QOTD: theres a local pub here in the wonderful town of Morgantown, WV. and they brew there own beer, so it would probably be one of there seasonal speacials (good stuff)

    Awesome show, great guest!

QOTD: American Brown Ale, specifically Keweenaw Brewing Company’s Lift Bridge Brown Ale. Might have to crack one open tonight.

Any porter or stout is good too.

I love it when Gary swears!

    QOTD: Creemore Springs

I think if I had a choice of beer or nothing I’d choose the later! At least if it was instead of wine!

Gary- I’d love to hear what you’d think Of Hungarian “Bull’s Blood”, you should do that one some time.
It’s quite simple but I just can’t imagine putting it down, it’s such a “friendly” wine! (funny, considering the name!) Sort of tastes like fruity jellies! (I mean the sweets… I mean, candy… not what you call jam… damn differences between American English and English English!! Those sugary chewy things..!)

    Another great show!
    Cheers from Ireland

    Alex Hopgood

    Nice Show loved it
QOTD: Normally i would have a pint of London Pride (english ale), but if it was a warm day i would have a pint of Carling (english lager). not a chance in hell of drinking american beer. haha no offence but it tastes of water.

  23. May 5, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

    Good show!

QOTD: If my only choice was beer, I wouldn’t drink anything at all. Can’t stand the stuff — yuck! Give me a cold cider, though, and I’d be happy.

  25. May 5, 2008

    Malphas

QotD: If I had to have a beer, I’d likely go with Sapporo beer, from Japan. If not that, then Guinness.

    Little Jonny H

I like the backbone this guest brought to the table!!! However, I think a little more enthusiasm and excitement was in order for a surprise on the Thundershow ;) I’d go nuts if I was surprised by GV!

QOTD: What a fantastic question… this is a RIDICULOUS question, seriously!!! If I couldn’t drink a glass of wine, I’d drink… damn… uh… a Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald in winter, and a GL Holy Moses in summer.

  31. May 5, 2008

    Rick D

Fun show today, like the guests.

QOTD: My favorite beer style is true English Pale Ales, not the American versions. I love the Fuggles and East Kent Golding hops used in these ales.

  32. May 5, 2008

    Orion S.

That was a pretty good one. Gotta say, I’m pretty jealous.

QotD: I’d have to go with a Stiegl. You know how the beer drinkers in Germany/Austria are…you have to drink the local stuff. I got hooked on Stiegl in Salzburg and have been loyal ever since. I mean, it was founded in 1492! It’s as old as our country.

    Good question, by the way.

  33. May 5, 2008

    GrapeStuff

Great ep! It would definitely be a belgian white or tripel.

    QOTD: Anchor Steam.

  35. May 5, 2008

    John Blue Label

Great show GV and guest. Lot’s of fun. Love the shiraz.
My beer consumption reflects food, mood etc. Love Guiness because of the complexity and character. One of my favorites is Skipjack lager, and I’ve only had that at the Carolina Hurricanes hockey games. Fantastically smooth and delicious.

    gubby

QTOD: First of all, to the guy that said American beer tastes like water, uh, just not the case. Some of the best, most innovative beer in the world is now comming from American craft breweries. If I had to choose one specific beer it would probably be Firestone 11th Anniversary, absolutely incredible complexity. If I had to choose a style, probably double IPA.

  37. May 5, 2008

    Derek F.

    Awsome!!!! You guys rocked it!!!!

    QOTD: I love Molson Golden

  38. May 5, 2008

    Sharon

That’s a funny show! I’ve never found a Shiraz I’ve liked. Yay Rhone blends! THOSE I like!
I like Killian’s Red, which I know is an American impersonation at an Irish brew, but I like it anyway.

  39. May 5, 2008

    BWicked

    Gary, Nice show. Thanks.
QOTD: Definitely a Pale Ale: Sierra Nevada or Dogfish Head (60- or 90-minute).

  40. May 5, 2008

    Dave from VA

Hey GV, great show. I’ve got some folks coming over around 7 tomorrow to taste the secret pack and was expecting the video to be out today. Have plans changed?

    Thanks!

QOTD: Starr Hill Jomo Lager, perhaps a potent Belgian Ale

  41. May 5, 2008

    Jay

    Best guest QOTD ever!

QOTD: This is very tough, because it’s always dependent on the setting. If I had to pick one that I know I would enjoy, it would have to be Wayan, from Baladin. Awesome beer.

If I’m picking one just becuase I want to try it… No question, Westvleteren 12. Never had a Westy and am just so curious.

  42. May 5, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

Not a beer fan so have difficulty beyond Belgian Ale

  43. May 5, 2008

    Kev and Ams

QOTD: This time of the year, I would go with a Redhook SunRye.

  44. May 5, 2008

    LONG TRAIL ALE

    kaybee

    Good show, liked the guest!
    QoTd
Sorry, no beer for me, don’t like the smell or the taste. Now a nice cup of tea would be a second choice. Like keemun or lapsang souchong.

  46. May 5, 2008

    Robert Howells

I would drink a Innis & Gunn from Scotland. This beer is aged in oak barrels

  47. May 5, 2008

    The Original Marc

Coming here to Des Moines? Hell yeah! I had no idea there were that many Vayniacs here.

QOTD: My beer palate changes too often so it would be impossible for me to say. I’ve never had a beer and said, “Wow, that’s the best beer I’ve ever had,” yet I highly enjoy most beer. So let’s be festive and say Dos Equis.

  48. May 5, 2008

    Exdamyankee

Great ep Gary. Awesome to see a member of the VN “Vaynerized” live!

QOTD: Guinness, most of the time. When I can find it, Kostritzer Black Beer (Germany) is also on my list of faves, as are Kirin (Japan) and La Fin Du Monde, an awesome Belgian-style tripel, about 9% alcohol, from Canada. You’ve GOT to try that one!

  49. May 5, 2008

    Sep

How about St. Peter’s cream ale?

  50. May 5, 2008

    andrew

Ach du leiber! Shairaz from austria! LOL

  51. May 5, 2008

    yowens

QOTD: Depends on the day and mood but probably Iron City or a Black and Tan.

  52. May 5, 2008

    Utah

QOTD: My everyday drinker has got to be the 90 Minute Dogfish Head IPA… but that’s just not enough about beer. Close second (and first on many a winter eve, especially) is the Sam Smith Tadcaster Porter .. with the obligatory honourable mention to a pint of the black..

  53. May 5, 2008

    Utah

I just love posting about Beer! Where’s Beer Library TV? No spit bucket on that show, for sure, Gary…

A Jersey favorite has to be the River Horse Lager…

And while I mentioned the 90 minute Dogfish Head, anyone who is a fan of IPA’s needs to find a way to sample their 120 minute, which they make once or twice a year.

  54. May 5, 2008

    brent

QOTD: Long Trail Ale or Shipyard Export Ale

  55. May 5, 2008

    Tom K

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA would definitely be the beer of choice at the moment. Love the show Gary…just discovered it a few weeks ago but great to see guys like you putting wine on a realistic level without all the bullshit. Keep it up my friend. Oh, and I can’t wait to buy the book!

  56. May 5, 2008

    Mike Nally

Very enjoyable show. Loved how your shell shocked guest started to loosen up after a few tastes of the vino.

QOTD: To be perfectly honest… an ice cold Budweiser is probably the ticket most of the time but I’m always up to try something “better” when it is on tap.

  57. May 5, 2008

    Flavio

QOTD: Spring and Summer is definitely beer time. I’d say a nice citrusy wheat beer, maybe a Blanche de Bruxelles (Belgium) or the Kronenbourg Blanc (France), which are great on their own on a sunny day and go very well with fish and shellfish.

  58. May 5, 2008

    Susan

Gary- Still love the energy!!! You are still the funniest!!!!!!! :)

  59. May 5, 2008

    VBellore

    Good show. Good Question.

If it can be found, Berkshire Brewing Company IPA. The search alone for this stuff makes finding it even sweeter.
seek it out, its worth it, anything they (BBC) make is good.

    More Guests please

  60. May 5, 2008

    Withnail

Good one. No real favorite beers anymore. Used to like Haystack Black from Oregon, the Sam Smith line from England (esp. Oatmeal Stout), British Columbia porters and ales.
In today’s ep, I liked where GV – right after he complimented the guest on his shirt – says “It’s bright, polished, elegant, earthy but fruity”.

  61. May 5, 2008

    SteveW

Great show, I will have to look for the Eppalock Ridge Shiraz 2002.
QOTD: I like alot of hops, so I drink mostly IPA’s, at the moment my IPA
    of choice is Bridgeport’s.

  62. May 5, 2008

    Jeff R.

    Gary – Good show.

I noticed your guest mentioned zinfandel. I too jumped on that varietal first and then found myself progressing to shiraz. I wonder if that’s a common occurance you see … is it a normal progression?

QOTD – Three Floyd’s Brewing – I like anything they do. Love the citrus profile in the Alpha King IPA.

Also, are there any Vaniac’s attempting to get a Cleveland book signing together. Let me know through your comment … I’ll get you my email and I’d be glad to assist you. We should do better than Des Moines!

  63. May 5, 2008

    Kristen

    Nice show! I’m definitely jealous!

QOTD: Eek! I don’t like beer. But if I do have to drink it, it’d be New Glarus Spotted Cow or (when in France) Desperadoes.

  64. May 5, 2008

    Ryan W

QOTD – I have two loves in my life first is wine and a close second is beer.

    Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

    QOTD: Keiler’s Dunkel (Germany)

  68. May 5, 2008

    John Farrin

Nice show! The fruit bombs have their place in the rotation. I have two of them on my top 10 under $i0 list. Great Tuesday night, don’t want to spend a fortune but want some wine, wines.

QOTD: The two beers I have a year, whether I need them or not, are a Japanese draft and a German, Warsteiner.

  69. May 5, 2008

    Jon McDermott

QOTD: Goose Island IPA, its my goto daily. I make a lot a lot of beer so I am pretty interested in what folks say.

If you do a book signing in Des Moines I will drive there for sure. (2 hour drive from where I am in Nebraska.) Good show perhaps we could get you to Omaha or Lincoln Nebraska? Hmm… We will see..

QOTD: As a person from Texas it would be irresponsible for me to say anything other than Shiner Bock!

  97. May 5, 2008

    theemptyglass

Why stick to one beer? If we couldn’t have wine, Gary would be out there telling us we should be trying other types of beer. =) At our house we try to switch it up often, depending on the food and our mood. Beer is a frequent choice because we like Mexican food, and the debate is lively between the guys who like Coors Light and me who prefers Lagers, Stouts, Ales, (anything really, but light beer).

  98. May 5, 2008

    Omallley

    QOTD: A local microbrewed IPA.

  99. May 5, 2008

  100. May 5, 2008

    Rani Haykal

    Great Show!!!

Definitely one of your better guest shows in my opinion. Very real and down to earth.

QOTD: It all depends on what I’m in the mood for. For a big boy beer I’d go with Chimay Blue. For a higher alcohol beer (in a smaller package then the chimay blue) I’d go with La Fin du Monde. For an every day light drinker I’d go with Hoegaarden w/ a floated lemon wedge.

    –RH

  101. May 5, 2008

    Nick R

Nice ep! It’s nice having an amateur and “pro” opinion side-by-side.

QOTD – Not a big beer drinker, but I usually stick with a microbrew (whatever sounds interesting) or a bud light/coors light/miller light

  102. May 5, 2008

    Woody

qotd: Bells Brewery Oberon Ale. Its a local brewery located in Kalamazoo MI. They produce several types but this is by far my favorite. It is their summer Ale and is only produced during the summer. Very good.

    Stone IPA, Arrogant Bastard
    un*earthly I2PA
    Rogue I2PA

Great show, Gary! You inspired me to try another Aussie wine. I started to feel like I was gambling money in Australia, since almost half the wines I tried were way to sweet/alcoholic/fake for me, so I’ve been spending lots of time in France. I tried Yard Dog Red 2006, and it was beautiful. Very fruit-forward, with smooth tannins. A little overripe, but dry, with excellent acidity. So excellent in fact, I checked the label…55% Petite Verdot! the rest is Cab with a little merlot. PV baby, PV!

Anyhow, it carried the %15 alcohol surprisingly well, and the nose was satisfyingly complex – smoky, jammy, minty, and spicy. I’ve paid twice the 10 bones it cost for lesser wines in Aus.

Awesome show. I loved the look of surprise on your guests face when he walked out of the elevator, classic ! I think that having a guest on helps you get the points across of how important it is that trying new wines can really expand your palate and lead you into trying wines that you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Qotd: My go to beer is Widmer’s Drop Top Amber out of Portland, Oregon.

  120. May 6, 2008

Any classic IPA that brings the hops in full force, without going over the top and completely blowing my btus out of my tongue.

I live in Des Moines, and was shocked to hear you talking about coming. I would totally be there.

The bookstore they’re talking about having you at is an awesome local spot, and the city itself is becoming really cool in recent years, believe it or not.

So… Add me to the list.

  122. May 6, 2008

    Achilleas in Cyprus

That was such a fun show and it really brings home what WLTV is all about.

QOTD: apart from Whit Beer from Holland, there are soooo many English Ales that are just so tasty and good. There is a time for stouts too.

QOTD: available everywhere, but I would say Newcastle Brown Ale would be my choice.

Gary, I loved this episode. You had a Conan with Andy Richter thing going (my favorite Late Night with Conan era, of course). I would love to see more guest appearances. Even this same guy (he was an awesome compliment to your crazy personality). I also liked hearing multiple explanations of aromatic and flavor profiles.

  126. May 6, 2008

Also the local ,and very interesting, Surly Furious. Surly is a Minneapolis brewery and they make very unique beers. To me, The Furious tastes like Grapefruit cider.

    Mason

What a nice guy you are, GV! You get a guest on the show, and then have his favorite wine, and a few more of a grape that he likes… What a guy! Great show, enjoyed the guest.

QOTD: I could go for Sam Adams Honey Porter, Samuel Smith’s Imperial Stout, or a Guinness. Any of those would make me a happy man.

I’m a bit of a fickle beer drinker. I suppose the truth is I don’t appreciate in the way I do wine. But if my doctor’s orders were reversed and I could only drink beer, I guess my choice would reflect the same fondness for sweetness, and I’d usually choose a Rickard’s Red. “Candy beer”, my friends sneer. “Training beer”, my ex-boss used to laugh. For a change-up, I enjoy an occasional Stella Artois.

You rock with guests, fun show. Like the surprise factor, hilarious. You’re like the tooth faerie, only for wine.

Feature request for your “Wines tasted in this episode” list on the web page – any chance you could put the price (at the time of the show) and your rating next to each wine? That would be really convenient since my short term memory is basically shot.

Always like a Sam Smith’s Nut Brown when I’m treating myself.

I do like the inside of his shirt sleeve..fun show.

QOTD: Anything that looks interesting by description, area or recommendation from store. I like to try different things–chocolate and fruit notes are good. Limited and rare works for me also. It’s so infrequent that I buy beer, that I don’t remember the names. When buying for parties, we usually stick to the basics–Bud, Coors, etc.

  146. May 6, 2008

    Jameus

Today’s show was great! It’s always good when you have a co-host especially when it’s just a nice average joe sort of guy. He’s not in the wine biz ect. just loves wine like so many of us do :) It was great to be able to relate more directly with what he was coming up with. Not that I don’t relate to you, however sometimes in order to get what you’re getting I’d need to taste the wine and see what you said and TRY to pull it out. Interesting thing about the hazyblur wines, I checked out the site and he learned from watching his Italian father make wine the old school way for years before deciding to make his own. Perhaps those roots were part of the reason the wine came across as something to accompany a meal as most Italian wines are. Just a thought…

QOTD: Well my wife won’t let me buy enough wine to drink daily so I do buy and drink beer since it’s a little cheaper hehe. I don’t always get the same thing (where’s the fun in that). I like the beck’s dark, sleemans, alexander keiths, and lots of great craft beers – to many to mention lol.

  147. May 6, 2008

QOTD: Newcastle, Samuel Adams, several producer’s seasonal brews, porter in the winter, summer brews in the spring/summer……………………….. but I prefer wine.

  150. May 6, 2008

    alfredhayes

QOTD: Innin and Gunn. Oak Barrel aged beer. Bittersweet and smooth. A scotch/wine lover’s beer for sure. Second choice is Stella. On taste alone it is great, but their advertising campaign is world-class. “I would rather die of thirst than drink from teh cup of mediocrity”. You just can’t beat that.

    Awesome episode.

QOTD: Just like with wine, depends on what I am eating. Just had a Smuttynose IPA with Sushi, which was great. For a BBQ, St. Peter’s Old Style Porter. My all time favorite beer is the Brooklyn Chocolate Stout.

  153. May 6, 2008

    Toke-Dawg

QOTD: A good craft brewery pale ale.

  154. May 6, 2008

    JimB

Just started watching and love it. But someone needs to proof read the episode pages. At the top it says “Lets see their take on the Austrian reds!” I thought McLaren was in Australia ;) . And the wines listed under Wines tasted in this episode:
    2006 Nugan Estate Shiraz
    2002 Eppalock Ridge Shiraz
    2006 Nugan Estate Shiraz
    2002 Eppalock Ridge Shiraz

    oops!

But I love the show. And I love Shiraz. Gotta try some Eppalock.

P.S. Interesting how you developed your palette. I have a friend who teaches wine certification courses. She has never tasted strawberries, cherries, or most fruit in her life. She developed her palate the opposite way, by identifying wine flavors and having others tell her “that’s strawberry” etc. She has an amazing palette and nose.

QOTD: My own home brewed Red Ale.

QOTD: I’m a big fan of Aventinus Weizenbock, a nice deep brew with a personality to match some hearty, flavorful meals. Definitely not something I’d reach for on an everyday basis, but when the mood hits it always satisfies!

Beer out of a bottle has to be Orval. The Belgian heavyweight champ knocks everything else flat.

But as I’m in England, I can get Coniston Bluebird on draught in a lakeside pub. And you can’t beat that with anything.

  198. May 6, 2008

    Bookman

QOTD: Since it’s the Summer (almost), I’m once again hooked on Bell’s Brewery ‘Oberon’ summer ale. Outside of that, if it’s an occasion where I’m out, I’ll go Belgian almost every time; St. Bernardus ‘Prior 8′, Gulden Draak, Maredsous 8, et al. Used to love the Triples, but alcohol content is too high for the Summer. If we’re talking an everyday selection; Guinness, the greatest beer ever invented, and the only beer in the world specifically designed to be shot out it’s container using a CO/2 system, hence the unique “settling” it does in the pint glass.

Great show, once again. I always check back to see if you’ve covered one of my favorites here in DC; Pure Love’s ‘Desert Eagle’ Shiraz, from Barossa.

  199. May 6, 2008

Definitely a Guinness – can’t beat it. And yes, the cliche is true – it does taste better in Ireland!

QOTD: I’m an IPA guy, and the best is brewed during fresh hop season out here in Oregon. My absolute favorite is Bridgeport Hop Harvest Ale, an Imperial style IPA. However, it’s only made once a year in a very limited amount so the rest of the year I primarily drink Bridegeport IPA.

  235. May 7, 2008

    Daniel O

I love shows with guests. Awesome!

QOTD: I don’t drink beer. If I’m going to have and alcoholic beverage, the alcohol content has to be in the double digits. :-)

    Jayhitek

Why is Gary doing the fat guy trick of keeping his button down shirt untucked?

QOTD: I just had a Hoegaarden the other night and it’s amazing. But for rest of your life.. Something good and light – Stella Artois?
Something a little more bold – Sam Adams Light?
    Tough question. Negro Modelo?

  237. May 7, 2008

    Andy & Edie

Without a doubt, one of the best episodes in a long time. What a great guest, you two could do the show together! I would have to say my beer of choice would be Guiness or Blue Moon Pale Ale with some orange in it.(Andy)

Edie also likes Blue Moon or Cider beer.

I had so much fun watching this! What a nice man.
I’m not much of a beer drinker. For me it’s all about wine. However, if you’re going to press me, I have tried some microbrews that I like, but a staple may be a St. Paulie Girl or Red Truck; and, if we’re going with Mexican food, a Pacifico w/lime.

    i like sam adams, too
recently had a long neck bottle of the belgian chimay red
herbs & spices in the beer. delicious.
also had a belgian style beer from quebec which was expensive (yen1,100) but worth it.
recently i’m all over the belgians. could be a result of living in japan with their clean, crisp, flavor-challenged beers
    thanks for the shows

    Gary,
What a nice show offering the co-pilot’s seat to a Vayniac. Nice. I felt I was invited to a private wine tasting and enjoyed the comraderie. Thanks for the shout out to Bern’s in Tampa. Looking forward to your re-visit. Sold a ‘99 Sartori Corte Bra Amarone for $60.00, and a 1970 Haut Liberal.
Do you remember Fizzies? You might be too young. But the grape fizzies and root beer were my favs.

I’m starting to think I like the new-world Shiraz style (as opposed to old-world Syrah, which I really like), although I’ve not had too many and there were a couple of crocks in there.

QOTD – Belgian ale and wheat beers, including German HefeWeizen. Yum!

  262. May 9, 2008

    LuvsChandon

My list of fav beers is longer than my list of fav wines, I’ll spare ya’ll the long list. I’ve been drinking them craft beers (aka micro-brews) since before it was legal for me to do so. IPAs are my top favorite!

  263. May 9, 2008

    chezjosh

If I have to drink only beer for the rest of my life, it would probably have to be hefe-weizen. But can I please through some oatmeal stout in there for diversity?

Not only is Heathcote swamped by the Barossa and Mclaren Vale, there are quite a few other great Shiraz regions in Australia, that are quite unique, make some very classy wines with structure and character, not the overblown ballsy reds that are seen more in the US. Regions such as Mt Barker Western Australia, Mt Barker South Australia, Gippsland, The Grampians, these are just a few.

Oh, and Cascade Premium Ale from Tasmania. You now have another Aussie as a fan.

  271. May 15, 2008

    Luis Felipe

Great episode, btw. QOTD – Leffe Brune, it tastes and smells like cloves to myself and my girlfriend. She prefers the Blonde.

I’m 9 shows behind, so I’ll comment on every show now.

qotd…I prefer having the beer I make, mostly english style ales, but when I’m out I’m all over the map. Definitely into the ‘craft’ beers here in the us and traditional european styles. When I’m working outside on the car, I have to admit, I hit the Miller High Life. Make fun of me, go ahead.

Just discovered your show recently, and I like it…now trying to catch up. I’m a Belgian living in Spain, so I guess I have the best of both worlds : really good value for money wines (I challenge everyone with a 4.5€=6.5$ Campo de Borja for instance) and the BEST beers of the world. Twice a year I drive up/down between Belgium and Spain and you can bet my boot is full of alcohol! So : QOTD = my absolute favourite beer = Westvleteren 12, but since it was chosen best in a US competition, it’s hard to get it (the monks don’t brew more than absolutely necessary for breaking even), but it “civil” equivalent St Bernardus 12 is brilliant as well. Rochefort beers (also trappist beers) are equally wonderful. My favourite summer beer : a Hoegaarden white beer or a reddish Palm…

I expected to see a lot of OVER the top fruit bombs today, but it was nice that didnt happen. QOTD: Ive never been into beer. Ive had cheap and expensive, Bud amd mircorbews. Even Guiness. Beer doesnt do it for me at all.
