Vernaccia Wines From Italy, Another White Wine To Pay Attention To. – Episode #457

May 2, 2008

Twitter This Share on Facebook Email This

Vernaccia is another classic white wine that is overlooked by so many as they focus on the 1 or 2 white wines they drink from Italy. I hate to pick on Pinot Grigio but I want people to expand their palates.

Tried quite a few of these Vernaccia bad boys when I was on my hold last year. Idyllic place and gorgeous wines. Very difficult to find them back here in Ireland.

GREAT show today GV! I left a comment a couple of weeks ago expressing my love for Vernaccia di San Gimignano – don’t know if you saw it, but I’m going to think it was me who influenced you to do the Ver-nah-chee-uh show today…

QOTD – What wine have you had that the grapes were grown the farthest north of the equator?

Gary, I’ve been a bit of a lurker for the last several months but I still love the show and I’m a big fan! Great work. Here’s the question I’ve been meaning to ask since the first show…

QOTD – WHY DOESN’T WINE EVER JUST SMELL LIKE GRAPES OR WHY IS THE WORD “GRAPES” NEVER USED AS A DESCRIPTION?

Surely there must have been 1 or 2 simple wines over the last 457 shows that you sniffy sniffed that must have just smelled like “grapes”. Why can’t anyone just admit it? Why is it taboo to just say, “hey, this wine just smells like sour grapes and alcohol” or “Wow, over ripe Concords on the nose” …We would know what you mean. It would seem eveyone trys to find any flavor or smell to describe wine but always overlooking the obvious.
Time to add a bowl of grapes to Extensive Palate Training 101! Come on, I dare you to use “smells like Grapes” in a description!

There have been a bunch of white wine WLTV shows recently. As a result, I bought some new whites to expand my palate. I bought more than what I’m listing but here are a few that I look forward to tasting soon:

    2006 Taburno, Falanghina
2006 Josef Schmid, Kremser Weingarten, Gruner Veltliner
    2006 Domaine Renaud, Pouilly-Fuisse

QOTD: Do you want to see my wine list/my cellar inventory?

QOTD – I would probably be happy or sad depending on how the Yankees did that night. But, if i was going to ask you a wine question, It would probably be about which wines you most recently enjoyed. Then you could mention how you actually have a book coming out with 101 wine recommendations. At this point, I would either be impressed, or think you are showing off…

Italian wines are great. I’m going to be attending a seminar given by a Master Sommelier (Laura de Pasquale) on indigenous wines of Italy so we’ll see what she has to say.
QOTD: If you had your own winery, where would it be located, what would you call it, what grapes would you grow, and what wines would you make?

    Happy Birthday Mrs. V (Ma)!

First, Gary, thanks for challenging me to try new wines. I’ve been exploring Italian, Southwestern French, Spanish, and South American wines in the pst few months, thanks to you.

I’d be sure to ask you if you ever had moments of serious doubt about what you were doing. If so, what helps you overcome those doubts? Do you ever feel like you’re beating your head against the wall?

I just e-mailed you, by the way, about an African-american winemaker you might try to connect with while you’re in the Bay Area on your book tour, maybe schedule him as a guest on your show. The S.F. Chronicle just did a nice write-up on him:

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/05/01/WIJS10AHMJ.DTL

If you’re able to make it over to Davis, CA or Sacramento, CA before heading to Chicago after SF, I will TOTALLY, WITHOUT HESITATION come to the book tour. I don’t know if I can make it the 2-hours out to San Francisco, but I sure plan on trying.

QOTD: Either “What’s next?” or “Do you think the wine industry has a noticeable dislike for those within their ranks who become intoxicated (wine drinking instead of wine tasting) ?”

    Have a good weekend!

  58. May 2, 2008

I’m only 17, Gary, you know how hard it is to persue an interest in wine when you’re not legally allowed to drink it! It’s so hard to get into wine tasting!

I’d have to ask you… where does one start???

At least the legal age in Ireland is only 18, I think if I had to wait till 21 I’d go crazy!
Not that anyone really cares anyway, everyone here just gets locked every weekend from 14!
    haha
I’m not into that, though. I just love wine for what it is. Such a beautiful, complex drink!
Thanks for another great show, anyway.
    Happy birthday to your mom!

Wow, the laid back Friday is fired up but that’s OK. I’d probably tell you thanks for sharing your wine experience. Maybe I’d ask you if I could just go along the next time you go to France to check out the wine? I’d like to do the barrel tasting stuff.

If what would your salary request be? Major dilemma here. Either way I am starting to lose my PASSION for wines because it is just a round the clock duty…how do I get my wino mojo back I’M ONLY 26!!!

Keep those tips on the Whites coming! Sorry to hear Chardonnay isn’t your thing–I liked the one showcased at WineLibrary during the Wine/food tasting in March!

My answer to the QOD: If we were hanging out, I’d have two things to ask–question 1 is “As busy as things have been the past 10 years for you, do you have any regrets?”…question 2 is “in your opinion, who was the best of all time, Hogan or Flair?”

QOTD: Definately have to be… What’s the endgame for you Gary? At what point do you say, ‘You know what.. I think we did it.’ Well? Gimme the vision Gary!

So, for the book tour. You gotta come to Chicago Gary! We need you. I represented at one of the biggest wine events in the city – Toast the Town Chicago, 500 wines 20 local restaurants.. but I was dissapointed Gary. I was workin the wristband, and with style too – no one at the event inquired or knew about it. Ironically, I met a lady getting of the train who caught up with me and took a video interview about why I was wearing the wristband. Ill email it to you when I get a copy! (Youll see the style in the vid!) So yea.. we need some thunder in Chicago; we got some work to do. If you come ill help you bring it!

It would be terrific if you came to Indianapolis on your book tour – - but if not, I’ll try to come up to Chicago for your stop there. If you add Cincinnati, OH to the tour, that’s even closer!

QOTD: Who’s going to win the Lord Stanley’s cup? Who is going to win the NBA finals? How do you balance work/life? You give everything (or so it seems) to this job, and WLTV, but that doesn’t leave a lot of time for your wife/family. We love what you do for use, but we want to make sure you’re happy.

  162. May 2, 2008

QOTD: What precipitated the changing of the show. The fist episodes were quite devoid of character. Did you suppress your energy way back when or are these newer shows done in an over the top character that are not true reflections of how you normally carry yourself.

Interesting show, I had never heard of those wines before.

Nosy QOTD: “If” you and Lizzie are being pressured to start a family, why don’t you plan a houseboat vacation for next summer. Guaranteed to do the trick! And you’d have two great Canadian locales to choose from: British Columbia’s Shuswap lakes (with good proximity to the Okanagan wine paradise) or Ontario’s Rideau Lake (with the best reputation for producing houseboat-related preggers).

  165. May 2, 2008

QOTD: “What’s your personal goal?” I’m curious where you really are going with all this. I’m reading “Emperor of Wine” the book about RP and I wonder where you are going to go?

Gary- Why arent you coming to Boise in August for the book tour and the Idaho State Wine Festival to be a judge like last year. I’ll make sure that you get out and fish while you are here.

  166. May 2, 2008

    The Nose in a Day

My question to you GV: If you’d start making wine instead of tasting it and selling it, in which part of the worl would you make it? and what type of wine would you grow?

  171. May 3, 2008

    “Let off some steam Bennett!”

QOTD: This seems a bit cliche, but…if you had to pick one wine to drink for the rest of your life…and yes that means from one producer, one style, and one region, what would it be?

When you come to Florida I’m like the Jackson 5…I’ll be there, yes I’ll be there, just call my name and I’ll be there.

QOTD: I’d ask if you were picking up the tab?? just kidding. I’d probably ask you to tell me more about adjusting to the US and your initial thoughts and feelings about this place when you first came here. I’d also ask you to make Mott a damn t-shirt already.

Speaking of Italian whites, I recently drank the 2004 Anselmi Capitel Croce from the Veneto (100% gargenega, single vineyard) which was gorgeous. Lots of tangerine and walnuts on the nose(and a little garbage aroma GV style), great acidity but pretty full bodied, long nutty finish. I got it on sale for 15 bones but usually retails for around 20. Still a great value and shows whats up with the gargenega!

  176. May 3, 2008

    C-Lo

Hey GV, fun show today. I’m coming to Chicago to see you, but I think you should roll through Michigan as well. No real preference on which city, although you should hit up the west coast, and check out the big lake.

QOTD: First I’d ask you what you were drinking so I could buy you another, and then I’d ask if you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Keep it real.

  177. May 3, 2008

    garth bernstein

Yo, I’ll be at the Portland, Oregon book signing. If you want, I’d love to have you as my guest and I’ll crack open a few bottles of Quilceda Creek to show you Pacific NW hospitality! My question is a personal favorite of mine with all my buddies (perfect for drunken bar talk):

What girl do you regret most not hooking up with?

  178. May 3, 2008

I’ll be seeing you in San Francisco.

    Andrew D

    Hey Gary

Having visited San Gimignano recently and not tried the wines I was really impressed when I had a couple of bottles on return to HK.

Anyway QOTD: 1. Probably: “whould you like a drink?”
    2. Seeing who you are: “Is the American wine drink scene as tragic as the glimpses I see in your show?” “People not drining until they’re 21, the whole reliance on RP ratings and the evil nature with which alcohol is held”

    Cheers
    Andrew

  183. May 3, 2008

Yer stoppin in SF, why not hop over to our exotic island city of Alameda? Alameda, home of Willie Stargell, JR Rider (though we don’t want to claim him), JImmie Rollins, Dontrell Willis, Phyllis Diller and Johnny Weissmüller (the original Tarzan). Books Inc on Park St has authors in there ALL the time, they’re very open to visiting writers. On top of that, within walking distance are some very fine restaurants (pappo, cera una volta) a few dandy wine shops, and a new wine bar opening soon (maybe they’ll be open when you pop thru – they are literally, around the corner from Books Inc). And if you’ve had enough wine, head to Forbidden Island (still here on our lil’ island)for FABULOUS tropical hawaiian fuzzy drinks ala Trader Vics in the 60’s.Really, just a 20 minute ride from SF, totally worthwhile!

I am coming to see you on the 27th in Portland. Are you set up with Powell’s City of Books? The best book store in, dare I say it, the world! If you come down on Monday we could taste some Oregon Pinot Noir and I could ask you that question. – How are you creating balance in your life between family and your work/passions? Pinot Noir form Oregon is an excellent wine to pursue philosopical dialog.

qotd: You see yourself still doing the winelibrary tv on a regular basis in lets say 3 to 5 years and will it stay for free? Ive seen lots of people change because of getting “famous”, also on a personal level..

regarding the beginning of the show..expanding the palette.. bought a Tandem syrah 2005 from Morocco..a casa madero merlot 2004 from Mexico and a NO man’s land red 2006 from Bulgaria today with a local wine importer here in Belgium. Santé!

Hi Gary, 2 important things (happy b day to your loved ones too!!) mine was on 4/29 thanks for the shout out and the Costa Rica plug.

    1. Book tour: I am well connected with the owners of a LARGE bookstore chain here (Libreria Internacional) and wouldn’t it be cool to come down and do a book signing as well as the other stuff we talked about.

    2. QOTD: Which celebrity (sports or otherwise) would you like to share a precious bottle of wine with? (family not allowed)

  205. May 3, 2008

They are my most treasured possessions, I have kept every one. You’re a good son. Write your Mom, more precious than gold.

Most people would take into account the diminishing returns and scale some things back, but you do not roll that way at all. So WHY?? Hey GV,

Long time, first time… How about a book tour stop in Denver??? (this is starting to sound like Jim Rome and the clones…). If you do, the book store to stop at is the Tattered Cover book store – a great long-time independent book seller. There are there locations around town – pick the downtown or uptown location. Would love to chat with you and compare sports stories and fantasy teams – and maybe some wine picks…

QOTD: See, I grew up in Chicago, where there were the Cubs and the White Sox. I was a Cubs fan. Most of my friends were White Sox fans. Then I moved to New York. Oh I was still a Cubs fan, but… c’mon… so I became a Mets fan. I just couldn’t switch to the American League. Most of my friends were Yankees fans. But…I was also a Giants fan. I FINALLY BACKED A WINNER, HA HA! Oh, yeah, the question. See it’s 12:30 and we’ve been drinking a lot of wine, so I digressed there a little. My question is, don’t you feel in the slightest you’ve committed to the wrong team? I mean, it’s probably there, the doubt, the regret, maybe deeply repressed. Actually, it might be the secret to your success. The need to self-actualize in lieu of vicarious victory through your chosen pro sports team has driven you to succeed on your own. Brilliant!! Just kidding! Maybe…

Please come to Columbus, OH or Celevland or anywhere that is less than 5 hours like Chi town.

QOTD – I would ask you how your life has changed since you decided to put yourself out there to the world. It is something that I would never do because as a Chef I want food to go out the same everynight and have people write reviews and talk about how great everything was without being in the spotlight.

I don’t think I’ve seen Veraccia before, I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.

QOTD: I’m curious, how do you drink wine at home? Open a bottle and have it over a few days? Compare a few side by side? Do you have things you things you go back to again and again?

Penney said she would ask you to be less noisy. I guess she expects you would be loud at a bar late at night.

GV, great ‘out-of-left-field’ coverage on Vernacchia. There’s a good selection of them at our local Total Wine and More store in Tampa. Price points make it worthwhile to fill in the spaces at the bottom of your shopping cart.
Swedish lefse comes to mind if packed with some sort of mild seafood, like crab meat, fish, etc. I would draw the line at lutefisk. What wine would go wtih that singularly pungent food anomaly? ewwww!
Tampa would welcome your presence, Gary. We have the stock bookstore chains here (Borders, B & N). However, the largest book emporium in the country might be found in St. Petersburg at Haslams. Anyway, the warm (read hot) weather of Jose Gaspar-land beckons you fly down here and visit us. Besides, Bern’s Steak House is smack-dab in Old Hyde Park. I work there as a waiter. Served a nice little 1970 Haut Liberal last night. The guest loved it.
Remember, too, SuperBowl is in Tampa next go round.
QOTD: If we were parked at the bar, I might ask you if you have ever seriously entertained the notion of making wine on a big scale? Would you get schooled at say, UC at Davis and jump through all those hoops, or would you be satisfied just evaluating wines, like a more contemporary Robert Parker, but connecting more ably via Wine Library TV?

GV, So happy to see you do a show on Vernaccia. I really enjoy their crisp, clean flavor on In a perfect example of wine tasting having everything to do with your current situation: My wife & I went to Italy on our honeymoon. One of the places we visited was San Gimignano. It was like 95 degrees and we have a bottle in the downtown square. It was amazing. Had several bottles since & while they were mostly very good, none could ever compare to that bottle on our honeymoon.

San Gimignano is a very cool little town in Tuscany. It is a walled city much like Siena, but smaller. No cars or tourists are allowed in the town after about 6 PM (except for those staying in one of the small hotels). Awesome! I highly recommend to anyone visiting Italy to spend at least one night in San Gimignano. And, yes, the Vernaccia is good, too!

Gary, I would ask you “how does your wife deal with your busy schedule?” I’m active duty Air Force and I see on a daily basis how wives have a hard time dealing with their husbands busy schedule. You’re a very busy business man, how does your wife deal with it?

QOTD: I’ve been having bad luck with a local liquor store. What should I look for in a liquor store? What kind of questions should I ask? Obviously if I lived in NJ I’d just head over to WineLibrary, but I don’t have that luxury.

    G4VIN

    Hi Gary,

I’m done lurking – here is my first post.

Could you explain to me the difference between the words “variety” and “varietal”? I THOUGHT (and the dictionary seems to agree with me) that a grape “variety” was the type of grape, e.g. Cabernet Sauvignon or Vernaccia, and that “varietal” was the adjective referring to a variety. In other words, a varietal wine would be a wine made from a single variety. You guys seem to use varietal where I would use variety.
