Vernaccia Wines From Italy, Another White Wine To Pay Attention To. – Episode #457

Vernaccia is another classic white wine that is overlooked by so many as they focus on the 1 or 2 white wines they drink from Italy. I hate to pick on Pinot Grigio but I want people to expand their palates.

great show Gary! love the Vernaccia, specially the heavier ones. Nice deep flavors.
To bad that there wil be no book signing in Europe, I’m from Holland.

QOTD: I would ask you to come with me and my friends to Italy where we cut the grapes for the wine. Every year we go to this beautiful place in Tuscany and spend a week in the fields, there is nothing like it.

    SMELL THAT

qotd: You see yourself still doing the winelibrary tv on a regular basis in lets say 3 to 5 years and will it stay for free? Ive seen lots of people change because of getting “famous”, also on a personal level..

regarding the beginning of the show..expanding the palette.. bought a Tandem syrah 2005 from Morocco..a casa madero merlot 2004 from Mexico and a NO man’s land red 2006 from Bulgaria today with a local wine importer here in Belgium. Santé!

I am coming to see you on the 27th in Portland. Are you set up with Powell’s City of Books? The best book store in, dare I say it, the world! If you come down on Monday we could taste some Oregon Pinot Noir and I could ask you that question. – How are you creating balance in your life between family and your work/passions? Pinot Noir form Oregon is an excellent wine to pursue philosopical dialog.

QOTD Does a bottle of wine taste differently in France, for example, than when you drink the same wine back home?

Yer stoppin in SF, why not hop over to our exotic island city of Alameda? Alameda, home of Willie Stargell, JR Rider (though we don’t want to claim him), JImmie Rollins, Dontrell Willis, Phyllis Diller and Johnny Weissmüller (the original Tarzan). Books Inc on Park St has authors in there ALL the time, they’re very open to visiting writers. On top of that, within walking distance are some very fine restaurants (pappo, cera una volta) a few dandy wine shops, and a new wine bar opening soon (maybe they’ll be open when you pop thru – they are literally, around the corner from Books Inc). And if you’ve had enough wine, head to Forbidden Island (still here on our lil’ island)for FABULOUS tropical hawaiian fuzzy drinks ala Trader Vics in the 60’s.Really, just a 20 minute ride from SF, totally worthwhile!

If you could pick ONE Jets number one draft pick to get a do-over, which would it be? Factor in both how big of a bust the Jets pick was and the great players they could have taken instead.

    Hey Gary

Having visited San Gimignano recently and not tried the wines I was really impressed when I had a couple of bottles on return to HK.

Anyway QOTD: 1. Probably: “whould you like a drink?”
    2. Seeing who you are: “Is the American wine drink scene as tragic as the glimpses I see in your show?” “People not drining until they’re 21, the whole reliance on RP ratings and the evil nature with which alcohol is held”

    Cheers
    Andrew

Yo, I’ll be at the Portland, Oregon book signing. If you want, I’d love to have you as my guest and I’ll crack open a few bottles of Quilceda Creek to show you Pacific NW hospitality! My question is a personal favorite of mine with all my buddies (perfect for drunken bar talk):

What girl do you regret most not hooking up with?

Hey GV, fun show today. I’m coming to Chicago to see you, but I think you should roll through Michigan as well. No real preference on which city, although you should hit up the west coast, and check out the big lake.

QOTD: First I’d ask you what you were drinking so I could buy you another, and then I’d ask if you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Keep it real.

Speaking of Italian whites, I recently drank the 2004 Anselmi Capitel Croce from the Veneto (100% gargenega, single vineyard) which was gorgeous. Lots of tangerine and walnuts on the nose(and a little garbage aroma GV style), great acidity but pretty full bodied, long nutty finish. I got it on sale for 15 bones but usually retails for around 20. Still a great value and shows whats up with the gargenega!

This is a long shot, but come to Phoenix!! We are the 5th largest city in the US for goodness sakes ;)

QOTD: I’d ask if you were picking up the tab?? just kidding. I’d probably ask you to tell me more about adjusting to the US and your initial thoughts and feelings about this place when you first came here. I’d also ask you to make Mott a damn t-shirt already.

    “Let off some steam Bennett!”

QOTD: This seems a bit cliche, but…if you had to pick one wine to drink for the rest of your life…and yes that means from one producer, one style, and one region, what would it be?

When you come to Florida I’m like the Jackson 5…I’ll be there, yes I’ll be there, just call my name and I’ll be there.
