. April 28, 2008

Shocked that no one has mentioned that Oregon has started making Gruner Veltliner. The two that I’m aware of are Reustle Vineyards in the Umpqua Valley near Roseburg (the first in the USA) and Daedalus Cellars in the Willamette Valley.

I got one, have had one for some time, I am running the 1/2 marathon in Santa Barbara on 5/10/08, will take pictures while running and at the finish line with it!!!

Love the show, want to be part of the street team for the book here in LA!!!! (Pasadena area)

QOTD: Don’t recall any Austrian wines, though it’s quite possible I’ve had a few–just don’t remember. 2 or 3 South African wines (pinotage)over 10 years ago. I haven’t purchased any since then and might have had something So. African at a tasting–but it didn’t leave that much of an impression.

So I was watching the NFL draft and look who appears like an angel in my television set, none other but Gary Vaynerchuck.
I turn to my wife and say,”Look honey, Gary V. is on tv.” She simply replies, “Thats nice dear.”

    No respect..

QOTD: I’ve had some of the Fairview wines (Goats do Roam, etc.) and liked them all right. We got a bunch of inexpensive South African wines once – one of them had a giraffe on it – we weren’t impressed. Haven’t tried much in the way of Austrian wines. But I will be thinking about them.

  104. April 28, 2008

    QOTD:
Funny this is one varietal I’ve actually had =)
Last summer when I was in the Czech Republic we drank a lot of “groovy”, but all the bottles were in Czech, so I have no idea what the wineries were. But I remember liking most of it. (And it being really cheap)
As for South African, I recently had a Zarafa 2007 SB, its in my corkd account.

GV, great ep to get us to expand our palates.

QOTD: I’ve had a port from South Africa that was pretty good, but not any still wines, red or white. thx ~ Max

  106. April 29, 2008

    Robert Howells

Chenin Blanc from South Africa. Beautiful and food friendly.

  107. April 29, 2008

    MonkuWino

QOTD: I’ve never had an Austrian wine but the best South African wine I’ve ever had was a chardonnay I purchased at Trader Joes. I can’t remember the name of the winery but I think it had “Gary” in it? Anyway, it was the best one I’ve had but then it was the only one I had, also. And truth to tell, it wasn’t all that good. It was pretty average. But the best one so far that I’ve tried!

  108. April 29, 2008

    Wes M

QOTD: I haven’t had either due to two factors: I am new to this wine things and haven’t had very many white wines yet, and the selection at my local store for South African and Austrian wines is slim.

Gary, I have never seen the NFL draft before nor have I wanted to do so until this year. I can honestly say I was watching becuase of you and the passion you display. Thanks a million.

  109. April 29, 2008

    Ryan W

    Gary,

How about those Chiefs? They absolutely killed it in the Draft on Saturday.

Great seeing you too, it got me pumped!

QOTD – Never had one, but I am expanding every wine I drink.

    Thanks,

  110. April 29, 2008

Keep bringing these amazing wines to light my friend!

QOTD: The 2005 Fairview Viognier from South Africa was really good from what I remember. It hid the 15% alc really well.

The Glatzer Carnuntum GV I had a few months ago … wonderful stuff for a nice price.

Q: is there any GV being grown in places other than Austria, and is it any good?

  112. April 29, 2008

    bundydb

QOTD: I don’t think I’ve ever had either one…. Working my way around to South Africa : ) I’ve always made it a habit of not drinking alcohol on any nights before I work (since I work in an ER and I always want to give my A game at work). And since I usually work at least 4 days a week or more, it just leaves me a few nights a week and I’m not the type to sit around my house alone trying different wines at $20 each. At least not yet anyway ; ) Thinking about trying to get my local wine shop to do some tastings. The way I look at it, it could even help them bring in business.

  113. April 29, 2008

    Phil G

QOTD – I have enjoyed a few wines from each of those places but can’t think of any that really jump out.

  114. April 29, 2008

Just had a fantastic GV along with a trockenbeerenauslese made from silvaner(!).
Both Austrian. Very impressive. Austria makes red wine too though, I would love to see a blaufränkisch (aka Lemberger) episode on the thunder show!

    Tommy Vernieri

I picked up a Gruner this weekend, haven’t tried it yet though. I just went to CellarTracker to see if I’ve had any others, turns out I bought the same one last year. Ha, didn’t even realize that! I had the 2004 Weingut Glatzer then, just bought the 2006. I don’t remember the flavors but it should be interesting to see how my notes compare.

I remember having a glass at a restaurant too, I think it was the 2006 Erich Salomon/Undhof Grüner Veltliner Hochterrassen. Massive explosion of lemons.

I’ve only had South African whites at tastings and haven’t found any that I like yet.

Gotta luv the SA Steen, but after NZ SBs started moving into the $15-25 range, I started frequenting the SA rack at my local shoppe. Don’t even know producers – you can grab any SA SB, and it will be

    HEY E!

to answer your question … i haven’t had any czech gruner, but i have had one frm germany that was quite nice, made in the same style as theri rieslings, wiht lower alcohol and more pronounced tropical fruit. there are also a couple people producing GV in Oregon, one grower is super proud of this fact, but i haven’t had his bottling, I have had Daedalus Cellars version though, and I wasn’t impressed. But give the vines some time and I bet it will improve.

  126. April 29, 2008

I heard that Palladius was good, glad to see it got you thinking. Eben Sadie has got to be the best winemaker in South Africa right now.
Growing up in South Africa and being in the wine industry I loved the Mulderbosch and Rustenberg wines [S.B and 5 soldiers] but the unique wine has to be Chenin Blanc made by Teddy Hall at Rudera. On the red side the Buitenverwachtin Christine is phenomenal as well the De Trafford reds.
good show and more S.A wines would be great, a little bit of home!

  127. April 29, 2008

QOTD: A whole slew of Gruner V’s at my brothers bachelor party I threw him at an Austrian restaurant…there were quite a few of them so I cant recall any specifics. We also drank some of the house “Heuriger” which was great!! Did I see you during the draft coverage wearing a white#52 jersey? I thought I did, but then I didnt see it on the clip montage. Great show!!

  128. April 29, 2008

  129. April 29, 2008

I don’t remember the producers or vintages, but I’ve had a couple of Gruner Veltliners that I have really enjoyed. In the $12-$20 range, those examples have excited me more than the S.A. whites I have tried. I think the Dr Unger Gruner is pretty widely available and I’ve liked the ones I’ve had.

  130. April 29, 2008

    Rossodio

Hey G, saw you on the draft, good face time, man! About the last wine on this show, the best bottle of white I’ve had is a Chatauneuf du Pape blanc. I’d really LOVE to get ahold of a bottle of this palladius.

On another note, I know suggestion day was last week, but I have a suggestion for you: you mention food pairings for wines in passing at times (i.e. the fried shrimp with the gruve on this episode)… it would be great it you threw one or two food pairings up for all the wines you try that you like. Would be great for those of us who put food and wine hand in hand.

QOTD: I’ve only had 5 bottles of S. African/Austrian whites… A Chenin Blanc and 2 Sauv Blancs from S. Africa, and 2 Gruner Veltliners from Austria. Really, the 2007 Sauvignon Republic Cellars Sauvignon Blanc was the best of the bunch — and I had it within the last month. That being said, in my mind it was a bit overdone on the acidity. Here’s my tasting note on it:

Loud citrus on the nose walks hand in hand with that characteristic South African mild smokiness with a hint of wet brown fall leaves. Bright acidity (perhaps a bit overly acid), almost effervescent on the palate, with citrus, passion fruits, a bit of fresh cut grass, a bit of mineraly taste, and a smoked fatty meat taste that you pick up from many Stellenbosch wines. The finish tapers off quickly but nicely, with a pleasant balance. Pretty solid, though not terribly complex. Does what it does very well. A good match for Thai food. 88 Points.

Hey Mott! Your Giants got a humongous STEAL in Andre Woodson from my Kentucky Wildcats. I can’t believe he lasted until the 6th round. You will be ecstatic to have him on your team.

    the unknown chef

Hey Gary, can you give a little more on why you want shrimp with that GV? I think the food and wine pairing thing can come off like some mysterious voodoo for a lot of folks. Maybe you could slip in some pairing principles so everyone can get the most from their wine (particularly those $50 ones).

2007 Cederberg Bukettraube. I think it was about $15. It took me 10 minutes to actually taste it because the nose was so seductive. I got so excited. Sort of like the Palladius was for you.

I just had a chenin blanc from south africa the other day. I loved it. Unfortunately I don’t remember the label. I don’t have to, it’s the only one they sell at my local liquor store. I bought it a long with a bunch of other whites looking to try some new stuff.

THANK YOU!!! It was a great birthday! I had sparkling malbec rose at dinner and some California Rhone-style deliciousness from Kunin on the Central Coast. All with oysters and ahi tuna and gazpacho at a South American restaurant — yum!

Thank you so much for the shout-out. :-) (And thanks Kristen!!)

QOTD: Hmm. I have had the South African Groote Post white blend and I wasn’t that impressed; must keep trying. I remember a SA red called “Wolftrap” that smells like a tire fire and tastes even worse. Blecch.

Nice show – I had an austrian riesling that kicked ass a couple months ago – A Terry Theise Selection, the Salomon Riesling Steinterrassem 2007. GV – You were on ESPN during the draft about a bazillion times. Crazy. I do have a bone to pick with you, though. You were in the “Devin Harris” chant big time. Then when Dustin Keller’s name was called, you immediately started cheering. Come on. As a Jets fan, you are obligated to boo the selection since it was not your 1st choice. You can switch to liking the pick soon after, but not immediately.

Jets fans at the draft have a tradition to follow. Don’t futz it up.

Hi Gary, I’ve been watching your show for a few weeks now on my Apple TV. I’m someone who is really NOT into getting hyped up about internet celebrity culture, and there isn’t much out there that interests me. I’ve gotten into Diggnation now, and my boyfriend and I watch it together, but that’s it. One day he showed me one of your episodes, and after initally thinking “this guy is full of it”, I became addicted. You are my favourite video podcaster (or whatever you want to call it), and I don’t even like wine. But you totally inspire me. I think the enthusiasm and technical expertise you bring to your audience is phenomenal. I really and truly appreciate your efforts, and I am a big fan. I think it’s a pretty big deal that you have fans of winelibrarytv that aren’t even wine drinkers. That says a lot about you.

I didn’t like being called a lurker, so there is your comment :) I’ll write more later, and I look forward to more episodes. This episode was totally awesome; I like seeing you review wines that you really enjoy.

QOTD: Best SA or Austrian white wine? I’ve never had a memorable SA white. I’ve drunk a lot of good — and no bad — Grüner Veltliner from Austria, but the best Austrian white was a Beerenauselese Riesling. This was back in the winter of 1984/85, just before a major adulteration scandal hit the Austrian wine industry. The occasion was an otherwise quite pleasant dinner at a now long-gone Austrian restaurant on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. The cost was in the $15 – $20 range for the glass. And it justified every penny of that! There was definitely no antifreeze in this wine. Nope, it was nothing more nor less than a natural collaboration of grapes & botrytis that had turned this into an unbelievably sweet, rich, complex elixir that lingered on the palate for an hour or more after the meal ended. Thanks for bringing this memory back for me!

GrüVe, instead: Nigl Veltliner Privat 2005 (94 points WA, if I´m not mistaken, was released for some 25 Dollars and was probably the best white I´ve ever had)

woo hoo The Palladius is available at my Canadian corner liquor store – going out right away and getting 2. I’ll let you know how us Canucks enjoyed the tasting (with you) later. btw how about CFL football? Will you make the trip up to a Canada for football and wine?

Hmmm…. I was on a Graham Beck kick just because of the QPR – it was pretty one dimensional but likable nonetheless. I’ve had a few Sauv Blancs from S.A. that were mighty enjoyable, and a few pinotages (red) as well.

QOTD: I’ve had some great value Gruners and, recently, the 2003 DeTrafford Cabernet Sauvignon.

QOTD – I had a couple of different Chards from SA – a Glen Carlou that was OK and another whose name esacapes me that was better than the other that I mentioned.

    A very good episode.

QOTD – the best white wine from S. Africa has been for me (so far) Southern Right 2006 Sauvignon Blanc. Very crisp, most enjoyable, one that I will buy again.

2003 Soloman Undhof gruner veltliner- best GV I’ve had to date.

Excellent show! We really liked the Simonsig Chenin Blanc. Haven’t had a whole lot of S.A. wines to compare it to though. I really want to get a Gruner and saw one on the wine list in San Antonio last week, but we got our typical Sav Blanc instead. Next time for sure! Try new things..try new things….

Ok GV. I am watch the epsd late, however conveniently enough, am tried my first South African white this evening.
Stormhoek, Sauvignon Blanc, western cape, 2006. It is my first, and therefore my fav. Particularly appreciate the mineral backend. I bought three different whites earlier this evening, and found this particular wine to out taste the rest.

Can’t say I’ve had a “Best” from either. I’ve had some good stuff for cheap from both, but nothing in the higher end.

Good show GV! I am way behind on eps, been out of town and very busy. Don’t worry will I will get caught up.

Q-Had Gobelsburger Gruner from Austria recently, my wife and I really liked it.

    Pardus

I have a GV sitting in my wine cabinet from the Dél-Pannónia region of Hungary. I haven’t tried it yet, but I have had a lot of Austrian GV and I really like this varietal. I didn’t really keep track of what I was drinking on my last trip to Austria because pretty much everything I had I liked (including the beer.)

Having lived in Southern Africa and drinking almost exclusively South African wine during that time it is hard to say with certainty which wine was my favorite. However, I have had two different vintages of Chocolate Block from Boekenhoutskloof and this wine I REALLY liked. Vergelegen, Klein Constantia and Groot Constantia as well as Eikendal are other favorite wine estates.

A very good white wine from South Africa I’ve ever drank? A Chardonnay from Constantia.

Loved this show. Thanks for doing some of these wines.

QOTD: I had a great Moreson Chardonnay from S.A. Also, any wine from Boekenhoutskloof that I have had has been great.

3 Grüners in the cabinet now and one going with pork loin and fruit tomorrow night. I would find the S. African wine very interesting from your description. Wish I had known about that and the Berhard Ott when I was in the store Friday. Now will have to get shipping.

Good stuff. The 1st and 3rd wines rocked it today. 2 of 3 is def a good day in the books. Call it an Ichrio slap single and a double off the wall into a triple. One RBI, two runs scored. A def. “W” in the win column. QOTD: None as of yet. Oh the walk of shame!!!

qotd: 2006 josef ehmoser gruner veltliner is the best and worst austrian wine i’ve had as it’s the only austrian wine I’ve had. I liked it enough that I want to explore other gruners, but not enough to buy more of that one. But unfortunately being in the middle of the country, as you pointed out, means its harder to find them locally.
