EP 457 Vernaccia Wines From Italy, Another White Wine To Pay Attention To.

Vernaccia is another classic white wine that is overlooked by so many as they focus on the 1 or 2 white wines they drink from Italy. I hate to pick on Pinot Grigio but I want people to expand their palates.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Fontaleoni Vernaccia Di San GimignanoVernaccia di San Gimignano
2006 Sovestro Vernaccia Di San GimignanoVernaccia di San Gimignano

QOTD- Why do yo keep flying over Denver?

  • TWalk

Have you ever tried fried chicken fingers and cottage cheese together….a match made in heaven

  • I would like to see you anywhere close to Tidewater VA Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News, Williamsburg. It is a long schlep to the NYC area for me 6-7 hours at best. What I would ask is what wine you like with different foods. Like this one, never thought of what wine goes with Latkes but hey, why not?

GV I can’t wait to try one of these whites. If we were chillin at a bar I would have to ask you what kind of cigar you want and we would have to smoke right there. I will see you at one of the SF book signings although an hour south in Santa Cruz there are a couple of nice friendly bookstores I will have to see if I can get them to recruit you to speak/sign..

Please come to Columbus, OH or Celevland or anywhere that is less than 5 hours like Chi town.

QOTD – I would ask you how your life has changed since you decided to put yourself out there to the world. It is something that I would never do because as a Chef I want food to go out the same everynight and have people write reviews and talk about how great everything was without being in the spotlight.

I don’t think I’ve seen Veraccia before, I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.

QOTD: I’m curious, how do you drink wine at home? Open a bottle and have it over a few days? Compare a few side by side? Do you have things you things you go back to again and again?

Penney said she would ask you to be less noisy. I guess she expects you would be loud at a bar late at night.

GV, great ‘out-of-left-field’ coverage on Vernacchia. There’s a good selection of them at our local Total Wine and More store in Tampa. Price points make it worthwhile to fill in the spaces at the bottom of your shopping cart.
Swedish lefse comes to mind if packed with some sort of mild seafood, like crab meat, fish, etc. I would draw the line at lutefisk. What wine would go wtih that singularly pungent food anomaly? ewwww!
Tampa would welcome your presence, Gary. We have the stock bookstore chains here (Borders, B & N). However, the largest book emporium in the country might be found in St. Petersburg at Haslams. Anyway, the warm (read hot) weather of Jose Gaspar-land beckons you fly down here and visit us. Besides, Bern’s Steak House is smack-dab in Old Hyde Park. I work there as a waiter. Served a nice little 1970 Haut Liberal last night. The guest loved it.
Remember, too, SuperBowl is in Tampa next go round.
QOTD: If we were parked at the bar, I might ask you if you have ever seriously entertained the notion of making wine on a big scale? Would you get schooled at say, UC at Davis and jump through all those hoops, or would you be satisfied just evaluating wines, like a more contemporary Robert Parker, but connecting more ably via Wine Library TV?

GV, So happy to see you do a show on Vernaccia. I really enjoy their crisp, clean flavor on In a perfect example of wine tasting having everything to do with your current situation: My wife & I went to Italy on our honeymoon. One of the places we visited was San Gimignano. It was like 95 degrees and we have a bottle in the downtown square. It was amazing. Had several bottles since & while they were mostly very good, none could ever compare to that bottle on our honeymoon.

QOTD: What are 10 great everyday wines (White & Red) for under $12 bones based on your palate?

San Gimignano is a very cool little town in Tuscany. It is a walled city much like Siena, but smaller. No cars or tourists are allowed in the town after about 6 PM (except for those staying in one of the small hotels). Awesome! I highly recommend to anyone visiting Italy to spend at least one night in San Gimignano. And, yes, the Vernaccia is good, too!

QOTD: “So Gary, what is the meaning of life?”
