WINE kegs?!?!? THIS, I have to see.

  15. May 1, 2008

    The Lukas

    AMAZING!!
I have so many friends i’ve been trying to get into wine.
If i showed up to a party with a wine keg, people would definitely drink it.

Yes to spitting on the ground.

Loved the guest, he was pretty awesome.

    QOTD: ha, no idea, 10,000

  16. May 1, 2008

    Karl Laczko

Interesting, wine kegs? Not sure I’m convinced.

QOTD – No google (where would you start anyway?). 150,000.

  17. May 1, 2008

    BargePlus

    QOTD: 0, i.e. zero?

My QOTD: So where can you get these kegs retail? I keep following the links and winding up at distributors who want to sell them to retailers, but nothing directly to consumers. So how am I going for that party play?

HA! Wine Kegs?! What won’t they think up next. thx for showin us where its at GV.

    QOTD: 476,000

  21. May 1, 2008

    Neil

QOTD: 500,000 20-litre kegs/yr. Far more than I would have imagined. CKC heaven.

  22. May 1, 2008

    Mike

    QOTD: 50,000?

Very cool idea as a house wine for a restaurant.

  23. May 1, 2008

    Robin C

    Cool concept for casual gatherings.
QOTD: without looking it up Id say 5.

  24. May 1, 2008

    KVolk

QOTD: I guess, without googling, it’s 723,469 per year.

Outside is a cool way to do it and we don’t have to see the silly Jets bucket. By the way what happened to the audio after Gary’s sign off.

  25. May 1, 2008

    jpwardaia

    Very interesting idea.
    QOFT: 500,000…at least!!!!

Great show, I cheated so I won’t say the number, but keep going higher everyone.

  27. May 1, 2008

    Eli2Tyree

I dont know I would guess about a half million…I would also guees most of that market is controled by shaffer kegs… just a guess…honest

  28. May 1, 2008

    KVolk

I forgot to say what a great idea this is for restaurants and wine bars….100 taps all sold by the glass what a great way to expand the palate…the first place to do this right is going to kill.

  29. May 1, 2008

    Derek F.

Very interesting, I have to say…not to interested in this product.

  30. May 1, 2008

    Melissa J UC Davis

Oh my god, I WILL have these at my wedding!

  31. May 1, 2008

    JD

    QOTD: One million!?!

Love the concept of the wine kegs… like you said though, the quality needs to get better.

  32. May 1, 2008

    JudeMurphy

I love this idea! And I think it will work in homes too, because it’s a great way of just having a glass a day (good for the heart!) without going through bottles.

QOTD- Italy’s population is about 60 million, so I’m guessing… ’bout 60 million!
Or, realistically… probably not many. Could be just like 1000. Or I could be wrong… maybe 10,000?

Gary! More Barolo! ; ) I wanna hear more about Barolo!

And I want you to get yer arse up to Dublin and show all the Guinness swiggin’ eejits what drinking’s really about! ; )

    Top 25…Woo Hoo!

  34. May 1, 2008

    GrapeStuff

Great opening song and great ep! That really is changing the wine world. And I think you nailed one of the marketing angles GV, environmentally friendly packaging all the way!!

    QOTD: 1 million

  35. May 1, 2008

    Jay

The idea’s fine and all, but do it without the salesperson alongside. He REALLY took away from the whole thing. After watching you taste so many wines, I think viewers have a pretty good idea of how you react to wines you don’t like… these were in that ballpark.

  36. May 1, 2008

    Genghis Philip

QOTD: 1719 kegs, because the show seems like the end was randomly padded to get to 17:19.

  37. May 1, 2008

    Becky Graves

I think those would be SERIOUSLY good business for restaurants, especially with being able to turn in the kegs for re-use. Very cool technology, and a nice guy to boot.

    QOTD: I’d say about 800,000 kegs/year. Total guess. :)

  38. May 1, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

I would really love to see local wineries have this product available for parties!

What’s with the hating in the comments? Really enjoyed the show, regardless of the wine in the thing, its interesting to see another option out there. It’d be a great draw at a bar or restaurant for a house wine, especially if the price point came down a little–but new ideas are always a little more expensive at first.

Don’t kill on the sales guy.. and I’m going to pass on the QOTD because I read enough comments to know the answer ..

  40. May 1, 2008

    C-Fiddy

    Great Show,
QOTD: I’m gonna guess, ummmmm, 3.5 million!

Speaking of interesting packaging concepts, A friend sent me this link on a label that tears off easily and a single taste size wine container…

    GV, check them out!

    QOTD: Half a million

Cool concept, if I ever open a bar, that would be something that would make sense to me.

  45. May 1, 2008

    Roberto

wow… really a great idea… I can see wine bars with 10 or 15 of those behind the counter and good wine being served like that… and by the way, Gary you must admit that wine is probably better than the house wine at 80% of chain restaurants today… I mean have you tried the House Chianti anywhere in the US? awful stuff…

QOTD: I lived in Italy and frankly, never saw one, ever. Not one. So I’m gonna guess about 500…

  46. May 1, 2008

    Val

QOTD: 0. No doubt about it!

Nice concept, but I think drinking same wine for 60 days is torture.

  47. May 1, 2008

    Little Jonny H

Why would restaurants use anything else for their wines by the glass? The product is cheaper b/c the packaging gets reused, and the wines stay fresh for months. I see a revolution happening if you could get a big ‘respectable’ value driven wine producer (cartlidge and browne for example) and pump out some highly respectable juice for around $4 a glass!

QOTD: It’s either 0 or about 5 million

  48. May 1, 2008

    SugaredViolets

Please give credit to the songwriter/singer! She is awesome.

  49. May 1, 2008

    Garrick

Great show, what an awesome idea!

But what was up with the long, boring outro?

  50. May 1, 2008

    BobbyTiger

I will probably have no use for the keg of wine, as, 1} while I drink like a fish, I can’t possibly consume that much, and, 2] I don’t have any friends to help me drink it. Having said that……….cool concept. Wish I had such a thing when I was in college, then I wouldn’t have to go to the liquor store but once a week. Gary………(I say Gary)……………Is it always that L O U D in front of your store. Geeze… QOTD……..A whole lot!

  51. May 1, 2008

    Plminer

    Wine kegs??? Wow. It’s happening.
    QOTD: 300,000

  52. May 1, 2008

    Alex Hopgood

i guess about 800,000 per year

  53. May 1, 2008

    Alex Hopgood

oh forgot to add. Loved to intro, but the outro was rather teadious, u should have the outro back to what it was.

  54. May 1, 2008

    Deano

Wow this is awesome i need one of these and i can put it next to my kegerator. This is a great idea i freaking love it.

    QOTD:
    -250,000

  55. May 1, 2008

    Bernie

KEGGER! Brilliant idea; as kinks are worked out, I’d be happy to volunteer for the beta testing!

    QOTD: 250,000.

  56. May 1, 2008

    Susan

Gary- This is such a SUPER idea on so many levels. Lighter, easier to store, better for the environment and less expensive. This is good for many people. Great new way to get better wine to everyone!!! :)

  57. May 1, 2008

    Taylor

loving the new technology, wish i could have gotten one for a party this weekend.
    QOTD 650,000+

  58. May 1, 2008

    Antony

    1.2 million

  59. May 1, 2008

    Susan

Gary-QOTD: Annual wine keg consumption in Italy: 1.2 million.
    :)

  60. May 1, 2008

    terroirist

Wow. It would be nice if there was …hmm.. say a Cote du Rhone (E. Guigal) in the keg (Something not too nice and not to cheap.. in the middle..).. I would drinkey drinkey it. Great for a party.. Yes – I agree the outro was too long..

Regarding the question.. I wouldn’t guess Italy would have many wine kegs, but by the guests obvious thinking ahead for the QOTD – I’d say probably 5,000? Donno..

    aka Mike in Nebraska.

  61. May 1, 2008

    John Farrin

QOTD: Probably more than 5,000,000. It is interesting that restaurants haven’t gotten on board with this for their whole wine by the glass menus.

  62. May 1, 2008

    Shadowbird

QOTD: Rough estimate, somewhere between 0 and a whole freakin’ lot.

  63. May 1, 2008

    Kev and Ams

QOTD: Probably about a million. I was there for a week and a half and I drank about a keg’s worth myself.

  64. May 1, 2008

    Alex Linebrink

    Wow — too cool.

    QOTD::: 17,000?

  65. May 1, 2008

    Sharon

Nice product for parties and restaurants! Definitely.
BTW, Facebook says GV already has too many friends.
Gary, did you bring Twitter down with your love again?
    QOTD: 3593.5

    Wow! Top 100 – stratospheric for a left-coaster…

  67. May 1, 2008

Cool intro song!! Loved it, you should have different artists doing their own versions. If you haven’t planned it already. Cool keg concept.

  68. May 1, 2008

BLOCK PARTY!!! Seriously. I want this at my block party this year.
    QOTD: 4,500

  69. May 1, 2008

    Kittylitter

What a truly great idea. Wish those things had been around during my school party days. I would have never gotten to classes. Thanks so much for having those on the show.

The other thing. I had never seen the outside of the “Library” before. Just one very beautiful edifice!!

  70. May 1, 2008

    Christian

Great Show! Definitely makes sense for restaurants!

  71. May 1, 2008

    dAve

love that theme song! She sounds hot! smile. haha.
Spitting on the street – hahaha. Loved it. Can’t wait for my next cul-de-sac party to do THAT!
Wine Kegs! Who would have thought! Since I save my bottles and MAKE wine to bottle in them – not sure this is ME. But for a party! wow.
We got the secret packs – ready for next week! neighbors coming over, should be fun.
QOTD – kegs in italy – 40,000. Was I right?

  72. May 1, 2008

    J-Pipes

QOTD: I have no idea, but I’m guessing not enough. :)
I loved this episode, and I think it is a huge leap in wine tech that EVERY restaurant worth it’s salt should employ. GREAT SHOW!

  73. May 1, 2008

    Dale Cruse

    Please give singer credit.

GV said “play” at least nine times during this episode!

Those kegs look PERFECT for tailgating!

  74. May 1, 2008

    RANDI

WOW! That was way cool Gary!
    Andy’s awesome too….
I have a bunch of questions about the wine keg..will email separately…
    Great show!

    QOTD one mil

  76. May 1, 2008

    RANDI

    btw..youre both GREAT SPITTERS!
    :)

  77. May 1, 2008

    Anthony L.

Very interesting. A great idea for everyday wine drinkers like myself. However, I wouldn’t want to see classic wines in kegs, it would just kill the romance.

  78. May 1, 2008

    ChrisH

I agree that this is a phenomenal idea! So many restaurants / bars buy the cheaper wines simply because they are inexpensive to get in bulk. If wineries could price their wines a little less by putting them in these kegs, I think we would see more and more restaurants selling better wines for the same price as what we are paying for the cheap stuff… or they may end up just charging more and pocketing the profits ;-) Either way, it would end up either better for the consumer or better for the restaurant – or both! Definitely a very interesting product.

QOTD: I have no idea. I’m gonna say 340,000 just to toss a number out there.

  79. May 1, 2008

    ozzybeef

This will be Gary’s favorite tote along for his Twitter parties.

  80. May 1, 2008

    alco holland

Love the episode G. It always seems windy whenever you tape outside. Love the Sasha cameo. What many things need is more cowbell but WLTV could always use more SV,oh, and beer episodes.

  81. May 1, 2008

    Chris in Tulsa

This is such a great idea for restaurants! I usually always order wine by the glass when I eat out and this new technology would greatly increase the quality of wines by the glass. I would never use it at home tho, love the opening of a bottle and like to vary the wines too much to drink just one for weeks!
QOTD: I will say 50,000. Just a guess.

  82. May 1, 2008

    Clemclone

    Love the theme song!!

It would have to be for parties and wine bars. I don’t think I could drink that much of the same wine. I’d go nuts.

I’d like to see how the red held up after 6 months.

  83. May 1, 2008

    LB in KS

12k qotd………… that is one catchy little opening tune

  84. May 1, 2008

    Tommy Vernieri

That’s pretty cool. You guys go through 15 bottles of the same wine at a party? You’ve got to bring more variety than that.

  85. May 1, 2008

    Zinny

Great show as always. I am all about aternative packaging for wines and especially for getting better quality wine put into alternative packages. I have a question, tho – why is the nitrogen keg better than bag in box? Bag in Box seems like the ultimate eco friendly as well as good for wine as well as very inexpensive type packaging – or am I missing something? I could see kegs of sparkling wine, though -that would completely rad. Maybe you could do a show sometime to enlighten us on the pros and cons of alternative package types . . . maybe using wines from Europe or in the future maybe there will be some interesting wines available in alt packages here in the US.

    QOTD – no idea. A lot I bet. I’ll guess 50,000.

  86. May 1, 2008

    Mister Marcus

QOTD: 110,000. Because anything less would be uncivilized, and anything more would be excessive.

Great show. How you could keep your focus in a New Joisey tornado is beyond me.

  87. May 1, 2008

    Wes M

Great show. I would be excited to to hear some Chateau Y’quem is in kegs (or other such craziness). Thank You for the awesome, outdoor episode.

  88. May 1, 2008

    bh

wow, i’d definitely keep something like this flowing at my house if the juice was right and the price was right. for everyday drinking… a glass with dinner, etc. seems like a great solution. best of luck with it… i’m really interested to see where something like this can go.

  89. May 1, 2008

    JoeShmo

that really innovative, and with the way the people are trying to be more eco friendly i think (as far as the new world individuals go) this may have a good chance. old world people, your gonna have a bit more trouble convincing them that this “may” be the future. you never know. a really cool concept tho, and innovative like i said.

  90. May 1, 2008

    Kristen

Wine kegs- really interesting. What a CKC dream! :) This would be really cool in a bar/restaurant…it’d definitely beat putting argon gas into each and every opened wine bottle!

QOTD: I’d say in excess of one million. Europeans like to drink!

PS- Intro was good, nice to hear the song again, but the end was far too long. I like the graphic, but I think it needs to be a bit quicker imho.

  91. May 1, 2008

    Soyhead

I find it amusing to watch you pan wines when the winemaker/salesperson is standing next to you. He took it with grace. It has been said by others before, I think its better to not evaluate wines directly infront of anyone who has a vested interested in them.

  92. May 1, 2008

    Jon

Gary, I gotta say that I was proud of you for being willing to dis a wine despite having the guest. That’s a tough situation, but you found a (legitimate) way to praise the guy without pretending the wine was perfect. With that said, this keg is a really great idea, and I agree that it would be a big plus for restaurants selling a lot of wine by the glass.

QOTD: I have absolutely no idea.

  93. May 1, 2008

    Marc - Irvine

It’s a cool concept for partying and restaurants. But for home I’d rather do the ritual of opening a bottle, cutting the metal cover, pulling the cork, pouring a glass…
QOTD: No idea how many kegs are sold… not too many I guess

  94. May 1, 2008

We live in San Francisco and have enjoyed MAS wine by the glass in several restaurants locally. It’s consistently good, well priced, and in a very cool package. SF prides itself on being cutting edge and green, and MAS wine fits the bill in both cases.

  97. May 2, 2008

    Mason

Cool idea…I’m like you, though GV, I would like to see a little bit better quality wines going in. OR… have a wine keg that will allow you to add whatever wine you want to it.

    QOTD: 3000

  98. May 2, 2008

    Roger

I got to get me some of that!

  99. May 2, 2008

    J Crazy

awesome!! I saw a bit about Mas in Wines and Vines a few months back and thought the idea was brilliant especially for sports bars where, if the keg is displayed, they novelty would definitely help sell it. I’m glad GV asked them to push the quality, too. Let’s get some big time ballers together throw some Romanee Conti in there are have a tailgate royal style.

    QOTD: No f’in clue.

  100. May 2, 2008

    KW

Interesting show – interesting keg concept. I just want the keg!

  101. May 2, 2008

    David Cole

I like seeing new stuff (to me) like this. This is “strong” for a party, I may use one for July 4th!

    QOTD: 1 million

    DC is out!

  102. May 2, 2008

    james

dude, move over. let the man in the camera. its ok. he’s just CROWDING the plate on that camera action. holy camera horror. easy buddy. settle down and back up, maybe step aside a little.

other than that. LOVE the enthusiasm. awesome.

  103. May 2, 2008

    foulmouthpoet

definitely gonna rock one of these. gotta try it out. too new and ridiculous for me not to. plus, for a party, it seems to be, as the kids say, “the move.”
    qotd: 100,000?

  104. May 2, 2008

    Top 100 again!

    barely squeaked by this time.

  105. May 2, 2008

    Phil G

qotd – no idea, but i like the keg concept. also, good job with all the spitting…

  106. May 2, 2008

    RickD

great show. Like you said GV, THIS guy IS changing the wine world. thanks for bringing this to the group. I could see my Dad going for a keg ‘o the red, but he’d rather have the 2 buck chuck Shiraz version for $30 bucks. Make mine a good old vine Zin and you’ve got a customer.

  107. May 2, 2008

    Oregon Jim

    Kegs! Italy – 150K

Didn’t look it up. I thought the screw cap was a shocking development! Man this is totally nuts. Belly wash wine for 10 bones shows you the cost of doing the Keg though. It is an expensive investment to buy those things and you aren’t going to wait 30 years for your payback!

The 12.99 for the bottles is a red herring if I ever saw it. They don’t want to sell bottles. I wish Gary had tasted the bottle wine too.

  108. May 2, 2008

    T. Bone

Gotta think outside the bottle – different formats, that’s the future of wine. Cool stuff.

  109. May 2, 2008

    vibemore

    My QOTD would be…
are serious wine producers seriously going to go this route?
Obviously that has been the case with the screw caps. We’ll see.
Thanks for pushing the envelope yet again.

  110. May 2, 2008

    Chrisfs

This sounds like a great idea for a restaurant.

New opening logo. I like the graphic, but the shrinking effect is a bit odd. Keep the logo, but start with the whole logo on screen.

  111. May 2, 2008

    Andrew D

    Hey

    Hey Gary,

I always enjoy your shows and I am generally a lurker, but none the less, I think the shows are great. I wanted to invite you to Lexington Kentucky next week for the Kentucky Wine and Vine festival. It is the largest annual festival in Kentucky, and my company is also one of the corporate sponsors. You have many fans and I am certain you would be warmly welcomed. If you are interested, I will gladly send all the information for the three day event.

I think that restaurants should jump all over this keg technology if they are intent to continue serving wine by the glass. For an average consumer, this is an investment for more than just one person.

Attention CKC’s: get your roomates to pool some money together and hit this.

I can’t seem to justify in my mind any wine collector or consumer buying this just for the sake of having it in their collection.

  118. May 2, 2008

    Len

Amazing that restaurants haven’t picked this up especially by the glass…makes sense….good show! Not sure if I would ever use one outside of a party.

QOTD: No idea….it’s obviously new concept for wine…200,000 — 400,000.

This is a very cool thing… I have friends opening up a restaurant next year, They would certainly be interested, especially if this is made available in the area. And as a wine consultant, I would certainly want my customers to have this too…
100% reusable… this is so great! Throw in some high quality, single vineyard stuff… and WOW!

    Sign me up!!

QoD… wine kegs in Italy. hmmm probably about a 500k per yr. I dunno… just guessing.

Great technology. Restaurants should jump on the bandwagon. I think Daryl’s Wine Bar in New Brunswick, NJ might be using this or something similar–not completely certain. Loved Sasha’s cameo appearance.

and i didn’t even comment on the restaurant aspect earlier!

this might not fit the bill for places with big lists, or places that already have nitrogen systems in place because they like to have a good selection of wines by the glass.

but man, like 95% of restaurants in that $10-15 entree price point need to get on board with something like this. this would completely solve the problem of having to drink five day old chianti dregs, while at the same time saving the restaurant the expense of installing a whole nitrogen system.

really great technology… hope it takes off.

I think this is a really cool idea for restaurants. It is way more compact and on less expensive wines (ones you don’t pay a premium just for the producer) the bottle cost being cut out can be a big deal. I think this is something a lot of restaurants will move towards. The preserving technology in general is amazing. It would be great to be able to get classic glasses of certain wines because the restaurant isn’t afraid to open a bottle that no one else will drink in the next day or so.

Great show Gary! Thank you for expanding our knowledge of not just wine, but the wine world in general.

QQTD: 20K worth of wine kegs in Italy a year is my guess.

  136. May 2, 2008

    the unknown chef

I am one of those annoying restaurant customers who ask when the bottle was opened when I want something by the glass. But how much more annoying is it when you get a glass of something that has been sitting around too long? I like the keg!

Incredible idea put into practical production.

This is just from one wine producer in Italy … “Montelvini sold half a million 20-liter reusable kegs of wine last year, and even with expanded facilities, is hard-pressed to keep up with demand” and it only costs 50 Euros which is pretty kool.

Gary is right .. this is a really kool idea.

  140. May 2, 2008

From the descriptions of the wine during tasting, it sounds like Andy hit exactly the per glass price point he’s targeting for restaurants. The keg technology to sustain the quality level of the wine over time is great. Love the environmentally friendly benefits!

We have a MAS Vino keg on our counter at home here in California–the wine is great, goes well with many types of dinners, and it’s a awesome for entertaining a group! Many friends have enjoyed a glass of vino from the keg!

The environmental edge on this product is terrific–it’s nice to see any company out there making an effort to reduce energy and packaging materials going into production…not to mention actually reusing the packaging itself! Mas is awesome!

  149. May 2, 2008

    Bobby Bo

Thats a kick ass keg. I have to wonder if the Nitrogen tank is running it up on cost. Eather way, I drink enough wine to get one, if only I could pick/make a house wine to store in it.

You need to link up the company that handles those kegs, they would be great for home wine/beer makers.

Interesting concept, kegs of wine. As an individual, I would get bored with that much of one wine for personal drinking…now a party or something it would work.

    QOTD: No idea.

  153. May 2, 2008

    JTS_Brown

i love the concept. Agreed that the long window of drinkability is perfectly suited for neighborhood bars and any restaurant. It is so frustrating when I go to a local bar with friends and their wine by the glass is Fetzer (at $7 a glass at that!!!)

I would probably not buy it for my personal consumption in the home b/c I like to change things up a bit but would consider it for a party. We have downed 15 bottles at our poker parties in the past and a wine keg would be an interesting conversation piece as well.

Thanks for the education, GV! Awesome job as always.

Wine kegs and the keg mentality represent everything the wine drinking experience should elevate us from, the mass market commodity mindset in which the U.S. is so so mired. The notion of a wine keg brings to mind the “tanker truck of plonk” from Sideways pulling up in front of one’s house and dispensing a river of cheap swill.

  160. May 3, 2008

    Jim in Atlanta

    Charlie Berg

Velly, velly interesting; the concept is really cool, man i’m excited as i picture doing some wine kegging at family parties and stuff. i think for really super high quality wines that i want to sit down and savor–obviously a keg wouldn’t be the choice, but aside from that, for toting a keg of vino to a game or party–Rad! QOTD: figuring there are thousands of little trattorias and osterias in Italy, each with their own little keg of wine…probably at least 500,000.

  165. May 3, 2008

    RobRx

Wow! Great idea! The glass bottle with cork is what, AD1650 technology? It is great to see someone applying modern tech to wine. Stainless steel and nitrogen is a no brainer! I would love to buy a keg say 1/2 that size, maybe 6 bottles? with 89-91 point wines in it and use it as my house wine. Biggest problem for a regular wine drinker is what to do with the 1/2 bottle left over every night(assuming you don’t want to get smashed every single night!) I use argon gas, but am never quite happy with the results. Great concept! Scale down the container and upgrade the wine and I say you will sell thousands of kegs.

  166. May 4, 2008

    bgood

QOTD: Just a guess…since the population is 60 some odd million…I would say that somewhere around 20 million kegs are sold annually in Italy. But that’s honestly just a guess.

    Capt M

I think it’s very sustainable. I dream of the day that this system is sold in Panama. I’d be a customer for sure. Thanks for showing us this innovation. QOTD: No idea, but must be a lot.

I agree with some of the notes below that it might be cool to do a smaller one, ala boxed wine, although I wonder how that would affect cost structure

I would defintely try that out if I saw it at a bar or restaurant, great episode (although I’m not sure why you filmed in a parking lot??)

    QOTD: no freaking clue.

  170. May 5, 2008

    Harry

Good show once again. Maybe you should try using a little mike for the outdoor shoots though – the background noise was a little much. I was very impressed by the environmental angle on these at the end. Many places don’t recycle green or brown glass, and saving 15 bottles and all the enviro impacts associated with them could make a significant difference for a restaurant which might go through one or two of these a week.

  171. May 5, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

I would so buy a $15-20 level wine in a keg. I drink wine every night so this would last about 3 months for me. Why aren’t restaurants eating this up?

    Bigsigar
