qotd: haven’t had a ton from either, and there’s a lot of Austrian wines out there that I wanna try but can’t find. So I gotta go with Gruner for Austria (big surprise) and chenin for South Africa (huge surprise).

qotd: warwick chardonnay from south africa. visited the winery and really liked most of the wines. that was surprising to me since so many wines from that area bring the funky funk.

Long Time no see, but it´s good to be back and see Gary´s still doing his thing.
I´ll have to say the best South African I´ve had was a Boschendal Chenin Blanc 2005.
GrüVe, instead: Nigl Veltliner Privat 2005 (94 points WA, if I´m not mistaken, was released for some 25 Dollars and was probably the best white I´ve ever had)

The only South African white I’ve had so far was Matua, which was a pretty great bottle for the money. I just so happen to have a couple SA whites coming my way next week, so I’ll get to expand my horizons a bit.

SA: I recently had some Vin de Constance. Very Good.

Aus: Last year I had a Gruner that was in a clear bottle with a lime-green punt (Don’t remember the name). Very good for $11

Hmmm…. I was on a Graham Beck kick just because of the QPR – it was pretty one dimensional but likable nonetheless. I’ve had a few Sauv Blancs from S.A. that were mighty enjoyable, and a few pinotages (red) as well.

    A very good episode.

QOTD – the best white wine from S. Africa has been for me (so far) Southern Right 2006 Sauvignon Blanc. Very crisp, most enjoyable, one that I will buy again.

Excellent show! We really liked the Simonsig Chenin Blanc. Haven’t had a whole lot of S.A. wines to compare it to though. I really want to get a Gruner and saw one on the wine list in San Antonio last week, but we got our typical Sav Blanc instead. Next time for sure! Try new things..try new things….

Ok GV. I am watch the epsd late, however conveniently enough, am tried my first South African white this evening.
Stormhoek, Sauvignon Blanc, western cape, 2006. It is my first, and therefore my fav. Particularly appreciate the mineral backend. I bought three different whites earlier this evening, and found this particular wine to out taste the rest.

  • Can’t say I’ve had a “Best” from either. I’ve had some good stuff for cheap from both, but nothing in the higher end.

  • Pardus

I have a GV sitting in my wine cabinet from the Dél-Pannónia region of Hungary. I haven’t tried it yet, but I have had a lot of Austrian GV and I really like this varietal. I didn’t really keep track of what I was drinking on my last trip to Austria because pretty much everything I had I liked (including the beer.)

Having lived in Southern Africa and drinking almost exclusively South African wine during that time it is hard to say with certainty which wine was my favorite. However, I have had two different vintages of Chocolate Block from Boekenhoutskloof and this wine I REALLY liked. Vergelegen, Klein Constantia and Groot Constantia as well as Eikendal are other favorite wine estates.

A very good white wine from South Africa I’ve ever drank? A Chardonnay from Constantia.

Loved this show. Thanks for doing some of these wines.

QOTD: I had a great Moreson Chardonnay from S.A. Also, any wine from Boekenhoutskloof that I have had has been great.

  • 3 Grüners in the cabinet now and one going with pork loin and fruit tomorrow night. I would find the S. African wine very interesting from your description. Wish I had known about that and the Berhard Ott when I was in the store Friday. Now will have to get shipping.

Good stuff. The 1st and 3rd wines rocked it today. 2 of 3 is def a good day in the books. Call it an Ichrio slap single and a double off the wall into a triple. One RBI, two runs scored. A def. “W” in the win column. QOTD: None as of yet. Oh the walk of shame!!!

qotd: 2006 josef ehmoser gruner veltliner is the best and worst austrian wine i’ve had as it’s the only austrian wine I’ve had. I liked it enough that I want to explore other gruners, but not enough to buy more of that one. But unfortunately being in the middle of the country, as you pointed out, means its harder to find them locally.
