QOTD: granola with slices of fresh banana thrown in (and/or chocolate chips when I feel like going crazy).

Tempranillo is a varietal I know very little about. I may have had maybe 3 so far, that’s it. You might remember I told you a couple of weeks ago I just acquired a bottle of Six Sigma’s Tempranillo – heard a lot of good things about it, and can’t wait to taste it (never had a California tempranillo). Otherwise, my sis (who lives in Spain) gave me a while back a bottle of 1999 C.V.N.E Rioja Imperial Reserva which I have yet to try. And in June I’m going to Barcelona. By then, I’m expecting to have tasted a lot of tempranillo wines by this summer…

QOTDs: a. My water comes out of a little spout on the outside of the fridge. It’s filtered. When I use a pitcher I like to add lemon.
    b. Oatmeal with blueberries. Guilty pleasure: grapenuts with skim milk and bananas, but I have to eat it standing up because my cat Cleo likes it too.

  68. April 30, 2008

Lovin’ the Tempranillo. Been drinking a very small production wine made with Texas grown Tempranillo, blended with Cab S, and a splash of Cab Franc. Nice drink for a Texas wine, though a bit overpriced as are many small local wines. Still I’m a sucker for people who love what they do, are passionate in their POV and just nice darn folks to hang around. Lee Fuqua qualifies on all counts.

?OD: Some granola, lots of fresh fruit and berries and some yogurt. If I’m feeling totally wacky perhaps some honey.

Gary: QOTD, eating Cheerios. I experiment with crazy cereals, but I always return to the base. Drinking red wine (usually California cab)and feeling like I am actually chewing an oak tree is an experience I’ve had: I don’t like it. Take care, keep up the good work.

Frosted mini-wheats. Serious on one side…you remember the commercial.

Crushed ants? I’ve had squashed lightning bugs or those tobacco-spewing grasshoppers but not crushed ants. Great analogy.

Good show, I like it when you “go back” to a wine. I do it all the time to make sure my taste buds weren’t deceiving me.

QOTD: Cap’n Crunch with Crunch Berries

  109. April 30, 2008

    Pastafari Pirate

I haven’t tried La Linda Tempranillo yet, but frankly I am NOT surprised at all. Over the past year, I have become a hu-you-you-YOUge fan of Argentina. I’m telling ya, these days, for the CKCers, or for the PAPKICCers like me (Paying Alimony Plus Two Kids In College Crowd), Argentina is WHERE IT’S AT. How many times do I have to mention Vina Antigua’s red (50% Bonarda, 50% Sangiovese), the BEST $5 wine you will ever find. I have 6 different friends who after trying it, asked me for a case of it – you should test it yourself.

QOTD: I always mix 2-4 different cereals together in a big Rubbermaid bulk container. Right now, I think my mix is a blend of Kellogg’s Smart Start, Post’s multigrain BlueBerry Morning, Post’s Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds, and Giant Store’s house (generic) brand of Granola. Cuz when it comes to cereal, I’m like a Bordeaux wine blender, trying to achieve the ultimate balance of all the different cereal varietals.

I’m very happy you came upon the La Linda–this is a wine my wife and I fell in love with in Argentina, where it was featured in one of the high end restaurants in the Palermo Chico section of Buenos Aires, Social Paraiso. While it’s not a ’showy’ wine, I feel it drinks like many solid Argentine reds and it seduces you in a quiet way. Since Luigi Bosca’s La Linda line has other kinds of reds-malbec, pinot noir, cabernet, I’d really be curious what you thought those were like and if you could review them as well.

FWI-if you want to sound like a true ‘porteno(Buenos Aires city dude), the double L in Argentina is pronounced like a soft g, “eegh”, as in Tempran–ee–sho.

    Fun show….

Hey Gary! I’m thrilled to see such good marks for the Tempranillo! It gives me validation for the handful of California Reds I’ve picked up in recent years, which I’ve just started trying out (they’ve each had VERY similar characteristics to what you found in this one).

No surprise on the La Linda. I am super impressed with the quality of what I’ve been drinking out of Argentina and Chile. South American wines are some of the best QPRs in the wine world right now.

Hmm, what cereal am I eating? That’s a pretty zooey QOTD, but the answer is that lately I’ve been radically into hot barley. I ran through like a pound of rolled barley earlier this month, which was so good, I ran out & bought a pound of unrolled hulled barley a day or two ago. I’ll have it with some skim milk, grade B maple syrup, maybe some slivered almonds, and maybe some slices of those teeny-tiny little bananas you see at the really cool vegetable stands these days. That probably wouldn’t go well with Tempranillo though. 8>)) Which reminds me that I haven’t been drinking many Spanish reds for the past couple of years; time to stock up on ‘em & refresh the old palate about their unique qualities.

I’m so stoked you made this episode. I had asked for a tempranillo episode several days ago and I’m not sure whether or not you saw the comment or I was making a good prediction. I think it’s a very underrated varietal and I’m glad you gave it some love and the central coast of cali is putting out some great immigrant varietals.

Yea man, sorry, been watching, yet lurking a bit. Currently eating Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch ONLY because they were on sale for $2.50 a box down from like 5-plus bucks. This is a once in a blue moon type thing. I grew up in a household where it was oatmeal or cheerios everyday. But you always had that friend who’s parents didn’t give a damn. You’d stay overnight and you’d be lovin’ it because you’d be watching Double Dare or Heathcliff on Nickelodeon while eating a bowl of Cookie Crisp followed by a bowl of Count Chocula or Dr. Frankenberry with the possibility of Oreos and milk for dessert. Naw mean? Anyway, i drank the shit outta Tempranillos when me and some Aussie friends roadtripped it thru Spain summer of ‘06. Get nostalgic when I drink it. You’re doing us all good doing what you’re doing. I heard you mention the possibility of doing a beer-tasting episode. Must say, you would be quite cool if you did a Oregon microbrew episode. As you know, Portland is at the forefront of the world’s beer brewing culture. I can recommend some very obscure yet amazing local beers. We’ll talk at your book signing. Cheers! Oh yea, my B-day is Cinco de Mayo. Turning 28!

QOtD – Kashi Oat flakes ‘n blueberry clusters… yum!

Smarties: are you reffering to the m&m-like candy coated milk chocolate sugarmonsters or the tangy tarty rolls?

Also, get some good, salty, fishy japanese green tea and let a generous amount steep in water in the fridge over night. Makes some of the most amazing iced tea. Get the right kind and it’ll end up almost sweet! I’m guessing the saltiness of Japanese green tea is what makes the flavor stand out so much, Chinese green teas never seem to pull it off well.

Finally, no, I have never crushed a handful of ants and smelled them before… I fear I may be too old to try this, but… Damn it all, FOR SCIENCE!

Yo. QOD: organic, locally produced granola (near Milwaukee). I forget the farm where it comes from, but it is so delicious. I eat it either with soy or rice milk – the fat from milk just kills how it feels in my mouth, and skim milk is blasphemous. Anyhow, tempranillo seems like a great varietal – looking into it.

If we’re talking California Tempranillo at a great QPR, you can’t beat Barnwood 2004 Untamed Tempranillo from the Santa Barbara area. It rolls in at around $18.

QOTD: Im a big cereal guy, but my mainstays since childhood have been Post Raisin Bran, Honey Nut Cheerios, and Frosted Mini Wheats. On top of that I throw some Cinnamon toast crunch. Oh, and tried a new one the other day, Nature Valley (the granola bar company) has an Oats and Honey cereal, pretty good stuff.

And as an aside, I wouldnt ever use the flavored syrups that are on the table at IHOP. I worked there in high school, and once a month we would empty the containers out into a bucket, strain out all the cigarette butts and chewing gum that people put in them, wash the containers and then refill them with the same, now “clean” syrup. That is some really bad stuff, and one of several reasons that IHOP is a no-go for me.

Through winter, it’s gotta be the porridge oats so right now I’m in an awkward transition phase, mainly substituting with toast. I can do the Special K with berries but it leaves me hungry. Maybe I should go the muesli route.

Kashi stuff, and spoon sized wheat. On a good day, my wife will make her oatmeal special, which includes a bit of plain yogert, fresh fruits, lightly sugared, all under a small amount of Silk. Yummy. I can’t wait to try the La Linda. Too good to be true? Drink Argentine wines by the buckets, (why not, considering the price point), but have only had one other Tempranillo.

Enjoyed the Tempranillo show. I’m going to have to look out for a straight Tempranillo next time I’m wine shopping. The Red Guitar Tempranillo/Garnacha blend went over well at our house and a good buy at the WL price of US$9 (it was CDN$13 here in Ontario).

SQOTD: we just do plain water at home, but our dentist’s office has 2 infused waters as a coffee alternative in the lobby. Various citrus, raspberries, strawberries, or cucumber have all been tasty.

QOTD: breakfast for me is either oatmeal (with any of maple syrup, raisins, coconut, cream, buttermilk, brown sugar on top) or homemade granola (topped with milk or yoghurt). The good thing about oatmeal is that I can make up a plate of bacon to go with, and not feel guilty about it — Lucky Charms with a side of bacon would just be weird. Lately I’ve done a sort of muesli with dry rolled oats, shredded apple, raisins, cinnamon, and kefir left overnight in the fridge, then add a bit of milk in the morning to get a nice consistency. Earlier this week it was rice pudding with cinnamon and fresh mango.

QOTD: Cereal, eh? I just Twittered about that the other day! I literally spent 20 minutes in the grocery store going up and down the cereal aisle trying to decide what cereal I wanted. I had at first had the intention of getting either Lucky Charms or Fruity Pebbles, and the Fruity Pebbles even made it into my cart at one point, but then I changed my mind and got some Kellogg’s Raisin Bran. Two scoops of raisins, man! Can’t go wrong with that! (I also was really craving some Corn Chex, but that will have to wait til next time, I guess)

Rotation between multigrain cheerios, honey nut cheerios, and fruit cheerios (like fruit loops). I eat a lot of raison bran crunch, but haven’t had it in a few months and this thread may have inspired that to be my next selection. Frosted mini-wheats and life often make my rotation…just not lately.

great episode. i had my first tempranillo a couple of weeks ago and it was decent. it at least made me curious about the better ones out there! periodically some lemon and mint get tossed in my water. very refreshing.

i make my own granola. it’s easy, cheaper than buying cereal from the store, and i can throw whatever i’m feeling in the mood for into the mix. a few weeks ago it was an orange cranberry granola with cashews. last week it was blueberry vanilla almond granola. good stuff.

I’m iPodding episodes these days, so I’m always behind the times. Have you been able to clean up that wine stain that you’ve been complaining about in your carpet??? If not, try this… I SWEAR you will be shocked:

Windex. Clean it with windex and paper towels. I would bet money that you will not even be able to tell where the stain was. I’ve spilled red wine on two different carpets and Windex got the stains out completely… one stain had set several days, too. So give it a go, and if it works… Just give me a shout-out!

I’m looking forward to seeing this Tempranillo episode… Cheers!

QOTD: a local granola maker (Erin Baker’s) has a wonderful peanut butter granola. My current favorite breakfast is to put some blueberries and non-fat plain yogurt in a bowl. Top it with some of the peanut butter granola. It’s a bit like a PB&J. :)

BTW, I do have one of those pitchers of water in my frig. Most of the time there are a few slices of lemon or lime. Orange chunks or slices are quite nice, too. Have you ever tried putting a few thin slices of cucumber in the pitcher? A local restaurant does that, and it’s very refreshing — it’s a fun change up from the citrus.

QOTD: GV, thanks for asking what cereal I’m eating. Actually, I’ve been on the wagon, lately. On a protein kick, eschewing carbs a bit. Otherwise, I like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and I try and eat them quickly before they get too soggy. Very few people remember Clackers from the 60s…graham cracker cereal. When the oak monster in the Pago started chasing you, I immediately recalled Booberry; KaBoom came to mind, also. What wine program is complete without Grape Nuts? And for the La Linda that you liked, Kix seems aprops. Thanks for the trip down Tempranillo highway.

    Dear Gary . . .

    branflakes.

Hard to believe the spanish still over oak, I would have thought they
would have figured it out by now. That said, when they ease off on it they can produce some great wines as you know. As for tempranillo, not my favourite.

My QOTD – why do americans alway talk about wine in terms of grape vatietal?

Although white burgs are made with the chardonnay grape, you’d never call them chardonnays. They have nothing to do with chardonnay grown elsewhere.
Perhaps when comparing wines from different regions you might think about
wines that have similar characteristics – NZ whites vs chablis etc.

A very professional show as always Gary. Keep up the good work. I’ll see
if I can get my hands on some of the Cornas and Chassagne you tried earlier.

    All the best,

    Paul C.

Another great 10 shows (I don’t post often enough). Tempranillo is a great wine type. I’m drinking one now! how about that?
La Linda is sold out already? wow. what a following you have!
I love oak – got to try that Florentino! ah, you gave it 55 and it is not sold out. I see i have to watch these when they post to get the wines!!! smile.

SQOD – no, I drink my water straight. Water is to hydrate, wine is to taste. :*)
QOTD – cereal – ? Cherrios. I keep things simple in the morning, so I can have complex wines in the evening. Such a simple question. duh? smile. haha.

Loving the Tempranillo show, and great find at $8. How about more Spanish Tinta? A whole show on different Spanish Tempranillo would be way cool, or maybe a show with 4-5 up-and-coming Priorats? Would be really helpful.

    Neil

QOTD: I don’t eat cereal these days. Too much on the sugar and carbs. But when I get the desire every blue moon or so, it’s either Raisin Bran or Frosted Flakes.

Wow! I’ve been wanting to know what the most over-oaked wine is that you’ve ever tasted and this show answered my question. I HATE over-oaked wine! You can literally picture the inside of a wine barrel and how it would smell and taste when you experience these kinds of wines.

As for always trying new things, I tried a wonderful Greco di Tufo this week which is a great alternative to Chardonnay. It only had the faintest hint of rubber on the nose but I didn’t mind it. Such a nice wine!

Also, I tried a tasty Macedonian wine made of a grape called vranec. The Macedonian wine had a very spicy nose with some nice ripe red and dark fruit scents with an underlying farmesque earthiness to it. On the palate, the vranec was nice and tart and sort of tickled the tip of the tongue with a faint fizz and it finished with firm tannins and sour cherry. Wow!

Thanks for always stressing that we should try new things! You are the best! Keep it up!

QOTD: I like it all! Like to move from sugary stuff like Fruity Pebbles to the simple yet healthy picks like Grapenuts.

A better question perhaps is this: Do you use milk for your cereal, or do you prefer the new and trendy soy milk substitues? (My answer – I tried the soy, but it’s too viscous and sweet – have to go traditional and pour on the cow juice.)

Gary I watched this video when you posted it and I thought “No way the Pago can be the harsh.” So, I took one off the shelve the give it a taste. OMG It was more massively oaked than I could ever fathom. If the walking tree people from Lord of the Rings bled…..It would taste like this. I did catch a little maraschino cherry action on the first taste. Two hours later all the fruit was gone and the wood was even more intense.

Thank you for allowing me to experience this wonderfully horrific experience. I need a bowl of Honey Nut Cheereos to get this forest out of my mouth.

    Gary,
After seeing your review of the La Linda i walked into a tasting at my local wine shop and they were sampling it. I tried it for myself and agreed with you 100% great wine for the price.
    Thanks for the help.

Based on your review, I ordered 4 bottles from winelibrary (show some support yo!) and at the office I gave 3 bottles away to my office-mates (I was ALMOST thinking of keeping winelibrary and Gary’s reviews all to my self, but decided to share : )

Their homework this week is to come back with tasting notes.

I opened my bottle this evening over dinner. My wife is a personal chef and made her coffee and cocoa dry rubbed churasco steak. This wine was a very nice paring with dinner. Gary you are on the money – sweet berries on the nose and powerful with a hint of acidity on the back end. Very enjoyable – even more when I think I paid $8 for it.

This might have become my new every day wine. I think I’ll order a case now : )

Fiber one. Not for a particular reason, but we have it lying around and it makes a good snack.

    Good show GV!

Q-I don’t eat cereal very often, too many carbs, but I love it. Some favorites are Crispix, Raisin Bran, Frosted Flakes and Cheerios.

Post Raisin Bran. BTW, great site! I saw you for the first time today on “Mad Money”, and you’re as helpful in the Wine arena as Cramer is in the Stock Market. Now I’m a big fan of you both!

Hi, Gary. I’m a bit behind in watching, but I hope to catch up.

QOTD. I don’t eat much cereal, but when I do, I like to mix a few together.

Good show – big Tempranillo fan. Yes, it has many a different name.
I eat Grape Nuts with Raisins.

QOTD: I agree, that is a very important question. I’m eating Kellog’s All-Bran, either the Wheat Flakes or Yogurt Bites depending on what I picked up at the grocery store that week. I like that grainy flavor, much better than cereal with nuts or wimpy flakes.

Also… TOTALY going to check out the oaked wine… I am trying to get a nose and mouth feel for oak, so this would obviously be a wine to train that into my palate. I know you don’t like it but thanks for trying it to at least let us know… This is oak. :)

    Hola Gary

I saw your show and felt very happy that you liked La Linda Tepranillo becasuse I happen to live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Glad you liked it!
    Excellent show!

Lurker, coming out to say a few things.

First, just tried my first tempranillo (well, mostly tempranillo, it was blended with some syrah) today and I love the grape. Yay Portugal!

Second, granola with a bit of yogurt in it. Lovely start to your day.

Third, I love your show, and I never thought I’d be a wine drinker. Slowly but surely you’ll to me into one. Thank you.

Hi Gary. I finally decided to step out of the shadows of lurkerdom.
I’m still under 21, so I can’t get my hands on much vino. However, with your guidance I’ve been working on expanding my palette by eating tobacco and dirt and all of that good stuff :)

Tempranillo is my parents favorite varietal, so I’ll definitely clue them in on the thunderous value of La Linda. Thanks for the tip!

QOTD: Kashi Autumn Wheat. Best shredded wheat cereal on the face of this earth.

Gary-big fan of your show but I have to disagree with you on the Pago Florentino. Oaky yes, but I think I think it brings a minerality that you don’t often get with a lot of tempranillo. And a score of 55? I’ve tasted the 2004 and 2005 (noticeably more fruit than the 2004) Pago with several people and have yet to encounter one person who didn’t really enjoy the wine. If you ever do another tempranillo show again check out Six Sigma Ranch from Lake County, CA.

Im down with you on the Smarties. I totally ground those suckers up when I was a young’n. Down with Piper, too. Still is and always will be my favorite wrestler ever. Its not even close. His attitude alone did it for me. I mean who can forget him spraying Morton Downey, Jr at WM6? Even long after his main wrestling carear was over he still brought the thunder every time he made an apperance. Love the guy and best wishes to him in getting over his health issues. Throwing out a 55? Yikes. Dont throw out too many of those…. I think I remember one time you going off on a hillarious rant about a wine being beyond awful and throwing out a 48 or 49. Still, I feel sorry for the wineries because is what they do, But if the wine is crap, its crap. Call it like you see it. QOTD: Im throwing down with some Lucky Charms. Its the marshmellows. Cant help it. And the cheap knockoff brand doesnt do it justice.
